5-0 out of 5 stars A touching, truly special adult movie
I was really surprised by this movie. I expected a cheesy 1960's adult movie. But this movie is truly something special. It is a tender, touching and yes, sexy movie about first love. The acting is superb, especially by heartbreakingly beautiful Essy Persson. The editing, photography and direction is superb. A wonderful movie that reminds one not only of the beauty of love, but also its pain and heartbreak.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sensitive portrayal of first love
This movie is one of the most sensitive handlings of first love. The acting is so well done you suffer along with the characters as they awaken to their mutual feelings. The narration is beautiful and the scenes tasteful but erotic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old film but a goodie!
I saw this movie a few years ago for the first time. It's now part of my film library. Such a provocative film for 1968. This film was way before it's time. I strongly recommend this film if you enjoy Lesbian films with a plot. The film is extremely erotic with the dialog alone. You'll get your fill of nudity too. Very well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie - sloppy presentation!
Radley Metzger at his best! This is a haunting and deeply moving tale about love, sexuality and adolescence. Camerawork and editing are superb. And Essy Persson as Therese is just marvellous. The real downside is the presentation of this movie. The DVD is widescreen (slighly cropped, i think) but the picture is too soft. This is a shame because this beautiful movie deserves a first class presentation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful sexual reminiscence
This movie is wonderfully scripted and acted. Gesture and word throughout are well-crafted, and tell a story of youthful lesbian sexuality, exquisitely and tastefully unfolded and revealed. It is an "adult" film the way film should be for adults: it is about the development of personality and sexuality, an adult film that wrestles the genre away from cheap and hollow pornographers.

In another coup, "Therese and Isabelle" takes lesbianism away from academic feminism and reveals it to be a human sexual experience, rather than a political spasm of inscrutability. It lays bare the fact that girls (perhaps 15-16 years old) having lesbian experiences are quite perfectly human, seeking warmth and beauty, and finding it. The ability of the girls to explore each other meaningfully juxtaposed with the inferior though expert fumblings of a boy of the same age, whose sexual expression is akin to urination, is quite striking and helps expose the limitations of modern culture in which boys tend to be gropers rather than lovers.

The plot is credible. The settings and relationships portrayed do occur. Sexuality is shown to be confusing to some, who become interfering, and a source of enrichment to others. The acting is splendid, giving the characters clear and credible personalities, incorporating sincere emotion and sexuality. Subtleties and nuance are handled beautifully. The script is perfect, with excellent dialog. The girls aren't imbued with unnecessary characteristics such as being amateur philosophers or political agitators. They are developed to be as young people generally are -- concerned with themselves and eager to meet the world half-way. To be commended to anyone over the age of 12. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good film that still crosses boundaries
A young naive couple are slowly seduced by a veteran swinging couple. Some of the comical remarks are hilarious and adds a light touch to this fun film. Jack and Elvira are playing a game where they challenge each other to pick out a person and have to seduce them within a timeframe and they keep "score", thus the title of this movie. Mike the phone guy plays an interesting role in the beginning and end. Calvin Culver plays Eddie who is married to Betsy, but his sexual inclinations are towards men. Betsy is a typical young curious bride, who is enchanted by Elvira's worldly ways. Elvira bet Jack her husband that she could seduce Betsy into bed. This movie is not for the prudish and was way ahead of it's time when introduced. The odd Pink Floydish musical soundtrack seems out of place, but doesn't distract you from the antics going on. Watch this with open minded people only and have fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mindless fun
A wonderful bit of fluff, "Score" takes a wry look at sexual mores circa 1972, as they unravel over one night at a swanky swingers pad in "the village of Leisure." Radley Metzger was one of the few directors who tried to push erotic cinema into the rarefied atmosphere of Art (though whether he really succeeded is another question altogether; Bergman he ain't). This movie, consequently, is much better made than you might think.

Sure, there's a lot one could complain about, but personally I like it all--the silly but clever one-liners, the pretentious camera angles, the dopey "where is the girl?" song (who did that, anyway?) that crops up in the background every five minutes or so. You might recognize Lynn Lowry, who plays the wide-eyed Catholic ingenue, from the horror flicks (Shivers; I Drink Your Blood) she made around the same time. The movie manages to be entertaining precisely because it's so cheerfully simple-minded, because it adds up to not much of anything except some breezy do-your-own-thing philosophizing. It's fun stuff, if you're reasonably open-minded--that is to say, not mortally offended by depictions of omnisexual hedonism. Above all, though, it's a pleasant hymn to innocently lazy summer days with not a dark cloud in sight....

(NOTE: I am actually willing to admit that I've seen the "long lost" hard-core version of this film, which I caught during a Radley Metzger retrospective in Los Angeles a few years ago. The version I saw then is NOT identical to DVD/VHS version available, which has been cut. This is why you'll find all these "jumps" in the soundtrack of the DVD or video during the film's climax. Personally, this doesn't bother me much. Absolutely nothing pertaining to the plot (such as it is) has been cut; only about a minute or two of additional footage--mostly involving the two male leads, if I remember correctly--is missing. It's really nothing you need to see, in my opinion. In other words, don't feel you've been cheated by the DVD/VHS version.)

3-0 out of 5 stars heavily cut
It shouldn't be bought, not because is bad but because is heavily censored - some 30 min missing - and because those people they beleive they have the right to treat the customer like an ignorant and immature child should take a message. It is offending to our intelingence and dignity to be supervised by an invisible censor who desides before us , for us what is good to see and what is not. Myself i don't accept to be treated like that and i encourage everybody to avoid buying censored products as offencive to our intelingence and that of the creator artist. Is a phaenomenon that should be eliminated and it will be if our behaviour as customers is sensitive. Apart from that is of a little importance if the film is good or not. Yes it is ! so what?

3-0 out of 5 stars Score's a bullseye. Well, almost...
Having explored familiar heterosexual obsessions in well-regarded softcore dramas like CAMILLE 2000 (1969) and THE LICKERISH QUARTET (Esotika Erotika Psicotika, 1969), director Radley Metzger upped the sexual ante with SCORE (1972), a good-natured bisexual romp which crosses the boundary into hardcore territory, recently poularized in US theaters by the likes of DEEP THROAT and THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES (both 1972). Based on a play by screenwriter Jerry Douglas, SCORE tells the tale of swinging couple Claire Wilbur and Gerald Grant, who make a bet that they can seduce freshly-scrubbed newlyweds Lynn Lowry and Calvin Culver during a weekend get-together at their luxury Riviera villa. Having plied the hapless duo with drink nd soft drugs ("I'm not a very good junkie!" Lowry complains) and dressed them in costumes which tally with their sexual fantasies (cowboy, nun, sailor, etc.), Wilbur and Lowry pair off for a lesbian encounter, while Grant and Culver descend into the basement bedroom for a full-blown gay seduction.

Artfully photographed by Metzger himself and veteran cinematographer Franjo Vodopivec on location in Yugosalvia, and framed as an adult fairy tale (the delightful opening narration locates the action "...in the lush little land of Plenty, in the enviable state of Affluence... deep within the Erogenous Zone"!), the movie is distinguished by clever dialogue which removes outmoded notions of sexual parameters from the outset. When asked how she differentiates between sexes during the orgies she's attended in the past, Wilbur replies: "First you don't know, then you can't tell, then you don't care!" The plot is wafer-thin, and the acting is merely OK (the women fare best in this regard), but Douglas' script - played out for the most part in a single interior set, with only a handful of outdoor sequences - allows Metzger to build slowly and surely to the climactic double seduction, using reflective surfaces (amongst other devices) to convey sexual dualities within the characters. Viewers hoping for a non-stop flesh-fest may be irritated by the long narrative preamble (punctuated by Wilbur's rough-house tumble with studly repairman Carl Parker), but there's still plenty of uncompromising nudity, and the film manages to stimulate the brain whilst simultaneously tickling your, er... fancy. Great music, too, including an ultra-groovy (and uncredited) theme song!

Fascinating trivia: 'Calvin Culver' is actually gay porn star Casey Donovan, who made his name in groundbreaking titles like BOYS IN THE SAND (1971) and THE OTHER SIDE OF ASPEN (1978), though he later re-temaed with Metzger for the director's hardcore masterpiece THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN (1976). Co-star Gerald Grant only appeared in two other films (Metzger's NAKED CAME THE STRANGER [1975] and Umberto Lenzi's EATEN ALIVE [Mangiati Vivi, 1980]), and it's sad to report that both he and Donovan have since passed away. Claire Wilbur featured in the original stage version of SCORE, but her only other screen acting credit appears to be TEENAGE HITCH-HIKERS (1974), while the beautiful Lynn Lowry has since pursued a career in mainstream movies, including THE CRAZIES (1973), SHIVERS (1975) and CAT PEOPLE (1982). Writer Jerry Douglas adopted the pseudonym 'Doug Richards' and made a name for himself in gay porn, writing and directing a number of celebrated productions, including THE BACK ROW (1973), BOTH WAYS (1976) and MORE OF A MAN (1991), the latter featuring Joey Stefano and Chi Chi LaRue, while SCORE's production manager Branko Lustig has since become a major Hollywood producer, with titles like SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993) and GLADIATOR (2000) to his credit!

Photographed in hard-matte 1.85:1, Image's region-free DVD preserves SCORE in letterbox format for the first time on home video. The print is a little ragged in places, but the framing is excellent and colors are sharp. The upper matte sometimes intrudes into frame, even on 16:9 monitors (including the opening shot, so don't adjust your set!), but never long enough to cause a major distraction. Sound format is 2.0 mono - music and sound effects are fine, but some of the dialogue is a little muffled and sibilant in places, which appears to have been a fault of the original recording. Unfortunately, this print - which bears a 1976 copyright - is the softcore version, running 84m 40s. Metzger reportedly prefers this cut of the film, but the all-important sex scenes are seriously compromised by jarring edits and obvious gaps in the soundtrack. The film remains a worthwhile curio, but its erotic potency has been severely blunted by unnecessary censorship. The DVD includes a typically delirious trailer ("Bring someone you want to excite!"), but there are no captions or subtitles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad, it so severely censored.
Ok, so it looks like we all have seen the Original version at the metzger retrospective, what a beautiful print that was. This dvd has awful sound and picture, and is horribly cut. Hopefully a company with, dare I say it? BALLS, will release this film UNCUT. Cause I have never seen anything like it, and probably never will again, unless they release a REAL dvd of this movie! ... Read more

Don't bother with this! The movie had been cut to pieces in the transfer. The trailer at the end shows you how much is missing.

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie was severely edited. It crippled the film
This movie which I had seen originally in 1995 was ahead of its time. It was sensual, erotic and far surpassed what we have today. The copy or remake was a complete disappointment as the erotic scenes were eliminated and the wide screen idea was a disaster. The trailer(still scenes) at the end of the movie would have you believe this vhs could have been remade using the original movie with full screen. I would suggest it be redone unedited and with full screen. Truly, the copy I have is a complete disappointment ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
No redeeming qualities, except maybe the cute blond in a short skirt. That is all. Dumb settings, not artful or exciting. Who cares about a weird bored family living in a castle, with a grown up son who likes to do magic tricks? Life is too short for this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
I once wrote a review on "Wildflowers" (2000) suggesting that it should have won an Oscar for cinematography. Same thing applies here. Anybody who has been captured by (or curious about) the mystical splendor of Europe's old castles doesn't want to miss this 1970 movie. Whether it's erotic enough (or too erotic for an art film) is another story. Cinematography alone defines pretty well the difference between "Lickerish Quartet" and thousands of sleazy flicks out there. (P.S. I first gave it 3 stars then realized Sylvana Venturelli's stunning beauty deserved another one).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lost Art of the "Art Film"
"The Lickerish Quartet" is a shining example of alternative 1970's film making. In a time when adult films had to be classified as "art-films" to avoid censorship, writers and directors were forced to put a lot of effort into plot, dialog, and storyline. The end result sometimes worked better than others and here we see just how imaginitive a.... film can be. Beautiful cinematography, grandiose setting, and a certain "twighlight-zone" twist, make this film anything but boring. What makes it shine is the way it reflects the ... vision of 1970. The sex is free and easy, though carefully handled and practically "R" rated. If you like seduction, passion, and lovers running through the grass, this is the film for you. There's plenty of porn around, but this is something else. The motorcycle stunt scene is worth the price of the film alone. Director Radley Metzger has secured a place in film history.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated 70's soft-core
To be honest, I purchased this dvd because of the numerous positive reviews I read on the web. I was very disappointed. It is very "70's" looking (and sounding) and has little value as a supposedly erotic film. Outside of a few visually interesting scenes (i.e. an older (ugly) guy and a young (very attractive) woman rolling around on a floor covered with what looks like giant pages out of a dictionary, with definitions of sexually oriented terms). Most of the film came off as pretentious, boring, and outdated. I have seen one other Metzger film to date, "Therese and Isabel", and that one was slightly superior.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it.
Clumsy attempts at eroticism usually come out vulgar, as did this. Alternating scenes of the movie and the home movie within it is only one example. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Softcore deconstruction of 'la dolce vita'
CAMILLE 2000 (USA 1969): During a visit to Rome, the romantic Armand (Nino Castelnuovo) falls in love with a promiscuous young Countess (Daniele Gaubert), but their unlikely romance is opposed by Castelnuovo's wealthy father (Massimo Serato), and Fate deals a tragic blow...

A sexed-up love story for the swinging Sixties, adapted from a literary source (Alexandre Dumas' 'La Dame aux Camellias') by screenwriter Michael DeForrest, and directed with cinematic flair by Radley Metzger who, along with Russ Meyer and Joe Sarno (amongst others), is credited with redefining the parameters of 'Adult' cinema throughout the 1960's and 70's. Using the scope format for the last time in his career, Metzger's exploration of 'la dolce vita' is rich in visual excess (note the emphasis on reflective surfaces, for example), though the film's sexual candor seems alarmingly coy by modern standards. Production values are handsome throughout, and while the actors are slightly hamstrung by post-sync dubbing, the performances are engaging and humane (Castelnuovo and Gaubert are particularly memorable). Though set in an unspecified future, Enrico Sabbatini's wacked-out set designs locate the movie firmly within its period, and Piero Piccioni's 'wah-wah' music score has become something of a cult item amongst exploitation devotees. Ultimately, CAMILLE 2000 is an acquired taste, but fans of Metzger's brand of elegant softcore erotica won't be disappointed.

The movie runs a generous 116m 33s on Image's all-region DVD, which letterboxes the wide Panavision frame at 2.35:1, without anamorphic enhancement. The print is a little ragged in places, particularly at reel-ends, where a couple of lines of dialogue have been clipped by the ravages of time, though the overall presentation is fair. Similarly, the 1.0 mono soundtrack is a little unbalanced, with occasional dips in volume during dialogue exchanges, but nothing too distracting. There are no captions or subtitles, and no extras except for a trailer which offers little more than a series of still-frames, set against Piccioni's memorable (though irritating) theme music. Next up for Metzger was THE LICKERISH QUARTET (Esotika Erotika Psicotika, 1970), which many consider his best film.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stunk
Lame, lame, lame. Rich men, expensive brothel... blah, blah, blah. Waste of money. Don't believe me? Rent it first.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EARLY 70s PSYCHO-ITALIANA
An old story gets a soft-porn twist in Metzger's 1970 outing. Some artfully framed sex scenes, Piero Piccioni's catchy, sexy soundrack, and some fun costumes of the period-imagining-the-not-too-distant-furture make the enterprise a cut way above most films of this genre. Production design fans will like it for no reason other than its aesthethic, which recalls Pietro Germi's great TENTH VICTIM of four years earlier (1966). This was Metzger's best foray before Zalman King usurped the genre (you know, TWO MOON JUNCTION and all that jazz). What one should really do though is find the incredible score by Maestro Piero Piccioni (available on Easy Tempo Records). It's a seductive tapestry of orchestral, psychedelic, and organ-funk sounds with a never-ending bass line.

Art...uh, no. Wack, fun filmmaking of its period, most certainly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A hip "La Traviata"
Camille 2000 is a tale of a rich Italian businessman, Armand, who falls in love with Marguerite, a rich French Madam. The story follows the opera "La Traviata", which is not new territory for Metzger (Carmen, Baby), and is based on the Alexandre Dumas story "Lady of the Camellias". The most interesting aspect of this film is the use of color, the extravagant costumes, and the photography. This film has a reputation as being a sort of "soft-core" sex film, but actually it is very tame compared to many other adult films from that decade. The film does have some flaws, such as editing and acting, however it is visually soothing. The soundtrack by Piero Piccioni is the best psychedelic film music I have ever heard. A good choice for fans of that "Peter Max" look. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mid - 60s Eroticism at its best.
I guess I should start off with this is NOT pornography or obscene. The plot ? Simple enough: It follows the adventures of two (beautiful) ladies, who are prostitues..Or actully, they resemble more along the lines of "call girls".

One is from Paris, the other from Munich. The film itself is actully beautiful to look at - The city lights of these areas have never looked so exotic. The black & white photography just adds to the mood, along with the (dated) 60s soft jazz sound - BUT IT WORKS !

As far as the sex/nudity goes, there is nothing here that can't be shown later at night on your local PBS station. There are flashes of nudity here & there, but its not exploitive. It shows women mostly as bodies of ART, and not sex objects. The sex in the film is very subtle, but I seem to think that with an imagination, it becomes VERY erotic.

This film is actully very tender and deals with issues that COULD be obscene, but in this film - they are handled with care.

Unfortunately, some of the acting is sub-par, the dubbing is fair...I have seen worse..MUCH worse. But if your into the early 60s B&W moody, artistic, film noir style (with a touch of eroticism) - THIS IS FOR YOU.

Very well done - I just wish more erotic film directors would follow the same path, as this gem of a movie. It's never cruel, rude or discusting. ... Read more

Carol Lynley stars as the guileless young woman who becomes the sole heir to eccentric millionaire Wilfrid Hyde-White's fortune in this remake of the Paul Leni silent-film classic. But there's a catch: all the surviving relatives must spend the night in the old mansion. If she dies or is judged insane within the next 12 hours a new heir will be named, and, as if a house full of greedy relatives isn't enough, a homicidal maniac is on the loose, or so informs asylum director Edward Fox, making a dramatic swashbuckling entrance crashing through the library window like a British Zorro. Radley Metzger, best known for his elegant erotic dramas and racy romantic comedies, steps out of the genre that made his name since his debut film Dark Odyssey. With tongue firmly in cheek he refigures the old, dark house farce as a British comedy of manners, nicely capturing the clipped delivery and witty repartee of the drawing-room comedy at the expense of the thrills and chills that make Leni's original so memorable. It's a stylishly handsome and often clever film (the reading of the will, with brash Hyde-White hosting from beyond the grave through the magic of home movies, is an inspired highlight), but it never achieves any tension or terror. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun adaptation of classic stage thriller!
Carol Lynley looks like she's having a ball in this fun, creepy version of the stage play about a bunch of would-be heirs stuck spending the night in a house of horrors. If your kids are planning a slumber party, or you're in the mood for Drive-In fare, this is an entertaining choice for your movie viewing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Spend your money on a different Cat & The Canary version!!!
I bought this DVD in hopes it would be great but instead I find it to be just an average film. This story has been done different times and I can tell you that the absolute best version is the Bob Hope version (Cat and The Canary 1939). That film unfortunately isn't available. Another good version which is available is the silent one from around 1927 and it does a good job too. If I were you, I would try to locate those versions before ever getting this version. Don't get me wrong, this film isn't bad but it just doesn't stand up to the other 2 versions. The premise is as follows on this 1978 version: Glencliff Manor, 1934. A dark/stormy night. The family of a deceased millionaire has been summoned for the reading of his final will and testiment. An unexpected visitor arrives, the chief psychologist from the local mental hospital who is searching for a dangerous criminal escapee. Turn off the lights and you can enjoy this one but I am spoiled by the 2 far better versions so please if you can, see the 1939 Cat and The Canary with Bob Hope and or see the silent 1927 version. Those I promise will make you forget this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oddly appealling
There is something about this film I find oddly appealing. The first half is a wonderful character study while the second half falls into third rate who done it. The quality of the DVD is not what I would normally expect, some scratches, etc. but I found myself watching it several times reliving the joy it gave me many years ago when I first discovered it. It is good entertainment. Favorite line, "except the moth".

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last: A Superb and Fun Chiller For the Faint of Heart!!
The year is 1934. Precisely twenty years has passed since the timely death of Cyrus West. And now, since where there is a will, there's a way--It's time to celebrate!--One of our lucky guests (all of whom are related) will inherit a fortune via a reading from beyond the grave! This whimsical film is designed for an intelligent audience. Its characters are (with a few dastardly exceptions) highly likable people engaging in interesting conversations. Exclusively filmed in London, England, we soon find ourselves surrounded by a most fitting ambiance: Spooky house, too much floor space, constant downpour, a frequent roar of thunder, and the most wonderful indoor fire one could imagine! It's great--In fact perfect--For anyone who is a chicken at heart but wants desperately to enjoy a horror movie! You see, it seems the technical crew didn't quite want to really frighten us. Perhaps the intention was just to get us thinking a bit. For one thing, no one seems concerned about (what is certain to be) a shocking electric bill as the lighting is near brilliant at all times (obviously, the old and remarkable mansion wasn't refurbished with dimmer switches)! Dinner is served, the main course being "Bombay Chicken (with extra curry)". "I think this chicken died in 1914," announces one uninhibited soul. Next come the creeping shadows ("only the shadow knows"), secret passageways, escape hatches, screams in the night, a character who disappears in the middle of conversation, an old clock that starts to chime but never finishes, and yes, even a beautiful black cat. Enter (speaking of beauty) actress Olivia Hussey ("Cicily Young") who proves she is equally splendid with make-up as she is without (for suitable comparison, please see her in the notorious "Black Christmas" which is most definitely NOT for the faint of heart). Olivia does it a lot with her eyes not to mention a very appropriate and low cut red dress. At one point, left in the bedroom by herself a bit too long, "Cicily" remarks (upon her roommates' eventual return), "Where have you been?"; Roommate: "Not far."; Cicily: "Being alone in this place gives me the double creeps." Also joining the party are a host of charming characters who are dressed quite stiffly in formal attire consistent with the time period. There's "Harry", a naturally likable chap; The wrinkly "Mrs. Pleasant"; Mrs. Crosby (full of stately mannerisms); The lovely "Annabelle" (wrinkle free); "Susan", outspoken, and in need of a large mole being removed from the left side of her face); And "Paul", a fine gentleman but also Annabelle's "kissin' cousin". There's also a surprise guest from "down the way" who comes barging on the scene to announce (in Paul Revere fashion), "There's an escaped homicidal maniac on the loose who has escaped from a home for the criminally insane!" . . . "We're just up the road," he adds. Furthermore, he always tries to get in A HOUSE whenever he escapes! Then he likes to hide! "I'm asking everyone in the area to lock themselves in until morning," adds this bearer of "good tidings". This provokes quite a reaction among the genetically predispositioned (mental illness happens to run in the family) ("Remember: Cream first, and coffee later"). A couple of gems: "I don't know why I should be glum"; "Well, I wasn't mad when I came here, but I certainly will be soon!" Get a grip! The relatives can all take comfort in knowing that Mr. West knows something they don't! None of us thought it would turn into this type of evening, but not to worry: All of the jolts are left in Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory. ... Read more
