5-0 out of 5 stars timely
At a time when patriotism is more and more being defined as unqustioning support of administration policy, THE MALE ANIMAL offers a timely reminder of what Americanism truly is. I once heard a college president describe what education should be as "a window on the world, and a window is something you can look through from either side." This film provides a gentle reminder of the value of that insight. I still cheer at the end--every time I watch it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best films!
This a truly great film. I enjoy is immensly. It's funny romantic, and very moving at parts. Henry Fonda, is great as the English teacher husband and his wife, played by Olivia D'Havilland is so beautiful and charming. Jack Carson is funny and charming as well. He's a greta ctor. This is a must see movie, very decent, and one of a kind. I'd recommend it to anyone. It's one you can never get tire of it. Each time of viewing is like the first time. The plot and story is never dull and always makes sence.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Nostalgia
The innocence and straight forward holsom theme and action of this film make it one of my lifetime favorites. When something is bothering me, I like to play non-stressful movies and this is one of them. It'll be boring to thrill seekers, but that's the point isn't it?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Movie That Makes You Think And Laugh
The Male Animal is a movie that has you think about such serious issues as censorship and what it means to be a man, yet it doesn't sacrifice any laughs. Henry Fonda is perfectly cast as the professor who must learn whether he is man enough, and he is well supported by a beautiful Olivia deHavilland and a cast of good character actors. Not enough attention has been given to this movie over the years, and it deserves to be re-discovered. A great movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, old-time classic comedy, still relevant
This is the kind of socially-relevant James Thurber comedy Hollywood has all but forgotten how to make. Fonda and everyone are great, with a surprisingly nice job by Jack Carson. If you're a sports nut you won't care for the hilarious, all-too-true digs at college sports -- but the central theme of censorship still hits the mark, even if the movie is almost 60 years old. It's a dandy, lively story as well. And if you have an ounce of real American patriotism left (the more heartfelt kind, not the soppy apple-pie variety), you might even cheer at the end. ... Up in Arms not only introduced Danny Kaye to moviegoing audiences, but marked his first (of several) ventures with producer Samuel Goldwyn. In this 1944 musical set in contemporary time, a hypochondriac has wartime adventures while trying to impress a pretty nurse. With its lush cinematography in vibrant colors that still leap out, the film will nonetheless still have the politically correct police Up in Arms--the portrayals of the Japanese are stereotypical and cringingly embarrassing. Most notably forgettable is a scene in which Kaye's Danny Weems impersonates a Japanese officer and emerges a hero. But remember, the film was released at the height of war--and of American patriotism. Overall, Kaye's talent shines--he performs the lyrical work of wife Sylvia Fine, one of five contributors to the still catchy, still singable songs. And for those who remember Dinah Shore only from either her TV talk show or the popular golf tournament that bears her name, here's a revelation: she was a super talent. She sings, dances, and lights up the screen. Costars Virginia Merrill and Dana Andrews have the thankless roles of straight persons to the charismatic Kaye and Shore, who have a phenomenal dance number that'll leave you humming the tune long after initial viewing. Look for Kaye's subsequent frequent costar Virginia Mayo in a blink-and-you'll-miss-her Goldwyn Girl role. --N.F. Mendoza ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Remake of " Whoopee"
This film was Danny Kaye's first as a star for Goldwyn. Kaye plays Danny Weems, a hopeless hypochondriac who finds himself drafted into the army. While a passenger on an overseas transport ship, Danny is obliged to hide his girl friend Mary Morgan, who has accidentally stowed away on board, from the authorities. The plot (what there is of it) contrives to have Danny and Mary, together with Virginia playe dby the very talented Dinah Shore, who's in love with Danny, and Joe, who's in love with Mary, arrive simultaneously on the same South Sea island. After numerous comic and romantic complications, Danny emerges as the hero of the hour by capturing a whole bunch of Japanese soldiers. The film shows signs of post-production tampering-an offscreen narration, and abrupt ending-indicating. Despite its erratic editing and uneven scenario, Up in Arms contains some priceless moments, including Kaye's rapid-patter songs "The Lobby Number" and "Melody in 4F", both written by Sylvia Fine (Danny Kaye's wife) and Max Liebman. There are also a few cute "inside" jokes referring to the illogical nature of the plotline

5-0 out of 5 stars Up In Arms
If you love or loved Danny Kaye's zany face and body language, you will love the scene in which one of Danny's so-called buddies catches him using his record player ...I literally fell of the couch laughing and breathing heavy!

4-0 out of 5 stars DANNY KAYE'S TECHNICOLOR FILM DEBUT
Redheaded David Daniel Kaminsky became a well-known player along the "Borscht circuit" playing in the Catskills of upstate New York in the late thirties. Kaye later played in the successful Broadway show "Let's Face It" which co-starred Eve Arden and Vivian Vance in 1941. Goldwyn's faith in the 31 year-old Kaye was justified; the newly peroxided Kaye made his debut in this remake of Eddie Cantor's "Whoopee", and became a household name.Danny plays a confirmed hypocondriac who's so frightened of maladies that he's secured a job as the elevator operator in a medical building! The scene in the cinema lobby is brilliant and he's got the lovey Doris Dowling and the rather unphotogenic Dinah Shore around him while he wreaks havoc in this screwball comedy which made him an instant star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming movie
Up in Arms is very funny. It has all the wit and charm of the one and only original Danny Kaye.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Century's Greatest All-Around Entertainer
Now that the year 2000 is upon us, it's quite arguable that Danny Kaye is perhaps the greatest all-around commedian and entertainer to grace the stage and screen in this century.

While others could equal his performances in their own areas of specialty, Danny Kaye was a master of all of these specialties, singing, dancing, comic monologues, even romantic leads which were breathtakingly convincing and not forced.

He could dance nearly as well as Astaire, was the equal of Durante in comic dialogues, could sing as well as any of the best popular vocalists of the day, and could do impersonations and accents in a way unsurpassed by anyone on the stage.

He was as handsome as any leading man of the time and moved with incredible body grace. He was a joy to watch and Up in Arms was again, arguably, one of his best and funniest features.

If such a competition exists, I'd be proud to nominate Danny Kaye as the best all-around entertainer of the Century. Frank Pierce ... Read more

This feature (just over an hour) showcases the well-honed comic patter of George Burns and Gracie Allen during the busiest time in their movie career, the mid-1930s. Gracie's dingbat malapropisms were so perfectly straightforward ("I really shouldn't drink coffee in the morning; it keeps me awake all day"), and Burns's straight-man timing so unerring, the pair was often funnier than their material. Love in Bloom casts George and Gracie as carnival folk, in support of a sappy plot of young lovers in New York. The Burns and Allen chemistry was really at its best in their short films, radio, and TV, but their Paramount features are pleasing entertainment nonetheless. --Robert Horton ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good comedy
Unfortunately Gracie Allen and Bob Burns part is the sub plot of this story. The main story is good but I wish it had been switched. Dixie Lee (Mrs. Bing Crosby) has a nice voice and a good presence. It's a shame this is the only movie with her in print. She plays a girl who has dreams of stardom only they go nowhere. Luckily she meets a struggling songwriter and the two find work together at a music shop and love. But she feels bad about her vaudeville past and doesn't feel worthy to him. Gracie and Bob track her down, members of her past vaudeville act. There is a classic scene where Gracie gets out of a ticket.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Happy Little Musical
Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman star in this backstage musical comedy that delivers on all levels. Great songs, including the Academy Award winning song Zing, A Little Zong," beautifully delivered by the leads, and great sets and vintage 50's costumes too. The cast is none to shabby either...with Ethel Barrymore, and a very young Natalie Wood.

This is the kind of great musical that I wish they still made, but never will again. Thank God for Tape and DVD. I highly recommend this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snappy little musical that is just right for a rainy Monday

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour reunite in entertaining comedy
Bob Hope made many movies for Paramount during the 1940's when he was at the peak of his career. "My Favorite Brunette" is one of the best and is well written with some very funny comic situations. Hope is reunited with his co-star from the "Road" series - Dorothy Lamour - and they work well together. "Brunette" has an impressive supporting cast including Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr, John Hoyt, Ann Doran, Reginald Denny, Ray Teal, Jack la Rue, and features a couple of surprise star cameos.

Hope plays baby photographer Ronnie Jackson but his heart is set on becoming a private detective ("All my life I've wanted to be a hard boiled detective like Humphrey Bogart, or Dick Powell, or even Alan Ladd!"). Dorothy Lamour is Carlotta Montay and she mistakes Hope for Sam McCloud who is a qualified private detective and has the office next door to Hope. Lamour hires Hope to look for her missing uncle who has been kidnapped but after various misadventures she realises just how inexperienced he is! After being exposed to great danger and becoming a target for the villains Hope begins to regret his deception. ("I don't know how much more of this I can take - you've had me in hot water so long I feel like a tea bag").

Some favourite lines from the film:

Bob Hope (to Peter Lorre): "Nice cheerful place - what time do they bring the mummies out?".

Bob Hope: "It always looked so easy in those Tarzan pictures!".

Hope was best known for his series of "Road" comedies with Crosby and Lamour but in "Brunette" proved he could handle a leading role on his own. Around this time he also made "My Favorite Blonde" with Madeleine Carroll and "My Favorite Spy" with Hedy Lamarr but played different characters in each film. The Bob Hope films of the forties were popular light hearted entertainment and can be viewed with increasing pleasure over and over again. Clive Roberts.

5-0 out of 5 stars "My Favorite Brunette" with my favorite Bob Hope!
Baby photographer Ronnie Jackson (Bob Hope) would more than anything love to become a private eye. But while while taking calls for the detective agency next door, who should walk in but drop dead gorgeous Carlotta Montay (Dorothy Lamour). Mistaken for the destective himself, Ronnie cannot refuse helping out the lovely lady. It's not long before our favorite comedian, (who can't even handle a gun!), is caught up into dangerous plot with dangerous bad guys (Lon Chaney Jr. and Peter Lorre). Will Ronnie and Carlotta be able to sort everything out before they're 'silenced' forever?

I can't help but love the old screwbal comedies from the golden black&white age where movies were tons of fun. And with such an all-star cast, what could go wrong with this film? Nothing!

Bob Hope of course stands out in the movie with the most comedic power. He has such talent and seems to effortlessly pull off gags, give out hysterically funny one-liners, and make us laugh with his slapstick comic routines. Dorothy Lamour is a great actress but seems to be stuck in the sidelines under the light of Bob Hope. But that's ok because it's fun just to see her in fabulous costumes and pull Ronnie into the dangerous plot. But besides Bob Hope, Peter Lorre is the bad guy everyone can't help but love. It's great to see him give his innocent puppy dog face which he's so famous for!

Also, don't forget to check out Alan Ladd and Bing Crosby in their cameo appearances (Alan Ladd as the detective, Sam McCloud, and Bing Crosby as an attendant.)

My advice to you is that if you love Bob Hope, watch "My Favorite Brunette", which I've nicknamed, "Our Favorite Bob Hope"! Also check out these other Bob Hope classics; "My Favorite Spy", "The Lemon-Drop Kid", "The Ghostbreakers", and all the "Road To..." Series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Above Average Bob Hope Movie - LOUSY DVD!
This review refers to the Alpha (Gotham Distribution, as listed on Amazon) version of this movie on DVD. The print used for this DVD is absolutely horrible. The opening credits are barely readable, and the movie itself looks murky and has tons of scratches and dust. It's a shame that Alpha couldn't find a better print, but from some of the reviews I've read it seems that some other companies have had the same problem. It would be better not to release it at all than to use such a bad print. This is a really fun movie, and it deserves a lot better than this. Wait for a cleaner copy to surface - one will eventually.

1-0 out of 5 stars It sucks!
What is this? The whole idea with DVD sucks with this title! The picture and sound quality is worse than a heavily used standard 8 mm film!
The movie ...and of course Dorothy Lamour, is worth something better than this. Take it out of your stock and replace it with an appropriate copy.
No recommendations what so ever!

4-0 out of 5 stars A private eye that does not get the picture of the situation
A photographer turned private eye by accident and becoming involved in a very important plot to eliminate a couple of people in order to appropriate a uranium mine. Every single detail is hilarious, upside down, wrong. This poor photographer does everything the wrong way and misses all the details or fails all the possibilities, and yet he succeeds because of his great luck. Nothing much more can be said without reducing the fun of the film. So go and rush to it. Its worth a good laugh.

3-0 out of 5 stars ZANY SCREWBALL CORN.
This is a fairly entertaining musical farce which concerns a love triangle involving two pairs of siblings. Bob Hope and Jack Whiting are fellow officers in the Navy who meet Betty Grable and Martha Raye while on leave. Whiting falls for Grable, but Raye is smitten with Whiting, while Hope wants Raye and Whiting to get together so he can worm his way into Grable's good graces. Hope coaches Raye on how to get Whiting hooked, but nothing seems to happen until a photograph of Raye accidentally turns up in a "best legs" contest...Raye garners a lot of attention from the the picture and her loud, obvious yet entertaining personality finally wins over Whiting. The finale has Hope and Raye go down the aisle in a double wedding with Whiting and Grable. Raye is quite funny wearing a hardened facial mask which is hard to crack!

3-0 out of 5 stars Grable overshadowed by Raye's underpinnings!
Typical zany 30s comedy tailored to the talents of Bob Hope and Martha Raye. Martha plays a homebody who enters a cake-making competition, but inadvertendly a photograph of her legs is also sent with the cake! Guess what! Martha loses the baking prize but ends up winning the Most Beautiful Legs competition.

But it is nice to see Betty Grable (who plays Martha's young sister) in her pre-stardom days, giving us a preview of what was yet to come. She was maturing nicely - without any mention of her celebrated legs. She sings and dances "What Goes on Here in My Heart" to the backing of Jack Whiting's Orchestra.

Bob and Martha have some fine comedy moments, but Betty is cast here in a strangly unsympathetic role. However all ends happily - as they did in those crazy Thirties comedies. Screwball fun. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!
If your a fan of Bing, or just looking for a feel good movie, look no further. This reteaming of the successful pairing of Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald is a keeper.Barry stars as a retiring small town doctor who hires Bing as his replacement without meeting him first. Needless to say, the two get off on the wrong foot, and what ensues is very funny and often touching. Highly reccommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Bing and Barry Make it Fun-Again
This is a charming team- up of Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald who made "Going My Way" such a hit. Bing is a sub-in doctor taking Barry's place in a small town while Barry goes on vacation. The way these two meet on the train is funny and filled with a sense of what can really happen when people start off on the wrong foot. Bing sings, of course, and eventually gets in a zinger about Bob Hope, which you have to pay attention for or you'll miss it. (This was made around the time they were making their "Road" pictures. Throughout Bing is smooth and cool, and handles it all. Its fun, light and makes you think about how it must have been back then. No great plot to look for here, but find instead those nuggets of screen "Crosbyana" that made him such a much loved star then and still so today. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There's a cross on the nuzzle of the pistol with the bullet!
Lesser known than most Bob Hope classics, "Never Say Die" is nevertheless a funny and entertaining entry in the Hope cannon.

Bob stars as a millionaire hypochondriac who mistakenly believes his has only a few weeks to live. Desperate to avoid marriage with a crazed gold-digger (who also happens to be an Olympic sharpshooter) he hastily marries a friendly stranger, wonderfully played by Martha Raye. Hilarious complications ensue.

With a script by Preston Sturges and a great cast including Gayle Sondergaard and Andy Devine, "Never Say Die" is well worth checking out, especially for Hope fans. Recommended.
GRADE: B

(By the way, this is the first film, as far as I know, to use the old "confusing life-or-death rhyme" gag, also seen in Hope's "The Paleface" and used to spectacular effect in Danny Kaye's "The Court Jester".) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars FROM RICHES TO RAGS.
A very dated but rather fascinating study of the power of wealth and contentment which is eventually found at the "bottom of the ladder". This was one of Sam Goldwyn's "cheeky" prestigious films that - in the midst of the Great Depression - lectured the hoi polloi on both the virtues of marital fidelity and genteel poverty! Matriachal Mrs. Lorrimore, head of the the once wealthy Lorrimore clan, schemes to save the family fortunes by organising a "profitable marriage". Joel McCrea is infinitely wholesome as usual, but the picture is practically saved - in a large part, anyway - by the playing of Miriam Hopkins in her role as the unfortunate - but eventually contented - Phylis Lorrimore. The notoriously poisonious Lorrimores are additionally enacted by the excellent Helen Westley as the sour old beldame with the face of curds, Katherine Alexander as Martha and David Niven (at 25, his American film debut) as Clancy, the ne'er-do-well son. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Bob Hope
It is a joy to watch Bob Hope anytime. He was a great American and both of these films are really fun to watch. Road to Bali is an excellent print and My Favorite Brunette is obviously a little less so, but it is still a very nice print... probably a "B". I found both films up to par, the studio has cleaned the sound on them and for the money this DVD is a very nice bargan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Daniel J. Filice was right
I bought the DVD on the recommendation of the person who blessed Marengo Films. She must have been in their employ. The print from which my old Goodtimes tape of "My Favorite Brunette" was made was much cleaner. It's the one I'll keep.

4-0 out of 5 stars This disc is a 50/50 proposition.
I'm a huge Bob Hope fan. I have many of his films on tape and DVD. "My Favorite Brunette" was always one of my favorite Bob Hope films. I have an old tape version of "Brunette" that he personally signed for me many years ago. After reading reviews of how great Morengo Films did with this DVD, I readily bought this disc. I was really excited about the prospect of a "Brunette" transfer that would finally be better than the cruddy verison I have on tape or the copy I taped off of The Disney Channel. I can't say how disappointed I was in "Brunette" on this DVD. I swear the film must have been run through a dust bowl before it was transferred. My Disney Channel copy was ten times better, so either a better print exists somewhere or Disney spent time and money making their copy much cleaner. Makes me wonder how much worse the other DVD releases are of "Brunette." "Bali" was just fine on this DVD. Oh well, at least I don't need to rewind a tape.

But while while taking calls for the detective agency next door, who should walk in but drop dead gorgeou
