This is the best of the three movies about a boy and his killer whale. Beautifully photographed, it's worth watching just for the heavenly British Columbian scenery and underwater photography. It helps that the story is well thought out and more expertly executed than the first two films in this series. Jason James Richter, the little boy from the previousFree Willy flicks, is given a credible role as a research assistant trying to understand why whale populations are decreasing. His story parallels that of the son of an illegal whaler who knows his father is involved in criminal activity and is particularly disturbed by the moral ramifications. Unlike the pro-environment characters in other movies, the fishermen in this story are given a valid point of view, as they are facing very real economic hardships due to the overfishing of the oceans. This plot tangent is given equal footing with the friendship between the two key boys in the story. It all gets a little too corny, but overall this is recommended as a family picture.--Rochelle O'Gorman ... Read more

I found this Free Willy the worst out of the series, not because the movie was bad,it was good but there was some parts in this movie that peaple didnt like. The little kid kinda messed up the bond between Willy and Jesse. But this was still a great movie, what an ending this movie had,Willy becomes a daddy, shocking ending to a great series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Ending to a Great Series
Ok, this was a great movie, as all the Free Willy movies were, it is just unfortunate that they didn't know this would be the last. If they knew, I'm sure it would have been so much better. I loved the Free Willy series, and when I learned they lost their budget and there would be no more, I look at the ending of Free Willy 3 and think, "This great series is over for eternity, and the last lines were, "Well I think we should call him Max" ?". Truly unfortunate. Anyways, this flick is aimed at an older audience. There are unsuitable features in this one, unsuitable for young ones, but makes the older ones happy.

2-0 out of 5 stars They Replaced Jessie
I liked this movie but they replaced Jessie. They had This 10 year old kind of come in and try to be the hero. I mean what was so special about the first too movies is that Jessie was the only one Willy trusted and then they had this ten year old come in and all of the sudden he and Willy were special friends. They should have left it alone with that special friendship between Willy and Jessie.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Zealand story of two lost and lonely souls.
"Starlight Hotel" is a film set in New Zealand during the Depression. It's the story of a motherless teen, Kate (Greer Robson) who is left with unsympathetic relatives while her father goes off to hunt for work. After a confrontation at school, Kate impulsively runs away from home and decides to find her father.

Kate soon runs into a drifter named Patrick (Peter Phelps). Patrick is a fugitive, and he doesn't really need the extra baggage involved in accompanying Kate. At first, he resists their relationship, but he soon begins to feel responsibility and concern for her. A bond between the unlikely couple develops. It is Patrick who is most influenced by the relationship as Kate represents the sort of commitment he's run from in the past. Patrick is forced to come to terms with the issues of responsibility and caring for another human being even if it's not in his own best interest.

New Zealand doesn't exactly produce a great number of films (although the hugely successful Lord of the Rings was filmed there), so it is nice to see a film from this country. I had no idea that the Depression hit New Zealand, but it is abundantly clear that this was so. Kate and Patrick are almost invisible as drifters as they blend in with the other desperate people who haunt the shanty towns, shelters, and soup kitchens of New Zealand. Not a great deal happens in this film--it's the simple story of two people who meet by accident and form a socially unacceptable bond which cannot be severed--displacedhuman

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Dream....
This film from New Zealand is a heartrending story of friendship and love from director Sam Pillsbury starring Peter Phelps and Greer Robson, both of whom are truly magnificent. We don't realize how much we have come to care for these two souls in this quietly moving story until it is over, and we are left with a feeling in our hearts that stays with us a long time.

Patrick Dawson (Peter Phelps) is a young man who is running from the New Zealand law for assualt on a reposser, a man he worked for until one night when he takes all the possesions back to the families they came from. This leads to a scuffle in which his boss is put into a coma. We find this out in flashback and we also learn of his bitterness over WW1 and the "glory" he did not find in it. We also discover his dissilusionment that the girl he loved married someone else while he was away.

Kate (Greer Robson) is a sweet, lonely young teenage girl who has lost her mother and runs away to find her father, who has gone to Wellington to find work. She meets the older young man Patrick and from the moment they are mistaken for family we know that Patrick and Kate will travel together. Kate slowly grows on Patrick as a special bond is formed between the two dreamers.

That is what this film feels like, a dream. Pillsbury gives these characters time to develop their own personal history and with the beautiful New Zealand landscape as a backdrop their relationship grows ever closer. All the little details about both Patrick and Kate are given slowly over the course of their dangerous journey on the open road.

This movie is dreamlike and compelling. It is also romantic. Kate is only around thirteen, and as Patrick begins to care for her they fight and argue as an older brother and younger sister would. We know how much he cares for her when he loses her in a riot and misses his ship to Australia in a desperate search to find her, taking the risk of being caught.

Director Pillsbury brings about a special relationship between the young and luminous Robson and the young but weary Phelps. Both give terrific performances in this beautifully filmed story which unfolds slowly to reveal a richly rewarding film. Hollywood would have turned this movie into something quite different and it is to Pillsbury's credit that as the friendship of Kate and Patrick becomes something special he does not go any further, for it is not the proper time. This is a subtle film of nuance and character development. The scene where Patrick takes her to her mothers grave and takes flowers from another headstone to place there is all the more moving for it's quiet restraint.

I will not give away everything about this film but their paths are obviously leading them in different directions. This film has a touching ending (or is it a beginning?) when something special and dear to each of them is exchanged with the words "I'll want that back". This is a heartfelt story that will hold a special place in yours after seeing it. I recalled this film fondly recently and tracked down a copy from an Amazon seller as it is no longer available. I urge you to do the same. It is worth it. You will probably never see a film like this anywhere else. Check into the "Starlight Hotel" as Patrick calls it and enjoy this wonderful film for dreamers.......

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story for Dreamers
This is no action film but a quiet, thoughtful story about two people, with beautiful New Zealand scenery as a backdrop. I even found and bought the book it was based on ("The Dream Monger" -- I had to get it from New Zealand, it's out of print and absolutely no one else had it), in which Patrick actually teams up with a boy instead of a girl. The book was good, but the movie was definately improved by making Kate a girl.

I love the scenery, the slowly developing friendship, the sometimes embaressing and awkward moments, and the tenderness the war veteran finds himself showing. I could've done without some of the language but over all, liked this video very much and would recommend it to anyone with similar tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars this film change my life!!!!
I saw this film in Mexico City on December '94... almost seven years ago!!!! Since the first time a saw Starlight Hotel, my life change, i think it's not necesary to explain exactly how, but i found another way to see life. The friendship between Kate and Patrick, all the risks they face together and how they care each other, make this story unique. I really love this film, and in some way i would like to be part of the story... i would like to visit the locations in New Zealand, i would like to meet Greer Robson and Peter Phelps, and ask them what does this film mean for them. Sadly, i don't know anything about them in the last years. One thing i learn from this story, besides love and friendship, is the courage to reach all our dreams, no matter what we have to do!!! By the years, i'm sure of something, Starlight Hotel is my all time favorite film, i have no doubt about it. By the way, I have a VHS tape with this film translate to spanish, but it's to old and i have no idea of how i can get the original video of this film (so if somebody can help me, i'll thank you very much).

5-0 out of 5 stars Starlight Hotel
God bless Jen, for giving me this movie for Christmas. (She found it on eBay.) Starlight Hotel is magical. It is my "official" favorite movie. I have seen it countless times. The scenery... Patrick.... Kate... I melt into mush. Remember when he thought he lost her during the riot? Remember when she threw mud at him? Remember the "goodbye to my mate"? So many scenes to endear these two outcasts to your inner-dreamer. What are you waitng for! Find this movie and enrich your soul! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie
First of all,I think the other reviews are wrong, because this movie isnt just about "Kirsten Dunst", its deals with her whole family in the movie. It's a great movie about a girl who is 15 and she gets pregnant by a boy who leaves her and she ends up going to a school for young pregnant girls, and then she has it all on her own without her boyfriend. It's a great movie but its only for Mothers and girl teens, because they can learn from the movie if a mothers young daughter ever gets pregnant early. yes, Kirsten does give a great performance but its not just about her,the mother in the movie goes through a lot too. Great movie for a mother daughter to sit down and watch together!!

4-0 out of 5 stars SAD
Many girls around the country each year find themselves in these horrid positions. Kirsten Dunst did a superb job as Tina in this shockingly realistic film. I felt sorry for her as she had to put her young life on hold-- but then I didn't because she was like any fifteen-year-old girl: naive, vulnerable and harmfully impressionable. Any girl should watch this movie before giving herself away to any carnal, uncaring, hormonally imbalanced boy.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Stop Here!
Actually, I enjoyed the movie, and I loved Kirsten Dunst in it. I didn't think it was a low-budget film at all. I thought it was well-done and simple enough for anyone to follow. The message to teenage mothers is quite clear, and I think that should be the main focus of the film. It just seem all too common when young females get pregnant they expect their boyfriends (or potential husbands) to stick by them, and the girls believe everything the guy tells them. Being a single mother of 2, I already know the game. It is always mama's baby, daddy's mabye.

I just wish that society would put less emphasis on concealing the truth about sex, which is advertised everywhere, and put more emphasis on telling the truth about it along with other things. Sex education in the school system would be a great start, but parents shouldn't leave everything up to the teachers either. I find a lot of parents are against sex education because they feel that it would encourage their children to "do it." We can't always watch over our kids and/or make decisions for them. Parents can only guide their children. How can we get our children to make the right decision if we don't educate them about the things that they will encounter such as sex, drugs, and other harsh realities in the world. I don't think sex education would encourage children to engage in sexual behavior. I think that it would, if it ever came down to it, encourage our children to make wise decisions about sex. For example, condomn and birth control use. Or, even better, abstinance (sp?). I think that misinforming or not informing our children about sex leads to risky sexual behavoir.

Even though I didn't start having children until I was 20, I feel what the teenage mothers go through. It is hard enough being a single parent, but I think single teenage parents have it the hardest. Some of them can't obtain financial means because they are too young to work. The teenage mothers who are of legal age that can find employment often work at low-paying jobs with very little opportunities for advancement. It is not just teenage mothers who have a hard time. It is also single mothers from across all socioeconomical and ethical backgrounds. In today's world, it is so hard to find a decent job without the education and/or experience. I am glad that I am one of the lucky ones because I have my mother to help me. I am a senior in college now, and I am about to graduate. I can't say it is a common story. Sure, there are probably plenty of single mothers who went to college and graduated, but I run into so many single mothers that don't, and they want to complete their degree. I don't want to end up as a statistic, and I want to prove to others that it can be done. I also don't want my kids to follow in my footsteps, so I am going to educate them about sex and it's consequenses. I want to let them know that they do have a choice in the world, and I hope other parents do the same. We must educate our children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fan
I know its like an educational film to say no to sex for teenagers, but I really thought this movie was well done! Realistic and sad. Glad I watched it in health class. I didn't want to ever end up like Tina. She was just too young to go have a baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teen mothers to be
When I first saw this movie I was touched. I was also fifteen and pregnant. It helped me to understand how my life would be turned upside down and still turn out alright. I got to look at all points of view. How tina felt and how her mother had to struggle to try to keep her family togteher. I would recomend this movie to any body. Fahter or mother. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A sexy, strange, dark movie
If I had a list of erotic movies for women, this one would be on it. Nicolas Cage is at his usual weirded-out best in this one. A very strange, sexy, and unsettling movie. The New Orleans locales add to the dark mood. Some very erotic scenes in this as well. Not a very well-known movie, but one that would appeal to women, I think, more than men. The body-painting scene is one that sticks in my mind as one you will remember!

1-0 out of 5 stars TACKY SEX DRAMA...
Nicolas Cage was either broke (or whatever) when he made this New Orleans filmed trash. There's no other excuse. He plays a "tortured artist" flinging with the wife of a friend (Judge Reinhold). She is Zandalee (Erika Anderson). Zandalee---what a name. Zandalee loves to----and she likes it as often as possible. You see, she's a "free spirit" and her hubby's a bore. No stretch for Reinhold. But no matter who's naked or how often this is an awful movie. Not even worth the one star. It's so bad I watched it going "oh BROTHER". There is no acting in this movie. Just really bad dialogue spoken by the ones being paid to do so. Marisa Tomeii is somewhere in this mess too. But who cares. It's all pointless. Directed by someone named Sam Pillsbury.

4-0 out of 5 stars Erika Andersen makes this movie
She IS Zandalee, the sexy and sex-starved creature who propels this tragic story of lust and betrayal. Wow, this actress captivated me when I saw this in theatres eleven years ago. Beauty and talent and loads of sex appeal. Friends and I would debate whether she or Carre Otis (Wild Orchid) were the hottest babes on screen at the time.
Judge Reinhold is her mopey and inevitably cuckolded husband, Thierry. Zandalee yearns for a full and satisfying sex life with Thierry but he is too wrapped up in his own repression to appreciate the glorious gift that is (literally) dancing naked right in front of him.
On the scene comes Johnny (Nicolas Cage), a sleazy old friend of Thierry's who takes full advantage of Zandalee's sexual frustration. She is at first standoffish and untrusting, but caves in to her compelling need and allows Johnny to seduce her and ravish her in the most inappropriate places (like on the freezer in the pantry while Thierry and another dinner guest are chatting in the dining room). The sex with paint scenes are also good, an idea later copied (and abused) by the movie Luscious. I was torn between loathing the treacherous Johnny and eagerly anticipating his next liaison with the beautiful Zandalee.
The French Quarter location and Bayou scenes give great flavor to this movie. Also the assortment of character players whom I can now look back at and say, "Oh, that was him or her!"
Someone else mentioned the great Cajun-sounding score by Pray for Rain, which truly did enhance the exotic mood in the movie. A pity it was never released as a soundtrack.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Not the best . . .but . . .
For those of us who cherish the steamy city of New Orleans, Zandalee captures the steaminess while transcending its shortcomings.

Rehinhold could have made more of an effort to exhibit a more tragic figure - and could have made an attempt at maintaining
ANY accent. Cage is satan personified. More than a bit melodramatic in many scenes, good cameo appearances by Marissa Tomei, Joe Pantoliano (pricesless cross-dresser!) and Steve Buscemi (playing Steve Buscemi) add to the memorable scenes and memorable/quotable dialogue: ("I'm your reality check" "Its a heartifact" "A little decorum!".

Its worth the 3 bucks to rent of the $ to buy it. Nice steamy, sexy movie. Not the greatest . . . but . . .

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best ever . . . but
The score by "Pray for Rain" (not available ANYWHERE) is great.
For those of us who love New Orleans, this film captures the steaminess of that city and the romance of Zan and Cage. Steamy in all senses, this film somehow overcomes all its shortcomings with its quirky dialogue, and endearing appearances by Marisa Tomei, Steve Busciemi and Joe Pantoliano. Rheinhold could have managed to exhibit more "tragedy" in his situation - and his accent changed in evry other scene, but Cage's is that of satan himself. Worth the 3 bucks to rent or the $ +/- to purchase. Also full of memorable, repeatable wonderful one-line quotes! ("I'm your reality check" "Say my name" "Please! some decorum!") ... Read more

I mean what was so special about the first too movies is that Jessie was the only one Willy trusted and then they had this ten year old come in and all of the sudden he and Willy were special friends. They should have left it alone with that special friendship between Willy and Jessie.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars
Good movie, but not in widescreen format as advertised.

1-0 out of 5 stars ZERO STARZ!
This movie blew it. We thought the could make up in the next film, but nnnnnnooooooo! I don't want to tell you the plot because it hurts me. This film is not for kids. Killing whales, bar fights, and pranks is why 9/11 happened! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely horrible
I like a wide variety of Westerns from the classic Rio Bravo of Howard Hawks to Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, but Into the Badlands is so bad that I threw it away after watching it once. Slick packaging and quality stars entice you to buy the movie. However, multiple story lines have little to do with each other and even fine stars like Bruce Dern, Helen Hunt and Mariel Hemingway can't save this turkey. Dern's character Barston should have saved his bullets to use on the director and screenwriters. The only saving grace was that I was able to use the dustcover for another DVD I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different, but Enjoyable Western
Provocative to say the least. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and bought the DVD to always have it on hand. In this made for TV film, representing a compilation of three short stories, Bruce Dern was exceptional in his role as a bounty hunter. It depicts aspects of bounty hunting ranging from the thrill, to the harsh reality to even the comedic. Although many people did not like the style in which the film was cut, I found its unexpected twists and turns along with its overall mystique very entertaining. The music is very compelling and ties the film together nicely. If you like "high pride" Westerns, this is a must see.

4-0 out of 5 stars I've seen a lot of weird movies...
and this one ranks right up there. The back of the tape describes it as a "surreal western" and that's about right. It includes many characters that die but not really, some unique hallucinations, and narrations that are either creepy or funny depending on your interpretation. My dad bought this one off of a discount rack for $6, thinking it was a normal western. It's really a horror movie, and a weird one at that. My favorite movies are the strange sick ones, so I liked it very much. If you have similar taste, you'll definitely like this one. To classify it as a Western is really ridiculous. It's a few short creepy stories tied in together by one common character, and the fact that it takes place in the old West seems almost incidental. "Normal" people probably wouldn't like this one, and when my parents saw it, they said they couldn't believe that Helen Hunt, Dylan McDermott, and Mariel Hemingway would ever be in it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory southern potboiler
I discovered this movie on the TV while channel surfing and was pleasantly surprised. I am a Kelly McGillis fan (ever since Witness) and I thought I'd give it a try. Billy Zane is also a good and yet underappreciated actor. He plays one of a trio of escapees from a prison farm in 1950s Louisiana. They seek refuge in the remote home of a middle-aged woman who has been living like a hermit since her father died.
The character Kelly plays is frumpy and eccentric. She has the opportunity to escape from the clutches of these bumbling escaped cons, but she is determined to stay at her house and work in her garden. Zane is the compassionate one of the three, and he prevents the bully in the bunch from molesting Kelly. In quite a funny scene, Kelly inflicts further injury on the whiney one of the bunch.
The cons lie low while the police search the vicinity, having to deal with a traveling preacher, Kelly's nosey sister who pops in from time to time, and the blind man who delivers her groceries. You know some characters are going to come to an untimely demise. Meanwhile, affections develop between Zane and McGillis. She started to look hot even in her frumpiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jail Break
This was a surprisingly interesting film set in the 60's about 3 escapees, one of whom is dangerous (Rollins), one of whom is lovable (Zane) and the other who is annoying (guy from "Roseanne").

It's one of those gems that was overlooked by critics, but can easily be enjoyed by romance and drama fans.

Loved it!

2-0 out of 5 stars I spent how much on this? Damn.
If you want to admire Henry Rollins' bare behind, watch this movie. Everything else is a waste of time. "Morgan's Ferry" is painfully slow and dry, leaving its otherwise talented cast deficient of an engaging plot, believable character relationships or interesting dialogue. The dragging story makes the viewer wish for an explosion, or anything, to make it stop, instead of lumping along into the uneventful end.
Also, it is pointless to watch the DVD version, there are virtually no special features; there aren't even chapters, just one long run.

5-0 out of 5 stars A touching story
"Morgan's Ferry" - a touching story well told and well filmed. I enjoyed the film thoroughly and am going to buy the DVD. If you liked Fried Green Tomatoes and films about the American South, you will love "Morgan's Ferry". Kelly McGillis and Billy Zane have given good performances. When I've purchased the DVD, it's going to be in my collection of my all-time favorite movies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Dull
Slow boiler about a group of prison escapees who are stranded at a depressed single woman's home has little to offer and takes way to long to do that. ... Read more
