4-0 out of 5 stars My 1st Pilates Tape: A Good Introduction...
I've flipped through pages of The Pilates Body book & before buying this video, I've never taken a Pilates class. So given my limited exposure to Pilates (& 3 years of practicing Yoga) I bought this video & tried it out.

Together, two instructors each demonstrate pilates motions in two separate parts. They clearly offer how to safely accomplish the moves at their level & some at reduced fitness levels (such as the sit ups using your thighs if you need to). Out of all the moves in the routine of this tape, there was only one that I couldn't do which involved a push-up type position & taking one or two extremities off the workmat (yikes!). However with some strength & concentration (& practice) that move isn't unachievable - just like all the other moves are not at all unrealistic.

Otherwise, I found the routines they offered were sincerely fun (yes, fun!) & you only need a good mat & a towel for this tape!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning
This is my first Pilates tape. I have numerous yoga tapes, and enjoy them, but wanted to try some Pilates exercises to round out my workout routine. Both instructors are easy to understand, and offer less demanding moves as alternatives. This is always a big plus. Very careful thought went into to the instruction, as the explaination can be followed with little "watching" so you aren't craining your neck to see what is going on as much as with other exercise videos.

There are some familiar positions to yogis on this tape, plank position, downward dog, and a variation of cobra positions. So if you are familiar with yoga, you can look forward to something that is known to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improve your posture and lose that tummy!
After having a baby I tried aerobics and weight training but just couldn't lose that stubborn fat around my mid section, within a few weeks of using breaktrough core conditioning pilates I noticed that I was losing my tummy, and as a bonus my posture was improving. I also had less lower back pain from the improved posture. I gave my tape to a friend and am ordering a replacement copy for myself. This is a great tape for someone who is able to do an aerobic workout, but if you are looking for something hardcore, this isn't the tape.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring and Stiff Pilates
This was very disappointing and non motivating instruction. They did not really go over breathing very well, which is so essential in Pilates. Did not provide any good visuals mentally to help you relax and get into the exercises. The women instructors were very boring and stiff. My past instructors at the gym were so much more fun and motivating. I wish they would do a video. Totally inappropriate title of "Breakthru Pilates"

5-0 out of 5 stars CHALLENGING & GREAT WORKOUT
I bought this about three weeks ago and have been practicing it three times a week. I love it!!! This is the first time I do Pilates. I would say that you need a strong abs to do the exercise but nothing that you can't build on over time. I started to lift light weight for four months already and happy to say that I could actually do the push-up exercise even though it's still challenging.

The only thing I wish they explain more is the breathing during the exercise. As a beginner, I tend to get confused on when to exhale or inhale. I would definitely look for more dvd series from these two people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT!
I bought my reformer and only had the video that came with it.Despite the fact that this video only had 4 stars when I was browsing, I bought it because it was almost out of stock.Demand always says something!
I love this tape!
He talks you through the class as three pilates teachers perform the movements. It is a beautiful video and his instructions create almost a flow.I am new to pilates and I can't do everything on this tape, but I like that.I do a little bit and every day I do a little more.
I think it is a 5 star tape!

4-0 out of 5 stars This workout feels like a refreshing vacation
Brent Anderson coaches three women in the use of the Pilates Reformer, using the Polestar Allegro Reformer for the workout.Watch the woman in front, Alice Becker Denovaro, whose form and comprehension of the moves are impeccable.

Polestar is known for its use of imagery, so if you're looking for a detailed description of body placement for each exercise and its variation, you may not feel satisfied with this workout. But if you have prior beginning reformer experience, you'll find this tape will provide some apt images in the instruction, some challenging moves and a glorious stretched out feeling at the end.

The tape includes bridge positions, lots of footwork, standing, hip openers, and upper body work. There is a lot of variety in the use of the reformer and the part of the body being worked, so don't expect to lay on your back for fifty minutes! There is also live percussion music accompanying the workout, which provides a lush environment to exercise in.That, along with Anderson's emphasis on breathing, results in an extremely relaxing and enjoyable time with the reformer, at the same time that you are doing some pretty amazing things with your body.

The biggest problem I have with the tape is that Anderson limits his description of the moves to the Allegro Reformer, which I do not have. This machine uses different colored cords, so when he requests the use of two red and one yellow cord, I'm not sure if that corresponds to two or three cords on my reformer. It would have been helpful for him to have consistently added, "we want heavy resistance for this," or a similar remark to help those of us using less expensive models. There are many of us and we are all looking for new tapes!

With that small quibble aside, I recommend this tape for anyone looking for a fun reformer experience with atmosphere included. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not for beginners
This video assumes you know the jargon of both dance and pilates. It is not instructional. It is for people who know pilates and dance and would like a new exercise routine. There is minimal emphasis on breathing, so you better know your pilates breathing before you press play. The models wear black pants against navy mats; try to guess where your legs should be because you cannot tell what they are doing on many moves. She's saying we have two more, and I'm still trying to figure out what she's doing. If I wanted this type of frustration, I would have joined a health club.

I know a little bit about pilates from another video, so I was familiar with some of the terminology. But I don't know what second pilates position is. I recognized PliƩ from Angelina Ballerina. I thought progressive meant it would start out with an introductory session and become more advanced with each of the next three sessions. Maybe progressive means something else to pilates insiders.

No onscreen countdown. No visual or verbal indication that we are on to the next segment, so keep your watch handy. I think I did three of the four workouts. Why did she not mention when one ends and the next begins? And for just that little extra annoyance, yes there are ads at the beginning. So start it up, go do a chore and come back when the menu appears. Then you can watch some in-shape people do some very fast difficult-to-follow routines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for mix it up time
I have pre-schoolers.10 minutes is just enough time to get something going without being crazy sore or anything. This is not strenuous, you won't "feel the burn" unless you are a true couch potato. But for people who have to live their lives post-workout, it's great.I'll do a section if I'm tempted to skip a day, because you can at least do the 10 minute total body to keep in the habit.Gillies is a NYC studio instructor who knows her stuff and has a dedicated student for demonstrating the modifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Really Like This DVD
I was looking for creative and quick pilates-inspired workouts with good variety and focus on the "trouble zones" - I got all that and more with the Liz Gillies Four 10-Minute Target-Tone Workouts DVD. The DVD consists of 10-minute pilates workouts for Arms, Abs, Thighs and Buns, plus a bonus 10-minute total-body workout which lives up to its name. Each 10-minute segment leaves me feeling like I got a good workout without working too long or too hard. I also find that it doesn't get boring after repeated use, and that choosing a single segment works well as a warm-up or cool-down when attached to a longer workout.

The instructor, Liz Gillies, takes you through each step and describes proper form without a lot of chit-chat, but gives you an occasional motivating comment to help keep you going. In addition to Liz's optimism, there's a time clock that appears at the bottom of the screen as a "workout countdown" which gives you added motivation to stay strong throughout the workout. Beginners and less motivated folks can also take advantage of the modified (easier) versions of each exercise that are demonstrated by one of Liz's assistants. Another nice feature is that the DVD is set up to continue from one section to the next, so you don't have to interrupt your workout to grab the remote if you want to do more than one section in a row. The music and setting are pleasant, but for those of you who live or die by what you see and hear, I must confess that the ambience is not the greatest (It's not bad though!) The workouts are performed in a studio and the background music is up-tempo and does not overpower Liz's instructions.

All in all, I found this video to be worthwhile because it allows me to focus on specific body target zones and gives me the flexibility to choose a workout length between 10 and 50 minutes, depending on my schedule (and motivation). I would like to point out, however, that these 10-minute segments are not very intense workouts, so if you're looking for significant sweat and burn and ache, you'd either have to be out of shape/have difficulty performing pilates-type movements or just need to pick a more challenging video. This video works for me because I'm in my 20's and I have difficulty motivating myself to do high-impact, strenuous exercises at the end of my high-impact, strenuous workdays. If you're looking for a workout video similar to this but with a little more intensity, I highly recommend 10 Minute Solution Pilates with Lara Hudson - in fact, it's my new favorite DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast moving Pilates-based exercises
Overall, I enjoy Liz Gillies approach to some of the Pilates mat-based exercises. While in general I prefer the classic sequence done in the classic manner, sometimes it's nice to change things up a bit.

While mostly Pilates-based, Ms. Gillies also makes use of her dance background, particularly in the Buns section.A few lunges and cat-based positions are used here (some of that may actually be from yoga), but she does include some variations on the Leg Circles and Pelvic Lifts.

The Legs/Thighs section includes some variations on the Pilates Side Kicks and some ballet floor barre (e.g., developpe and passe). This is a fast moving section- so much so that even Gillies' form seemed to suffer a little bit. However, you can definitely feel it working.

The Arms section is Gillies' variation on the Standing Sculpting Series from the Pilates syllabus. She includes some variation on more traditional weight-lifting and does some of the work while balancing on the balls of the feet.I like that approach- it definitely forces you to concentrate on your powerhouse while working your arms.

The Abs section includes variants on the Hundred, the Roll Up and the Pilates Abdominal Series. This section more than any other on the tape was targeted towards those new to Pilates- she does a lot of non-traditional "setups" and then modifies many of the exercises.Still challenging, but not necessarily what you get from a more classic Pilates workout.

The Total Body section is my favorite. This section includes a lot of work for the upper body- planks, side planks, etc.- so much so that you could alternate it with the Arms section.

This is a nice addition to your Pilates collection, especially for those interested in "Target Toning", but you may want to supplement with some more classical Pilates from Ana Caban or Jennifer Kries.

4-0 out of 5 stars New to pilates
I have done some beginner yoga previously, but this is my first attempt at pilates. The first time I did the workout, I found it difficult because it seemed like they went a little fast.I had to rewind and pause in order to achieve all the poses. Also, you need to be very careful when starting out because this really works your ENTIRE body and if your upper body and back aren't very strong, you might struggle. They do have modifications on the exercises, but they weren't always helpful. The second time I did it was a little easier and after just one session I could tell that I had strengthened my upper body and back more, which made the poses easier.I think persistence and patience is the name of the game here!!These girls make it look so easy, but you can tell they've had lots of practice. The other cool thing is that even if you're doing the other target workouts (bun, thigh, arm, total), you're still targeting your abs (powerhouse) at the same time.My abs feel so tight!I really feel like I'm getting a good workout. And it's quick!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a believer
I'm a believer; I have been using this Pilates On the Go DVD and Yoga for Golfers DVD, for the last 2 months. I'm not a big hitter, my Drives averaged 200 to 220. Since using these DVD's I've seen gradual improvement week by week and now average well over 250 yards. I do each about 2 times a week and it has given me more strength and flexibility. The flexibility has been the key for me; I have much greater torsion on the backswing, which when unleashed equals greater club head speed which equals more distance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best workouts, yet easy
I found this video a creative, fun, yet short workout. One of the best so far, and I have alot of tapes. The tempo and explanation by Karen are easy to follow. It has helped all major areas of the body, although arms are not as intense as butt and thighs. The balls are pretty versatile, but I use dumbells too. I would recommend this to beginners or intermediate exercisers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unique full body toning workout
First of all, I want to note that this video was originally marketed without "Pilates" in the title; my cover simply says "Core Essentials." I'm not sure why Pilates was added in--as others have said, this is definitely not a Pilates workout. Rather, it is a full-body toning workout similar to the first half of one of Karen's early videos, Streamline Fitness.

The workout begins with a simple, 4 minute warm-up to get your body moving; this is followed by 8 minutes of standing strength moves. The exercises consist of traditional squats and crunches, but Karen makes them unique by adding more movement. Although her cuing is excellent, the variety of the moves is a little hard to follow upon first viewing of the tape, but you do get the hang of it. One problem I had with this section is regarding how Karen uses the arms: the arm movements often seem unnecessary and mismatched to the leg work.

The main body of this workout occurs on the floor. Karen continues the legwork with extensions done both on all fours and on the side; she sometimes uses her weighted "genie balls," but the moves are challenging enough without the added weight! She also targets the arms with a tough push-ups sequence as well as several exercises with dumbbells. Karen ends the workout with abs and back exercises followed by a 6 minute cool down.

As always, Karen offers meticulous tips on form throughout. This was an average-to-good workout (I'd actually have given it 3 1/2 stars if I could), but I preferred Karen's Streamline Fitness, which offers additional arm work, a tougher abs section, and relaxing yoga moves as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for your torso, but it's not Pilates
Karen Voight is a new favorite. I find her choreography innovative and her instructions precise and clear. On top of that, she or someone who works for her has great marketing sense. Yeah, I can see why something with a focus on the core would be marketed as "Pilates-based", but it's not. And actually, I believe the original title of this was "Body Reform: Core Essentials".

That aside, I really enjoy this workout. The warmup is very fast-paced but fun and easy to follow; two minutes longer and I wouldn't feel bad about calling it light cardio. I see some hints of tai chi (very subtle) in the first movements, and then some variations on the kickboxing theme. Next onto the standing leg toning. I really liked the variations on deadlifts and she targets the upper part of the torso (waist to shoulders) by changing the arm patterns throughout. What gets me every time are her variations on squats and lunges. She has this cool sequence that starts with a one-leg squat, then pivots, steps forward into a lunge, back into a dip, pivots back into a one-legged squat, and then repeat to the other side. More challenging than it sounds, and she does it at a fast-pace. You're doing maybe six reps at the most on each side, but you're feeling it.

Her floorwork for legs is very efficient. She builds up a sequence of a four-part bent leg lift; again, you're not doing more than ten or twelve repetitions per leg, but by the time you're done you really feel like you've worked on your buttocks. She comes up on all fours for a variation on the donkey kicks that work the triceps and abs (you bend into it- a little difficult to describe) and then uses the Genie ball for leg raises. I did feel these, but not as much as I felt the first floor work.

For the arms, she does a sequence of bent-leg tricep pushups followed by plank. I dread this sequence each time it comes up, but practice does improve form (and endurance). Then she moves into isolation exercises with the dumbbells for the chest and triceps.

Her abwork is tough and creative. She uses a genie ball and dumbbells for several exercises. She also instructs you to use a towel to pad your lower back. She does include exercises for the back and then a cool down.

A lot of "Pilates-based" or "core-focused" videos focus on the abs, maybe the back and some throw in gluteal exercises. Voight rightfully remembers that the torso also includes the shoulders and chest. I wouldn't call this a total body workout (biceps don't get any attention, and there is more overall for the lower body), but it's worth adding into your routine.

My only caveat is that this video is very dependent on the genie ball. It would be difficult to substitute a dumbbell in most places where the ball is used.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Light Weight " workout for anyone already in shape
I recently purchased this video along with Karen's Abdominals and Back. I have tried them both. Contrary to other reviews I found the instructions and moves easy to follow, but as a 55 year old women who works out an hour almost everyday - aerobics and strength training, I found these two tapes to be almost too easy. I used the abs and back tape this AM and felt stretched afterward but sort of guilty - like I didn't work out. These would be good for relieving stress as an end of the day workout - like yoga. I have quite a few of The Firm tapes, Cardio Split, Super Cardio, Super Sculpting, Cardio Burn, all the "Tough" tapes and several of the "Total Body" tapes, which incorporate a lot of toning and pilates like core strengthening and I feel they do more for me when I only have an hour or so a day to devote to a workout. The Firm tapes are good because as you improve you can add heavier weights, ankle weights and increase the challenge.

This tape would be good to develop smooth control on a lot of moves and help people who need back and ab strengthening and beginning toning as well as loosening up tight muscles, but for a person who regularly works out I'm sure they will find them "whimpy".

4-0 out of 5 stars Funky New Moves
Karen really pours her creative energy into this workout. She teaches from a blue full moon type platform with a background of purple that is actually quite relaxing. In her red outfit, the scene becomes rather interesting. I also liked the camera angles in this one. There is plenty of movement and you are never bored.

While you will recognize some of her signature moves, she has also incorporated some new variation. To optimize the results, she believes variety is key. She puts new twists on classic exercises. She has refined all the exercises so you don't waste energy. She has a way of focusing on fewer reps, but you get so much out of each lunge, squat, pushup and ab crunch.

Basically, you are using your own body weight in combination with light resistance. You will also focus on the essential muscles of your arms and legs. Karen has fused the teachings of Joseph Pilates, yoga and ballet with her own body-sculpting techniques.

You will need a pair of Green Genie balls, a set of 5lb. Hand weights, a yoga mat and a towel. One great feature is you don't need a ton of room to do the moves in this video. You can't really substitute a set of 3lb. hand weights for the Genie balls, just so you know. Once you order the video, there is a pamphlet that tells you were you can order the essential tools you need for her videos.

The workout starts with some simple standing stretches and moves into a warming sequence of lunges. If some of the choreography gets a bit much, just be patient. By the third or fourth time you use this tape you will have it down. The first part is the most intense and involves lots of bending at the knee. Gets your heart rate up. Compared to most workout videos, it is really such a short segment.

The workout then moves to "Legs and Butt", focusing on a floor routine, which is quite creative and inspiring. Karen makes sure she tells you what to watch for and gives pointers throughout so you keep concentrating on each exercise.

The "Arms, Back and Torso" segment includes pushups that are combined with yoga moves and I found them quite enjoyable for a change. Then you move into the Abdominal section, which is also a floor routine.

Finally, you "Cool Down" and stretch out. This segment could have been longer. I always want more "stretching!"

40 minutes seems more like 20 for some reason. It is just plain fun and the music keeps you motivated! A bit disappointed with the muffled sound of Karen's voice at times...that is tolerable...yet annoying! Don't let that stop you from purchasing this great workout. Although, I really expected the sound to be of a superior quality as that is what I'm used to with her videos. Did I get a bad video? I don't notice this problem in Total Body Training which is part of the Body Reform series.

Sigh. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging yet restorative!
This is a great workout designed by Tom McCook, whose talents as a Pilates and Yoga teacher really show! By the end of the 45 minute flow practice, I felt like I got a super workout and at the same time felt physically and mentally restored.

I like the way the exercises are sequenced, beginning with warm-up stretches and Pilates movements, then leading into flowing Yoga poses. The Pilates exercises really help establish a good mind-body connection and get you into your core. So the Yoga poses feel safer on the back and joints. I find I can go a lot deeper into the Yoga postures without creating strain.

There's an instructional Basics section prior to the Flow portion of the video which explains proper body positioning, breathing, weight bearing prinicipals - these are a good prep for the Flow.

Overall, Tom McCook gives excellent instruction with a calming and pleasant voice. This video gets better each time I follow it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
Like her other workouts DVD's, this one delivers as well.
You need 2 or 3 lbs weight on this workout, you only need this in the first segment. The workouts are divided into 3 segments.First segment is Upper body{Pilates standing sculpting series}.Simple yet effective and not your usual arms workout. Second segment is Lower Body, she combines yoga and ballet moves plus pilates leg series. You will love this part if you are tired of squats and whatnot and want something new. The third segment is called flow and flexibility which is to me an awesome, awesome stretch!!! It's not just your typical stretch, but {as Ms. Kries words} it feels like a dance{ slow moving dance}.
I noticed the change in my body and posture. My backaches are gone and you will not get tired of doing her workout. It is always fun to do.I have been doing Ms. Kries types of workout for almost a year now and I'm still not bored with it{I also purchased other DVD's of Ms. Kries workouts}.My body is noticeably tone esp. the abs section and it always makes you feel invigorated that you will look forward doing the workout again the next day. Ms Kries is very inspiring and a good motivator. If you are a total begginer,or not familiar with Ms. Kries style watch the tape first bec. she's moving while talking.Position yourself where you can see her movement. It will get a lot easier when you familiarize the moves{ maybe in 3 sessions} You will appreciate this technique when you know the moves and you will not be wasting your time reaching the remote to forward.
Try her and you will be glad you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good workout, but not the core exercises
A fan of Jennifer Kries' "The Method" series of tapes, I bought this DVD without knowing much more than what was described on the cover. It does not include the abdominal and core strengthening exercises that are the foundation of Pilates. However, there are some traditional Pilates moves on this DVD. It is divided into 3 segments, upper body strenthening, lower body strengthening, and stretching, each about 20 minutes long. The upper body segment is done with light weights and is very similar to part of her "The Method Precision Sculpting" video. I found all 3 segments challenging and I feel I will benefit from these exercises. I like having this on DVD so that I can choose which segment to do without having to rewind or fast-forward a tape. Also, the lower body section offers a choice of viewing from 3 different camera angles. The package says there is also an audio option to have music only, but I have not been able to find this on the disc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice full-body workout blending Pilates with other methods
As other reviewers have mentioned, this workout does not contain any of the traditional Pilates mat work, so those who want this will need to look elsewhere. However, if you are looking to try some of the lesser-known Pilates exercises (particularly, the arm series) blended with other methods such as yoga, this is a nice, full-body workout.

This video consists of three separate 20-minute workouts which break down as follows:

1) Upper Body Sculpting--This is the first time that I have ever seen the Pilates arm series featured in a video (the exercises can also be found in Brooke Siler's book The Pilates Body). Instructor Jennifer Kries works out with two others and starts by completing the standing arm series. After a few yoga sun salutations, the workout moves to the floor for variations on the Pilates arm work, and the segment ends with some additional yoga stretches. The Pilates arm series is meant to be done with light weights--the instructors here used 3 lbs., and I used 5 lbs. which made it difficult for me to keep up by the end.

2) Lower Body Sculpting--Jennifer works out solo in this section, which consists of both yoga and Pilates moves. The first half begins with sun saluations and other standing yoga poses. After some brief ballet-type stretches, Jennifer transitions to the floor for the Pilates side kick series, and she again ends the segment with yoga stretches.

3) Flow and Flexibility--This final segment focused on stretching by blending athletic stretch with yoga and ballet; Jennifer is again instructing solo. Like the other two sections, the first half is performed standing, while the second half takes place on the floor. The actual time for this segment was about 16 minutes.

Overall, I enjoyed this workout, finding it to be a nice mix of techniques and a pleasant change from my other workouts. However, I did not particularly like Jennifer Kries as an instructor. First of all, her cuing was inadequate, as she often failed to explain upcoming movements and frequently failed to cue right and left. Furthermore, I found her to be a bit showoff-y at times with her flexibility levels. Despite these flaws, however, I look forward to doing this workout as a break from my usual routine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goddess Sculpting Workout
"Our bodies move in every conceivable plane of motion, in varying ranges of expression. Most traditional exercise formats are comprised of linear one-dimensional or at best two-dimensional movements and are geared towards enhancing or changing appearance, rather than improving the body's efficiency or level of functionality. With this three-dimensional fusion of Pilates, Yoga and Dance, you will feel better, stronger, more flexible." ~Jennifer Kries

Workout 1 - Upper Body Sculpting: Pilates and Yoga helps to sculpt the upper body. You will be enjoying the swan dives and flow of the movements. The setting is beautiful with pink mats against a pastel gray/lavender background. You will be using weights during the first workout. Jennifer works with two instructors you may have seen on additional Method videos.

Workout 2- Lower Body Sculpting: Jennifer takes center stage and you can enjoy the one-on-one instruction stars have been enjoying for years. She is truly art in motion and her body speaks of years of dedication.

You start with sun salutations and go through a deep muscle workout to target all the areas that encourage beautiful lines and curves. The exercises here are mostly yoga poses. The only thing I don't like is "awkward chair" which I only want to do once in a workout. Doing it more than once sure teaches patience. While Jennifer pushes you to your limit, she never encourages you to go past your limit. More swan dives and breathing exercises, warrior poses, forward bends, ballet positions and the really fun side series (Pilates kicks, etc. This gives you a chance to lay on the floor which is a wonderful moment at this point). Then you do more breathing exercises and stretch out your hips. This all feels so good and healing.

Workout 3 - Flow and Flexibility: Jennifer explains that stretching can be boring and she is going to make it creative and trick you into thinking you are dancing. This is similar to the idea in "Perfect Mix" and has a similar energy, but you are not using weights. It is really difficult to sit here and type this because I'd rather be doing the exercises. lol So, while I did this workout a few days ago, I think I'll go for it again tonight. The stretching looks so "delicious," as Jennifer would say. You will reach new levels of flexibility if you have also warmed the body in the first two workouts. You can really do all three.

I'm not sure why these Pilates Method workouts end so abruptly when they start so smoothly. All of a sudden, Jennifer disappears. I would have enjoyed a "yoga-style" relaxations segment at the end of all of her workouts. Trust me, you deserve it.

If you have been working out for a number of years, you could use all three workouts for a 60 minute full-body strengthen, tone and stretch escape. I say escape because you won't be able to think of anything but this workout and your body. You have to focus to attain the level of precision Jennifer demonstrates.

If you have the choice between a Video and a DVD, go for the DVD. Isn't rewinding a video the bane of the workout existence? It is so eternally slow.

While "Precision Pilates" seems more like "Precision Yoga," I really enjoyed this video. If you want a more challenging Pilates-based workout, get "PERFECT MIX." It is intense and will take you to your limit.

This is now one of my favorite Pilates Workouts because it has so many unique poses and exercises. Make this year you reach your fitness goals, get as many Jennifer Kries workouts as you can find.

Her "Perfect Mix" workout is a true test of endurance, patience and flexibility. Once you can do that entire workout with perfection, you are on your way to looking and feeling better than you did last year. Exercise is one of those challenging aspects of life, but the results (no matter how long they take to appear) can be very satisfying when you see them appearing. I'm not exactly "skinny," but I intend to reach a new level of fitness in 2004. I'm going to review my way to fitness. Now there is motivation!

This workout is for Beginner to Intermediate, but you can take the positions to the advanced level over time.

Another workout to love!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love It - But It Isn't Pilates
I agree with the others who have noted that the title of the video is misleading. Almost nothing on the tape resembles the core Pilates mat exercises. Still, this is a workout that I return to again and again. I combine the lower body segment or the flexibility segment with a short Pilates abs routine on Kries' Target Specifics video and find that to be a great overall workout. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A true Pilates workout that moves FAST
Pilates for Everyday/Basic Intermediate is a classic Pilates mat workout perfect for those at an intermediate level. This is definitely NOT a good video for beginners, as there is NO instruction provided prior to each move.Instead, Melinda immediately begins the workout, simply announcing the name of the exercise (through voiceover instruction) and then moving right into it.She does provide tips on form as you go through the repetitions, but in order to keep up, you MUST already be familiar with Pilates and have had some prior experience practicing this method.Melinda sticks to the traditional Pilates matwork sequencing, and she performs the workout as Joseph Pilates himself did, flowing very quickly from one move into the next.Although she modifies the exercises slightly at times (for example, a modified version of swan dive), Melinda does not suggest any modifications for different levels.

On the one hand, I liked the fast-moving pace of this workout, as I definitely felt energized afterward; I also liked the fact that I could complete the entire workout in only 18 minutes. On the other hand, I felt that Melinda moved just a bit TOO quickly at times, as there often wasn't quite enough time to adequately set up for the next movement. However, this is definitely a very good workout for veteran Pilates practioners who are looking to advance their practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars No fooling around here!
If you are serious about getting in shape and really want a work out video program that you wont get board with after the first time you use it, this is it. I know I sound as if I am on Melinda's marketing team but I am not. I am just a believer in her Pilates programs. There is no sleeping allowed when Melinda is teaching Pilates. I did my research and she has studied with only first generation Pilates grand Master teachers such as Romana Kryzanowska. If you know the history of Pilates you will know that Romana Kryzanowska was the person that Joe Pilates willed the method to when he died. Melinda was one of the first to offer a Pilates Teacher Certification program teaching Traditional Pilates. She is one of the two people who use to own the trademark on the word "PILATES" up until 2001/2002. I have found that Pilates based teachers are too slow and never really get you anywhere. Melinda does not joke around. From start to finish in her videos you move. This is what real Pilates is all about. Less than 20 minutes with Melinda is as effective as a 60 minutes workout. The bottom line story about Melinda is she is the Pilates teacher of the teachers and then add her physical therapy degree to it and you end up with one of the best Pilates Master teacher available. I recommend the Melinda's entire "Pilates For Everyday" series. And if you get pregnant get her Pilates For Pregnancy and Pilates after Pregnancy videos. This is how I heard of Melinda. My doctor useses Melinda's programs and highly recommends her videos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the leader I!!!
Great energy, great tempo, great program and great fun!I love Melinda and I love her videos.Although I have not had the opportunity to be thought by Melinda, (normally she is kept busy by celebrities too big to be named) I have been an on and off client at one of Melinda's centers in West Hollywood since 1992.Melinda has been healing, teaching, training, and certifyiny other teachers since way before people could even pronounce the word Pilates. She was actually one of the two people who held the trademark on the word "Pilates" up until about 2 or 3 years ago.

I travel a lot since I am a buyer for Nordstrom and have been pleading and begging for her to put out some Pilates videos so I could do Pilates on the road.I am 41 and had my second Pilates daughter, which was made easier than my first due to Melinda's program.I just started the After Pregnancy program and I look and feel younger, stronger, and sexier than ever.My husband hates to go to gyms and fitness centers so I got him Melinda's "Pilates For Everyday" program and it has replaced his TV channel flipping, and I can see his beer belly slipping away.He does the video program 20 minutes per day, 3 day per week.It is good to be a mother again at 41, and I can honestly say that without her videos I would not be smiling so happily right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, and love it!
I had given up on Pilates since I have tried just about all the other Pilates videos out there over the years at least once, and no one else did it for me.I am 5 months pregnant now and recently started Melinda's Pilates for Pregnancy program.I wish I had it at the beginning of my pregnancy, but at the same time glad that I found it in time.I can not do all of the exercises since I am so far along but I can do most of the modified ones, in fact I find them quite comfortable and relaxing especially since I am becoming less mobile as I get closer to the big day.I intend to utilize the video after pregnancy and then progress to Melinda's Pilates After Pregnancy video and eventually begin her Pilates For Everyday series.Thank you Ms. Bryan you have made my pregnancy easier to control.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's a good pain though
Ever wake up the morning after a workout and you feel it all over? Not usually. I generally feel it in one place or another but not in every single muscle group in my body. Well, this DVD was an exception. I ache in places I didn't know I had muscles - and it's a GOOD ache. A feeling of accomplishment! The great thing about this program is the variety of exercises. These ladies somehow manage to give you an effective workout without making you do countless masochistic reps of the same exercise. Come on! Just 50 more! You can do it! Yeah, right... You are constantly switching positions and for almost every exercise there is a moderate version you can do that allows you to still benefit without hurting yourself or looking really silly trying to do something too advanced. This is one I will definitely stick with.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this DVD
I have not been able to find an exercise DVD that made me want to do it again, until now. I absolutely LOVE this DVD.
As a beginner, I know that I will be able to use this DVD for some time to come. The reason I know this is because the two instructors give you a modified stance and an advanced stance. I am still on the modified stance (for some, not all), which means I will advance with this DVD.
I am very pleased with the soreness I feel because I KNOW that I was working out. I would strongly recommend this DVD to ANYONE interested in Pilates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I am an avid at-home workout fiend. I think this video does exactly what it claims to--sculpts!!!!! Note: You will need hand weights with this DVD. Also, it is not just pilates. It starts with a lot of leg exercises(lunges) and it will really sculpt your entire body... abs, arms, shoulders, legs!!! A great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercises to strengthen the body & tone the muscles

5-0 out of 5 stars I can wear short SHORTS now! YAAAAY!!!
First let me say that this is not a video for absolute beginners. Secondly, let me also tell you that this tape must be used in conjunction w/ a Resist-A-Ring & a Yoga Mat. That said, I must tell you a little before & after story. My thighs that once resembeled a lumpy mass of undercooked oatmeal is now sinewy, long & rock hard. My buttocks which looked like a sack of dead rats are now perky, tight & smooth. Karen has you do moves that have to be seen to be believed. She has you do endless repetitions of Resist-A-Ring thigh excercises that will make you almost wanna scream at the TV. Then, if that weren't enough, Karen has you do these lying, open legged inner thigh moves that is so intense that by now, you wanna start throwing things at the TV. All this & for what? Well, the payoff is immense. My legs, butt, thighs(especially thighs) & abs are solid & lean. My whole body is lithe & I have more energy PLUS I'm more relaxed & focused. With videos like this, who needs to go to a gym? Surely not me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inner thigh workout
I was convinced to buy this tape from the oatmeal/dead rats review. Total body? I found it to be little more than an inner thigh workout. The upper body work only consisted of some situps in the beginning and a dozen or so pushups at the end. The butt exercises are ridiculously easy. I should say that I am in good shape (casual triathlete), but we all need to lose a couple pounds and a lot of cellulite. This video just isn't going to do it. I don't understand the great reviews. I do this video when I feel like having a light exercise session.

Let me throw in a plug for Denise Austin's "Hit the Spot" videos for arms, abs, and buns (three different tapes). These still challenge me after months and months of doing them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Title promises more than it should
If this tape had been called Total LOWER Body Training Pilates I would have happily given it five stars. It works the legs and abs completely and mercilessly and as long as you don't push yourself to match the vast repetions of Karen and her lithe assistant too quickly, you'll get a powerful, safe workout--though I don't think she's quite as smooth giving form tips and cueing in this video as she usually is. It's a good tape to grow with. However, it was a dissappointment to find NO upper body work using the ring! Karen does a few traditional pushups and thats all the arms get. I'm glad I have the Stott pilates "Fitness Circle" tape where Moira Stott does her versions of resistance ring exercises, upper and lower body, even though it's one of her earlier videos and I think it feels a bit rushed. I don't regret purchasing Karen's new tape, but I would have loved to see the whole body addressed as promised.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Pilates inspiration, but still not Pilates
If you're someone who would like to learn how to perform the Pilates mat movements, this is not the tape you want to start with. It struck me as I did this tape for the third time that while Voight is one of the most precise exercise instructors I've ever seen on video, she is not a great Pilates instructor. I'm not sure whether that's a big deal or not- on the one hand, she does say on the back cover that this is for people who don't have time to do Pilates, yoga or ballet in their pure form. On the other hand, she does call this "Pilates- Total Body Training".

If we take it as a workout that's "Pilates-inspired", it's pretty good. Her instructions are very precise, and it's easy to follow along (even if what she's asking you to do isn't easy).

However, "Total Body" it's not. 24 pushups and one set of planks do not an upper body workout make, and while we do work the abs through some variations on crunches and the Pilates Corkscrew, I wouldn't use this as an abdominal workout. The focus is clearly on the lower body.

I'm in the minority, but I am not very concerned with my inner thighs. Therefore, the fact that the majority of the exercises that were performed here focused on the inner thighs annoyed me after a while. However, if this is your "problem area", you'll love this tape. I was hoping that the work for the buttocks would be just as intense. Though she does include some targeted exercises for the glutes, it wasn't nearly as much as it was for the inner thighs. The inner thighs are a tiny group of muscles compared to the buttocks; I would have thought a balanced workout would have been designed the other way around.

Again, if the pet peeve of your body is your inner thighs, this will be a great tape for you. Overall, it's a good tape, just not the same "great" I've come to expect from Voight. If you want to balance the workout for your lower body, cross-train with the Lotte Berk Method Muscle Eats Fat and High Round Assets.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best thigh workouts you will ever find!
First of all, I want to note that although this video is currently being marketed as "Pilates" (it was originally called "Body Reform"), it is definitely NOT a Pilates workout--at most, there are some Pilates-inspired moves. Secondly, although the video is called "Total Body Training," despite some minimal abdominal and chest work, the workout mainly focuses on the lower body and specifically the inner thighs. Finally, the resist-a-ring is definitely necessary to the workout; although it is not used for every exercise, when it is used, it is vital for make the movements more focused and TOUGH.

All that being said, this is a challenging workout for the lower body. It begins with a brief warmup to lengthen and stretch the muscles and then moves on to some beginning inner thigh moves combined with concentrated abs work. Although the latter consists mainly of traditional crunches, the resist-a-ring is incorporated to make the moves more unique and more targeted.

The next section comprises the heart of the workout and mainly targets the thighs. The exercises are are done lying on the side and using the resist-a-ring to specifically focus on the inner thighs. The moves are small but tough, with a high number of repetitions at an increasingly quickened pace. Following the thigh work, it's onto the hands and knees (without the ring) for some tough buttocks moves, and then the entire thigh-buttocks sequence is repeated on the other side. Then, just when you think you can't take any more, there are several sets of pushups plus some plank moves for the abs. Finally, the workout ends with a brief stretching segment.

At 50 minutes, this workout is a definite challenge to your strength and endurance. Instructor Karen Voight is extremely encouraging, constantly reminding you that the workout is difficult but worth the results and saying things like "hang in there with us for just two more." Karen's form is impeccable, and she provides flawless cuing to match her excellent instruction. I know that I will continue to challenge myself with this workout and that the results WILL be worth it. ... Read more

Pilates is one of the hottest exercise trends because it strengthens the "girdle of strength"--the core muscles of the trunk--for a lean, strong, balanced body.Pilates for Beginners is an exceptionally well-designed, 75-minute program that makes Pilates accessible to novice exercisers. Mature and skillful instructor Jillian Hessel has been teaching Pilates for 20 years. She first teaches the fundamentals with a male assistant, illustrating differences between male and female bodies in positioning and performing the exercises, and practicing movements you'll need later. Then she and two assistants present a classic Pilates mat workout, with one person modifying the exercises to make them easier, and another making them more challenging. They exercise in a peaceful, outdoor setting, using props as needed: a heavy resistance band, seat riser, and cushions. An excellent program that you can grow with, starting with the easiest modifications and progressing to the most challenging. --Joan Price ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars very informative but, annoying mat workout
Okay, Pilates is complicated, posture is very important along with breathing and holding in some body parts while extending others.

I did weights for years and was just sick of them. I went to a Pilates studio just to check it out. I signed up for private sessions for 4 months, it was fantastic but, very expensive. I was forced to stop most exercises for 3 months after an injury. So, when I put this DVD on it was like starting over. But, I thought it would all come back to me. And, it did sort of.

Even though I think this DVD is informative I found the instructor a bit annoying as I hated every level quickly blurted out for each exercise. After being in a Pilates studio with private instructors I discovered there are very small movements to concentrate on and form is everything so, with 3 levels being done at once I found it very distracting.

I don't think this is a good way to start out again. Or start out at all. I am now looking for DVD's that show each level of instruction separately. Believe me, paying for 3 great videos is better than one video with everything crammed into one. I bought this DVD because it said , "Pilates for BEGINNERS" if it's for beginnners then why did someone decide to have the instructor blurt out levels 1, 2, 3 for each exercise at the same time? -( ANNOYING.

Pilates is much more complicated than weights and if you want to do it right it's a big commitment, which I don't mind making. There are so many things to remember and then forget ..to feel like a private instructor is in your living room I think a slightly slower pace with better visual and verbal queues would be much more useful and informative and effective.

Bottom line is that mat workout felt like a bad, 3 way phone conversation.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was great!!
I am surprised at the other reviews, as I thought this DVD was great! It was the first one that I tried, and maybe That was why I enjoyed the in depth instruction. I thought it was great that there were 3 different levels included, and I thought that jillian hessler was a triffic instructor. The props used really do help to isolate the proper muscles and since buying them I have enjoyed my workouts even more. This DVD has even prompted me to buy more of the Gaiam series! I love the outdoor locations and soothing music ( I think that that is why they are not smiling, they are focusing on their breathing and centering...I found it to be quite relaxing and soothing.)
I am a real beginner, and feel good in the fact that I can take this one product and advance through it to the advanced level.
It gets an A+ from me!
PS- I also had no technical problems...maybe they have fixed them since the last reviewers bought theirs??

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring!
First off, Jillian does a _great_ job describing proper positioning and breathing; however, the workout section was so boring that I couln't even finish the session. They all look bored, themselves. No smiling, no apparent energy or passion for what they are doing...just stone cold faces and almost robot-like movement through the few and low-repetition exercizes.

I also don't at all like the info-mercial aspect to the Gaiam DVDs...the instructors always seem to recommend some prop to aid in doing some move rather than describing what muscle groups are supposed to be used to help control the motion naturally.

This DVD is dull and uninspiring

1-0 out of 5 stars Pilates for Beginners ~ Jillian Hessel
I wish I had not bought this DVD. The number of exercises in the workout part of the DVD is very limited, and instruction is given too fast. The DVD keeps "Freeze Framing" during the workout. When the workout was over I was more frustrated than tired. I tried to research and select carefully when buying a DVD to get started with Pilates, but I chose poorly. Don't make the same mistake I did. I am going to try and return it for a refund.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad production
I'm a newcomer to Pilates, and I admit that the parts of the DVD I viewed, I liked. Unfortunately, the DVD production quality is so bad that about 10 minutes into the mat workout (the really important part of the disc) the DVD hangs. No problem, I thought--I just ordered another one. Believe it or not, it had exactly the same problem in the same place.

Both DVDs had small dappled spots on the surface in the same place, which I assume is what was causing the problem. There are several tracks that are completely unwatchable as a result. With quality control like this, I will never buy another Gaiam DVD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, tedious in practice
As other reviewers have noted, the instructor talks and talks and talks and its very difficult to get a workout from this tape. You spend more time sitting and listening to her than actually DOING anything! I think the tape should have been designed to walk through the series of poses with instructions once, then they should have taped it a second time with the movements flowing into one another without all the intermittent chatter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
This video might be a good introduction to fitness for someone who is very sedentary and has a low back problem. However, in my case I am very active with a low back injury and the contents of this video had nothing to add to my workout routine.

The biggest problem with the video for me was the instructor's constant, constant, constant talking. It was distracting and often added nothing to the workout. Further, though the exercise was demonstrated with explicit detail, sometimes as the set repeated the instructor talked so much I lost my place or my count.

I was hoping for a video with more body mechanics information and less breathy conversation. The model demonstrating the exercises uses excellent form. I suppose you could do this workout by turning off the sound and just following the demonstrator's lead.

I'll be mailing this one to a friend of mine who needs to get moving and quit sitting on her tailbone. This will be a perfect video for her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Back Care
I've had two kids, one by c-section. Since then my stomach muscles have been trashed, not to mention by back. (especially after spending the last 4 years picking up children) I've tried alot of things, but this tape is the first time I've had confidence something might actually work. This tape is working, but you have to have patience. At first I tried to get everything right. The breathing, the position, the exercise. Then I relaxed, got the basics down, which is the actual exercise, then the breathing in relation to the move. (The breathing is VERY important.) Everytime I watch and do the tape I learn something else (like I was breathing in, when I should have been exhaling, etc) but I don't get upset about it, I just try to do it right the next time and I can really tell the difference! And don't worry if you need to use the pillow under your neck or back or you can't raise your head to do some of the exercises, it will come once you start strengthening. The only thing I've noticed is that I sometimes have to go a little slower than the demonstration, but once you start knowing what's coming up next you can just start a little sooner. Remember mostly to inhale/exhale at the appropriate times. Pace yourself and only do what you feel comfortable with, and work on it at least three times a week, but every other day is better. This tape will definitely help you, just keep trying!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate backcare review
I have lived with fairly mild lower back pain most of my adult life. It has consisted of morning stiffness and mild discomfort after engaging in activities such as gardening. For many years, I found that a few yoga stretches and postures pretty much took care of it. But upon entering my forties, the stretches and postures, while still helpful, did not seem to have the same effect and the pain started to intrude into other activities such as skiing and biking. Since these were sacred activities - to be protected at all costs - I had to find something else but nothing seemed to be enough. About six months ago, I discovered some pilates exercises in a magazine. Finally, I began to experience significant relief! I then found some pilates classes at my gym and it became clear to me that I needed to do this on a more regular basis. I bought the Living Arts Pilates tape and worked up to the Intermediate Mat Workout doing it several times a week. I not only received considerable relief from back pain but felt all over better and not to be dismissed, experienced a flatter abdomen. I felt better (younger) doing the activies I love such as biking. I started looking at amazon.com for other pilates tapes. I felt that a change in tapes might be interesting plus I felt like the Living Arts tapes really did not focus on technique. When I saw the Stotts Ultimate Backcare, it seemed like a natural choice. I also bought Stotts Essential Mat Workout at the same time. I was hopeful that the Ultimate Backcare would concentrate on the place I needed the most help and would offer modifications to some basic pilates exercises that might be more appropriate to someone with a "bad back". (I found modifications nearly non-existant in Ana Cabin's Living Arts Pilates tape). The Ultimate Backcare tape brings to it Moira Stott-Merrithew's intelligent approach to exercise and her considerable experience. It provides a good introduction to basic pilates principles with her usual extensive focus on breathing and form. (I have discovered breathing and form to be very important in the achievement of maximal results). Moira has a student demonstrate the exercises while she explains and emphasizes the important points. She clearly shows the correct and incorrect forms. The tape begins with the introduction (you can skip this after one to two viewings), and proceeds to a gentle warm-up, a very basic set of pilates exercises with modifications and finishes with a couple of stretches. It runs about 45 minutes. She offers warnings, when necessary, before starting an exercise to those with disc problems, etc and offers further modifications. I am glad that I purchased the Essential Mat Workout for Beginners at the same time as I much prefer it. I find the Essential Mat Workout a little more challenging and I definitely can see the results in stronger "core muscles" which is the heart of pilates practice. But I think for those with recent back injuries or back problems that have made them reluctant to exercise, Utimate Backcare is perfect. Her methods seem very safe and sound. I think that these individuals will find it very helpful in relieving back pain and creating the stronger core muscles to support a more active lifestyle. But don't be afraid to move up to the Essential Workout tape for Beginners when you have gotten very comfortable with this one. You can still use the modifications when necessary and may experience greater results. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice Pilates routine with a wide range of appeal
Given that I have been practicing Pilates for several years now, I thought this video might be too easy for me, but I decided to give it a shot. What I found is that this is a nice, 31 minute Pilates routine which is likely to appeal to a wide range of Pilates students. The workout is led by Annika Carlson, whose gung-ho enthusiasm reminded me of another famous Pilates instructor, Mari Winsor.Annika is assisted by Jamie, who shows modifications of the exercises with the help of a chair, pillow, and towel.

Annika begins the workout with a 3-minute standing warmup (squats, pelvic tucks, neck turns, and arm swings) before moving to the floor to begin an 18-minute segment of Pilates matwork. She starts with the classic Pilates hundred and moves on to many of the traditional exercises of the Pilates matwork series, including some from the stomach series (which she calls "belly busters").She also includes the side kick series performed from a kneeling position, which might be a bit challenging to those who do not yet have much core strength.

Following the matwork, Annika returns to a standing position for an additional 7 minutes of standing Pilates movements.I recognized many of these exercises from the Pilates standing arm series, and next time, I will try doing this section with light hand weights. This segment ends with three short sets of Pilates push-ups before moving into a 3-minute stretch to finish.

Overall, I really liked this program. There is enough explanation and modifications for those new to Pilates, yet the workout flows smoothly enough that those more advanced like myself will still get a good workout. This video would be ideal for someone who wants to try a full range of Pilates exercises (ie, not just the matwork).Although prior Pilates experience is not necessary, because some of the moves are challenging (even with the modifications), I think this practice would be best suited to those who already exercise regularly but who want to add Pilates into their routine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great everyday workout
I bought this video on the advice of others on Amazon, and I must say I have been very pleased. This is a great everyday workout, with a nice mix of exercises to leave you stimulated. All parts of the body are worked.I have tried some other Pilates videos as well, and I think this is the best.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent video, but too short for the price
This is a 26 minute Pilates mat workout. Good for travel because you don't need much room or any equipment (other than a VCR), but at $20, I don't see it as a value, really. Also, any seasoned instructor should realize that it is much easier for us to follow her if we mirror her movements. Noelle tell us what side she is using, not the side that most (if not all) will use when watching her on our televisions. Not important, just a pet peeve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Effective and User Friendly Pilates!
I had the opportunity to view Noelle's Powerhouse complete series(3 videos) recently, and it is the best Pilates workout on video I have seen so far.The Complete Mat Workout is less than 30 minutes but so effective and easy to follow even if you've never done Pilates. The Focus on Abs video is only 15 minutes. Then, for those times when you have no time there's the quick 12 minute workout - short cuts that also work beautifully.Noelle guides and inspires with just the right amount of enthusiasm. This is the next best thing to having a private lesson with a Pilates instructor. So buy The Complete Mat Workout or buy the whole series. You will not regret it.

PS:You do not need a Pilates machine to get great results! All you need is an exercise mat and an excellent video.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should try this tape!
I have done some Yoga in the past, but was looking for something that was a bit more challenging.Noelle's Powerhouse Pilates workout is definitely that!I love her cheerful, encouraging style and feel that her comments about some of the moves are entirely appropriate. I was a bit leery that she would lean toward the new-agey kind of talk and thankfully she does not. Her cheerful tone keeps me motivated to push on, and the instructions on each position are very clear and concise. This is one of the few tapes I didn't have to rewind to see a position repeated before I could do it. The workout is tough but fun.(Yes, I said fun!) I've noticed quite a different already in my muscle tone and strength since doing this terrific 26-minute workout just twice a week. I'd do it everyday if I had time, which is amazing because this is *exercise*!

4-0 out of 5 stars Workout - good, instructor a bit annoying, though
I've tried three pilates tapes and this one is BY FAR the best. The other two ones i've tried were 'pilates-lite' to the point that you couldn't tell if you were doing *anything* to your body. This, by contrast, is a quick tape (30 min) but an effective pilates workout. Some of the movies are too basic for a pilates advanced beginner or intermediate, but if you've taken a few classes you can substitute the harder variation pretty easily. My only complaint about this tape is i don't really care for Noelle. I do pilates once a week in a pilates studio where focus is on form, agility, and grace. Noelle, by contrast, keeps peppering her workout with comments like 'feel your buns shaping up!' and 'streamline your bodies, ladies!' as if it were an aerobics classing. This was very off-putting to me. I think next time i do the tape i'm going to proceed with the sound off. ... Read more

This 90-minute Pilates-based workout, based on the book Body Control: The Pilates Way, strengthens muscles while improving posture and flexibility, "building strength from within." Lynne Robinson is a mature instructor whose instructions are clear and visual: "Imagine that from your knee to your hip joint is a wooden spoon, and your hip is a bowl of porridge, and you're stirring the spoon in the porridge." This is a thorough and clear introduction to Pilates, though you won't master it in a hurry.

Section 1, a 10-minute introduction to body alignment, shows you how to do the key postural positions with correct technique before you start the workout. Section 2 (25 minutes) is your "daily warm-up," designed to stretch and strengthen the whole body, starting with breathing and alignment techniques and advancing into slow, controlled movements that target the core muscles and work various body parts independently, all done lying down. Props needed include a scarf, pillow, and tennis ball.

In Section 3 (45 minutes), you work various muscles in isolation from a standing, lying-down, or sitting position. The exercises look deceptively simple--such as twisting at the waist while holding a pole on your shoulders or doing the familiar curl-up--but the alignment challenges for doing each movement correctly are considerable. Section 4 is a cool-down and relaxation. --Joan Price ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too confusing for the rank beginner
I didn't get very far with this.Ms. Robinson begins with an inspiring talk about what pilates can do for you and then lies prone on a mat talking about what she's doing with her muscles. I couldn't follow the explanation.I admit that my abs are ridiculously weak and I am not knisthetically gifted. Those with some previous exposure to pilates may benefit from this video, but it's really confusing for an out-of-shape beginner.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is probably better than I've rated it, BUT...
I think I needed to start with something a bit easier as my "core" has been asleep for many years. I am borrowing my in-laws copy of Stephanie Power's Silver Foxes Pilates tape, which I understand is great for those who need to start at a lower level of Pilates movements. I liked what I saw, I just couldn't do the movements. Ms. Robinson's books are GREAT for explaining the theory and background of Pilates, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction
I felt this was an excellent introduction to Pilates. It does seem slow moving but it gets the job done as far as the results.I also have Living Arts Beginners Mat workout. It's fast paced compared to this but I didn't feel I got as good or as deep a workout as with Lynne Robinson's video.I have over 30 years dance background and 19 years yoga and I have just got interested in Pilates and I'm more impressed with this video than the Living Arts one.The neck in the LA one is in an unnatural position most of the time and is strained.I felt Lynne's instructions were gentle but effective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory video
I have been reading about the Pilates method for a long time but since we do not have Pilates classes in my part of the world, I wasn't able to learn more. I bought this video hoping to get introduced to the method. And I must say that I am very happy with my purchase. The instructions are very clear and the tape provides ample time for the viewer to master each movement. Since I have not seen a live Pilates class, I cannot say whether this is a good introduction to the Pilates method but whatever it is it works great. After a few sessions, I really started feeling the effects, I felt longer and more flexible. And what's more, a few days ago I went to a physical therapist for a back problem and the exercises she recommended were all parts of the method introduced in this video. The only thing that made me give 4 stars is that it is a bit long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Video!
I have been taking Pilates classes and this video is great!I have tried many Pilates videos and this is one of the only ones that really tries to teach you about breathing during the exercises.Breathing is such an essential part of doing Pilates. If you can't find a Pilates class in your area, start with this video.Yes, it is long, however, the instruction is excellent, detailed and thorough which is very important as Pilates is much better learned with live instruction and not video. ...
