"Do you want to get toned to the bone?" shouts Richard Simmons. "Yes!" his class yells back. This half-hour video comes with a "Tonin' Cord," rubber tubing with handles, used for muscle strengthening in place of weights. First Simmons gives instruction for using the tubing correctly and effectively. Then he warms up his class, who happen to be instructors from his exercise studio, Slimmons. (It's great to see fit instructors that aren't all slender.) The toning class uses the tubing to create resistance to work the legs, chest, arms, shoulders, and back. The exercises are varied and effective (sometimes enabling you to work two muscle groups at once), and the tubing gives enough resistance to make the workout challenging. This is a different style than the Sweatin' to the Oldies series--no live band or oldies music, a small class of instructors, more instruction of technique, and much better cueing. Richard shines as an instructor here. The class ends with a set for the abdominals (without the tubing) and a relaxing stretch. If you want to strengthen without free weights and with a warm, motivating instructor, Richard's your man. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly tough routine
This one gives you quite a workout. Although the toning it isn't as thorough as his Uptown/Downtown tapes, this is more intense with more reps. With Richard, it's a good idea to get form pointers from other instructors (like keeping your wrists straight, taxing your muscles without over-taxing them, keeping your knees over your ankles). But when you use correct form, this workout is extremely effective. It's more serious than his other tapes, but he's as supportive as ever. If you're a beginner, you'll be surprised when you accomplish all the reps because of his encouragement. Doing this tape will help you build muscle fast!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for all fitness levels
I've been doing this tape for about 2 weeks...it gives a suprising good strength workout using the toning cords. Also, you will sweat a lot so this makes it a combination muscle building/cardio workout. Richard is encouraging and the people in the tape are of all sizes. Get it!!! I weigh 256 lbs and I can do it!

5-0 out of 5 stars great workout--you can adjust intensity/difficulty, pace
I have been exercising for years and I believe this tape provides an intense strength/toning workout. Toning cords and resistance bands seem to be all the rage right now. It's easy to see why. Both the videotape and the cords are inexpensive and you can really feel it in your muscles after you're done. Plus, you can go at your own pace and adjust the cords to increase the difficulty once you pass the beginner stage. The only thing I wish the tape had were more exercises to work the glutes. It's very thorough on upper body and has a good deal of abdominal exercises that won't bore you. The time goes by quickly while doing this workout. Great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you can't stand Simmons, you HAVE to try this one!!!
Really, I mean it. I can't stand Richard Simmons work outs. But his Tone and Sweat Video is BETTER than anything out there. It is realistic. Anyone can do it. My husband is in the Army and he wants his soldiers to do it, because he feels it is that great!!!! We do it every day, not because we have to, but because we feel so much more energy when we do. Anyone can find time for this one as it is VERY short. Only about 30 min and that is counting the time he takes to instruct you on how to use the toning cord. You can fast forward that part after you fully understand.

Best excercise video out there today!!!!!!!!! (and I do Tae Bo, so I am accustomed to more difficult excercise programs)

5-0 out of 5 stars TONING WITH FUN!
I absolutely LOVE this toning video. You get a great toning work out with the toning cord without hurting yourself! And of course it helps that Richard is sooooo much fun. I love you Richard! Thanks! ... Read more

T'ai chi, the classic Chinese exercise for health, self-defense, and spiritual growth, is "meditation in movement." It emphasizes relaxation, breath control, visual and mental concentration, and slow, balanced movement, explains the voiceover in T'ai Chi for Health: Yang Short Form during a 10-minute explication of the qualities, philosophy, and health benefits of t'ai chi. Meanwhile the instructor, Terence Dunn, practices on a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. Dunn teaches 10 minutes of breathing and warm-up exercises. Next is a 30-minute introduction to the basic postures, then a full hour of step-by-step instruction and practice of the 37 postures of the Yang Short Form. The video ends with an eight-minute demonstration of the complete Yang Short Form, showing how the postures flow together. Altogether, you get two full hours in this unusually complete training video. The beginner gets all the instruction needed to start practicing, and ongoing students get an ideal setting for practice and improvement. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The battle dance of life and flow.
The only thing lacking in this video is special effects and computer graphics. However, it starts overlooking the sea with Terrence Dunn performing the Yang Short Form. Motivational music plays and a voice narrates the philosophy of yin and yang, "The Great Terminous", Toaism, etc. Various shots of the various movements in the form are shown with the sea as backgound and symbol of the Tao. The form ends and we are shown a shot of "average" people Strumming the Lute and Lifting Hands. Then the slow grueling and flowing dance begins as Mr. Dunn leads us through the 40 odd postures in the form, detail by detail. Finally, a work of art is presented. The entire Yang short Form being presented by Mr. Dunn with a superb musical background. The beauty of this dance is enhanced and we are both informed and entertained. I loved this tape and will one year move on to the Long Form. I must also, before concluding, say that the basics of Qi Gong and the three fundamental stances of Tai Chi are dealt with in detail and are presented as warmup exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn Tai Chi From a Video? Sure!
I'm sure that there is no replacement for good one-on-one instruction from a qualified instructor. In some situations that may not be practical. If you can't get direct instruction, this video is just the ticket. I've seen several Tai Chi instructional videos and this one rates among the best. The videography is crisp and clear. Every nuance of hand and foot positioning can be seen. Terry Dunn's instructional style is very clear and easy to follow. He takes time to go through evry technique slowly enough that it can be seen and understood.

If i were trying to keep the bills paid with a Tai Chi school, I would probably join the ranks of critics who say that you can't possible learn good Tai Chi from a video, but I think you can. Certainly, if you are trained in some form of martial art, Terry Dunn's video will be a good introduction to Tai Chi.

One caution, though. Be prepared to invest a lot of time. You will not be able to learn this form in a couple of hours.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor production quality
The video is fairly useful. However, Terry Dunn frequently mixes up left and right in his oral description of what to do. This means you can never rely on what he's saying and have to keep looking at the video (which can be inconvenient for several of the positions). This compounds the problem of having to do the "opposite" of what you're looking at. The scences where he says "left" where he should have said "right" should have been redone. The more times you play the tape the more the left/right problem gets annoying!

2-0 out of 5 stars good - but think in reverse
Terry demonstrates the taichi poses and form FACING you - leaving you to add in a factor of following in the opposite direction, which is confusing if you're new to the complex poses. Terry Dunn concludes this video showing the full form in in sihouette lighting making hand movements hard to see if following his movements is important to you (which I assume it is since you paid money for a video). Perhaps, as in other similar videos, students could have been placed in the film facing instructor per the VIEWER's perspective... which would have made this video much easier to follow (I've seen an easier to follow taichi video where the instructor faced a mirror with camera view behind him. I took off 3 stars per my above comments... I would actually like this video otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard's a blast!
I popped in these tapes after not having used them for a few years, and found that they are still fun. Great cardio workout, and Richard's attitude is upbeat and infectious. The other background exercisers in the tape seemed to have a lot of fun, too. The dance steps may take a few viewings to get down, but I don't find them difficult. These tapes might make for a good warmup for an intermediate or advanced user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
Ok, I bought these against the advice of people here but I'm a Simmons Groupie and didn't have these 3. I just finished the Latin Blast Off and yes, the moves are hard but they need practice to learn. This video is fun, and fast, and the time just flies. I did the best I could with the moves but after a few times I'm sure I'll get it down. Plus, it's loaded with beautiful people with great costumes and makeup, and they are having such FUN....
If you are used to another Richard video and know his normal moves then get this. It may take awhile to get the moves down but doesn't it always? Plus, it's 40 minutes long. I always thought 1 hour was too much and 30 minutes was too short, this is perfect. The aerobic part was about a half hour and then there was a toning session with "cool weights" that you can order from Richard but they are just wrist weights you can buy at any Wal-Mart, or do without until you build your arm strenth up. Great video set.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated for the uncordinated
I bought these videos because I enjoyed the Sweatin to the Oldies series, but this was not the same at all. I put the Latin dance tape in and was so confused that I gave up in the first two minutes. I continued to watch the entire tape and felt there was no way I would ever learn all the moves and never put it back in. There was poor cueing, you would need to watch the tapes many times first in order to do a first time work out and follow along. Stick with the Sweatin' series.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Much Fun, You Actually Want to Exercise!
I disagree with the other reviewers. I found the difference between these videos and Richard's previous videos the exact reason why I love these so much. It looks like Richard hired some real dancers for the videos. Not that I have anything against overweight people (I shouldn't), but it is nice to do the exercises while watching some truly attractive people. The outfits they wear are *fun*. Some things in the Latin workout are hysterically funny, like when a woman sitting at a table in the "club" starts to gyrate and dance against Richard. The look on his face is to die for. Not only will you get fit doing these tapes, you will also laugh a lot...if you have a sense of humor.

The music includes songs by Ricky Martin, Enrique, Madonna, Cher, and others. The music on all 3 tapes is phenomenal. You can't help but feel incredibly happy exercising to this music. The cool down sessions are great. The toning segments WORK. I've gone from "I don't want to exercise" to "I can't wait" because these tapes are so much fun and you will see results! Richard uses much more effective moves in these tapes. His cueing is still terrible. But once you do them a few times, you'll have the moves down. And you'll be having so much fun doing them!

I've lost 10 lbs. and one pants size in 3 weeks with just these tapes. Thank you for making me a "mover" again, Richard! And please, make more videos like these!

3-0 out of 5 stars Shorter, more intense workouts
The workouts in these videos are shorter and more intense than Richard's normal videos, which can be a plus since I don't always have a whole hour to devote to exercise. The Aerobics last about 30 minutes then there is 10 minutes of toning. When I
bought this set is came with wrist weights, but I have stopped using those and just use small dumbbells now instead. The intensity of these videos might appeal to people who have not found his workouts challenging enough in the past, but may be too intense for his target audience, really overweight people.

There are a couple of things that I object to about these videos. They are a little harder to follow than Richard's other videos, and those of you who have tried his videos before know that he really borders on dance with some of his moves. I gave up all together trying to follow the Latin Blast Off. I also object to the way some of the women are dressed in these videos. Richard usually uses real people in real clothes in his workouts. Many of the women in these look like they are auditioning for an adult film, especially in the Latin video. All in all, though, I enjoy the challenging but shorter workouts offered by this set. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workout!!!
This is the second tape of Keli Robert's that I have purchased, the first being her Ultimate Step which is super too, and I really loved this tape! It is definitely a tough workout, I consider myself to be an advanced exerciser, and with the 8 inch step and power band toning segments I was constantly challenged and out of breath. Of course this workout is applicable to all fitness levels because of the variability with step height, power band strength, or you can use free weights in place of the power band. I ordered the power band from the insert from her tape and I think it is quite effective and challenging. I regularly lift weights, but I liked the concept of circuit training, where you alternate between cardio and strength moves, and Keli's creativity with the power band made the workout fun as well as quick. Keli gives you a great workout, along with a terrific ab and cooldown section. She also gives you this kind of complete workout in her Ultimate Step video. Her ab sections are very challenging, but you can work your way up to completing the moves. I hope that Keli puts out another video soon... I think she is terrific and her workouts are fun, motivating, and very effective! I have definitely noticed a big difference in my overall body condition, my abs, and my body tone. I stongly recommend both of her tapes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Much Better Than Keli Roberts Ultimate Step!
If you like Keli Roberts Ultimate Step, you'll love this video. Even if you don't like Keli Roberts Ultimate Step, you'll love this one, because it is 10 times better! Like Reebok Circuit Challenge, this video offers a circuit training workout that combines step aerobics with resistance training in between. The Reebok Circuit Challenge is made up of short intervals: a minute of step, a minute of resistance, and so on. It's very fast-paced as a result. Keli Roberts Real Fitness--Circuit Training Workout has longer intervals. There are three sections of step that lasts from 6-10 minutes. The first and second segments are followed by resistance training for about the same amount of time. It's therefore not as fast-paced as the Reebok video but it is still very effective and doesn't drag. Keli's cueing is perfect and I was able to follow the workout almost without a stumble the first time I tried it. The step segments use the step in a vertical position which is a great change from most other step videos. The second segment of resistance offers some of the most effective exercises for the shoulders I've used! Keli uses a stretch band for these exercises. I have dumbbells and had no problems completing all the exercises. One of the background steppers was using hand-held weights, so the elastic band is not required. Following the workout, you get about ten minutes of abdominal crunches using the step in a slanted position. I find this ab workout more effective than the one used in Keli Roberts Ultimate Step. It also does not have the silly meditative final cool down at the end that Ultimate has. Keli Roberts Real Fitness is one of the best videos I've tried. I also recommend Cherfitness: A New Attitude. Keli is the instructor of this workout and, albeit it is very long at an hour and twenty minutes, it is a very thorough and enjoyable workout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keli Roberts: Fun and Challenging Fitness!
I tried this tape last night for the first time. It was awesome. The step segments were broken up with resistance training. I used bands that I had on hand. Otherwise, there are modifications for hand held weights. The tape was challenging and interesting without any joint compromise (such as my knees). The ab section uses the bench at an angle. My bench lacks this ability so I laid flat on the floor. This was still an exceptional ab workout just the same. The tape consists of Keli with a group behind her showing the modifications. They are professional and without any of the goofy hooting and hollering that are on some fitness tapes. In my opinion this is far more interesting than her Ultimate Step which I found very monotonous (after only one workout).

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Workout!
Keli Roberts is one of my favorite instructors. And in this video, every muscle in your body is challenged to one degree or another, which to me is what's really important. Not to mention that it's so much fun! I like the way Keli is always making sure you're doing each and every move correctly. I will definitely be doing this one on a regular basis, right along with other videos that maybe put more emphasis on abs, for a complete and well-rounded workout. Good job, Keli!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent workout for intermediate/advanced levels
As a person who has been working out with exercise videos for over seven years, I have grown quite picky with the selection of tapes that are out there. So, after seeing Keli in Kathy Smith's Kickboxing Workout, I decided to give one of her videos a try. At first, I thought the choreography was a little confusing on the first two tries, but I have to say, WOW, was my heart rate up there! It has been a habit of mine to ALWAYS wear a heart rate monitor during all workouts, and this workout really kept my heart rate up there. Unlike a lot of videos out there, she starts the workout in about two minutes of the tape running, which is great 'cause you don't have to fast-forward through a long and drawn out intro. The stretches she uses are fantastic; I used to be much more limber prior to giving birth to my daughter last year. I guess to cut down on time, I have been skipping the stretches, but have added them back in again about a month ago; Keli's stretches really do work well. Honestly, I would say give the tape at least two or three tries so you can get the choreography down; the overall benefits of the workout are very challenging and you will not be disappointed. ... This 50-minute low-impact aerobic workout is vintage Jane Fonda--literally! It consists of excerpts from routines from four earlier Jane Fonda videos: Stress Reduction, Lean Routine (where Jane is dressed in a lacy black fishnet-type unitard and little black boots), Low Impact (blue sequined leotard and blue legwarmers--remember those?), and Complete Workout. If you're easily bored, this constantly changing variety will keep you moving. The class participants are also varied--all dress differently and feel free to express their personalities. As always, if Fonda does a high-impact move, another class participant shows modifications. At the end, Fonda gives a 15-minute talk about how to eat and cook. Although this is an older video, it shows you why Jane Fonda became a major fitness celebrity and a workout-video trendsetter. Her workouts are fun and lively, and the production quality is high. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Workout
I really like this workout, that's why I wanted to buy a DVD version, but I see there isn't one. It does work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easier than I expected
A video with the words 'fat burner' in the title really should rev up your engines, so I found this one to be a bit disappointing. It's just too easy, pulling segments from her 'Low Impact' and 'Stress Reduction' videos, which are low-intensity routines. But you won't be bored--the change of style, scenery, and music makes it fun and interesting. The moves are very easy to catch on to, even in the dancy 'Lean Routine' segment. Horrifying 80's fashion and scary electric blue leotards, but your eyes will soon adjust. Overall an easy workout for advanced exercisers, probably great for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great variety, steady continuous exercise
I enjoyed the variety of routines in this video, and the clever transitions. It also does what is promises - "Fat Burners" - it's 50 minutes of exercise at a steady pace. Easy enough for beginners to not be frustrated, but challenging enough to provide a good workout for the more advanced. I was surprised to find that I enjoyed the discussion of diet and nutrition at the end, it's very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars This video is so much fun!
This is such a fun video! The segments switch from one year to the next with a whole different look and attitude. It would be worth watching just to giggle at the clothes and hairstyles of Jane's exercise crew. Jane makes you feel like you're working out with a friend. Her segment on proper nutrition is very good also. This video does take a bit of coordination, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Variety
This workout is great for anyone that wants variety in thier workout. You get used to one part, then poof! things change to another segment. Great aerobic workout for all fitness levels. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprise, suprise
I was quite intrigued by this video when I first saw it on the shelf and read the back cover, thinking " What the heck, I'll give it a try." I am impressed! From the very first workout, I could feel my abs really working and the very next day, believe it or not, I could actually see a difference! My stomach got flatter and my sides definitely narrowed. I am extremely pleased with this video and highly recommend it. It is effective, fun and easy to follow. I'm just starting out with this workout, but I'm quite confident this is the one that will help me get leaner and more defined abs. Great workout!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow workout for man or woman of any age.
I am a 66 year old female. (Not too many videos out there for people our age.) Although I appear younger. I'm an active person. I do aerobics, lifts weights and watch my diet. My problem has been with my stomach and flabby underarms or the triceps muscles.

When I first viewed this video with Gay Gasper. I thought this video wasn't for me. The instructor is too young and I won't be able to follow the workout, but after doing the workout with her, I was amazed how easy it was to follow each step.

Gay's explaination and slow execution of each step makes the workout easy and simple to undestand. I haven't had the video very long but I feel so much better when I am finished doing the exercises. I know I will be seeing positive results soon.

Even my husband who is not easily convinced with exercise videos has been trying the video out. I have not been able to master the last ab exercise (Forearm Plank with Alternating Leg Lift). Ouch! it's painful and hard to do. (But my husband can do it!) Oh Well, maybe it's the difference in the weight distribution and the strenght between us. But I will keep on trying. Overall, this is a great workout video for the abs. I recommend it to anyone regardless of age or sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABOUT TIME A REAL WORKOUT IS PRESENTED
I FOUND HE VIDEO AND INSTRUCTOR INSPIRATIONAL . FIRST, A REAL VARIETY OF EXERCISES WAS PERFORMED AND EXPLAINED IN DETAIL. SECOND, THE SEQUENCE OF EXERCISES WAS WELL PLANNED OUT AND FITS WELL FOR PEOPLE OF ALL FITNESS LEVELS. THIRD, GAY IS INSIRATIONAL AND HER ABS ARE SOMETHING TO PUSH FOR. IN SHORT , I FOUND IT EASY TO UNDERSTAND, WELL PLANNED OUT, CHALLENGING AND A REAL ASSET TO MY VIDEO COLLECTION

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Fun- who can ask for more?
Veena and Neena certainly provoke reaction that's for sure. I'm delighted that I bought this tape and have since purchased their boxed sets. I thoroughly enjoy them all.

This was my first intro to the twins and I watched through the tape before "trying it out" myself. I take classes so most of the moves were familiar to me, but I tried to look at it more like a bellydance *inspired* workout than an actual bellydance class. Having seen their other tapes I know they are able to provide the latter.

I enjoyed the length of the workout and the movements definitely engage all of you for a nice all over "Workout Lite". This is the kind of thing you don't mind doing after a long day at work- it's a bit of a vacation, even. I could, if I were a morning person, do this in the mornings for a great wakeup call!

The only thing that bothered me was the voice overs. I know that jumping around and speaking out of breath is bothersome also, so I don't really have an answer here. I was just put off by the vacant smiles; better of course than frowns or expressions of boredome, but I think some spoken breakdowns of the moves in between the voice overs would have helped to break that "trapped dancers of the sultan" look.

Then again, maybe that's what they were going for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Workout!!!
I recieved this video (as well as the basic moves) around Christmas of 2002 hoping for a productive and fun workout that I can stick to. Since then, I have found them very fun and I have looked forward to my workouts each morning since then. Since January 2nd, the day I started working out to them (as well as a sensible diet). I have lost 30 lbs and 6 inches and I am a now very happy size 6. I also recieved the arms and abs as well as the hips, thighs and buns. I am also in the process of getting the fat burning one too since that is also quite a workout. These are excersise videos that are wonderful aerobic workouts and they work. But I recomend going at your own pace when you first start your workout routine to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars FITNESS, not dance
I've seen a lot of reviews for this as if it is a dance instruction video - it is not. It is a fitness video. Just like it says on the box. With that said, it is a great workout video to get your heart rate up if done properly!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun but disappointing
I bought this video because of the rave videos I read on Amazon.com. So, I was expecting a lot. And I was disappointed. The workout itself was quite fun, the moves were interesting, and I liked the music used. However, I have issues with the voice-over instruction. First of all, the cuing was off and at many times it does not explain many of the moves (i.e. proper form). I'm used to instructors who explain the legwork as well as the arms so you don't have to keep your eyes peeled to the tv screen. Also, the voice-over made me feel like I was watching a performance. Veena and Neena are lovely women, but their smiles seemed to be those of performers, not women who are enjoying a workout. And while I felt like I was working my legs and arms, I didn't really feel like I was getting an cardio workout(and believe me, I put a lot of effort into it). This video is for the easygoing exerciser who wants to have low intensity fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BELLYDANCING SALON
This slim down video is great, for those who ever did Tae-Bo (we're talking about 10X more intense, yet fun) I work @ a Beauty salon and I told them about this tape. Since i lived down the street I gave them the option of me going to get it THEN. they agreed. I brought it popped into the VCR and men and women with plastic bags, nets, other beauticians couldn't resist merely watching it but insisted on getting up and chimmy. This is sold to at least 20 people. By the way there is not one day that i dont workout to this video and me and my co-workers already see a differance in me (and I"ve visited bellydancer instructors in chicago and none of them have a flabby stomach but more like the britney spears/ J.Lo type body) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An oldie - but the best!
I've used a lot of fitness videos and this one is my all time favorite. I've owned it since it was released in 1988. It is very simple and straight forward - the moves are not too jazzy or dancy. It is a thorough full body workout in only 30 minutes. The warm up and cool down are perfect in content and time, which is one place I've really found other videos lacking. After using the tape 3 times in one week, I've had people notice and comment on my muscle tone seeming to be improved. The video is so simple and the instructor is so concise with her instructions that I found it very easy to follow the video with my own music on - I found I could hear the instructor's comments just from memory and seeing her lips move and body language that accompanied the instructions she was giving during the workout. I'm very pleased to see this video is still available. I definitely wore my first one out and will purchase another!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect for Toning
I started using this video in 1990 after giving birth to my son, and got in the best shape I've ever been in. Ive used countless other workout videos since then, but this is my favorite. I use it to tone, or as a warm up before a run. Its simple, targeted exercises are the basics you need for a good toned body. I lost my tape when we moved, and was so glad to find it on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Workout
THis is the most best workout tape I have ever seen. It tones you in every part of your body, especially those trouble spots. It is great workout that is fun, easy and it really works! I recomend this tape for all ages and fitness levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hate to exercise, but love this video!
Must admit I am not an exerciser by trade, but came across this video nearly a decade ago after giving birth to my first child. Started using the video every day and found that I liked it -- a lot. When I went on vacation, I would even take a mini-cassette recorder and just record the instructor's voice and still be able to do the exercises while on vacation. That's how simple it is. I stopped using it several years ago, but it still lingered in my mind as one of my favorites. The warm-up I would use prior to going to the gym. Well, my daughters ran across the tape one day and got together in their video room to do the exercises. The next session, they asked me to join them. Once again, I am hooked on it. It's quick, effective and easy. And with my pudgy belly, it won't hurt a thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick but intense toning workout
The first thing that you will notice about this video is how outdated it looks: the instructor, Deborah Lee, is wearing bright blue with a wide headband; her four helpers are all in combinations of pink and green; and all five of them have "big" hair. If you can get past appearances, however, you will find a classic toning workout focused mainly on the lower body.

The workout opens with a warmup which lasts just over 5 minutes. Following this is about 8 minutes consisting mostly of traditional standing leg moves such as squats and lunges with a set of pushups thrown in. Then it's to the floor for some quick abs work completed in about 3 minutes. Next comes about 5 minutes of additional leg work (still on the floor) for the inner and outer thights, and finally, there is a short (3 minutes) cool down at the end.

Although this workout is quite short (more like 25 mintues rather than the 35 minutes stated on the box), it is intense, and your muscles will definitely "feel the burn" as they used to say at the time this tape was made (1988). As an instructor, Deborah Lee is extremely straight-forward: she displays each move with excellent form, but her instructions are minimal, and she does not chatter words of encouragement as so many instructors do. No weights are used, making this tape a nice, simple workout for the time-crunched, space-crunched at-home exerciser. ... Read more

The title is somewhat a misnomer: this 83-minute video isn't a "workout" so much as a ballet class. If you've taken ballet in the past--or if you've always wanted to--pull on your tights and leg warmers and enjoy this video. Melissa Lowe, a former soloist and principal dancer with several ballet companies, leads two levels of workout. Level 1 is for those with little or no ballet training; ballet experience is helpful for level 2. Each level has three segments: floor work (stretches to warm up the muscles), barre work (standing exercises and positions done holding onto a barre or chair), and center work (more intense conditioning with balance, traveling, and some jumping). If you're not already flexible, you'll find the stretches daunting, even at level 1. This is a 1984 video and doesn't have the production quality you find in more current videos, but ballet is timeless. The music is solo piano--just like in ballet class. The lithe, willowy instructor doesn't smile or try to engage the audience, but she sure knows ballet, and her flexibility and grace are awe inspiring. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth my time and money
I started dance classes three years ago at the age of 38, and bought The Ballet Workout to help develop more muscle control in my hips and legs. I've done yoga, Pilates, belly dance, aerobic dance, but really, nothing compares to ballet for gaining the strength and muscle control I'm looking for.
Melissa Lowe is a good teacher. Her voice is pleasant, and her descriptions of movements were very precise, complete, and not at all redundant. As a beginner-level adult, I needed that level of explanation so I could execute movements correctly without injury.
Some things, like Ms. Lowe's stage makeup and poker face may seem jarring to the 21st century viewer, but keep in mind that this tape was produced in 1983, one of the very first dance instruction videos, before teachers had much collective experience before a video camera.
For me, the moves are difficult to execute, even at the tape's "beginner level", perhaps because of my age and inherent lack of flexibility. I would have appreciated being able to see what the exercises look like when executed correctly, although the dancer cannot yet achieve complete turnout or raise the leg fully. Melissa Lowe's verbal description was a great help for me to be able to make a good guess, but a demo would have worked even better.
I look forward to seeing more of Melissa Lowe's video instruction, as in these last twenty years, she will have become a prodigious teacher.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this video!
I took ballet for several years growing up and even got on toe. I stopped and came back to ballet when I was in my 20's. I have loved this video b/c it feels like my old ballet classes, is the right length of time, leaves me feeling like I worked out (and have improved my posture), and is a literal "class." I was looking so forward to receiving the New York City Ballet DVD and was sorely disappointed with the lack of "class" feel (even though it is very well shot) b/c I love barre work. (Also, if you want to look at a bunch of naked bodies . . . well, I prefer the "good, old fashioned" tights and leotard in Miss Lowe's workout way better -- way better)!

The only drawback I see (and I agree with other reviewers) is that I wish she had explained more of the moves as you do them. She never really explains them and then expects you to figure them out as you dance (while your eyes are down at the floor or following your hand)?!! You have to watch and memorize the tape before you can do the moves, frankly -- which if you have prior ballet experience is somewhat easy to pick up on, but frustrating, none the less, at least at first! I love the music she chooses, but the exercises are a bit short. I wish she had done them twice on each leg or made them a bit longer like many of the classes that I have taken. Still, I am happy and look forward to my "class" every day I do them. I recommend the second workout in her series for a more advanced dancer. Personally, I am still working on the first (even though I have enough "knowledge" to keep up with the second) simply b/c I need to get back in shape again. Enjoy your workout!

Oh, and Miss Lowe is a typical "dancer," so I didn't expect to be "entertained" during her explanations. Her dancing makes up plenty for others' comments about her "dryness" of personality in reaching out to the video audience. I thought she was splendid, and is a beautiful dancer and example to follow! My understanding of dancing, and what I need to do to be a good dancer, is enhanced and strengthened by simply watching her . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars For FORMER classical ballet dancers - Excellent Workout
The Ballet Workout, Level I, is approx. a 40 minute workout which includes the floor warmup, barre work and some center work. There is also a Level II on the tape that is also approx. 40 minutes and the ballet steps are a little more advanced. For me, the 40 minute workout is a perfect length of time since I, as we all do, have a full schedule. The most exciting thing about the tape for me is that I am basically taking a ballet class again, but in the privacy of my own home. I studied classical ballet for 15 years, but it has been 20 years since then. The instructor executes her movements perfectly. The 4 other women students are intermediate level, which doesn't intimidate me. Since I am familiar with the terminology & timing of steps, it is easy to follow. I also like that the tape doesn't waste too much time with explanations or corrections, so I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has had little to no ballet training. There is always a chance of injury if someone is not correcting body positioning.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite workout!
This is a wonderful classical ballet workout, with piano like you would hear in the studio. Both the beginner and intermediate levels include floor stretches, barre work, then center work (without barre). This is not an aerobic workout, but it is a fabulous way to work both strength and flexibility. With ballet you are going to use all your muscles, including ones you didn't know you had. If you've had no or little ballet exposure, it will take a little time to learn the routines but once you do it pays off. During the exercises, the instructor provides many useful tips on form that will help you get a better workout, and are especially helpful to someone who hasn't had prior training.

I think the workout is timeless, and a great find for someone who enjoys the structure of classic ballet instruction. I wish the title was available on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and a little too easy
Ms. Lowe has made an excellent tape for true beginners. I danced ballet several years ago, and given it up. Recently I've been doing Pilates and yoga which led me back to my old love. When I came back to dancing I thought I was in terrible shape, but not this bad, I guess! It's a good tape, the quality's not the best, but for a real workout, try a class or the NYCB's tape, which is much better.
Note: The second workout is slightly more challenging. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An effective but dated workout
I had a few problems with this video. First of all, the appearance is very dated looking, especially given that Tamilee wears a visor throughout the workout. The set is very plain, and the production quality is poor. With respect to the exercises themselves, I'm concerned that some of the moves she does for abs may be bad for the neck. In Tamilee's more recent videos, she has eliminated these exercises, so I wonder if they are no longer recommended. The arms workout is good but consists of mostly traditional moves, although Tamilee does add a few twists such as doing a set of bicep curls coming only halfway up instead of a full curl.

I really like Tamilee, but this video is old and not her best. If you want to try one of Tamilee's more recent arms and abs workouts, I would recommend her Quick Toning Arms and Abs, which consists of 3 15-minute programs, each combining arms and abs work. She also has several even newer tapes in her "I Want Those..." series, which are more challenging. Although this video does give the arms and abs a pretty good workout, it is out-of-date, and there are better recent choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arms & Abs is excellent!
I used to do lots of traditional push-ups and sit ups to keep in shape for Military Physical Fitness tests. I now alternate between Arms & Abs and Arms & Abs 2. I have worked up to using fairly heavy weights (dumbells) between 15 & 40 lbs. Physical Fitness tests are no problem. An overall great workout that with the occasional fast forward, allows you to keep up your heart rate for the additional cardio-vascular benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-release It!
This is an excellent work-out video and should be re-released. I need a new one!

5-0 out of 5 stars re-release it!
i bought this 3 years ago and it just died in my vcr yesterday - haven't been able to find it anywhere - i LOVE this video and i pray they re-release it! wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for older, in-shape folks
Have had excellent results in about six weeks and expect to progress more as I do more reps and add heavier weights. Division between abs/arm exercises just right. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great video if you haven't been exercising
After the birth of my first child I worked out religiously, but once I hit my target size and weight I stopped. When I got pregnant again recently I was really disappointed in myself that I'd quit working out because as any pregnant woman knows, you can't leap into heavy exercise if you've been inactive. I knew I had to start exercising again because I wanted to be fit and healthy for the entire pregnancy and delivery, as well as afterwards. I looked around for a pre-natal workout and nothing really turned me on until I saw this one. I can say that after only a few workouts it's the perfect video for someone like me!

Despite chasing my toddler around all day, it still isn't really "exercise." This video is broken down into three 10-minute segments which you can do in any order you want. I prefer to do all three at once, and try to do them every other day. On my non-video days I walk because there really isn't much cardio on this video. However, that isn't a bad thing because these workouts really target certain "trouble" areas. The first segment is lower body, with things like squats (using a chair for support). The second segment is upper body, and they use filled water bottles for resistance. I prefer to use 5 lb. hand weights but it's just a personal preference. I need more weight to feel like I'm actually working my arms. The third segment is floor work, including abdominal work without actually lying on your back! The time goes by really fast, you don't feel worn out at all, and the instructor is not annoying which really is important.

The only reason I gave this video 4 stars instead of 5 was because she does not stretch you out before or after. She'll do tiny intermittent stretches between some exercises, but I believe that you need to stretch before and/or after working out, especially when pregnant and your body is more sensitive. I was hoping for some advice/suggestions on how to safely stretch while pregnant, but that wasn't a part of the video.

Overall however, if you have been inactive for a long period of time and want to get your preggo body going, this is a great way to start. It's not difficult, it targets important areas, and the instructor is great. If you're looking for something with lots of cardio however, this isn't the video to get. Remember to always talk to your doctor about starting an exercise program if you are pregnant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent workout for moms to be!
This video won't by itself keep you in shape during pregnancy, but it's a BIG help. Each 10 minute workout is easy to learn, challenging and fun to do. I got up early at least 5 mornings per week starting at 4 1/2 months right up until a few days before I delivered to do at least one, if not all three, of the segments, before going to work. It was a great way to start my day.

Nancy Pop is an excellent trainer - calm and encouraging in a non-irritating way. I looked at a lot of pre-natal exercise videos before choosing this one and was not at all disappointed. I was able to go at my own pace and felt great and stronger after each workout.

While you still need to be disciplined with your diet, and walking or another form of cardio exercise is important, this video is an easy and fun way to stay in shape during this important part of your life. In the end I gained only 30 pounds, and had no trouble getting back in shape after my baby was born. I also recommend their post-natal workout video. ... Read more

You want a tough, advanced workout? Boxing aerobic workouts are hot for athletic cross-training, aerobic conditioning, and both upper- and lower-body strengthening. Boxing offers a good cross-training alternative to step and aerobic dance, which are all leg work. Michael Olajide Jr., 12-year boxing veteran and former World Middleweight contender, is the real instructor in this workout, assisted by Kathy Smith. Olajide first demonstrates the correct form of basic boxing moves such as jab, power punch, hook, and upper cut, which involve the whole upper body and the abs, not just the arms. Then he leads a killer-paced aerobic routine requiring stamina, strength, agility, speed, and coordination. The fast upper-body moves turn into whole-body boxing moves, both stationary and moving, that also work the legs, thighs, and buttocks. The cardiovascular workout is intense, fast, and relentless, designed for the experienced aerobic exerciser. Periodic jump-rope segments (which get progressively more difficult) add more legwork, aerobic intensity, and coordination. The cool-down slows things down somewhat but still contributes to a high-powered workout. Only during the stretch segment at the end do you get a chance to catch your breath. A knockout of a workout! 3-0 out of 5 stars Intense and tough workout
I bought this workout because I LOVE Kathy Smith's Kickboxing workout. This workout is definately intended for intermediate and even more towards advanced level exercisers. Michael Olajide, Jr. leads the workout, not Kathy. His instructions are unclear at times, and the camera angles constantly change as well as it switches from black and white to color, which doesn't help either. This workout requires a high level of endurance it is very likely that even regular exercisers will not make it through the whole workout the first few times. The other part that I found tough about this workout is that a large portion of it is committed to jumping rope, something that I found difficult to do in the living room, and imposible to do outside while being led by the video. While the workout can be done without the rope, you are then just pretending to jumprope witch I feel comprimises what is to be gotten out of the workout. The jumprope portion is divided into three separate sets, each being harder than the one before. By the third set even Kathy has dropped out, no where to be found. This workout is an excellent video for anyone looking for a challenging workout that is not trying to accomodate beginners. The next day my calves were so tight and sore that I had to do yoga stretching to just walk normal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toning!Aerobic!Fun!Well Coordinated!Challenging!
Before there was Tae-Bo there was this video.Kathy Smith combines her outstanding ability to instruct with a diverse group of men and women going through the workout with her, and a professional boxer who gives this workout an authentic boxing feel. The sound and setting is well done and the workout is broken into three sections in order to pace yourself based on your ability. I have enjoyed doing this workout over and over because it is so different and effective. I recommend it to anyone who wants a change of pace in their workout, anyone who has not boxed before (it is such an invigorating experience)and to anyone who wants to tone their upper body, abs and calves! This video is particularly useful to anyone who may be slightly uncoordinated, those who have not yet attempted any of the kick-boxing videos or classes, or anyone with sensitive knees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video for intermediate/ advanced exerciser!
I love this video! I bought this video when it came out and I still use it. I teach aerobics and kickboxing and sometimes I just love to pop this video in and have fun.
This is not for the beginner!! Especially the jump rope segments. You can do them without the jump rope, but it's still challenging, so definitely be prepared for some intensity.
If you want something a little different than the usual aerobic/ step videos out there, this is the one. No equipment necessary and you don't need much space either.
The music is great and very motivating and Michael Olijade is a terrific instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kick-ass workout!
This is an awesome workout, though definitely not for beginners. It is high intensity cardio, especially the jump-rope segments. You will want to make sure you get a good boxer's speed rope....you can buy one for around $5.00 at big department stores like Walmart, and make sure you have a big enough space to do it in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough , Tough, Great!
I thought I was in good shape when I first tried this tape several years ago...before the whole Tae Bo thing. I was sadly mistaken...this tape humbled me. What a great workout and Michael Olijade was awesome....I am not in great shape anymore so I am not going to try it until I am.....but I look forward to it....AWESOME! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars tough tape, great results
When I bought this tape a little over a month ago, I thought I was decently fit. I ran 40 minutes three times a week and walked every other day. The first time I tried super cardio, I was surprised to find myself totally winded half way through this workout. I've been doing it about twice a week since then(and using other aerobic workouts on the other five days), and I still am not quite able to do all the pliometric squats in this tape--but my legs are much more solid, and now I can run 60 minutes. I never imagined such fantastic results from a video!

One heads up: you will need some light hand weights (I use 5 lbs) and a "short box" (I bought a $12 rubbermaid step stool, which works perfectly--they recommend the "Fanny Lifter" on the box, but they don't actually use it in this video, which makes me think it hadn't actually come out yet when they filmed). They also recommend a weighted ball, but you can use any old ball to get started and work up to the added weight.

The music is a bit new age-y for my taste, and the instructors are very understated (they don't yell encouragements, but rather just cue each exercise and leave it at that), but this really is the most incredible workout video I've used. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb music!
This workout has the best music the Firm has ever used. 1 song is from Fat Blaster and a few have been used in the Cardio series, but alot of it is new. The video has 4 instructors, but each instructor has a block of approximately 4 songs in a row so it isn't choppy. Some use the step, but most is low impact. There are a few plyo jumps as well, but easy to follow or lower if need be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fanny Lifter Came Out in '88
That's a guess, I'd have to go look at my old FIRM tapes to know for sure. It started with a plywood Fanny Lifter, now they have a plastic two level Step.

The FIRM is the best. I haven't tried this one (I'm still stuck on the tried and true for the last 15 years - The Origial FIRM videos. I have too many of them. My husband welded me a nice 14" Fanny Lifter out of steel, I don't worry about tripping it over.

5-0 out of 5 stars TOUGH BUT FUN WORKOUT
I have quite a few fitness videos, and I think this one has become my new favorite. It is a mix of high-low aerobics sometimes using a weighted ball (I use a 4 pounder), a short step, and light hand weights. It's tough in some places (lots of plyometrics), but just when it would seem like I might need to slow down, they would mercifully move on to something else. If you don't like the current instructor, just wait a few minutes and a new one will lead, but I liked all of them, they were great. It's not too long, not too short, just right. I'm 45 years old and an intermediate exerciser. If I can do it, so can you!

2-0 out of 5 stars Still Searching for That Perfect Exercise Video!!!!
I recently and eagerly purchased this exercise video after reading the other reviews here. While it is a very thorough work-out, most of the time for me it was difficult to follow (I am a klutz!)the quick-changing steps of many of the routines. Also, it was NOT easy on my knees, ankles, or shins with all the pliometric jumping and all the running in place. I am in my mid 40's and in relatively decent shape; maybe if I were 15 years younger!! I did feel thoroughly challenged in regards to endurance and coordination!! Probably a tape better suited for very advanced, well-coordinated folks. I would definitely NOT recommend it to people with knee, ankle, or shin problems. ... Read more

Yoga has become wildly popular among many age groups because of itsimmense benefits to the skeletal and muscular structure (not to mention themeditative calm that can be achieved through practice). Denise Austin:Xtralite, Beginner's Yoga Essentials delivers a basic workout that explainsthe core postures and functions of yoga. If Denise Austin is one of yourfavorites, this format and approach will suit you well. Austin exhibits theenergy and enthusiasm that she is known for while teaching this session in anapproachable and uncomplicated manner. The 40-minute workout comprises foursections that range in difficulty and focal points. The first of these setsspotlights floor postures with a range of movements from back bends to forwardbends. These poses lengthen and limber the hamstring and lower back muscleswhile putting minimal strain on the joints of the legs. The second segment workson standing postures to increase strength, stamina, and balance. The mountain, triangle, and tree poses are demonstrated here and concentration is essential tokeep steady grounding. Cueing lacks some important safety info here (example:not extending the knee over the toe while in lunge position), but with someattention to Austin's body alignment, even the true beginner should be able topick up the correct form. The sun salutation combines 12 successive movementswithin the third set and will make you sweat with the constant motion and deepposes. The final portion teaches relaxation and breathing techniques that arecentral to any yoga practice. Terminology throughout this workout may differslightly from other yoga classes, but the basics of the practice are providedwith that straightforward Denise Austin energy. You will need a mat or towel anda strap. --Olivia Voigts ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Feels Great!
This is an excellent yoga tape for beginners. The moves are not to hard and not to easy. Even if you are not a beginner this tape is nice to use. If you are a fan of Denise you will enjoy following this tape (the moves are easy to follow) and get plenty of her encouraging and motivational words. Again, if you are not a fan of Denise or find her perky attitude annoying, I would not reccomend this tape. I, however, appreciate and listen to what she's saying in all of her workouts because they keep me going and motivated. Luckily, I didn't have to buy this from Amazon, I found it at a thrift store...!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great place to start
I don't find her perky attitude annoying, but supportive. The video is beautifully made and easy to do.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst exercise tape I have ever seen
Although Denise is a good aerobics instructor, I believe she is merely cashing in on the current yoga craze. I have completed beginner classes at my gym and thought a beginners tape would be beneficial to continue at home....not so. She makes an effort to slow down and tone down her "peppiness" - which is highly irritating by the way. This tape left me feeling annoyed rather than relaxed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perky, enjoyable, changes body and attitude
This is an enjoyable introduction to yoga. If you don't like an instructor giving verbal encouragement ("You're doing great!") you might get annoyed with Denise's perky comments, but many people like me appreciate any positive feedback they can get -- even from a video!

Because I have neurological problems that cause significant balance problems, I cannot keep up with her fast pace when she is doing the sun saluations. However, I can still do them (slower!) and I appreciate other modifications she gives which help those who need modifications. Even using the modifications I am seeing changes in my body and am excited about how yoga helps me feel calmer. Definitely worth the money!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starting place
This is a very good place to start if you're new to yoga. Denise covers the basics and takes her time with the stretches. Sun salutation is a good way to end the exercise. The only drawback I found is her patronizing way to say you're doing "wonderful" and everything is "beautiful". How can she see me? I don't look that great! ... Read more

This innovative workout blends traditional strength-training moves, suchas squats and lunges, with yoga postures and Pilates-inspired moves in aninteresting, varied format. Led by Minna Lessig, a former Ms. Fitness USA andN.P.C. National Fitness Champion, you move gracefully from position to position. For example, beginning in a plié you transition into a warrior pose, orfrom a wide squat into a tree pose, to sounds of music with a Latin beat. Inanother exercise, Minna has you hold a push-up position (a posture called "theplank") for long enough to tremble, then push your hips up until you're in thedownward dog pose.

Although you don't use weights, the workout is challenging because you'reconstantly stopping your momentum in order to balance, and because you'reholding postures that fatigue the muscles. The routine works the lower body muchmore than the upper body. A long, soothing stretch sequence at the end works ourflexibility--one component of fitness that is often neglected. Minna is a fineinstructor, capably leading us through difficult sequences with grace and calm.--Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workout! This one's a winner!!
I really love this video which came as a surprise as it's not the kind of exercise I usually enjoy. I've tried several other yoga and Pilates videos and although they seem like good workouts they don't motivate me. This one is really motivational with the benifits of yoga-type exercise but combined with traditional aerobics to keep you moving. The music is great to listen to which is not always easy to find. The instructor is helpful and encouraging without being over-bearing. I find people like Denise Austin to be really annoying! This video does have some modifications for beginners and this workout will give you a great deal of exercise without having to do any bouncing and jumping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this video
This was a great workout for me, I enjoyed the combination of traditional strength moves for my butt and thighs doing squats, and then the yoga stretching through out to lengthen the muscles. Minna is consistant with her instruction and is easy to follow. It is challenging, I'm still working to be able to go through the whole plank position section, and fun to do. Some of the girls that work out with her do have the pasted on smile but that didnt bother me that much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good workout for low impact
I enjoy this tape. Yea, it's tough for a beginner, but it wouldn't be a very good workout if a beginner could get through it easily. It's good for those of you want to stretch and work on muscel tone with some exercises that yoga tapes usually don't have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Growth
I agree with the viewer who wrote this isn't a workout that can be completed by anyone new to youga or pilates. However, it is a great video to monitor your progress. It took me four months before I could get through the video 98%. Sometimes the pushup are still to much
