What I must say, however, is that I highly reccommend buying the Kid Buu Saga too because the end is quite a cliffhanger and really is a good place to start watching the Kid Buu Saga from. Anyway, I say that you should buy this, but the choice is really yours. ... Read more | |

My thoughts: It's.... ok. Very much like a role-playing game. The opening song and opening sequence is excellent, if only the rest of the show was as good. Spike has cool hair, and I like elves. Neese looks one way at first, then all of a sudden is drawn a different way. I've seen the first 7 (of 9) tapes, but the show hasn't given me much interest to watch the other two. The dub is bad, and I like dubbed anime. The redeeming quality? The "Welcome to Lodoss Island" SD shorts between the episodes are wonderful, very funny and well done. I wish you could buy just that part.

Utena is the most amazing shoujo (girl's) anime I have ever seen, if not THE most amazing anime I have ever seen. It's tough to rival this incredibly creative series. Often criticized for being to 'weird' I praise Utena for it's bold moves in the world of shoujo! An interesting and *completly* unique plotline... this is like nothing you have ever seen before. Pushing the limits on sexual barriers, and always keeping you guessing and surprised, the craziness of Utena can capture any heart. Mature viewer's will enjoy the depth that the creators went into on every episode, including new battle themes with amazing lyrics that pertain to each character. New songs every episode, and all of the music is enough to make your heart sing. An excellent opening and closing theme, and new battle themes each episode you can NEVER get bored listening to Utena. The main plotline is a young girl named Utena who goes to the Ohtori Academy. She was visited by a Prince when she was a very young girl and he gave her a rose signet ring. Ever since then she has dreamed of becoming a prince herself, and she dreams of being able to save young princess' from danger. When she gets into a duel with Saiyonji over the welfare of a friend she discovers a whole new world where she can finally become the prince she alwasy dreamed of. A battle arena with an upside down castle, and a rose bride who can summon the power of Dios into a sword. Whoever wins the duel becomes engaged to the Rose Bride, who turns out to be a fellow student named Anthy. When Utena wins the duel she most adopt Anthy as her bride. Although at first Utena is skeptical of the shy and akward girl, they soon develop a strong bond that cannot be broken. Pairing up against beautiful bishonen Saiyonji who seems to be rough and coarse, Touga the head of Student Council who is quite the ladies man, Juri who scares even the teacher's, Nanami who is in love with her big brother Touga, Miki who only has eyes for Anthy after she plays his paino song plus numerous other characters like Wakaba and the cute Chuchu you can tell that Anthy and Utena are going to be having the time of their lives. The DVD set includes the first 7 episodes, most notably 'Take Care, Miss Nanami' where the cute young Tsuwabuki is introduced to the scene. I recomend watching in subtitled version, as the dubbed version isn't very pleasant on the ears.
Utena, superficially, is the story of a determined young girl who goes through many trials for the sake of her friend, the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya. Underneath all that it is a heavily symbolic story about the balance between masculinity and femininity and humanity's struggle against its own flaws. Utena is directed by Ikuhara, who also did Sailor Moon - but be warned, Utena is nothing like Sailor Moon. While the anime is still lighter than the original manga, it deals with controversial subjects such as incest, rape, and lesbianism. Young children can watch Utena without fear, as it contains no nudity or violence whatsoever, but a ten-year-old simply won't get the complexity of plot in Utena, which was written for teenagers. Ikuhara's handling of Utena is superb: the music, the animation and the voices are great - but the English pronounciations are still awful (Utena TenjOH, people, not Tenjoo). Utena is a geart watch even for guys; you can't call yourself an otaku if you don't see it!

You want humour? This series has it in bundles. From Lina, a somewhat-girlish(Pink clothes), somewhat tomboyish(Come on! She kicks butt!) 15-year-old sorceress, to Gourry, the less-than-intelligent swordsman, you will find much to laugh at. However, when Slayers gets serious, it gets serious. The last episode of the 1st story arc(In Tape 3), had me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen. Slayers is a must for any anime-fan or fantasy-lover. You become immersed in the unreal world they live in. The characters are engaging and fun to watch. I have some disputes with the dubbed actor for Zelgadis in this set. Ditto with the voice actress for Amelia(Who makes the poor girl thoroughly unlikable). Despite this, I still enjoyed this set of Slayers.
The animation in this show is alright; I've seen better in such animes as Fushigi Yugi or Cowboy Bebop. My main complaint, though, is that in the earlier stages of the show it seems to be just one battle after another, and they all seem begin and end the same way with a buch of beasts surrounding he heros, and the heros beating them again and again and again. Overall, the show is enjoyable and funny anime that all ages will find amusing.

The series has 52 episodes, and the red Suzaku Box Set contains the first half (26 episodes). The multi-fold box set case is very beautiful and the finest I've seen to date. I would expect that the second half will be presented in a similar blue Seiryu Box Set. The DVD version is bilingual with optional subtitles and can satisfy all audiences that may prefer original Japanese dialogue with/without subtitles, or dubbed English. Dubbed English and subtitle translations are never perfect, but I believe they've done a very good job here. In conclusion, I highly recommend getting the Fushigi Yugi series in DVD format starting with this Suzaku box set, and hope the waiting goes well for the next DVD box set.
Fushigi Yuugi is, at first glance, a typical shoujo anime. Two high school exam candidates, Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo, are in the library reseaching, when they come across a book titled 'Universe of the Four Gods.' No sooner do they pick it up, then they are drawn into this book, and straight into ancient China! Miaka and Yui become separated, and Miaka finds herself in the Konan Empire, being hailed as the Priestess of the phoenix god Suzaku. She has to find the Seven Seishi (warriors) bearing the "mark of Suzaku" (think of it as a tattoo that shows up when they're fighting), and summon the god to have all her wishes fulfilled. She finds her seven warriors: Tamahome, her money-obsessed love interest devoted to his family. Hotohori, the narcissistic Emperor of Konan, also in love with Miaka (of course...) Nuriko, my personal favorite, a sassy crossdresser in love with Hotohori (and a guy, in case you're wondering). Chichiri, the chipper sorcerer in training. Tasuki, the brash, energetic mountain bandit. Mitsukake, the stoic healer. And Chiriko, the 13-year-old genius. After enlisting the help of the sorceress Taiitsikun, she begins. But she soon finds out that Yui has been chosen by the Kotou Empire to summon rival god, Seiryu. Life in the book has not been easy for Yui, and after finding out that Miaka is in a relationship with Tamahome, whom she loves, she begins to jealously resent Miaka, and works against her with the cruel Nakago to summon her own god first. Yes, I like this anime a lot. Although the romance can be tough to take at times ("MIAAAKKKAAAAA!" "TAMAHOMEEEEEEE!") and I like neither Miaka NOR Tamahome very much, it's not a big deal, there are other aspects that I love. Like, for example, the wonderful Nuriko. He is my favorite character, and one of the most entertaining to watch, in my humble opinion. Most of the secondary characters have a little something to love, particularly Chichiri and Tasuki, who not only provide great comic relief, but who's partnership in the later episodes seems so genuine that it might as well be real life. The dynamics between the seishi is really what makes the show; not all the business about Suzaku and gods. There wasn't anything really special between the Seiryu seven, so their scenes were not nearly as interesting to watch. The animation is nothing special. It gets a little sloppy at times, and sometimes the characters' motions are a bit jerky. There are some lovely colors used, however. I know that sounds incredibly lame, but Suzaku's vibrant reds and golds just make it come to life for you. However, Yu Watase, who did the original manga story and artwork, had much more vivid character designs, and compared to hers, they look a bit squashed. The music could be very nice at times (the opening comes to mind, with it's Ancient China meets peppy J-Pop approach) but some of the other music was a bit over the top (Miaka and Tamahome's theme was quite overplayed... I got pretty sick of it). The voice acting I had no problem with, generally. Nuriko redefined the "bishounen with a girly voice" stereotype, Chichiri was the same genius behind Escaflowne's Van and Fruits Basket's Kyo, Hotohori's made every fan girl's dream come true, and Miaka's was just plain annoying. Fushigi Yuugi, despite it's failings, is a favorite of mine. This isn't necessarily because of a thrills-a-minute plot, or a fantastic, deep meaning, or splendid animation. I love it because it creates characters you can fall in love with, and get extremely attached to, which, as this anime proves, can be hazardous. Keep a box of tissues handy. You'll need it. Trust me, I did!
While lead character Miaka may grate on many people's nerves, and love interest/lead "bishounen" Tamahome lacks something no main character should be without (namely, a personality), the supporting cast more than makes up for this. The series gets off to a pretty quick start, with Miaka and her best friend Yui discovering The Universe of the Four Gods and being taken inside (Yui is almost instantly sent back to the real world). Miaka is made the Priestess of Suzaku and she must find the seven celestial warriors that will protect her. Once this is accomplished, the empire of Konan will be saved and Miaka can have any wish she wants. Once all the background is established, the story slows down for a bit, but it soon becomes apparent that all is easier said than done. The first half ends on a real cliffhanger that will leave anyone who sticks with it more than enough reason to watch the last half. As I said before, the supporting cast is wonderful. There's crossdressing Nuriko, who's cool beyond cool and a personal favorite, masked monk Chichiri, emperor Hotohori, and many more. There are so many supporting characters with such distinct personalities that at least one of them should appeal to anyone--but don't think they'll be too confusing to keep track of; it's simple enough, really. The one who'll really win your sympathies, though, is Yui--if you can find it in your heart to look past her deeds to her real motivation, that is. Overall, though the main couple is quite possibly the worst couple in the history of anime, Fushigi Yugi manages to be engrossing and entertaining. You'll laugh, you'll cry (especially later on), and hopefully you'll want to see it through to the very end.

Amazon.com Developed for British television as an animated, six-episode miniseries, Wyrd Sisters marks the first attempt at transferring the franchise to video. As presented here on three tapes, with a running time of approximately 147 minutes, Pratchett's cracked re-imagining of familiar mythological themes retains its verbal wit and realizes colorfully stylized visual terrain, although modest animation techniques relegate its impact to the realm of older TV cartoons. Sci-fi aficionados spoiled by lavish computer graphics and the current big-screen state of the art will wonder what all the fuss is about. Pratchett's fans, however, won't mind. An intricate plot, set in motion by the murder of King Verence by the utterly dimwitted Duke Felmet, encompasses a smuggled baby, an itinerant theatrical troupe, a kiss lasting 18 years, time travel, and other pokerfaced twists of fate, cohering around the three title heroines, a coven of rather dotty witches.A droll, sociable Death (voiced by Christopher Lee) epitomizes the breezy comic spirit that fuels Pratchett's stories. --Sam Sutherland Reviews (48)
But I was delighted with these videos. They are probably the best adaptation of a novel I have ever seen. The movie was well animated, I think, probably because it was not made in the USA! But animation aside, the story itself was a brilliant adaptation of the book, and a lot the humor is very subtle and you can miss it if you aren't careful. And I loved the British accents, because I tend to not think of the books that way when I am reading them. This video had me laughing so hard at points my stomach hurt, and I will be watching again and again to catch what I missed from laughing, if I can contain myself that is. So in summary all I can say is get it if you like the Discworld novels, get this video because you won't be disappointed!
Whenever a beloved book is adapted to a screen, be it large or small, there is the risk of the director or the screenwriter botching the job (_The Postman_ comes to mind). Happily Keven Costner had nothing to do with this production. The animation is of high quality, the voices were well cast (Christopher Lee does a splendid job as YOU KNOW WHO) and the story kept me and my children (ages 6 and 9) involved and amused. Sure there are some plot elements that were shortened up, but I guess they didn't want an epic (speaking of Kevin Costner). And why in the name of Nipper did they put 1:48 of vid on 3 tapes? I recommend the DVD version just to save the shelf space! Overall: A fine entertainment, not just for Pratchett fans.
