4-0 out of 5 stars Cold War Ends in a Farce
I grew up during the Cold War -- in the Soviet Union and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s, so this movie for me has a whole different context. I like the premise: take two unsuspecting Americans to Russia and tell them they are in Nebraska. Quite a dig at Nebraska, wouldn't you say? And the 80's hair styles, are they not totally ridiculous?

This movie has wit and humor, although it may not be quite the laugh out loud movie that one may first expect. Still I highly recommend it. Preston is very sexy, especially with her dance moves. And the Russians are portrayed as cute and simplistically noble in this film. The Cold War is over, but the movie is still entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars 80's coolest on travolta
travolta's coolest really before getting fav. i feel... hes mainly the man... very awesome movie and i am just waiting till its on dvd... 1st time watching,,, quickly got me interested with travolta and his wife together... and really an awesome movie...

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny and totally mindless!!
TWO NEW YORKERS TRAVOLTA AND GROSS HAVE BEEN TRICKED TO OPEN A NIGHTCLUB IN NEBRASKA BUT IN REALITY THEY ARE TRANSPORTED TO THE USSR TO TEACH MANNERS TO RUSSIAN SPIES LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES. TOTALLY MORONIC SCRIPT WITH A SENSE OF STUPIDITY BUT YET IT'S FUN TO SEE TRAVOLTA MAKE A FOOL OF HIMSELF. IT'S SILLY BUT YET FUNNY BUT NOTHING YOU WANT TO SEE AGAIN AND AGAIN.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gem in a dungheap
Whoever earlier compared this movie favorable to The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels, Jerry Maquire, As Good as it Gets and Bringing up Baby must (as James Earl Jones said in Field of Dreams) be seeing a whole team of psychiatrists. It's an awful piece of mediocrity from a period when Travolta seemed incapable of picking good material (sort of like this year). However --

that being said, you MUST see this movie if only for the fact that, believe it or not, Travolta's hottest dance sequence in any movie is here. How did it end up here? Who knows? But from the moment Kelly Preston slinks onto the dance floor and rivets his attention, and for about three all-too-short minutes afterwards, The Experts takes its place in the pantheon of Bad Movies with Unforgettable Scenes. I actually watched this on a local commercial station one night a few years ago, and the number was cut by almost half because it's so suggestive. And that's not to say it's just an oglefest of insinuation -- there are some great moves here.

So for however few bucks ..., pick it up and enjoy this unforgettable dance, as long as you understand that the rest of it is pure caca.

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny and a must see movie
When I was going to see this movie I first put it on and said this is funny but it is going to end up dumb. But it actually ended up being a pretty good movie. And I thought that was a newer movie like from the 80s and I was write but it is not to predictible well at least not as much as some movies are. i say if you need some fun or cherring up this is your movie. ... Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis created their popular toque-wearing, beer-swigging "Great White North" hosers Bob and Doug McKenzie on the great TV comedy show SCTV to fulfill a Canadian broadcasting regulation that required Canadian shows to have a certain amount of "Canadian content." Bob and Doug became so popular that they made a hit record (Take Off, with Geddy Lee, nasalist with the Canadian rock band Rush) and this Major Motion Picture--filmed in "Hoserama." Bob and Doug are the Cheech and Chong of beer, so the plot involves the boys's attempt to scam a free case of Elsinore beer from the brewery, which is run by a mad scientist Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who wants to rule the world, like all mad scientists do. Strange Brew's intoxicating blend of hops and malt--er ... cleverness and silliness--earned it a loyal and well-deserved cult following. --Jim Emerson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty movie, eh?
I saw this movie in the theatre when I was a teenager, and I don't think I had ever laughed so hard in my life...the first fifteen minutes of this movie alone is absolutely unsurpassed in comedic cinema history.
>
Having said that, I realize that watching a movie when you're 15 and then watching the same movie when you're 35 can be two totally different experiences (this was REALLY driven home when I saw "Purple Rain" awhile back for the first time since high school...man, what was I THINKING?!). All the same, this movie is still funny as hell, and it still compares favorably with similar movies made these days; if you liked "Dude, Where's My Car?", you'll probably think this movie's a lot better (think of it as "Dude, Where's My Beer?").
>
The DVD presentation isn't as bare bones as I had initially feared (even though a Rick Moranis/Dave Thomas commentary track in character a la The Hanson Brothers on the most recent DVD re-issue of "Slap Shot" would've been a nice touch); the SCTV skit reminds you of why these guys caught on so well and achieved their cult following, and the animated bit is okay (if "Clerks" could go animated, why not the McKenzie Brothers?).
>
This is definitely a comedy "must-have", and I recommend basing a "Canadian Culture Night" party around this movie, with "Slap Shot" following it as a deserving chaser.
>
Cheers, eh?!

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Great White North, eh?
In 1983, Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas -- but not the Dave Thomas from Wendy's) introduced the world to the mysterious land of Canada -- a place overflowing with beer and donuts. A place where everyone wears flannel and toques while they're playing hockey. A place where they use words like "hoser" and "eh."

When Bob and Doug try to scam the Elsinore brewery out of a free case of beer, they end up with jobs instead. There, they get stumble upon Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who's planning to take over the beer-drinking world with his mind-altering chemicals.

At the beginning of Strange Brew, the brothers announce that their movie was filmed in 3-B -- "Three beers and it looks good." I'd say that's pretty accurate. Strange Brew is a fabulously brainless movie -- full of bad jokes, bad acting, and bad effects. It's a must-see for any college student -- preferably after a long night of drinking. But if you're sober, be warned that it takes a special sense of humor to enjoy this one. Those with that special sense of humor, however (you know who you are), will love this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Burps
A magnificent achievement - ranks up there with Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Blues Brothers, and Monty Python's Holy Grail and Life of Brian.

But Strange Brew is better - cos it's about Beer! Right on eh! And if any of you Hosers out there don't like it, TAKE OFF EH!

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny despite holes.
This DVD is a "must have" for those of us who loved SCTV. However, it's definately not for those who aren't. It's not that this isn't a funny and entertaining movie, it is. It's just that it's not a "standout" comedy. The core of the film, ie; characters, production, story are all there, but unfortunately many of the details are done halfa**ed. There are several parts of the story that don't tie together well, and certain scenes that either should have played out more or simply didn't fit.

The DVD production is also a disappointment. I agree with a previous reviewer in that the lack of commentary from Rick and/or Dave is unforgivable. Still, this is certainly a movie worth renting or watching on T.V.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great movie should have great DVD
No commentary from Moranis and Thomas? Why buy a DVD that has no commentary, especially 20 years after the fact, especially for such a rip-roaring film? I'll just keep watching my lame VHS until a worthwhile DVD is released. ... Read more

This oddly stylistic cartoon features Poochini, a talking dog who dallies in mischief while living with a 1950s suburban family. Four short flicks comprise this half-hour program providing snippets of the pooch's new life after leaving an upper-crust home to be adopted by an eccentric inventor. In one tale, a coffee-brewing invention goes awry, turning Poochini into a caffeine-crazed canine on a neighborhood frenzy; in another, a bad bump on Poochini's head causes him to try on new identities as he grapples with amnesia. The best of the bunch begins when a gopher ransacks Billy's perfectly manicured lawn. When he and his dad team up to catch the critter, Poochini joins forces with the rascal rodent and slapstick antics prevail. Accompanied by smooth jazz, the cartoon is drawn in similar style to the famed Jetsons (1962), doused in avocado greens and mustard yellows suitable to yesteryear. While never ascending beyond Saturday morning fare, it's mildly engaging as such. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You're lucky if you own it!
I am one of the lucky ones who owns this movie! So I watch it over and over again and have the same great fun. By all means, watch it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for GWD fans!
OK -- I admit that I originally only bought this video because I wanted to see Geriant Wyn Davies in something other than Forever Knight.

After watching the video, however, I can definitely recommend this to just about anyone. The movie is light-hearted fun. Jean Stapleton is perfect as the mother who doesn't know when to let go.

The alternate title of "Ghost Mom" would make more sense than the "Bury Me in Niagara" title does. Regardless of what it is called, watch the movie and enjoy yourself for 1½ hours.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for GWD fans
Bury Me in Niagra AKA in the USA as Ghost Mom has two notable actors-- Jean Stapleton and Geraint Wyn Davies ( Nick Knight of "Forever Knight"). GWD's characer is a doctor who has an intrusive mother ( Stapleton). When she dies she holds a "lucky pebble", ( a disguised mystical ruby) and her ghost insists that her body be buried in Niagra. Road trip via ice cream truck, pursued by Chinese gangsters who want the ruby, the son finally meets his father. GWD hams it up in various scenes and while the movie lacks some credibility at times, it is a comedy in the same vein as the Hope and Cosby road trip movies. Being a GWD fan I liked to see him in a comedic role as Nick Knight was mainly too angsty. ... Read more
