5-0 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE MOVIE!
I must say Sparkle is my favorite movie. I've seen it probably hundreds of times since the 70's. Lonette McKee and Irene Cara were great in this movie. Making it big in the "Music Business" was their dream until Sister (Lonette McKee) let something over power her dreams. Fortunately, Sparkle (Irene Cara) was able to succeed with the help and encouragement of her boyfriend Stix (Philip Michael Thomas). This is definitely an African-American Classic. I hear there's going to be a remake of this film soon. It may be good, but it will never come close to the original.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Sparkle" SPARKLES!
I saw this film in the movies as a teenager and I've never forgotten how it made me laugh, cry and sing. It's the story of the fictional struggles of three sisters who are trying to make it in the music business, but each of them encounter individual problems. There are fine performances in this movie. Irene Cara (who plays "Sparkle"), Lonette McKee, and Dorian Harewood are particular standouts. Look for future "Miami Vice" star, Philip Michael Thomas, as Sparkle's enterprising boyfriend. It has been compared to Broadway's "Dreamgirls" and the Supremes' story, but it has its own strengths, plus a slammin' soundtrack, written and produced by the late, great Curtis Mayfield, and sung by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. "Something He Can Feel" is STILL the jam. I gave it four stars because the ending was predictable, but all around this is a wonderful film. Highly recommended.

I Really Loved This Movie, I Must Have Watched It About Fifty Times, And Everytime It Makes Me Want To See It Again. Please Can Somebody Put This Movie On DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Sparkle" is a hidden classic
The movie "Sparkle" is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love this movie and think that this movie is something that everyone should see at least once. Although I watch this movie all the time, I love the singing, acting and just overall concept of the movie. I reccommand this movie to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST Movie hidden!!!
Sparkle is a classic and excellent cast and directed film. This movie is hidden from getting the attention that is deserves. The story and acting is superb! It's a classic movie in the class with "The Imitation of Life" (but a different type of story here). I STRONGLY recommend this film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie, one of Ms. Stapleton finest roles
I just saw this movie last night for the first time and I absolutely loved it. I bought the DVD because it seemed like a very good movie with a terrific cast and I couldn't agree more. Maureen Stapleton is excellent in this film and she plays Bea Asher, the recently widowed wife with great warmth and sincerity. She even sings in this movie and she does it very well I think. She is also a wonderful dancer who makes ballroom dancing very interesting to watch and learn. Charles Durning is also great in this fantastic movie and they both have great chemistry together. QUEEN OF THE STARDUST BALLROOM, is a magical film and the acting of both Stapleton and Durning is superb. I couldn't help feeling a little sad in the end (I won't tell you so I won't spoil the movie for you). However this is a wonderful movie and it shows that you're never too old to fall in love and follow your heart. They certainly don't make movies like this anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful love story
I loved this movie. I was able to relate to Bea and what she was going through and dancing is so much fun. She is a very strong woman even though her children think she isn't able to run her own life. Children have a lot to learn when it comes to their widow mother. And it is a wonderful movie. Jean Stapleton is wonderful in it. After her husband has been gone for over a year
she desided to stop being a plain looking woman & colors her gray hair and starts to wear makeup which she never did before.
And Charles During was wonderful as her dance partner & friend. Very enjoyable movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Al teaches Bea to dance at the Stardust Ballroom
A lovely story about rediscovering love. Bea Asher (Maureen Stapleton) is suddenly widowed and finds her comfortablelife shattered. She thinks that the only thing that lies ahead of her is a future of living alone. Then she Al Green (Charles Durning), a mailman, who introduces her to the Stardust Ballroom. It is a marvelous understatement to say that Al teaches Bea how to dance. "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom" offers an exceptional script by John Kass while Stapleton and Durning have never been finer in this 1975 film directed by Sam O'Steen. Even if the songs are too old for your taste and you could never seen yourself ballroom dancing, you will certainly respond to the emotions at play in this sentimental tear-jerker.

3-0 out of 5 stars Queen of the stardust ballroom
Underated sleeper. For the middleaged and family. Charming and heartwarming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice film to see in family
I bought this film thinking it would be a concert of the rock band queen, of course it wasn't. When I saw it I got very into the story. It is a very intriguing film to enjoy with all the family, buy it you wont regret it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Movie!
I remember watching this movie when it aired on TV when I was 15 or 16 years old and I think it was one of the first made for television movies that was ever made about anorexia and it was a good movie and I think Jennifer Jason Leigh was very good. Not a movie I want to own on video or DVD but a movie that was worth watching!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Best Little Girl In The World"
I didn't see the movie but I read the book of the best little girl in the world, and I found it to be fantastic. The detail that the author gives is wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Anorexics Beware
An eating disordered person myself, I was shown this movie during my stay on an Eating Disorders Unit. The particular case of anorexia portrayed in the film is not overly representative of the disease. The film was not at all enlightening and only had a negative effect. The actress, whom I assume must have starved herself to play the role, sent all of us into a frenzied desire to be as skinny as she is.

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is good
Whether or not you have read the book by Steven Levenkron, you will enjoy this movie. It takes you through a textbook case of Anorexia Nervosa. Casey is the overacheiver. She is the one the family overlooks. She is completely enmeshed with her mother. This is an older movie, so the sound and effects could be better, but the story is told very well and the acting is convincing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work, shotty product...
This film is wonderful, as it moves beyond the book and towards a more general and mass-informative genre regarding eating disorders. I first rented this video from the original producer, FOX, and the quality was so much better. The tape was in SP, and excellent quality. This company, however, charges a market price, 5.99 for a poorly reproduced "dub" in EP format, with glitching, and a "bootleg" presentation. Do not waste your money! There are reruns of it on television, and always the prospect that FOX will re-release it. This video will not last very long, so you may find yourselves purchasing it again, in its poor form. BUYER BEWARE. ... Read more
