5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginner's Tai Chi Video
Here's a video I go back to over and over again as reference for basic moves in Tai Chi. It's a down-to-earth, easy to follow video that tells you want you need and want to know.

The pace of this video is perfect. While some tapes spend so much time on "warm-ups". Warm-ups are here, but they don't get in the way of your jumping into the Tai Chi moves that you really want to learn. Some tapes are so full of various production trappings that it becomes confusing when watching the split-screens and their almost psychedelic methods of transition. This tape is a straight-shooter that doesn't bore you, confuse you, or have you doing things early in the process that only turn you off from learning Tai Chi.

If there's a negative, it's that it seems the primary demonstrator, Yvette Wong, who does such an outstanding job on this video, seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. When you start watching, you see that this tape is referred to as Vol. 1, but I've never seen Vol. 2. Maybe I need to do more searching. Also, this would be great in a DVD format, and I wish someone would reissue it in that format.

This is a real gem, it makes you want to learn, it never annoys you, it's just the best. To Yvette and the second demonstrator Ray Van Raamsdonk, I say BRAVO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tai Chi tape
Very easy to follow and learn from. This is an excellent video, the best Tai Chi tape I've found. Unfortunately, it is the short form which only lasts around three minutes, but you can do it over and over. It really feels good and is taught well.
    I love this video.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL RELAXING MOVEMENTS
ENJOYMENT: I have really enjoyed this video and will never part with it. It shows very slowly, step-by-step how to do a beautifully choreographed Tai Chi set lasting approximately 3 minutes total time. (Once you get to the end, you can start all over again so you can make it last at long or as short as you want.)

ACCOMPLISHMENT: Tai Chi is an art you CAN learn and feel PROUD of yourself performing. When you watch the beginning of the video and see them doing the complete set it will really motivate you to learn Tai Chi due to its grace, elegance and beauty; personally, my jaw dropped to the floor! I was amazed and very impressed.

FREEDOM: To be really good at Tai Chi requires daily practice in the teacher's opinion. That is probably true but shouldn't deter you from trying Tai Chi. You can "be your own boss" so to speak and do whatever movements you like and enjoy the most--making your own routine shorter or longer, if you prefer. This was my first Tai Chi video so I followed the teacher. What makes this so easy to learn is that she turns with her back to you so you do EXACTLY what she does without any confusion!

BENEFITS: Tai Chi is a very beneficial workout for the body and the mind. It reduces stress while also toning muscles and improving flexibility. Tai Chi is a very effective way to control arthritic pain (something that runs in my family), promote cardiovascular fitness and lose weight. Tai Chi is for EVERYONE of ALL ages. It provides all the benefits of a rigorous workout but it is gentle and relaxing. It is known that a mild exercise performed daily is more beneficial to the body than a strenous exercise done 2-3 times a week.

BOTTOM LINE: If you want an exercise workout that doesn't leave you sweating and exhausted but instead relaxed and calm, this is what you've been searching for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Egoless Fundamentals
I learned more about the basics of Tai Chi from this video than the dozen or so other videos I've seen, most by more famous presenters. Here, the fundamentals are covered slowly and systematically. Whatever the Tai Chi style, this is a good place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars This video is an excellent introduction to Tai Chi.
I have watched many other Tai Chi videos, and this is my favorite by far. Each exercise is explained very well and is shown from different angles. This makes the video easy to follow and understand. If you do not have any previous knowledge of Tai Chi, then this is a perfect introduction. ... Read more

While the title might seem like something more likely to be found on oneof Letterman's Top 10 Lists ("Future Careers of Movie Has-Beens" or"Reasons to Wear Pajamas in Public"), David Carradine's Tai Chi Workout forBeginners is nothing if not completely serious. Carradine narrates and helpsa certified tai chi instructor lead three students through the Chen style, considered by some to be the original style of tai chi. Against an ever-changing(and distracting) nature video backdrop, the 60-minute tape breaks the exercisesinto sections: "Opening the Gates" loosens and warms major joints; "SpecificHealth" movements relieve headaches or soothe joints, for instance; "Stillness"harnesses the mind's powers; "Linkage" shows how to combine the moves; and in"Coil & Flow" you see how it's supposed to look once you know what you're doing. It'll take repeated viewings to master this ancient and complicated martial art- -the number one reason to own this video. --Valerie J. 4-0 out of 5 stars appealing and soothing instruction
This was the first Tai Chi video that I tried out. Basically I bought it because I liked David Carradine as an actor and thought I would enjoy his instruction style. It is a beautifully produced video with soft music and nature scenes to get you into the mood. David's teaching style is very appealing and soothing. As a beginner, I appreciated the fact that there are only nine moves to learn and that they are repeated on both sides of your body for even development.

While I really enjoyed the teaching and music, I did find it somewhat difficult to learn some of the moves because you are watching for the most part from the front and have to reverse the moves to be going the same direction as the instructor and students. Another thing is that David is teaching the Chen style, which I found difficult to find on another video for further study (that was before I found amazon.com.) I tried a few more Tai Chi videos and found the one that was the easiest to follow was the Tai Chi for Health with Terrence Dunn. He has a video on both the long and short form of Yang style Tai Chi. His instruction is excellent and slow, you view him from two angles simultaneously, and you get 108 positions in the long form which should keep you busy and you will not have to spend more money on a Tai Chi video for quite some time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow at first....
I was encouraged by the beginner pace when I first began viewing this tape, but I found that as the video progressed, the movements were more difficult to follow. I am very familiar and comfortable with Chi Kung and was very interested in learning a Tai Chi form. I consider myself well coordinated and a fast learner. I've heard that you can't really learn Tai Chi from a video, but with my hectic schedule, I'm still hopeful I'll find the right video.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best!
I checked this video out of the library once when I was having severe muscle stiffness. I'm a mesomorph, and tend to get very musclebound when I train. When I saw it for sale, I had to have it!

The workout is not at all strenuous, but is excellent for joints, flexibility, and muscle tone. I like to use it in combination with Rodney Yee's "Yoga Conditoning for Athletes," on days when I don't train. I also recommend this tape to sedentary people, because the gentle, no-impact moves are excellent for circulation and stress relief --- plus they feel great!

If you're interested in learning classical Tai Chi as a martial art, the best thing to do is find a good (live) instructor. However, if you're looking for gentle exercises to improve flexibility, circulation, and muscle condition, this is one of the best workouts you can get.

3-0 out of 5 stars Possibly a motivating tape for anyone with an illness
I am about half way through this tape. The video starts off with a testimonial from a woman who feels that tai chi helped her beat cancer. David claims various moves should cure or prevent various ailments and keep specific organs healthy. If you have an illness, this might be a very motivating tape because you certainly will not feel alone and you may develop a re-affirmed feeling of hope and motivation.

My main objective was to relieve back pain. I liked the first two sections of the first tape better for this purpose. The rest of the first tape is proving difficult to follow. Kinda of like learning dance steps without being able to see the instructors feet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Everybody.
I've had this video sitting around for about a year now and just recently decided to check it out. I'm very happy with it, and look forward to my routine every day. Yes, as others have pointed out, there are 9 movements and it does take a week or two to get each of the movements down and in good form, but once you do, this little workout produces great results. The only thing I wish is that they had spent more time at the beginning of the video demonstrating each of the movements because it is hard to coordinate them, but that's a minor complaint. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have to say I wanted to hate this video
I have to say I wanted to hate this video. I mean David Carradine, b-movie actor, chinese wannabe, 1970's kung-fu guy ...who would have thought this video would be anything other than a joke. But....I was forced to eat my words, and feelings. The video, most likley do to Arnold Taiam and his direct connection to Real Chi Gong and Kung Fu, actually make a good , easy to follow, video that is more than benificial to the viewer than 90 percent of the other videos ive seen on the topic.
There are a few glitches I do have to say, as when David isn't really preforming the moves as his teacher is, and also how he doesn't always tell you he's changing side (from right to left or vice versa) but then you could argue that was done on purpose to keep the viewer "in the class"...hmm... well none the less if you want to get your foot in the door with either Tai Chi or Chi gong, and you want a tape you can use every day, to give you that in class feeling... you can't go wrong with this one!

Good going Goldhil...keep it up !

Maybe if they make a Ninja workout they can get Michel Dudikoff to host it -- i mean its not like he's been in much lately.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kung Fuy
This guy really irks me; always trying to pass himself off as a Martial Artist just because he starred in the TV series "Kung Fu". He's a joke in the Martial arts community. His forms are atrocious, and his advice should never be listened to.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Carradine's Tai Chi for the Body and Mind
This 2 tape set is an excellent introdution to Tai Chi Chuan by David Carradine. Well photographed and expertly choreographed; Mr. Carradine leads the viewer on a brief and simple (And very beneficial) calming workout that leaves one relaxed and at the same time, invigorated. An excellent companion video set to Mr. Carradine's Tai Chi for Beginners and Chi Kung Workout. The viewer will get that close knit one on one feeling with Mr. Carradine, and feel that this workout was created just for them. Excellent job David. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tai Chi video
This is a great video for anyone new to tai chi. Multiple angles are used to take into account that you are doing the movements from home. The instruction is clear and there's a great warmup segment that describes the correct way to do the exercises. I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars T'ai Chi: The Empowering Workout
This video is very well done. The scenery is beautiful and music calming. Extremely professional, Jerry Allen Johnson provides a most relaxed atmosphere and is very easy to follow. You feel rexaxed and energized when you finish this workout.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE EMPOWERING WORKOUT- TAI CHI

    1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible quality--pirated
The video I received from Amazon was a very poor copy. Worse, under the narration was the voice of a person calling a rugby game. Obviously a pirated version. Not worth a penny.

    5-0 out of 5 stars ~Tai Chi for Arthritis~
Since 1993 I taught Tai Chi (yang short form), for many years. My mom has really bad arthritis and I wanted to find a Tai Chi Fitness for her. Some how this video ended up in my hands. I learned this great style and began to teach mom. I was convinced that the Doctors and Teachers were most definitely right- when they say that Tai Chi Sun Style is a gentle, slow moving fitness and up-right positions (qi gong, tai chi) which works on the joints in a certain way, to help heal ones self (with daily practice). Don't go throwing your meds away but talk with your doctor and tell him you want to do Tai Chi. Bring some print out on it, so he can decide if its for you.
I have been teach Tai Chi for Arthritis in Westchester County for years and did my own small surveys on how it helped my student or not. Majority of Arthritic students (and non- arthritic), have felt terrific in terms of joint mobility and strenghting the joints so it helps the joint and its movement. It gave confidence when there was none and a smile on ones face! I highly recommend this video to anyone 18- Senior its easy to learn and fun to do. Dr Paul Lam did a great job on teaching and explaining the 12 Forms. There is group follow along frontal, behind and multiple viewing so you can follow. Follow from behind and watch the front view and visualize! The 12 forms are also done a few time from start to finish by Dr Lam near the end. Qi Gong warm-up too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for Mom- better then whats out there!
My mom want to start exercise program. She has bad Arthritis thru out her body and needed to do something to help herself. The first video I bought was the worst and this teacher who sold it to me was a unprofessional wanna be! He didnt even know Chair Tai Chi. I bought the Tai Chi for Arthirtis video and at this time I was teaching Cheng Man-ch'ing (Tai Chi) for many years. I thought this was so good, I started to do research on the subject. My past background at Burke Rehabilition, NY gave me the experience, knowledge and the guts to specialize in Tai Chi for Arthirtis (For ages 18- Seniors, Arthirtis and injuries, illness).
I thank Mom, Dr Paul Lam and his programs for my success in teaching and specializing Tai Chi for Arthirtis Programs thats also accessible and suitable for almost anyone, Young Adults 18 to Seniors! Great for Arthritis, Seniors, and Limited Abilities (Injuries) too! In my opinion, Tai Chi for Arthirtis is not just for arthritis. The quality of the Video the Teacher and the Audio are excellent, buy it.
"WORTH THE MONEY IN GOLD...YOUR HEALTH"

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful video has changed my life
Dr. Lam demonstrates six basic and six advanced movements of Tai Chi to a class of mostly white-haired adults. He has modified some of the movements so that arthitis sufferers aren't doing themselves harm. It is a cheerful, positive video with some scenes set in classroom and others against a beautiful Australian harbor. The first set has great detail as one movement at a time is demonstrated. It encourages a slow pace that allows for memorizing the routine. Dr. Lam himself seems kind and charming and I spent a lot of time trying to imitate his hands and feet positions as well as the whole movement. The second set is demonstrated more briefly. Then the whole routine is shown with Dr. Lam facing and then with back to exercisers. I rerun this 12 movement section frequently to compare my posture to his and to improve. The only thing I would do to improve the tape would be to show the routine several times in a row from the back so that the learner could repeat the forms several times without rewinding. The sections with people in polo shirts are easier to imitate than the ones where Dr. Lam is wearing flowing silk garments which obscure his movements. He follows this with helpful qigong breathing exercises and stretching. Long bus trips are difficult for me. But recently, I tried doing the warm-ups, and several sets of Tai Chi at each bus stop of several minutes and though I had to bump my way down the bus stairs on my backside at the end of several hours, I was in much less pain and was much less stiff than normal. Thank you so much Dr. Lam. I just wish I could buy one of those shirts so I could proclaim to the world that Tai Chi with Dr. Lam will loosen and strengthen your joints and calm you as well. PS as a rather gung ho Christian I had trouble with bowing to god shelf at local classes and this video did not have the religious element. I highly recommend it and am asking our library system to purchase it. I work full time (I do a set at my lunch break) and this video has been something wise that I have done to improve my life.

    Description

New Forest(tm) T’ai Chi for Beginners is the most useful of all T’ai Chi videotapes. There are no confusing postures or complicated movement sequences to learn. The benefits of T’ai Chi practice are realized through simple, slow motion stepping patterns and arm movements that resemble paintingthe number shapes 1, 2, 3, …, 9, 10. The T’ai Chi sequence is easy to memorize, yet challenges the mind to remain focused, clear, and free of distraction. It is truly a mind-body exercise.

This video is perfect for the older adult who is interested in the health benefits of T’ai Chi but is frustrated by the complexity of more traditional styles. New Forest(tm) T’ai Chi is fun to learn and easy to do. Children find this video entertaining as they recognize the number shapes and get to feel ‘silly’ moving in slow motion. No special equipment is needed. The average living room provides adequate space.

Follow Grandmaster John Bright-Fey as he leads you through a 40-minute T’ai Chi workout designed by a licensed physical therapist. The workout includes a 10-minute warm-up, 28 minutes of T’ai Chi, and a 3-minute warm-down. Safety guidelines for exercise are included throughout the learning experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Stress Relief!!
The New Forest Tai Chi for Beginners Video is a great stress relief tool, and who couldn't use that? As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) I see many people who are searching for tools to help them manage the stress in their lives and to help them achieve some sense of internal balance. This video provides excellent training in using movement to achieve those goals. Bright-Fey's approach is easy to learn and easily fits into even the busiest schedule. No prior experience is necessary - this video is appropriate for all ages and all levels of physical ability. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Forest T'ai Chi for Everyone
The New Forest T'ai Chi video for beginners is an excellent way to experience the benefits of a well-designed program of exercise which relieves stress, loosens joints and improves balance.

After taking two (one twelve week and one eight week) sessions with John and Kim Bright-Fey, I realized the video would encourage me to continue an exercise regimen at home. I have been so pleased with the video because it accurately reflects their teachings and techniques and motivates me to do the exercises and routines in between the personal sessions. The routines are easy to learn and fun to do!! By the way, I am a 72-year-old female with a precious husband who has Parkinson's. Talk about stress!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Workout Without Pain and Pretzel Twisting
Like many people, I have tried all kinds of yoga only to discover that pain and soreness outweigh any "relaxing" benefits. Then I discovered New Forest Tai Chi. This video provides what I've been looking for for years--a simple movement routine that relaxes and boosts energy without tying me up in knots. Far from the manic energy I'd feel sometimes from aerobics (ugh) or power yoga, playing New Forest Tai Chi makes me feel truly relaxed and revitalized for the rest of the day. I was surprised at first because the videotape seems so simple. I'm usually wary of anything for beginners, but the introductory level of the video makes it completely accessible and yet I can tell the benefits are quite advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye
Having played a variety of styles of tai chi with a variety of teachers, I have to say that John Bright-Fey's presentation of tai chi makes this powerful art accessible to anyone and everyone. Although the movements are simple, their performance coupled with a playful attitude can produce amazing results. Although it is a beginners tape, "old pros" could benefit from this tape in that it speaks to the essence of this ancient art that is read to be rediscovere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tai Chi that spoke to me.
This is a great beginnner video. It was simple, the instructor was personable, I felt like I was in the room with him. I was able to do each step, each movement. 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Tai Chi
As someone coming new to Tai Chi I wanted a medium which would allow me to easily repeat a particular section until I become comfortable with it. This DVD meets that requirement and more. I have found Paul Lam's explanations to be very thorough and free from jargon, and I am sure that after a few weeks I will start to derive some real benefits.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best way to get into tai-chi (besides live instruction)
This program enables anyone interested in learning tai-chi off to an enjoyable start. This video/dvd version by Dr. Paul Lam shows the 24 forms in different perspectives - including the full form facing you as well as back to you, which is very considerate for the absolute beginner which these videos are geared towards (I previously bought a video by another teacher which supposedly is geared to beginners as well but I didn't appreciate the version because the instructor faces the viewer leaving you to move in the opposite direction then does the complete form in silouhette lighting this video by Dr. Lam is much more considerate in that manner).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instructional Video of the Standardised 24 forms
It is an excellent 2 hours instructional video of the standardised 24 forms. All the instructors are of high level, and explanations are very clear. The tape has 3 parts. The first part teaches 6 Qigong exercises. The second part teaches the 7 most important/difficult movements of the form. The third is a detailed instruction of all the 24 movements. Each movement is split in several parts and it is shown from different angles. At the end of the video, there is a complete demonstration of the 24 forms from the front and from the back views. There are instructions how to use the video for learning efficiently the 24 forms. However, it isn't enough for the absolute beginner. The video assumes that the viewer has a previous training either from a teacher or from al least one of other basic videos of Dr. Lam (eg. Tai chi for older adults, Tai Chi for Health).

5-0 out of 5 stars Go to the Head of the Class!
This is truly a marvelous video especially to be used as a study guide between classes. I used it in conjunction with a weekly class on the 24 Form with an instructor. I quickly went from novice to the head of the class. Now, when the instructor tells the students, "I know the class is crowded, but, if you cannot see me, watch Pat". I feel very proud. I could not have done it without Dr. Lam. Get this tape. It is an inexpensive way to Tai Chi stardom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lam-- professional, standard Yang short form
Dr. Lam and some of his assistants in this DVD have won medals in China in Tai Chi competition. This reflects their standardness and conformity to the Yang style. If you want the standard stuff, and are not willing to settle for watered-down, careless, or altered versions, this is it. This will show you the Yang Short Form as true to its original developers. I have not had any instruction in karate or any martial art, but was able to follow the individual form presentations fine without having to go to the final demonstration.
I believe that much thought and care was put into the development of the forms to the end of maximizing the benefits to the flow of Chi in different parts of the body, with the attendant health benefits. Departing from or altering the forms could cut across the gains to be had from this. So I say be as standard as possible to reap the full benefits of Tai Chi.
I looked at several other Tai Chi DVDs. Some of them were at a lower level than the Yang Short Form. One of them was at a higher level-- showing 48 forms. The Yang Short Form was developed with the idea of having a set of forms that pretty much the whole population of China could do on a daily basis. The intention was to cut down on health care costs by promoting the preventative health care benefits of Tai Chi. So they needed high participation, and they couldn't make it difficult to learn. They also couldn't have it take much time. It takes only 4 - 6 minutes. Leading practitioners of Tai Chi were given the job of sifting through the larger body of Tai Chi forms and practices to come up with a set of exercise forms that would maximize health benefits in a short period of time. I respect the product of this work, and wanted to stay as close to it as possible. If you think this may be too much for you to start with, ask yourself "Do I think I can understand and apply as well as 80% of the Chinese population?" You probably can. If you think so, don't start out with a lower level "beginning" DVD. As far as a higher level, you can go on to that once you have this down. ... Read more

Claire Hooton's introduction to t'ai chi is easy to follow,well-thought through, and professionally produced--the perfect assetfor any beginning student interested in using t'ai chi to improve hisor her physical and spiritual well-being. While silver-haired Hooton isobviously a terrific example for older women viewers, the lessons sheoffers are accessible and valuable for everyone. She begins with ashort interview-style lecture on the benefits of t'ai chi, an exercisethat builds health, increases longevity, and "wakes up our sense ofbeing a part of nature." Soon, viewers are taught the basic principlesof posture, breathing, weight distribution, and the dynamic relaxationthat gives the form its power. Finally, viewers are led through thefirst third of the Yang-style short form (the final 40 moves are on thenext tape, The Method: T'ai Chi, Intermediate Level). Eachmovement in the form is a worthwhile exercise in its own right, andHooton describes them simply and methodically. Sometimes her metaphorsfor the positions ("the bird's head throws the teabag out the window")seem a bit silly, but they're no less evocative than some of thetraditional Chinese names ("Single Whip," "Repulse Monkeys"), andactually work well to make the moves easy to understand and remember. And, even more importantly, each movement is shown from the frontfirst, and then repeated by two demonstrators from behind, making itvery easy to follow along correctly. The detailed descriptions are aboon to beginners, and high-production values are a definite plus(especially the colored panels projected on the floor to clarify footmovements). But most helpful are Hooton's tips on visualizing the bodyto effortlessly tap the power of t'ai chi's gentle, dance-likemovements. This video is definitely recommended for anyone interestedin learning t'ai chi basics. --Grant Balfour ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this one
To all the other negative comments I would like to add that the presenter often makes mistakes in the description of what she is doing. At one point asking the student to move the left foot when she actually moves the right. Other times she pauses and corrects herself during the presentation.

The instructions are not complete and are fed piecemeal. This would not be a problem if it was structured but she often leaves critical information till the second time you try a posture (the first time you are supposed to try it is when you are looking directly at her, the second is when they use the 'reverse view' which really should have come first).

Her demonstration of a posture is always shown before the reverse view so you can't practice all the postures in one go when you are learning. There is no chance for you to reset your posture between showings of the two versions, thereby ensuring that you are always behind and feeling like an idiot.

There is an option to look at the whole program in one go but that is only useful to those that already know what they are doing as it has no commentary.

No attempt has been made to provide the student with a structured learning program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Dyslexics!
Finally, T'ai Chi presented in a form I can follow! Claire Hooton's Reverse teaching method helps me move with the group and she moves through slow enough that I can figure out the different steps and perform them. I've tried other T'ai Chi videos, which were beautiful to watch, but I couldn't perform the steps. I've tried taking a class, but the instructor grew impatient with me because I kept moving to the opposite direction. This video actually helped me to learn T'ai Chi. I still have difficulty doing the steps very fast, but at least I can do them with this video.
Not all T'ai Chi videos work for everyone and no one should judge what methods someone uses to be healthy. For those of us, who move a little slower or need a different approach, I highly recommend this video. Do what works for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid!
I wanted to try a new kind of fitness video besides the typical over-choreographed step workout. I bought this tape. The first time I used it I found myself wondering when the "exercise program" mentioned on the back cover was going to start. Whoever called Hooton an "old bag" was right on the money. She didn't have a whole lot of energy and was a very bland leader. I had never tried t'ai chi before, but thanks to this video I never will again. Buy something to use for an exercise program, just don't buy this!

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent for complete beginners
This video was my first instruction in T'ai Chi Ch'uan. While I have some extensive history with martial arts, it has been several years since I practiced any forms or kata, let alone stretched and centered myself. I purchased this video with the hopes that it would teach me the movements, styles, breathing patterns, and fundamentals I needed to practice and become proficient. It did just that, to a degree, but I have some criticisms.
Ms Hooton seems knowledgeable on the subject, including some history and discussion of the major principals. The pace is slow and deliberate (as it should be...this is a beginner video, not a 'jazzercise' fat-burner) and the instruction is repeated and shown from two angles, using the so called 'EZ Learn Reverse View'...a fancy name for 'showing the movements from the students view' (...it still perplexes me.)
Unfortunately, her teaching seems focused on a very specific crowd. She continually makes analogies and comments as if she is in front of a classroom full of people, not a camera. While these comments may be good when students can ask for clarification, they are distracting to someone watching a video screen to interpret stance and movement. It is obvious she did not script out what she wanted to verbally convey before the cameras rolled.
Do not get me wrong, I think this is a very good video for those with no martial arts training who want to learn the Yang Short Form (the first 20 movements) of T'ai Chi Ch'uan. But if you have any previous experience, you may want to find something a bit more advanced. The instruction is excellent, but you may get bored with her explanations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Arggghhh! TOO SLOW - Drove me crazy!...
I'm sorry to say this video drove me absolutely nuts! Maybe it's just me, but I think an exercise video should have you MOVE at some point. This lady just talks and talks and talks! This is probably great for someone who is starting at step one, but for anyone with ANY experience at all, this is BORING! I'm going to sell this copy and look for one that is a little more advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Tai Chi Sword
Master Shou-Yu Liang does an outstanding job of showing the Tai Chi Sword form in 4 sections with 6 to 8 parts in each. He shows the front and back view as well as repeating each part 4 times. This method is good if you are following video as you learn. This way you will be able to repeat each part 4 times with the video. I especially like the background music (soft classical paino), stage setting and lighting with Tai Chi uniforms. You can see full body moves which helps when trying to understand the stance and arm and leg positioning. I would recommend this video to anyone interested in learn the Tai Chi Sword form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like in a class
This video is really good. It covers the standard 32 postures serie. I fully agree with the previous other reviewers. In addition to more highlight the video, I'd like to say that each movement is repeated 4 times but not just "copy-paste" the same sequence, it is really performed 4 different times so that you can notice small differences in different part of the movement that help you to better understand the movement itself. What I also really appreciate is the fact the movements are shown in both front and back view. This is great since the back view puts you in the same condition as in a class (back to the teacher) without haveing the mirror problem. The only point is that I'd have appreciated some application of the movement.
In conclusion the video really puts you as in a class. The only limitation is that it can not correct you........

5-0 out of 5 stars I totally agree with Donald L Graham's review
I spontaneously enrolled in a Tai Chi Sword class excitedly waiting for the first instruction and when it came it was in Chinese ... "oops". It was too beautiful to pass up so I stayed. I frantically looked for instruction, written or otherwise, and when I gambled on this video I was blessed. I was able to keep up with the class because the video was very similar to my instructors' 32 steps except for one additional move. Although I prefer my instructors' style and grace because she looked like she was floating on air, this video helped me complete the course with confidence and most of all - joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Logical Presentation
Found the quality of the video and sound good. Lighting was good and camera angles excellent so that precise motions could be easily followed. I liked the presentation of the lessons. There is plenty of repitition of each segment of each form. One doesn't need to keep rewinding the tape to catch something missed. Doesn't get bogged down in detailed explanations, but lets the action of demonstation speak to us. There are front and back views and each part is demonstrated at least four times before connecting with the other segments. I really like it and find it extremely helpful as a great supplement to actual instruction. In a pinch I could use it for primary instruction if necessary. ... Read more

Very well instructed. Short but relaxing. I like his instructions, very well done and you do not have to think so much about what you are doing as he goes slow and is very clear in his instuctions. I found it very easy to follow. I would recommend this one for beginners like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video to see the Traditional Simplified short forms.
I learned a great deal from the companion book for this video, but it is necessary to see the video to truly capture the forms. Included are both the Simplified 24 postures form and the 48 postures form. Although these are shorter and easier to learn than traditional 'real' long form Taijiquan, they are derived from Yang style Taiji and have intact fighting applications. The applications for the 24 postures form are included in this video. Its much better to learn this form than some more modern 'Tai Chi for Health' form which has lost the essence of the postures.

Master Liang and his students are very smooth and repeat the sequences from several angles, so that it is simple to learn the form. The health benefits are profound, and I usually do this form for about 10 minutes a day.

From this video, an interested tai chi player can move on to a more traditional long form with a very solid foundation. Thanks to Dr. Yang for producing this video! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, doesnt deliver what it promises
As a learning tool for beginners this video fails. The first 20 minutes are spent on the same kind of stretching and warm-ups you did in gym class or can read about for free anywhere. He then does 10 minutes of chigung warms ups, which are simply more slow stretching (and better presented in any book). Next theres a 10 minute demonstration moves from the short form, all seen from the front and not structured for the beginner. When he finally gets around to the form there's one runthru (front only, no replay) of about 6 minutes, and that it - 40 minutes of warmup for one demo. The production values are crummy, looks like the whole thing was shot on a home camcorder with poor focus. Having taught martial arts for years I can tell you that few beginners will get the moves from presentations like this. As a learning video for people of any age this video is poor, but putting "for seniors" in the title to hook novices or their caregivers is cheating. Save your money !

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful but...
I bought this video for my 82 year old mother-in-law who is quite active despite severe arthritis, but beginning to slow down rather alarmingly.

The short form is broken down into exercises that are easy to follow and quite relaxing, however if you are buying the tape for someone who is hard of hearing, I don't recommend it unless you plan to exercise with them and they are comfortable in admitting that they cannot make out many of the verbal instructions, all of which are quite important to doing the exercises correctly. Though she has top of the line hearing aids, the nature of the sound track makes it difficult to distinquish many of the instructions over the background music and white noise.

Other than that, I highly recommend the tape. Though the exercises appear to be easy to a 45 year old such as myself, they seem to be at just the right level to challenge an elder without wearing him or her out. Though I feel refreshed after completing the exercises, she is tired, but still up for a walk. Another feature that I truly appreciated was the total lack of condescension expressed by the instructor toward those who may have trouble doing some of the exercises as he suggests easier alternatives.

3-0 out of 5 stars Instruction fine, disappointed in the camera work
I received this video today. I purchased it based on the glowing reviews I'd read here. Let me say I thought the instruction was fine: very clear, slow, easy to follow (4 stars for that). Unfortunately the video itself I would rate no higher than a good amateur production. The quality and clarity of the video and sound were fine. However it looks like it was shot in a carpet warehouse - two oriental carpets on the floor (which he has to straighten out at times because they curl up) and possibly a large one behind as a backdrop! But even that's OK. The most annoying thing is that on a number of occasions when he is describing a new move/exercise they zoom into his face and you can't see what he is doing with his hands/feet. At other times when he is discussing body alignment they stay focused on his legs and you miss the arm movements.
Overall: instruction is fine, setting could be better, but some of the camera work is really annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This would be a great present for any senior. The exercises are easy to do, they are presented clearly with lots of helpful health tips and there are a great variety of exercises. This will keep seniors loose, flexible and strong. (I am not a senior but tried the exercises. I think they are great for anyone). It's a shame the way many seniors degenerate so quickly. If they practiced exercises like these, they could stay active throughout their lives. And as I said, it wouldn't hurt for us youngins to stay flexible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for seniors!
This is a wonderful video for seniors. It has warm up, flexibility exercises, chi-gung energy exercises, T'ai-chi exercises, T'ai-chi form. There is so much here. And unlike some videos, the teacher speaks clearly, shows everything very clearly and even explains the importance of proper breathing and the principles behind T'ai-chi - how it improves your health. It would be wonderful if every senior used this video. A lot of the exercises are shown from a seated position so you don't even need to stand up. Get this video for a senior you know. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Nude Tai Chi - Don't Expect To Learn Anything
If you buy this video to learn something on Tai Chi... Forget it! You have some very pretty nude models doing "Tai Chi moves over and over and over and over again... Moves not connected, and not very good. If you want to look at the ladies the video is not bad... If you want to learn Tai Chi, find another video!

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY PEACEFUL AND UPLIFTING
I can see that all the previous people who rated this video were men. All they talked about were the women's bodies. I am a female nudist, and I bought the video because I like working out in the nude. If you look beyond the women, you can really get an awesome and uplifting experience. Whenever I work out with this video, it leaves me feeling at peace; and all that has bothered me throughout the day just disappears. GUYS! Don't just look at the "naked" women. There is more to experience here than that. You are missing the whole experience!

3-0 out of 5 stars Useless but fun
As an instructional video, this is a total joke. The models clearly have no idea what they're doing, and move with none of the grace and fluidity of real t'ai chi. Basically, they just look good naked, which is what this video is really about. It's only worthwhile as a cheap thrill and a cheap laugh. The funniest part is the model on the right -- she can't get some of the moves quite right because her breasts are too big to get her arms past! The biggest disappointment, aside from its uselessness as a workout video, is that the sexiest model (the one on the left) was missing for most of the last 1/4 of the tape. I only gave it three stars because I thought it was funny, because the women were nice-looking, although wooden, and because I love the fact that there's not a single piece of clothing to be seen on this entire tape.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic tai-chai, with a twist...
"Nude Tai-Chai" is a very basic instructional video, with the twist that the demonstrators (all female) are in the nude. As in "Nude Stretching" and "Nude Yoga," the emphasis is on the nude models. These models are attractive, if somewhat plastic, women who slowly go through the motions of basic tai-chai moves. There is very little voice instruction; Rather, the models demonstrate the moves as a group. END ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome -- Easy to Use & Great for All Ages
I have severe spine and hip problems, and Tai Chi was recommended by my physician. After some research, I decided this sounded like the best introduction -- especially considering my physical limitations. It is perfect in every way, with gentle routines, easy to understand and I'm already feeling the benefits in my flexibility, endurance, balance. It also provides a general all-around good feeling.

It's particularly nice that there are two routines offered on the tape, one for standing and one for sitting. Due to my physical problems with my hip, I can't stand but all the benefits are coming to me with just the sitting down routine. There isn't anything on the tape I can't do sitting down.

My husband is also doing the routines -- he does the standing ones while I do the sitting ones. He has a problem with neck pain and limitation of movement in that area and has seen chiropractors for this for some time. The chiropractic has helped some, but this tape has provided so much more flexibility and help with his pain that he now is only doing the Tai Chi.

My husband was quite sceptical of Tai Chi and reluctant to try it, but he's amazed and now it's a part of our daily routine and nice to share together.

I highly recommend this tape for anyone who is either a beginner or who has any type of physical limitations. We plan to move on to more advanced techniques at some point; but, without this tape as a foundation, we probably would never have realized how beneficial Tai Chi could be for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and good for you
This video is gentle on my joints. I get to exercise without hurting myself. I also have had back pain off and on for years. This is helping my pain. I was told by my doctor to exercise but I don't like to sweat. I recommend this video for anyone who hasn't exercised in a long time. Its easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow
I have seen some tai chi videos that are hard to follow but this one is easy to understand and follow. I get all the benefits of Tai chi without having to study it for years. If you want a tai chi workout but don't have the time to spend hours on learning it in depth, this is the video for you. It has a seated version of the workout at the end of the tape but I can still stand when I exercise.

2-0 out of 5 stars hard to follow, camera focuses on students doing it wrong
I'm surprised more beginners don't injure their knees doing one or two of the moves. Carradine's voice is stiff, the camera focuses too often on the students behind him who look look like they're doing it for the first time and confused, instead of on the person demonstrating the move. I got this years ago when this was the only Tai Chi tape around. Now that there are many good Tai Chi tapes and DVDs you should get one of those.

This video also offers Chi Kung exercises which, when done after the Tia Chi exercises give you a calming to your mind and body. It has increased my strength yet helps keep me calm and relaxed. I do moderate exercise with weights but feel Chi Kung has increased my strength more than weights. If you just do the exercises you will be very thankful for this video! I am 49 years old and never go to the doctor. My body cures it self.

I liked the video but would not recommend it for people who have never practiced Tai Chi before. I would say it is a video for the intermediate Beginner. I like that it shows the individual movements as well as the complete form.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not tai chi, not relaxing, and not a workout
I am stunned by the low quality of this video. It is ill-conceived in every way. There is no warm-up; you are just thrown into difficult stretches and postures. Then you ears are filled with prattle about "tightening you buttocks" and "toning your thighs." Carradine tells us: "The higher you lift your leg, the firmer your butt will get." Folks: this ain't tai chi. Tai chi is an ancient fusion of martial art, meditation, and yoga: it is not about vanity. Furthermore, the instruction is awful: the discussion about breathing, balance, and philosophy is inadequate. Want a "workout"? Buy an aerobics video. Want tai chi? Terry Dunn ("Tai Chi For Health" video) is a very good teacher, especially for beginners. Here's a line from Carradine: "You should feel supple and fluid, like seafood." Yes, he actually says that, when he's not talking about trimming your body. Tai chi is too beautiful, too spiritual, too powerful to be insulted by this inane "workout."

what is with all the "nay sayers" above! I dig this video and would recommend it to anybody... the negative is the shots of the "students" doing the moves when we should be watching the Sifu, and David (who's been doing it for over 12 years) instead... ... Read more
