5-0 out of 5 stars Very Worthwhile
My husband and I watch these videos a couple times a month. Despite the fact that we've both read many books on quantum physics, space, astrology, etc., we still find these very informative if for no other reason than to remind us about some of those stunning details we all forget about our vast universe. My personal favorite is the Black Hole video since they do a wonderful job explaining how gravity wins, etc. It's a great set for children who are beginning to get the concepts of our great expanse. We look forward to sharing these with our children when they're a bit older to understand. Truly a wonderful series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless Video
Of all the video studies I have seen this one is most accurate and most priceless, taking the viewer on a tour of the artist's life from his illegitimate birth to his death at a very old age. Orginally produced in Italy with Italian and British actors, this movie which spoke Italian has the same dialogue well translated into English, allowing the viewer to understand the true depth, drama, wry wit, and humor of Italians.

Leonardo Da Vinci was a tragic figure to whom painting came as natural as breathing, giving his portraits a life like quality that was niether equalled nor excelled even by his contempory, Michaelangelo. Da Vinci's fascination with mechanics, anatomy, the weather, flight, and all are well presented in dramatic fashion, allowing the viewer to share in his inpiration and lament in his sorrow at not having accomplished all he had hoped to with his brilliant mind. Leonardo Da Vinci's competition with Michaelangelo is all well documented.

Questar's presentation is well worth the money spent on it. In my opinion it is priceless and should be viewed by all who love and study the Renaissance and Leonardo Da Vinci.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all Fans of the Maestro
How can anyone capture the complexity of such a staggering and legendary figure as Leonardo da Vinci? This massive docudrama gives its all, and will probably never be surpassed. It is an excellent treatment of Leonardo's tulmultuous life, both highly informative and entertaining. The device of having the narrator himself step into the scenes to give context and anecdotal information works very well in counterpoint to the dramatic illustrations of episodes in his life. The narration makes a point of separating the legends (started by Vasari and others) from the facts, the acting is good, and there are many added, startling touches that are fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Made in Italy in 1972, with superb acting from Philippe Leroy and supporting cast. What is most fascinating, however, are the reconstructions of Leonardo's many artistic and mechanical masterpieces, some of which have been lost. The costumes, the sets and camera are all flawless. One of the best documentaries of all time.

1-0 out of 5 stars I've seen better...
After reading The DaVinci Code, I wanted to watch a biography about DaVinci, so I purchased this movie. It was made sometime in the 1970's and the screen quality (even on DVD) is horrible. What's worse is the awful overdub. At the beginning of the movie an announcer explains that there is not a lot of information on the childhood of Leonardo DaVinci, but this is what could have happened...and they create little childhood for DaVinci. I thought this would have had biographers and mini dramatizations on DaVinci's life...not a full movie recreating his life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!!!
This DVD is focused more on the historical aspect of Da Vinci's life. It is very comprehensive and will give you great detail about his life. I really recommend this DVD to any Renaissance fan or anybody that want to witness our true potential as human beings. Da Vinci invented the parachute before people could fly or even thought about it...
I was in particular fascinated about the extra material in this two DVD package, offered a more artistic information about his masterpieces.
Any Da Vinci fan will love this DVD although I think it still does not truly reflect the maestro's legacy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars England will never be the same
This movie will appeal to those who enjoy Jane Austen productions like Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensability. It is set mostly in England of the late 1800's/early 1900's among the aristocracy, tracing the plight of four "noveau riche" American girls in English society..

The movie opens in America where the girls are scorned by the old money for being new money. One of the girls manages to attract the eye of a black sheep second son of an English lord, and the rest of the girls follow her to England after her marriage. The hope is that after spending a few months in the esteemed society of the English nobility, the New York aristocracy would have no choice but to accept the girls and their families into NY high society. While this would have worked, in England, however, things do not go as planned.

Unlike Jane Austen's movies, where the girls always make good marriages in the end, and the bad marriages are always portrayed in a comical way, The Buccaneers portrays events in a much darker, more realistic way. The aristocracy (which at this point in history is suffering, financially) is preying on the young women for their money, and the young women, some of them, are stalking the men for their titles. Most marriages are not made for love, and even in those that are, there is a price to be paid to maintain respectability. With main characters also including a governess, a high-priced mistress, and an un-married matchmaker, this movie also explores the alternatives for women who didn't wish to marry, and the very stiff consequences facing a woman who wished to be free.

This is a beautiful, provocative movie.

Elvis: The Concert Collection includes three shows: '68Comeback Special, One Night with You, and Aloha fromHawaii.

Five years before he achieved broadcast history with his legendary 1973 globalsatellite telecast, Aloha from Hawaii, Elvis Presley brought a lessgrandiose but far more urgent mission to '68 Comeback Special. Isolatedfrom his original audience after a long sojourn on Hollywood soundstages, andthreatened by the vibrancy and social gravity of rock, the King sought nothingless than to reclaim his throne. Now this Christmas season network special loomsas the Memphis icon's most substantial achievement as a stage performer. If thecandy-colored sets and hyperactive choreography of its larger production numberssmack of its network packagers' desperation to be hip, Elvis himself rises to ariveting, assured performance at the peak of his powers. Looking fit andrelaxed, and sheathed in black leather, he covers a shrewd song listencompassing early rockabilly hits, gospel (albeit rendered unintentionallyhilarious by its florid dance routines), and comparatively restrainedballads.

Originally taped for '68 Comeback Special and never seen during hislifetime, the astonishing live performance One Night with You couldaccurately be described as Elvis unplugged. Taped in a small studio, the sessionis a no-frills, intimate presentation of the Memphis rocker jamming with four ofhis earliest band mates, revisiting early favorites in a relaxed and unrehearsedsetting. With the musicians seated in a circle, facing one another whilesurrounded by a small but rapt audience, One Night with You is farremoved from the more conventional staging seen elsewhere in his videography.Elvis's warm interaction with his old allies meanwhile refers directly back tohis earliest stage and TV work in trio and quartet configurations. For fans, thecomeback special itself still looms as an unsurpassed feast of Presley music atthe artist's peak. But this 53-minute companion, first aired by HBO, stands onits own as the tenderloin.

Fans still remember the ambitious 1973 network TV special Aloha fromHawaii as a zenith in Elvis Presley's performing career, punctuated by itsextra-musical achievement as the first global satellite broadcast devoted to asingle entertainer. Both the broadcast and its companion album captured the Kingin his most grandiose persona, fueled by Hollywood scale and Vegas glitz, as acaped pop superhero. He may have looked trim, but posthumous accounts confirmwhat a second look suggests--on this evening, Elvis was alternately overwhelmedand distracted, bravura renditions of signature songs (most triumphantly, the"American Trilogy" medley originated by Mickey Newbury) offset by less-focusedreadings. Fans may still savor a generous and diverse song list, but viewedbeside Presley's earlier, more consistent performances, this legendary concertanticipates Presley's imminent decline. --Sam Sutherland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Three Best Elvis Videos!
After years of making bad movies in Hollywood, Elvis returned to live performing, starting with the '68 Comeback. One of the sessions taped at NBC was released as "One Night With You." Here you will find both exciting performances on seperate tapes. They're great, even though the Comeback tape is missing one song, "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" Still, it is a piece of history showing Elvis in black leather singing all his old songs with his original band. One Night With You is tremendous as well, with a variety of hits.

Five years after the mighty Comeback, he did another TV special, "Aloha From Hawaii." This one is missing songs too, but is a highlight of Elvis' '70s career. These three Elvis videos are among the best concert films you can get. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Indepth Lecture of Eastern Myth by Joseph Campbell
This is a 5 video set of Joseph Campbell lectures hosted by Susan Sarandon, that looks at the mythology of Hinduism, Buddhism, Kundalini Yoga, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Campbell shows that all these mythological images and stories are useful as long as they are recognized as images and not the reality. When one confuses the eternal and transcendent with the physical and ego-self enlightenment cannot be attained. And he refers often to Christian mythology and shows how similar it is to that of the East. The difference is Hindus don't believe there was an actual egg that broke open and 9 elephants came out (which is part of the mythology). They know it's symbolic; problem is many if not most Christians can't see their own mythology and take it literally.
He covers many profound spiritual ideas including death, the sutras, and the shakras. And the shakra at the top of the head is nirvana, when we realize we are one with the universe in the cosmic consciousness of the eternal present. So these myths are great to point the way. They are NOT what the way points to.
For as Lao Tzu says, those who speak (of what the way points to) do not know; those who know do not speak.

4-0 out of 5 stars superb overview on eastern religions and their implications
An inpiring journey through eastern perennial philosophy by the man who could turn out to be the most important thinker of the twentiest century. 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Human Sexes": The Answers You've Been Looking For
This video series provides a unique and rational map for understanding the complexity of human sexual relationships. Why are women attracted to men in nice cars? Why do people have affairs? What makes some men/women more physically attractive? These and many other quandries of the eternal male/female delemma are answered in logical, SCIENTIFIC terms. For men, it is (finally) a clear explination of the mysterious female psyche. For women, it is an honest exposure of what makes boys (men) be boys. For both, it is an excellent reference point for further discussion and exploration. In a time of conflicting gender roles and stereotypes, this series provides welcome clarity.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great conversation starter with some flaws
Desmond Morris's videographies on human behavior and sex are quite popular, and with all the breasts no wonder. He's got a good, balanced-seeming approach and has a way of talking about embarrassing topics in a way that you don't cringe, plus you are learning the whole time. The only problem is, at the end, you've learned a lot about women in all sorts of different countries, but you haven't learned a lot about men. So it's a little unbalanced. All the same, it's a terrific video series that I recommend strongly; just be sure if you're really interested in the human sexes you don't stop with just this video. ... Read more

Two of the best politically themed Simpsons episodes, "Lisa's Substitute" and "Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington," have already been released on video. But that still leaves this formidable slate of six episodes. Topping the ticket are "Sideshow Bob Roberts," in which Bart's "mortal enemy," Sideshow Bob, becomes mayor of Springfield; "Trash of the Titans," in which Homer, "the last angry man," is elected Springfield's Sanitation Commissioner on the platform of "Can't someone else do it?"; and "Two Bad Neighbors," in which "local oaf" Homer squares off against his new neighbor, former President George Bush ("Then we'reagreed; there'll be trouble"). This three-volume set also brings to the party"Duffless," in which Homer agrees to go one month without his precious beer ("I never realized how boring this game is," a sober Homer remarks during a baseball game), and "I Love Lisa," in which a valentine from goodhearted Lisais misinterpreted by Chief Wiggum's pitiable son, Ralph. By a strictlyconservative interpretation, neither has much to do with politics, but whyquibble? "The Trouble with Trillions," in which the IRS leans on Homer tosqueal on his friends, is a rare clunker, but only by the peerless high standards of The Simpsons. Each volume can also be purchased separately. --Donald Liebenson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A glorious, satisfying "D'OH! "
Don't get me wrong: I loved almost every single episode of "Seinfeld." But I cannot stress it enough - for my money, "The Simpsons" is the best show in the history of television . . . EVER!

Even when he's relegated to the sidelines, Homer Simpson is the glue that holds this marvelous achievement of pop culture together. The ultimate selfish, oafish, boorish, and just about every other pejorative -ish you cand find, Homer's sole redeeming quality is his childlike quality and this, ultimately, is why he is such an endearing character. Comparisons to Archie Bunker are misplaced. Homer may be ignorant, but there isn't a mean-spirited bone in his body, that ultimate tribute to flabbiness.

The episodes in this volume, given their "political" nature, include some of the most subtle, intelligent and all around hilarious writing in the show. That such a marvelous, rich and textured piece of entertainment came out of TV is little short of a miracle. Buy this now and enjoy it in the intimacy of your home with a cool, refreshing Duff beer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Simpsons At Their Finest
This is one product that is worth every penny of the price, and then some! From the 1st episode to the last, every second is pure gold. "Sideshow Bob Roberts" is an excellent play on the Republican party, but never gets too offensive to be enjoyed. "Trash Of The Titans" is a humorous, wacky episode with a classic Simpsons musical number. "Two Bad Neighbors" is a very funny episode, in which George Bush moves in across the street and fueds with the Simpsons. This episode is , in some ways, a form of revenge on Bush, who badmouthed the Simpsons in a 1991 televised speech. Revenge is sweet, and in this case, excrutiatingly funny. "Duffless" is the absolute best episode of all time, and I mean of any series. This episode itself is worth the money you pay for all six episodes! I've seen it dozens of times and I still laugh. "I Love Lisa" is another classic, this time with a Valentine's Day theme, and it has my favorite character Ralph as the star, so I can't help but love it. Finally, "The Trouble With Trillions", while dropping the standard some, contains many funny moments making it a worthy watch. This set is a perfect 10. I recommend it for anybody.

3-0 out of 5 stars Politics, Schmolotics
I pretty much mirror the opinions on this boxed set as the other reviewers: there's some decent material, but it's not exactly very "political." Which is really a shame, because 'The Simpsons' have offered some of the best political satire on TV -- Namely, 'Mr. Lisa Goes To Washington' [Season Three], '2 Cars in Every Garage, 3 Eyes on Every Fish' [Season Two], 'Last Exit To Springfield' [Season Four], 'Sideshow Bob Roberts' [Season Six], and my three side-splitting favorites, 'Mr. Spritz Goes to Washington' [Season Fourteen], 'Homer Bad Man' [Season Six], and 'Citizen Kang' from 'Treehouse of Horror VII' [Season Eight]. If you'd really like a more accurate taste of political comedy that the Simpsons offer, I'd recommend looking up these episodes on your local TV Guide and TiVo'ing them.

However, for a mixed-bag collection, this box set is admittedly a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have it
It's a good thing for a Simpson adicted, but if you aren't, buy it anyway, there are several great episodes that oyu and your family can watch it on the spare time. It brings to you episodes like "Sideshow Bob Roberts", "I love Lisa", "The Trouble with Trillions", "Trash of the Titans", "Two Bad Neighbors" and "Duffless", where Homer promisses Marge that he will stop drinking bear during a month. It's a great Boxed set, you must have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Ullman shorts?
I am an avid fan of the Simpsons, and I can safely say that I have seen every Simpsons episode ever televised. Now, I consider the episodes in the political pack to be some of the best the show has ever had, and with good reason. While there is a lack of political content in the episodes, that does not hold this collection back. However, there is one major drawback to this package: there are none of the Simpsons shorts from the Tracy Ullman Show. Those are one of the main reasons I buy these packages, so I was quite upset when there were none. Nonetheless, this is a great Simpsons package that belongs in every fan's collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping Up Appearances Giftsets
These tapes are addictive, they are so funny! This well-meaning, self-pronounced "upper crust" does her best trying to function in her middle-class world, with her royal standards - while her husband, friends, and eccentric relatives duck and dodge. Hyacinth Bucket (she insists it's prounounced "Bouquet") is wildly popular in England, and equally hysterical here in America. My parents watch an episode a day, I can hardly borrow a tape from them - they miss their "Hyacinth Fix!" - I am buying both giftsets for my Inlaws. They will fall in love with the Bucket family as we have.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love you, Hyacinth!
Is there a more funny actress on the planet than Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth? If there is, I've never encountered her. If you're a fan of this masterful British television series, then this is an absolute "must have" purchase. Even though I've watched these programs dozens of times each, I never weary of them. This is quality acting and writing of the highest order.

Patricia Routledge as "that Bucket woman" is arguably the second-greatest TV comedic actress of all time (I supposed Lucille Ball would have to get a nod for first place). Certainly she is the greatest British actress in a comedy series. Her timing, expressions and mannerisms are simply superb. Her interplay with Richard, played divinely by Clive Swift, is always absolutely hilarious. How many times will you say, "poor Richard!" while watching Hyancinth's ridiculous social-climbing antics? And my favorite character of all, the fat, sloppy guy with a heart, Onslow, played to perfection by Geoffrey Hughes. Don't you just love how he always says "Oh... nice!" with that delicious sarcastic edge?

They're all here: beautiful, dipsy Rose, the sex-addicted Daddy, the McCartneyesque Vicar and his cute-as-a-button wife and the cringing neighbors. It's impossible not to fall in love with the entire ensemble cast. This is television without equal and the quality on this casette is exceptional. Enjoy it as much as I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant!
There is only one way of describeing Keeping up Appearances and it's 'Simply Brilliant'
The only thing in the world i can think of that surpasses it is Bottom.

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular English comedy.
If you enjoy English comedy, you will love this one. The descriptives that Hyacinth repeatedly refers to things/people are totally hilarious. The sister "Violet - with a Mercedes, swimming pool and room for a pony." Or her "Matching navy blue Executive luggage with real leather embellishments". If you haven't seen any of her episodes, you should. Then you can watch her call on her "executive slimline wall mount phone with one touch redial".

Just the introduction of each episode will clue you into everything that you need to know to enjoy the show to its max.
She is just a character whom wishes everyone would have social graces and of course they don't, especially her one sister Daisy who is only one step from being trailer trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't stop laughing!
This VHS collection contains 10 entertaining installments from the successful British comedy "Keeping Up Appearances". For those who are not too familiar with the series, "Keeping Up Appearances" is about Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced bouquet) and her attempts to climb the social ladder at any cost. She tries her best to reach the top of the social strata but always seems to stumble, usually with a little help from her poor but down to earth relatives and their problems. Some of the best episodes are "Half A Camel", "Rural Retreat" and "Riparian Entertainment". In "Half A Camel" Hyacinth wants to impress a woman named Mrs. Henderson with her husband Richard's talents in the hopes of securing a position for him in her company. But her sister's boyfriend stops by and leaves a gigantic dog in Hyacinth's driveway. She and her neighbor Elizabeth try to move the dog with hilarious results. In "Rural Retreat" Hyacinth drags her husband out to look for a nice country cottage to purchase. Things don't go exactly as planned when she and Richard encounter strange neighbors and a variety of lively animals. In "Riparian Entertainment" Hyacinth plans a picnic by a river with an elaborate spread of gourmet treats. But a series of mishaps change their plans drastically. This is a great collection of episodes from this hilarious comedy. Patricia Routledge is great as Hyacinth Bucket and Clive Swift is perfect as Hyacinth's long-suffering husband Richard. Also stars Josephine Tewson as Hyacinth's friend and neighbor Elizabeth who always seems to spill things when in Hyacinth's house (who could blame her for her frazzled nerves?) If you're just discovering this series you might want to start with a smaller collection of episodes first to see if you like it. "How to Enhance Your Husband's Retirement" contains 3 episodes and is a good introduction to the series. ... Read more

Family secrets, scandal, thwarted love, intriguing characters, and great clothes: what more could an Anglophile want for a satisfying series of evening entertainment? The House of Eliott, which originally aired in the U.K. from 1991 to 1993, has it all. Stella Gonet and Louise Lombard star as Beatrice and Evangeline Eliott, two free-spirited, talented sisters whose lives come unraveled when their father dies and leaves them unexpectedly broke. Their discovery of where his money went is just the first of several betrayals that befall them as they struggle to start their own fashion business. Yes, it's about women and clothes, but The House of Eliott is much more than a chick flick. Bea and Evie's determination to make it on their own terms reflects every artist's struggle, and the fact that they are women trying to start a business in 1920s England adds another layer to that challenge. They are helped and hindered by a wide-ranging cast of characters: a freewheeling photographer, an impostor half-brother, a stuffy cousin and even stuffier aunt, temperamental bosses, and a handful of dedicated employees. Several of the supporting characters face their own struggles in subplots that are seamlessly woven into the main story. Series creator Jean Marsh introduces each of the six tapes in this boxed set, helpfully reminding the viewer where the last episode left off and also providing valuable historical background on fashion, politics, and women's rights. The characters that Marsh and the actors have jointly created are so compelling that watching the closing credits feels like bidding farewell to old friends. --Larisa Lomacky Moore ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous perod piece
Set in post World War One England, two unmarried sisters set out to save themselves from poverty after their father's death leaves them penniless. They create a fashion design house which prospers and helps the two usher in the roaring 1920s - a perfect backdrop for their absolutely gorgeous clothes. All elements of the series are delectable: from the costumes, to the set design, to the excellent casting of the two sisters - one a prim and proper conformist, and the other a free-spirited beauty. The politics of early feminism, and of class discrimination in England are also addressed quite cleverly. One of A&E's finest offerings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A glorious look at the 1920's
I love this series. It is so wonderful, with it's great storyline, beautiful costumes and set designs.

It is such an accurate document of the fashions of the time. I love the clothes from the 20's and have been trying to recreate them. This series has helped me tremendously.

I am quite sure there is a second series, which I have not seen, and would love to get the videos (if they are out).

This is must see if you are a 20's sort of person, it will surely delight and help.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fashion Business
Before I had seen this show the only experience I had of 1920s drama was "The Great Gatsby" (novel and film). "The House of Eliott" is a lot different to the former story, being set in London, not New York, and the protagonists are two beautiful sisters - Beatrice and Evangeline Eliott.

"The House of Eliott" concerns the two sisters' struggle to make a name for themselves in the face of poverty, officious, patronising relatives and social values that inevitably work in favour of men. Using their talents for dressmaking, and dealing with life and relationships at the same time, the Eliotts eventually set up a fashion house. There are clues dropped in the first episode, as we see the sisters sketching out designs in a cafe, which indicate where their future lies.

"The House of Eliott" is an entertaining drama that isn't purely about fashion. Issues like class, etiquette and the perils of fragile romance are also covered. It can also, on a superficial level, teach you how to deal with clients and run a business. Even though I know next to nothing about fashion (there was a time when I thought "chic" was pronounced "chick"), it's worth watching to see how the sisters will overcome the next obstacle Fate puts in their way. My mother's cousin is also an award-winning fashion designer, so there's a link there too.

"The House of Eliott" is currently being shown on television on Sunday evenings at 6.30. We are now up to the third series. I keep thinking of the comedy sketch done by Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, "The House of Idiot". That was a parody with French (as an overweight Evangeline) and Saunders (as a clueless Bea) combining bits and pieces from numerous episodes, as well as adding some obvious anachronisms. The central story involved a crisis over some missing buttons, while Jack Maddox was repeatedly fobbed off by Bea. French and Saunders got a shock when the real Eliott sisters (and Tilly) made a surprise appearance.

I'm not sure how realistic "The House of Eliott" is, as I'm too young to remember the 1920s, but the show still makes compulsive viewing. Acting, costumes and plot are all high quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best of English Drama
This remarkable series is almost impossible to stop watching. Our family has already watched it 3 times and can easily watch it again. Always captivating, never boring, and completely interesting, even if the subject of fashion is not your favorite. This series will hold an honored place in your collection too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but...
... why doesn't anyone seem to recognize the truth about the series? It's a soap opera! Just because it's from the BBC and has period costumes and a slightly simplistic feminist philosophy doesn't change the fact. It's glamorous and melodramatic with lots of gossip, romance, and domestic strife. Not to mention that the story progresses in weekly installments (no self-contained episodes), more than a few of which end in cliffhangers. Lots of fun but I only gave it four stars since it's a bit slow-moving and confusing at times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you want every bit of Ally? Come to the UK!!!
Ally McBeal is an American TV show so I do not understand why Americans have only been given this small bundle of episodes when over in my home country England we have ALL the seasons available with special features!

For you hardcore Ally fans I'll give you some handy advice. Save up for a multi-region dvd player or a computer that plays dvds. Go on over to amazon.co.uk and purchase the season box sets!

Good luck!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars UPSET!
I love the show Ally Mcbeal, and I am upset that there is only one season released here in the US! I ordered three seasons from the UK website only to get them in the mail and find out that they are not compatible with the systems of the U.S. so either way I am still with out any of the episodes! It cost me $32.00 to send it back to the U.K., and I'm not even sure amazon.uk will refund the cost of the sets! So I am out of over $100.00 trying to buy the series of this wonderful show. I am upset at the entire situation!

2-0 out of 5 stars What an insult!!
While I might be inclined to believe that the seris was a cult fav, it still was extremely popular. This DVD release is an insult to all the faithful followers and just a tease to those who are unfamiliar with the ironic yet hilarious humor. There is a bit of Ally in all of us. Does Fox even know how frustrating it is to know that Ally is available in just about every country but the U.S.? I had to buy season one off a jerk on ebay and it was burnt and it sucked! I did get season four from a fabulous person in another country. Expensive song rights or not, give your loyal fans what they deserve and make it good with deleted scenes and lots of special features!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ally mcbeal boxed set PLEASE

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice first effort.
"That Girl" was a groundbreaking TV program. The source of this program's appeal is of course Marlo Thomas, in the role that defined her acting career. Thomas as the perky Ann Marie, and Ted Bessell as the handsome, logical Donald Hollinger made perhaps the perfect sixties TV couple, rivaled in popularity perhaps only by Don Adams and Barbara Feldon of "Get Smart". Show-stealer Lew Parker is also outstanding as Ann's crusty dad, a restaurant owner with a machine gun style of delivering dialog, who thinks that every guy who dates his daughter is just a "bum". These episodes are, to use an overused term, "classic TV", and should not be missed by any true aficionado of 60's television. Hopefully this is the first of many releases for this wonderful program, which still seems fresh after 35 years.

This first collection of episodes is an attempt at capturing an overview of the series. While this effort is for the most part successful, it could have been arranged better. Anchor Bay should be applauded for including nine episodes of "That Girl" on this first release. Total runtime is a whopping 225 minutes. Compare that to Star Trek's standard two episodes per DVD. Instead of being arranged in chronological order, the episodes are subdivided into three thematic groups, which may not have been the best idea.

The series first aired in 1966, and ended in 1971. During that time, the characters, particularly Ann and Donald undergo significant changes in appearance and wardrobe. There is no mistaking the Ann of 1966 with the Ann of 1971. By not following chronological order, we see the characters changing appearance significantly between some episodes, disrupting continuity. Also, two consecutive episodes feature instances of Ann's employer making a pass at her. Once again, a little more thought could have gone into how the episodes were arranged. These are minor quibbles, but as a result, the overall flow of the episodes is somewhat uneven, and doesn't feel quite right. For any future releases, I suggest that the episodes be arranged closer to chronological order.

The fact that there are no bonus materials is also a major disappointment, especially as this is the first collection of episodes to be released. The printed booklet is a good start, but this series deserves much more. A series retrospective would have been nice. An interview with Ms. Thomas, the only member of the principal cast who is still with us, would have been appropriate. Anchor Bay should be aiming to build the audience for the forthcoming releases. Overall video quality is very good, although focus does suffer at times.

Despite these criticisms, "That Girl" is not to be missed. Take a trip back to a world far removed from today. The signature hairstyle, the music, the bowling ball stuck on the toe, and Ann dancing in a chicken suit, are all waiting for you. Experience the charm of "That Girl".

Can't wait for Volume 2.

4-0 out of 5 stars Which episodes?
Here is a listing of the episodes of "That Girl" included on this disc:

1. Don't Just Do Something, Stand There 2. Anatomy of a Blunder 3. Counter Proposal 4. Call of the Wild 5. Nobody Here But Us Chickens 6. The Snow Must Go On 7. This Little Piggy Had a Ball (Rob Reiner and Teri Garr have a cameo) 8. Pass the Potatoes, Ethel Merman (guest starring -- you guessed it -- Ethel Merman) 9. Those Friars (Milton Berle and Danny Thomas guest star)

As for my opinion on the disc itself, I think it's a nice, well-rounded grouping of some of That Girl's best moments. Watching this disc, I like the show even more now than I already did. It was interesting seeing how Donald met Ann Marie, and the very funny episode where Donald is supposed to meet Ann's parents for the first time, but a run of bad luck seems intent on ruining any good first impression he might make on them. The episode where Donald finally proposes to Ann is included on here as well. Another thing I found interesting was seeing how much fashions changed during the show's run.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's on the 2nd tape?
Can anyone tell me the title of the 2nd tape in the "That Girl Box Set -VHS", and which episodes tape 2 includes? I don't see any mention (or picture) of the second tape.

Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE 'THAT MARLO'
I never missed an episode when the show originally aired! Ann Marie was a role model to me at a time when few good ones were to be found; and Marlo Thomas represented all the same admirable qualities in real life. I quickly bought every episode available on VHS and, later, the only DVD that, to date, has been issued. When will we see more on DVD? Is Anchor Bay Entertainment listening? There are many of us waiting for more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Seaon DVD Boxsets Would Be Good!
I was only a year old when That Girl was first shown on TV but I do remember watching the show when I was a little girl probably about 4 or 5 years old and thinking the show was pretty funny and I think I was about 7 years old when they first started showing reruns and I remember liking how perky and spunky Marlo Thomas's character Ann was and I also liked Ted Bessell who played Donald and I remember having a crush on him. I like that they have episodes of the show on DVD and I would love to see every episode put on DVD and I think complete season boxsets like they did with Mash would be really nice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history lesson
Unless you are a Toshiro Mifune fan or a Musashi Miyamoto fan you probably won't appreciate these films. The movie is a very accurate account of the life of the greatest samurai to ever live, Musashi Miyamoto. The fight seens are few but great when they happen. It demonstrates Musashi's way of thinking and how he grew into the great man that he died as. After you see the movies read his Book of Five Rings.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUSASHI A TRUE SHUGYOSHA
Toshiro mifune portrayed Musashi very well. This is a film for everyone.Action for the guys and a love story for the gals all rolled up into one.Even the guys will be touched by Otsu's on going pursuit after Musashi, because of her love for him.If the guys say they don't; there not a man.Even though a lot of things were changed in making the movie from Eiji Yoshikawa's novel;it still keeps in spirit of it.A job well done!!Read the novel. There's a whole lot more detail and events in it that the movie leaves out.Besides the movie, the novel is also a five star book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Botched
While I think the trilogy is overall well done, there are a few things that make this a questionable buy.

First, the "darkness." I think it could've very well been prevented through editing, but the publisher neglected this. You cannot see half the movie due to overwhelming darkness. This is especially bad when it comes down to the fighting scenes, where you cannot see anything at all. It's extremely frustrating not being able to see.

Second, I will say that the story roughly follows that of the book, Musashi - by Eiji Yoshikawa. You get the overall story, but there are a ton of things that have been changed for the sake of the trilogy. I really think that the film has deviated far too much from the book which it is based. Read the book and you will surely know what I mean.

It would be best to wait for the various Japanese TV series on this story to come to the US (or seek them out from overseas) than to buy this. It's nice to see Toshiro Mifune, but it is a shame to see something that could've been done much better. I think the biggest fault lies with the publisher.

2-0 out of 5 stars darkness rules
These films are too dark and much of the action cannot be followed. Nothing is worse that a sword fight where the action can't be seen. It's strange that Criterion should release these wonderful films in this way as they usually use great prints. Quite disappointing!

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 Star Trilogy! 3 Star DVD quality
The Samurai Trilogy is excellent and a must see for anyone interested in Japanese history, culture or samurai. It's truly an epic. The only bad thing is the dvd quality. They films appear on dvd to be TOO DARK! You will have to turn the brightness up all the way on your t.v. settings. And some of the scenes look really ugly and should have been cleaned up.
The Samurai Trilogy is in dire need to be digitally remastered.
But I guess it's still worth buying. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love these gals...
I have two of the videos in this set, but, I think I can still write a review based on them.

I have Basic Dance and Mystical Dance. I enjoy both tapes, although, I find Mystic Dance easier to follow. I think it's because the movements on that tape are slower and more sensuous. The routine you learn on the Basic Dance tape is fast and sort of perky (well, as "perky" as belly dancing gets). I'm just not confident enough in my movements to go that quickly.

But, I do enjoy both tapes and the instructional methods in both of them. Neena and Veena are excellent instructors, who clearly and carefully demonstrate each movement. The sound quality is also excellent. Both music and voice-overs for instruction are bright and audible.

I'm really looking forward to being able to afford "Beyond Mystic Dance", although, I'm saving to get the whole set on DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Invigorating!
I DO NOT like exercise, I repeat I DO NOT LIKE EXERCISE!!!

But...I LOVED THIS SET!

I have become an ardent fan of bellydance in the last three months. The greatest appeal, for me, is the lack of complications to this exercise. No weights, mats, or any other special equipment is required. You can wear traditional fitness gear, or wear a dress, or wear nothing at all. It is movement and stretching that feels good all over!!!

The Bidasha twins have single-handedly (or double-handedly) changed my life. I feel very differently about my body (I'm severely overweight.) This art form makes me feel fit and beautiful and I am losing weight and building muscle tone.

I made the error of purchasing the videos seperately. Believe me you may as well purchase them all. However, my one complaint is regarding Mystic Dance which has less actual dancing and teaches more hand gestures and veil movements. Still, all of this adds to character and expression when you dance so it is still valuable.

For the most part, the pictures were very clear and audible and the movements were demonstrated in an understandable fashion. Occasionally, I thought the cameras focussed more on the dancers' upper body and faces when I really needed to see the whole body, but this was really rare.

I also reccommend Bellydance Fitness for Beginners if you feel silly purchasing a Bellydance instructional tape. These are quick and uncomplicated thirty minute workouts that give you energy and tone you up. Believe it, if you hate exercise, this is the workout for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Easy, and Amazing
Sensual Art of Bellydance is an amazing set if you want to get a decent work out and learn bellydancing. The instructor's voice is calm, not shouting, and the steps are easy to follow and that's coming from someone with two left feet.

I don't keep up with exercise very well, but I've been working out to tape one for a year now. I feel as if I have mastered it so I have just moved on to the second tape. Both tapes have been challenging and fun. Also I'm losing weight, and hey that's always a bonus :)

But the best thing of all is how you feel during and after. The elegance that is associated with bellydance can lift anyone's self image... and this is coming from someone with a very large "image" ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to start learning bellydance this is for you!
I bought this set from my book club and it is great. I have all of the bellytwins workout videos. But if you are wanting something learn from but not necessarily a workout then get these. The twins take you step by step through three different types of dances. At the end of each video they take you through the routing three times, each time being a little faster. Also a wonderful collection for those of us who already bellydance, to add new moves to our routines. The twins give us a new and refreshing change of pace in bellydance instruction!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional dance instruction videos
Once again Neena and Veena outdo themselves and give us this amazing set of videos. Their instruction is easy to follow and not only teaches basic isolations but incorporate them into routines that you can actually learn and do on your own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Victory at Sea" -- A Victory to See
Probably the most extraordinary documentary of World War II ever produced for television, the original 26 episodes of "Victory at Sea" have been collated into six VHS tapes. To own the original 26 volumes on individual tapes is a collector's treasure indeed. Virtually impossible to find in that format and, if you can find it, good luck on the price!

Starting with "Prelude to War," each episode of the series focuses on a distinct naval engagement or campaign in the Second World War. Captured enemy film from various Axis sources enhances the vast collection of U.S. Navy and other Allied and private sources used to compile each episode. The narration by Leonard Graves is superb and the writing for the narration is equally prominent. Narration is always just right and never excessive allowing the viewer to relish the award-winning musical score with its familiar and sometimes haunting refrains. Three long-playing recordings of the original soundtrack and variations thereof from the series were released in the heyday of "high fidelity" recordings. Soundtrack CDs are currently available for those who enjoy the music as much as the video images.

All footage is in black and white and there are some technical "deficiencies" for the purists among the viewing audience. However, considering the series made its television debut in 1952, the historical accuracy, content and balanced perspective are truly remarkable. In the episode centered around the climactic naval and island battle for Okinawa, Leonard Graves describes the kamikaze threat to the U.S. fleet off the island as a "duel between gunners who fight to live and pilots who fight to die." There is no judgment of kamikaze fanaticism a mere seven years after the end of the war. Episode after episode, it is a factual account of what occurred on the vast oceans and seas of the world without political inclination of any sort.

"Victory at Sea" is a true classic documentary of American television with the bonus of one of the most enduring soundtracks of any film presentation of any kind. It is a mandatory addition to the video library of anyone interested in World War II -- especially all aspects of the war at sea. Selections from the series should be used to educate the youth of the nation in the secondary schools to convey the scale and sacrifice of so many six decades ago.

3-0 out of 5 stars Concentrated ``Victory at Sea'' reveals some flaws
The extravagant praise reaped by ``Victory at Sea'' in the early '50s turns out to have been overdone. But in 1952, it was not possible to watch all 26 episodes together. Now we can, and we see that the same film clips are used over and over -- obviously some of them misrepresenting themselves. Without source documentation, I cannot demonstrate it, but it appears some clips shown as from the early years were actually shot as late as 1945. Furthermore, the series glosses over Allied reverses. The ``Guadalcanal'' section is particularly bad in this respect. The explanation for the Marines' lack of equipment in the early days is simply dishonest. The Battle of Savo Island -- surely a pivotal event in the naval war -- is mentioned, quickly, in a list of other battles; but nothing is said of its significance. Great propaganda. Lousy history. Wonderful Richard Rogers score.

5-0 out of 5 stars Older VHS vs new DVD
Buyer beware! The newer DVD set of this FABULOUS series is not up to the quality of this VHS edition. The DVDs are made by the History channel, and the sound quality is awful. This older VHS version, produced by New Line features (although on tape) has a much finer sound quality and even the video isn't that bad, compared to the lousey transfer of the DVDs.
These are still the finest chronicles of war footage AND narration that have been made of WWll, in my opinion. Try to get thru them without tearing up at the human sacrifice and bravery.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Old Fashioned
Once considered one of the greatest TV documentaries ever made, no one under the age of fifty is going to be able to sit through this overblown, hoaky collection of war footage. The narration is so overdramatic it's almost laughable, like the propaganda films made during the war to increase morale. Roger's score is great music, but it's just too prominant and often completely inappropriate (like the cheerfull flute music as Hitler marches into Paris).

Skip this dinosaur and go directly to World at War, the great BBC series from the 1970s.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want to buy the DVD for this set too!
Ditto that from viewer in New Orleans. I have seen this series on TV years ago and I am hoping it will be on DVD soon. ... Read more

According to one Avengers-appreciation Web site, three of the seven episodes contained in this three-volume boxed set--"Too Many Christmas Trees," "A Surfeit of H20," and "Dial a Deadly Number"--rank among the 10 best episodes from the series' Mrs. Emma Peel era (a fourth, "The Hour That Never Was," is ranked in the top 20), making this the perfect chaser to The Avengers '65 Set 1. "What nasty situation have you got in store for me this time?" Mrs. Peel asks in "The Man-Eater of Surrey Green," another of the vintage, black-and-white episodes from the series' breakthrough fourth season, which introduced Diana Rigg in her signature role. The answers make for diabolically clever entertainment in classic Avengers tradition: a "herbicial" plant from outer space (in "The Man-Eater"), matrimonial matchmaker assassins (in "The Murder Market"), a rainmaking vintner (in "H20"), and a brainwashing dentist (in "The Hour"). "Christmas Trees" alone is worth the price of the boxed set. In this haunting episode for all seasons, Steed is plagued by deadly nightmares that have begun to come true. Outfitted at one point as Oliver Twist, Mrs. Peel proves herself to be the woman of our dreams. Each volume is also available separately. --Donald Liebenson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Steed Pours Champagne - Emma Sparkles
The best thing about The Avengers is that the series is so diverse, a random grab of any half dozen episodes is sure to bring up at least three you're guaranteed to enjoy. With seven available in this set, the odds increase that you'll pull up four.

For those who miss the earlier Honor Blackman crime melodramas in the series, "The Murder Market," "Two's A Crowd" and "Dial A Deadly Number" will fit their bill. "A Surfeit of H2O," "The Hour That Never Was" and "The Man-Eater of Surrey Green" provide a bit of sci-fi and action/adventure, and "Too Many Christmas Trees" - a favorite in anyone's book - is a wonderful psychological suspenser in the espionage/murder vein.

But better than all of that is simply the magnificent chemistry between stars Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg, which livens-up even the weakest episodes in the series with wit, humor and a great abundance of charm. Rarely has any show been so graced with two such appealing actors, let alone writers sparkling enough to make adept use of their native talents. There is a depth of feeling, commitment and moral fortitude, in the characters of John Steed and Emma Peel, that is rarely seen anymore, and is sorely missed.

Enter the world of The Avengers - or reacquaint yourself, if you're already a fan - and immerse yourself in excellence.

4-0 out of 5 stars A mix of classics and weaker episodes
This collection is a real mixed bag, with classic episodes (including the sharply written, seamless thriller DIAL A DEADLY NUMBER and the enjoyably surreal TOO MANY CHRISTMAS TREES) balanced against definitely weaker episodes (THE HOUR THAT NEVER WAS, MAN-EATER OF SURRY GREEN).

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete at last
At last all the Diana Rigg episodes are available on video tapes (or DVD if you have the hardware). Here you can view at your leisure exactly what tv is missing today: the exquisitely correct balance of high adventure with tongue-in-cheek plots, dialogue, and world-outlook. The assumption is that the viewers are fairly well educated and can appreciate such references as "Your handbag, Lady Bracknell" in "The Girl from Auntie" episode. This is to a large extent Wildean satire anyway, with a dash of W.S. Gilbert: assume that an absurd situation is normal and follow its logical trail to wherever it leads. On the whole, the black and white episodes are a touch more innocent than the more studio-bound amd self conscious color ones. And it is fun spotting future big stars and lesser ones, none of whom were permitted to appear more than once in the same series. And for a trivia question, what character other than "Brodney" the bumbling Soviet agent appeared in a black and white and then a color episode? Not the same actor, mind you: the same character. Now the question is, Will the Tara King episodes follow? My contact at A&E says no one is sure at this time. But thanks and thanks again for these sets.

5-0 out of 5 stars JJDBauer@earthlink.net
Great set! Most of the b/w Avengers episodes are better than the color ones. "Murder Market" and "Too Many Christmas Trees" definitely are top of the mark! "Dial A Deadly Number" has that wonderful twist of plot. Definitely worth the purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hornblower Lives! Three cheers for A&E!
A&E continues to treat fans of the Horatio Hornblower book series with two new movies. These movies are at least of equal quality, if not better, than the six previous films. Everything from the ships to the costumes to the sets hit all the notes and make you feel a part of the period.

Likewise the stories and acting are fabulous. Horatio is given command of the Hotspur and is forced to deal with a new crew (with some old faces), the French, spies, and rebel Irishmen. Coming through with flying colors, Hornblower tackles the unthinnkable - marriage. This second film, Duty, is the best of the series. The central theme of 'duty' is so thoroughly woven into the fabric of the story that almost all of the relationships in the narrative are faced with the question of duty.

Ioan Gruffud continues to give a truly inspiring performance as Captain Hornblower. He continues to let the character grow and mature, while at the same time maintaining the core identity of Hornblower - an honorable, intelligent, courageous soldier who is wholeheartedly devoted to Britain and her navy. The relationship between Hornblower and Admiral Pellew continues to become more of a father-son relationship. Paul McGann (of Doctor Who fame, among many other things) returns as Lt. Bush. McGann gives a strong performance as Hornblower's second in command, showing that that he is more than capable of both being a leading man and an excellent supporting character.

Something that many may find as a negative is the lack of totally new music. Much of the score seems to be a reworking of the major musical themes found in the first four films of the series. Personally, I find this a 'plus.' It helps establish a certain continuity to the series that is nice. I always find myself grinning when the "Horatio has done it again" theme begins playing across the cheers or astonished looks of the other characters!

For those of you who have seen the Gregory Peck film, Horatio Hornblower, the A&E series is just about to catch up (chronologicall) to the events portayed in that film. Let's hope that A&E continues producing the films until the complete life & times of Horatio Hornblower are done with such excellent acting and production values!

Hip-hip Horay! Hip-hip HORAY! HIP-HIP! HORAY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Those of you who giggle at the word ¿frigate¿...
Will nevertheless enjoy the latest two entries in this neat little series of movies. Fifth Officer Lowe from Titanic has received a promotion to Captain Horatio Hornblower in this rousing seafaring adventure. Ioan Gruffudd, a charmer in the tall, dark, and handsome mold, plays C.S. Forrester's idealistic early 19th century British naval hero in two movies, "Duty" and "Loyalty." Hornblower is passionate about the sea and his duty to King and country, but less so about the woman he marries, Maria Mason. Forrester's hero is a man so ethical that he marries beneath him not out of love, but duty (hence the first title). He cannot bear Maria's complete adoration of him to go unnoticed, and for her to realize his own lack of feeling for her, so he marries her and lives a charade. Alack and alas, this pairing is bound to be ill-advised.

Those who dig rip-roaring stories of the sea will enjoy this one. The writing and direction are excellent. There is enough historical information to please purists. There are swordfights, spies, war, cannons, Napoleon, and enough things blowing up to please action fans. Still, the series is suitable for older children, as the violence is rather tame and the lack of sparks between "Horrie" and the dumpy Maria translates into prim kisses but little else. The relationship between Hornblower and his superior, Admiral Pellew, is distinctly father and son, and between Hornblower and his second-in-command, Lieutenant Bush, distinctly brotherly. Shades of gray do not appear in Forrester's stories as A&E has brought them to the screen; characters are mostly polarized as good or bad. The turncoats aboard Hornblower's ship are entirely devious, the loyal ones entirely good.

The somewhat priggish Hornblower is idolized near-completely by his crew, especially when he throws himself on a bomb thrown on board the Hotspur and claps it out with his hand-knitted gloves (two guesses who lovingly knit them). Then he orders it thrown overboard. Why not just throw it overboard to begin with? Then he is too modest to mention it in his report to the Admiral. When Maria reads of his bravery later, she starts blubbering, as per usual. I love Julia Sawalha, and she does her job well here, as Maria is too googly for words.

The effects aren't half bad, but the same picture of the harbor standing in for Portsmouth every time got a bit tiresome. Comic moments abound, my favorite being with the hapless Styles, who gets into trouble at every turn. "Who's first down the privy, then? Styles?" Barbara Flynn as Maria's conniving mother and Hornblower's landlady, seems to have trotted directly out of a William Hogarth illustration, albeit she's about fifty years out of date. Also brilliant is Greg Wise as Major Cotard, the Frenchman "frog dandy" who Hornblower suspects may not be on the side of the British after all. He is almost, but not quite, as dashing as Mr. Gruffudd, who appears to have a nifty little franchise going here in the upright Hornblower. Let's hope he gets a spirited woman companion to loosen him up a little in later episodes.

All in all, most will enjoy the story, acting, and production values. It appears to remain true to the novels. Rent it or buy it, you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best yet!
Of all the hornblower movies, the two newest are my favorite. All the old charecters are still there- Bush, Matthews, Pellew, Stiles- and better than before, with some interesting new charecters. Keeps you gessing who the enemy is. A new twist to an old tale, you're sure to love these!
