Set in an alternate 1920's earth, where airships rule the skies and entire continents can fly, Castle in the Sky is the story of two orphans who meet by chance. A young girl, Sheeta (Anna Paquin), floats literally from the sky after narrowly escaping capture from a band of pirates, wearing a mysterious glowing necklace. She is caught by Pazu (James Van Der Beek), a brave and resourceful young assistant engineer, who notices that the crystal she wears has fantastic magical properties. It is this crystal that several suspicious parties are trying desperately to get their hands on, including the Dola Pirate Gang, and the Army, led by the nefarious Colonel Muska (Mark Hammil). It soon becomes clear that the real prize in this race is the ancient, supposedly mythical, floating island of Laputa. What follows is a grand chase towards the Caste in the Sky, with captures, narrow escapes, air battles, and more. Miyazaki's love of flight is more than apparent at the way the action soars, moving easily from land to air, and the pace of the movie, though the film runs over two hours, only lets up when and for as long as it needs to. Miyazaki showed in both The Castle of Cagliostro and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind that he has a talent for making rousing adventure movies, and, though Castle has some of the ecological messages found in Nausicaa (and later, in Princess Mononoke), they always take a backseat to the events that drive the movie. The characters here are a varied, strange, and incredibly fun lot. The Dola Pirates are always entertaining when their banter flys, Mark Hammil has a blast as the scheming villian, and Pazu and Sheeta are two of the cutest leads you could ask for. They're also a refreshing taste from the "ordinary" in the anime genre. Sheeta is more than capable of handling herself, and Pazu is a cheerful idealist, a nice break from the surly teenage leads that overpopulate anime. In addition, their relationship is wonderfully done; it's the simplest, most pure form of love imaginable, that neither tries to be romantic or plutonic, but is just shown as it is. There is never a single kiss on screen, but the audience knows, through the body language and the words in their moments together that these two will be together one way or another for life. And even though this is one of Miyazaki's earlier films, the animation is still fairly impressive. Of course, it looks a little dated next to the likes of Spirited Away, but it still looks and feels like a wonder. The character designs are Miyazaki's usual simplistic but expressionistic fare, and the vehicles that populate the world are imaginative and plausible, and the architecture has a surprising amount of variety. The real treasure on this DVD release is the completely redone musical score on the English Language version of the film. Back in the mid-'80's, Studio Ghibli was not nearly the powerhouse it is today, and consequently, composer Joe Hisaishi was at times forced to put his rather sparse score on sythesizers and such. However, the new score contains everything from the original release, and a heck of a lot more, all done in beatiful orchestral renditions. And as for actual quality of music, the score for Castle in the Sky easily holds its own against Mononoke in terms of quality and power. Of course, you have to watch the english dub of the movie to hear this, but having said that, it's not a bad job, arguably superior to Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service in terms of the actor's performances. Cloris Leachman is hilarious as Dola, Paquin does a fine job of Sheeta, and even Van Der Beek manages to be only marginally annoying. And really, how can you not like Mark Hammill? Overall, Castle in the Sky is one of Miyazaki's best films, showcasing some of the most imagination, colorful characters, and dazzling adventure, it also carries some fairly powerful emotions. It also looks great, even after eighteen years, and is simply a great deal of fun to watch.
"Castle in the Sky" is by Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who I've come to believe is one of the most masterful storytellers alive today, and maybe of all time. It begins with a young girl, Sheeta, drifting down from the sky into the arms of a young miner named Pazu. From there begins an incredible adventure as these two search for answers to the girl's origins while running from both air pirates as well as mysterious agents. I don't intend to reveal much of the plot here, but suffice it to say, this movie reignited the feelings I used to have as a child when watching such classics as "The Wizard of Oz" and the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (which I also just recently purchased on DVD. The movie was created several years ago, but was recently brought to America, with a wonderful redubbing into English, thanks to Disney Studios. If you're looking for visuals like the mind-blowing, computer simulations in recent Disney hits such as "Finding Nemo", this isn't it. However, if you're a fan of traditional cel animation, this film may be one of the best ever produced. Miyazaki's attention to detail, his ability to bring these two dimensional characters to life, is awe-inspiring. For me, the greatest thing about this movie is that it's reminded me of the kind of fictional magic I hope to create myself one day, and makes me wonder if it's too late in my life for me to become an animator. The bad thing about seeing a movie like this, is that I know that I could never produce anything nearly as beautiful. Fortunately for me, if I ever get the opportunity, I'm just stubborn, determined, and delusional enough to give it a shot anyway.
The story opens with an action sequence without any explanation about what is happening. This causes us to focus our attention and to try and figure out what is going on and what all these strange people and machines are. In some ways it seems like a 1930s serial, in others futuristic, and in others ancient myth without connection to the world in which we live. While this isn't as beautiful as "Spirited Away" or even "Princess Mononoke", it is still head and shoulders above nearly everything you see passing as an animated movie nowadays (with a couple of exceptions). My kids encouraged me to get this DVD and they enjoyed it immensely. I expected to like it, but enjoyed it more than I expected. Miyazaki has a unique imagination and has a powerful ability to use his wonderful images to tell the story in delightful and beautiful ways that go beyond conventional live action movies - no matter the special effects budget - or even most animation. Watching his stories is a special experience that I am grateful to him for sharing with me.

Imagine City of Lost Children, blended with a bit of the Popeye movie and Peewee's playhouse... it's absorbing and complex, taking you to worlds within worlds. And the soundtrack... noises, pings, music and mutterings, the soundtrack could stand on its own as an atmospheric soundscape. Why is this movie not known? See it.
Rather than listening to dialogue, you must use your eyes to "hear" what is going on. Several friends went along with me to see this at college, and they were strangely satisfied when I described it as a portrayal of Tom Thumb as a pawn (or son of) God sent to quietly liberate a hopelessly degraded and lost humanity. In this world, science has imprisoned God, and Tom is there to liberate him. While the film was quiet (virtually no dialogue), my mind was alive with thoughts; this experience is truly a refreshing one.
I give it two stars because it's interesting on a technical level and intriguing on a "What were these guys smoking?" level, but still unwatchable. This movie is truly for people with no taste--people who only like weird things for the sake of their being weird--people who quote philosophers they don't understand, or laugh at jokes they never even got. If Tron had no story whatsoever, I would give it a 4-star review based on technical merit alone, and that's why I give Tom Thumb two. The movie won several obscure awards. It opens up with beautiful claymation full of vivid colors, and a really cool Huxley reference. Babies in jars, a fly that perches on some machinery above a conveyer, then gets its head cut off in a gear and contaminates a jar. Things were looking really good. Then 75 seconds in we fade to the title, and things go downhill FAST. There are a couple real people slowed down to the jerky framerate of the claymation. There is no dialogue, just grunting. There is just no plot whatsoever. Tom is cast out and wanders around some unepxlained places, some sort of factory, wherever... grunting at the things he sees. It's downright painful. His mother dies. He wanders around some more. His father dies. More wandering. I made a big effort. I tried to give it a chance. I watched the first 40 minutes with a friend (we're both big digital animation fans), and that was hard work. This is the only movie I own that I could not sit through the whole thing. Take The Nightmare Before Christmas, remove the plot and all but one unsightly character, make it jerky enough to give you a headache, and you have Tom Thumb. There is a short film on the DVD called "The Saint Inspector," which is mostly just an obease clay man atop a pole being poked and prodded by a thing with a collapsing telescope for a head. That was at least entertaining, but it still managed to be slow and dull, while only four minutes long. The Tom Thumb feature is 70 excrutiating minutes. I've got nothing against weird or low-budget flicks. My friends look at my 100 DVD's and say, "Man, why do you have so much dumb stuff?" Maybe my idea of good offbeat movies is a little mainstream... Being John Malkovich, Dr. Strangelove, Run Lola Run, Taxi Driver, Tree's Lounge, every Kevin Smith / Tarantino film, staples of anime like Wicked City... I even get a kick out of lame stuff like Dolomite, Shock Corridor, Rocky Horror and Chesty Morgan flicks. ... Read more | |

Despite dragging a little bit in the middle this movie has high paced action mixed in with great directing calls by Masami Obari. With a plot worthy of a Greek Tragedy, Terry Bogard yet again struggles with both the finding of a new love and the struggling question of why he fights. Is it because he knows no other life or because he protects those around him? Subtle innuendos like that run through the movie and help to make it what it is. A story of four incredible fighters in a quest to help a complete stranger save her brothers' life and quite possibly his soul. High paced figths, well thought plot, and well designed characters both good guy and bad guy alike, this is well worth adding to your video collection.
The story is that Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, and Mai get recruited by this frightend girl Sulia to stop her Brother Lalcorn from gathering the armor of Goddamous, and ancient God back in the Days of Alexander the Great. Throughout the movie they search for clues as other Warriors get taken out in the meantime. Eventually the four of the Square off against Lalcorn and his Henchmen in an action packed finally. This movie did what hollywood could not, capture the essence of the video game inside the movie and create an incredible story around it. To date from my personal viewing the only other Anime series to date that has done this task was Street Fighter 2V. If you are just getting into Anime, or an Action Anime fan than this is a title to check into.

Genesis of Evil, is just beautiful. If you're not misty when you see it the first time you'd best check your pulse. It's good that so much of it takes place in Ken's mind, so the dubbers can get him to say anything they want. It was treated very well. I saw the Japanese counterpart, and I actually like the dub better. In the dub, as young Ken approaches the Dark Ocean of evil, we hear echoes of the Digimon Emperer himself, veyr eerie, very cool. This is not in the original Japanese. This is a very powerful episode. I used it to get my buddy hooked on Digimon. ^_^ Ken being so cute helped too.
Read this and then go look at pokemon DVD's and VHS

However, I'm pleased to say that this film is generally much better than the first Pokemon movie. The plot involves a Pokemon collector called Laurence III who wants to capture the three Legendary birds Articuno. Zapdos and Moltres - or the Gods of Ice, Lightning and Fire as they're called here. Unfortunately, this creates a huge problem with Earth's weather patterns, causing violent storms and snow, and it is left up to Ash to get them back, and return things to normal. There are some little hints to the possibility of an Ash/Misty romance in this film - when Ash arrives on the island at the beginning of the movie, a girl called Melody kisses Ash on the cheek which makes Misty really jealous, as well as some other cute moments. Sadly, in spite of an improved plot I believe that, as before, the choice of music stands out as the film`s downfall and the producers haven`t learnt from the mistakes they made in the first film. Apart from a few exceptions ("The Legend Comes To Life" is a wonderful track), this movie replicates the same pop-styled rubbish used in the First Movie. The remix of the TV theme song ("Pokemon World" performed by Youngstown & Nobody's Angel) is absolutely horrible, with a scratchy beat and synthesized vocals. The campaign to ban vocoders starts here... Next time round, I would like to see a better choice of music which is less pop-orientated, but I`m not holding my breath... Overall though, in spite of the terrible soundtrack, this is a major improvement on the First Movie which I think any Pokemon fan should add to their collection.
Pros: NONE Cons:

Robotnik has Sonic and Tails head for Robotropolis to stop the Robot Generator from exploding. The duo, along with Knuckles, save the day, but it was a set-up just to capture Sonic's data for the all-new HyperMetalSonic. And Robuttnik is planning to destroy the Earth of the Sky! HyperMetalSonic is not "never-before-seen" as the cover dictates. Metal Sonic was directly from the 1993 Sonic CD game. He also appeared in Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic R, and a few issues of the Archie comic books (#25, to be exact, and two upcoming issues). Sonic would definitely have needed 50 Magic Rings and seven Chaos Emeralds, but this film makes no mention to the Rings or Emeralds. The videogame Sara loses to Robumnik is reminiscent of "Sonic the Fighters", an arcade-style fighting game that never came out on Saturn. Viewers will notice Buttnik's robots fanning the President and washing the windows. Overall, this is a great movie, and it had Knuckles, whose only other animated appearance was in an episode of the new "Sonic Underground".
