Best movie of 2001 and a great DVD to own.
Great works of art that challenge conventional notions often polarize opinion, and it's obvious that "Moulin Rouge" has done just that. The polarity of opinions seen here on Amazon mirrors the love-it/hate-it reactions the film generated upon release in Spring '01.

I think this is because "MR" reinvents that most sacred and traditional of genres, the romantic musical, and because the film has the audacity to take pop culture [and pop music specifically] seriously. Plus, the idea of watching Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, whatever you think of their acting, SINGING for more than two hours isn't intuitively appealing.

But I urge viewers to give this movie a chance if you haven't already, and I'd highly recommend buying the DVD if you already DO like the film from the theaters. This is a marvelous piece of cinematic entertainment and the DVD is a fantastic exploration of the medium and the source material. I applaud the director and his crew for delving so deeply behind the scenes.

Make no mistake: "MR" is a work of art. If you didn't like it, I posit that you didn't get it.

Love it or Hate it--it is a great film and an awesome DVD!
Yes, this is a film like most any groundbreaking or specific director's vision that will cause people to love it or hate it. People who like musical theatre have both hated it and loved it. People who don't like musical theatre have both hated it and loved it. It just depends on how the film grabs you. If you don't like the first 10-20 minutes--wait--because the film's tone changes. It's like ROMEO AND JULIET. The first part is a crazy, comical spectacle. The second half is a gut wrenching, beautifully filmed drama. The film is thrilling and majestic. The DVD is FULL of incredible extras. If you listen and watch how Baz and his creative team made the choices that became this film, you really understand how well thought out this film is. I love the film even more knowing that there is indeed an intelligent method to the madness. And hey, the film hold the National Board of Review Award, Golden Globes, and 8 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. Seems the Love it audience is bigger than the (vicious) Hate it audience. I love this film and especially its DVD extras.

Come what may...indeed...
Frankly, the first reaction for this movie is, musical...cheezy! I have to admit, it is hard to look for a really good musical nowadays, or at least up average would be fine for me. Then, I heard Nicole Kidman is going to star on this musical, so I firgured, what the heck, let's gie it a shot. Since she just had her divorce and such. I must say, I have had put my foot in my mouth for this. The movie was splendid. Despite her personal mishaps, Nicole has proven to be one of the best. She sings, with Ewan Mcgregor as her co-star and they have their work ut out for them.

This is a story of a poor writer (Ewan) in strive of getting his unobtainable object of desire (Nicole), who happens to be the main star of this circus theater show in Paris. They succumb into some sort of Forbiddened Love and they tried anything to be and stay together but fate have other plans for them. Nicole has to help her friend and boss from going bankcrupt and with that, she has to attend to this other rich guy, who owns the deed to the place. Help in the sense of be her compainion. Meanwhile, to cover up their affair, the Ewan has manage to create a play, due to mistaken liason earlier in the movie; therefore giving them the room to be together at least somewhere along the line.

I must add one thing.

The rich man gets what he wants, and if he can't have what he wants...nobody else will either.

An applause for this one.

This Proves That Oscars Are Bought
I wish I could have given this no stars. Unquestionably one of the 10 worst movies ever made, although it doesn't even deserve to be called a movie. A lacerated video clip more like it. Nominated for a bunch of Oscars, together with A BEAUTIFUL MIND(another overrated dose of sugar), it proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that those awards are completely political & utterly misguided. As many will agree, CHICAGO was everything this dismal effort so desperately yearned to be. A girlfriend of mine told me she cried when Satine(Nicole Kidman)died. I was incredulous. Who cared???? (I was overjoyed since it meant the ordeal was nearly over) With Richard Roxburgh apparently suffering from constipation coupled with Tourette's & Jim Broadbent(usually brilliant)doing some sort of Quentin Crisp/Tootsie impersonation, I would equate this experience with a 3 day migraine. What in God's name were they smoking in the editing room?

I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE ALL THE WAY!

This Is A Pathetic Movie
If Blues Brothers 2000 were made as a documentary about the Blues Brothers or a documentary about the musicians in the movie, then I might've given it some stars, but, as a movie, this is a horrible, pathetic, feeble attempt to recreate the magic of the first film, which is a near perfect comedy. If there were an "E.T." part II, it would probably suck as bad as BB 2000. Certain movies should not be tainted with sequeals. This movie has animation! What audience was this movie created for? If I wanted to see a film strictly about blues performances and blues legends I'll rent a documentary. Blues Brothers is about the characters and this poor excuse for a movie has none of the elements that made the original such an excellent movie. If you have never seen it and are a fan of the Blues Brothers please do not buy it, it will destroy your image of Elwood and "the band."

Controversal Movie, naked DVD
Well, let's get the ugly part out of the way. In trying to make a sequel to the beloved "The Blues Brothers," Landis and Aykroyd took a huge risk in a desperate money grab. The result is far short of perfect, and as a result the creaters have suffered a howling chorus of dreadful reviews. But step back and realize that anything short of the PERFECT sequel would have been critically thrashed, to say nothing of what the fans would have done (and did). Now one can see so many of the things that went right that could have gone horrifically wrong. In bringing John Goodman aboard, They refused to try to replace Jake, and instead created the new, likeable Mighty Mack, a much lower-key personality, and left Elwood in the driver's seat. I do want to say a second and point that Goodman is legitimately GOOD in this movie, without any handicapping. The same loony stunts are back. Then, ultimately, they DID remember the single best thing about the original movie, the music (as they adroitly pointed out in the first trailer). Here they have lined up a staggering array of musical talent, and the movie gets lively, upbeat feel from the marvelous sound.

Of course, they also did a lot wrong. J. Evan Bonifant, as Buster Blues, is a mysterious addition. Cab Blues is an even more bizarre addition, purely added, in my estimation, to cover another loss (Cab Calloway) and let them re-work the I-see-the-light-scene from the first. The movie hems a little TOO close to the original, and quite frankly, the first movie's plot was stretched almost transparently thin in the first telling, setting aside the second. Some of the cameos are bordering on offensively flat (Darrell Hammond's, in particular), and that really brings us to the sum of the movie: it has all the right parts, but somehow they don't fit together. But many of the parts are REALLY right.

But there a lot of friendly nods to the first film, and the movie keeps a fun breezy spirit. And really, on its own, without trying to make it stand next to the towering, built-up remembrance of the first, it is a fun movie with terrific music.

The DVD, though, is one documentary away from being a direct copy of the VHS release. Shame! Shame! At least the DVD lets you skip to the musical numbers.

Overall, it's a movie I liked an enjoyed, and like to go back to and watch every now and then (more than the original, mainly because its easier to skip scenes without a feeling of missing out). Not a great movie, but still something fun.

Mr Landis- you should be ashamed
Can't see how anybody who loves the original can rate this pathetic sequal.The worst aspects for me are the casting of a silly little boy as a 'third' blues brother , the rip off of virtually every plot line from the first movie & second rate musical interludes from former greats who look & sound like they're only in this for the money.

Don't buy this movie please .

A comedic action musical? An action-packed musical comedy?
I never watched the first one, so I'm not going to say anything about John Belushi, or "Was it better than the last one?" or any of that. If you saw the first one, you will be continually saying, "Duh, we know this backstory already," throughout the review, so you may choose to read a different one.
Elwood Blues is an old blues musician, and he has an interest in restarting the Blues Brothers band. He finds out that his "father" and brother have died, and without these key players, it takes a little doing to restart the Blues Brothers. One of the new additions is a little 10-year old who is presumed to be kidnapped by Elwood. The Illinois police are soon after them, and the Blues Brothers join a battle of the bands competition. When the police aren't chasing them, a band of Russian communists (and later, a group of guerilla, anti-U.S militants) are. One car chase stands out in particularly: a road block turns into a fiasco as something similar to a mosh pit of police cars develops. Some of the songs are absolutely purposeless, as if a series of commerical jingles and music videos were played spontaneously throughout the movie.
This movie has a little of everything. It's a featherweight (but certainly not light) on action and a definite heavyweight in comedy and music. This movie is a bit like a standard sports movie: a bunch of guys, past their prime, who used to play together, decide to get together once again and show the world who rules. It's a great comic musical, and one of the few musicals that isn't full of pickpockets or little girls singing in an orphanage (i.e. , Oliver Twist and Annie.)

Not as bad as they'd have you believe
OK, So this isn't as good as the first film. And how could it compare to a classic. But it's actually one of the best sequels of any great film.

Yes, the story is ludicrous, but it does still amuse. But in truth, the entire film is really just an excuse for linking great musical sets together.

The music IS magnificent. (The acting is awful, but since most of the cast are professional singers rather than professional actors it isn't really surprising.)

If anything the film is more of a homage to the original, taking everything (car chases, ridiculous plot) to the extreme. If you don't like the film the first time, watch it again. You might be surprised! ... Read more

Original "Annie" Movie One of My All Time Faves
"Annie" one of the all time classic movies of the '80's. They don't make movies like this anymore. "Annie" is a musical movie with a story behind it.

Annie, played by Aileen Quinn, is a red-headed orphan who dreams of life outside of the orphanage. Away from orphanage's head-caretaker. Miss Hannagin, played by Carol Burnett. Through some clever nugging Annie is chosen to stay with "Daddy" Warbucks, Played by Albert Fenny, for a week. Things take off from there.

Rounding out the great cast are Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Bernadette Petters and Geoffery Holder

"Annie," is not just a bunch of song and dance numbers thrown together to make a musical. Sure song and dance is there, brilantly I might add, but as a second element in the movie.

If you have not yet seen the original "Annie" movie; you are in for a treat. I for one, can not see anyone else in these landmark roles.

If, you are old enough to remember the original "Annie" movie. Here is your chance to own a classic. Recommended!

Schmaltzy but super
Easily the best version of Annie out there (and yes, I saw the play with Martha Raye as Miss Hannigan). This 1982 gem was the last hurrah for the genre of the big-budget feature movie musical. How can you help but smile at the thought of fifty orphans simultaneously breaking out into dance numbers?

Ten-year-old Aileen Quinn sings her heart out to the catchy tunes and will have you singing too, despite yourself. Albert Finney is a walking caricature as billionaire capitalist Daddy Warbucks, who learns that there is more to life than money. Anne Reinking puts in a good showing as his assistant, and you'll recognize others such as Bernadette Peters. But Carol Burnett steals the show as the drunken orphanage proprieter who hates little girls but goes ga-ga over any male, from the local cop to Mr. Bundles the Laundry Man. (This is rated PG rather than G for a reason!)

Very young kids may be frightened by a chase sequence in which the bad guys try to kidnap Annie, but there's plenty here to entertain both children and adults. As a child, I watched it a hundred times without catching allusions to the New Deal, the Bolsheviks, and bathtub gin.

Do not let your kids grow up acquainted only with Disney's dull 1999 TV-remake of Annie! The 1982 movie is twice as exuberant, larger than life, and makes for much better entertainment.

I saw the stage show of Annie, with my friend ******* as Grace, and she was fantastic. It bought a tear to my eye when she sang I THINK IM GOING TO LIKE IT HERE. This version however, needed my friend in it! All the cast were terrible, except for Ms Hannigan...who pulled a stunning performance.
That red head girl...well, lets just say that it sounds like a rat crawled down her throat and died.

I Still Love It!
I have done reviews for the new "special edition" DVD of "Annie" and also the Disney remake from 1999. Both of these were only worthy of 1 star but the actual film from 1982 really deserves 5 stars in my opinion. "Annie" was my favorite movie when I was a kid. It was always a special treat when my Dad would allow me to stay up late to watch it. At one point I had actually memorized the entire film line for line. For a little girl it's a fun movie with great songs. Now that I am older I can watch the film with new appreciation and really wonder why it didn't get better reviews when it came out. I may have figured out why that is though. I believe it had to do with the comparison between the movie and stage musical. The people who loved the live show seem to be partial to that where as most people who have only seen the movie, like me, think it's great. I believe the movie stands on it's own when not being compared to anything and had that comparison not been an issue it probably would have received proper reviews. I understand how people can be partial though. I definitely am when it comes to this film because it's what I know. Still, I can't see how certain aspects could go unnoticed. As I was older I was really able to appreciate Carol Burnett's performance as Miss Hannigan. I can't imagine anyone making this character come more alive. She's detestable while being entertaining at the same time. Disney really missed the mark on this character when they remade to movie. Another element I can really appreciate as an adult is the relationship between Annie and Daddy Warbucks and how it developed naturally throughout the movie. He starts out incredibly hard hearted, but through the charm of a dirty, almost homely, little orphan he sees there is more to life than just money and power. She truly wins him over. Because of all these things I still love watching this movie through the eyes of my inner child. It can cause me to get a little misty eyed, but maybe it's because I am a sentimental sap. There is just so much to enjoy from beginning to end. I am especially glad I was able to get a copy of this DVD edition before it went out of print because believe me, widescreen is really necessary with this movie. All my life I only saw it full screen and watching it on this DVD I was able to see all kind of little things I missed. It's worth trading in the extras for.

Gotta love Annie...
My childhood favorite movie. I actually wore out several VHS's as a kid because I watched it over & over. I still really enjoy it & now I'm able to watch this with my daughter & see how much she enjoys it. Wide Screen would've been nice but I think for the little ones Full Screen is better so I'm not going to complain about that much. The features are great & Annie is darling. Music is awesome & I think any little girl would fall in love with this movie. ... Read more

Let's "DO IT" for our country!!!!
When all you had is cable and South Texas HOT sun during the summer, a cool house and the hollow, fun, cheese lyrics of grease 2 kept you entertained. As you pop this DVD into your player, you are quickly reminded why you love to hate this movie and why as much as you hate it, you still can't keep the lyrics out of your head!
The DVD transfer does a decent job in capturing the base of the singing trio in "Mr. Sandman" in the shower, "Reproduction" (Where does the pollen go?) and the bike on "Who's that guy?". The blacks in this particular scene do NOT dissapoint. The visual quality is close to "movie-like" you feel transported back to the 80's and want to solve a rubiks cube while you watch the movie.
The highs in Johnnys Song "Walk, Talk like T birds" are GREAT! You want to see Michelle Phipher stradle a ladder with a phalic tree under her or see her dance and stradle the wind, in the courtyard while everyone ignores her crazy teen ways, this DVD delivers this GREAT cheesy 80's movie and puts it into a GREAT FORMAT! C-O-O-L. . . R-I-D-E-R!

I LOVE GREASE 2!!
I think part of the reason I love this movie so much is because I grew up on this version never seeing the original Grease until after this one. I love this movie! Perhaps also because I had a big crush on Maxwell Caulfield's charactrer "Michael" so that made it all the more enjoyable for me to watch but I loved the soundtrack too, "Who's that guy" when Michael first appears at the bowling alley in his leather clothes on his new motorcycle, or "Cool Rider" the song that Michelle Pfiefer's character "Stephanie" sang to let him know he had to be a motorcycle rider before she could even give him the time of day. Or the song at the end, "We'll be together" makes me smile everytime I hear it, and I love the song "Love will turn back the hands of time" at the talent show when "Stephanie" spaces out thinking of her mystery "cool" rider who had since swept her off her feet. I think I rented this movie atleast 3 times a week from when I was 7 years old till I was 10 (back when you could only rent for a day at a time), let's just say it drove my parents crazy but I didn't want to watch anything else, finally they bought it for me when it went down in price and now I am anxious for it to be released on DVD because my VHS copy is rather played out because I watched it constantly. I always stop to watch this movie no matter what I am doing if it comes on tv and it never fails that when I just watched my VHS copy it comes on! But if anyone ever finds out it's coming out on DVD please LET ME KNOW! I think everyone should atleast give this movie a chance and pretend you had never seen Grease cause I hadn't seen it until a year after I had watched Grease 2 a hundred times and I wasn't expecting anything, I expect the first to be different since I first saw the sequel so for me, Grease is not as interesting to me, I enjoy Grease 2 far more!! Give it a try, hope you enjoy it, for those who love Grease I can see that it might not live up to what you expected but don't expect too much and give it a good playing and just enjoy it for it's comedy, high school romance, and soundtrack that some people don't like but I love it and I think a lot of the songs are highly enjoyable. thanks.

"Who's that guy?" Who cares!
Tying "Life is Beautiful" for proof of miracles through movies, it is indeed a true miracle that Michelle Pfeiffer ever found work again after starring in this mess. Featuring such catchy ditties as "Who's That Guy?" and "We're Doin' It For Our Country," this was THE movie that started the stigma: "Sequels always suck compared to the original." Of course, this movie is well beyond suck; it blows.

"Grease" is the word again!
Yes,"grease" is the word again in GREASE 2. I could tell you why the sequel to 1978's highest-grossing film was disappointing. There's an entirely new senior class,set in 1961,two years after the original Grease gang graduated from Rydell High School. That means this class were sophomores during the original Grease era,unseen of course. This was Michelle Pfeiffer's first starring film. She appears opposite Maxwell Caufield,a foreign exchange student from Australia who becomes a T-Bird. Pfeiffer,is a Pink Lady of course. Those who returned for the sequel are Didi Conn as Frenchy who had dropped out and come back to repeat the 12th grade. Eve Arden as Rydell High's principal and Sid Caesar as the phys. ed. instructor. One memorable scene is the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies at a bowling alley singing,"We're gonna score tonight!"(sorry,I don't know the song title). Pfeiffer contributes her singing vocals to the soundtrack album on COOL RIDER. Another reason why this film flopped:it didn't even feature a reprise of GREASE,the theme song from the first film,performed by Frankie Valli and written by ex-Bee Gee Barry Gibb. The soundtrack was enitirely original. Imagine John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John,the stars of the first film,paying a visit to Rydell High in this film. This film could have gotten mixed reviews by the critics if that had happened. Since this film wasn't so great,there were no more sequels.

A musical with no good music..
This movie is not so far below the original on a dramatic level. And the dance sequences often surpass those in the original film for complexity and ambition, especially the opening one. Yes, it's a contrived Juvie D. romance about a straight-laced character trying to connect with a rougher edged hipster, but so was the original. Yes, the 'comedy' seems forced and added on, but that was true in the original too. Simply put, the original was a pretty weak, contrived lightweight of a movie. That is, when nobody was singing. The sequel -call it Grease 2: The Next Class, or Frenchy Gets a Two Picture Deal - is even more contrived and weighs less, despite a knowing, sharp edged performance by Michelle Pfeiffer (the only reason this thing still exists on video). But success or failure for any musical depends on ... drum roll ... THE MUSIC! Even the second rank stuff in the first picture (eg. Stranded at the Drive-in) is pretty tuneful and memorable. The songs in the sequel are so bad ("...Let's Bowl, Let's Bowl, Let's Rock and Roll!..." that they are improved by watching with the sound off. Even the show-stopper at the end sung by Michelle is pretty worthless, and it is the only number other than the opener that can be heard without suffering intelligence loss. The original was a huge hit and the sequel bombed. The soundtrack from the original was a huge hit spawning several top 40 radio hits. Nobody bought and no radio station played ANYTHING from the sequel. See a pattern? ... Read more

The happiest sound in its best version yet!
Reviled by some, beloved by many, consistently referred to as the most popular movie musical ever made, THE SOUND OF MUSIC more than fulfills the promise of its beautiful visuals and expert song numbers on home video via DVD. This edition tops the 1995 laserdisc by allowing the sparkling, exemplary design of its 70mm. Todd-AO frame to be exhibited with increased sharpness and resolution. The 4.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack is powerful and clean, but since this film was originally mixed for six-track magnetic stereo, it's curious why the effort wasn't made by Fox to split the surrounds! Nonethless, the film sounds terrific. The extra features make this package a bargain at the price. Full length commentary by director Bob Wise, with the musical numbers presented sans vocals, is a great touch. And the two documentaries are beautifully presented; full of facts and bits of arcane information that any fan will truly enjoy. A great movie, and a great DVD rendition. More like this, PLEASE!

Wonderful!!! One of the Best Musicals Ever Made!!!
First of all, I'd like to confess that I've probably watched this movie more than one hundred times in my lifetime.

"The Sound of Music" is such a popular movie that people can't enough of making fun of it, which is understandable: I mean, a nun, seven children, songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Austrian landscape. In reality, most of these people probably haven't sat down and watched this movie, because it is an absolutely unforgettable experience.

Julie Andrews is absolutely magical as Maria. When she runs on the mountaintop and starts singing the famous lyrics "The hills are alive...," it sends chills down my spine to this day. Christopher Plummer cuts a good figure as the captain but gave a rather stiff performance: he doesn't bring anything extra to the role. Eleanor Parker, as the Baroness, was wasted--a role like that was far beneath her talents. But the children were all wonderful, especially Charmian Carr who was charming as Liesl.

This movie is ultrasentimental and proud of it. But I'll stick with this rather than some of those one-dimensional slasher flicks which are in fashion these days. It has a plausible story, some of the world's most remembered songs, and the glorious Austrian and Swiss Alps in the background. Overall, I can't say anything other than I loved it.

The Hills Are Alive...Now and Forever
No matter how many times you've seen this 1965 musicalization of the 1959 stage classic, it's still a joy to behold. For me, there are many reasons. On location filming in Saltzburg heightens the story's magnitude. The casting of Julie Andrews as Maria Von Trapp was a coup for both 20th Century Fox and director Robert Wise. She's magnificent and ever so professional. Back then, this was only her third Hollywood movie. But she's a pro from start to finish. Everything she does it fraught with such emotion and conviction, you'd swear she was Maria Von Trapp. Opening up the stage play with several new scenes, sub plots, songs, characters and dialogue also benefits what could have been a very sticky situation. Finally, there's the DVD itself. This is the widescreen version that was shown back in theaters when the film first opened. It includes the intermission and the Act II opening music. With no formatting for television, you get to see everything in all it's technicolor glory. On video, half the Von Trapp children didn't fit on the televsion screen. Musical numbers lost there scope as did scenes where you had 13 characters in one room and only saw 7 on the screen. I highly recommend this DVD. But wait, there's more. The 87-minute documentary is awesome. So are segments showing scenes that were cut and up dates on how the kids look today.

Incredible movie, must see, but don't buy the one disc
First off. Think you have seen the Sound of Music? Well you haven't. I thought I had, many times. Of course it was always around Xmas with the commerical breaks. But that is a much edited version. There are small but significant cuts everywhere in that version. So this is a great thing to have. My 3 stars relates directly to the lack of extras on the one disc. The movie is 5+ stars, but the lack of extras warrants the 3 stars.

So this is a must buy. Also the commentary is very good here. But given the price for this on Amazon, just buy the 2 set version. I got the one disc version at a very good price so it is not a bad buy. But for $6 more, why not enjoy the double DVD? This is a must get for any movie fan, and if you are not into the extras, by all means buy this one. This movie, like all of Rogers and Hammerstein's work is emotional without ever being fake or sentimental. It is full of sentiment and completely honest sentiment at that, but never sentimentality. It totally puts to SHAME almost every director and producer and writer working in Hollywood today. Complete and total shame and disgrace. Nothing coming out of Hollywood today can hold a candle to this. Entire director's careers with academy awards can't even begin to even compare to just this one movie. So get some version, especially if you have young ones. Sit them down, and let them experience what a real movie can be.

This has been a great thing to share with my daughter.
I grew up with this video and watched it on TV every year. The songs have always stuck in my head. I even did the Sound of Music Tour when I was in Austria. But now I've got my daughter introduced to this beautiful music. This and the Wizard of Oz are her favorites.

I bought the easy piano scores for her to play the songs on the piano, and singing lessons on CD "Voice Lessons TO GO", by Vaccarino (They're great and a lot cheaper than private voice lessons!) for her, (even though I use them when she's at school). So she is confident to sing along while she plays her Edelweis and Do a Dear. We love it. ... Read more

5 Star Movie Lowered (Slightly) By Disappointing DVD
I won't go into the plot here, because, let's face it, if you haven't seen Grease by now, you probably won't ever see it. And you are missing out on a really fun film. That is the secret to this movie's popularity. It's just plain fun! It doesn't have a really great script, none of the performancies (with the exception of Stockard Channing) is anything above run-of-the-mill, but it's got a lot of great, catchy songs, a very likeable cast, and is just a treat to watch again and again. I was disappointed by this DVD release though, because it's exactly the same as the laser disc, only smaller and you don't have to turn it over. The cast interviews at the end are four years old, and this is really just a delayed release of the 20th Anniversary Edition on DVD. And what fan of Grease needs a cheap, paper booklet of song lyrics? Believe me, we know them all by heart. Truly the most profitable and one of the most popular musicals ever made deserves a better DVD package. The fans certainly deserve it too, having waited so long for this. Boo! to Paramount for, apparently, wanting to wait and pick our pockets again some time down the road when they release the two-disc set with all the extras this movie should have. At least it's in widescreen, which is a totally different viewing experience for anyone who hasn't seen it letterboxed or on the big screen yet. The musical numbers have a much larger scope, with dancers and other action on the sides that had previously been cut off. You will be surprised how many previously unseen guys are on the bleachers with Danny and the gang for "Summer Nights". And to anyone who is planning to buy the full-frame DVD--shame on you! You are truly missing out.

You CAN right a movie about rock&roll!
Most people would think that you could'nt write a good movie about rock&roll. This movie sure proves them wrong. The songs are great, and the movie is great.

As you can see, there are some VERY bad songs, but for the most part, the songs are pretty good. The whole movie was even better than the songs. The whole idea of the movie is a senior high schooler comes to the U.S. and goes to a cheap high school. There, she runs into a guy she met in the summer, who is in a car gang that is against another car gang. Throughout the year, this girl ( her name is Sandy) and her friends deal with the guy(his name is Danny) and his friends. The movie pretty much told about the "typical" high scholl senior's problems, except in a more 60's background. The movie actually took place in the 70's. At the end, Danny's car gang beats the rival gang in a car race, and at the end of the movie, the whole gang of guys and girls gets back together without any problems at the end of the year. The movie is all in all VERY good. Buy it today.

Anyway, "Grease" is one of my favorite movies. It's just one of those timeless gems that will never die (can't say the same for the sequel, though). Every song is a joy and the film couldn't have been casted any better. John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing; all involved give indelibly charming performances. A lot of great films came out of the 70's (The Godfather, A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Chinatown, Jaws, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, etc., etc...) but "Grease" is still able to hold it's own after all these years. A quintessential film to add to your collection.

As far as the DVD goes, well... it's typical of Paramount to stiff us with what could have been a solid release. If you take into account that almost everyone who buys the disc already knows all the songs and dialogue by heart, the studio could have done lots of fun things with the material. Alas, we only get a songbook (which is admittedly kinda cool) and a documentary. Oh, yeah. And a theatrical trailer. How rare. *scoffs*

A half-assed effort to bring "Grease" to a great medium notwithstanding, I'd highly recommend buying this.

"Summer lovin'... had me a bla-haaast..."

I love this movie
Firstly because it reminds me of a carefree and happy time in my life. I saw this in the summer of 1978 when I was 12 years old and the only thing I had to worry about was making sure I didn't have any overdue library books, keeping the lawn mowed and starting ninth grade in the fall. Secondly because there's some great pop music in this movie, _Hopelessy Devoted to You_ is one of the best pop songs about unrequited attraction ever written. Thirdly because of the subtext of this movie, the lesson this movie teaches you is that in order to get ahead you have to be a slut, just look at the way Olivia Newton John (who was 30 when this movie was made) turns from a good girl at the beginning of the movie into a leather trouser wearing slut at the end. Fourthly I love this movie because all of the actors in it are so obviously too old to be in high school. I figured as a kid that this was because the lead paint factory at the town of Rydell was dumping a lot of stuff into the water supply in those halcyon, pre-EPA days of the 1950s and the resulting heavy metal poisoning made the children of Rydell somewhat slow, which was why they were all still in high school even though they were in their late 20s and early 30s.

Greasy John isn't my cup of grease
As an Australian I find this movie extremely offensive. Why should Sandie have to change and become a greasy fat rude American. She should haved stay the way she was I reckon.

5 Star Movie Lowered (Slightly) By Disappointing DVD
I won't go into the plot here, because, let's face it, if you haven't seen Grease by now, you probably won't ever see it. And you are missing out on a really fun film. That is the secret to this movie's popularity. It's just plain fun! It doesn't have a really great script, none of the performancies (with the exception of Stockard Channing) is anything above run-of-the-mill, but it's got a lot of great, catchy songs, a very likeable cast, and is just a treat to watch again and again. I was disappointed by this DVD release though, because it's exactly the same as the laser disc, only smaller and you don't have to turn it over. Great movie, but no extras
I admit, I was not one of those folks who ran out to see South Park as soon as it hit the theaters. In fact, I didn't even run out to rent South Park when it was released on VHS and DVD. But I finally did rent it in a moment of weakness, and am so glad I did. A few minutes into the film I had to scrape my jaw off the floor, but then I laughed my head off for 90 minutes and promptly watched the film again. After I returned the rental, I bought the DVD, and still watch it whenever I need a laugh.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is, in a word, brilliant. From the Disney-esque musical numbers (skewered by the biting wit of the lyrics) to the I-can't-believe-they-just-said-that vulgar hilarity of Terrance and Phillip to the "Saddam is from Mars, Satan is from Venus" moments sprinkled throughout, South Park is the best piece of satire written in years, and is guaranteed to keep you in stitches.

The movie is set in, of course, South Park, home of our heroes Cartman, Kenny, Stan, and Kyle. The boys manage to worm their way in to a theater to see Canadian duo Phillip and Terrence's new R-rated movie, which is brimming with jaw-dropping language. It proves "educational" to the boys, and they're swearing with flair and gusto quicker than you can say... well... you'll have to imagine. From there, it's a short leap to horrified teachers, mortified parents, and then Mothers Against Canadians. And it would be criminal to give away any more of the plot.

Yes, the language is positively filthy.... Yes, the film ridicules networks willing to do anything for ratings, Hollywood families of fame, overbearing and misguided parents, and everyone in between.... Yes, there are many moments of plain grossness.... So if you're easily offended, generally uptight, or a member of any morally outraged group, this film is not for you. This film is ABOUT you. Find something else to watch.

But for everyone else: buy this movie. You'll laugh; you'll cry (well, maybe not cry...); it will become a part of you.

Last note: The only reason I rated this DVD 4 stars instead of 5 is the complete lack of extra features. The movie is certainly worthy of a 5 star rating, but the complete lack of extras for the DVD format, especially given this material that's just screaming for extras, is inexcusable. But I highly recommend purchasing the movie, anyway.

Incredibly funny!
Although not a highest-grossing film of the year, this movie was a surprise success when it was released. It has caused people like the writers of the Simpsons to reconsider making an animated feature film of Homer and the rest.

On the surface this is not much more than a long episode on South Park with slightly better effects. But under the hood they developed a lot of technology to create the film, and it has definitly smoothed the process for the show's production.

As for the plot, I'm sure it's been discussed to death, but I will say that the quality of the movie is at it's best! Terrance and Phillip (my favorite characters) play a starrng role, and the show wastes absolutely no time trying to explain to the audience who such-and-such is (except for a small blurb about Ike being Canadian). All of our favorite characters are in it, without it being a showcase. And of course, since it's a feature film, it's much more irreverent than what's on the public airwaves. But again, it's not a giant excuse to offend you. It's all done consistently and it remains hilarious.

Finally, as usual, Trey Parker is given full writing credits since he's usually the one that ends up physically typing the script. But like always the show is a full collaborative process between Parker and Stone. At least, this is what they publicly admit :).

Great cartoon.. yet anti christian
First off, i love south park. I love Terrence and Phillip's inmature fart jokes, cartmans loud mouth, how kenny dies in the movie, and how the usa goes to war with canada. But i hate how they make fun of christianity. It is morally wrong and as funny as the creators re, if they do not ask for forgivness, they will rot in hell. Then they will see how funny it is. If they stopped being anti christian, then more people would like it. That is why i am sticking with the simpsons, even though it has a little anti christianity in it. If south park changed there ways, it would be the best show and movie ever.

No, I'm not giving the movie itself 2 stars. The movie's actually one of the funniest things I've ever seen and was the first dvd I ever watched back in 1999. But the dvd itself gets 2 stars. All it had was 3 trailers and that's it. Which is why I posted this review/news-

So hold off on this and wait for the better edition, which is bound to have tons of features like commentary, making-of and maybe a deleted scene or two (I can't imagine what could've been deleted from this). There isn't any release date set for it as of yet, but I'm guessing it'll come out in November or December.

Totally outrageous
I remember when I rented this movie a few years back, and I tried to watch it at about 1 a.m. I had to turn it off....it was TOO funny....too much for my senses that late at night!!! The usual guys are here....Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, etc....with one very big difference.....they curse a LOT and dont bleep it out!!! As usual theres the fast rapid fire humor that South Park is known for.

So if you like it fast and raunchy, get a big bag of popcorn, a nice cold soda, and take a few deep breaths cause you will LAUGH!!! ... Read more

a great hoiday movie
After only seeing this movie twice, I had the catchy numbers Snow, Sisters, the Minstrel Number, Count Your Blessings, Choreography, and my favorite The Best Things Happen While Your Dancing stuck in my head for a week. Made in 1954, you no longer see the real dancing in movies, where the girls could dance in stiletos and still look beautiful and graceful at the same time. And the songs are filled with pure Christmas joy and love.

After saving Bob Wallace's (Bing Crosby) life, Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) teams up with the entertainer to form the team wallace and Davis. They woo crowds with their dance steps and catchy tunes. Soon they become a huge production, with shows filled with show girls and dancing guys.

One evening before leaving for New York before Christmas, Wallace and Davis stop by a club to see their old army buddy's sisters perform. Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy (Vera Ellen) Haynes are trying to make it big as well. Through some confussion and singing, the four end up going to Vermont together. They end up staying at the hotel of Bob and Phil's old army general.

I'm not going to give away what happens, but I do want to tell you this movie is worth watching. The dancing and singing is sensational, and the characters lovable. This is definitley a great Christmas classic. Oh and by the way, Rosemary Clooney just so happens to be George Clooney's aunt.

Back in 1954, director Michael Curtiz (1886-1962, who won the Oscar for Best Director for the 1942 film "Casablanca") directed a musical that has become a beloved Yuletide classic for many people (myself included): "White Christmas". With the all-star cast of Bing Crosby, Danny Kay, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen and Mary Wickes, the film is often regarded as an updated remake of the 1942 classic "Holiday Inn", which also starred Bing Crosby and featured the same classic Yuletide song, "White Christmas". Though the two films do have many similarities (they're both musicals with lots of song and dance and they both have two main male characters), there are sufficient differences in their respective plots to make each film a unique viewing experience.

"White Christmas" begins on a World War II battlefield with soldiers performing a Christmas show for their fellow soldiers. The two starring soldiers are Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye). During the performance, all of the soldiers in attendance pay homage to their commander, General Thomas F. Waverly (Dean Jagger). The film then moves forward to its present day of 1954 where it finds Wallace & Davis as being very popular and successful on-stage song & dance performers. After one of their performances, they go to a nightclub where they a performance by two beautiful sisters: Betty Haynes (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera Ellen). Bob & Phil become infatuated with the pair (Phil more than Bob). They meet each other and Phil sneakily arranges for himself and Bob to go to Vermont, where the Haynes sisters are going, instead of their planned destination for their next performance. Bob isn't too happy initially with Phil's subterfuge, but relents and enjoys the trip with the Haynes sisters to the Vermont ski lodge. Sadly, when they arrive, there isn't any snow; but they quickly discover who owns the ski lodge: their former commander, the retired General Thomas F. Waverly, who is assisted by his daughter Anne Waverly (Anne Whitfield) and Emma Allen (Mary Wickes). The unfortunate lack of snow isn't very good for the ski lodges business, but Bob & Phil decide to help the retired general in the best way that they know.

Also on the DVD is an excellent commentary by Rosemary Clooney. Sadly, "White Christmas" was Vera Ellen's second-to-last film after she decided to retire from acting.

X-MAS NOSTALGIA!!!!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE I WATCH THIS MOVIE EVERY YEAR AROUND X-MAS I LOVE THIS MOVIE. Bing Croons....Rosemary Swoons....Watch It In June!

This DVD should be held up as an example of what DVDs are all about.The transfer and restoration of this 50 year old film is superb. It is the reason we are willing to spend a little more to upgrade from VHS and are awed when we see the wonderful results. Filmed in "VistaVision", the widescreen picture lets you take in every scene of this wonderful classic from edge to edge. The picture is clear, sharp and in glorious technicolor.The colors are beautiful and vibrant.
You have the choice of viewing it in DD5.1 surround or the restored Mono. For those looking for some special features, Rosemary Clooney helps out with a retrospective interview and also commentary. There are English subtitles for those needing them and may also be viewed in French(mono).

The film is a treasure in itself. Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye,Rosemary Clooney,and Vera-Ellen are the stars of this 1954 musical with songs by Irving Berlin that you'll want to sing along with and keep humming long after the film has ended. Directed by Michael Curtiz it's a feel good film that although takes place during the Christmas season, is one that you can pull out and watch anytime of the year.

Bing and Danny were Army buddies, now a successful song and dance team and are out to help their favorite old retired General(Dean Jagger),who is having trouble coping with retirement. The General is now running a country inn in Vermont, but the big problem is there is no snow to bring up the tourists. Bing and Danny to the rescue, as they turn the inn into a showcase of talent, and fall for the Haines sisters along the way. Can these wonderful voices also bring the snow out of the sky?...well..you know.

This film is filled with Berlin's wonderful tunes. When Bing takes Rosemary's little hand in his and croons "Count Your Blessings" to her..well it's movie heaven. Rosemary also treats us to several numbers, Vera-Ellen does some fabulous hoofing, and Danny clowns and keeps us smiling like only Danny can. And how much fun is it watching Bing and Danny do the "Sisters" number together?...alot! Then there's the goose bump evoking, wonderfully nostalgic scene of the four of them singing "White Christmas" together with the Winter Wonderland of Vermont as a backdrop.I would be remiss if I didn't mention the wonderful character actress Mary Wicks, she's a great busy-body who causes misunderstandings, and also keep an eye out for George Chakiris and Barrie Chase.

The Classics are the Best
My parents were Bing Crosby fans, so I grew up watching this movie. It is a jewel in Paramounts crown. Two ex soldiers team up for a stage act, along the way they meet another stage act, sisters. They all end up traveling together by train to Vermont where the sisters are performing for the christmas holiday at a ski resort. When they arrive, they find no snow and very few customers, and the general that Crosby and Kaye served under. Needless to say, they try to help out, and in doing so, they reawaken the spirit of christmas and giving in everyone. It isn't the best quality film, the sound is acceptable but not exceptional, but the story is as great in 1954 as it will be in 3004! ... Read more

great movie, lousy copy
If you've never seen Little Shop but love humor on the edge, this is more than worth the money (though I bought the same copy from another source for a dollar less).

But, if you love film, this copy is abysmal, not even close to Corman's original. There's dirt on the film, contrast is limited (though the movie is watchable) and detail is definitely compromised. It's recorded in VHS EP mode.

Corman made some great films, this title is arguably the best of its genre, and I hate to think that the original may be lost or missing, and this is all we have left.

It may have been shot in two days, but it was excellent B/W not so long ago.

Flower Power fans unite!
This is Roger Corman's FLOWER POWER epic. It has something for everyone:Jonathan (Purple)Haze plays Seymour K (like Kafka's great Post-Modern hero)who falls into the existential trap of your basic Vampire Plant. Jackie Joseph (an Audrey Hephburn "ringer")essays "Helen of Skid Row" role as Audrey Fulquard. Mel Wells brings depth to underrated Dostoyevskian role of Little Shop of Horror's proprietor, Gravis Mushnik. Much has been said about how this Corman classic influenced directors like Coppola and Scorsese. But its budgetary excess(2 days and a night, to knock-off a typical, blood-devouring daffodil drama)probably offended artistic propriety. Remember: it took Francis Ford C. 10 years to complete APOCALYPSE NOW!...

Technically, art direction and production values of this proto-work have to be studied to be appreciated. The sequence where hapless Seymour K is pursued by police agents Fink and Stoolie through a junk yard full of tires and toilets belies unnecessary interpretation other than to observe the angst on Seymour's face when he pops-up through a broken commode. Finally, there's the celebrated role of Jack Nicholson who would come to fame in the Hippie saga, "Easy Rider". If you're a fan of DENTAL QUEST(who isn't?), LITTLE SHOP of HORRORS deserves its mythological repute on this segment alone.Fans of Gravis, Seymour K, Audrey I & II, unite to restore this archetypal film to the peerless status it deserves......

Wrong movie reviewed
Your review of Roger Corman's low-budget "Little Shop of Horrors" by James G. Mack actually reviews the musical version, made many years later. You need to correct that.

I haven't seen this version, so the stars are "just because".

Wrong Description
I purchased this item for my friend who speaks fluent Spanish. The description read "dubbed in Spanish". After speaking to my friend after Christmas, he told me that the movie was in English, with Spanish subtitles. I was embarrased, but he obviously didn't want to hurt my feelings, so he just said it was OK. I just let it go but I think the description should be changed. It just was so embarrassing for me. ... Non-Prince fans need not apply
This is almost not a movie. What I mean is, it plays like a bunch of music videos with tidbits of plot thrown in between.

If you're reading this, I take it you have an interest in Prince... or at least Morris Day and the Time. The soundtrack CD is really great, and if you really spend enough time listening to it, it kind of paints it's own picture in your mind. I don't know if that sounds crazy, but I bought the CD when it came out-- a couple months before the release of the movie. The music is so detailed and vivid, I imagined what the movie would be like. Ultimately I was dissapointed with how it actually turned out...

"Purple Rain" towers above this movie, and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it (purple rain) had a screenwriter and director separate from Prince. With "Graffiti Bridge", Prince bit off more than he could chew by writing/directing/starring. I think there were some good ideas here that definitely needed some shaping.

Morris Day is the scene-stealer, as he was in "Purple Rain", though again I'm not so sure Prince wrote him as strong a part as he deserved. This movie is a semi-sequel to "Purple Rain"-- which was a bad idea. "Purple Rain" had a realistic feel to it. "Graffiti Bridge" has a slightly surreal feel. Plus, unlike "Purple Rain", it was shot almost entirely on soundstages-- resulting in a very set-bound, manufactured atmosphere.

In closing, if you're a Prince fan check it out.

Listen, if you are Prince fan, I really think that you will enjoy this movie. I have enjoyed so much of his music over the years, so you might it enjoy the music, colors and style of this movie...check it out!

Another way of thinking
I have the laserdisc of this movie. The storyline has quite a few problems, the acting also lacks direction. Years ago, before the premier of this movie, my pal, Andre, asked if I thought it was going to be any good. I replied "Who cares, its a vehicle for another Prince album." Forget the storyline on this one folks, enjoy the music! Besides New Power Generation and Thieves in the Temple there's great music by The Time, Tevin Campbell, Mavis Staples and George "funkadelic" Clinton.

The sentimentality is nauseating.....who told Ms Chavez she can write????...........she can't!!.....and she cetainly can't act or sing either. Prince is his usual, affected, camp self.....and who on earth told him he can act......????.......will these star struck fools never learn??.Their egos must be huge to think we'd fall for such dreadful rubbish..........

Have you kissed your roach today?
Is it possible that people exist who are so myopic, so unable to think outside their own sanitized box, that they fail to see and feel the charm of this movie? Of course, I agree that roaches are most appreciated by humans when seen on the bottom side of a shoe, schmooshed. The movie isn't trying to make you boycott Raid. [But, as the film points out, these hardy little creatures will probably be around a lot longer than our own immune 'defested' species.] A plot in this film would have just been distracting. There is no philosophy being preached here, no deep meaning, no overt or covert agendas. Just fun!

The movie is great on many counts. Hear are just a few examples:
-Computer graphics that are nothing short of brilliant.
-A church organ made of lipstick.
-Songs about the healer holding your feeler (while Joe makes love to Lilly!).
-A roach version of Ester William swimming and singing in Joe's toilet.
-A roach sitting on a tube of Prep-H and saying, "What's up his butt?"
-Expert harmonies throughout the film sung with clever (but not overly clever) words, a la The Chipmunks.
-A phrase like, "That tickles!" having, well, a new slant.
-Cute, if predictable, comments made by the roaches.

The film turns traditional values upside-down in a hilarious way, without being pedantic.

The film isn't as serious as a Sondheim lyric, as popular as a Lloyd-Weber musical, as beautiful as a Les Miserable melody. But it doesn't try to be. And it doesn't need to be. It allows the viewer to, for perhaps a too brief period, forget about his or her confining values and exhausting proprieties, and just be entertained. After an escape like this film, we may indeed return to our severe or drab realities refreshed, much like a good night's sleep can make one more alert the next morning. ... I believe that entertainment like this, in appropriate doses, could be just what the world does need....

Jerry's best movie!!
This is my favorite movie of all time! It's humorous look at New York city is hilarious. The animated cockroaches are fun to watch singing and dancing! (Funky towel!) And, of coarse, Jerry O'Connell, whom is my favorite. MTV did great making it's first movie here. My only complaint was that there was no sountrack made! ???? Watch it!!!! Ralph and Rodney will thank you.

A sequel, please!!!

A Five Star Cult Classic Ruined
First let me say, I agree with most reviewers. Joe's Apartment is a movie for the "Far Side" crowd and I loved it. But who was the dirty rotten SOB that decided to release it in "Full Screen" format? There is too much going on in this film to butcher it by omiting the widescreen format. This Will probaby be only one of two or three DVD's that I will ever buy in this format. I'm not a movie snob I just want to see "Everything" I saw in the theater. Especially in a campy gonzo movie like this. They ruined some of the visual jokes simply because we can't see them anymore.


If it was up to me, I would slap every person who makes the call to release good or even bad movies in "fullscreen mode" we are all cheated when this is done. Rant's aside, if this is the only way I'll ever get Joe's Apartment then so be it. But I wish more reviewers would stand up and tell the Movie industry where to stick "Fullscreen" especially when we are continuously pushed to buy HDTV and widescreen TV's. ... Read more
