5-0 out of 5 stars FUNimation's Best
FUNimation is actually taking on anime titles outside of Dragonball Z. And they did a great job in terms of content.

Meet Yugi. In the year 2009, he was frozen until a cure for his illness can be found. Yugi, however, is woken up a little early. He awakes in the year 2031. The Earth is now plagued with huge biological bugs, called Blues. The moon has been colonized and named Second Earth. For some reason, Yugi is to be transported to the moon. He is escorted around by Marlene, an emotionless soldier, and Joey, a mech pilot. Yugi examines how violent and hoorible the world has become. He's in for a wild ride.

Story Type: Mecha
Content: A
Animation: A
Music: A+ (hard rock and piano)
Japanese Dialogue: A
Dub Dialogue: B+
Subtitles: B-

Characters
Yugi: Freaked out guy who awakens in the horror filled world of 2031.
Marlene: Emotionless soldier girl who Yugi is abssesed with. Pilots the commando mech.
Joey: Movement pilot of the two person mech.
Kieth: Moves arms on two person mech.
Malcom: Jeep driver.
Takashi: Yugi's friend from 2009.

FUNimation pulled no stops with this DVD. We get Bios on the characters and dub actors, textless opening and closings, audio commentary on first episode, Original Japanese Teaser Commercial and a short rough sketch video. And the menus are fast and look very stylish. Title menu features Yugi, scene selection features the two person mech, Setup features Yugi freaking out after remembering his friend and extras menu features Yugi in the two person mech battling a Blue.

Overall, the dubbing is above average, the story is great, the animation rocks and the music is extreme. Highly recommended to all anime lovers.

NOTE: Unlike DBZ, this title contain extreme violence and brief nudity in the closing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Gender is Packed Full of Greatness
I must say that I really enjoyed this DVD. The story starts with a basic aliens-take-over-the-world style plot. But even the first three episodes show that this anime isn't as cliche as it first appears. First off the mechs look like they might be buildable, which is more than can be said for Gundam in any of it's incarnations (not putting Gundam down in any way, it is just that their mechs do complex movements that don't seem possible when the cockpit is seen). Then there is the blue themselves (those aforementioned aliens invading the earth). They also seem somewhat believable because they are so similar to insects that can be seen in real life, only much bigger and meaner.

The base personalities of the different characters are laid out in these episodes. It is hard to tell just from these, but they seem like they are going to turn out to be more complex then they first appear. The voice acting is great. All of the main characters are voiced by people who have worked on DBZ, but that isn't a bad thing. They seem to have been given more natural roles in this show because they are much more convincing. The animation is also great. I haven't noticed any looping or re-using of animation yet, a thing that plagues some other shows. It is also creatively violent. There are bug bits and broken people in most of the major scenes. Think Starship Troopers style violence and you'll get a good idea of what I'm getting at.

The DVD itself is great as well. The layout doesn't go out of the way to be annoying or confusing. This means straight forward and easy to use menus that are still worth looking at. The extras are also good. There is the standard assortment of trailers. There are also character bios that show who does the voice acting and what else they have worked on (a feature that I personally loved, it humanizes the voice actors). The rough sketch gallery is cool to look at because it gives the average person a small look into the planning that has to go into any animation. There is also a first for me: an audio commentary. It consists of the voice director and the two main voice actors discussing different, and usually interesting, things while the first episode plays in the background. Over all great extras for an anime.

Bottom Line: If you like sci-fi with good mechs, aliens that like to spew when they die, good animation, good dubbing, and a promising story line then get this DVD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Those crazy Japanese anime guys...
They have done it again. Not only do you get a gratingly annoying lead character who does nothing more than whine throughout this whole DVD, but you also have the (dis)pleasure of seeing giant alien bugs with especially sexual mouths that resemble the female nether-region. Try watching this one for more than two minutes without wanting to smack the TV and/or go watch some porn. Other than that, it can be pretty good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally hopeless and meaningless anime.
I enjoy good anime (InuYasha, Bebop, Gundam Wing, X, FMP, and many others) but Blue Gender lacks so much. The characters are somewhat lame and pointless and the plot is just really bad. Its like starship troopers gone anime with the creators having a concussion while doing the story. The animation is good but thats it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid scifi fare
If your basic Japanese anime were melded with "Starship Troopers," the result might be something like "Blue Gender." Better plotted than "Troopers," "Blue Gender" is an entertaining if uneven series, the first three episodes of which are here (along with extras such as audio commentary and character profiles).

Yuji Kaido is an ordinary kid from a few years in the future, living an ordinary life... until he's diagnosed with a strange, incurable virus. His only hope to to enter artificial hibernation until a cure is found. Theoretically, it wouldn't be long. But he wakes into a world gone wild, and is nearly devoured by monstrous insects the size of trucks. He's barely rescued by humans driving enormous robots, who were sent to bring him back.

Yuji discovers that twenty-two years have passed, and it is now 2031. While he was sleeping, the earth was overrun by these insects, called "Blues," which devour organic and inorganic alike and have reduced civilization to a pack of on-the-run soldiers. They were ordered to bring all the sleepers back to a space station where they all live, but a Blue attack kills all the sleepers except Yuji. Determined not to be babied by the present-day humans any longer, Yuji decides to fight for his life.

A pretty typical plot, and as a cartoon it sounds doomed. But despite the anime look of the characters, the action scenes, settings, and the Blues themselves are quite realistic-looking. One problem is that the action scenes themselves are a little repetitive, if well-done -- bloody, weird, full of violence and gnashing insects.

The Blues are one of the bonuses -- as they act like real insects, only thousands of times the size. Nor do they seem evil, just animalistic. Though alien invasion is nothing new, we're given a good means of finding out what is going on, by having a clueless hero. And time is taken to build up the sense of desolation, loneliness, and destruction that the Blue have brought to Earth, and how civilization has been wrecked by them.

Fuji will, without a doubt, irritate the heck out of viewers at first. When first rescued from the Blue, he whines, shrieks, freezes in danger, and generally acts irrationally - although given his circumstances you can't really blame him for going bonkers. There's certainly promise of improvement; he does grow on you with time. Marlene just comes across as cold at first, but gradually we see some softening. Most of the supporting characters are a lot harder to keep straight, especially since quite a few die.

While not particularly original, "Blue Gender" is a solid scifi story, with the king of darkness and violence usually found in major action movies. Though the characters are a bit hard to warm up to, it's overall an entertaining show. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, though violent...
After the Genocyber destroys Tokyo in part one, the project is moved to a battleship. The mysterious girl is taken in by the Ship's doctor. Then the Genocyber runs around destroying things again. All in all, that's about as much of the plot as I could gather. It's rather complicated, and confusing, but the animation's great, and the mecha is pretty unique. If i had to compare it with something, MD Geist is the first thing that pops into my mind. It is much weirder though and extremely violent. I would consider this excessive violence one of its only drawbacks. If you like weird, ultra-violent animes that include a lot of mass destruction- this is a video for you < I think it may be one of the best of it's kind>. If violence is not your thing, stay far away from this title. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality anime that should not be overlooked!
Genocyber has to be the most underrated anime in this century that went overlooked by so many in US. It contains solid deep story line, superb artwork, excellent musical score that blends in well with each and every scenes, complex plot, and the characters that you feel for. BE WARNED!! This is one of the most gruesomely violent anime with sexual innuendoes not suitable for kids!

Story is about two gifted sisters with incredible psychic powers. One sister (Elaine) has incredible psychic powers and the mind of a feral animal, while her other sister (Diane) is also psychically gifted, but with a crippled body which is only held together by experimental cybernetics...and cybernetics is what this movie is ALL about. Cybergeneticaly transmorphing into all powerful being, but the key ingredient is the psychic gifted sisters combined powers (literally), which is sought out by a evil scientist (the creator/the father) who is chasing the runaway rouge sister (Elaine) with his cybernetic ninjas who gruesomely murders their victims along the way, who in turn is also getting chased (more like followed) by a vengeful vigilante cop, while only one to be-friend and protect Elaine is a lonely, good hearted street kid who is chased and beaten up regularly by his older street gang members...and that's just the introduction. To some/few, the story is pretty complex where you might have to watch it twice to totally comprehend and absorb it all, but it is well worth it!

Genocyber is an anime series that starts with episode one "Birth of Genocyber" and ends in episode five (which in present moment I cannot recall the title). The anime series takes a wide left turn after the "Birth of Genocyber" with story and characters that doesn't relate to previous series, in which you scratch your head and wonder how a VERY good start turn oh-so bad?? We go from a very touching scene from "Birth of Genocyber" where Elaine and her kid friend is fatally wounded, but for his sake, she covers her wounds with her arms and smiles to him, to let him know that she's ok and not to worry about her anymore.. to a out of control Genocyber causing massive destruction with nonlinear storyline few hundred years later?? Boy.. it really makes you wonder. Nevertheless, I STRONGLY recommend Genocyber 1. It's one of the rarity combinations of violence, action with a drama that touch the human soul~

5-0 out of 5 stars EEEW!
This film is definitely not for the faint hearted, while the animation characters, mecha designs etc. are absolutely stunning, there is a huge amount of violence in this film, a lot of parts will have you cringe, it really is that bad. Aside from the horrible gore, the storyline is good while intensely confusing, and the action scenes are some of the best, definitely worth owning if you a fan of anime and manga (and have a strong stomach).

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a William Blake painting
I spend a good amount of time trying to get friends of mine with sort of funny ideas about anime to check a few films out. Akira doesn't do it; MD Geist doesn't do it; Vampire Hunter D doesn't do it (most of the time). Genocyber does and will. Please watch this movie. It's one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see. END ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MD Geist a decent Anime Movie
First, I laugh at the critics who say this great anime had little character development, senseless violence, bad dubbing and sound. M.D Geist is not that, is a fantastic , war anime in space, that's actually very realistic. Also I saw that the Uncut Japanese, English subtitled version, not the crappy dubbed version these idiots watched. lol

The plot, and it's a great one is the Geist is part of space soldier team. They have a great war against an enemy and Geist is one the few men still alive. His platoon though deserts him, and leaves him for dead.

If the plot sounds familiar, its exactly like "Soldier" with Kurt Russell in animated form.

Geists though, only on brawn and brains survives and destroys everything in his path. Well not everything, he does come to a city invaded by a bunch of deadly gangs (like in Fist of the North Star) and eventually he wipes them out too...

Geists platoon eventually find out that he's still alive and want to use him, check that abuse him.

Geist has other plans , and what results in a hour of the best hand drawn action anime you've seen.

The other critics don't know what they're talking about, so check it out.

I know great anime (Macross DYRL, Gundam Wing) and M.D. Geist is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maybe too short...little plot...well....
Anime is a very broad category. M.D. Geist enters in at the aciton category. Basically, the entire story is 50 minutes of fighting and bloodshed. It is overall a good movie, Geist is a very interesting character. The basic plot is very quick and is merely a prequel of things to come.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible.
If they call this an anime, I say: WHAT A SHAME! Not only is this movie too short, it's got bad voices for every single charicter, lousy animation (But that's just cause it's an 80's show), and does every voice need to ecco? If that's not bad enough, all the acting was more lousy than the animation. Plus the plot is not well develiped. Don't even rent this movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
Not bad...it's ok for what it is, a story about a generic loner guy who comes to the aid of the underdogs. Some cool mecha stuff at the end, but my main gripw with this movie is it's too short. i don't even think it's an hour long. Which means there's no development of Geist (who could be a very interesting character) or anything else. All this stuff just happens. The end was sort of confusing, a bunch of stuff just happens and you're like 'what?' but a lot of anime is like that. If you like Mad Max, this is a LOT like it. But a lot of other animes dealt with the perfect-fighter idea and its ramifications a lot more smoothly, like Armitage III and Ghost in the Shell. This isn't bad though, theres enough cool stuff to make it worthwhile. This is a great movie to just sit and not care about the story (there's not much of one) and just go "cool! he cut that guy's arms off!" Geist kicks major a$$ in the hour he's on your TV, so that's cool. He's just not very deep, at least from what i got out of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars It barely deserves anything
It's the worst anime I've ever seen. How did this get popular enough to be released here? Watch Ninja Scroll, Akira, A wind named Amnesia, Judge, Ghost in the shell, Macross Plus. This is garbage. ... Read more

This is garbage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Genocyber at it's best...
In the begining of this film, Genocyber has apparently wiped out civilization before being stoppped right before the 24th century. The real story starts at the beginning of the 25th century, with two new characters; Mel, a blind psychic girl, and Rin, her boyfriend. The pair are visiting the city of Ark De Grande, in an attempt to have Mel's eyesight restored. They eventually get into trouble with the law and are forced to go underground. Mel & Rin find that this place is anything but a shelter, it is home to a cult that worships the Genocyber as it's god and is waiting for it to return and cleanse the city. This movie follows the same pattern as the other videos in the series, with a bizarre plot and extreme violence. If you like movies like MD Geist, and enjoyed the other films in this series, then this one is a must-have. ...

If violence is not your thing, stay far away from this title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Gender just keeps getting better!
Blue Gender just keeps getting better with "Blue Gender, Volume # 3." Includes the episodes "Sympath", "Oasis", and "Confirm". The episode Sympath is great, Yuji and Marlene come across a new character named Dice (Finally! I thought they were going to be alone forever), a roughneck loner who remains alive due to the fact that he has an armored shrike (a bad one at that, it's alright I guess). Anyways, he helps Yuji and Marlene out throughout the entire DVD.
In the episode Oasis, Yuji gets separated from Marlene and Dice, and is picked up by some nomads and ends up falling in love with a girl named Elena. This episode isn't without its action scenes though, Yuji protects the nomads from a group of bandits. Great episode.
Lastly, in Confirm, Yuji is finally reunited with Marlene and Dice, and is forced with a decision - Go with Marlene to Second Earth, or stay with his new love, Elena. Decisions, decisions.
Overall this DVD is really more of a plot-evolver, but it's still a GREAT DVD which I highly recommend buying. The animation and dubs are better than ever. Anyone who thinks of this series as a poor one is obviously a moron, yes a moron. Buy it while you still can! It's Great! :) - Ryan ... ... Read more
