For those of you who like ANTZ, consider this: Pixar was already roughly two years into development on "Bug's Life" when Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney for Dreamworks. Obviously he took many of the ideas with him to create ANTZ (wonder why Disney's "Armageddon" is similar to Dreamwork's "Deep Impact" -- and why both were released around the same time? Same reason.) So PIXAR gets an extra PLUS for originality.
The picture quality if superb, if not the best I've seen, for an animated DVD due to the direct digital to DVD transfer. In full screen mode, you will be amazed how clean and delineated the picture is; the detail is incredible! My big surprise was how amazing the sound is on this disc. You can use this to show off your Dolby Digital sound system to friends just as well as any action film. The surround effects are crisp and the bass is well defined. My only complaint would probably be that the action and sound is so non-stop, that it can tire out adults, albeit mesmerizing children the whole time. The extras are plenitiful and well done. The inclusion of the end-title outtakes is the highlight of a wonderful special edition disc you're sure to enjoy.
This innovative take on the old fable "The Ant and the Grasshopper" teaches us a few important lessons: 1. There's a clumsy nerd who wants to be a hero in every colony To maintain good family relations, you should allow your kids to watch this movie too. Amanda Richards July 13, 2004
Essentially, a mild and nerdy ant known as Flic accidentally destroys the entire food supply of his ant colony. Of course, the food was not for them; it was their yearly offering to the grasshoppers. As a result, the grasshoppers decree that the ants can spend the remainder of summer gathering it all again. Hopper, the ingenius and menacing leader, notes that Flic stands up to him for one brief moment, and this becomes pivotal later. I won't say any more past there, only that there are plenty of intriguing twists to keep things interesting. Overall, this movie bears an obvious resemblance to Finding Nemo. First of all, both movies involve the creation and manipulation of a natural environment and its inhabitants. Second, they both involve unlikely heroes (A bumbling ant and a fearful clownfish). Third, both are at a standard of quality that the animation world has never before seen. Honestly, Kevin Spacey's portrayal of Hopper is reason enough to see A Bug's Life. (I could say the same thing about Albert Brooks' portrayal of Marlin in Finding Nemo.) However, the movie offers much more in the long run, and the special features are deep and surprisingly un-boring. The director's commentary of this movie and other Pixar films is much, much more entertaining than most movies. I credit a lot of that to Andrew Stanton, but the guys just have a creative knack to them that makes their ideas and comments brilliant. Recommended to all fans of animation, all lovers of Pixar, and all those with good taste. ... Read more

On the other hand, what I wouldn't like is the politically correct editing that started appearing in WB cartoon anthologies released after this one. For that alone, I despair of ever seeing this released in its original form again. In a post-Columbine world, I suppose such temerity is to be expected, but it's simply wrong to butcher such masterpieces of the animators' art. But enough about that... This is, to me the definitive WB cartoons. The only thing that could have improved it was more of the same, plus some other often overlooked characters such as the 3 bears. I've always been a huge fan of the late Chuck Jones and his Roadrunner cartoons in particular. This video has (almost?) all of them, grouped to run sequentially. As previously noted, some of the cartoons included here are on other WB collections, where their questionable editing for content is quite evident. If you're an adult who can realize that when Wile E. Coyote falls 2000 feet, followed by an anvil, what's on display are Chuck Jones' artistry and comic genius rather than anything remotely related to reality, the you're in the target demographic. Let's face it, these cartoons with their somewhat dated references don't belong to the Columbine generation, they belong to us old-timers who grew up with them - and we deserve to be able to see them. And that, succinctly, is what this is - the best of the best, without a post-modern social conscience.
DUCK AMUCK-- An absolute classic! One of the best cartoons ever made! And that's HIGH praise! WHAT'S OPERA DOC?-- Just as good! One of Bugs Bunny's finest performances, not to mention Elmer Fudd's! DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24TH 1/2 CENTURY-- This is so funny, every second of it has you laughing at something else, if it doesn't than your still laughing at the last gag! Cartoon Network made a TV show about Duck Dodgers and it's really funny but not close to being as funny as this! HARE-WAY TO THE STARS-- One of Marvin the Martian's funniest performance. It is topped by DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24TH 1/2 CENTURY but Daffy provides most of the laughs in THAT one. ALI BABA BUNNY-- Every cartoon in this is funny! And this one is no exception. It is FUNNY!!!!!! ROBIN HOOD DAFFY-- "I'm Robin Hood, and I'm very good at avoiding the sherrif's eye!" Or so Daffy says. But Porky Pig is not convinced that he's who he says he is. This biggest hoot is the gag where Daffy is swinging down to the Sherrif and planning to steal his gold, but he bumps into every tree there. Another one of the best parts is the end. Not to mention all the Road Runner cartoons in it!

It combines stellar graphics (singing and dancing gourds), excellent Christian messages (Good Samaritan story and acceptance), and good, clean fun that both children and adults will enjoy. The Story of Flibber-o-loo tells the Good Samaritan story with a twist or two along the way. You'll be singing along..."I'm busy, busy...terribly busy." However, Star Trek fans will especially enjoy The Gourds Must Be Crazy - an amusing send-up of Star Trek (complete with Scotty as played by a carrot) and a pie shaped starship that strangely resembles the Enterprise. And of course, each episode contains a "Silly Song with Larry" - a non-sensical part of the show that is so dumb it's funny. Fans of Monty Python will recognize some of the humor. Learning Bible stories has never been so much fun!

Amazon.com In the second episode, Blue wants to buy something. Simple counting gamesand a shopping trip to The Present Store make for a solidexploration of numbers. Addition, subtraction, and even fractions are on themenu. --Doug Thomas Reviews (22)
I particularly find the second segment on this tape the more educational. In the first one, everything in the Blue's Clues environment is labled. However, they mainly do not look at the lable but rather just the first letter of an object. Futher, they get into reading comprehension when most kids are still trying understand what they hear when someone reads a story to them. SO I find the first segment a little bit of a loss educationally. The second segment, however, deals with numbers and counting. Everything is counted out- number of ice cubes, blue dollars, steps to the door and so on. Great repetition. I have to admit that Blue's Clues is not my favorite tv show. I find it irritating and do not appreciate the fact that Steve acts so goofy at times. So that may contribute to the lower four rating. However, it's mainly been rated a four due to the first segment being an educational loss in my mind. I like the fact that it has to sections. This is an easy way to limit the tv/videos that my son watches. I only allow him a limited amount of tv/videos a day and this gives it an easy break point for stopping the video and playing with toys. Enjoy.

The plot of the movie is based on the book by Peter S. Beagle(read it if you like fantasy!), but I have to say that I like the movie better. Of course, the author did the screenplay, so that might explain why the movie is so good. It's about a unicorn searching the world for others of her immortal kind. On her journey, she meets humans who help her on her path, like Schmendrick(sp?) the bumbling magician who transforms her into a human woman to carry out her quest, Molly Grue the cynical outlaw, and Prince Lir who becomes a hero for her sake. But some of those she meets, like Mommy Fortuna the witch and King Haggard with his castle by the sea, will try to stop her from solving the mystery of her lost people. Will she be able to hold onto herself long enough overcome the ominous Red Bull who drove the other unicorns down all the roads long ago? Again, I say that this is one of the movies that defined my childhood, one of the things that convinced me I wanted to be a writer and believe in the magic of imagination. This is a great movie for kids, but there's plenty there for an adult to appreciate as well. Buy it and watch it!!! It's worth it.
This particular print has several major defects. First this movie suffers more than most when cutting it from widescreen to full screen. But the pan-and-scan job (the technique used to make a widescreen film fit on a regular television) was also totally botched leaving many scenes showing only half a face or character. There is also many color problems. The print is biased to red. Dark scenes, of which there are many, show a red tint. Related to this is that the greens are subdued. Many objects that should be green show as blue. The print is also grainy showing more video noise than normal. The soundtrack is extremely harsh sounding making it dificult to listen to. I'd recommend you seek out the widescreen version which has none of these problems.

The movie opens with Mulan getting ready to go to the "Matchmaker." Although, she is a beautiful girl, she lacks the grace to make a good impression. Devistated, she returns home. Her father tells her that "like the cherry blossoms, her season has not come." When China is invaded by the Huns, there is one line in the movie that is uttered by the emperor and it is SO profound. The general in charge of the armies confidently announces that his men can handle this invasion. However, the emperor issues a proclamation calling all available men because, "sometimes a single grain of rice may be the deciding balance in tipping the scales." Or - "one man may make a difference between conquest and defeat." In this case, it turns out to be a woman! I LOVE how Mulan interacts horribly with the men at first and how she is told to leave. Mulan has to prove herself and she doesn't give up. Even after she is a hero, Mulan is disgraced when it is discovered that she is a woman. She is shunned and yet when she must come to the rescue of China again, her comrades are loyal to her and listen to her ideas. Throughout the movie there are the different interactions of those who accept women for who they are and those who are stuck within stereotypes. Mulan is a cute and VERY funny movie with adorable songs. What makes it a GREAT movie however, is the very powerful message that we should judge one another on our merits and character - whether we be men or women.

Lucy: What kind of a place is this to be stuck in? We can't even plug our irons in! Speaker: Campers will be up at o 500. Speaker: Race will start at 1800. Marice(in a sack race): Sir, I don't think I was meant to be a potato. Snoopy is funny especially on the motorcycle, carrying Charlie Brown and him saying the classic line"Why can't I have a normal dog like everyone else?". Though the girls steal the funny lines. The whole gang takes place here in this likeable Peanuts adventure.

Firstly, I don't know why loads of people think this film is cheesy. I know Alice isn't for everyone, but when you look at the other films made based on Children's classics by Disney (eg- Jungle Book, Hunchback of Notre Dame), you'll see it's more faithful than those films to the original. However if you have read the books and haven't seen this film, some characters are missing (eg- Duchess, Mock Turtle, Knave of Hearts, White Knight). This may just think that Disney has ruined this classic forever. They haven't. It's the best adaption I've ever seen. Although I actually have the PAL version, I suppose the movie is just the same over in North America. The best bits are the Walrus and the Carpenter, the garden of singing flowers and flamingo croquet. And the Mad Tea Party is still the funniest part of a Disney classic. So buy this movie. Wether it's a video tape or DVD. (I also live near Carroll's birth place!)
This new Masterpiece Edition DVD set brings Alice in Wonderland to a more deserved release than that previous Gold Collection, which brought very little bonus features. The masterpiece edition does bring many more bonuses, and one of my favorites is that "Virtual Wonderland Party", in which children can enjoy a little while in a fantastic tea pary. Really great! This DVD also has the greatest cover art, I love it. 5 stars!
Beautifully adapted and animated from Lewis Carroll's highly imaginative, high-trippin' classic, the imagery and illustrated puns amaze and amuse, especially the little things like the rocking-horse fly, the bread-and-butter flies, the vultures, the pencil and hammer birds, the momeraths, and the bird in the tree (Queenie Leonard) yelling "Ser-pennnnnt !" The animators drew each frame based on the portrayals by the actors voicing the parts, and the stand-outs are Kathryn Beaumont as Alice, Ed Wynn as the Mad Hatter, Verna Felton as the Queen of Hearts, Bill Thompson as the White Rabbit, and the very flexible and versatile J. Pat O'Malley as Tweedle Dum, Tweedle Dee, the Walrus AND the Carpenter, in one of the best scenes in the movie. With fourteen songs, this is the most musical Disney around, but unfortunately, the songs are not very easy to sing along to, making me sound like William Hung every time I try to impress people with my thorough knowledge of the lyrics. There are lots of interesting tidbits in the extras, such as the discarded Cheshire Cat song, and the fact that one of the songs was later re-worded for Peter Pan. There are other links between Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, but you'll have to watch the extras to find out just what, cause I'm not telling. For those who don't want to watch the previews at the beginning of the DVD, just press "Menu" and get plugged directly into Wonderland. Amanda Richards, July 18, 2004

In this story, Little Foot meets another small long neck named Allie. Allie is afraid of other dinosaurs because she has only been among other long necks. As part of a band of migrating long necks, she and her family come into the Great Valley while fleeing their former home, which has become a misty swamp that they now derisively call "The Land of Mists." After their arrival, Grandpa Longneck faill mysteriously ill and the migratory long necks identify his malady and proscribe a cure - a plant that only grows in the Land of Mists. Little Foot wants to go to find the mysterious plant, and he needs Allie's help. Allie refuses, however, to go unless Little Foot's friends do not come along. Herein lies the most positive part of this tale - Allie must get over her fear of other dinosaurs if she is to be of help to Little Foot and the others. She has to learn that accept and work with those who are different from herself. The story resolves, and the children learn valuable lessons. This story also includes a couple of very funny villians who are constantly telling each how worthless they are. These two cracked us up, but their constant bantering and bickering might be a little over the top for very small children. My two laughed and laughed for hours on end. We found that it was important to explain that this behavior is inappropriate and this is why it is funny. This was easily done, since the story shows that these two end up working against each other most of the time and not with each other. I highly recommend this video. There are some tender moments in this video and some great songs. I would however caution parents with very small children, since there are two villians who are not very nice to anyone. My three and five year old really liked it, but for children younger than that, I would exercise caution.
THIS EPISODE WAS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT BECAUSE OF THE MEAN-SPIRITED BANTERING OF THE TWO VILLAINS. The prehistoric crocodile and pterasaur (dinosaur bird) are constantly telling each other how much they "hate" each other. There is a song they sing back and forth about how "I need you like a hold in the head" and that type of thing. And their voices are terribly annoying. I was immediately uncomfortable, but then I heard my son starting to say this stuff to his sister... HEY, I KNOW THE KIDS ARE GOING TO PICK UP MEAN LANGUAGE SOMEWHERE, BUT WHY ENCOURAGE IT? MY ADVICE: LAND BEFORE TIME I-III DO NOT SUFFER FROM THIS LOW LANGUAGE.
