Amazon.com essential video

After the national success of his 11-hour epic, The Civil War--the highest-rated miniseries in public-television history--many wondered if Ken Burns could capture the same energy and passion with smaller subjects. His reply, the 18-hour history of America's greatest sport, Baseball, not only quieted these worries, it also perhaps surpassed his prior achievement. Massive in scope (it covers more than 100 years), exhausting in detail, and filled with celebrities, journalists, politicians, historians, and the men who played the game, Burns's romantic love letter to the game achieves the impossible: even those who hate baseball can't help but become immersed in it. This is because Burns doesn't just detail the great players and the memorable plays and games; he also presents baseball as a cultural and social mirror, reflecting the beauty and hypocrisy of the nation that created it. Divided into nine innings, two hours each in length, the video examines complex social issues such as segregation, racial inequality (its section on Jackie Robinson, baseball's first African American player, should be required school viewing), labor battles between owners and players, politics, technology and gender conflicts, among others. Then, of course, there's fascinating footage and biographies on the players--troubled icons such as Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, heroes such as Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle, and tragic figures such as Pete Rose and Lou Gehrig--the men who, despite a rocky and often hypocritical history, constructed baseball's tradition and preserved its invincibility. --Dave McCoy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A DVD All Baseball Fans Should Own
Ken Burns did his usual outstanding job with this documentary. He tells the story of baseball, using a combination of still photos, videos, interviews and quotes quotes. The DVD includes a bonus disc, which includes several great interviews.

He hits all aspects of the game: The development of the game itself and the leagues, the labor history, the stars and great teams and personalities, the great moments in the history of the game, and so on. He also gives us a pretty good look at the old Negro leagues and we get to hear some of the great stories from those days before MLB was integrated.

The only bad thing I can say about this collection of dvds is that by the time it was over I was really sick of hearing different versions of "Take Me out to the Ballgame."

The great stories in this collection more than make up for that one drawback, however. He does more than just interview and quote the players, managers, umpires, owners and sports writers. He includes stories from fans. Doris Kearns Goodwin told about how she grew up rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers, then after they moved away, she found herself in Boston, becoming a Red Sox fan, just in time to have her heart broken again.

All fans of baseball should see this collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a 'must see' for people who love baseball

4-0 out of 5 stars View it as entertainment, not as history
Ken Burns is becoming well-known as much for what he leaves out of his documentaries as for what he tells you and how he tells it. One sees it somewhat in the Civil War documentary (unless of course you are a Lost Cause devotee, in which case you view that series as horribly biased and riddled with errors), and it is definitely (and troublingly) evident in his Jazz documentary, where 40 years of jazz is virtually glossed over in favor of an almost obsessive fixation on Louis Armstrong. In the case of "Baseball," Burns again leaves out huge chunks of the story, although the end result is nonetheless entertaining.

In the case of "Baseball," the unrelenting focus is on New York City, Babe Ruth & Jackie Robinson, and to be fair, there is no way you could discuss the subject of baseball without devoting a great deal of time to these subjects. However, the title of the documentary is "Baseball," not "The New York City, Babe Ruth, and Jackie Robinson Story," and it is possible to watch this documentary at times and come to believe that nothing else was happening out side of New York most of the time.

I recall reading a Sports Illustrated article a few years ago that discussed the Philadelphia Athletics from 1929-1931, and made the case that that team was better than the famed "Murderer's Row" Yankees of 1926-1928, and possibly the best team in baseball history. The article's author crunched the numbers, compared the stats, and made a pretty compelling case. He then asked why so little attention has been paid to the A's over the years, and posited that because most of the nation's important papers and sportswriters were based in New York City; by default the majority of the great sportswriting was devoted to the Yankees, while relatively backwater Philadelphia languished in obscurity. It seems to be the same situation with Burns. While other incredibly dominant teams such as (in the early years) the Chicago Cubs, the A's, the Pittsburgh Pirates & the Detroit Tigers are given passing mention, they are quickly shoved on the back burner in favor of the Boston Red Sox & New York Giants. Then the Yankees & the Dodgers begin to coalesce, and it is all New York, all the time. One gets no feeling for how dominant the 1929-1931 A's (or the St. Louis Cardinals of the mid-1930's) were, because Burns continually focuses on Babe Ruth & the Negro Leagues.

When Burns gets to the 1950's he can be excused, because really it was a New York-dominated decade like no other. However, the other decades did in fact see a more competitive balance, and one would not get this impression from the documentary.

It would have been nice if Burns hadn't crammed the last quarter century of his story into one "inning." Are you telling me that the stories since 1970 aren't as compelling as the early years of baseball. I don't believe that Burns would have had to devote that much more time to the post-1970 era to make it feel less cursory and rushed. This is a somewhat annoying tendency of his that was more griveously evident when he made "Jazz."

Also, I get a little tired of the "poetry of baseball" school of thought. It isn't as though I am some knuckle-dragging troglodyte who gets all his news from sports radio; I am just as likely to go to the opera as to the ballpark. This baseball as metaphor for how the cosmos works gets on my nerves after a while (although I consider Roger Angell's comment "there's more Met than Yankee in all of us" to be priceless beyond description). It's not that baseball doesn't imbue our life with a little extra something special, it's just that some of these talking heads tend to get a little overwrought.

I enjoyed watching the documentary the first time, and I have watched it probably half a dozen times since over the years. By comparison, I have watched "The Civil War" about 15 times, I would guess. I was so disappointed with "Jazz" that I managed only a second viewing. In any case, "Baseball" is very entertaining, and that is what largely accounts for my 4-star rating I would only caution those who don't know their baseball history that this documentary omits a great deal of what is a very good story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Costas at his best
You don't have to love baseball like I do to enjoy this documentary about Americas pastime. Although I got a little tired of Ken Burns style (I think it's unnecesary to quote someone and THEN state the name of the person being quoted, a Ken Burns trademark) the material is just too great and too American to be disliked. The best part? I was mesmerized by Bob Costas' description of events that took place in the BoSox clubhouse during their 9th inning collapse in game six of the 1986 World Series. When he recollects his "What do I do if they tie it?" remark to his producer it is fascinating, thrilling, and in the end, very sad. Just more proof that baseball is "designed to break your heart". Trust me on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great documentary but what's the deal?
Has anyone noticed that the times given for each "Inning" (i.e., disc) on the DVD is wildly inaccurate? Am I missing material or what? Almost every inning is under two hours according to my DVD player but the case usually indicates a time of 145 to 155 minutes or more. Are there hidden easter eggs on the disc or is PBS just wrong?

4-0 out of 5 stars The history of professional wrestling for this generation.
The WWF has created a box set which not only depicts their history, but also many wrestlers and the sport itself. It is a walk down memory lane for most and a chance for new fans to see how some wrestlers got their start. It would have been nice if the WWF had packaged some type of written manual with the videotape. In it, they could have listed Wrestlemania facts, wrestler biographies, etc. Viewing all of the tapes will take some time due to the 3 hours per tape. It is great to see the classic matches like Steamboat vs. Savage, Hogan vs. Warrior, Micheals vs. Diesel, Austin vs. Hart. It is also nice to see Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, etc. in Wrestlemania matches. It seems anyone in this business has been at least one Wrestlemania. One question for the WWF, was it really necessary to preview those four other tapes and the super bowl commercial in every tape? Nonetheless, the WWF is, was, and shall be sports entertainment at it's finest. While expensive, this collection is recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars WWF Wrestlemania: The Best Event Of The Year 15 Times Over
When you have a chance to own all 14 Wrestlemanias' for less than $10 a tape, you must certainly go for it. I have everyone on tape since it's inception and I can tell you it is well worth every penny. Everyone will enjoy these tapes. I mean if you are a Hulkamaniac, you've got Wrestlemania I - IX containing the Hulkster...If you like HBK, you've got him in his early days with the Rockers and then as he matures into a WWF Champion...If Bret Hart is more to your liking, you have got him as a Tag Team Champ, Intercontinental Champ, and a World Champ all in the set...And for the man who is just like that 'ol Texas Rattlesnake "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, you watch him in his unforgettable feud with Bret Hart and you get to see him achieve the ultimate goal -- the WWF Championship. Pick up these tapes, you're never gonna get a better deal, if you smell what I'm cookin brother.

5-0 out of 5 stars WrestleMania: The Review
While not a big fan of the "WWF Attitude" box set, the bottom line is that A) It's cheaper than the original retail price of the original new releases (check out the original pre-views, hit a rental store, or look at old wrestling magazines for more info if you don't believe, but these tapes cost as much as one PPV TODAY ($39.95 for WM IV alone!). Yes, it's over $100, and almost $200, but divide that cost by 14-15 tapes, and the resulting figure is quite nice. Now, consider buying each tape individually at $10 a tape, or even $8 a tape an compare the difference. I promise it is significant. ESCPECIALLY if you are looking for the Coliseum video version, which can run anywhere from $20-80 each, depending on the seller. There are slight differences and edits in the footage on each different version of WM, but it's always nice to be able to get a collection of items all at one time, and at a discounted price. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of a generation
It doesn't get much better than this! My only complaint is it's not on dvd. But what a great way to recapure all the glory of the Top Wrestling Paperview each year. I grew up on wrestlemania, so for me it's a walk down memeory lane. From the Hulkster to Stone cold, it's all here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best damn box set ever!!!
I have received my Box Set today. I had all the Wrestlemanias but sold them when i knew i was getting this. This Boxset Has Everything from people like Big John Studd to Andre to Hogan to Macho Man, Undertaker, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Austin, the lot!!
The only bad thing is that on My Wrestlemania 5 the pipers Pit segment isnt on and the Wrestlemania 11 countdown isnt shown, but above that it is worth every penny, Go and Buy it now!!! ... Read more

In January of 1999, the world's greatest basketball player announced his retirement from professional basketball, citing the lack of challenges for him from the game. No wonder. During his roughly 12-year career, Michael Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, captured the MVP award several times, broke various records, and invented a kind of graceful, deeply competitive athleticism that fans had never seen before. Charles Barkley claimed he was not a role model, but Michael did, and the best of his career is well captured in this three-video set, Michael Jordan: The Ultimate Collection.

The earliest tape, Come Fly with Me, chronicles Michael's youth in North Carolina, his college years, and an early career with the Chicago Bulls. It's a fun token for fans who want to remember the squeaky-clean Michael who sported a thin layer of hair on his green head. Air Time takes us into the life of an established, more mature Michael with highlight footage, career insights from Jordan, Dream Team footage, and the Bulls first two championships. Most exciting are the highlights of the 1992 playoffs against the Knicks. Finally, Above and Beyond won't disappoint any person who appreciates the psychology of the athlete. Covering the death of Michael's father, his first retirement, and his baseball endeavors, the video focuses more narrowly on what makes Jordan tick. It lays out the mental determination and physical skill that Michael worked hard to reacquire in the mid-1990s, and which ultimately led to the Bulls' subsequent record-breaking 70-win season. For fans wanting a keepsake of the greatest innovator in the history of basketball, The Ultimate Collection won't disappoint--just as Michael never disappointed us. --Karen Karleski ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!
The Michael Jordan Ultimate Collection is an entertaining and informative recollection of Michael Jordan's career and how it has affected his life. I think it helps that each of the videos was released at a different time. One is from 1989, another 1993, and the last 1996, illustrating his growth and ensuring thorough coverage of every year. In all the videos, there is a wonderful balance of highlights, family life for Mike, his economic impact, and of course, a detailed retelling of each season. For me, the best parts of the set were the intense segments on the playoffs (which made me wish I was born earlier so I could have seen them) and Michael's narration in Air Time. I also liked how they put in highlights throughout each video to make sure the viewer was fully interested. The Ultimate Collection helped me to see MJ better as player and a person, and the conflict and success during his career. For any fellow MJ fans, or anyone who likes basketball, buy the set: it is the BEST documentary on the BEST athlete ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't have this videos , you are not a basketball fan
If you like basketball you MUST have this video collection. The first one has the best Jordan dunks and his first years in the NBA. In the second you'll see how he made his game better and how he won his first threepeat. In the last one you can watch him when he decided to retire and then come back. Is the perfect trilogy. You can't miss it !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Half highlights, Half Michael Jordan as a person
"Michael Jordan: The Ultimate Collection" is without a doubt one of the best, if not the best, highlight films of all time. It has 3 videos and they are all different and they tell you just about everything you want to know about the best basketball player of all time: Michael Jordan. "Michael Jordan: Come Fly With Me" is mostly a lot of spectacular highlights from his college and NBA career. It also shows him playing golf and takes you to his home. "Michael Jordan: Above & Beyond" is about MJ's retirement after winning his first 3 NBA Championships. It has real footage of his retirement speech and then MJ talks about his comeback to the NBA after 17 months off. It also has highlights from his major comeback to the NBA. Finally, "Michael Jordan: Air Time" deals mostly with Jordan's life off the court. There is some footage of highlights, but it's more of an interview film. It will make you understand Michael Jordan like you never have before.

Overall, "Michael Jordan: The Ultimate Collection" doesn't have the most highlights ever put into a collection, but if you're a Michael Jordan fan and want to learn more about him and hear his own insights about his life and the game of basketball, this collection is definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome!!
this is the best highlight film EVER. it showcases the greatest player that ever laced up a pair of sneakers and is so inspirational that i watch it over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone new to golf!!!
"THOROUGHLY" explains the full swing like no one else I've ever seen! (And I've seen and read just about everything!) VERY, VERY, VERY detailed! I had been playing golf for 2 years prior to buying these, and Wally explained "EVERY" question I've ever had! He spends 2 hours on this subject alone! Tape 2 covers the short game, with "EXCELLENT" coverage of bunker play! Wally goes to "ALL" extremes, so you truly understand the mechanics of the sand shot! Tape 3 is about trouble shots, proper course management, & the mental game. "EVERYTHING'S" covered! This set may be a little older, but the instruction is still priceless! On the plus side of that, the price is a lot lower than it used to be! This has been re-released, and also goes by the title of "Scratch Score Golf: Your Complete Personal Golf Trainer". If nothing else, check out some of Wally's DVDs. He really is a great teacher! Oh, and by the way, it's been 4 years since I bought this, and I consistantly shoot in the low 80's. And if something funky's going on with my swing, I don't have to run to the pro...I know how to fix it myself! That in itself is priceless!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let Jack teach you how to play golf his way.
I picked up this book as a 15 year old kid and its the only form of golf lesson I have ever had. My handicap got down to 7 witin 5 years and then I stopped playing. Ive now started again and im going to read this book again and this time with Jacks help im sure I will get down to 2 or 3. Im not saying it will work for everyone, but, I cant think of many other people I would rather have teach me to play golf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Full Swing Instruction Manual
still the single best instruction manual after all these years. (and not just because of the author!) for the first time, proper setup, feel and how to shape your shots is all laid out in one terrific easy to follow book. for example, did you know that after you have mastered one basic swing to hit the ball straight, how just a few simple pre-shot adjustments using the same swing will allow you to hit on command just about any type of shot you want?: the high fade, low penetrating draw, slice or hook (yes there are times when you intentionally want to hit these last 2!) will will become a standard part of your arsenal after reading this book. I was at a clinic being delivered by Jerry Pate once where he said "no one knew how to mechanically hit these shots until Jack Nicklaus taught us all in Golf My Way. before then, it was all done pretty much by feel." I agree with Jerry.

The one thing you won't find here is adequate instruction on the short game other than putting. since chipping and bunker play was never Jack's forte (why bother when you never miss a green!), this is not surprising.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I recently restarted playing golf after a six year hiatus. I bought this book years ago and after skimming through some more recent books I can say that Jack's book is still the best for beginners learning fundementals. I would also recommend Tiger Wood's book which complements Jack's. Whereas Jack is heavy on explanations and swing theory, Tiger's is heavy on photographs (for those who really need pictures).

5-0 out of 5 stars It helps, trust me
I ordered this video on here, it helped my game.
It explains,
The Grip, Aiming, Ball Position, The head, Foot Action, The Takeaway, The Backswing, The Downswing, The Follow Thru, Power.
Plus detailed slow motion swings.

I would rate this 5 out of 5 stars.

Jack has written a very simple book to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great classic video and behind the scenes interviews
I received this set as a gift and I love it. It features the best plays, players, and moments of the NFL's history. As the reviewer said, it does focus on the offensive aspects of the game, but there are plenty of videos about defensive plays and players available, so thats okay with me. 1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible NFL series
You'd think they would show more respect to the venerable National Football League. This horrendous gift set features some of the the worst quality filming and scripting ever in a sports documentary. These tapes in no way do the NFL any justice. Many important plays in football history are bypassed. This set seems to have been slapped together by some amateurs in their garage. I'm going to have to throw the flag in and warn you to stay away from this encroachment. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A barely adequate NFL collection
When one thinks of football, one thinks of great plays, impossible touchdowns, incredible turnovers, and the sort. One thinks of the great love of the game, and of cheering on the home team to the bitter end. However, this gift set never reminds of the like, or of such emotions. This set offers nothing new, with bad cinematography and even worse scripting. Many of the NFL's greatest moments are simply ignored in this disaster of a gift set. These films just simply seem tacked on. Unless you are one who must have everything pro football, stay the whole nine yards away from this unrecovered fumble. ... Read more

The life and legend of Arnold Palmer, who conquered his sport and was one of the key figures in creating the role of a sports celebrity in themedia age, is profiled in this comprehensive production by the Golf Channel. Family snapshots and home movies portray Palmer's childhood as the son of a greenskeeper in western Pennsylvania, and his love of golf is recalled by friends and competitors. Palmer's emergence upon the American golf scene is shown through film clips of his dramatic win at the 1960 Masters tournament, where a pair of birdies on the final two holes established Palmer as the nation's newest sports hero before a national television audience. He locked in his position with a victory at that year's U.S. Open, and before long, golf, Palmer, and an adoring gallery known as "Arnie's Army" became staples on American TV. Before long, a rival in the person of young Jack Nicklaus came along, and golf in the 1960s would be defined by their competition. This documentary does a very professional job in portraying Palmer's excellence on the links over many years, and it also presents a lighthearted look at how he became an American icon as an advertising pitchman, hawking everything from motor oil to Cadillacs. His philanthropic work is also highlighted, and the documentary ends on an uplifting note with Palmer's return to the golf course in 1997 following cancer surgery. The final tape in this three-tape set is entitled "Conversations with the King" and consists of Palmer discussing all aspects of his career in interviews with golfer Mark O'Meara. --Robert J. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Jones was the greatest of all time.....
If you cant learn golf from these videos you shouldnt even attempt to play the game. Though the audio portion of these videos is a bit dated, (Jones speaks like hes reading from cue cards) the fundamentals are here. I have tried to emulate his swing but of course thats impossible, im not that flexible. The short game portion is excellent, very easy to understand, Jones explains as best he can how to execute certain shots, very good teaching aid. Recommended to all golfers who want to improve there game....I like the Cybervision part of the video, repeated swings of Jones from different angles, slow motion and at real time.... music is very eerie sounding..... He was the greatest, (Tiger wouldnt have stood a chance)

4-0 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie
The title of this video is should be "The Bobby Jones Swing Analysis". This video breaks down Jones's graceful swing in slow motion, grip, backswing, downswing, impact and follow thru. Bobby Jones's swing (in my opinon) is just as sound as those of any of 2002 top pro golfers. I've taken lessons, read golf books, watched golf instructional video's. From this video I was able to improve some facets of my game. I'm definitely a Jones's fan now.

2-0 out of 5 stars May not be what you expect!
If you're like me and have seen these mini-movies featured on the Golf Channel, you may be disappointed by the fact that the story lines have been cut out of these tapes. The charm and humor evident in the original films is all but gone, save the low key and warm delivery of Jones. It's too bad the producers of the video versions chose to drop the very thing that made these films worth seeing. While some of the instruction is sound (even for today's modern game) without the actors and storylines intact, these videos offer nothing that isn't in any other run-of-the-mill golf instruction video on the market.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excerpts...
Although not stated in the video descritption, this VHS is actually excerpts from the original Bobby Jones How to Break 90 "movies". This video excerpts the instructional portion of these movies. This is valuable, since Bobby Jones is able to discuss the essence of the golf swing and convey these thoughts in a concise manner. While a bit of Bobby's swing was dictated by the equipment of the time, the basics still apply today. It is unfortunate hat the entire mvies weren't included, as they were very humourous and contained the major actors of the time. ...
