5-0 out of 5 stars Veggies Rock again!
I'm 19, and like the person listed before me, I first saw the veggies in my 12-th grade Religion class. But I enjoyed the video and now own the entire series. This was a very good episode of the VT. The first half is a "Dr. Seuss" parody/retelling of the Good Samaritan Parable. It comes off very well with some great songs along the way. The Star-Trek parody, the second half of the video, is also very good and, would you believe it, the first time I heard the "I can be your friend song" I nearly cried, twas so beautiful. Great music. Great fun. Make sure you watch your vegetables!

5-0 out of 5 stars These animators can make gourds dance!
This ranks as one of my favorite "Veggie Tales" videos.

It combines stellar graphics (singing and dancing gourds), excellent Christian messages (Good Samaritan story and acceptance), and good, clean fun that both children and adults will enjoy.

The Story of Flibber-o-loo tells the Good Samaritan story with a twist or two along the way. You'll be singing along..."I'm busy, busy...terribly busy."

However, Star Trek fans will especially enjoy The Gourds Must Be Crazy - an amusing send-up of Star Trek (complete with Scotty as played by a carrot) and a pie shaped starship that strangely resembles the Enterprise.

And of course, each episode contains a "Silly Song with Larry" - a non-sensical part of the show that is so dumb it's funny. Fans of Monty Python will recognize some of the humor.

Learning Bible stories has never been so much fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Lesson and Hilarious Fun!
The sweet lesson in befriending the new kid is intertwined with hilarious mock Star Trek moments. This video leaves kids and adults laughing and learning a moral as well! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the Totally Awesome Veggie Tales Videos!
This was the very first Veggie Tales I ever saw, way back in 1995, and I still think it is one of the best Veggie Tales ever made. Funny stories with moral messages, cool computer animation, silly songs you want to keep singing, and hilarious inside jokes for the older viewers. If you have other Veggie Tales videos but not this one, you have got to get this, it is wonderful! If you haven't yet jumped on the Veggie Tales bandwagon, I suggest you do so, and start with this video. Veggie Tales are videos that people of all ages love, from the little two year olds (A half hour video is perfect for that age) to the grown-ups. I have known a lot of people who have watched Veggie Tales (even non-Christians) and everyone loves them! My husband and I are as excited as our kids when a new Veggie Tales comes out. Try them, I know that you will love them.

A new VeggieTale character is introduced in the most song-filled videoyet from this Christian-lite series that promotes "Sunday morning values, and Saturday morning fun." Madame Blueberry is so blue, even her butlers (Bob and Larry, natch) can't fill her every need. But wait--the giant Stuff-Mart is just opening down the lane--promising joy to those who buy everything (a typical sales pitch: "Of course you don't need an air compressor, but don't you want one?"). Madame Blueberry will learn a hard lesson in being thankful. Bad news: "Silly Songs with Larry" has been canceled. Good news: "Love Songs with Mr. Lunt" has a whopper of a tune in its place. Note: the family picnicking near Stuff-Mart has a strong resemblance to cocreator Phil Vischer's family. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for any age!
This is one of the better installments in the Veggie Tales series. Madame Blueberry learns a valuable lesson about greed. She isn't happy and thinks it's because she doesn't have enough stuff. Then, a Stuff-Mart (a great Wal-Mart knock-off) opens up down the road. Through Madame Blueberry's quest for more stuff she realizes that all the stuff in the world won't make her happy. What she wants is a happy and thankful heart. She realizes this a little too late and loses her treehouse but is still thankful for the lesson she learned. In this age of "gotta have it all", this is a great way to show kids that having a lot of "stuff" won't buy happiness. Through excellent writing and some great songs, including the Stuff-Mart rap, the people at Big Idea have created another video that is multi-generational. Even adults will come away thinking about the need for "stuff". This video also includes the song, My Cheeseburger, a temporary replacement to the Silly Songs with Larry. Be sure to listen during the scene in the Stuff-Mart food court for the muzak version. Too funny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Charmer whose message packs a punch!
My 6yo son is a big Veggie Tales fan, but he absolutely LOVES this episode. It's not hard to see why, as a parent, because the animation is adorable and vivid and the songs are instant classics (the chorus to "His Cheeseburger" cracks me up every time.) I'm surprised anyone thought that the concept that "stuff does not make you happy" is too hard for kids to comprehend. These days, virtually all of children's programming is basically made up of half-hour commercials for merchandise and toy lines, so this was extremely refreshing to see. The end is very concrete and leaves no room for confusion in a young child. My son was becoming extremely greedy and Mr. Asky McGrabby every time we went to any store, but it seems like he actually *learned* something with this video, because a gentle, "Are you gonna be like Madame Blueberry was?" makes him smile AND stop the constant toy-pleading.

I don't disagree, though, that this video delivers a message that many adults would do well to internalize as well. =)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome story and values to teach your little ones!
This is just a very cute video. It's neat to see how the people at Big Idea treat the common problem of "too much stuff." Madame Blueberry is blue because she doesn't like all her stuff and wasn't happy until she got all new stuff at Stuff Mart. It wasn't until she saw Junior being happy with a ball instead of the train he wanted that she truly realized that it wasn't stuff she needed but a new and happy heart. When her house falls along with all hew new stuff, she makes new friends and is truly thankful for what she has. It's a great story to teach little ones, especially today when we all seem too glutted with "stuff." This is very well done and quite cute. Thanks a bunch Big Idea!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Veggie Tales Winner
My four kids, ages 0-6, enjoy this movie! My six year old definately understands the moral behind this delightful movie. My 4 year old son loves the music, including the spin on the Silly Songs with Larry (can you imagine Mr. Lunt taking Larry's place?!) My two younger sons continued to be delighted with the music and colors that make all Veggie Tales videos special. The lesson about greed is a good one for all children to learn at an early age.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hit with my whole family - young and old alike!
My son started watching Madame Blueberry at 3 months old - it was one of only two videos he would sit still for and enjoy. (Silly Song Countdown was the other - highly recommended!!!) And as often we have played it - neither he, myself, Daddy, or even Nana gets bored of it. My son may not fully understand the message until he gets older, but the rest of us do and has come up to rememberance on more than one occasion. (Nana recently told me that she was feeling "blue" going Christmas shopping and was singing "I'm so blue..." to herself, then realized that she wasn't being thankful for what she had and quickly changed her tune to "Thankful Heart." )The story line is fun and humorous for kids to enjoy, but with enough content included to keep adults quite entertained themselves. The songs are hilarious and addicting - and you'll gain a new appreciation for the Blue Danube. The Thankfulness Song is a real treat. There's lots of music and movement from the very beginning to keep young babies attention for a while. This really is a fun video and quite entertaining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful version of a beautiful story
I LOVED THIS VIDEO!!! A true account of three young children who were chosen by Our Lady of Fatima to spread the News, this is a tender and sensitive version. The animation is beautiful, and it paints a clear picture for young children who watch it. The complexity of the story is lessened in order to cater to the younger audience, which makes this a very good choice for your kids if you want to teach them about the story of Fatima. Of course, you don't have to be young to enjoy this one--it's guaranteed to make both the young and old smile! =) This is one of those stories that will be well-loved by many for all eternity, and this well-made version is surely a must-see. You'll love it. =)

The creators of the sensational 3-D computer-animated series VeggieTales transport their goofiest character--Larryboy--into the traditional world of 2-D line-drawing animation for a new Christian-lite comedy series. In this first episode, Larryboy (the superhero alter ego of Larry the Cucumber) takes on the dastardly Awful Alvin, who has made sure any angry citizen of Bumblyburg stays angry thanks to his legions of batlike eyebrows. The gentle lesson of letting go of anger is massaged with the typical VeggieTales high jinks. Many of the well-known VeggieTales stars make appearances; Bob the Tomato is editor of the newspaper where Larry is not a Clark Kent-like reporter but rather a janitor. Also included is the silent short "Fly by Night," in which Larryboy takes on a pesky fly. Ages 4 and older. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic
Larry Boy finaaly gets his own series! Working as the janitor at the Daily Bumble *he wasn't qualified for other positions* where he can keep an eye on the town. Several favorites are back: Bob, the editor in chief, Jr, an reporter, and Larry's faithful butler Archibald. A whole produce truckload of new characters arrive, among them: a new girl cuke reporter, a matronly fungi inventor, and the wise master Bok Choy, who teaches the superhero class at Bumblyber Community College.

The villians this round are Awful Alvin and his sidekick, Lampy. *Lampy is one of my favorite new characters* Alvin's evil plan is to relase angry eyebrows on the city, making the people, er, vegtables hold on to thier anger. Can LarryBoy withstand the attack? Can he defeat Alvin and Lampy? *after the main feature, the short "Fly by Might" is shown. Standard Tom & Jerry fare*

In the special DVD features, there are interviews, kareoke, character development, and other fun diversions.

Mike and Phil have another winner with The Angry Eyeballs. I recomend this for ages 6-126. *Even teens like me love the Cucumber of Steel!*

4-0 out of 5 stars I for one am glad to have this in my son's video library.
Sure it's different from other Veggie Tales, but it's technically not Veggie Tales...it's Larry Boy. It's supposed to be different, and as mentioned, geared for older children.

I do agree that the short was disappointing to say the least...all the fly did was land on his nose, and Larry became obsessed in wishing to destroy him...not a good lesson for kids...

...However, the message of not holding onto one's anger or things will get progressively worse is a very good one, especially if your child has a problem with this. On a couple occasions after a rough day in school, I'd let my son watch this and the very next day he had totally turned it around, proudly stating that no angry eyebrows got him.

Kudos to Big Idea!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not at all disappointed
While I understand what some people are saying about the style, as other reviewers have noted there was a reason for the style change. Big Idea is trying to go down a path where the videos can be produced more quickly so that kids (parents) have a greater variety of Christian alternatives to choose from.

My 3-year-old son LOVES this video. He's big into superheros right now, and Larryboy isn't the normal angst-ridden fare with a terrible dark side. And he has good moral lessons to teach, as well as showing that even if you forget or make a mistake, you can still make it right by listening to God.

My 6-year-old daughter likes it, too. And how often does that happen?!

Good family fare, unless you don't want your kids to watch the same program 2-4 times in a row.

4-0 out of 5 stars He is that hero!
Geez, some folks don't like change... Some reviewers are complaining because LarryBoy isn't the same as the VeggieTales videos. Well, it wasn't supposed to be, it's a new show. My kids and I love this. It's silly and funny and wholesome. Now, "Dance with me, Lampy!"

4-0 out of 5 stars It's growing on us.
We are a very "Veggie" family, and at first we were also disappointed in this video. But we have really come to enjoy it and our 2 boys request it more than all of their other veggie videos.

What needs to be understood is that Big Idea is producing these with the specific intention of putting them on regular TV and give Christian families an alternative to Spongbob, Rugrats, etc. This is a new venue for them, and it is something that we really need to encourage!

We also hope to see new videos comparable to their older 3D ones (or the WONDERFUL Jonah movie) very soon. Til then, "what the world needs now is a hero"!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Flop From Notorious Dreamworks Pictures!
Honestly, the way I see it is that "The Haunting" was the only commendable production from Dreamworks Pictures. This feature animation, on the other hand, puts Steven Spielberg to a great deal of shame, I'm afraid; and it all the more proves how Jeffery Katzenberg can hardly survive without the expertise of the Walt Disney Company.

First of all, it is terribly non-accurate in terms of restoring a "tale" of how Moses delivered his people. And secondly, eew...imagine how the people looked! Many praised this movie for its stunning background design; I personally feel horrible-looking CGI-animated people pale in accompaniment to how "stunning" the audience opines the animation to be - either in a positive or negative way. Why, I think even Don Bluth's "Anastasia" could do many times better!

The soundtrack itself isn't all the more that fantastic, despite the several rather meaningful songs like "River Lullaby", "Through Heaven's Eyes" and "When You Believe", due to that familiar sensation from listening to scores of similar tones. I suppose this is the only portion of "The Prince of Egypt" which persuades me to only hang on to it with an unimpressive 3-star rating. Better luck next time, Dreamworks - looking forward to your much anticipated "The Iron Robot"!

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ARTISTIC MILESTONE IN THE HISTORY OF ANIMATION!!
The Biblical story of Moses has become a spiritual cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. To adapt it to an animated motion picture presented an epic challenge to Dreamworks founders Steven Spielberg and Jeffery Katzenberg, which they have triumphed over very successfully. Disney's somewhat disappointing Hercules made movie fans look for a different angle of story-telling as it was becoming clear that they were tiring of the tried and true Disney hit formula. .

After the Oscar-winning Pocahontas, the studios had not been to deliver its best (though I completely agree that The Hunchback Of Notre dame is one of the most underrated animated classics). Fox's Anastasia conquered a large number of hearts with its amazing character-depth and haunting tunes, but a box-office success of a larger proportion was required to dethrone Disney's monopoly. The Prince Of Egypt is easily the best non-Disney feature ever made (followed closely by Anastasia) and in every way, it as unique a classic as Beauty And The Beast or The Lion King. It is emotional, musical, captivating, and inspirational and has a profound moral meaning and beauty.

The story remains mostly true to its Exodus origin. It varies from The Ten Commandments in exploring the relationships between the two brothers who are destined to be enemies. The strength of the movie lies in the strong emotional bonds it depicts between its characters, something which The Ten commandments failed to portray. The animation is lush and vibrant, blending both classic hand-drawn cels and Computer Generated Imagery. The backgrounds and visuals and breath-taking and even the CGI sequences such as "The Parting of The Red Sea" are to be marveled at. Dreamworks artists have adapted a new angular style of character sketching which looks refreshingly beautiful on the silver screen.

Stephen Swartz's music is melodious and meaningful; from the spine-chilling "Deliver Us" to the soul-searching "When You Believe" which won the Oscar for the Best Song in 1998. (though I must say that I love Pfeiffer and Dworsky's version much more than Mariah Carrey and Whitney Houston's pop reprise). An astoundingly deep, sensitive and piercing score almost overrides the film's music; strongly highlighting the sentimental points with its rich orchestral appeal and Ofra Haza's tantalizing choral accompaniments. Nominated for an Academy Award, it deserved the Oscar for the Best Musical Score category (though I would personally have loved to see Goldsmith win his second Oscar for his incredible score of Mulan). Warbeck's score for Shakespeare In Love which eventually won, though appealing, pales before Zimmer's work or Goldsmith's masterpiece. Then again, I have noticed that Oscars go more by popularity than by talent. David Newman's nominated score from Anastasia was most definitely the Best among the Musical scores of 1997, although the Oscar favored The Full Monty, which could not possibly win in any other field where it had been nominated (owing to Titanic) and so walked away with a very undeserving award.

The Prince Of Egypt utilizes a host of acclaimed on-screen actors and actresses; comprising the voice talents of Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Danny Glover, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jeff Goldblum, Sandra Bullock, Patrick Stewart, Martin Short, Helen Mirren and Steve Martin. It is undoubtedly the most ambitious vocal cast ever assembled for an animated movie. All the actors bring the characters to life with striking warmth and depth. Both Kilmer's as well as Fiennes' work are very praiseworthy.

The DVD offers a excellent anamorphic 1.85:1 video transfer which looks very crisp and colorful. The Dolby digital 5.1 sound makes good use of surround, nicely highlighting the score and special effects. Dreamworks has also recently released a DTS version of the DVD in April, 2003 which is an improvised version of the earlier Dolby release. The special features provide an in-depth look at the making of the movie. Also included are two trailers, "When You Believe" multi-language reel, still galleries, interviews with the cast and a "Basics of the Chariot Race" CGI explanation segment.

The Prince Of Egypt is nothing short of a masterpiece in animation history. The movie is geared more towards the mature audiences and those expecting fast pace fun-oriented stuff will not find it towards their taste. Young children may find some scenes a little disturbing, hence Dreamworks rated the movie a PG. So go enjoy Dreamworks' first animated motion picture, which is a classic to be cherished now and for generations

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Animation and Story
The Prince of Egypt is an excellently animated movie from Dreamworks, with
great storytelling and characters and usually very good music. One doesn't
have to be religious to appreciate this movie (I'm not at all) -- the
emotions expressed by the characters are touching and the conflicts still
relevant.

As far as the animation in the movie goes, it is never less than excellent.
Besides the special effects sections (the parting of the Red Sea being the
most ambitious and breathtaking of all), the character animation is superb.
Each character is different and distinct, with this quality most noticable
when Moses is leading his people. Every person walking behind him, most of
whom have only seconds of screen time, is unique. As an animation
enthusiast, I appreciate this unwillingness to cut corners. Also standout
in this production is the appropriate and effective combination of computer
graphics and traditional hand-drawn animation. The dream/history sequence

that plays out in heiroglyphics on the palace wall is an effective use of
computer graphics in a 3-D setting that wouldn't work as well with
traditional animation, but the movie isn't overburdened by CG shortcuts
that just look fake.

The storytelling is also very well done. I have read reviews that say it
changed the Bible story too much, but the movie flows well and has a good
sense of pacing. Although I've never read the Bible story, the key points
I've heard of are included, and it seems the spirit of the story is intact.

The music, for the most part, is very good as well. "River Lullabye" and
"Through Heaven's Eyes" are beautiful in that they have a more
middle-eastern feel to them, with a broader range of instruments than the
hit "When you believe", which in the ending credits is sung by divas Mariah
Carey and Whitney Houston.

One complaint: The Steve Martin/Martin Short scene is bad, bad, bad. The
characters seem borrowed from too many Disney movies: as snide, snooty
henchmen with no character development, they are also way too modernized to
fit the theme of the story. And their "Playing With the Big Boys" song is
terrible -- I just want to fast-forward through it. That scene
notwithstanding, I think the movie is worth watching, for both children and
adults.

1-0 out of 5 stars not very good
I know many rated it very high, but this movie was very disapointing. The graphics are not great, the songs are below average at best, the story "more or less" follows the biblical accounts, but worse, the characters are not attractive. I found Moses a reluctant participant, The Pharaoh a good guy and God a little sadistic (perhaps the authors should have emphasised what really went on with slavery, but then this is a film for kids). I shook my head a few times, wondering how such a wonderful and powerful historical account like Exodus could be rendered as lifeless and sadly my kids were just turned off by the story (as was I). My son's comment was "it is so much better when you read it from the Bible" and I have to agree.

I am still waiting for a good account of the Exodus to show up on film. Perhaps (instead of using their imagination to fill in the gaps) the writers should just follow the biblical text when making their movie... It has lasted and will last longer than their films will anyway.

Was the movie a good biblical account? Not bad, but not good either. The author took alot of his own inspiration when making the film. Is the movie good for kids? Perhaps some will like it... But most of the ones I know left the room before the end of the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Movie!!
When I first saw it when I was like 8 or so, I liked it... and now, many years later, I still do! The songs are breathtaking and original, and match the scences. The characters, storyline, colour... oh, the list goes on! It's a fabulous movie! ... Read more

If you want some morality tossed lightly with education in the videos your children watch, then this is a series for you. These Christian vegetables with a hip sensibility (sample dialogue: "You are so early-'90s.") play out a Batman-meets-Back to the Future scenario when a young asparagus tells his dad a lie to get out of trouble. That lie, embodied by a space alien, grows until it threatens the entire vegetable village, provoking Larry the Cucumber to heed the signal in the sky and hop into his flying Larrymobile designed by the eccentric and fallible inventor Alfred Asparagus. Action, music, and a Jerry-Springer-style deconstruction at the end with a blink-and-you-missed-it reference to God make for a half hour of involving and wholesome entertainment. --Kimberly Heinrichs ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another VeggieTale movie to add to your collection!
Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato are again hosting another VeggieTales video, this time giving a lesson in telling the truth (John 8:32b "The truth will set you free"). The story begins in the small town of Brumblyburgwhere Jerry and Jimmy are 'supposed' to be monitoring the area for aliens. And when an 'unidentified object' lands, it's up to Larry-Boy (aka Larry the Cucumber) to find out what it is. But Junior Asparagus is the first one to find it; it's an alien called Fib. And when Junior gets into some trouble, Fib gives him the perfect solution; to tell a little lie which of course wouldn't hurt anybody! Junior soon finds out that his little friend can become a HUGE problem! It's up to Larry-Boy and his Larry-Boy Mobile to save the day... if everything goes well...

Totally hilarious, I find this Veggie Tale to be thoroughly enjoying. With great Christian values, they're perfect for kids, teenagers, and even have adults interested with the wry humor, catchy and fun songs, and terrific animation and plot.

This tape is especially hilarious, from the very first part where Larry-Boy explains to Bob how times are changing and that he'll be 'left behind'. Then comes the joke about 'The Invasions of the Cow-Snatchers" which just cracked me up! Then the way they make fun of batman with the light in the sky... and I could go on! I especially love it when Larry-Boy's 'butler' yells to the computer, "BOOT!" Then of course Larry-Boy himself is so funny, with his 'super suction-cups'. The world premier of "Larry-Boy's Music Video" is simply hilarious and very catchy. I keep singing, "Lean, mean, green machine. Larry-boy!" The song is sung fantastically by Christian music artist Nicole Mullen. And I mean it when I say she sang fantastically, she has a terrific voice!

If you liked this VeggieTale, don't miss out on "King George and the Ducky", "Lyle the Kindly Viking", and "The Ultimate Silly Songs Countdown", three of which are my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT MOVIE; AND THAT'S NO FIB!
This is my five year old daughter's FAVORITE Veggie-Tales video! It's wacky, it's funny, it has a really catchy music video at the end, but best of all, it has LARRY-BOY! If there's one thing preschoolers can relate to it's a SUPER-HERO - and this one is truly unique, with his cucumber body and super-suction (plunger) ears! In this story, Junior Asparagus is taught an important lesson about the dangers of lying; namely, a seemingly innocent LITTLE fib can quickly grow into a BIG, MEAN, NASTY MONSTER of a fib, (that sprouts legs and arms and destroys everything in it's path)! This video might be a bit scary for youngsters under the age of four, but for older preschoolers,(and their parents), it's sure to be a hit! A "Must Have" for every Veggie-tales collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Veggietales Best!
Okay, you HAVE to buy this! It's such a great way to teach a child about lying, but making it in such a way that they don't forget it. Just telling a child not to lie sometimes doesn't quite drive the message home, but Larryboy sure does! The only thing that might be slightly objectionable here is when the huge space alien lie tries to eat Larry and is actually in his mouth. My little guy got upset about that part because he loves Larry. Other than that, we laughed ourselves silly! I got this because my child decided to tell a lie and I wanted to make sure he actually understood what could happen when lies are told. Thanks to Veggietales for making a great lesson so much more interesting and unforgettable. We now have a Larrymobile, complete with suction cup ears, and Archibald and Larryboy. Great toy! So, if you want to laugh until you cry while teaching a VERY important lesson, grab this one. It's just nothing short of awesome! Just beware, I'm now going around most of the day talking like Archibald and being asked such questions as "what are you going to make the Larrymobile do now, Archibald? What are you inventing? Can I help?" It gets difficult trying to imitate all those voices all day! Sure is a bunch of fun! Now the Larrymobile has a pizza machine on it so Larryboy won't get hungry saving Bumblyburg, and also a bed so that he can take a nap when he's tired. The imagination just never stops with these videos!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Video is Great!
My 3 year old loves this video.

I love the concept of this one. A small alien falls to earth. It grows as Junior keeps fibbing until he takes over Junior and the City.

Once again the Veggie Tales folks come up with a gem that is extremely well written and well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment and moral values for kids any age!
I can't say enough good things about this video and the rest of the Veggietales videos. I have 5 children, ages 15-2 years, and they all like Veggietales...even though my oldest will not admit it. My 2-year-old is very busy and doesn't sit still for anything....except Veggietales. No matter how many times I play the video, he acts like it's the first time seeing it....it never gets old! Not only are these cartoons wonderfully written and animated, they teach everything from sharing, caring, honesty, bravery, obedience, respect, self-respect, responsibity, and most importantly....believing in God, seeking His will in our lives, and realizing His abundant love for all of us. You can't go wrong with these videos, they are the best! ... Read more

Weeds are taking over Bumblyburg--flowery, talkative, sunglasses-wearing weeds that bear a striking resemblance to the clichéd blathering oldladies who enjoy nothing more than yakking about the neighbors over a game of mahjong. No, these aren't ordinary weeds; these weeds are interconnected, and they are multiplying at an alarming rate. What could cause these wild plants to bloom at such a rapid pace? Why, they're just keeping pace with the rumors that are flying around town.Only Larry-Boy can save the city. Or can he?

Larry-Boy doesn't have the powers of most superheroes; in fact, his main sources of might are his suction-cup ears and an overeducated butler. Yet in this installment of VeggieTales, Larry-Boy's real skill is in teaching us that "God doesn't want us to tell stories that can hurt."In the lively series that has "Sunday morning values, and Saturday morning fun," a group of vegetables provides moral lessons for everyday life.Strong on Christian themes and light on seriousness, VeggieTales has enough humor for adults to appreciate and enough fun for the kids. While this episode may have us longing for the not-present Bob the Tomato and Silly Songs, there's still enough of the impressive computer animation and appealing story lines to make this a valuable resource for teaching kids right from wrong. --Jenny Brown ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The quality of Veggie videos keeps getting better!
Bumblyburg, look out...Larry-Boy's on the job! After Junior and Laura hear a rumor, they "share" it with a weed that soon becomes a monster! Can Larry-Boy stop it? We'll have to see!

Lots of knock-off from Batman: The Larry-cave, his nice slave Alfred, and a tight, cool-looking suit!

The VeggieTales videos are pretty cool, lots of fun for kids --and grown-ups too!

Beware though: this video gets just a tad more intense than VeggieTales...at one point a giant weed rips open the ground and slides out, serpent-like, grabbing one person. Larry-Boy also gets slightly beat-up at one point. It just might be a little scary for younger kiddos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Tale for older kids
This is one of the longer stories, and the message is probably better suited to older children of school age who are more apt to experience what a rumor is. My one year old daughter loves ALL her Veggie Tales and this one is no exception! Larry the Cucumber as a batman-like Larry Boy is just hysterical! The Rumor Weed is every bit the menacing evil nemisis, but in a funny gossipy-old-lady kind of way. As usual, Junior Asparagus becomes the voice of reason and helps to save Bumblyburg. A great addition to any Veggie Tales collection! Fun for the whole family, and a wonderful alternative to typical Saturday morning tv which is filled with advertising and inappropriate messages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment!
This is such a cute, cute video! They need to make more of these Larryboy videos because, quite frankly, they're hysterical. I love the spoof on Batman and when Larryboy needs to help the town of Bumblyburg, they shine the light in the sky just like Batman. My son loved this so much that we had to go out to the local Christian bookstore and get a Larrymobile. Yes, amazon definitely needs to get more toys online! Don't be afraid to get this one, the morals are fabulous and teach kids not to start lies about others that are not true. The rumor weed mother grows huge, complete with the 50s style sunglasses, long earrings and that "dahling, did you hear the one about..." is just hysterical. You'll be laughing through this one - the imagination is just awesome! WE want more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Moral Story
My now 8 year old still loves this one. She's had is for about 3 years, and still watches it on occassion. Well worth the money, both for entertainment and the lessons it teaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars I...am...that....hero!!!
It seems that Big Idea can't go wrong. My sister and I have enjoyed all their videos for years, and this one is no exception. Who ever knew veggietables could be cute? I love how they include little "in jokes" for the kids and parents. Ie., the whole Larryboy theme shows what would happen if Batman turned into a cucumber. But at the same time, kiddies and the grown-ups get a moral lesson at the end. This time, a "don't spread rumors" value is the case. Jr. Asparagus and Laura Carrot misunderstand a figure of speech quoted by Alfred (Archibald). Archy said that he had to "recharge his batteries", so naturally, Jr. and Laura think he's a robot. A talking weed hears the story, and spreads a rumor all over Bumbleyburg. So it's up to Larryboy to stop it!!
My sister and I love the Biblical morals/lessons put into every VeggieTales film, and this one is our personal favorite. The mother weed might be a little scary for the kids, but overall it's a sweet, entertaining story that families around the world will enjoy. ... Read more

Larry the Cucumber has slept in late. But that's all right because the plucky Jr. Asparagus is at the ready to narrate the story of the wall of Jericho with Bob the Tomato. This half-hour computer-animated video from the VeggieTale folk is another bouncy retelling of a traditional Bible story. We follow Josh (alas, Larry appears!), who has taken over for Moses leading the Israelites to the Promised Land. In their way is the city of Jericho, full of nasty French peas armed with purple slushies to lob below. Focusing on being obedient to God's wishes, this video has more Christian gist than most and is a bit long (the tales are better when they're shorter), but for any fan, it's a keeper. There are plentyof hip songs, and Larry puts his own slant on receiving word from a messenger of God. The Silly Song with Larry segment is one of the silliest: "The Song of the Cebú." --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cleverly written and funny.
I think that "Josh and the Big Wall" is the funniest retelling of the Isrealites and their defeat of Jericho. While entertaining kids, it inconspicuously teaches them about obeying God and their parents. "Veggie Tales" are the funnest way to learn about God and virtues. A wonderful video, cleverly written, and funny. And the Silly Songs with Larry segment is very entertaining, too! The song about a boy and his three "cebus" (say-boo)is imossible to not like. The tune, the words, and the story is irresistable! A #1 in kid's videos. Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber present the idea of obedience in a positive way. They always talk about improving and obeying so kids won't feel bad about not having obeyed in the past. A GREAT VIDEO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very funny telling of the Jericho story.
It's not what you expect and that is what makes this video so effective. The VeggieTales team has another hit on their hands with this clever re-telling of the story of Joshua and the wall of Jericho.

Any "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" fan will particularly enjoy the casting of the French peas atop the wall of Jericho.

This is a superb Christian video for both children and adult children alike. Larry's silly "Cebu" song will stick in your head like glue.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorites.
I love Veggie tales and this episode is absolutely one of my favorites. It is so funny and it teaches a good message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I can't say anything bad about Veggietales, all episodes are funny, loaded with educational values, what more can you ask for? I own thirteen tapes and I can't wait to get the Jonah movie, great movie! If you've seen the movie and have NOT seem this episode, buy it! You wont be sorry! IT'S SOOO FUNNY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't taunt this!
OH MY GOSH. i have always loved these videos... within my college-aged friend base, we have _all_ the shows. ... All i can think of when i see the peas on the wall is that the creators have watched WAY too much monty python. These guys must have so much fun!

There is no way that these films are just for kids. There are so many little things that children would never pick up on. Believe me, these films are a must for your collection. No only will they have you rolling, but they teach amazing values as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this video!
We have most of the Beginner's Bible series, and this is one of his favorites. I do not believe these videos are intended for toddlers - my son still loves them at six but he really didn't watch them until he was three or four.

1-0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking
Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! This video is so bad it doesn't even get a ratting. The narrartor is dull and boaring. The acting is pathetic and the way the story is told is down right bad. My fiffteen month old who usually loves to sit down and whatch christian video was highly annnoyed. He was so not ammused he began to cry. This is deffinatly not for kids. I don't even reccamend it for preeteens or teenagers. It's long boaring, unentertaining, and lacks good music. I rather stick to talking vegetables and puppets (Veggie Tales and Great Bible Adventuures.

2-0 out of 5 stars I took it back for a refund!
I got this video for my kids, but took it back. I expect a Bible video to be accurate & this one was not. It had Eve being created after the Sabbath instead of on Friday. This is a gross error & there really isn't any excuse for it. If you want your kids to learn the truth, don't let them watch this one! ... Read more

Amazon.com essential video

Another winning video from the VeggieTales folk. To teach Larry the Cucumber about self-esteem, Bob the Tomato tells the story, slightly renamed, of David and Goliath. Jr. Asparagus plays the young man who wants to prove himself and will face the towering pickle. These adorable tales, brightly animated and containing bouncy songs, teach Christian-lite values in an entertaining way. Telling a single story (instead of the normal two), this 30-minute video goes on a bit too long, but it does contain the funniest entry in the "Silly Songs with Larry" series: Love My Lips. --Doug Thomas ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Everybody!
My daughter loves this David and Goliath re-telling. So do my nephews, who received this video for Christmas. They sing along to the catchy songs and laugh at the jokes, but most importantly - they *get* the message.

The Veggie Tales series is popular in my family, My husband and I adore the silly songs, my 30 year old brother likes to watch them, and even the great grandma appreciates them! Fun, clean humor is such a rarity nowadays that adults have to "resort" to kids videos.

5-0 out of 5 stars VEGGIE TALE "BIBLE" CHARACTERS "ACT THEIR HEARTS OUT"
I just spent a delightful day watching this video, over, and over, and over. My Granddaughter, Brooke, age 3 knows the story of David and Goliath by heart ! She has become a theologian. What an incredible video idea. Brooke also knows the other Bible Stories, as she has a collection of the Veggie Tales. Her Mother and Father sing the songs and are also learning the stories with her; just in case they had not known them before, or needed to be reminded again. What a great idea ! You will fall in love with all the Veggie Tale Characters who "act their hearts out" making the Bible come alive in your homes. Hats off to these wonderful people who bring us this worthwhile project ! Who said "the world is going to hell in a handbasket" ? They just might be wrong, when little children are growing up learning the truth of the scripture acted out in a great and entertaining way ! Grandparents need not call and ask for gift ideas any longer. . .just give them Veggies ! A great diet !

4-0 out of 5 stars Great show
This is such a great video to teach your child about self esteem. Plus, it's just plain silly! I really like Larry Boy and his suction cup ears. Boy, do these guys really like to act silly! My toddler just loves watching these guys and it really is refreshing to see something so positive for a change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Guys Can Do Big Things Too!
I don't have too much to say, except that I really enjoy the sincerity of this Veggie Tales episode (and all Veggie Tale episodes), and the music and themes are adorable and catchy! Of all the Tales I've seen (and that's a lot), this one is my favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention Grandparents...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Story in a Great Package
Myself, my wife, and my 3yo daughter saw this in the theater and loved it. We bought it as soon as it hit the shelves here on the east coast, and we were not disappointed. I would have to say that the DVD release is the most feature-filled package I've ever owned or rented! This thing is busting at the seams! 3 commentaries (including a hillarious character commentary track that will have parents and older children rolling on the floor), a great studio tour by Phil, outtakes and rendering error... you name it!

The movie itself was really good itself. Jonah is a hard story to follow, and if you're not christian and you're shocked by the religious content - hey, it's Jonah. I mean, c'mon... You're watching a bible story and you're surprised by the religious angle?

I thought Big Ideas did a good job of bringing the story to kids without corrupting it. I think they did an even better job of bringing the story to our homes in a way that'll keep us poking through the features for weeks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good movie, catchy songs, great moral
We bought the DVD for our family and saw it for the first time on Easter Sunday. As in the Veggie tales videos and DVD's, the songs are catchy (in fact, they stick in your head like glue), the storyline is humorous and the Veggietales folks manage to teach a good lesson. In this case, the moral is that God is merciful and compassionate, that we should be the same, but Jonah just "didn't get the point" (he wanted God to destroy the Ninevites(sp), and in fact, was looking forward to witnessing their destruction). The Jonah tale ends just as is does in the Book of Jonah; my son had seen me reading the Bible, requested to see the Book of Jonah (thanks Veggietales people for inspiring him), and the Bible indicates that Jonah does not repent and show compassion towards others. Not a happy ending, which is why the Veggietales people probably wrapped the modern-day plot around it and ended the movie with a big musical number.
My four-year-old has been watching the DVD almost every day and
has learned what "mercy" and "compassion" mean. In fact, this past Sunday was the Feast of Divine Mercy, and sure enough, when
the priest made the announcement during mass, my son picked up on the word "mercy" and related it to the Jonah DVD.
We also enjoyed the second DVD; I especially enjoyed the studio tour and my son and teenage daughter liked the outtakes.
In summation, I'm glad that we added this movie to our DVD/video collection. I just discovered Veggietales a couple of months ago (I checked a few out of the local library). I wish I had known about the series 10 years ago, when my two teenagers were younger. However, all three of my children love to sing along with the CD's and sing-alongs, as well as watch the videos and DVD's. Shhhh...even I play some of the Veggietunes when I'm alone in the car. Those songs are TOO catchy! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars The question is, "What did YOU learn?" A lot of fun!
The question is, "What can I say?" Even for a Veggie Tales movie, I love taking it in with my little girl. I do not get sick of it, not at all. And it is well worth the lesson learned throughout the film. I think it is just as entertaining as "Harry Potter", which I refuse to watch, or even read for that matter. The people behind Veggie Tales are just awesome, because they are not looking for credit, and they deserve a lot. They do so much for God's kingdom! They don't ask for the world, yet they reach the world, and this generation of our children, and even some of the adults who need a wake up call every now and then!

I love how they made someone such as Archibald Asparagus the character of Jonah. But yet it still has Larry the Cucumber, Bob the Tomato, Pa Grape, and even a silly caterpiller to stick with Jonah, almost all the way! The song at the end (Jonah Was a Prophet) should hit home with everyone, not just as a "lesson", so to speak, but also as a song of fun and entertainment. All of the songs are wonderful, as the movie begins strictly on a fun note with "Billy Joe McGuffrey" and everyone cutting up and just having a blast in the van on the way to the Twippo concert. It also it gives me a very sobering look at myself and how many second chances I've had in my pathetic life! Yeah, I actually admit that! I've come a long way in 29 years. God is so good to us, let's not take that for granted. That's another thing that this movie very strongly states. (Don't you get it?!) I still have a long way to go.

Compassion and mercy, and a whole lot of fun! And you have to watch the movie all the way to the very, very end, especially the credits!! HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY!!!!!!!! HEY HEY, OH HO HO!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Y ou Have to get this Video!
Boy is this cute! What a great way to show the story of Jonah to your kids. It's neat how the pirates explain at the end of the movie how Jonah really didn't understand God's compassion for the people of Nineveh, the fish slappers! Boy, how funny - fish slappers! It's pretty funny seeing the Ninevites going around slapping each other with fish. The imagination of these guys just is something else. Wonder how old they REALLY are?! But, the song "Second Chances" is worth the price of the video alone. The gospel group Anointed sings it and by golly are they talented! I'd never heard them before but wow, what a great song! Feels like church! My three-year-old just looked at me and said, "Mommy, that's a great song!" So yes, we dance to that song hands down. The only thing is that it may not hold the attention of the younger toddlers since it is a movie and things have to be explained more. i.e. what is Nineveh, why is Jonah going there, etc. But it definitely is worth every penny you spend on this video. I am just so very glad that we got it. Archibald Asparagus is awesome as Jonah and his camel Reginald has a looking glass just like Archibald. Very, very imaginative, entertaining and fun. Thanks Big Idea!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jonah Scores
You just can't get any funnier than the Veggie Tales movies! Wholesome viewing with zany, well written scripts that pretty much stick to the Biblical stories which inspired the movies. Jonah is not a disappointment. The Jonah character is haughty, snobby, and very much human as he struggles to submit to orders from God that he finds totally unacceptable. He ultimately hooks up with a group of Pirates who give sailing the high seas hilarious new meaning! These guys are lucky to get the boat out of harbor. Carlisle, Jonah's pushy traveling buddy, is a hoot and proves that friendship can be a powerful thing. An angelic choir visiting Jonah in the belly of the whale gives the movie an energetic, soulful uplift. The writers who create the Veggie Tales movies are so good at tongue in cheek humor - listen close and you'll find some sly humor that will make adults chuckle. Great movie!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than first thought
OK, so I already posted a review on this video, but after watching it several more times with my son (who keeps insisting we watch the story about Jesus), I realized I made a hasty post and here I am trying to make up for it. This movie really does a great job about telling the story of the resurrection to my almost-3-year-old. My first concern was that it did not accurately explain how to "get to heaven." And since that is such a major part of our faith, I thought that was a major disapointment in the video.

HOWEVER, after watching it repeatedly, I have to say that it's not really that far off, and I can make any clarifications myself when my son and I discuss things. It's so hard for me to find good Bible story videos appropriate for this age group, I'm glad to have one that my son really enjoys and that covers the subject as close as this one does. But I will still be careful to have the discussions with my son, and not just let the video do the teaching.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good BUT One major problem....
We have several videos in this series, and my nearly-3-year-old son absolutely loves watching them. They hold his interest well, they're just the right length, and they tell the Bible stories in a way that he can understand. They've really helped him learn the stories, and he even likes to act out the stories on his own and retell them. (We also have the videos about David and Goliath, Jonah, Daniel, Moses, Noah.)

Overall, I've found these videos to be pretty accurate, mainly just adjusting things to make them suitable for the very young. BUT There is a major flaw in this one about Easter--The disciples ask Jesus about how to get to heaven, and Jesus's reply is about doing good and loving others, not about trusting in Him and His sacrifice and that He is the only way to God. The Christian faith is all about being saved by God's grace, not by our own good works. Of course we are supposed to do good and love others, but that's not how we get to heaven. I know there is a way to explain this to a 3-year-old without just glossing over it that way.

I would have highly recommended this video except that one thing that sounds so little is really a big problem for us as Bible-believing Christians. Get any of the others in this series, but watch out for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video
This video was by far my favorite of the the 'Beginner Bible Series'. After I finished watching it with my four year old grandson, he was able to remember that Jesus was dead and then 'got alive' again. I was a little concerned about how they would handle the crucifixion, but it was a very small part of the video, and only showed the three crosses in a distance.

There were many parts where Jesus was talking to his disciples, and those were great..it made it much more personal hearing the words of the Bible coming out of His mouth. It held my grandson's interest AND my own. Highly recommend this especially as we approach this coming Easter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to 'teach' your kids about Bible stories!
My kids are huge video lovers! They can be picky though when it comes to cartoons that 'teach' something of value...but both of them enjoyed this video and seemed "uplifted" after watching! Another good pick: Veggie Tales!! Wholesome, Christian FUN!!

4-0 out of 5 stars This wonderful story about Jesus
This is a wonderful story, it's great, it has everything good about it, but, it is something about it that it's just something about it that just doesn't seem right. It makes it get not as good as a 5-star-movie. ... Read more

The latest in an animated Christian children's series, this videoteaches kids the importance of standing up to peer pressure through a thinly disguised Bible story. When Bob the Tomato, our host, sees that Larry the Cucumber is trying to fit into what's "cool" by wearing an oven mitt as a hat, he tells Larry that it's important to be true to yourself no matter what the consequences. Bob tells Larry a story about three vegetables, Rag, Shack, and Benny, who are held hostage in a factory and forced to make chocolate bunnies. When the owner, Mr. Nezzar, takes a liking to them, he offers to promote them if they will only worship a giant chocolate bunny.

The story is based on the book of Daniel in the Old Testament, in which three friends stand up to King Nebuchadnezzar, refusing to worship a false idol. The slavery and death themes may be too dark for kids under 7, but the animation and songs are fun. --Elisabeth Keating ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Crisp Bible Storytelling From Big Idea's VeggieTales
Fans of "Toy Story," The Bible, or fresh salads (guess that covers everybody) will enjoy VeggieTales, half-hour videos telling faithful (ungarnished?), fun Bible story adaptations starring a tomato (Bob), cucumber (Larry), carrot (Laura) and asparagas (Junior) aimed to kids'(and adults')pressures and problems.

"Rack, Shack, and Benny," (aka Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) is one of the series' best. It retells the story of the Fiery Furnace as a parable about peer pressure with catchy songs ("The Bunny Song" is a favorite despite its intentionally inappropriate message, "Dance of the Cucumber" is a hilarious "silly song" and tension breaker), cute one-liners ("What does being a junior executive mean?" "It means you have to wear a tie.") and kid-friendly suspense leading to God's climactic rescue where the three ("Now there's four, and one looks real shiny") are saved. The lesson is summed at the end with a pinch of good humor.

Kudos (Bacos?) to Phil Vischer and his merry band at Big Idea for creating a series which, like its stars, are good and good for you. It's a series to relish, and HIGHLY recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Not About Nutrition.
Veggie Tales' RACK, SHACK, AND BENNY is a retelling of the Biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. You know, those three guys who were best friends of Daniel (the guy famous for being thrown into a lion's den and interpretting the handwriting on the wall) who were thrown into a fiery furnace for their refusal to worship anyone but God. Instead of Babylon, this Veggie version of the story takes place in a far-off candy factory where world famous Nezzer Chocolate Bunnies are made. Larry, Bob, and Junior Asparagus star as the title trio.

Like most Veggie Tales, this one is filled with humor and wit that appeals not only to kids, but to adults as well. The lesson in the film is not about proper nutrition (as some seem to think), but instead is about standing up when you think things are wrong and not compromising one's integrity by bowing down to peer pressure.

The Silly Songs with Larry in this episode is popular "Dance of the Cucumber". Look for the rip on Disney parody, if you're not observant it will pass you by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Even Without the Bunny Song
Veggie Tales star in the story of the Fiery Furnace. Rack, Shack and Benny are faced with a challenge to their faith - bow down to a god other than the God they believe in or die. Our three heroes bravely, albeit a bit hesitantly at first, stand up for what they believe in and get sent to the Fiery Furnace. But their God remembers them just as they remembered Him and intercedes in a majestic way, amid plenty of light and awestruck bystanders. The songs in this movie are catchy and the message is solid - stand up for what is right, no matter the cost. The Silly Songs segment features Larry performaing "The Dance of the Cucumber" which is the most hilarious Silly Song ever!!! The translation by Bob the Tomato is guaranteed to leave you laughing as you watch Bob's gradual slide from mildly miffed to all out aggravated at his friend Larry the Cucumber! See this movie - you'll finish it cheered and smiling.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic Veggietales adventure
This is a classic episode and I love it. The silly song is absolutely hilarious. The story is a good one too. Kids and adults will love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good message, may be too much for really young children
I really like all the Veggie Tales videos, and so do my children. However, since my children are very young (1 and 4) they found this one is their least favorite. They find parts of the video scary and prefer to watch all their other tapes instead. The music is great, and so is the message but it's probably better for older children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracles of Jesus
I highly recommend the Miracles of Jesus. It shows true biblical truth! It has amazing art work too! And most importantly the cartoon proclaims Christ as the Son of God our Saviour who shed his blood for the remission of sins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hear and Obey God
I was not expecting a great deal from this children's video. I was reviewing it for our Christian quarterly publication as objectively as possible and I was very pleasantly surprised. I am not a fan of animated Biblical presentation, but will make an exception here. The Miracles of Jesus was delivered in such a fashion as to draw in young viewers with the contemporary young characters in the lead roles. Young adventurers pass through a portal, taking them back to Biblical times, where they learn to walk, as Jesus walked, by faith in God and trusting Him to lead their way. An outstanding message, delivered in a simple, easy to understand format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie
I am pleased with this movie. My son is learning different Bible stories, and I wanted to reinforce his lessons with some videos. This movie is 30 minutes long and a good representation of the Miracles. My son really likes the series of movies "The Greatest Adventure Stories from the Bible". ... Read more
