2-0 out of 5 stars Hatfields & the McCoys truth be told
The last review I read on the movie I found to be helpful because I was debating on buying this film. I just recently read an exstensive article on the famous feud that shed a little light on the subject. For all these years all I knew was what was refered to as the "yellow journalist view". I decided not to purchase the movie because if I watch anything I want it to be factual. If anyone knows of a dvd, vhs or book that is fact-filled, I'd be grateful if you would post that information so I can get the real historical story. Thank you in advance = )

3-0 out of 5 stars Unrealized Potential
I snapped up a used copy of this movie at the local flea market and couldn't wait to watch it. Having bought, viewed and enjoyed Sounder, Where the Lilies Bloom, Dollmaker, etc. I was eager to add this Southern drama to my collection. However, it paled in comparison to these classics. I was lost within the first 8 minutes of the film, but it really didn't matter due to the poor script, poor acting, poor score and poor cinematography. I really hoped for more but was sadly disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Feud Movie!!!
Clyde Wares Movie "The Hatfields and The McCoys" is a vivid and excellent portrayal of the two fighting, feuding families on the West Virginia and Kentucky sides.Jack Palance does a superb acting job in this film.Wonderful!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Real McCoy
Although there is some good characterizations of the leaders of both families, the film doesn't really tell the truth of what happened. As the 3x great grandson of Randall McCoy (played by Steve Forrest) I hope a movie will one day come out that shows the feud in an accurate way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin Sheens best acting in a Movie ever!!
In this 1971 Movie,a young Martin Sheen does a superb job on portraying a cocientious objector(Ashley Gatrell) during the American Civil War which is essentially a one man show filmed in the Hills of Doddridge County West Virginia.Cylde Ware also does a superb job of directing(Writer of such TV series such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza).Filmed at the peak of the Vietnam Anti-war movement, this film should prove to be a cult classic!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Martin Sheen Movie ever!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than "Castaway"!! Sheen Rules!! Overlooked!!
This movie shows the impact of isolation over a long period of time, in this case of a civil war deserter living in a cave for 3-4 years and how he copes with the extreme loneliness both mentally and physically.Filmed back in 1971,A young Martin Sheen does a superb acting job that's much better than Tom Hanks"Castaway"especially considering that Martin Sheen did the movie on a very much lower salary and that's probably an understatement and budget!!So Get your money's worth!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for castaway fans!!Sheen Rules!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great, not awful - rather amusing & offbeat
This low budget film starring a very young Martin Sheen isinteresting... This film is so low budget in fact, that Martin Sheen is virtually the only human character you ever really see on screen. But somehow this odd approach actually works and thematically it fits into the film very well.

"No Drums, No Bugles" is loosely based on the life of Ashby Gatrill, a West Virginia "legend" (actually, very few people from WV have ever heard of him), who hides in the mountains to avoid serving in either army during the Civil War. Yes, there was an Ashby Gatrill, and yes he did carve his name on a cave-like rock formation in central WV, and yes he was hiding out to avoid military service, but it was during World War I, not the Civil War. I've seen the actual rocks he carved his name on and it reads something like this "Ashby Gatrill: 1917-1918". But anyway, that's Hollywood for ya.

A must for Martin Sheen fans and anyone interested in seeing a forgotten low budget anti-war film from the Vietnam era. ... Read more

In this film,3 honest, innocent men meet an outlaw stranger who is anxious to sell his horse very cheap and after the purchase, later finds out that it's former owner was the deceased legend "Billy the Kid". Given the name "Jim",the horse creates an evil spell on them and they soon go on a murderous robbery spree.Starring James Brolin,Richard Roundtree and the acting debut of Clark Gable's only son John Clark Gable.Bad Jim is an excellent western that contains the spectacular scenery which makes it very well worth watching!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Jim is Bad
WEll, I thought I'd give this one a shot, and wish I could have shot it! If it was possible to give no stars for a video, this would be it! From the start it's like watching a script read-through, and you can't help but keep watching with the thought that anything this bad must get better! It doesn't! If this isn't the one with Clarke Gables son in it, please disregard this reveiew. Thank you, Botley. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Martin Sheen fans!!Brilliantly Acted!!Haunting!!
In this early 1970's movie that's in the same spirit of"Tennessee Williams" directed by Clyde Ware is a rather haunting tale starring a young Martin Sheen portraying Bluff Jackson as a Footloose, smooth talking drifter going into an isolated mountainside home in West Virginia(filmed on location in Doddridge County WV near the town of West Union)where there lives a 130 year old civil war veteran along with his 2 beautiful, blonde naive, virginal great, great, great grandaughters who have never been kissed, living in an isolated 19th Century lifestyle and how Bluff(Sheen) dramatically alters their lives. This is a little known but brilliantly acted gem of a movie. It's a fascinating, nostalgic must see film especially for Martin Sheen fans!! ...
