5-0 out of 5 stars Great Anime
Only one word... GREAT! If you enjoy Japanese cartoons this is a must have, no matter how old you are. If you like adventure, you got it. If you like comedy, you got it. If you like mythology, you got it. If you like sheer non-stopping fun, you definitely got it. This series charm resides best in the fact that the characters' personal lives don't remain stagnated as it happens in most cartoons, and best of all, people grow old. It's not like regular cartoon shows where the characters remain at the same age forever. People are born and grow older just as in real life, which in my opinion is a good thing for children to watch, so they can lean that life is constantly changing. The structure of the action, where a problem appears and they have to strive to fix it is also educational for it teaches children that no matter how wrong things may get, if they work hard enough they can make it right. And since it's an ongoing saga, the Box-set format is ideal for newcomers because you can watch an entire story-line at once. I truly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars the beginning begins
this was a good box set, exept for a couple of minor "flaws", like having it edited, pioneer should of made at least an uncut version also, even for the namek box set, but i think funimation will make an uncut version when there done with the rest of the sagas. Another flaw is throwing out scenes that shoudn't of been thrown out like the first episode, they removed gohanhe running from a tiger and goku finds him hanging on a tree next to a water fall. Another scene they threw out was when gohan was training under piccolo and gohan falls in a cave and tries to escape. During that time he meets a robot who helps him. they shouldn't of thrown out those scenes, but you cane see them in japenese with english subtititles in the movie dead zone. There is one more deleted scene that can't be viewed in the american version. Launch is in a bar drinking and cries because she saw tien die by nappa and pays the barkeep a bunch of money cause she's too drunk. other than these flaws they have good fights, first apperances of gohan, nappa, vegeta, the sayain race, radditz, gregory, bubbles, and king kai. i reccomened buying this set if your a collecter

3-0 out of 5 stars A good saga turned bad
The saiyan saga is one of my favirot sagas and for good reason. Unfourtinaly this part of the series was translated before the golden age of uncut dbz. All things that make dbz great have been ethier edited or totaly destroyed for no reason. let me ask you a question . Why do people watch dbz? Some watch it for it's original story , others for it's uniqe characters, but personaly I watch it for it's incredible 100 mile an hour, intence hard hitting, action packed, fights. Yes, that is why we watch dragonball z , but funimation totaly blew it in this case . For exaple , when a person gets punched in the english version they erase the scene where the fist conected and just show two seconds of flashing light. Im sorry but this certanly does not satisfy me . On another note the incredible diologe and music that the japanese version was known for was replaced with some ... noises that sound like they were recorded in sombody's basment. Even if you can look past the rediculice eddits and poor quality you still will not be satisfied with whats left. The only action is in the first tape and in the last three. The other four tapes are just filled with such nonsence as goku chasing bubbles and Gohan saving a pake of orphans in the wilderness. If I were you I would just buy the first and last 3 tapes and save a couple bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU'VE GOT TO SEE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish that I could rate the box set 900,000,000,000,000,000,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gohan gets saiyan napped by Radits. Goku teams up with Piccolo to save him. They save Gohan but Goku dies. Piccolo takes the young saiyan (Gohan) to a desert wasteland for special training while Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Yajirobe train for the saiyans stronger than Radits!

Goku travels the long rode of Snake Way in search of the martial arts master King Kai. After one year th saiyans finaly arrive. It seems that the saiyans are unstopable. Tien, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu are gone. Piccolo saves Gohan, but this sends him to another dimention as well. When all seems lost for Gohan and Krillin Goku comes back from King Kai's planet. With the Kao Kin power in store Goku takes out Nappa and hurts Vegeta. Goku body is thrashed as well so it is up to Gohan to fight the saiyan until Krillin can throw the Spirit Bomb (given to him by Goku) at Vegeta. The spirit bomb is thrown at Vegeta... but find out the rest through the movie it self!

3-0 out of 5 stars Be warned! These are the edited dubbed episodes!
INTRODUCTION:
Dragon Ball Z was the follow-up to Akira Toriyama's surprisingly successful Dragon Ball series. Although his first installment of the classic series was more of an adventure-comedy type series, the Z series pretty much focused entirely on sci-fi martial arts action - which makes the Z series far superior to its superior. The series has become popular all around the world, and it's no surprise that a box set of the first season was released here in the States. Read on for my review of the Saiyan Conflict box set.

BASIC PLOT:
The story for the Saiyan Saga, the first of four major sagas that make up Dragon Ball Z, goes something like this. Five years have passed since the classic Dragon Ball series ended. Goku is now married to Chi Chi and the couple has a son, Gohan (named for the old man that took care of Goku as a child, rather obviously.) Unfortunately Raditz, an alien, comes to earth, telling Goku that he is his brother, and that he was sent here to destroy the planet. Goku joins forces with his arch-nemesis Piccolo to defeat this menace, but Goku is forced to sacrifice his life for the cause. With his dying breath, Raditz announces that two other members of his race are on their way to earth to collect the Dragon Balls and wish for immortality, and that they are far stronger than he is. For the next year, the Z warriors train, and many of the non-warrior types go off to find the Dragon Balls so that Goku can be revived. But will all this training be enough to defeat the Saiyan elites?

EPISODE/DVD OPINIONS:
When you do anime DVDs, it's an unwritten rule that the DVDs include both an uncut English dub version and an uncut Japanese version with English subtitles. AND ALL THESE DVDS HAVE IS THE EDITED DUB! I admit, the voice actors FUNimation hired for the dub version all do the voices of their respective characters well (all except for Vegeta's), but the dialogue is too inaccurate and Americanized. Also, a good deal of footage was cut (nearly HALF of the first episode was cut out.) And needless to say, the violence was reduced so that the series could be aired on American television stations. This is NOT the Dragon Ball Z real fans want.

OVERALL:
My advice is NOT to purchase this set. I recently heard that Pioneer will lose their rights to the older episodes of the series soon, and when they do, FUNimation will redub the episodes, and hopefully rerelease them on DVD with the original Japanese version intact. So hold off and see if that happens. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much exciting action...but then again...so sad.
This may be by far one of the best sagas ever, trunks is kool, he defeated freiza, the trunk saga is a very sad one as well, the death of gohan in trunk's world affected him so deeply, and the other ones, where kool, but then again said and unfortanate, although I still reccomend any dbz(dragon ball z) fan SHOULD buy it.Because it is truly worth it!I reccomend it!:)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting my series
Okay let me start off by saying my bro got me into this series.I've seen the series off and on on cable and then saw some "uncut" versions.I gotta say the uncut was definately better. One of the tapes is the 'history of Trunks' it is a mini-movie of how life is on Earth during his timeline the only surviving sayian, besides himself ,is Gohan (his master/best friend). Together they try to defeat a pair of androids that are running around destroying things and in this version ,shows how Trunks turns Super-Sayian for the first time.(Gohan dies by the way).Which ultimately led up to him time-traveling to change things.I strongly suggest you watch this first, it gives more "oh so that's why!" to the rest of the tapes.
Mysterious Youth-The next two episodes are leading up to Frieza's arrival on Earth and Trunks introduction to the 'past'.Vegita comes back unable to find Gohan in space, Gohan is burdend with a tutor, Frieza and his dad arrive on earth. The other z fighters go to intercept but Trunks arrives first and finishes both Frieza and his dad before the others can turning Super-Sayian and in the process driving Vegita mad, since he himself has been unable to do so.
Prelude to Terror-This is my favorite, Goku comes back and asks who defeated Freiza and so meets Trunks.Trunks asks Goku to talk in private revealing who he is, and the timeline in which he lives.Goku seems to find Trunks origins more interesting then the prophecy given to him, and his reactions had me laughing right along with him :).Along with the prophecy Trunks give Goku an antidote to a virus he'll catch 2 years from then.
Z Warriors Prepare-Gohan,Goku,and Piccolo go off to train,Vegeta pushes himself to the edge (indirectly stirring Bulma's maternal instincts and planting the seeds for their involvment). Yamcha finally gets it together and also goes off to train.
Goku's ordeal- okay this episode seems to be all comic relief. Goku is forced to learn how to drive and Piccolo is dragged along for the ride! The antics these two go through is just too funny to put into words.I had to watch this several times,it put a big :) on my face.

5-0 out of 5 stars I guess I need to write more reveiws...
so I'm gonna start. Firstly, I can't tell from what info is given EXACTLY what this is, but I'm guessing it's the Trunks Saga and the History of Trunks movie if it's 4 tapes. I've seen the movie, and all the Trunks Saga episodes, so I can say, they are GOOD! The movie is supurb, with an exillant sound track. The episodes are great too (the between-saga sagas are always good^^). I hope I'm guessing right, but even if I'm wrong, If it's got Trunks in it, it has to be good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best animated Science-Fiction series gets better.
There was hardly a boy that did not watch Star Blazers in the early 1980s. It was almost like the Spiderman series of the 90s or the X-MEN series of today. Though the graphics are not as good as todays, it was definately the predecessor of the excellent anime of today. I feel it has much better characters, ethics, morality and overall story line than anything since on a global scale. It is a much more realistic and believable show(except for the very end where Treliana takes-out Prince Zordan's ship). I was a really big fan. I even had a few of the cards and comic books they made based on the show. My brother and I would rush home to do our homework as fast as possible in order to watch the 3:00PM show. We were so jealous when a friend of ours actually owned the dye-cast metal model of the Argo. We were both searching and trying to get a hold of the series for years. I almost got them in the early 90s while at a comics convention at the Expo Center. No go. Finally I started to search for the Star Blazers online. Enter Amazon.com. There are other sites where you can order the Star Blazers but Amazon.com was quite a bit cheapier than the others I found. Once again, The Star Balzers are off to protect the world they love and cherish but not before having to break a few rules. After receiving a mysterious message from Treliana of Telezart, Deputy Commander Derek Wildstar and do-it-all genius Sandor are convinced that the approaching comet is much more than what it seems. The Earth Defense Leaders do not agree with Wildstar or Sandor. So they send word to all the ex-Star Force members to join them on a voluntary basis aboard the Argo for another long and dangerous mission. Everyone shows up, including the great yet reluctant pilot, Mark Venture. First they have to commondere (steal) the Argo by blasting it out of its underwater dock and then they fire the main guns to blow-up and get by one the satellites that make-up part of the Earth Defense. If that's not enough, they are being chased by the new bigger and better star-class ship, the Andromeda with orders to stop the Star Force at all costs. In true Star Blazer fashion the Andromeda, despite exceptional evasive manuvering by the Argo, catches-up to the Argo for a showdown. Once in firing range the Andromeda's Captain Gideon lets the Star Force go and wishes them luck on their mission. This is were the defeated Gamilons interplay. The Gamilons have hooked-up with the Comit Empire after their leader, Deslok, was rescued while floating in space by the Empire and restored to health. Deslok makes a pact with the leader of the Comit Empire, Prince Zordan, that he will destroy the Star Force for the Empire. The Star Blazers do not know it but they are headed for a trap set by the Gamilons, who await their little visit to Treliana's home planet of Telezart. While coming up on the planet Barracus, after defeating several space carriers, the Star Force picks-up the Space Marines who are very rough and tough group who literally run and attack space tanks. The Comet Empire continually underestimates the Star Force. The Argo goes on to defeat fleet after fleets of the Comet Empire and Gamilon Forces and beat their traps while on the way to Telezart. The Space Marines check the planet for any signs of the enemy. The surface of the planet is made-up of seens of a once thriving civilization completly destroyed. They get attacked by Comet Empire space tanks, which with the help of Wildstar and the Black tigers are quickly taken out. Once down on Telezart Derek Wildstar, Mark Venture, Sandor and the medical technition Nova finally meet Treliana. She tells the Star Force that the Comet is really the Comet Empire, a huge ship made to look like a massive comet that conquers other planets who submit to them and destroy those who do not. The comet is headed for Treliana's planet next and there is nothing she can do. It turns out that Treliana has incredible psyic powers and that the destrution to her planet was caused by her powers, which she refuses to ever use again because of what happened to her planet. Once they leave Treliana the Comet destroys her planet but not without sustaining considerable damage making the Comet Empire slow down and alter course for the first time ever. She did this after Mark Convinced her to. The final battle with Deslok takes place, probably the creshendo of the Comit Empire series. The Argo is so badly damaged that it can not use its wavemotion gun or most of its main guns. Just as Deslok was about to fire upon the Argo with his mighty Deslok gun, Sandor tells Wildstar to go to warp. Though slightly hesitant, Mark warps the Argo right into the hull of Deslok's flagship. To arms! Wildstar orders to board Deslok's ship. In order to protect Nova during the firefight, Mark gets shot and floats off the ship and into space. The Andromeda and the rest of the Earth's defense forces are completly wiped-out. Captain Gideon sends one last message to Wildstar, "attack the Comet Empire from below". With the help of Deslok the Star Force attacks the Comet Empire from below and entered the fighter ship hanger and blow-up the Comet Empire ship from within via a fantastic firefight by The Space Marines, Wildstar and Sandor. Even though the Comet Empire ship blows up another ship emerges from the smoke, destroying the Argo's guns and firing on the Earth. Treliana Brings Mark's body onto the abandoned Argo with Derek and Nova who were about to ram the Comet Empire. Treliana ends the conflict by using her powers to destroy Prince Zordans ship. I left so much out. You have to watch this series again! Or for the first time. This is a great one for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard By Which to Judge
Like the other reviewers, I looked forward to this show each day after school. Hooked on sci-fi by Star Trek and Star Wars, this show took my appreciation of the genre to new heights. The best thing about this cartoon was that it evolved as time went on. Starting out with a primitive look and simple characters, the show's look and feel developed a depth few small screen attempts at sci-fi have equalled. A LOT of thought went into the design of the technology and the backplot for this show. Don't let the naysayers convince you that it's just a cartoon. Anyone who's serious about their sci-fi should own these videotapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I now remember why I rushed home from school
Every weekday at 3:30, the local channel ran this show. I remember the ship with the large hole in the front that could do some nasty damage to anyone in its path. I also remember falling in love with the sci fi genra because of this show. Now I get the video of the second series which got cut off when I was a kid. This set is what I had dreamed of having when a kid. The entirety of each series in a collection as opposed to seperate video tapes with two episodes each. Each of the collection tapes have four episodes or more each. As I watched I remembered how well developed the characters were, which is quite a bit for a cartoon, in fact I forgot I was watching a cartoon, this is probably due to the increadible story of this saga. I highly recomend this for anyone that grew up with this cartoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Unsurpassed Twenty Years Later
Though the animation is a bit dated by current standards, this series has the best characters and most dramatic storyline of any anime to date. Kids today NEED to see this so they can forget about the mass marketed Poke-crud of today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trelaina Prevails
Soapy saga of an abandoned ship and world continues. Star Blazers is the story of love and war and the battle of good and evil. Planet earth has been saved and now Earth and the Star Force are plagued again by a new enemy, a more powerful force-The Comet Empire. Under the new command of Derek Wildstar can the Star Force prevail against this new evil empire? Can the Star Force maintain their victory over Desslock? For all of you who have become intrigued by series 1, you must see this series, it is the best and probably set the stage for Home World. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Saga
This is a great Saga. It starts with where the Majin Buu Saga left off. This time, however, Buu is changing and he will continue to do this throughout the saga. Many different warriors will fuse together and the entire action is truly intense. It has a lot more fight scenes than the Majin Buu Saga (not saying that less fight scenes made that saga bad, it's just a fact) and it is really fun to watch.

What I must say, however, is that I highly reccommend buying the Kid Buu Saga too because the end is quite a cliffhanger and really is a good place to start watching the Kid Buu Saga from. Anyway, I say that you should buy this, but the choice is really yours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest sagas of all time.
This saga starts out as a simple quest for seven dragonballs. Including all of the dbz gang. At first it seemed slow, then as new faces entered the sceen. The Namek Saga, became more than just a quest for the Dragonballs. All of the people on planet Namek fought for their lives. Where the biggest villan in dbz history arrives. Freiza, is probably my favorite bad guy. Mearly because in the Namek Saga, he is a very calm, and very creepy type of villan. The Ginyu Force, was also a brilliant team. Which were evil Freiza's hench men. The Namek Saga, ended with such a teaser, that you could stand waiting for the next episode. Personally I think that the Namek Saga was unlike anything I'd seen in a dbz series. Just the way everyone on planet Namek, found out all about the Nameks. Also the way that every one grew so strong, and their power levels were so incredible. The very last episode, was where Goku was just arriving on planet Namek, and this is when I got a big case of the goosebumps. Goku had been training at 100 times earth's normal gravity. So he obviously was going to arrive the thrill of the Saga. I would recomend this Saga to anyone who is interested with Dragonballz.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too bad we ain't in Japan!
I have seen this series with the origional japanese dialogue, and needless to say this english version is a far cry from the intensity of the orgionals. Did you know there are well over two hundred fifty episodes to this series? I cannot remember exactly how many... all I know is I want every last one- uncut and uncensored! The voices for Gohan, Kurillin, and Vegita in the english version are pathetic. Episodes are missing from the Namek Saga and, quite frankly, it is a shame. I would like to see the whole set, unabridged and not tainted by censorship. Dragonball Z is a violent series, much like Fist of the North Star... with comedy. As to when FUNinamtion will get off its rear and give us hungry DBZ fans what we really want (everything, of course) and not give us this non-fat version... who knows? They should stop treating this like a kid's show and treat it the way it was meant to be treated. Oh, by the way... did anyone know there is another Dragonball series after Dragonball Z? As slow as FUNimation is with getting the episodes out, it probably won't reach american shores until 2003. It's a crying shame...

1-0 out of 5 stars To all the idiots out there
This is addressed to any person out there over the age of 7, who watches this program: you should be taken outdoors and shot, for you are wasting valuable air and space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Namek Saga

Goku is in the hospital and Gohan, Krillin, and Bluma decide to find the dragon balls on Namek. After having alittle bit of trouble in space they finally end up on namek. There they find freeza and his gang torturing the nameks and are on the same quest to find the dragon balls. Goku finally heels and is able to join them on there quest. Vegeta also is heeled and finds out that freeza is also after the dragon balls to he rushes to namek too. Now krillin, bulma, and Gohan have to deal with freeza, and vegeta. Goku hurry up and get your butt to namek as soon as possible. This box set is only in english. A great item. A must have for all DBZ fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be warned! These are the edited dub episodes!
Read on for my review of the Namek Saga box set.

BASIC PLOT:
The story for the Frieza Saga, the second of four major sagas that make up Dragon Ball Z, goes something like this. Many of the Z fighters died fighting against the Saiyans, so the surviving members of the crew decide to make a mission to Namek, the planet where the Dragon Balls originated (since they are sure to have another set there.) They arrive on the planet only to discover the horrible truth - Vegeta is also there searching for the balls! And that's the LEAST of their troubles! Frieza, an ultra-strong warrior with a huge army, is ALSO looking for them! And Frieza is even STRONGER than Vegeta! And to make matters worse, Goku won't be arriving on planet until a week after Krillin, Gohan, and Bulma! Will the Z crew be able to defeat Frieza and get the Dragon Balls to wish their friends back to life?

EPISODE/DVD OPINIONS:
When you do anime DVDs, it's an unwritten rule that the DVDs include both an uncut English dub version and an uncut Japanese version with English subtitles. AND ALL THESE DVDS HAVE IS THE EDITED DUB! I admit, the voice actors FUNimation hired for the dub version all do the voices of their respective characters well (all except for Frieza's and Vegeta's (Frieza is supposed to sound like a black guy, not a little old lady!)), but the dialogue is too inaccurate and Americanized. Also, a good deal of footage was cut (in particular from the scene where Dodoria attacks the Namek soldiers.) And needless to say, the violence was reduced so that the series could be aired on American television stations. But the greatest flaw of all is that this set is horribly incomplete - it only contains the FIRST HALF of the Frieza saga! This, my friends, is NOT the Dragon Ball Z real fans want.

OVERALL:
My advice is NOT to purchase this set. I recently heard that Pioneer will lose their rights to the older episodes of the series soon, and when they do, FUNimation will redub the episodes, and hopefully rerelease them on DVD with the original Japanese version intact. So hold off and see if that happens. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lodoss lives on in a collection of the best anime RPG ever
This is the whole shibang - the entire Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight series dubbed in English - and it rocks! The great voice acting and intriguing plot will keep you watching this series again and again...maybe even right after you just finished watching it like me. The art quality is very good and the characters all stand out well - each with their own personality attributes. The collection costs ()less also by buying the set, which is good because buying 9 or 10 cassettes can be tedious and more expensive. Parn, Deedlit, Shiris, Orson, Ashram, and others all return from the original '91 series, "The War of Heroes", and (even though Ashram and Orson have new voices) the series has kept its captivating touch with twice as many episodes as the original. After just the first 4, I already bought this nice collection which has hooked me - and should hook you on quite-possibly the best anime ever...If you don't own the whole series you're missing out on alot - it's actually worth the buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first one!
Its mixed with comedy this time making it better so i recommend viewing this series to any fan of anime if they like scorcery and swords

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like the first one you love the second....
The second series builds on the original series and introduces young new heroes. Unlike some series where everyone never ages. The way the characters are handle remind me of the dragonlance novels. Playing the opening and closing credits everytime is overkill though...

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh... it's ok
Plot: The bad guys are trying to destroy Lodoss, and once again Parn, Deedlit and Kashue must stop them, but this time with some new help. In comes Spike, Leaf, Little Neese and others to help save Lodoss.

My thoughts: It's.... ok. Very much like a role-playing game. The opening song and opening sequence is excellent, if only the rest of the show was as good. Spike has cool hair, and I like elves. Neese looks one way at first, then all of a sudden is drawn a different way. I've seen the first 7 (of 9) tapes, but the show hasn't given me much interest to watch the other two. The dub is bad, and I like dubbed anime. The redeeming quality? The "Welcome to Lodoss Island" SD shorts between the episodes are wonderful, very funny and well done. I wish you could buy just that part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series
This is by far one of the best anime series I have seen. I rank it with Revolutionary Girl Utena. The Music is wonderful and I think the story is tremendous. I don't normally fall in love with anime characters as quickly as I fell in love with these. I actually cried when you know who dies, I didn't cry at the end of escaflowne but I cried there. This is an all around great anime and I would recomend it for everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Amazing!
If this doesn't take your breath away then nothing can!

Utena is the most amazing shoujo (girl's) anime I have ever seen, if not THE most amazing anime I have ever seen. It's tough to rival this incredibly creative series.

Often criticized for being to 'weird' I praise Utena for it's bold moves in the world of shoujo! An interesting and *completly* unique plotline... this is like nothing you have ever seen before.

Pushing the limits on sexual barriers, and always keeping you guessing and surprised, the craziness of Utena can capture any heart.

Mature viewer's will enjoy the depth that the creators went into on every episode, including new battle themes with amazing lyrics that pertain to each character. New songs every episode, and all of the music is enough to make your heart sing. An excellent opening and closing theme, and new battle themes each episode you can NEVER get bored listening to Utena.

The main plotline is a young girl named Utena who goes to the Ohtori Academy. She was visited by a Prince when she was a very young girl and he gave her a rose signet ring. Ever since then she has dreamed of becoming a prince herself, and she dreams of being able to save young princess' from danger. When she gets into a duel with Saiyonji over the welfare of a friend she discovers a whole new world where she can finally become the prince she alwasy dreamed of.

A battle arena with an upside down castle, and a rose bride who can summon the power of Dios into a sword. Whoever wins the duel becomes engaged to the Rose Bride, who turns out to be a fellow student named Anthy. When Utena wins the duel she most adopt Anthy as her bride. Although at first Utena is skeptical of the shy and akward girl, they soon develop a strong bond that cannot be broken.

Pairing up against beautiful bishonen Saiyonji who seems to be rough and coarse, Touga the head of Student Council who is quite the ladies man, Juri who scares even the teacher's, Nanami who is in love with her big brother Touga, Miki who only has eyes for Anthy after she plays his paino song plus numerous other characters like Wakaba and the cute Chuchu you can tell that Anthy and Utena are going to be having the time of their lives.

The DVD set includes the first 7 episodes, most notably 'Take Care, Miss Nanami' where the cute young Tsuwabuki is introduced to the scene.

I recomend watching in subtitled version, as the dubbed version isn't very pleasant on the ears.

5-0 out of 5 stars "For the Revolution of the World . . . "
This boxed set is the so-called "Student Council saga" of the Utena TV series. It chronicals Utena's introduction into the mystery of the Ohtori Academy and her duels with the 5 student council members. This is the most straightforard of the 4 sagas. It only dips into all the mystery, in which this series is engulfed. It is a SHOJO series, which means that it was originally aimed at young girls. But don't let that turn you away; I have found that SHOJO series are often the best anime has to offer, possibly because what young girls watch in Japan and what young girls watch here are completely different (I think this series has a 13+ rating). But don't think of it as a "girls' series." Think of it as a cross of THE X-FILES with SAILOR MOON with some soap opera elements tossed in for good measures. As I have said before, there is A LOT of symbolism and mystery in this series: Who is End of the World? Who will be the one to bring revolution to the world? What is the significance of the Rose Bride? Why is Miki always timing things with his stopwatch? (Ok, so the last question is never actually answered.) This series gets better and better with every episode, until the SHOCKING conclusion in ep. 39 (this is only the first 13 episodes, the rest hasn't been liscensed yet). I highly recommend this series: it's my favorite of all time (higher than Sailor Moon). Buy this! Maybe Software Sculptors will liscence the rest of the series if enough people do!

5-0 out of 5 stars Charles Solomon, I Challenge You to A Duel
Dear Mr. Solomon,
I must admit that when I first started watching anime, I was a little cautious about it. The Japanese culture seemed so far fetched to me, that I wasn't able to fully grasp it's delicacies at first. However, after watching several VERY impressive anime series, including His and Her Circumstances, Love Hina, Fruits Basket, Steel Angel Kurumi, and Please Teacher, I have found that anime is something more than just a cute cartoon.
Anime is an adult movie, not for children unless they are very mature. It explores mature themes, such as, in Utena at least, homoeroticism (not homosexuality, homoeroticism is feeling romantic love for someone of the same sex), incestuous love and its dangers, criticism of those who would beat someone faithful to them, and the threat of an impending Apocalypse.
If you show Utena to young children, I suggest you rethink it. But Utena as an adult movie is fantastic. Beautiful animation, beautiful characters, and a look at life as it really is, not closed behind doors as in Hollywood. Sure, most of the characters are barbie-doll figures, and unrealistically proportioned, but the trials they go through are reflective of the human condition in a way that cartoon series in the US are not.
Watch anime for the culture, the art, the deeper message behind the cute and bouncy exterior, Charles Solomon. Stop watching anime as though you're a little kid.
Sincerely,
A Literature and Philosophy University Student

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly deep
When I first picked up this series at a local video store, I expected it to be some cheesy, melodramatic shojo (girls') anime. Was I ever wrong.

Utena, superficially, is the story of a determined young girl who goes through many trials for the sake of her friend, the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya. Underneath all that it is a heavily symbolic story about the balance between masculinity and femininity and humanity's struggle against its own flaws.

Utena is directed by Ikuhara, who also did Sailor Moon - but be warned, Utena is nothing like Sailor Moon. While the anime is still lighter than the original manga, it deals with controversial subjects such as incest, rape, and lesbianism. Young children can watch Utena without fear, as it contains no nudity or violence whatsoever, but a ten-year-old simply won't get the complexity of plot in Utena, which was written for teenagers.

Ikuhara's handling of Utena is superb: the music, the animation and the voices are great - but the English pronounciations are still awful (Utena TenjOH, people, not Tenjoo). Utena is a geart watch even for guys; you can't call yourself an otaku if you don't see it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Intriguing
When I saw the first episode I was more than a bit confused, I thought, 'hey, maybe the next one will clear things up', but it just got more and more complicated.
What I like about this serie is that it's original, I mean, which other serie can you name that has an unwilling heroine looking for a mysterious prince from her past ending up in a strange academy where people are fighting to possesss the equally mysterious 'Rose Bride'?
Initially I only watched the first load, the Rose Collection, it was left me by my cousin, and afterwards I was just like...man, why didn't he have the REST?!!! It's truly an original masterpiece, just what I'd expect from the director of Sailor Moon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A g8 anime 2 see if u like comedy and action
This anime was a great one, with our greedy, little sorceress Lina and her "bodyguard", the thick-headed Gourry. The episodes are gret, but I give it a 4 cuz the voices weren't all that~ but I do recommend this set...I guess you can overlook the fact that Amelia's voice is blah~! (The delivery is good...I got the set about 2 or 3 weeks after I sent the check.) I suggest that you should also see the other episodes of Slayers, and Slayers NEXT~

4-0 out of 5 stars Slayer is a Must
On a fateful night in November of 2001, I was introduced to my first anime in the form of Slayers. Since that night, I have spent way too much money on anime, even having to go so far as to rearrange my room to make room for my anime tapes. That is the effect this series had on me.

You want humour? This series has it in bundles. From Lina, a somewhat-girlish(Pink clothes), somewhat tomboyish(Come on! She kicks butt!) 15-year-old sorceress, to Gourry, the less-than-intelligent swordsman, you will find much to laugh at. However, when Slayers gets serious, it gets serious. The last episode of the 1st story arc(In Tape 3), had me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen.

Slayers is a must for any anime-fan or fantasy-lover. You become immersed in the unreal world they live in. The characters are engaging and fun to watch. I have some disputes with the dubbed actor for Zelgadis in this set. Ditto with the voice actress for Amelia(Who makes the poor girl thoroughly unlikable). Despite this, I still enjoyed this set of Slayers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disfuntional Final Fantasy!
Slayers is one of those anime that could be turned into a video game, and not lose any of it's storyline. Those people who enjoy video games such as RPG's (Role Playing Games) are bound to love this show. The main character is Lina Inverse, a young girl who's temper is rivaled only by the spells she casts. Throughout the show companions join up with her, such as a dumber-then-dirt swordsman and an insane over-rightous girl.

The animation in this show is alright; I've seen better in such animes as Fushigi Yugi or Cowboy Bebop. My main complaint, though, is that in the earlier stages of the show it seems to be just one battle after another, and they all seem begin and end the same way with a buch of beasts surrounding he heros, and the heros beating them again and again and again.

Overall, the show is enjoyable and funny anime that all ages will find amusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent anime, especially for dubbed...
This is excellent dubbed anime. I can't get enough of Slayers! I watch it practically every week... I can watch it over 100 times and I still get a kick out of it! Each time I watch it, it excites me more and more. Genius! It's just plain genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best So Far

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding series of epic proportions
Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play is definitely my favourite full-length anime series. It has an exciting plot with very believable twists that always keeps the viewer thinking. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger that makes one crave to watch more.

The series has 52 episodes, and the red Suzaku Box Set contains the first half (26 episodes). The multi-fold box set case is very beautiful and the finest I've seen to date. I would expect that the second half will be presented in a similar blue Seiryu Box Set.

The DVD version is bilingual with optional subtitles and can satisfy all audiences that may prefer original Japanese dialogue with/without subtitles, or dubbed English. Dubbed English and subtitle translations are never perfect, but I believe they've done a very good job here.

In conclusion, I highly recommend getting the Fushigi Yugi series in DVD format starting with this Suzaku box set, and hope the waiting goes well for the next DVD box set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite it's failings, a classic
Over the top shoujo (girls) romantic content, an annoying centric character, incredibly likable secondary characters, and a couple anime firsts for me. Yes, this is the "Mysterious Play" I've heard so much about.

Fushigi Yuugi is, at first glance, a typical shoujo anime. Two high school exam candidates, Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo, are in the library reseaching, when they come across a book titled 'Universe of the Four Gods.' No sooner do they pick it up, then they are drawn into this book, and straight into ancient China! Miaka and Yui become separated, and Miaka finds herself in the Konan Empire, being hailed as the Priestess of the phoenix god Suzaku. She has to find the Seven Seishi (warriors) bearing the "mark of Suzaku" (think of it as a tattoo that shows up when they're fighting), and summon the god to have all her wishes fulfilled.

She finds her seven warriors: Tamahome, her money-obsessed love interest devoted to his family. Hotohori, the narcissistic Emperor of Konan, also in love with Miaka (of course...) Nuriko, my personal favorite, a sassy crossdresser in love with Hotohori (and a guy, in case you're wondering). Chichiri, the chipper sorcerer in training. Tasuki, the brash, energetic mountain bandit. Mitsukake, the stoic healer. And Chiriko, the 13-year-old genius. After enlisting the help of the sorceress Taiitsikun, she begins.

But she soon finds out that Yui has been chosen by the Kotou Empire to summon rival god, Seiryu. Life in the book has not been easy for Yui, and after finding out that Miaka is in a relationship with Tamahome, whom she loves, she begins to jealously resent Miaka, and works against her with the cruel Nakago to summon her own god first.

Yes, I like this anime a lot. Although the romance can be tough to take at times ("MIAAAKKKAAAAA!" "TAMAHOMEEEEEEE!") and I like neither Miaka NOR Tamahome very much, it's not a big deal, there are other aspects that I love. Like, for example, the wonderful Nuriko. He is my favorite character, and one of the most entertaining to watch, in my humble opinion. Most of the secondary characters have a little something to love, particularly Chichiri and Tasuki, who not only provide great comic relief, but who's partnership in the later episodes seems so genuine that it might as well be real life. The dynamics between the seishi is really what makes the show; not all the business about Suzaku and gods. There wasn't anything really special between the Seiryu seven, so their scenes were not nearly as interesting to watch.

The animation is nothing special. It gets a little sloppy at times, and sometimes the characters' motions are a bit jerky. There are some lovely colors used, however. I know that sounds incredibly lame, but Suzaku's vibrant reds and golds just make it come to life for you. However, Yu Watase, who did the original manga story and artwork, had much more vivid character designs, and compared to hers, they look a bit squashed.

The music could be very nice at times (the opening comes to mind, with it's Ancient China meets peppy J-Pop approach) but some of the other music was a bit over the top (Miaka and Tamahome's theme was quite overplayed... I got pretty sick of it). The voice acting I had no problem with, generally. Nuriko redefined the "bishounen with a girly voice" stereotype, Chichiri was the same genius behind Escaflowne's Van and Fruits Basket's Kyo, Hotohori's made every fan girl's dream come true, and Miaka's was just plain annoying.

Fushigi Yuugi, despite it's failings, is a favorite of mine. This isn't necessarily because of a thrills-a-minute plot, or a fantastic, deep meaning, or splendid animation. I love it because it creates characters you can fall in love with, and get extremely attached to, which, as this anime proves, can be hazardous. Keep a box of tissues handy. You'll need it. Trust me, I did!

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it
The first half of Fushigi Yugi, despite a few bumps along the way, is certainly worth seeing (if not also seeing again, and again, and so on).

While lead character Miaka may grate on many people's nerves, and love interest/lead "bishounen" Tamahome lacks something no main character should be without (namely, a personality), the supporting cast more than makes up for this.

The series gets off to a pretty quick start, with Miaka and her best friend Yui discovering The Universe of the Four Gods and being taken inside (Yui is almost instantly sent back to the real world). Miaka is made the Priestess of Suzaku and she must find the seven celestial warriors that will protect her. Once this is accomplished, the empire of Konan will be saved and Miaka can have any wish she wants.

Once all the background is established, the story slows down for a bit, but it soon becomes apparent that all is easier said than done. The first half ends on a real cliffhanger that will leave anyone who sticks with it more than enough reason to watch the last half.

As I said before, the supporting cast is wonderful. There's crossdressing Nuriko, who's cool beyond cool and a personal favorite, masked monk Chichiri, emperor Hotohori, and many more. There are so many supporting characters with such distinct personalities that at least one of them should appeal to anyone--but don't think they'll be too confusing to keep track of; it's simple enough, really.

The one who'll really win your sympathies, though, is Yui--if you can find it in your heart to look past her deeds to her real motivation, that is.

Overall, though the main couple is quite possibly the worst couple in the history of anime, Fushigi Yugi manages to be engrossing and entertaining. You'll laugh, you'll cry (especially later on), and hopefully you'll want to see it through to the very end.

5-0 out of 5 stars [The music is fantastic]
Wow. Fushigi Yugi is great. The music is fantastic, the animation gorgeous although sometimes the animators were lazy, long (52 eps.), creative, everything I could ask for. The first box covers the first 26 episodes. It's about two girls (Miaka and Yui) who get sucked into the book world. Yui manages to get back to their world, but reads about Miaka in the book (not too important yet). Miaka becomes the priestess of Suzaku who will gather the seven stars of Suzaku and will summond suzaku and be granted her wishes. I know, it sounds like an average, cliche, shojo fantasy. It's not. The story goes further. A lot of the first box is about gathering the warriors. The Japanese voices are ten times better, as always but the English voices could be a lot worse. The box ends at a cliff hanger. A good one and by then you're so close to the characters that you just have to know what happens next. The biggest down fall is the price. I have never seen one of these boxes cost less than 100 dollars. Sometimes I have seen them at 200. But if a friend or someone you know already has it, definitely watch it. If not, read the manga. Buying the manga for the whole series is about the cost of 1 box. The best thing is, you can read it in stores. I definitely recommend this series to any Watase or Inuyasha (and a shojo) fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars iViva la Fushigi Yugi!
Okay, I was about ready to give up on anime *die DBZ die!*, but then a really good friend introduced me to the wonderful world of Fushigi Yugi and now I'm getting into the real high quality stuff (Fruits Basket, InuYasha, Escaflowne, Pretear, etc.) It has everything: humor, adventure, action, romance, hot guys (I thought the DVD player was going to melt for a minute there ^_^ ). The dub is okay, mostly because that's the only way I've been able to watch it, so I'll have to find the time for the Japanese version one of these days. If your wallet can handle the hit and you have a weekend with nothing to do, I highly recommend this anime. After FY, try some of the others by Yu Watase like Ceres and Alice 19th (which is still just in manga form) ... Read more

Author Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels offer an alternate reality that has proven irresistible to an avid, international audience--a universe where the world really is flat, after all, supported by four elephants floating through the cosmos on the back of a giant turtle. It's a world where fantasy conventions have been filtered through an antic, satirical lens that slyly warps the actions and motives of the wizards, witches, monarchs, and knaves that populate them, suggesting a sword & sorcery counterpart to Douglas Adams's venerable A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Developed for British television as an animated, six-episode miniseries, Wyrd Sisters marks the first attempt at transferring the franchise to video. As presented here on three tapes, with a running time of approximately 147 minutes, Pratchett's cracked re-imagining of familiar mythological themes retains its verbal wit and realizes colorfully stylized visual terrain, although modest animation techniques relegate its impact to the realm of older TV cartoons. Sci-fi aficionados spoiled by lavish computer graphics and the current big-screen state of the art will wonder what all the fuss is about.

Pratchett's fans, however, won't mind. An intricate plot, set in motion by the murder of King Verence by the utterly dimwitted Duke Felmet, encompasses a smuggled baby, an itinerant theatrical troupe, a kiss lasting 18 years, time travel, and other pokerfaced twists of fate, cohering around the three title heroines, a coven of rather dotty witches.A droll, sociable Death (voiced by Christopher Lee) epitomizes the breezy comic spirit that fuels Pratchett's stories. --Sam Sutherland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I have seen many books that were turned into movies and shows, both live action and animated. 90% of the time it is a complete let down. So I was highly skeptical of Wyrd Sisters. I am a devoted fan of the Discworld series and despite living in the United States I have been able to obtain just about everything printed about the Discworld. I got this video and expected the usual terrible adaptation where the animation is cheap and all wrong for what I pictured and the story is changed horribly because the movie producers think we are so stupid we will only get a joke or a plot line if its yelled in our faces.

But I was delighted with these videos. They are probably the best adaptation of a novel I have ever seen. The movie was well animated, I think, probably because it was not made in the USA! But animation aside, the story itself was a brilliant adaptation of the book, and a lot the humor is very subtle and you can miss it if you aren't careful. And I loved the British accents, because I tend to not think of the books that way when I am reading them. This video had me laughing so hard at points my stomach hurt, and I will be watching again and again to catch what I missed from laughing, if I can contain myself that is.

So in summary all I can say is get it if you like the Discworld novels, get this video because you won't be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful adaptation of a great book
First off, I should warn you that I am a Pratchett fan. I love the Discworld stories, and am very fond of his witches.

Whenever a beloved book is adapted to a screen, be it large or small, there is the risk of the director or the screenwriter botching the job (_The Postman_ comes to mind). Happily Keven Costner had nothing to do with this production.

The animation is of high quality, the voices were well cast (Christopher Lee does a splendid job as YOU KNOW WHO) and the story kept me and my children (ages 6 and 9) involved and amused.

Sure there are some plot elements that were shortened up, but I guess they didn't want an epic (speaking of Kevin Costner). And why in the name of Nipper did they put 1:48 of vid on 3 tapes? I recommend the DVD version just to save the shelf space!

Overall: A fine entertainment, not just for Pratchett fans.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad!
I'm a HUGE Pratchett fan, own all the Discworld books, but this is just dreadful stuff. Poor drawing, poor animation, poor voice work, uninteresting music. Too bad, really. I bought both this and Soul Music, and wish I hadn't!

4-0 out of 5 stars Really...
The book is better, it's as simple as that. If you're in need of something to watch and love the Discworld, give it a spin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Discworld Brought to Life
I've loved Terry Pratchett's Discworld from the first words of The Colour of Magic and his delightful description of the luggage. I will admit that the voice they gave Magrat is grating on the nerves and the animation could have been a bit better. Honestly, I think the only three characters they got right on were Granny Weatherwax, Death and Verence (the fool).
But to see the book brought so wonderfully to life, so many little things they retained, and they didn't cheat on the spell! I adore it. This may not be for the 'perfectionists who think they are Number One Pratchett Fans', but for the rest of us poor mortals, it's absolutely endearing. ... Read more
