3-0 out of 5 stars Unwilling Suspension of Disbelief
The Bone Collector is two movies in one; the good movie has some nice acting from Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, some creepy special effects, and a couple of really terrifying and suspenseful moments for the killer's victims. That's the movie you'll want to suspend your disbelief for--and that suspension would consist solely of accepting that this serial killer would leave clues to engage the police in a game of Cat and Mouse rather than just go directly for his real target. That fictional convention would have been enough, and had the premise that forensics will triumph been followed though, the film could have been truly excellent.

The other movie just asks too much; that a patrol cop who's never worked a crime scene would be the only policeperson allowed on a scene; that the scene of a crime would reveal only those clues intentionally left behind by the killer (isn't that the whole point of forensics, that you find out things the killer didn't intend you to discover?); and on and on. This second movie apparently takes place on that alternate Earth on the opposite side of the sun from ours, where the writing is all backwards and the superhero the Flash looks like the FTD florist's logo. When audience members find themselves thinking (or saying aloud) "That wouldn't happen!" over and over, there's something drastically wrong with the plot and the screenplay. It's certainly not a problem unique to the Bone Collector; in fact I'd venture to guess that plot implausibility is one of the leading cause of death for Hollywood's hit status, only capable of being overcome by the infusion of massive star power. Washington and Jolie, as attractive as they are, don't quite make it here. All in all, The Bone Collector is probably worth renting, probably not worth owning. I certainly wouldn't bother to see it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I read over some of the other reviews putting this movie at an "average" rating, but I kinda disagree. First off, I think the director and producer put this movie together perfectly. In case you do not know about this movie, Ill start off by describing it a bit... The main theme lies in the thriller/mystery department, so if you like these kind of films, you will most definitely like this movie. The two main charactors in the movie are Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. Denzel plays a disabled Crime Scene Investigator and Angelina plays a rookie police officer who laters finds out her talent as a crime scene investigator. The setting of the story takes place in New York City (which is a perfect spot for this type of movie) and is cast in modern day life. Basically, the plot of the movie is about a phsyco murderer who, very strategically, plans killings by using his job as a taxi cab driver to kidnapp people. I dont want to get too in depth, but the good guys would be Denzel and Angelina and a few other police bureau workers who try to solve the mystery behind all the kidnappings and hopefully get to the crime scene in time to save innocent people. You might have preconcieved notions about this movie being kind of average, but what makes this movie stand out is its outstanding film features. By features I mean, great music and excellent effects (everything such as lighting, settings etc). If your going to watch it, here are some VERY recommended suggestions...

1. Make sure its dark- 50% of the movies general "effect" comes from the ambience in which you watch it. 2. Watch on a fairly large television with a fairly good sound system. - try to get the best TV and sound system to watch the movie otherwise dont even bother with the movie. 3. Must get it on DVD! - Dont watch the VHS version, I saw it and its horrible. Film quality is bad and it doesnt include all the extras which tell about the Bone collector. Sound is also improved on DVD version. Any way you look at it, you need to give the Bone Collector a try. Great movie for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Chilling, Above Average Suspense Thriller
"The Bone Collector," based on Jeffrey Deaver's best-selling novel, is a gothic suspense thriller that takes the viewer below the streets of New York City, to places dark and chilling, where an evil serial killer does his dirty deeds. Creepy!!

Police detective Lincoln Rhyme, (Denzel Washington is wonderful in this role - but isn't he always?), is considered to be THE genius of forensic science. His books on the subject are mandatory study at the Police Academy. During an investigation, four years before, Rhyme was involved in a terrible on-the-job accident which left him a quadriplegic and bedridden. Attached to life sustaining machines, he is only able to move one finger and his head and neck. He is subject to seizures that threaten to leave him a vegetable. A very angry man, he is bored and, at times, suicidal. Still an official member of the force, his former colleagues visit him constantly and involve him in difficult cases. A new, troubling case forces them to seek his help, yet again.

Rookie cop, Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie), works with the city's troubled youth. By chance she discovers the half-buried body of a powerful New York City businessman, near a railroad track. She, almost intuitively, knows what to do to protect the forensic evidence. Sending a witness off to buy a disposable camera, she takes photos of the crime scene before a rainstorm can wash away the evidence. She then, single-handedly, stops a train to preserve valuable clues. Rhyme decides she has natural forensic talent and demands she be placed on the case. So she reluctantly joins his team. Donaghy does the leg work, connected by a headset to Rhyme, while he instructs her. The two puzzle over clues and work the case from his bedside. And the leg work is brutally grim. This killer, intelligent and demented, thinks up some awful ways to commit murder. The crime scenes are elaborately set-up and clues are purposefully left that would stump the most avid puzzle addict. The gruesome crimes remind me of those in the movie "Seven."

The mystery is intriguing and the forensic work absolutely fascinates. The chemistry between Rhyme and Donaghy is palpable. This is more than a student-mentor bond, although it takes them a while to get the relationship off the ground. He is cranky and imperious - she is just plain ornery. Amelia brings him to life again and he stops contemplating euthanasia. In turn, he brings new energy to Amelia's life and forces her to open up. Queen Latifa (as Rhyme's nurse) and Luis Guzman (as a fellow cop ands friend) are show stealers.

This is no "Silence of the Lambs," but it is good entertainment. The camera gives the ambiance a dark and brooding look and provides some interesting angles. Often predictable, there are still surprises and the growing closeness between the detective and the cop is very well done and subtle. Although "The Bone Collector" is not a "must see," it is certainly an exciting way to spend a rainy night.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fractured Bones
Why does almost every film about a serial killer, made after Silence Of The Lambs, have to be compared to it? I can't think of one example where that turned out to be true. Despite the prescence of Denzel Washington and a usually surehanded director, behind the camera, The Bone Collector is just another predictable thriller, devoid of any real spark.

A murderer is loose on the streets of Manhattan. The killer leaves a trail of cryptic messages hidden at the scene of the crime. Clues which only a brilliant mind can interpret. Lincoln Rhyme (Washington) a gifted New York City detective specializing in forensics, was one of the the country's leading criminologists. Rhyme has a keen eye for details and a nose for clues. Following a near fatal injury in the line of duty, Rhyme is left bed-bound, his arms and legs useless, and with little will to live. Now as the city lives in fear, Rhyme is persuaded to help with the case. A rookie cop Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) is assigned to become Rhyme's eyes, ears and legs. The two must work together in order to get inside the mind of this madman and defeat him before the next victim falls.

Phillip Noyce, the man behind the intense Dead Calm, and actioners Patriot Games & Clear And Present Danger, certainly knows what he's doing. But as is the case with the thriller, the film rises and falls, with its script. Unfortunately, the screenplay, based on the book by Jeffery Deaver, adapted by Jeremy Iacone is pretty weak. The killer reveal and other twists and turns are easy to figure out. It's a shame that Washington makes almost no connection with Jolie. In one of her other thrillers, Taking Lives, she had similar troubles with Ethan Hawke---Do I sense a pattern here? What tension the film does have, is moot, thanks to the problems the movie has.

As far as the extras found on the DVD are concerned, most of it, comes across as fluffy filler. The audio commentary track from director Noyce is worth a listen, if only to get insight on directing in general. The "making of" spotlight on location is just a pre release bloated commercial for the film. The theatrical trailer, production notes, filmographies, and previews for other Universal products, top off the disc.

The Bone Collector is just for those Washington fans or when there's nothing else to watch

5-0 out of 5 stars View your world in a new light
The movie takes a look at the average social environment, the need for people to conform. When Jack enters the picture, in his non-conformist style, I was certain there would be trouble. Jack shows how you can exist in society and still be yourself. Jack's true meaning wasn't revealed until the end and it was a wonderful reminder that Jacks exist everywhere. We just need to open ourselves to the lessons. I'd love to see more movies like this

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
I have loved this movie for so long. Saw it on tv this am and decided to find it for my own collection. Here we are.... This is one FABULOUS movie. Patrick Swayze really shows his true talent. Buy I say, buy it you must. It is one for the collectors

2-0 out of 5 stars Fails to deliver
This film has been billed as a "touching", "family" film. I beg to differ. I bought the film mainly because it has a couple of my favorite performers: Patrick Swayze and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. They both did a fine job in this film, but it just wasn't enough. What I failed to notice when I bought this movie was the HBO logo on the back of the box. When I popped the DVD into my player and the HBO logo came up on the screen I knew I was sunk. I have never yet seen an HBO film that I thought was worth watching. This was no exception. In my humble opinion HBO should have never gotten into the movie business.

Twenty minutes into the film I was asking myself: "Does this movie have a point?". Thirty minutes, same question. An hour later, same question. FINALLY, at the end of the movie, the point of the film comes out and by that time I'm just glad it's over. To those who say this is a family film for kids, I would dearly love to do the following science experiment: get a diverse cross section of a hundred kids and put 'em in a room and start up this film. By the end of the film measure how many are still in the room (and awake). Anybody want to place some bets?

There are plenty of excellent, "feel good" movies out there. This sadly is not one of them unless, perhaps, you are a junky of the genre. Best to rent before buying, or give a miss altogether.

2-0 out of 5 stars starts good then pancakeville
well this movie starts out exellent and one can only wonder what would happened if it staid on this track because by the end of the first half hour it becomes boring and mindless. This was very unfortunate because it started out with some great ideas but very quickly lost its way. This was very frustrating because i saw its potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars This One Is A Real Tear Jerker... Not For Faint At Heart!
I have seen this movie two times and am purchasing it on DVD, because it deserves to be in my collection. This movie is awesome, if you have kids its a must see! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Fact Based Thriller
Based on actual events, "A Show of Force" was based on the scandalous Cerro Maravilla incident that rocked Puerto Rican politics in 1978. On July 25, 1978, two young independence-seekers were ambushed by island police and murdered in cold blood near Cerro Maravilla. Police reports claim that the activists were trying to sabotage a radio transmitter to air pro-independence messages throughout the island, however after a serious investigation by the Puerto Rican government, it was discovered that this was a planned murder sponsored by the governor at the time, Carlos Romero Barcelo, and members in his pro-statehood administration.

The scandal which left a major mark on the dirtiness of Puerto Rican politics, helped paved the way to Barcelo's defeat by pro-Commonwealth governor, Rafael Hernandez Colon, and destroyed the statehood party's reputation forever.

This film, directed by Brazilian director, Bruno Bareto, stars Amy Irving, as Kate, an investigative reporter working for a local newspaper. After uncovering the truth behind the massive cover-up by the governor, Kate is determined to uncover the truth even more so than before. However, danger lurks around, as both FBI and the governor's allies monitor her moves.

Based on actual events, "A Show of Force" is partly-fictional, however it does open the viewer's eyes that injustice, oppression, and corruption can exist even in a democratic free country as the United States. Although some of the film seems to be outdated and/or inaccurate (clothes, economic development, etc..) other parts of the film remain interesting enough to retain the viewer in a suspenseful state.

Amy Irving, who later married Bareto (after her divorce from Stephen Spielberg, she began filming in Puerto Rico) is an excellent actress, and her role is believable. Lou Diamond Phillips is excellent as a villain you will love to hate, and Andy Garcia's role is indeed a "glorified cameo". While the film ends on a different note (the film has Kate capturing the police chief's confession on tape, when in fact it took more than 15 years of senate hearings and investigations by human rights groups to finally reveal the truth about the cover-up) the film will allow many who have little or no knowledge about Puerto Rico's complex colonial situation with the United States to gain a broader understanding.

Filmed in San Juan, Puerto Rico and neighboring suburbs, this film should be watched by all who support human rights throughout the world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kinda corny...
The only thing that actually made this movie watchable was that Kevin Spacey was in it. Any movie he's in is watchable. The plot is cheesy, and there are about 50 million other movies like it, but if you're a Spacey fan, go for it. Lou Diamond and Irving fans could probably watch this too.

4-0 out of 5 stars BASED ON A TRUE STORY
Shots shatter the silence a top a foggy mountain in the tropical island, as the two dead bodies fall to the ground...Government conspiracy, political cover up, spies and corruption are the ingredients of this film based on the true story of the events that happened back in the 70'S, about the murder of two puertorrican students that were in favor of Puerto Rico's independence, in a time where people who favored this political view were being black listed and harrassed, by the government. One of the students was the son of a well known writer. Having been in Puerto Rico when all of this took place, and when the movie was shown in theaters there, I have to say that this movie is only a brief portrayal of the much more complex true story. The film is based on the book Murder under two flags, by Anne Nelson. Interesting to watch , even with it's geographical and cultural inaccuracies. In one scene, we see the students taking a cab to the Cerro Maravilla which is deep in the country side, however the cab is going in the wrong direction towards Old San Juan( Old San juan sits in a peninsula/island conected to the larger island by one bridge, which they had left behind). Also, they show the locals wearing clothes from the 40's, and make the island look like a banana republic which I thought was ridiculous. They show old trucks hauling chickens, people wearing straw hats, and a third world kind of atmosphere that even for that time, is inaccurate. Andy Garcia wears a hat, and dresses like Orvil Reddenbucker, bow tie and all! Needless to say we all laughed outloud in the theater,it was insulting and funny at the same time. The real life Rivera Cruz-the prosecutor- actually wore designer suits, and no hat! I guess Hollywood will never let a latin american country be shown as a modern city with well dressed, clean cut, educated people. We need Latin directors and producers who know the culture, to start pointing out this things to the big studios, because the people who do the research on culture for set and fashion design are way off, believe me,I know, I'm puertorrican, born and raised. The director, Bruno Barreto, is brazilian, and probably meant well by trying to show us a 70's Puerto Rico.Next time they should first contact the Instituto de cultura de Puertorriqueño(Cultural institute of Puerto Rico)and they gladly will provide the historical and cultural background needed for this type of movie. The movie is good although I didn't like the ending, it was too cliché. The movie features great puertorrican actors like, Tony Chiroldes, Michelle Corbiere, and Claribel Medina to name a few. These three are fully bilingual and I wonder why they haven't appear in more films, because I know there is a shortage of well train bilingual spanish/english speaking actors in the industry. All in all is a movie that shouldn't be missed. I bought it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Complete garbage
What started off as a really inciteful piece of political satire has now just turned into another money maker sequel series. This isn't even the original Bud, because the original Bud died shortly after the first film. The original Bud would have nothing to do with this, especially the part about sharing the movie poster with a friggin raccoon.

3-0 out of 5 stars G-rated Language?
For the most part, this is the same formula as the others and is fine for your children to watch on their own. But at one point the character of Andrea, dismayed by her non-athleticism remarks (...). Many say I'm old fashioned for considering this a swear word, but I have no desire to hear my 3 or 5 year old repeat that phrase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Sequels
It can be hard to generate sequels to a movie that was based on a true story. The original movie starred Air Bud, a real golden retriever with 20,000 career baskets. Unfortunately the read Buddy lost a leg shortly after the film was made.

In this sequel, the storyline returns to some real issues and not just silliness. Josh's oldest sister (his only full sibling) must deal with Josh going away to college. Josh promises to return, but it is hard for her, especially when his old room begins being remade for the new baby. Andrea's old life from her parents seems to be being swept away by the new life with step-father and half sibling.

But Andrea has other problems. She has just entered junior high with her best friend and they try to fit in by joining an activity. Unfortunately they are hopeless at most everything until they try baseball. Andrea's friend Tammy has real talent but Andrea just doesn't know what to do. Tammy only agrees to be on the team if Andrea is on it as well. This means that Andrea does a lot of bench warming.

But when Tammy is injured Andrea if forced into play and helps the team lose game after game. She then finds out that the coach didn't want her on the team originally.

Buddy to the rescue! Buddy helps Andrea by getting her to practice. Andrea funnels her anger into intensive practice and refuses to give up. Eventually she begins to catch and hit. More and more practice and she becomes a decent player.

Of course this wouldn't be an Air Bud movie if Buddy didn't suit up and play. Seeing Buddy holding a bat is one of the most unbelievable things in the movie. Sorry, just couldn't handle that one (although I can believe his catching ability).

The other major downer in the movie is the way Andrea's parents behave. I can accept them being less attentive due to the new baby buy they seem so unconcerned when Andrea goes missing (although not as bas as when Josh goes missing in the previous movie).

Tension is added to the film by a Horace and Jasper type team who are out to abduct Buddy and his kids (there are only four instead of six like in the previous movie) in an attempt to discover the sports gene and its secrets. Their bumbling efforts are offset by an even more bumbling sheriff in the silliest cowboy hat seen in a long time.

I have to say that I rank the original Air Bud as the best of the films, followed by Seventh Inning Stretch and then World Pup. I don't think the rest are worth ranking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad there isn't a negative star rating ...
I endured this one at the behest of my 6-year-old. The Air Bud series should have been put to sleep a long time ago. As in just about every other Disney movie, this one continues the tradition of portraying adults as moronic buffoons, while the kids are the wise ones. The plot is stale, the "funny" parts are as corny as they can get. Give me back my 87 minutes, please!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Laughable Disgrace of a Movie
Okay, I didn't like the first Air Bud film, or the second. This film, however, doesn't deserve the name "Disney" any more than Air Bud deserves to be referred to as a Dachshund. Disney owes it to the movie watching audience to put Air Bud to an eternal sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical Saura film: surreal, ironic, dark, yet enligtening..
Pauline Kael called this film a comedy. I think it is more of a magical realism melodrama, intercepted with typical sarcastic Spanish humor.

"The Garden of Delights" is a story about impotence [both symbolic and literal] of contemporary society, with all its money and technological advancement. The main character is a man in a wheelchair, who does not have an actual medical illness; he is paralyzed by the uselessness of his own existence, and so is his whole household.

Saura's camera works to create the aura of emptiness, uselessness, and mental confusion-- qualities that can characterize every single member of the household, with the exception of the non-real, airy aunt from another world. He constantly uses annoyingly long shots, empty shots, purposeless shots, etc.

If, in fact, main characters do have an illness, then, it is definitely paranoia, which creates a seeming physical ailment.

This film is deep, artistically and emotionally challenging. It demands more than a simple casual viewing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie
Amor bandido is certainly not a very romantic and dreamy movie. It is very violent but every scene is totally justified. One must know that all characters in the movie are not sophisticated, they all live in favelas and have a lot of problems because they don't know how to live better.
Despite all the violence and sad way of life, there is sensible side of the story. Some people may not like it because it is not a dreamy movie but it does not make it a bad movie. On the other hand as with all foreign movies, translation is not as good as the original language, therefore it may not make sense to a lot of viewers. The movie, to my taste is very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars didnt keep my attention
i rented this movie based on a recommendation from one of my co-workers who, just like me, is into lesser-known movies...i suppose that this movie is a "gritty" "bonnie-n-clyde' type story, but the story about the skeletal prostitute and her lover failed to keep my attention, and frankly halfway through the film i a) wasnt able to relate to any of the characters on a personal level, and b) didnt care if any of the characters lived or died...in general, a REALLY BAD movie ...

4-0 out of 5 stars gritty and seductive
A young girl, estranged from her bullying detective father, loves a boy with an angelic face and heavenly body. But he is also a cold-blooded sociopath, and his crimes are being investigated by her father. One feels the girl's dilemna, because it's hard not to love this beautiful and seductive outlaw. A story worth of Greek tragedy.

4-0 out of 5 stars The actors yell at each other excessively.
The scene where the detective winces and covers his ears in the front of the truck is good example of bad acting. The film is faded and dated in the manner of many films of the 1970s, and when it was transfered to video, the irregular speed of the projector caused the music to warble. But it was filmed in Rio de Janeiro, in Portuguese, and the story is compelling.

3-0 out of 5 stars a story of outlaw love
Not all love relationships are healthy ones. This story tells how a young Brazilian woman with a deceased mother and a father from whom she is alienated turns for love to a young man of extremely mysterious and questionable background. This is not really a Bonnie and Clyde story, because the heroine is basically a decent person, but one who is obsessive about love. Her father, a well-known detective in Rio de Janeiro, tries to save her from self-destruction, but fights an up-hill battle amidst the squalor of the sexual and criminal underworlds of Rio. 3-0 out of 5 stars A nice change of pace for Pfeiffer
After 'Scream' rehashed the horror genre, 'Lake Placid' tried to do the same for the horror genre. The ghost genre inevitably came next, but fared somewhat better. Take 'The Sixth Sense' and 'House On Haunted Hill' for example, both well above your average scary movie. Now this film sold itself on the basis that it was an 'adult' horror movie. By that it simply meant old-fashioned, for supposed teen flicks such as 'Scream' were actually far more intelligent. This is just sophisticated.

Still, it's nice to see a movie where Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer manage to move away from type-casting and prove that they can both act. Also impressive is the fact that director Zemeckis filmed this whilst on a hiatus from his other film 'Castaway'. Unfortunately though, it drags a lot at the start. After things hot up a little you'll be at the edge of your seat but for a long while it's a little dull. Of course, this was passed off as being adult and a great tension-builder and no-one dared say anything. It was just kep quiet about whilst everyone raved about the ending.

If you're not accustomed to the genre then this is probably a really good start to ghost movies. But there are far better ones out there and this is little more than ordinary. In fact, it is only really a fantastic turn by Pfeiffer that makes it anything special. Watch out throughout the movie for key points that are heavily earmarked as future plot elements - what's with the mysterious (and conveniently misty) lake? the old photos? and the seemingly insignificant fact that you can't get mobile phone reception on the deserted bridge?

Highly entertaining in parts, very dull in others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, complex and masterfully engaging horror.
What Lies Beneath, a brilliant, masterfully played out homage to Hitchcock is quite frankly the scariest movie I have ever seen. I came out of the cinema pale and shaking and while I was watching the film I was so scared I even had to shield my eyes at parts. All the scary parts are brought to life by a great score with manages to grab you in the nuts at the most unexpected times. The movie is over 2 hours long but never tires. I have watched this about 5 times now and every time I get the chills and always appreciate the film more. Robert Zemeckis excellent direction reminds us of how many great movies directors can do in 1 year. Cast Away and this film were both brilliant experiences and Zemeckis directs them both brilliantly. The performances excel, with Michelle Pfeiffer excellent as Claire Spencer who, while trying to uncover a masterful mystery, is slowly losing her mind. Harrison Ford brings up many shocks and takes a surprising back seat. His performance is fabulous. What Lies Beneath builds its suspense - especially in one horrifyingly Hitchcockian bathtub sequence - and always uses its ideas. I couldn't find many plot holes but the film can be complex at times. If you watch the film carefully and take note of everything that's happening I'm sure you'll understand the ending and the mystery that is slowly unlocking. What Lies Beneath has many great camera shots too like Michelle's toe peaking above the bath water, her hand clutching the side, her grabbing a sharp piece of glass and it reflecting her terrified face and a freaky close-up on Harrison Ford's eye. I love this movie, and it will always be a heart-stopping and fun experience for me to sit through.

5-0 out of 5 stars verrry suspenceful
i was focused on this movie the whole time, and i'm the type of person wondering when it's going to be over. i was litterallyon the edge of my seat for some of the parts. if you like scary movies, you should see this one. it was great.

4-0 out of 5 stars "A Thriller"
Well Harrison Ford has a heel turn in this movie, well the whole movie until the last 30 min of it he trys to kill his wife cause she finds out he killed a student.Well this was a great movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars horrific horror (that means good)
this is a good horror movie, but i don't know if it would still be suspensful the 2nd time around. (i only like em super scary.) ya. that's it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Suspense Without Sherlock Holmes
One of the finest suspense movies that I have seen in long time. Avery has had the unfortunate luck to have his sister kidnapped and ransomed for $2,000,000. Unfortunately, neither he nor his father have that kind of money. So he and his friends kidnap retired mob boss Charlie Bartolucci (expertly played by Christopher Walken) so that he can use his contacts to find the girl and pay the ransom. Shocked, angered, and ultimately amused by his novice captors, Bartolucci agrees to help with Avery's sister. While doing so, one of his contacts lets him know that the kidnapping had help from an inside party. Slyly playing the friends against each other with this information, the tension slowly continues to boil until the movie's explosive climax. With an underrated but excellent supporting cast (including Jay Mohr, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Denis Leary), this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time because you're never sure who to trust. Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of Josh McKinney's script is the unending depth of the characters. Denis Leary's role is a perfect example: as Bartolucci's lieutenaant he posesses an expected viciousness and sarcasm. However, he allows a good soul to shine through at odd moments: like when he shows up to question a friend of the boys and instead protects her from the forced advances of her stepfather. Filled with tension that is only heightened by the film's biting humor and its complex characters, this is a great flick to watch with a bunch of friends so you can all guess whodunnit and be shocked by the ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny and Dark
"Suicide Kings" is a very good movie with a great ensemble cast. Different viewers will chose their particular favorites, but if you are an admirer of Christopher Walken you have all the reason you need to see this film. Denis Leary is the second best aspect of this film, and that is largely due to his smaller, but critical role. His defensive riffs on justifying his $1500.00 Stingray boots that others acknowledge as, "fish-boots", is quality stand up material.

Four prep-school, rich kid, lifelong friends, and a fifth that they mislead as only friends can do, decide they need to kidnap Christopher Walken for his diplomatic skills. His character is a modern version of Don Corleone so a decision to detain him against his will is poor judgment at best and lethal at worst. When Walken contacts his attorney to unravel this mess his first comments include, "don't send your kids to boarding school". The unwitting friend Ira, as played by Johnny Galecki is a riot as he frets over his parents newly finished floors and marked liquor labels, while, "The Godfather", is duct-taped to his father's favorite chair.

Christopher Walken is an amazing actor that deserves more recognition than he has been given. If there is an actor who can play a more sinister, purely evil character, without raising his voice, I have never seen him. This role is comparable to the part he played in another film when he introduced himself as the Anti-Christ. As brilliant a, "Player", as his character is, there is also a pair of low level goons that are the mob's equivalent of Laurel and Hardy.

The R rating is appropriate for the violence, and language that may or may not offend some viewers. There are no, "adult situations".

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie to watch time after time
I don't exactally know what made me watch this movie. I think my dad picked it up from some $5 bin and one day while bored out of my mind I picked it up a random movie and decided to watch it. But I am glad that I watched it for sure. It is a movie that I have literally watched twice in the last week (well that could be due to the fact that I have nothing better to do...) and cracked up thru both times. and everytime i watch this movie knowing the ending I am still questioning who the inside player is and how everything is going to end. basically it is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time and it is a movie tht i recommend to everyone who likes dar comedies and doesnt mind blood and cussing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Walken the Great.
Great script, great directing, great acting, great movie. it is a blend of crime drama and thin satire. it combines very smoothly the abilities of great actors (Christopher Walken)with the exuberance of young prospects. and Dennis Leary was born for his role in this motion picture.
this is a must have for any christopher walken fan, and movie lovers in general. you will not be dissapointed, especially with the deleted scenes and alternate endings extras. enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ace Action
This movie made me drool at the cinema. The action scenes are incredible and this movie is very well made. The bouncing, shaking, wobbling camera was very impressive on the big screen. And the music was just totally awesome too. Randy Quaid and Morgan Freeman were very good in this film although I don't think Minnie Driver was good at an American accent.

Don't be to hard on this film. It wasn't made to move CITIZEN KANE off its throne. Christopher Young's score is hugely action packed and very loud throughout the film.

The film was originally called THE FLOOD and had numerous other characters in it and had many daylight scenes. But because of an abundance of disaster movies at the time it was reshot as an action movie that was set totally at night. And practically in real time too.

The DVD is in Dolby 5.1 and is letterboxed at 2.30:1.

4-0 out of 5 stars Twisted plot, but still a good movie
Hard Rain might have a twisted plot, pitting an armored truck guard against some robbers who are trying to steal 3 million dollars, but that doesn't really make it a bad movie. All the while, they're surrounded by a massive flood as their main obstacle. Hard Rain has some of the best actors such as Morgan Freeman and Randy Quaid playing the leading roles and they all do great jobs. Hard Rain also has some good action sequences and a lot of suspense throughout the film. It's like a wet and wild goosechase with everybody trying to catch Christian Slater in order to get the money. The special effects with all the water and rain couldn't have been done much better. Hard Rain is just another usual action movie until Morgan Freeman joins Christian Slater and they both team up and try to survive against the other robbers. That's when this movie gets a lot better with all the suspense and action.

If you like good action movies with some suspense added in, you will probably like Hard Rain. The only drawback is the twisted plot, sometimes you might wonder what the movie is really about. But watch it and you'll figure it out without a problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite Entertaining Nonsense
It's set, entirely at night, in the small Indiana town of Huntingburg which is being evacuated as a serious flood develops. But there are a few folk still around: Christian Slater and Edward Asner, the drivers of an armoured truck with $3M in the back; Morgan Freeman, the leader of a small gang of thieves with their sights set on the same 3M, Randy Quaid, a sheriff with some unappealing character traits; Minnie Driver, a churchwarden who has lingered rashly to protect her beloved stained glass windows; Richard Dysart and Betty White, an elderly couple stubbornly refusing to leave for fear of looters, thrown in for comic relief. Slater escapes from Freeman and his pals with the money which he hides in a cemetery. They pursue him on jet skis... Everyone gets very wet. Explosions. Gunfights. Hair's breadth escapes by lead characters trapped in rising floodwater. General mayhem. Credulity strained to breaking point. Significantly above average American action movie. More original than most. Quite good fun. Nothing special. But worth a look if you like this sort of thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE
Absolutely awful. Poor script, plot and acting was stagey. It looked more like a Jr. High School play rather than a full length feature film. Christian and Morgan are two great actors but you couldn't tell in this chaotic mess. Skip it and save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars a wet ride
begins good put the end with Quaid is sorta a letdown but all throughtout its a hell of a ride with Slater running back and forth being chased by Freeman and his 3 henchmen after his uncle got killed(Edward Asner) and then he has to deal with Driver's safety and then Quaid and his pals and they all want the same thing. the bags full of money. the flood sequences are the best with all the rising water and the fires and the gunplay. Solomon directs a nice flood thriller. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Family Movie
I have heard many people say that this version of "Angels in the Outfield" is vastly inferior to the original 1954 movie. Well, if that's the case, the original must have been pretty darn spectacular, because this movie is very well-done. Roger and J.P. are foster children living under the temporary care of a kind woman named Maggie. Roger is the main character. His mother is dead, and his troubled father rarely visits, even when he promises to. One day, however, his father jokingly says that they have as much chance of being a family again as the last-place California Angels (now the Anaheim Angels) have to win the pennant. Roger takes this statement at face value and prays for heavenly help, which soon arrives in the form of angels who actually come onto the playing field to assist the team. This begins a wonderful summer in which the players, along with their disgruntled manager, start to believe in themselves and find the value of teamwork and courage. Although this is a good film for the entire family (only some very mild profanity and the awkward parent scenes are carried out appropriately), there are several issues that will not be missed by knowledgable (older) viewers. For example, the potential for racial trouble involving the manager and the two boys at the end of the film (I don't want to give it away!) is completely skipped over, although it is a very likely scenario. Although, it is a Disney movie, so everything is supposed to be too good to be true! Overall, "Angels in the Outfield" is an emotional, although sometimes unbelievable, story with a good message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great baseball movie
I have seen this movie several times and never get tired of it. The acting in the movie is great and the story is cool too.

Roger and JP are two children who live in a foster-home with a kind woman name Maggie. Roger and JP are in love with baseball and the local Anaheim Angels who play only a few blocks from their home. They sneak into every game that they are able to, to watch their beloved team. Roger, however feels sad quite often because he wants to be back with his troubled father. His father made a deal with him that he'd be back to pick him up if the Angels ever won the pennant. During one game Roger see's angels in the outfield helping a player making a catch, and at the plate, helping them hit. But nobody else can see them, not even JP. After they tell the manager about this he has Roger motions to him whenever he sees the angels. Then the Angels start winning after starting off the season very slow. With the help of the angels that Roger sees they win the pennant. Roger gets very sad because he will have to leave Maggie and JP, but his troubled father never comes to pick him up which breaks his heart.

If you are looking for a great, funny baseball movie with a fantasy twist you should check out Angels in the Outfield.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty sappy stuff
Foster-child Roger (Joseph Gordon-Leavitt) prays for the California Angels to win the pennant in the mistaken belief that it will lead to reconciliation with his father (Dermot Mulroney). Angels begin to intervene on the Angels' behalf, bringing hope, faith, and a renewed sense of self-worth to bitter manager George Knox (Danny Glover) and his clumsy team. Diabetics should avoid this film at all costs. It goes for easy sentimentality every step of the way, leading to a very predictable outcome. Kids may like it, though I don't want to be the one to explain why God would pick sides in a sports contest, especially since He and his angels ought to be well aware that answering Roger's prayers will not lead to the outcome he so desperately desires. Oh well, if you can put your brain on hold and get misty-eyed over a stadium full of spectators flapping their arms like angels, you ought to have a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sentimental, Touching, and Sure to Make You Smile
While it's true that this movie has a high quantity of cheeziness, in this case it works. This movie reminds you that all things happen for a reason, even if you can't see it right away, it shows the value of beleiving, and it restores your faith in people.
The cast is very well chosen. All of the characters are well established, with very definite personalities, and all of the actors step up and fill their shoes nicely. Your heart will be touched a thousand times over during the course of this movie. You'll laugh, and you'll cry, and when the movie's over you'll feel like maybe the world is a little bit better place.
The film is greatly suited for children, as it doesn't involve the sort of foul humour that so many movies do now. It's just good old fashioned fun, as any baseball movie should be. There IS a heavy dose of morals in the mix. Beyond the over-all theme of believing in yourself, and having faith that God has a greater plan, the film also touches on the dangers of smoking, and how unnecessary profanity is.
Many scenes in this movie are truly beautiful and inspiring. Everytime the crowd stands up to flap their arms in support of Mel Clark (Tony Danza) I can't help but shed a tear, and when Roger's prayers are answered and he gets a family my heart melts all over again.
This movie is truly among the most uplifting of children's movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney at it's best
A spiritual film is what you could name it.Angels really have a presence on the field. They affect how the Basball Team the Angels play. They can help make dazzling catches and hits.Sounds unbelievedle. It is! To better understand the film you have to have imganination.A Christian know Angels do exsict So it's easy for them to not be cynical.Now..I know Angels don't do all those crazy stunts. But it's a very touching moment when Danny Glover the Angel informs his mystic friend Roger,A boy whose father left him, that one of the teamates is going to die and become a basball angel. He knows this six monthes before it happens. It really helps a person to think about divinity. As the foster mother says, players often pray before their big moment to God,so why are Angels running around so strange.Actually a thought provaking film Great for Families.(I heard a reviewer on Amazon critizes the boy Roger for believing his father will take him back if the Angels win the Penent.Geez,He's a child, clinging onto a lost hope. One in despair will ask for the impossible. And the Impossible happened.Just not the way Roger expected! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'll Write A Review You Can't Refuse
Francis Ford Coppola does something with this movie many filmmakers are unable to do. Coppola makes us feel as if we're part of the"FAMILY". We feel as if were behind the scenes watching the Corleone's up's and down's. A one of a kind screenplay written by Mario Puzo and Coppola, and as we all should know by now,the film the based on Puzo's novel. Truly desevering of the Oscars in won. Brando's performance in this movie,is in my opinion, the best of his career. And the same goes with the rest of the cast:Al Pacino,Diane Keaton,James Caan,Robert Duvall, and Talia Shire. Everyone in this movie delivers a powerhouse performances. Many unforgettable lines and characters that will stay with us forever. Terrific music score by Nino Rota, beautiful camerawork by Gordon Willis, and top notch directing Coppola. Truly one of the greatest films ever made! If there's anyone who hasn't seen this movie, you have no idea what your missing. A must for anyone's video collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Movie of All Time.
A movie of such size, influence, and power as "The Godfather" isn't simply a movie. It's a life-altering experience. Francis Ford Coppola, barely into his thirties, would team up with author Mario Puzo to create the greatest period gangster epic whose influence remains incalculable. It all begins with the performances. Take a look at the opening scene, in which the undertaker Bonasera comes to Vito (Marlon Brando) for "justice" following the brutal assault of his daughter. That scene is brilliantly played and wonderfully directed, and Brando's portrayal as the Don is nothing short of perfect. The public perception of a Don of this magnitude is someone who is loud, brash, and emotional. Not this one. Brando's Vito is calm, soft spoken, and rarely raises his voice, which makes his character even more intimidating. But while Brando shines in this film, the heart of the movie (and indeed the entire trilogy) belongs to the then-newcomer Al Pacino, who playes Vito's youngest son, Michael. Michael's transformation from a mild-mannered college grad to a ruthless Mafia thug is one of the greatest performances you will see. James Caan as the hotheaded Sonny, John Cazale as the dim Fredo, the suave Robert DuVall as attorney Tom Hagen, and Talia Shire as the troubled newlywed Connie all shine in their supporting roles. Reviewing a movie like "The Godfather" is a bit overwhelming, as it has already been studied by other, more experienced film geeks. But if there's one movie you see in your lifetime, it has to be this verified, straight-up classic. Give three hours of your life to this movie, and what it will give in return will reward you richly.

4-0 out of 5 stars LOUSY TRANSFER OF A CLASSIC
I can only add my voice to the many who were disappointed by the DVD transfer. How can you mess up one of the best movies of the last half century? Looks very grainy in some indoor scenes...in fact, some scenes looked like they were filmed with an old, cheap video camera. That said, the story, acting, editing and music are just about perfect. The only thing that rings false is the carelessness the family exhibits after Don Corleone's attack. They act a bit like amateurs. This begs for a DO-OVER (maybe they're waiting for another anniversary year to roll around to release a definitive edition). I refuse to buy the box set as it includes the inferior Part 3. Hopefully, when they release Part 2, they pay more attention to the quality of the transfer.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."
I never saw the movie before because I have no interest in "the Mob", New York, or gang politics. It took Brando's death, plus all the great reviews here and the #1 ranking at IMDB to prompt me to get this movie to add to 400 movies I have. The only thing I knew about it going in was there was a horse head in a bed, and Brando mumbled and played with a cat.

The movie has a long list of big name actors including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, and was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It seems to be filmed rather darkly with muted colors, though many posts here complain about the transfer.

I had big expectations for this movie, but at the one-hour mark I was so bored I turned it off. Later I started over with the commentary, which was a bit more interesting. I took a nap in the middle, then came back to finish this 3-hour exercise in tedium.

Mostly OK acting. Good photography. Famous theme. I liked 2 lines of dialog, but that's about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great. Poor DVD Transfer.
I have just viewed this movie for the first time, and for the life of me, I don't know what all the hype has been about. The acting is at most, mediocre (with some roles just downright poorly acted). The plot seems to come and go throughout the movie, and the violence is by today's standards very cheesy. I also kept wondering how Marlon Brando's character became so tied to this movie, as his role seemed very minor.

I give it three stars because, I'm sure when this movie was originally released, it was "Epic", but it just hasn't stood the test of time. Some of the scenes are well acted, but are overshadowed by lack of plot and some particularly bad acting as well.

Aside from the movie itself, Francis Ford Coppola should be embarrassed about the quality of this DVD transfer. It has several flaws (scratches, flickering, low lighting, etc.) and really looks bad on a large screen television. Perhaps he should let George Lucas have a go at a Special Edition version of his movie to "clean it up" and bring it up to date (Whatsa Heesa Deesa Meesa?) - of course I'm joking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Disney's Pocahontas Gold Collection DVD
Pocahontas is a good tale that deserves to have the Disney name. While far from the most entertaining in the Disney library, this one does have some of the most spectacular animation and imagery then any of them! The film is definatley not for the very young, there is much war violence (superficial, yes, but it's still there), including some blood-free shot wounds. The story is much more mature oriented, with Pocahontas trying to end the war between her people and the white-men for the sake of her love for John Smith.

The film has many songs, but only a few stand out - -Oscar Award Winner "Colors Of The Wind" is one of them, "Around the River Bend", and "If I Never Knew You" is the other - - the rest are catchy, but unmemorable numbers.

The "Gold Classic Collection" DVD edition of the 1995 film, has a mediocre picture. There is constant grain, and it is rarely perfectly clear. On the plus side, the animation is still able to be appreciated and the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is good.

Again, this is NOT the Disney movie to show little kids (it would probably be a complete fly-by for them), but it does have much appeal to an older audience who can appreciate the animation, and the Oscar- winning music. A true modern masterpiece.

3-0 out of 5 stars POCAHONTAS DVD REVIEW: What happened to the video???
I suppose this movie has a more meaning for me due to a past romance and the this to be the movie we shared, so I enjoyed it. Sure, Disney knows how to take some part of history and make it so fictional but one of the things I like about this movie is the detail they put into Pocahontas facial expressions. That feature always caught me.

Anyway, you either like the animation or you don't. The audio is very well done. No major sound effects but the music and the dialogue is the main things for this film. What about the video? The video is a shock. Where Tarzan bursts with a radiance of colors, not Pocahontas. What happened during the transfer? It's like a transfer from a video tape seen 10 times before. Not acceptable with a DVD! I can't believe the colors aren't superb.

Extras...well, I guess after the fans were upset that Disney didn't include any extras in their previous releases, now they are with their "Gold Collections". I like how the DVD has the two music videos especially "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams. There are a lot of trailers before the movies which you can fortunately skip over, a trivia game and DVD storybook like the Tarzan DVD and a fun with nature booklet which they should of added to the DVD. Otherwise it's better than what we got before from older Disney DVD's. So, we have the movie at above average, the special features in the C to C- range and the DVD Overall probably a B-/C+.

Otherwise, for a DVD from Disney, this movie deserved better. A better video transfer and they could at least added the making of Pocahontas or something. (sigh)...

Anyway, if you want to watch Pocahontas, get the DVD version. Even those it's VHS quality, you get those extras and good sound. If you don't care about the extras and just want to see the movie, then the VHS might be your thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Politically-correct racism
I wish my children had never seen this movie, but since I made the mistake of trusting Disney and since it reappears on TV frequently, I've used it as an opportunity to talk about the blatant (but politically-correct) racism woven through it. My point to my children: racism is wrong, no matter who it's directed at (a point that goes directly against the main theme of the movie).

In this movie, there is one and only one exception to the rule that all Native Americans are good and all English are bad. John Smith is the exception that proves the rule - other than him, all British are evil (and crude, dirty, greedy, etc.). The Native Americans aren't all quite perfect but all come around in the end, while the English are clearly rotten to the core, and the world would be a better place if they were all gone.

Get this movie for your children IF you want to teach them to use skin color as a way of predicting good versus evil. And don't worry, they won't get the wrong, racist lesson that dark skin is bad - they'll get the politically-correct lesson, that people with white skin are bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disney produces yet another inaccurate cartoon...
As always, Disney provides us with an hour-glass shaped, beautifully dashing, ever accomodating heroine, and a strong, handsome, brave, conquering hero; a romance story that is historically inaccurate, romanticized, racist, and sexist. "Pocahontas" was not her real name, and she was about ten years old. According to LEGEND, she saved John Smith's life - the woman of color saves the white man, while falling in love with him. According to REAL history, he was brought in to the village, well-fed and well-treated. Most likely, she simply talked with him while he was in her village. There was NO romantic relationship. She was actually kidnapped a few years later and held for ransom in Jamestown. She died of a White Man's disease. Disney has created a cartoon "Romeo & Juliet" story for children, and what hurts my heart the most is that people really believe that the Disney version is true. There are so many un-truths in the world, especially in our Media, and "Pocahontas" is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Story with a touch of History
In reality Pocahontas was the wife of another white settler named John Rolfe. She later became Lady Rebecca. We can say she fell in love with John Smith but their love story didn't workout.
The story of Pocahontas repesents us all Americans. That no matter how you look like, Black or White we are all foreigners on this land. The original Americans are the American Indians, cause they are already here when Columbus discovered America. As for this movie itself, I love it especially the music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars La decision de ser hombre

5-0 out of 5 stars In The Mouth Of The Wolf
Although it's English title is The Lion's Den, the actual translation of La Boca Del Lobo is The Mouth Of The Wolf. This is the most authoritative film on the Shining Path faction which terrorized Peru from the late 70's through the early 90's. The film is made entirely on location in Peru and by Peruvians. It is well made for a third world production and the acting and cinematography are as good and professional as any great independent film. Not only does this film depict the horror of the war against Peru's Marxist guerrilas, but it catalogues their actions and emphasizes death tolls in the most unorthodox but effective way. Most of all, the film's sentiment is achieved in that it is told through the eyes of a young soldier with lofty ambitions. Yet when he sees what his very own men are doing to the natives, he falls back in terror and realizes, as does the audience, that nobody has his hands clean. Moreover, this film greatly bulrs the distinctions between the good guys and the bad guys. The fact the terrorists are unseen and only suggested, further enforces the idea that there is a thin line between right and wrong and it is usually a mere matter of conjecture as to whom is the more benevolent, The Shining Path or the Peruvian Army? The theme of this film reaches far beyond anti-terrorism, it's strongest voice lies in the notion that both sides are still killers, no matter what their cause.

La Boca Del Lobo is a "MUST-SEE" for Peruvians and non-Peruvians alike. For war film buffs and antiwar philosophers equally. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Did Bendan Fraser really want to do this film?
Having been a lifelong fan of the old Dudley Do-Right cartoon series (He's my hero)(I'm 43)I found Brendans' portrayal very, very labored. The expression on his face for the most part was "do I really want to be here?". Sarah Jessica Parker would have been my 10th choice of ladies to play the part of Nell (I guess Sex & the City is where she belongs). Also being a Python fan, the inclusion of Eric Idle originally got my interest up....but sadly the role given him was a complete misuse of his comic genius....he would have been better suited as Snidley. The movie overall was somewhat enjoyable to watch, but I think I'll stick to watching the old cartoon series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wasted effort
The great, creative tongue-in-cheek humor of the original show is replaced with empty physical gags and fart jokes.

If that sounds hilarious, you just might like this movie.
