I bought this movie because I'm a bit of a Street Fighter fan (keeping and often playing the Dreamcast Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter 3 series in my videogame collection; played then-new Street Fighter II arcade when in college); but I must fairly criticize it because I'm not a prejudiced fan. This American version DVD is like a big old American muscle car, a simply silly, nonsensical machine by current standards but one which packs a serious punch when the loud pedal is pressed. This movie has a disorganized, sub-amateur storyline; excessively forced and lengthy dramatic character exposition; and even in some areas subpar animation. But it does excel when the fighting happens (unfortunately between stretches of awful, token character development). Highlights are few but notable, such as Ryu v. Sagat, Chun-Li v. Vega, Fei Long v. Ryu. It is for occassional views of these sequences that I keep this movie on hand. But when I look at my DVD collection (Bugsy, LA Confidential, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, errr Street Fighter II), this one is always close to a trade.
By the way, for those that have kids that like anime but don't want them to see all that, there is an edited version of this same film available but I think its only on VHS. ... Read more | |

Hearts in Ice is a beautiful, action-packed, sailor-stuffed movie that will make you cry. For an animated movie, the love story in "Hearts" is as intense as one in any German opera or Russian novel. And, the one struck by Cupid's arrow is not one of our schoolgirls or their chums - it is little Luna. Every senshi is in this movie, with the exception of Sailor Saturn. We get to see them all work together, ALL their gorgeous transformations, and ALL their attacks. The climatic battle where they all unite is amazing, and had to be saved for a film: it is too cinematic for a thirty-minute TV episode. The lameness of the villian and her annoying henchmen can be overlooked because of the crisp and gorgeous animation and the skilled voice talents. The winter setting is a refreshing change from the perpetual spring/summer of the series. I do not feel I have missed out by watching the dubbed, edited version. I own a variety of both sub and dub, cut and uncut SM, so I know what I am saying when I feel nothing has been compromised here. Finally, this movie is not a short one like SM R. It is a full-length feature, so you will get your money's worth, even if you pay list price.

"An Uncharmed Life" - Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury are called to the local temple where busloads of girls keep disappearing. Amidst the excitement, temple-worker Raye is discovered to be Sailor Mars! "Nightmare in Dreamland" - The Scouts investigate a strange new themepark where people keep disappearing. Despite dragging a little bit in the middle this movie has high paced action mixed in with great directing calls by Masami Obari. With a plot worthy of a Greek Tragedy, Terry Bogard yet again struggles with both the finding of a new love and the struggling question of why he fights. Is it because he knows no other life or because he protects those around him? Subtle innuendos like that run through the movie and help to make it what it is. A story of four incredible fighters in a quest to help a complete stranger save her brothers' life and quite possibly his soul. High paced figths, well thought plot, and well designed characters both good guy and bad guy alike, this is well worth adding to your video collection.
The story is that Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, and Mai get recruited by this frightend girl Sulia to stop her Brother Lalcorn from gathering the armor of Goddamous, and ancient God back in the Days of Alexander the Great. Throughout the movie they search for clues as other Warriors get taken out in the meantime. Eventually the four of the Square off against Lalcorn and his Henchmen in an action packed finally. This movie did what hollywood could not, capture the essence of the video game inside the movie and create an incredible story around it. To date from my personal viewing the only other Anime series to date that has done this task was Street Fighter 2V. If you are just getting into Anime, or an Action Anime fan than this is a title to check into.

Menu's: B+ Video: B+ The disc quality isn't very good, that's why the audio and video quality aren't very good. The content is a B because the menu's arent taht good, and the actual video is mpstly all you get, minus a Pioneer (Geneon) interactive menu where you can see upcoming titles. The menuing isn't very good, it's too basic. Although, I wish they could have digitally remastered this movie. It would bring up the grade a lot. Also the translations... most of the time they were accurate, but sometimes most lines are very off. (Examples coming soon).

The banter among the characters was still good, and there were some good lines, and the potential was still there, but it just wasn't fully realized this time. Unfortunately, that's what sometimes happens in a series, the middle episodes sometimes start to bog down the series as the writers struggle to keep the storylines fresh. Still, there is hope, and I'm optimistic about seeing the next episodes, and hoping that they can pick the pace back up. The first story on this tape, while having a slight charm, doesn't really explain enough about what's going on. Some cat like spirit, we are told, is possessing stuffed animals, and slowly destroying a town, although not maliciously. How or where this spirit came from is never explained, and what was going to happen, and where it was going to finally end up was just too much of a dead giveaway. I had it figured out about ten minutes into the episode, which really isn't a good thing. The second episode was a bit better, at least it finally explained just how the trio managed to end up in this parallel world where magic and elves exist. I thought it got just a little too mean spirited though, where the elf is set afloat down the river, tied naked to a log. That's only my opinion though, you may want to check the video out and see for yourself. Still, I look forward to the next volume, and hope that the lightheartedness of the earlier episodes comes back.
