Description

Live at Carnegie Hall, jazz greats pay tribute to Clint Eastwood, award-winning actor, director, and dedicated jazz lover who has distinctly integrated the musical genre into his films' scores throughout his 30-year career. "Misty," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," "Take Five," "Tightrope," "The Good the Bad and the Ugly," "Rawhide," and "'Round Midnight" are just a sampling of the sizzling musical selections. Musical performers include Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Flip Phillips, Charles McPherson, James Rivers, Slide Hampton, Hank Jones, Thelonious Monk Jr., the Kyle Eastwood Quartet among others. 100 minutes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD DVD
THESE ARE WONDERFUL JAZZ MUSICIANS. THE ONLY THING THAT KEEPS ME FROM RATING THIS 5 STARS IS THE CONSTANT INTERRUPTIONS OF FILM CLIPS FROM CLINT'S OLD MOVIES. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE LIKE THIS STUFF BUT WHEN I WATCH MUSIC I LIKE TO GET INTO IT AND I DON'T LIKE COMMENTARY AND FILM CLIPS. EVEN WITH THAT, IT'S STILL GREAT MUSIC. WITH ALL THE RAP MUSIC? NOWADAYS IT'S A JOY TO SEE SOMEONE THAT CAN ACTUALLY PLAY THEIR INSTRUMENTS. I HOPE THAT THIS ISN'T A LOST ART. THESE GUY'S PLAY AS WELL AT THE OLD JAZZ GREATS. THE SOUND IS REAL GOOD TOO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves a 10
This 1996 Carnegie Hall concert rates right up there with the best -- Billie Holliday, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis..... For me, watching James Carter and Joshua Redman together riff with the Carnegie Center Jazz Orch is worth the price of admission, but there is much, much more and a collection of great vocalists and instrumentalists having a good time and letting it all loose. If you haven't heard Kevin Mahogany or caught Jay McShann (in whose band Charlie Parker cut his teeth) here's your chance. And, if Lester Leaps In, with Redman, James Moody, Roy Hargrove, Charles McPherson, Flip Phillips, Carter and company doesn't leave you wanting to dance in the gilded aisles nothing ever will. Though some purists might object to the occasional cuts (rather brief and often witty) from Eastwood movies and the laid back comments of patron Clint himself (and his less laid back piano playing), I found it all rather well done and thoroughly enjoyable. The guy's paid his dues to this art form and he gets his just deserts here. Above all, fine sound, excellent photography and almost two hours of the best jazz you will find on film. A great intro to jazz across generations and its contemporary energy. Full stop. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not that good
This is more the opinions of the movie critics. They spend all this time talking with the movie critics and these people who are influential in the movie industry.
They should not have put that one lady critic in this because she hates his movies, especially his westerns, so that was out of place. She is totally anti-Eastwood, and she wrote these nasty reviews of his westerns when they came out!
Also, they didn't even show Two Mules for Sister Sara! They spent way too much time on Bird and Bridges of Madison County. In Bridges he's a wimpy reporter.
They did do an okay job of providing some rare stills of his early days in movies, though. One thing they said about Rawhide needs correcting. they said ' seven years of frustration'. that's not true! He loved Rawhide! It was only after the fourth year that he wanted to land other roles, but he always enjoyed that series, so that statement by itself is misleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars What an inspiring man Clint Eastwood is.
I have recently regained my interest in Clint after re-watching Unforgiven again. It really is such a perfect film. So I got a copy of OUT OF THE SHADOWS to learn more about him (as I found most of the biography books way too dry). The doco is well paced and informative. It covers most of his films in alot of detail. Its first half is dedicated to him as an actor and the second half's focus is on his directing. I enjoed this half the most, a new director like myself could learn alot from old Clint. He is a very gentle and quiet director, who lets his actors find their character without stepping in too much. He is very matter of fact and down to the point and he just loves films. Like when he was being directed by Segio Leone and Don Siegel, unlike most actors, he never left the set because there was way too much to learn from watching these great directors work.

This DVD is great not only as a source of information on such an inspiring man, but also as a wealth of tips on how to direct.

I only deduct one star because there is not enough interviews with the mystery man himself and because I wanted to see way more of him actually working on his films (instead of finished famous scenes from his films).

This man deserves way more acknowledgement from the Oscars. They should definantly give him an honarary life time acheivement award real soon. Because whether he's acting or directing, nobody in film, can say so much with so little words.

5-0 out of 5 stars a total compendium of clint eastwood
This is (for the clint, fans) a must have item,
and with all respect the man isn`t getting any younger so
make sure you by this piece and may the memories live forever.
