Saucy character comedian extraordinaire Tracey Ullman dons the guise of her most famous personas and candidly lays the issues of Sex, Romance, Fantasy on the table for all to gawk at and admire. In this three-episode set, pulled from her successful HBO series, Ullman's characters act out and display the age-old issues that drive our desires. The elderly Chinese bakery lady philosophizes on the similarity of romance and the donut business. The Arabian stud Chic the Cab Driver tells the tale of how the "Chic magnet" came of age in the steamy desert of his homeland with a pro that begged him for more. Veteran makeup artist Ruby Romaine, Star Maker, gives professional words of wisdom and support to the rising starlets on a porn set. The middle-aged Jewish ladies duet, Fern and Kay, discuss the adventurous highlights and shady lowlights of their sex lives over a pastrami on rye. Sex, Romance, Fantasy may not provide answers to life's most complex questions, but, as always, Ullman's wry sense of humor won't disappoint. --Rob Bracco ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars British Comedy Girl Wonder makes us laugh & think
The Tracey Takes On comedy series is definitely a cut above the usual "ha-ha" material out there. Tracey Ullman finds the comedy in every day situations, but also the absurdity and irony in life's little and big surprises.

Whether it's a stereotypical portrayal of a middle-class "New York Jewish woman" fearing for the health of her heart-attack victim husband, an elderly Asian woman fulfilling her American Dream with her donut shop, or a small-time golf-pro who hesitates acknowledging her gay relationship to the world, Tracey Ullman takes on every possible viewpoint on the issues of Sex, Romance and Fantasy.

The sketch about a woman reporting to the police that she had briefly been abducted by aliens is a gem! There are many great scenes in this batch of goodies cooked up by one of Britain's brainiest comedy stars. Tracey Ullman's gift for comedy rivals that of the up-and-coming "French & Saunders" team. Tracey Takes on receives a solid 5-star rating!*****

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, Hilarious, Classic Comedy
Tracey Takes On is one of the most outstanding comedy series that I have ever seen. The show combines the literate wit of British Comedy, the American pop culture sensibility of the Harvard Lampoon, and the "broken Hollywood dream" reality of a Tarantino film. This series is a true work of genius. Not only is Tracey Ulman to be applauded, but also the writers and the supporting cast. It's unbelievable that a show of this calibre was produced in the same country as Night Court.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hillarious
Tracey is wonderful in this video. My favorite skit in this series is the Women's PGA Golfing Tour. All I can say is, "Come on baby, come to mama!" ... Read more

Tracey Ullman can make absolutely anything funny, and when she works with material straight out of show biz, she can't lose.Tracey Takes on... Movies, Vanity, Fame, three episodes (plus outtakes) from her Emmy-winning HBO series, traces her interconnected cast of characters' relationships with the Dream Factory and all its trappings.Faded star Linda Granger gets a taste of the bitter side of fame, stuntwoman Rayleen Gibson saves the day (again), and legal hotshot Sydney Kross gets a head-to-toe courtroom makeover; all of these mix Ullman's barely contained mania with a refined, mature sense of humor that lets the viewers find their own laugh lines amidst the all-too-real vignettes and conversations. Her characterizations are as detailed and biting as ever, mocking Yanks, Brits, and practically everyone else with studied ease and showing us all our most embarrassing moments writ large.Whether you've watched her avidly or have yet to experience her crazed genius, Tracey Takes On... Movies, Vanity, Fame will keep you coming back to the TV time and again. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully acted character piece.
This unappreciated gem casts a hypnotic spell that pulls the viewer into it's downbeat world and offers a compelling look at the lives of two sisters. Fanny (Elizabeth McGovern) is a young single woman whose life appears to have hit the skids. Her life as a barmaid in a ratty New Jersey shore town seems to have no focus. Enter her wild, spandex-clad sister, Veronica (Patricia Wettig), who wants Fanny to take her two little kids in while she serves time in Rikers Prison for fraud. Not only does Fanny inherit her sister's kids, but Veronica's ex-boyfriend (Michael O'Keefe) also shows up and makes a play for Fanny. The movie is basically about Fanny's redemption and rediscovery of herself as she deals with her new-found responsibilities and challenges. She resumes her life as an artist and refocuses her priorities when she assumes full parenting for the kids. This is a quirky, gritty, and involving story, and it is beautifully played by the actors (John Heard also shows up as another potential Fanny suitor), and lovingly directed by Theater and TV veteran Don Scardino. McGovern has never been better. Check this film out for a real surprise. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie
Being a big Miranda Hobbes (Sex and the City) fan, I first rented this movie only because Cynthia Nixon is in it. I loved it so much that I had to buy it. It starts off a little zany, but once you get into it you don't want it to end. It is definitely worth checking out and it has a lot of good quotes in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Romantic
I liked this movie; sweetly romantic with a bit of a twist: two artist friends (straight woman, gay man) are trying to be sophisticated and avoid any hint of having real feelings in any of their relationships. But whoops! They really do want feelings and one of them ends up with them, despite trying to deny it. Personally, I think there's a hint that both of them end up with them, but the story stops before that can be developed unfortunately. The biggest problem is that this dvd is the worst dvd I've ever rented: no menus and it's got a &*^%&^%$^&*%^&%!!! intro with ads for other movies that you can't skip. Fortunately my DVD player would let me fast forward over it, but if this weren't such a good movie, I wouldn't buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK in an eclectic kind of way.
First of all, I'll rate it for you: "R". They use the "f" word a lot. There's also about 30 seconds of partial frontal nudity ... which gets a PG-13 rating now-a-days ... during a love scene (though, they're not it love). For some reason, Blockbuster has this listed as "Youth Restricted Product". I guess that's their new term for "R". I dunno. It could be that they have phobias regarding adult conversation.

The plot is OK. Each character has a weird nickname that distracts a little from what's going on. The writing is eclectic. The final scene seems to be written by another person altogether ... perhaps the screen writer was bi-polar ... but that just makes it fun, doesn't it?

Anyway, this is a story about a woman who is afraid to make a commitment to a real relationship because it'll make her feel. But guess what happens.... ... Read more
