5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Episode
For starters, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" is a classic, and this is THE episode that fans always remember. The magic of this episode is that it's so un-Mary. Dear, sweet, genuine Mary wouldn't be the person you'd expect to behave this way. The episode isn't really about death so much as it is about an embarassing moment, which we've all been through. When Mary Richards cries, you can't help but feel for her!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, I saw it.
Well I had been hearing about this episode for years. I was pretty young with this show was out so never really saw the series.

In this show, a TV clown, who is grandmarshal of a parade shows up dressed like one of his characters. "A Giant Peanut" a rogue elefant unfortunatly breaks loose and the clown is killed when the elefant successfully tries to shell him. EVerybody in MArys office is at first shocked but then cannot help but laugh at the incident. MAry is shocked at their insensitivity. However when Mary attends the clowns funeral.........
Taking into consideration that this show is nearly 30 years old I really enjoyed it. Some of the set-ups were a bit obvious now because they are typical sit-com set ups but remember that when this show first aired they were not, in fact this is one of the shows that created the road down with many of todays sitcoms go.
So for a dose of nostalga, or even if you never saw the show in it's heydey you need to get at least THIS episode.

5-0 out of 5 stars Considered by many to be the funniest sitcom episode ever
"Chuckles Bites the Dust" (Episode #127, October 25, 1975), remains the best episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and is one of the classic situation comedy episodes of all time. Unless you have been living on another planet you know that Chuckles the Clown is killed when he is dressed as a Peanut and a rouge elephant attacks him. Mary is aghast at the gallows humor that compels the guys in the newsroom to keep making bad jokes. But then at the funeral it is Mary who has an attack of the giggles. Stop and think about it: on how many episodes of MTM does MARY get the big laughs? This is the proverbial exception that proves the rule, big time. Both writer David Lloyd and director Joan Darling earned Emmys Awards for this episode. For that matter, Mary Tyler Moore won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and the show won for Outstanding Comedy Series, probably on the strength of this legendary episode.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Classic
"Dear sweet Mary"... of everyone in the WJM newsroom,(and for those of you who know and love her like i do) she is the most loving, caring, genuine person there is - so when she finds the humor in Chuckles' death at his funeral it is hilarious! you would expect this from any one else, NEVER Mary. But the total humor in it is when the Priest praises her for laughing "that's what Chuckles would have wanted"... then she begins to sob like crazy- total classic! 1 more thing: in Lou's office, for those of you who don't know, the pix of him on the wall in his football uniform is really him! What a hottie, eh? :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the (hee hee) all-time classic (heh heh) episodes
This is an episode about (hee hee) a horrible tragedy. Chuckles the Clown is in a parade, dressed as a (titter) peanut. And then something dreadful (hah hah) happens. A rogue elephant (snort) tries to shell him.

The people of the newsroom try to deal with the death in predicted ways. (heh heh) Lou and Murray can't help laughing; Ted is (snicker) bewildered; and Mary is simply horrified.

Then, the funeral comes, and the famous line "A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants." And Mary ... just ... can't ... help herself.

What makes this episode so memorable? Because we all know what that's like. We've all had a hard time controlling laughter during serious and/or embarrassing situations.

One warning: Your memories of the funeral scene with (heh heh) sneak up at the most inopportune (chuckle) times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs Complete Season DVD Boxsets!
The Bob Newhart Show is one of my favorite classic shows and I remember watching this show when I was a kid and I also watched reruns on Nick at Nite and TV Land but they are always either changing the schedule or not showing it at all for long periods of time. I really want this show to be released in complete season DVD boxsets and can't believe they haven't done it already. The tape is fine and has good episodes but they would be better on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars includes Episode 81 : Who is Mr. X?
includes epsiode 81 : Who is Mr. X? Bob accepts a seemingly innocent invitation to appear as the guest on a TV discussion program. He winds up in the jaws of a dilemma when the show host turns out to have the disposition of a shark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Newhart never tires out!!
Once again,Bob shows that his character lives on forever. Makes you want to have a friend like him in real life. All the episodes are great. I have seen them all too.The ceiling hits Bob is very good. Jerry,Howard and Carol, are excellent support for Bob. Not to mention his patient like Mr. Carlin. It would be nice to have a peeper series. Bobs old school friend. That would be awesome. I would buy that in a minute. Tom Poston is brillant in that too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary and Some of Her Disasterous Parties!
The Mary Tyler Moore Show is one of the best classic sitcoms from the 70s and some of the best episodes are the episodes that featured the running gag of Mary's disasterous parties and this tape has some great ones inluding the episode where Mary throws a dinner party for a congresswoman who was interviewed on one of her news programs and then winds up not having enough food for everyone when she winds up with uninvited guests and the one where Ted and Georgette come over for dinner and Georgette goes into labor but it's a shame that they didn't include the episode where Mary tried to throw a surprise birthday party for Lou not knowing that he hates surprise birthday parties and the one where the lights go out during a party in Mary's new apartment during a party where the congresswoman was bringing Johnny Carson as a guest and everyone reminiscences about all of Mary's past disasterous parties. I now have the first season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show on DVD and I'm looking forward to the rest of the seasons coming out on DVD and it would be so nice to see all of the party episodes on DVD!`

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary's disastorous party's on video!
This show and tape will make you die laughing. It's hilarious, Mary Richards throws some pretty horrible party's. If you like The Mary Tyler Moore show you will love this video it's funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Four of Mary Richard's disastrous dinner parties on 2 tapes
One of the running gags on "The Mary Tyler Moore" show was that Mary's parties were always a disaster as the four episodes on these two tapes prove. "The Dinner Party" (Episode #82, November 17, 1973), written by Ed Weinberger, finds Mary stunned when a congresswoman (Irene Tedrow) accepts her rhetorical invitation to a dinner party. Henry Winkler plays one of the guests. In "Mary's Aunt" (Episode #126, October 18, 1975), my favorite of this quarter, written by David Lloyd, Mary's Aunt Flo (Eileen Heckart), a world-class foreign correspondent, drops in for a visit. The next thing Mary knows, Flo and Lou are engaged in a friendly little rivalry. "My Brother's Keeper" (Episode #65, January 13, 1973), written by Dick Clair and Jenna McMahon, finds Phyllis puzzled when her visiting brother seems more interested in Rhoda than Mary. Of course, it never occurs to her that her brother is gay. Actually, it did not occur to the writers until the original ending fizzled. Finally, in "Mary Midwife" (Episode #145, September 25, 1976), also written by David Lloyd, Georgette Baxter unexpectedly has her baby in Mary's apartment bringing to a close another one of Mary's unforgettable parties. Too bad they could not include the retrospective on her parties that ends with Johnny Carson shows up during a power failure. Oh, well. You cannot have everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi Guys
PARTY GIRL contains one of my favorite scenes from my all-time favorite sitcom: Lou taking 1/2 of Mary's party platter:

"Say. You know what? I'm not as hungry as I thought."

One episode that I would've put in place of the Aunt Flo episode was the party for Lou where he locked everyone out of Mary's apartment ("Aw come on Mr. Grant. Let Rhoda in--you like Rhoda"). Or maybe the party where the power went out just before the guest of honor arrived.

But the only real complaint I have about this VHS set is that it isn't enough. If MTM would package every episode on tape, I'd buy the whole thing in a second.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Box Set

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Mary and Rhoda Episodes!
The Mary Tyler Moore Show is one of my favorite shows from the 70's and one of my favorite sitcoms. I was 5 years old when it aired on television and grew up watching it. Mary and Rhoda are terrific characters and Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper really made their characters shine and this tape has some of the best Mary and Rhoda moments. I now have the complete first season on DVD and I highly recommend it and I'm waiting for the rest of the seasons to come out on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary and Rhoda in the Pilot Episode of MTM and more
This collection of five episodes from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" not only features five episodes focusing on Mary Richards and Rhoda Morgenstern, but it also worth having because it has the pilot episode of this classic sitcom. "Love Is All Around" (Episode #1, September 19, 1970), finds Mary getting a fresh start in Minneapolis when she ditches her fiance, moves into a new apartment and takes a job as associate producer of the WJM news show. Mary's interview with Lou Grant is the high point, while the sub-plot has Rhoda insisting Mary has moved into HER apartment. The pilot episode was written by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns. "Is a Friend in Need" (Episode #36, December 4, 1971), finds Rhoda has lost her job dressing windows at the department store in this episode written by Susan Silver. Mary wants to help Rhoda find a new job, however, when it looks like her friend might find one at WJM, she goes out of her way to stop that from happening. "Some of My Best Friends Are Rhoda" (Episode #47, February 26, 1972) finds Mary forming a relationship with Joanne (Mary Frann), a woman she meets in a minor traffic accident. Rhoda is caught in the middle until Mary discovers Joanne is prejudiced. This is certainly an atypical episode of MTM, written by Steve Pritzker, which deals explicitly with Rhoda's Jewishness and Mary's liberalism. In "Rhoda Morgenstern: Minneapolis to New York" (Episode #62, December 16, 1972), written by Treva Silverman, Rhoda has decided to move back to New York City but has second thoughts during her farewell party with all her friends. This is the episode that introduced Georgette Franklin as Georgia Engel, the future Mrs. Ted Baxter. Finally, "Best of Enemies" (Episode #91, January 26, 1974), written by Marilyn Suzanne Miller and Monica Magowan Johnson, deals with the near end of this famous friendship when Rhoda tells the WJM staff that Mary lied about finishing college on her job application. She had spunk, huh? An interesting collection, but how could they leave out "Rhoda the Beautiful" where she competes in the beauty contest sponsored by her store? Or "Enter Rhoda's Parents"? Five episodes is just not enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN
The MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW was brilliantly written and acted and this video is a MUST for anyone who appreciates the timing and chemistry between these two great performers! I thought Valerie Harper was sensational as Rhoda (talk about personality PLUS!) and she and Mary (who was reticent in comparison) contrasted very nicely and their many classic scenes together are timelessly hilarious!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Pair
This video of FOUR episodes of "Mary Tyler Moore" will give you infinate pleasure. It is very modestly priced, and contains the best episodes that feature Mary and Rhoda. You will also be VERY surprised at how this show and others are MUCH MUCH better when purchased pre-recorded. Nothing against Nick at Nite, but they cut EVERY episode, often removing ENTIRE scenes, like several in this set. AND they put the entire edited show through a time compression machine, which makes Mary often sound like Minnie Mouse! You will be surprised at how the show has it's original "feel" back, The complete theme song, remastered, and the full, unedited episodes. If you want to build a first-class collection of this show, THIS video is the one to start with! It will only make you hunger for more! Truly memorable characters, outstanding writing and directing, and it STILL holds the record for the most EMMYs for ANY single show. 22 of them! ... Read more

An original Neil Simon screenplay makes Seems Like Old Times rise above what would otherwise be a forgettable comedy love triangle. Goldie Hawn (Private Benjamin) plays a good-hearted defense lawyer married to Ira, a politically ambitious district attorney played by Charles Grodin (Midnight Run). The craziness of their everyday lives becomes even more ridiculous when ex-husband Chevy Chase is framed for a bank robbery and seeks refuge with the woman he could never get over. Hawn hides the love of her life under her husband's nose as Chase tries to clear his name. Hawn tries to protect him and Grodin just tries to keep from going insane. A slapstick romance that's very often hit-and-miss, the dialogue saves this comic farce and provides wonderful moments between the three stars. Seems Like Old Times also has going for it winning supporting players and some half a dozen drooling, unruly dogs. --Robert Lane ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Charming But I Think Foul Play Should Be on DVD Too!
Seems Like Old Times is a cute movie, it's quite funny and stars Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn from Foul Play. It is a modern screwball comedy about a man played by Chevy Chase who gets mixed up in a robbery and tries to get his ex wife played by Goldie Hawn who is a lawyer to help him and he winds up hiding in her and her stuffy new husband's (Charles Grodin) house. Besides Chase, Hawn and Groden, I also liked Yvonne Wilder, the actress who played the housekeeper, she was great! I'm happy this is available on DVD and I will be buying it but I wonder why this is available on DVD and Foul Play isn't. Foul Play was their first movie together and was an even bigger hit in the box office, but anyway I highly recommend the very charming Seems Like Old Times and hope that the even more charming Foul Play becomes available on DVD Too!

5-0 out of 5 stars If these are old times, more of them please!
Seems Like Old Time is still one of my all time favorite films. This film is almost too funny for its own good. A terrific throwback to the sophisticated comedies of the 30's and 40's updated for the 80's. It's too bad that they just don't make these kinds of comedies anymore. Goldie is in top form, Charles Grodin is so dry and wonderful and Chevy Chase should've never moved beyond this type of film. He and Hawn made magic before in Foul Play and it was great to see them together again. Buy it! Oh and keep any eye out for Aurora, the Parks' housekeeper and her infamous Chicken Pepperoni, no one can get enough of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic!
C'mon you gotta love 'em! Chevy and Goldie in their heyday. (The only thing that has always bothered me about this movie is the obviously fake cow at the end!) Neil Simon rocks!

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic Hawn-Chase comedy flick...
Goldie Hawn & Chevy Chase who previously were together in "Foul Play" reunite again in this classic Neil Simon movie "Seems Like Old Times". Chase gets mixed up in a robbery gone wrong and hes no longer wanted by his allegged accompliances and is dumped along side a highway while the car is in motion. Anyway Chase hides out and seeks the help of who else, his ex played by Goldie Hawn. But wait! Hawn is happily married to Charles Grodin who happens to pratice law cause Chase is wanted by the law. A lot of complications arise and Chase who is innocent needs Hawn's help very bad to clear his name.

3-0 out of 5 stars You're gonna get "mono"...
Wow, what is up with the sound not being remastered? Thats a given these days. The soundtrack sounds as though it was recorded in a bathroom... of a bunker... one mile below sea level... with my old radioshaq tapedeck. Ok, maybe it ain't that bad, but it does have a very "small" sound. Aside from that, the picture transfer is quite good. As for the movie itself, my memory of it was kinder. The movie is in high-gear as long as Chevy is on screen, take him out and what you are left with are a lot of wisecracks that could have used laughtracks, then someone would at least be laughing. Let me conclude this by saying, the soundtrack itself stands up well for a 1980 movie but the technology of the time hinders it greatly. ... Read more

One of the most beloved American comedies comes to sparkling life in this fast-paced, stylish production starring Tony Award-winning Broadway favorite Nathan Lane (The Producers) and Jean Smart ("Designing Women")! While dining at the midwestern home of the prominent Stanley family, noted critic and social celebrity Sheridan Whiteside slips on their doorstep and injures his hip, leaving the city slicker confined to the house for an outrageous six week recovery period which leads to cockroach farms, an octopus in the cellar, a dinner party with ex-convicts, "The Penguin" and more madcap mayhem! Written by the classic comedy team of Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, this razor sharp farce remains pointed and side-splitting today. Pull up a few extra chairs and invite some guests for dinner and a show; the fun is about to begin! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sardonic Hummer At It¿s Best
I was one of the very few lucky people, who was able to first see this, when it aired on TV in 2000. You have no idea how thrilled I was when I saw it on DVD at a BORDERS a while a go.
Nathan Lane is the cynical tyrant radio host Sheridan Whiteside. Who has some of the most crudest and hysterical one liners I have ever herd in the world.
It's very obvious in the begging that he care for no one but him self. He badgers his hostesses family ' the Stanilys'. To the point were he doesn't allow them in their own kitchen and living room. Let a lone their own library.
Even his well beloved secretary Magi Cutler gets her own problems with him. When she falls in love, with a relatively young, and handsome news paper reporter named Bert Jefferson.
The main cast is also sounded with a wonderfully colorful supporting cast as well. Whiteside and Magi's well meaning friend actor and singer Beverly Carrolton comes for a short Christmas visit.
Though he is some what conceded. Beverly is charming with his own wit, with a relatively small scene for him self.
The true entertainment though is that of Whiteside's friend is Banjo. A rather comical maniac who also comes to see his friend. While he is "in a lot of pain". Whitesied foolishly invites Lorraine Sheldon a highly regard actress in the story. Who Whitesied tries to use with manipulation, so that he can keep Magi to himself.
However, like with a lot of things his plain backfires.
Truly a marvelous cast even though some what small. It is humor and straight through all around fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Come to Dinner!
This is my favorite play of all time and it's all because of this production/video. Nathan Lane is my absolute favorite actor ever and he is perfection in this show. The material is quick and comical but there are also great moments of heart. Every cast member embodies their part and one can tell that they are enjoying themselves in the act. Harriet Harris plays secretary, matching wits and glares with Lane's 'Sherry'. Jean Smart plays a Broadway actress who gives her best (and most frequent) performances in the bedroom; Byron Jennings is the arrogantly lovable Beverly Carlton; and Lewis Stadlen is Banjo- a wacky Hollywood director who at times during his performance channels Jimmy Durante-the movie counterpart. The narrations done by Natasha Richardson and Liam Niasson are ok to sit through once but during repeat watchings they can be skipped over. I have watched this many times over and I'm still laughing. Kauffman and Hart's words have found their true home with this ensemble!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Who Came To Dinner
I am so glad that The Man Who Came To Dinner was finally released on DVD. The entire cast was great especially Jean Smart as Lorraine Sheldon.

4-0 out of 5 stars A stage classic that holds up
Very enjoyable staging of Kaufman and Hart play. Nathan Lane and Jean Smart, as you would expect, squeeze every possible laugh from their lines. They're wonderful.

One caveat: The play is filled with quick references to personalities of the period (the 1930s), and most of that might go right over some people's heads. But much of the comedy is timeless, so everyone is bound to enjoy it in the end.

There is more to this DVD than a previous reviewer would have you believe, but only a bit more. In the intermissions, there are some descriptions of the characters and whom they are based on. And there is an enjoyable segment with Kaufman's daughter and Hart's wife (the eternally graceful and charming Kitty Carlisle). The banter between Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson in these segments is weak, however. Essentially you're getting exactly the same thing you would have seen when this was broadcast.

We're fortunate to have had this performance captured on film, and I hope there will be more of the same. ... Read more

"Diamonds, daisies, snowflakes... sable, popcorn, white wine... is that girl," describes the opening theme music of TV's That Girl about the independent Ann Marie, a young actress trying to make it on her own in New York City in the late 1960s. Before Mary Richards "made it after all" in Minneapolis, Marlo Thomas portrayed the feisty Ann, a seemingly feminist woman (by modern standards, her desire to please her father and her devotion to being the perfect girl for her boyfriend Donald seem less than liberated) who gets herself into scrapes and mishaps of the variety familiar to those who grew up on I Love Lucy as she attempts to become an actress.

The three episodes on "Auditions, Auditions, Auditions" deal, not surprisingly, with Ann's endeavors to get on the stage or screen. In the first, "Call of the Wild," Ann, for once, is upset to get a role:she wins the part of "Miss Creamy Girl" in a soap ad because of her lack of sex appeal (she's "like hot dogs, apple pie... the girl scout that stays a girl scout forever"). To spice up her act, she decides try out a striptease routine, only to have her father walk in on her. "Nobody Here but Us Chickens" has Ann going for new lows in the form of "Miss Chicken Big." She takes acting lessons from a chicken, performs a courtship dance in a hideous bright yellow chicken suit, and fends off advances from Chicken Big's big chicken, Major Culpepper (played with hick charm by Slim Pickens). Finally, in "The Snow Must Go On," Ann and Donald need to drop Ann's parents off at Kennedy airport and get Ann back into the city in time for an important Broadway audition. But an incoming blizzard threatens to strand all of them at the airport, and they must cope in the best way they can: Ann tries to audition over the phone, Donald works on a story, and Ann's father hoards sandwiches when the restaurant runs low on food. --Jenny Brown ... This nostalgic special captures some classic moments from one of the most beloved shows of the '70s--a zany parody of daytime drama that launched the careers of such celebrities as Katherine Helmond, Richard Mulligan, Robert Guillaume, and Billy Crystal. The special starts as Jessica Tate (Helmond) enters the afterlife. Through a combination of dogged persistence and her trademark ditzy wisdom, Jessica attempts to convince an especially harried angel (Maude's Bea Arthur) into giving her a second chance at life. After all, the story isn't done yet. No single retrospective could hope to explain all of the convoluted plot lines generated by the warring Tate and Campbell clans, and those unfamiliar with the show might be left a bit dizzy by Jessica's whirlwind history. In its time, the show mined a wide range of social issues for laughs, touching on everything from cult kidnappings to alien abductions, student-teacher affairs to interracial marriage, and gay parenting to terminal illnesses. Soap's knack for laughing at serious issues--and refusal to back away from "heavy" drama when called for--still makes for brilliantly relevant satire more than 20 years after the show first hit the airwaves. --Grant Balfour ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Just Snipits
I didn't enjoy the snipit version of this video. I would have rather seen whole episodes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Soap Soup
I loved SOAP and wanted to find some videos of episodes. Why are there never any reruns of this popular show?? It was not clear that this video was a "review" of Jessica's life (while talking to Bea from Golden Girls as the greeter in heaven). While it was good to see my old favorite characters again, I have never liked seeing brief snippets of scenes that were really good and leave you wanting to see the rest. What I had hoped for was a video with several actual episodes. The video seemed very short. Concidering the price, I expected it to be as long as a movie. As a "review of Jessica's life" and "SOAP Soup", it was good and worth watching. However, I will probably not buy the other "best of Soap" videos available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soap Suds
Soap was is a classic. Written by the Witt Thomas Harris team (who also wrote The Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Nurses and Benson to name but 4) this video contains Beatrice Arthur as a guardian at the gates of heaven, it really is funny!, I won't tell you what happens it this video, and what other clips are shown as it will spoil it. Buy it! it is well worth it! ... Read more

In this collection of the seminal 1960s sitcom, viewers are introducedto That Girl Ann Marie (Marlo Thomas), a freewheeling modern girl with a knack for attracting male attention. It's a showcase for the fashions and mores of the mod years--contemporary viewers might find some of the humor hasn't endured, but most will be charmed by Ann's optimism, her independence, and her wardrobe. The first episode in this collection of tangled romances, "Among My Souvenirs," has packrat Ann discovering mementos from an old flame, Freddy, among stacked boxes of keepsakes. Ann's "That Guy" Donald, gets jealous of her past...and it only gets worse after she arranges a meeting with divorcé Freddy to give him back a valuable heirloom. The next episode, "A Tenor's Loving Care," features a surprisingly fun performance by Carroll O'Connor (All in the Family's Archie Bunker) as a temperamental Italian tenor. Opera buff Ann finds herself scooping reporter Donald's story when she's offered an exclusive interview--but soon discovers the singing stud has more than music on his mind. Finally, "The Mating Game" has Ann appearing on a familiar TV game show to help Donald write a story. When she doesn't pick Donald as her bachelor of choice, he goes to surprising lengths to prevent a Latin lover from winning her affections. Ann's got no choice but to teach him the hard way that envy will get him nowhere. Love Boat doc Bernie Koppel has a supporting role as Donald's sympathetic coworker Jerry. --Grant Balfour ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Donald and Ann are friends we would like to have.
That Girl is fun to watch. She is beautiful and she is smart. The series is okay for children to watch too. Donald and Ann are friends we would have liked to have had. Buy the episodes now before they are gone.

5-0 out of 5 stars She is That Girl!
I just loved this video! It was my first time seeing this series since I only got TV Land in 2000. First of all, these videos were in marvelous condition, uncut and all! I never once encountered shaky video or bad sound. Hands off to Anchor Bay Entertainment!

The three episodes in this volume ("Among My Souvenirs", "A Tenor's Loving Care", & "The Mating Game") were all fabolous! And Marlo Thomas has that famous flip hair style....which made the female audience flip over the style! And in the second episode on this tape, we get to see the late Carroll O'Conner in a pre-Archie Bunker role, as an Italian tenor.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's alright!
I did like the video but not as much as the others, but it did offer some good episodes that I have not seen for a while so it was alright. ... Read more

Fans of That Girl have grown to love kicky, quirky actress AnnMarie (Marlo Thomas) and her reporter boyfriend, Donald (Ted Bessell), two young urbanites living the freewheeling modern life of the mid-1960s. Today, the show still holds its own as a showcase for the fashions and mores of the mod years. Contemporary viewers might find some of the jokes puzzling, but are bound to fall for Ann's optimism, her independence, and her sense of style. This collection features Ann turning on the charm--and working up scheme after scheme--to get ahead in show business. In "You Have to Know Someone To Be an Unknown," Ann goes to extremes to catch the eye of a PR-crazy Broadway exec. The next episode, "The Mailman Cometh," features Ann being discovered at Sardi's by a would-be bigtime agent--who arranges a memorable 24 hours of fame with celebrity comic Dick Shawn. (This episode features an appearance by Ruth Buzzi in her recurring role as Ann's wacky friend and confidant.) Finally, in "Just Spell the Name Right," a seedy publicist (familiar face Jesse White) triggers a maelstrom of romantic confusion when he plants a press item about an affair between Ann and married soap star Buddy Hobart (Robert Alda). Hobart's overbearing wife seizes on the opportunity to get better acquainted with Donald--and Ann's father (Lew Parker) doesn't know what to believe. --Grant Balfour ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ann is as darling as always
The acting bug bites Ann good and hard in these three episodes.

'You Have Got To Know Something To Be An Unknown' has Ann try and be wild and 'out there' to get an audition for a bigwig Broadway producer.

'The Mailman Cometh' has Ann going on a publicity date with comedian Dick Shawn,if only he knew about it, that is.....

'Just Spell The Name Right' has Ann caught up in Buddy Hobart's divorce suit. It would be fine, exept now Ann's father thinks he has a cheating hussie on his hands!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Show!
I highly enjoyed seeing this show again! The 3 episodes are really great! This video is highly recomended for That Girl fans. Please buy it! The show is so great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Marlo Thomas and That Girl Fans

This compilation introduces each of the twisted story lines of the 1970s-era soap opera spoof by beginning with Jessica Tate's wrongful conviction of the murder of Peter, her lover and step-nephew. In a jailhouse meeting, Jessica (Katherine Helmond) and brother-in-law Burt (Richard Mulligan) examine other possible suspects, a perfect excuse to roll tape. Viewers meet her daughter Corrine, also embroiled in an affair with tennis pro Peter, that is, until her chaste courtship with a priest interferes. They see Burt's stepsons Danny, burdened with a mob assignment to kill Burt; cross-dressing Jodie (Billy Crystal), saving up for a sex change operation until his football-playing boyfriend dumps him for a shot at heterosexuality; and Chuck and Bob, the inseparable ventriloquist and dummy team. Or how about Jessica's husband Chester, outraged at her betrayal despite his own mistress and girlfriend. The only nonsuspect is Mary--Jessica's sister, Burt's wife, and the moral center of the sitcom--who stands by Burt through his guilt-ridden impotence and descent into madness because he killed her first husband. But who killed Peter? That question is never answered in this 74-minute volume, which leaves Jessica still in her jail cell as credits roll. --Kimberly Heinrichs ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just Snipits
I was disappointed in the snipit version of this video. It recaps past episodes that involved the characters inolved with Peter but doesn't really capture the essence of any of the episodes. I guess I would have preferred to see a few episodes in their original form.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN UNCONVENTIONAL FAMILY BUT A LIVELY ONE
I can't say enough good things about this show or this 90 minute movie which is really a recap of everything that happened in the first season.

Jessica (katherine Helmond) and Burt (Richard Mulligan, God bless him!) are what made the sitcom what it was in addition to many others who went on to do great things after the show was canceled in 1981.

If you want a movie that has a lot more going for it than just your typical cookie cutter Father Knows Best clan. The Tates and The Campbells are for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is not enough good things I can say about "Soap"
One of the most controversial series' ever made, and on top of that one of the funniest. Despite the protest letters that accumulated over 20,000, ABC backed up the sitcom and still aired it. Shortly after the protests stopped, then the ratings took off. It has everything from homosexuality to ventriliguism (sp?). Starring Katherine Helmond, Richard Mulligan, Billy Crystal, Robert Guilliame, Ted Wass, Robert Mandan, and Cathryn Damon, to name a handful. The best characters were played by Mulligan (Burt), Helmond (Jessica), and Guilliame (Benson). Richard Mulligan, who is an underappreciated actor, gives the most comical and convincing performance, which he won an emmy for. Katherine Helmond deserved an emmy for playing a dimwit so well. From Jessica's court scenes to Burt's alien abduction to devil possession, this outrageous comedy delivers. Even is able to become dramatic sometimes. Quite possibly the best comedy ever! GRADE: A+

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO A GREAT SERIES!!
This tape, is a great way it be introduced to the wacky Tates and Campbells from Dunn's River, CT!!. Although packaged as THE BEST OF SOAP it is in fact a clip show that aired before the beginning of the second season. It was shown to catch viewers up on what had gone before in the previous first season. It shows Jessica Tate (played by Kathrine Helmond) in jail for a crime she did not commit and her brother-in-law Burt Campbell (played by Richard Mulligan) comparing notes trying to figure out who did kill Peter Campbell. The two review all the family members via clips from the past season. One word of warning: You don't find out who DID do it by the video's end. This was after all just a way to get you to watch the season opener the following week. There were 2 other retrspectives made during the series run. For somestrange reason the one for season 2 is not avaliable commercially while the one for season 3 is under the title of JESSICA'S WONDERFULL LIFE. ... Read more

In this collection from the era-defining show That Girl, boundlessly bouncy actress Ann Marie (Marlo Thomas) and her reporter boyfriend Donald (Ted Bessell), try their best to impress her suburban family with their très moderne approach to urban life. Mod style abounds as the cute couple tackles age-old problems. In "Leaving the Nest," Ann tries to prove her domestic talents to her parents (Lew Parker and Rosemary DeCamp)--and overbearing Aunt Harriet (Hazel Shermet)--by inviting them to her New York pad for a home-cooked meal. But disaster looms when a drastically depressed desperado (Jerry Van Dyke) turns up on the ledge outside her kitchen window. In "The Rivals," a weekend visit to the suburbs goes awry when Ping-Pong bitterness and a traffic accident escalate into a kangaroo court confrontation between Daddy and Donald, who both refuse to face the fact that they're simply jealous over Ann's affections. Things get even wilder in "It's So Nice to Have a Mouse Around the House." In this classic tale of man (and woman) vs. nature, a strange beast invades Ann's apartment and long-suffering Don is enlisted to take care of the problem. When an irate Daddy gets the wrong idea, could the law of the jungle lead to a shotgun wedding in Baltimore? Overall, some of the humor might not seem as fresh as it did in the 1960s, but the show's bright, independent style remains timelessly entertaining. --Grant Balfour ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable, emotional
I saw this movie when it came out on HBO 8 years ago, I really enjoyed it. Lemmon is great and Silverman is funny as the son that finds the shortcut to unknowingly undermine his father's plan to start up from scratch. At times you feel for Lemmon's character and the rest of the family but thank God for happy endings (minor spolier there). ... Read more
