4-0 out of 5 stars Barney Fife and Andy are at their Peak, FIlm Quality so-so
Three of the better episodes all on one tape, but don't expect DVD quality on your 32 inch television. Neither the sound nor the film quality has been improved over its original format. But once you get past that you have three non-stop episodes with Andy, Barney and Gomer. The "come-backs" are included also. The following episodes appear in SP speed: I. High Noon.A burglar Andy shot and sent to prison returns to Mayberry. II. The Big House. Barney serves as warden in Mayberry Jail. III. A Wife for Andy. Barney is an overanxious matchmaker for Andy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it more then the series, would you beleive it?
ok, well how about; i love it more then "the nude bomb?"

This is a great movie, and at a great price! This movie may contain a few of the old gags seen in the TV series and recycled a few of the old jokes aswell, its still classic Get Smart material!

After the years have passed, Max and his wife 99 have retired from the spy buisness. Only to discover that there old arch rival Kaos is back in buisness, and with the new spys of the day not equiped to handle taking them on, they find Maxwell Smart to come back and help them!

And the goofyness of Max is back in black and hitting the sack as good as ever before! Alot of the original cast of the TV series have returned and it is very much a film that was worth making! Almost like a reunion for a show that never got a final episode!

This movie is great and contains all your favorite Get Smart lines and antics except maybe one? but they only missed it by __that much! err, sorry about that chief!

But the hillarious goofyness of max and the team is as great as ever, tho they may have all ages, this is a great flick!

If they ever release "the nude bomb" on DVD, i strongly recomend you do not watch that one! It pretty much had nothing to do with the tv series and went more James Bond style, it wasnt funny, it completly screwed up the knowledge of cast and freinds of the TV series, and 99 wasnt even anywhere in sight, and seeing max as guy scoring with all the chicks was not a good idea! Max and 99 are ment to be together forever, and this movie revived that crappy movie they made before this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Missed it by that much!"
This should be the standard for which all made for TV reunion movies should follow! "Get Smart, Again" aired on ABC in the early 90's to very high ratings with good reason, It's good! Would you believe, Great! Yes, Great!
CONTROL is back in business to fight the evil forces of KAOS!
The old gang is back Agent 86 (Don Adams), Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), Hymie (Dick Gautier) to stop the sinister Sigfried (Bernie Kopell) Besides most of the original cast returning many of the series original creative team has returned. Leonard B. Stern, Mark Curtiss & Rod Ash wrote the script and Gary Nelson directed. The movie preserves all of the flavor of the comedy of the Get Smart series yet makes it contempoary enough for today's audiences something the makers of the dreadful 1980 feature film "The Nude Bomb" also starring Don Adams did not do!
The reason my rating is not 5 stars is because of the DVD itself!
The picture quality is very poor. The color is washed out, there is no sharpness or brightness every scene looks as if it were filmed through gauze! The DVD package says "Digitally Mastered" but mastered from what, a VHS tape? Don't let the poor quality of the DVD discourage you. The excellent quality of the movie, the script and all the performances are worth the price! A must have for all "Get Smart" fans! Until we get the complete orginal series on DVD or even a better print of "Get Smart, Again" this will have to do!

2-0 out of 5 stars Get Smart Again - OK, But Where's the Original Series
As many who have created reviews here have said, when's the original series coming out? Probably the political correctness crowd would have a cow over this series, but who cares? It's got the Mel Brooks stamp on it.

As for this remake, yes it's got some of the old jokes in there. But instead of the cone of silence, they tried to one-up the original series by introducing "hover cover" and the "hall of hush". While these were good tries, I miss the Chief and Max trying to talk under the cone of silence. I also miss the original hallway Max walks down with all its doors. In the new version this hallway is out of commission. Boo!

Also, all the old characters are there, but they seem stale compared to the original cast, and of course, there's no Chief. Also, they try to get cute with Siegfried's character by giving him a double role. It doesn't work.

IF the execs get their heads screwed on straight and come out with these DVDs they should just skip the first year and go straight to year 2 when the series was in color. For the afficionados they can offer year 1 later, but to draw a better response they should just issue year 2 if they're going to do anything at all.

I agree with a lot of the comments made already regarding this series. With all the garbage available nowadays on DVD I can't see why they haven't already issued this series. But maybe the studio execs can't figure out how to tone down the original without ticking off half a dozen ethnic groups.

Some years ago I happened to see an episode of Get Smart on either TV Land or Nickelodeon. I thought it was a scream. It had one of those 60's comedy hacks on as "da craw" (the claw). Of course, Max didn't understand that he was trying to say claw, so the villian says "not da craw, DA CRAW!" And it had the same jokes in it about "get your knee off my chest" and the cone of silence and Max's claims to having "10 agents with dobermann's outside, would you believe it?"

Maybe it'll just take a little more time and buyer interest to bring this excellent series back.

5-0 out of 5 stars The DVD mentioned below is an illegal bootleg - Avoid it!
Get Smart has never been released legally on DVD and anyone selling them is selling illegally made copies. They claim to be selling the "complete show of 96 episodes," but there were 138 episodes, not 96, so you can see right at the start they're not reputable dealers. Remember, anyone selling bootlegs is inherently dishonest, as they are committing a crime by making and selling these bootlegs, so why would you expect them to be honest and fair in their dealings with you? Don't support piracy and I think it's pretty disgraceful that Amazon allows reviews that let people sell illegal bootlegs.

4-0 out of 5 stars WHEN THE (GUN) SMOKE OF RADIO CLEARED
one early night i was on the floor playing with my stuff when i heard john wayne's voice. he was talking about a man named jim arness who would be starring in a new half hour show called 'gunsmoke'. well i listend to 'gunsmoke' on the radio on saturdays with my dad and matt dillon was played by mr. william conrad. chester was parley baer. kitty was played by georgia ellis. the show had run for 10 years. i loved the show but my life was about to change.

the television show was adult. they didn't try to tone down anything and my mom and dad wathched the show with me for many years. chester was replaced by chester b. good played by dennis weaver who had a bad leg. milburn stone was doc, and amanda blake. each episode was self contained. the guest list was absolutely phenomenal. many established stars. and many soon to be oscared stars. burt reynolds was a regular, playing blacksmith quint.

many say it was the best western of all time on television. it was just plain the best thing on television. and the radio version was the best thing on radio. i have waited for years for it to come back on television as a specialty channel or videos for sale. it is the best make no mistake this is the class television we always dream about - and seldom get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chester has his problems in this pair of first season shows
It is Deputy Chester Goode played by Dennis Weaver who has the major troubles in this pair of episodes from the first season of "Gunsmoke." In "The Pest Hole" (Episode #24, April 14, 1956), there is a typhoid epidemic threatening Dodge, Doc (Milburn Stone) plans to wind out who the carrier is by exposing himself to the deadly disease. However, it is Chester who comes down with the disease. Then, in "The Guitar" (Episode #35, July 21, 1956). Chester prevents two sadistic cowboys from hanging a simple-minded minstrel named Weed Pindle (Aaron Spelling). The next day the cowboys set out to finish the job, but get more than they bargained for with their little necktie party. This standout episode was written by Sam Peckinpah and directed by two-time Academy Award winner Harry Horner. These two episodes certainly show why Chester was almost as popular as Marshall Matt Dillon (James Arness). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Barney Fife
This is classic Barney! Opie and Arnold knock a baseball through the front door or the old Rimshaw place and are too scared to go in and get it. Barney gives them a speach about how there is no such things as ghosts. Then Andy calls his bluff and sends him to retrieve the ball. Barney tricks Gomer into going with him, and when they get there, they are scared silly by noises and run back to get Andy. He takes them back to prove to them there's nothing to be afraid of. I won't give away the ending. You'll love it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Molly and Lawless John
It's a good old "B" western with Sam Elliot as the bad guy.

Very good for all Sam Elliot fans and Good for all cowboy movie fans.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Language
I like Sam Elliott movies very much. This one was BAD!!! A lot of Bad Language. Every couple of words. It should be rated R. I think instead of PG.

3-0 out of 5 stars A WESTERN FROM THE GENRE'S TWILIGHT YEARS
Had this movie been made a dozen years earlier, it might have found an audience. By 1973, however, the Hollywood western was riding into the sunset and the studio hardly bothered even releasing this admittedly-minor production.

Vera Miles plays the shy, quiet wife of a blustery frontier lawman who clearly doesn't appreciate her. On impulse, she helps a handsome, sweet-talking young prisoner escape from her husband's jail. The bulk of the movie then follows this mismatched pair as they flee across a desert landscape.

The dialog between the runaway wife and the outlaw isn't sharp enough or observant enough to lift the proceedings above the ordinary, but the femininist tone of the script is a pleasant surprise and Vera Miles makes for an appealing heroine.

Sam Elliott, virtually unknown at the time, plays the escaping prisoner. His screen personae hadn't yet developed and so his character never quite comes into focus. At times the movie simply uses him for "beefcake" value and he has several scenes in which he gets to show off that gloriously-hairy chest.

While not a notable contribution to the genre, "Molly and Lawless John" at least brought no shame to the once-proud American western. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Robertta
I just love the old black and white Gunsmoke's. They start with what I call 'the sermon on the mount' where Marshall Dillon walks through the graves on boot hill and talks about what one minute in time can change the course of a man's life. The Hot Spell makes you feel warm, you can feel the heat from the prairie through the TV. I'm a long time fan of the Gunsmoke crew, and especially James Arness. Great guy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome offering from the early era of the show.
Of the two episodes, "Word of Honor" is the best. DocAdams tries to save the life of a boy who has been shot while tryingto escape from kidnappers. When the boy dies, the kidnappers let Doc live, but threaten to kill him if he tells anyone who they are. Doc gives his "word of honor" that he will not. He decides to figure out a way to keep his word while setting a trap that will bring the killers to justice. To viewers primarily familiar with the later color episodes of "Gunsmoke," Milburn Stone's portrayal of Doc will seem much more cratchety and ornery here, as he was playing the character the way he was written for the radio version. Claude Akins is good as the leader of the kidnap gang.

"Hot Spell" stars John Dehner as a troublemaker who manages to antagonize one of Dodge City's most respectable citizens without actually stepping outside the law. This of course creates a problem for Matt Dillon. Not a bad episode, exploring the frequent "Gunsmoke" theme (at least in the B&W episodes) of ambiguity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two superb episodes from the second season of "Gunsmoke"
This videotape offers up a couple of first-rate episodes from the second season of "Gunsmoke," back when the landmark Western was still a half-hour black & white series. In "Sins of the Father" (Episode #56, January 19, 1957) Angie Dickinson guest stars as Rose Daggit, the Indian wife of a man who takes a room at the Doge House. Well, Mr. Dobie disapproves and demands that Marshall Dillon (James Arness) evict them. Of course, Matt refuses, so Dobie decides to turn the whole town against the Indian. This episode certainly shows why "Gunsmoke" was the defining program for the Adult Western era of prime-time television programming, because "Sins of the Father" does not shy away from a realistic ending. "The Last Fling" (Episode 65, March 23, 1957) finds Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake) threatening to shoot a drunken old coot named John Peavy (Florenz Ames) who keeps bothering her. Of course, when Peavy is shot, Kitty is the prime suspect. But when somebody tries to kill Kitty as well, we learn the Peavy had a dark side. Another episode dealing with another adult theme, specifically wife abuse. I caught some of the color Gunsmokes in the Sixties, but these early episodes are just so much better. No wonder this program ran 20 years. ... Read more
