Dudley Moore stars as the voice of Spin, a world-wandering, animated globe in this edition of National Geographic's Really Wild Animals series. With Spin narrating a journey from the Arctic to the Antarctic and many places in between, the video starts with the tale of a mother polar bear emerging from hibernation with newborn cubs in tow. This sense of kinship runs through the entire presentation, culminating with scenes of a human family researching penguin and whale preservation. Polar Prowl showcases many types of polar wildlife, from arctic rabbits and the South Pole's elephant seals to New Zealand's Snares Island penguins, entertaining as well as informing us as we are treated to several catchy and educational songs. Important keywords pop up on screen as they are defined in a typical example of the video's style--explaining the intricacies of nature in ways that children can understand. --Zachary Lively ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material for teaching about the Polar Regions

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I bought the Right Brain and Left Brain series before we had ever seen any other kind of of baby video/DVD. I had to write a review because my daughter absolutely loves them. Once the show starts she literally stops everything and watches intently, stopping only to clap her hands and squeal! She loved them so much that we ran out and got some Baby Einstein videos, which she likes but they don't seem to have the same appeal. The Brainy Baby's are definitely more compelling for her and seem to be more educational than entertaining.

She began watching these occasionally at 9 months or so - she is now 13 months and still loves both Left and Right versions. We are very pleased that we bought these - yes the effects are a bit low tech (as other reviewers have mentioned), but my daughter doesn't seem to care!

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby can't take his eyes off it!
My 9-month old watched Baby Mozart every morning for the past 5 months, and refused to watch any of the other videos in that series. I thought he might finally be getting bored with it, so I decided to give Brainy Baby a try based on the reviews here. I couldn't believe how much he enjoys it!

He doesn't kick his feet and smile like he does with Baby Mozart. Instead, he watches the screen very intently. It's as if he really understands it and is getting smarter as he watches. I can see the wheels turning in that right brain of his! He seems to concentrate very hard while watching this video and does not want to be distracted. For that and the extra 15 minutes it gives me over Baby Mozart, I am very very thankful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brainy Baby Right Brain
My son has grown up on Baby Einstein and was captivated by them but now that he is 22 months old and talking he prefers the the Brainy Baby Right Brain over any of his Baby Einstein. He will sit and watch most of this video which is a feat for him because he is very active. I have just ordered 2 more of the Brainy Baby videos from Amazon and hope they are as enjoyable as Right Brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars ALL CHILDREN ARE DIFFERENT
While many people are bashing this video, I seem to have no problem with it. Teaching your baby is the best thing that a parent can do. I only look to the TV as entertainment for my children, not as a babysitter or a teacher. I believe that is the problem with most people complaining that the video doesn't keep their children entertained while they do housework etc. Others complain that the voice is annoying it all depends on who is listening to it, it is not for adults it is for children. I own a large daycare, and I have had parents lend me their videos for my "movie time Fridays", and I have found that different children respond to different things. Children who are less hyper tend to keep their attention focused than their hyperactive counterparts. I believe that this video is a great buy for certain types of children, if you think that your child is a child who would like what is shown on this video then purchase it. A good way to find out about the video before you buy it is to rent it from you local library if there is a program like that in your city. Otherwise read the ratings, because unlike bad carseats, video responses vary from child to child. As far as it not being Baby Einstein, uh, duh, I think anyone who looks at the cover could see that. READ THE COVER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brainy Baby RIGHT BRAIN
You know you have a hit on your hands when even your boys want to sit and watch this wonderful video over and over again! I pass them walking around the house humming the music and even asking for art materials to try some of the things they have seen in the video. Best educational video I have seen for motivating the creative side of children and it has motivated me to buy other Brainy Baby videos. Try it-you won't be dissapointed!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Was there important content cut out of it?
I was very disappointed with the content of this video, after being so positively impacted by the same book. I don't think that I would have been able to grasp the occupational therapy concepts presented in the video without having first read the book. Hoping for a summary of the book to share with collegues and other parents, I am hesitant to pass this video along because the content is sketchy and does not flow nearly as well as the book. It felt like some of the author's presentation was cut out. Invest in the book first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Way!
Okay so Bev Dillon is a little too sweet and boring, but who cares! Yikes, I am a self taught crocheter, or at least I thought I was till I saw this. I was doing double crochet wrong at the end of rows! I learned how to make granny squares finally, and do ripple stitch, and work in the round, and other tips and hints that make working with yarn easier. She begins with how to make a knot and goes slowly from there to things I never knew existed! This is truly the best way to learn, it's all here, pausable, rewindable, and available at my library whenever the need arises! I do however agree that these tapes should be made into DVDs soon. Also check out Knitting from Start to Finishing. Check your library before you spend the money, you'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilled with this Video!
I wanted so desperately to learn crochet, but could find no teachers or classes in my area. Craft books with pictures just don't cut it, and I needed someone to "show" me. This video lived up to my expectations and more. Bev Dillon slowly and patiently shows you all the basic stitches and goes way beyond the basics with little tips and tricks, then on to more complex and advanced techniques. The camera angles show you her hands as she works, and it helps so much because you can easily follow along as though you were looking over her shoulder as she crochets! A little pattern booklet accompanies the video (inside the video jacket - on the outside of the box. It's there, sort of hidden). This video is the next best thing to having a personal teacher. I only wish it were on DVD; would make it much easier to locate the chapters! Buy this if you want to learn how to crochet on your own. You'll be on your way in no time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A little pricey but worth it.
Even though it is pricey, I can lend it out to people who always ask me to teach them to crochet.
I learned how to crochet at age 8 however, this video has update my skills tremendously.
I learned how to use items I just put aside because I thought I did not need them.
Also, stitches that I thought all this time I was doing right, now I know how to use them correctly.
I really recommend this video, for the beginner and above.

5-0 out of 5 stars Demonstration is the best teacher
I tried to teach myself crochet from the books I found in crafts stores, but sooner or later someone has to show you how to turn corners, weave in ends, and read patterns. If you don't have access to someone who is knowledgable and very experienced in crochet, I whole-heartedly recommend this video. You can see close-ups of the stitches and Bev Dillon's hands as if you're looking down at your own hands. Another plus for beginners...as she demonstrates the stitches, she shows you slowly and talks you through it, and during some segments of the video, you can watch her crochet at full-speed and see how she develops rhythm. This is definitely lacking in the how-to books.

This video includes projects and a booklet that contains all the items she crochets in the video, including a granny square which I find challenging as a beginner. Since I purchased this video, I took a crochet class, but I find myself going back and watching the video often for a refresher of particular stitches and techniques. If you're motivated to learn crochet, there's no better investment. The skill stays with you for a lifetime! (and the marvel you get from non-crocheters will definitely boost your confidence and keep you moving on to more complicated projects)

5-0 out of 5 stars Your own Personal Crochet Teacher
This video is above five stars! Mrs. Dillon is almost like having your grandmother teach you.How they film it is of great help because it is as if you are looking down at your own hands.I never thought that I could do this and with in the first minutes of the video I was CROCHETING ! Very clear and calm instrutions, better then any book. If my best friend wanted to learn to crochet I would buy her this video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Things!
What an incredible video! The creators of this video series have really outdone themselves in Volume 6 of Signing Time.

Children and adults can learn ASL Signs for Colors, Fruits, Veggies, Activities and feeling positive about things that they can accomplish.

The Songs "I'm Really Good" and "Shine" are so beautiful they bring tears to my eyes."The Rainbow Song" is so much fun I catch myself singing it all the time!"5 A Day" is all about eating healthy food, but it's absolutely silly if you attempt to Sign it as quickly as Rachel Coleman... try not tangle yourself up in knots! If you've mastered the "Silly Pizza Song" from Volume 3, this one's for you!

I recommend these videos to anyone who has children or cares for children - whether they are hearing, deaf, hard of hearing, typically developing or have special challenges.I have seen these videos help so many families and allow children to communicate where they once couldn't.

The Colemans and Browns (Alex and Leah's families) have the ability to change lives with their talent, energy, creativity, enthusiasm and their dedication to ALL children.

Keep those videos coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Must see
www.signingtime.com.
We love these videos. My children are both hearing and have been watching them since my first daughter was 6 mths, she is now 2 years. She has many signs under her belt and loves watching Alex and Leah and learning more. These have given her a hunger to learn more. We love the rainbow song in this one it is a fave and we love the music and songs that accompany these videos. They are pleasing to the eye, not only for Children but for adults also. we never get tired of watching them. I have always had a desire to learn sign language and these videos have promoted it in such a way that even I ahve a hunger for more. Rachel Coleman the producer has done an excellent job in helping to reinforce the words not only in sign but also in written form and also in audio form throughout the video, so my child has not only learnt signs but also new words as her vocabulary expands.
These are a must buy! My daughter has now learnt all her colours in the last week from watching this video a couple of times. Yeah Rachel

5-0 out of 5 stars We love 1-6 and are excited for more to come!
This video is the last (thus far) in a fantastic series of Sign Language videos. They graphics are very funny!Rachel has written fabulous songs that you can't get out of your head! And she has a fantastic voice. Both of my children (ages 3 and 7) have learned to sign from these videos and both are hungry for even more. They ask EVERYDAY to watch a Signing Time video and we listen to the Signing Time CD in the car and sign and sing along! When my youngest was 2 she spoke a lot, but could not be understood. She learned to sign from watching the Signing Time videos and when I couldn't understand her words, she would sign to me and I could see the relief on her face that I understood her.We had NO terrible twos! I am so grateful to Signing Time for teaching my kids a second language.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite things
We discovered Signing Time while researching ASL (American Sign Language) as a 2nd language for our children. We knew we wanted to teach ASL as a 2nd language because of the many benefits such as earlier communication. You can communicate with your baby as young as 8 months old, maybe even younger. What a gift to know what your child needs before they can tell you with spoken words! For more information on the benefits of ASL check out the Signing Time website at www.signingtime.com

We love this volume of Signing Time. The songs are wonderful and work very well in a school setting as well as at home. The rainbow song teaches all the colors of the rainbow. The song I'm really good at... introduces many opportunities to discuss the strengths that everyone has. We are all good at something so let's celebrate. The songs are very catchy so you will find they get stuck in your head. They are fun to sign along with and do not move too fast so even beginning signers will be able to keep up with a little practice.

We love that we get to hear Leah's voice. What a positive experience for children who are Deaf and Hard Of Hearing to see another Child who is Deaf proudly using their voice. Leah does a great job. It is also great for children who are hearing to see that children who are Deaf can and do use their voices. Alex does a great job as well. We love to see the 2 friends/cousins interacting together. We also enjoyed the addition of the frog Hopkins. He helps transition from one theme to another smoothly.

We like that the written word comes on the screen first and then they show the sign. It is very helpful for practicing the signs. It is like a video flashcard. It also helps children develop reading skills because they start to recognize the written word that goes with the sign. We love watching the children do the signs because you see lots of different kids and lots of different skill levels. It gives you an idea of how your child might make the sign at different ages. Rachel also does the sign so you can clearly see the proper way to do it. She has paint on her fingers to help you focus on her finger positions. This is a new addition for Volumes 3-6. Some people find it distracting at first but I found it very helpful.

The song during the credits is a great way to learn additional signs that were not covered in the show. You can really add to your signing vocabulary if you pay attention. The new version of the theme song is a little slower (so you can sign along) and has an additional verse. Some may not like it as well as the original but we loved it. We love the original version too so make sure you get both. The older version is in Volumes 1-3. We liked the new verse "Where friends can meet and find we're not so different after all" Isn't that what Signing Time is all about?

I highly recommend this volume of signing time as well as the other 5 in the series. As a mother and a teacher I can say it is truly the best educational tool I have found for teaching ASL to children (and adults too). I hope they make many more and I will buy them all without hesitation. These shows are a labor of love for these families and we are thankful they chose to share with us.

I am a homeschool mother of 2. I love some of these videos but this one was a little upsetting from a Christian view point. Lots of hints that we are from cave men and dating back billions of years on fossil findings. My husband and I did not feel this was a video we would let little ones watch again and again. We loved the Butterfly and Moth video.

Both my 4 year old & 7 year old love the Eyewitness videos. Mammal does a great job of covering the variations in mammals in a way that not only engages my kids, even with repeated viewings, but also wear well on Mom & Dad. My kids have really learned from this video (& others in the series) and have held their own in conversations using info they got from Eyewitness. Despite a "reccommended" older age group for the companion books, the videos are ok for for 4-5+ (depending on their interest level). My kids always have Eyewitness Videos on their Wish Lists. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great for cat enthusiasts, but NOT FOR CHILDREN!!!!!
An excellent video for an adult to learn about cats and their linkage to the big cats. Great footage and stories of cats' amazing abilities. However, disturbing footage of a male lion killing a cub in front of the cubs siblings causes me to remove a star. I felt including this footage unnecessary to enriching my knowledge of cats. Because of this scene and others which detail male cats killing kittens, I would consider this video totally inappropriate for children (especially if they love cats). I think it should not be listed in the "children & family" section on Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cats rule
I'm an avid viewer of National Geographic's old specials. Being a major cat lover, I think they really did a wonderful job here. The studying of farm cats and their comparison to their wild relatives was very interesting, not to mention cute (that little kitten being lost just about broke my heart). There's so much more to cats than their seemingly lazy and independent lifestyle.

However, I'm taking off one star for the very, very morbid scene of an agressive male lion slaughtering a poor cub. I personally thought it was rather sick of them to put that in. I can't even bear to watch it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I GIVE IT............
I would have to give this item a 5 because it has been the best national geographic in the whole corporation. thankyou for your time. good-bye.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great video
The highlight of this insightful video was a study of farm cats. The study revealed that when living in groups, the domestic cat behaves much like the lions in a lion pride in the wild. Just a really fun view of the world of cats and their wild relatives. ... Read more

This is a well-made documentary with excellent footage, a complementary musical score, and a well-organized narrative that gives viewers a full portrait of a woman who, in 1960, went alone into the heart of Africa at the age of 26 and remained there for decades studying chimpanzees.

Louis Leakey chose Goodall's vocation for her. As his secretary she did not think she had the proper qualifications to study chimps, but he knew otherwise. He sent her to Gombe National Park in Tanzania. The details of Goodall's life given in this video describe not only why Goodall chose such an unusual life but how she has been able to do it, giving the viewer a reason to care about her and in turn about the chimps.

By observing the chimp societies for three decades, she discovered that they used tools, and though she originally thought they were more gentle than humans, she learned they had a dark side too. In 1975 four of her students were kidnapped by armed rebels from Zaire and were held for 10 weeks. Goodall was harshly criticized for caring more about her research than about her students. Confronting the controversy on film makes for fascinating dialogue as Goodall defends herself.

In Jane Goodall: My Life with the Chimpanzees, viewers will learn as much about this incredibly outspoken woman as about the chimps. Her crusade to save them in the wild (at the time of the filming there were only 160 chimps left in Gombe National Park) is extremely important, as is her campaign to improve the situations of chimps in zoos or in laboratories living in horrible conditions. A visit to the chimp cages in a U.S. lab is done with utmost taste but is still mind-blowing. With a smile and mimicking a chimp's hello, Goodall gently forces us all to question the ethics of animal testing. --Cristina Del Sesto ... Read more

The makers of the Standard Deviants series set out to liven up their topics. In Marketing the Deviants get zany for an hour and 45 minutes of basic marketing principles, all the while underpinning their tomfoolery with solid educational methods like mnemonics, visual triggers, and (more or less) real-world application. Amid goofy graphics and hockey-playing cartoon characters, the Deviants cover a wide range of topics, including generation of sales, marketing processes, sources of information, audience targeting, pricing strategy, product placement, and objectives of promotion. And they'll make it fun, by gum, or they'll die trying.

The lively (some might say silly) examples used in this video successfully ground the abstract concepts of marketing. The video's imaginary scenarios, complete with invented products and entrepreneurs, allow for traceable complications and supply a format for testing solutions. In between examples, the Deviants break down ideas into their parts, paraphrase formal terms, recast concepts in varying contexts, and review material regularly.

The wacky antics and quick, flashy production of Marketing may irk a too-sophisticated audience. But as an accessible, energetic presentation, it gives you exactly what you need to grasp the basics. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Video!
I am an instructor at a community college, and this video allowed me to show parts of the video relating to what we were discussing that week. It is a great extra to lectures. I would recommand anyone who wants to know the basics of marketing, to purchase this video-funny and light, I and my students enjoyed it. I will use this video for many semesters to come!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with college students as a class review of material.
The Reasonably Priced World of Marketing was a big hit with students enrolled in their sophomore year at the American College of Management and Technology. It was a fun, effective way to review for the mid-term and final exams in my Principles of Marketing class. My usually picky students found themselves laughing and learning through concepts reinforced by cool graphics and amusing dialogue. At the end of the quarter, I had trouble locating the tape and I believe an enthusiatic student now has it for their private collection. I got on-line to reorder another one for next year but this time I'll keep it under lock and key. ... Read more

In Diet for a New America, John Robbins, son of the founder of the Baskin-Robbins ice-cream empire, presents his theories about how an animal-based diet is killing Americans. Abandoning the wealthy lifestyle of his family, Robbins lived in a log cabin while subsisting on a simple diet of grains, and he eventually realized his calling as a dietary evangelist. He is not without a sense of humor; at one point he describes how he broke with his family by "walking away from our ice-cream-cone-shaped swimming pool." But Robbins takes his mission seriously, buttressing his strong opinions about how America must reform its diet with commentary from physicians and academics, including some experts from Cornell University who appear on camera. Robbins himself visits farms where pigs, cattle, and chicken are raised in hellish conditions to make the point that modern meat production is inhumane. Much of this video comes across as being commonsense dietary advice, though some of the more extreme statements by experts are no doubt debatable. And there's no denying that footage of heart surgeries and animals cramped into filthy cages could serve as strong reinforcement to those seeking a healthier diet. --Robert J. McNamara ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A revolution in thought
John Robbins did a wonderful job. This book is a revealing, and convincing look into something we intentionally don't give much thought to.

I was recommended this book [indirectly] from Russ Rankin, he referred to it as the book that changed his life. It is easy to see why. After reading this book you will no longer look at things the same way. It is a revolution of thought and perspective and a book we all owe it to ourselves to read.

I could critique details or go into what it's about, but I think it would cheapen the flow and arguement of the book itself. Regardless of who you are now, or who you are when you finish the book. You'll be better off that you read it.

Don't read nitpicky reviews, this is not a waste of time...I assure you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book I have ever read
A dear friend gave me the video that was made of this book 5 years ago.He told me it would change my life.Naturally, I was too afraid to watch, until last month. Now I am reading the book is well.I was an immediate convert to veganism, as are my two young boys (they didn't really have a choice anyway!).I can't even look at meat without wanting to be sick.Thank you, John Robbins, for saving my health, and the health of my family!(I've also lost 20 pounds by switching to a vegan diet, if that helps anyone).I cannot express how life changing this book really is, how inspiring, frightening, and catalytic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The reason I went vegan(and have stayed vegan)
My husband was in his early 30s 4 years ago when the doctor told him he had to go on high blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medications. As a Registered Nurse with a public health background, I went to the Internet to find out all I could about non-medical ways to improve his health.I found a lot on the effects of diet and decided that we should curtail meat and dairy. Then I got this book.I read the book in 2 sittings - it is as gripping as it is reavealing about something that we all should understand, but don't - our food. The day after finishing the book we discarded all dairy, meat, fish, egg products from our kitchen and thus, started on the path to a plant based diet. The book's greatest achievement is getting readers to understand that what we choose to eat has greater effects than just satiating our taste buds. When we make good choices, we positively effect our health and well-being, the environment, animal welfare, world hunger, and health care costs. When we make bad choices (anything animal based), we do the exact oppostite. If you have health problems, or are just looking to have a postive impact in the world, this book is for you.A powerful, empowering book - get it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Old, but not really outdated, this book will make you think about what you put in your mouth.

Although it may not convince you to go vegan, it will inform you of the personal and environmental consequences of choosing to consume heedlessly. It will encourage mindful eating. It might also gross you out a bit.

I think some of the language is a bit inflammatory for my tastes, but I happen to agree with much of it, so I was almost able to overlook it. Read it for yourself and judge.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is not about being vegetarian
People think this book is about vegetarian and why you should be one. This book talks about our choices in our diet and how they affect our planet. He talks about humane, heathlier ways we can choose our food, including meat products. He mentions several examples if you must eat meat.

This book is about being aware of our choices, aware of what we don't know and what they don't tell us.Also is not about being a vegetarian or vegan, but about making the best choices we can for our planet. Is better to do some changes, than none at all.No one is perfect in this world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No more dreading temper tantrums
Dear Amazon,
I posted a review 2 days ago then realized that I made a mistake.

It should read:

After having so much success with the Happiest Baby on the Block calming techniques, I could not wait to watch The Happiest Toddler on the Block by Harvey Karp,M.D.

My 22 month old grandson began to scream when I told him it was time to go inside. I spoke "toddlerese" with much expression as suggested by Dr. Karp.
I said, " No No No" you do not want to go inside.
He looked at me very surprised.
I said, "No No No" you do not want to go inside.
He looked at me again with his mouth wide open.
I said again, "No No No you do not want to go inside, but we must take sister to potty."

---------he came with me without protest. In the past he would have continued screaming for about 5 minutes and
I would have picked him up kicking and screaming.

Now I can't wait to read the book The Happiest Toddler on the Block to get more helpful suggestions for the children in my family and in my practice.

Phyllis Meer,RN, BSN,CPNP
and proud grandmother of 4.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, but buy the book too!
The DVD is a great compliment to the book. It's so helpful to see Dr. Karp's techniques in action. However, if you haven't read the book, I think the DVD may leave you with many questions because it doesn't go into nearly as much detail as the book does. So my advice is to buy the book too!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best DVD of the decade.
The more you watch it the more sense it makes. We have three boys ages 3, 3, and 6. As you begin to put the techniques into practice you observe the change in your child almost right away. At first it feels odd but with practice all these techniques become second nature. The gossiping works like a charm on kids almost any age. The todler-eze helps toddlers as well as older kids to come out of the impasse and save face. Feeding the meter and other delightful and simple methods all contribute to the child's well being and makes the parent/ child relationship richer and a stronger bond, for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am now the Happiest Parent
Excellent and refreshing way of looking at the world from how a toddler see's it and then how we as parents can effectively communicate in that toddler world. The fast food repeating technique was especially helpful. My son responded to it immediately, it's not a cure all but very helpful. Also enjoyable to watch, not boring at all which sometime these things can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Parenting Advice
This DVD is not only informative, it's entertaining as well. The message (using "toddlerese" to connect with your child) was consistently relayed, cohesive and universally appealing. We watched real parents dealing with VERY real kids in the kinds of situations we all experience (fighting over toys, going to bed, etc etc). Frankly, I think this DVD should be packaged with Dr. Karp's book "Happiest Toddler on the Block," as it's imperative to watch and know exactly how to use the method (and to do it without feeling as if you're "teasing" or speaking down to your child). My husband and I have both watched it and are following Dr. Karp's method. Are we happy? You bet. Our 2-year-old's tantrums have gone down at least 75% (both frequency and duration). ... Read more

This entry in the Really Wild Animals series is a fast-paced introduction to animals' hidden defenses. Spin, an animated globe voiced by Dudley Moore, sets the scene by assigning the viewer a secret mission--to find and examine the hidden weapons of animals.

Spin leads his young detectives on an exploration of eight categories of secret weapons: bluffing, changing shape, smell, athlete's feet, the spurt that hurts, frog skin, poison-tipped harpoon, and venom. Well-chosen examples include the fake eyes of the owl butterfly, the scent glands of the skunk, and the tomato frog's ability to stretch its skin and ooze an oil that can glue a snake's jaws shut for two days.

Interspersed between animal segments are comical interludes including tongue-in-cheek advertisements such as the one suggesting that "Uncle Spin wants you to join the ant brigade," and entertaining music videos.

Spin examines islands in the second half of the video--specifically, unique island ecosystems that have formed as a result of geographic isolation. Informative segments on the lemurs of Madagascar, the iguanas of the Galapagos Islands, and other island-specific anomalies alternate with comic "commercials" about the "amazing ecosystem" and an "emergency broadcast system" test for determining if you're a marsupial.

Beautiful nature photography, a wealth of information, and comic relief abound in this 47-minute video that will have both kids and adults engrossed throughout repeated screenings. --Tami Horiuchi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These videos saved my life
I was struggling through a statistics class with a teacher who can barely speak English. These videos totally saved me. They are easy to understand and cover all the important topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally extra work in probability
a great tool for understanding probability which is why we got this tape. very good

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I use this for my undergraduate Statistics class. It is an excellent resource. Not only is it easy to understand and well organized but it is sooo corny that the students howl with laughter. I have no recollection of ever laughing in a statistics class.

5-0 out of 5 stars There are lies, damn lies, and Statistics
Statistics is a part of everyday life -- whether we like it or not. Baseball, for example, is all about statistics: batting average, earned run average, on base percentage, etc.

The problem is that we have learned statistics through drudgery. Fortunately, we now have an alternative means to effectively learn about statistics -- these tapes.

Mind you, SD parts 1, 2, and 3 will not make you a full-blooded statistician -- meaning you will not have to learn ponderous mathematical equations to calculate some statistic. Instead, this tape does one better. It teaches you how to understand statistics. Believe me, after viewing this tape, you will not look at a statistical table, chart, or graph quite the same way again. You will become a "pseudo-statistican's" worst nightmare -- someone who can actually "parle statistique," and know when statistics are being used to skew / distort the data / facts.

The actual calculations are not that important anymore. Any electronic spreadsheet application worth its salt can now calculate a complicated equation in a micro-minute. The important element in statistical reserach is how to apply the statistical tool correctly, and understanding what that statistic means. These tapes allow you to do just that.

Highly recommended for the student of statistics, and for managers (so they can have a general knowledge of statistics). I also recommend these tapes for those involved in Total Quality Management, developing method and process improvements, and for those involved in operations research. ... Read more

The ties between domestic cats and dogs and their wild counterparts are what bind these two programs on one video. To learn why Fido fights and puppies play, Spin--the animated planet guide voiced by Dudley Moore--introduces viewers to wolves, coyotes, African wild dogs, and a bat-eared fox. When Spin isn't drawing comparisons between pet dogs and their ancestors, viewers are treated to specially written pop songs such as "Hey Dog," in which dogs howl the chorus. There's a moving segment featuring a working dog's relationship with the disabled boy he assists. Cats get similar treatment (minus the part about helping people) with Tabby's hunting, clawing, and rubbing habits compared to those of lions, tigers, and other big cats. There are the usual jokes about who owns whom when it comes to the pet cat, and the unavoidable footage of African cats turning wildebeest into breakfast. Gore is kept to a minimum, making this 44-minute installment of the National Geographic kid series appropriate for animal lovers from preschool on up. --Kimberly Heinrichs ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Major disappointment
A major disappointment. Geared towards adolescent boys, with attention spans of moths. Unsuitable for younger children. Frames rush by so fast one can barely register what is on the sceen, boring, and violent (at least two scenes of wild dogs eating smaller animals.) No depictions of nature's gentle, funny side. My four year old daughter and I hated it. Don't waste your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars keep looking
if you are trying to find a good dog/cat video for your pre-schooler. I expected a tape showing a variety of dog/cat breeds or dog/cats playing with each other which (would have) interested my 3 year old. However, the tape is more about animal behavior with annoying segments designed to catch wandering attentions. A regular National Geographic tape for "grown-ups" would have probably worked just fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cats and Dogs everywhere!
I bought this video for my one-year-old who just loves cats and dogs. She goes nuts when she sees them in our neighborhood or on TV. This video has plenty of dogs (and wolves) and cats (and tigers) for her to look at. The music video montages are fun. There are a few preditor/prey "situations" during the video, but there is nothing gory. I guess it will help explain "life" when she's older!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best, for dogs lover

Monstrously murky sea creatures, bird-eating spiders, killer frogs, slithering snakes. These are just a few of the creepy critters that are bound to mesmerize child and adult viewers. While trying to debunk the very notion of scary animals--they're only spooky because you don't know enough about them, the comforting narrator assures--the accompanying footage won't do much to calm your fears. But the kids will dig it, from learning about basking sharks--those "finely honed killing machines" that usually only attack humans when provoked--to viewing a swarm of army ants or vampire bats. One of the better videos in the Amazing Animals series, this one is for all ages, except the very little ones, who might experience true fear at some of the segments that feature animated host Henry the lizard in eye-popping situations meant to poke fun at fear. --Valerie J. 2-0 out of 5 stars Ok for the first semester....where's the rest?
Covers the theory and mechanisms well enough to be an introduction and quick review, and helps when all the textbook seems to be doing is put you to sleep. However it only covers (and perhaps this is only true at this university, although I doubt it) the first semester of orgo. It covers alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes well, but barely (if it all for some of them, and even when it does, does not cover enough reactions) covers the second semester topics like carboxylic acids, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, phenols, amides, esters, etc which tend to be the parts of the course where people are more likely to see their grades fall. Might be ok if there were a volume 4, 5, and 6 on the way to supplement.

4-0 out of 5 stars NEVER KNEW LEARNING COULD B SO FUN!
THOUGH THE COVERAGE DID NOT NEARLY COVER ALL D TOPICS IN ORGANIC 2, THEY DID MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR ORGANIC 1. I TOOK THE COURSE THE VIDEOS ARE SIMPLY THE BEST INVESTMENT I HAVE MADE EDUCATIONALLY IN A LITTLE WHILE- PROFESSOR+, AT YOUR HOME. REVIEW THEM 2-3X
AND TAKE THE COURSE. U WILL NOT ONLY ACE THE DREADED ORGO. U WILL BE WELL ROUNDED AND PREP. TO TAKE UP GREATER CHALLENGES IN ADVANCE CHEMISTRY- U WILL KNOW THIS STUFF. AT THE END OF THE DAY THIS IS WHAT MATTERS. I NEVER KNEW TEACHING COULD BE SO FUN!

2-0 out of 5 stars Well done but very limited coverage
These tapes cover less than the first month of the first semester of a standard organic chemistry sequence. The coverage is shallow and schematic but accurate. The excellent production ultimately fails to transcend the dullness of the almost unavoidable rote memorization approach to introductory organic chemistry. Of very limited use to students, and no use to those seeking a quick review of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Organic Chemistry made Simple
These tapes are Entertaining as well as Simple, Clear, and to the Point. I thought these tapes were very helpful for anyone wanting to understand more about organic chemistry. I'm a chemist and I intend to share this and other tapes published by the Standard Deviants with my technicians at work to help them better understand their work in the laboratory!!
