Amazon.com Workout 2 includes both Pilates-based exercises and yoga postures, starting with the Sun Salutation and progressing to a variety of yoga poses that emphasize balance and flexibility and Pilates-based exercises that focus on core stability and strength. This is a softer Denise--quiet voice, subdued pace, tranquil feeling--a nice change from the frenetic pace and unrelenting chatter of many of Austin's videos. You'll be surprised by how demanding this workout is, because of the core stability and balance challenges. --Joan Price Reviews (136)
I would not recommend using this dvd as a means for transforming your whole body. It's not that tough unless you're a beginner, and after that there's no way to make it more challenging. I found that I was no longer challenged after only about a dozen times using the dvd. What good is a workout tape if it's not going to stand the test of time? Because of this, I use it more as a second workout of the day or on those days where I barely exercise at all, either out of laziness or time restrictions, as it is pretty quick. If you have realistic expectations, this can be a nice addition to your collection, as it has been to mine, but I would not recommend this dvd as part of a bigger, serious pilates agenda.
I would not recommend, however, doing the second workout if you don't know some basic yoga principles, but its great if you do. The only real problem I do have w/ the video is that she does tell you when she changes sides. Other than that GREAT VIDEO!!!
I found this workout to be totally effective and worth every penny, but here is a WARNING: I would NOT recommend this workout for beginners. You would need to be at least intermediate in Yoga, or another kind of flexible exercise. If you think you're pretty flexible, this workout might work for you. But I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wasn't used to working out.

What a pleasant surprise! I use this video regularly and definitely feel and see the results. Michelle Dozios clearly explains and demonstrates every move but is never condescending, irritating or intrusive. She also shows modifications for beginners and advanced exercisers, plus demonstrations of what NOT to do. I'm not a Pilates expert, but I've seen some of these positions before on other Pilates videos, so I'm guessing they're pretty standard. You'll really feel it in your abs. (I think that overall, Pilates is much more effective -- and interesting -- than crunches for toning abs. I know I see a big difference when I do this video regularly.) This is purely Pilates. There's no cardio, no weights. I like to alternate this video with cardio and weight work; additionally, you can skip the ab section on your other videos and use this instead. This is a great intro to Pilates, and you sure can't beat the price. I highly recommend it.

What this DVD is is a solid introduction to the beginning and intermediate levels of Pilates. There is an introduction about 10 minutes long that explains the significance of and the proper position for the powerhouse and spinal alignment. The instructor, Michelle, takes the time to teach the proper method of breathing during the exercises. After the introduction, there are two groups of exercises at the beginning and intermediate levels. The beginning group of exercises has 18 basic Pilates exercises. It looks like the intermediate group has about the same number. The strength of this DVD is that each exercise is demonstrated in a detailed fashion along with easier and more challenging variations. You should have little ambiguity performing the exercise correctly after listening to the explanation and seeing the exercise performed. In addition, common problems encountered performing each exercise are shown in an exaggerated fashion, so you clearly understand what not to do. I had read two highly recommended books on Pilates, but seeing the DVD really put it all together for me. After using the DVD 3 times this week, I am feeling muscles I haven't felt in years and have developed a sense of when I am not standing properly or slumped over at the desk. I did have a low grade lower backache for a couple of days (which is somewhat normal according to the books) but that has passed. I recently also joined a health club where they offer free Pilates Mat workouts. After watching one session and working out one session at the health club, it clear how much better the instructor on the DVD is. Finally, for me, this workout would not work on VHS format. I really enjoy the ability to step through the exercises rather than FFW or REV.

Amazon.com Certified Pilates instructor Ana Caban is a splendid teacher. First she demonstrates alignment and technique for 10 minutes, explaining the cue words you will hear and how to do the basics, emphasizing how to use the core muscles to strengthen the abdominals and back throughout the workout. Then she introduces a challenging 20-minute series of Pilates moves, instructing clearly, demonstrating beautifully, and continuing to advise you about technique, breathing, and form. Even though this is a beginning Pilates workout, Pilates is never easy, so these moves will feel extremely difficult if you're new to this kind of exercise. For example, you learn to hold your abs tight whatever move you're doing, and you move only the muscles you're working at the moment, using your stabilizing muscles to hold the rest of the body still (much harder than it sounds!). Another participant demonstrates modifications throughout in case Caban's moves are too difficult or your muscles fatigue. If you've been wanting to explore Pilates and you're willing to put in the effort and concentration, this video gets our top rating. --Joan Price Reviews (194)
I've since moved onto the Intermediate workout and I agree with the poster who said this one is a lot harder. Be warned! Make sure you can do EVERY stretch before moving on. I made the mistake of moving onto the intermediate workout before I'd mastered the open leg rocker and teaser. I kind of thought I would be doing different stretches than the ones in the beginner workout. Wrong! Not knowing how to do those specific stretches made the 2nd video a lot harder than it should have been. 3 months after starting it I'm finally getting to the point where I can do the stretches without to much difficulty. I'm giving myself another few months before moving onto the advanced workout just to be safe.
Maybe that's because a lot of days I don't have time to make it to the gym but I want to do some kind of exercise. At 20 minutes, the workout on this video is a very convenient length for those days. I can fit it in almost anytime, but I definitely finish it feeling like I've gotten a workout. This video can be the difference between feeling lazy and flabby and feeling alert and motivated at the end of the day. Ana Caban's instructions are clear and complete, and while her delivery of the introductory "this is great and you'll love it" section is a little annoying, during the exercises themselves she's not at all grating. Compared to most exercise-video instructors she's appealingly low-key.

The Ana Caban videos do not go overly into detail on form, which is a drawback at first. It can be remedied by getting Brooke Siler's book and/or getting a few pointers from a Pilates trainer as I did. (Not a bad idea anyway, even for advanced users. I've heard that people sometimes come into studios having done Pilates for years thinking it was "easy"- and all along they'd gotten the form wrong so they were cheating!) In the end, once you've gotten the forms down, you want a video like this- one that will give you a solid workout with a minimum of fuss.

So, if you are a total beginner to Pilates, I would recommend Anna Caban's Mat Based Workout for Beginners over this tape. If you've had a little experience with Pilates or you're in decent (not necessarily great) shape and want a more intense workout, Precision Toning is probably for you.

My dissapointment was immediately apparent. The music? What happened to the music? In previous workouts the music is at a higher volume than Kristin McGee's voice and in this workout the music is barely apparent. You also have to endure advertising at the beginning of the workout. I wanted to get right to working out and prefer the advertising to be at the end of the workout so I don't have to watch it each and every time. (Yes, forwarding is an option.) The setting is the same as MTV Power Yoga: The beautiful mountains of Arizona. The mats are blue with a lavender center. All the colors seem to be either blue, lavender or burnt orange and mustard yellow. This creates a very natural setting against the mountains and slate/stone rooftop type garden. I love the outdoor setting. I love the instruction - Kristin's instruction is precise and she leads you through all the main Pilates exercises. MUSIC: I can't really hear the music unless I increase the volume to an irritating level. The music is not that inspiring (seems to loop a lot and it sounds like a broken record a lot of the time...arrggggg) and I hope they remake this with a different soundtrack. I'd absolutely not recommend the video because at least with the DVD you can use your own music and have the option of not being irritated by the music. Normally I'd give MTV workouts 5 stars but this one really doesn't deserve it because of the music. Apologies to Kristin who is an excellent instructor and who deserves a much more inspiring soundtrack. Common MTV - Give her a better soundtrack. Kristin's Instruction: 5 Stars The music should be louder than Kristin's voice, end of story. ~TheRebeccaReview.com

As other reviewers have mentioned, the workout is quick and seems hurried (especially at the end of the thighs segment). However, I find that when I'm pressed for time, popping in the tape is an easy way to get a short workout in. I did not find it to be difficult. If you are a beginner and unused to ballet, it might take awhile to get the routine down, but once you know what is coming you will be able to focus more on the moves and see quick improvement. Some reviewers mentioned that the music was distracting and this is a valid criticism. However, you can use this to build your concentration skills. When doing the movements, you should always be concentrating on your body and your own process. By focusing inward, your workout (though short) will be greatly enhanced. In summary, though the tape has its faults, in the end it is a good toning routine. I would definitely recommend it. ... Read more

This video is well worth the money to me because it teaches appropriate breathing and the correct form, which are essential to proper results and to prevent injury. It is challenging and fun, and has produced great results in my overall balance, strenth, tone and provides me with a feeling of well-being once I am done with the workout. You don't need a mat if you have carpet. I also combine this with other workouts such as cardio and light weights, and she encourages you to alternate the tape with something for your heart such as walking, although this is a good cardio workout, for your heart's health you need something to push you a bit harder a couple times a week. A great combination and wonderful variety to any workout regimen. I love not having to dress up with shoes, just plop on the floor and get started, and it's easy to do if I have a injury or am just too tired to do something else. It has been beneficial for me, having a lot of physical pain and muscle problems, although I will say it was very challenging at first but in a good way. As your core muscles improve with time, it becomes easier and you can feel it working better in my opinion. It's fun to improve at things, and if you want to have a tape that you can grow with, see results, and feel good about what you are doing for yourself, this is a good one.
Great supplement to studio sessions. I work the reformer at the studio weekly, and this video (and others from Stott) at home twice a week. Great for improving posture.
Stott's instruction and execution of the exercises is excellent; no cheating or sloppiness. However, it was less challenging for me overall than Caban's intermediate video, despite being about 10 minutes longer. What really turned me off this video and kept if from inspiring me, is that it appeared, between moves during instructional "chats," Stott sat hunched over. Admittedly, this is a pet peeve, but ever since Pilates has helped me improve my posture and lessened my aching back, I have become much more aware of hunching. Seeing my instructor hunching was outright depressing, so I gave the video away after a few viewings. Caban's video was good, and Hillary Burnett's best of the Pilates videos I've seen. But Stott's Pilates is otherwise well instructed and executed. ... Read more

The Pilates section is good, but I still prefer the Dummies workout in some ways. I think the Pilates portion could be longer. I practiced ballet for about 20 years and also have modern dance experience, so I especially like the ballet portion of the workout. Michelle has incredible form and really looks like a trained dancer. I really feel the work in my calves and thighs. I am not a fan of yoga as I have found it very stressful on my joints, but I mostly enjoy the yoga portion. It is a good way to end the workout since it stretches a lot of your major muscles well. I wish they had made the Pilates section longer and the yoga section shorter--but that may just be me! Pluses: Great overall body workout; lots of variety; Michelle is an excellent instructor and Tracy is OK; definitely a workout with "room to grow" Minuses: Hard to do workout and watch the DVD at the same time; a bit hard to do ballet portion on carpet Recommended with four stars
Section 1: Michelle Dozios leads this stretching segment, which consists mainly of yoga-type stretches, including some sun salutation variations. About 8 minutes. Section 2: Tracy York begins this segment, which focuses on Pilates. The exercises performed here clearly are rooted in Pilates, yet they are modified from traditional Pilates matwork. Some of moves are deceptively simple (e.g., leaning back to engage your abs and then punching to each side), but I could really feel the work in my abdominal area. Following the lying abs work, you roll onto your side for some additional unique abs moves as well as Pilates side kick type moves. A really challenging series containing plank moves combined with push-ups comes next; you will also do "decellerated push-ups," a slower moving tricep pushup. Michelle takes over to repeat the exercises on the other side as well as to do a second pushup series. At 17 minutes, this is the longest section of the workout. Section 4: This was the yoga segment, and it consisted of about 8 minutes of standing yoga poses, including warrior, side angle, chair, and standing forward bends. Tracy leds this section, and she provides good instructions on alignment. The workout ends rather abruptly with a very brief stretch at the end of this segment. I really enjoyed this workout; the wide variety combined with the segmented format to hold my interest, and because of this, I know that I won't easily tire of this video. Michelle and Tracy were both good instructors who provided good cuing, and for many of the exercises, one of them shows a modified version. They occasionally chatted back and forth, but not to the point of being annoying or disrupting the flow of the routine. This is a perfect workout for intermediate exercises like myself who enjoy doing a wide variety of methods in a relatively short period of time.
The variety in this workout is more versatile. In my opinion, if you've never done ballet, they make the movements easy. I enjoy the tape and will log on to their website to check out the tape that incorporates weight training.

The workout is very intense and requires both physical and mental endurance, and the instructor's demeanor is pleasant and makes you feel comfortable about being at whatever level you're at. If you're unable to perform the full exercise, she shows or explains how to modify it to suit you. I appreciate her manner in doing this, so I don't feel "less able" because I not as flexible as she is (yet!). I feel I've advanced so much from using this video regularly, and I can't wait to try the other videos in the Stott series once I feel I've mastered this one. ... Read more
