Rob Lowe and Swayze at their peak and a goofy first entry by Keanu Reeves gave us a glimpse of things to come. He cant act. The only downside to this flick is the highly irritating "lets get it on and make my dad angry" content but other than that a fun, and sometimes funny film. The DVD is very very good with 4 stars for both the widescreen video and audio that you can't tell from 5.1. Four stitches.

It is absolutely a must see every ski season, not to mention it has more quotable lines then the godfather... I can't wait to see Harkin "snake legs" Banks tear up the moguls, Dan make his 'leg spreader", Squirrel take his gondola ride cocktail, and Rudy have his breakfast 'sunny side up, sunny side down... ', and how can I forget, Sylvia's ski pointers. If DVD's can burn out, I am sure this one will.
However, I will NEVER buy this DVD until it is available as a widescreen feature. Especially a movie with such cinematic ski scenes; the producers (in their infinite wisdom) have chosen to release it as a pan-and-scan edition. WHY? Why do these things happen to good DVD's? I've seen it before. Companies release bargain (read: cheap) DVD's to sell quickly, but do not bother to re-master the movies properly. Warner Brothers did a lot of this sort of thing in the early days of DVD, they just churned out movies that were popular 5 - 10 years ago hoping for some rejuvenation. I just cannot buy a feature that has a 1.33:1 ratio unless it was originally in that format (such as a TV programme). By the way, make sure to check out the South Park episode, Asspen, which skewers Hot Dog...the Movie and many other sports movies from the 80's. Keep fighting against fullscreen releases of movies!!!

"Bat-21" isn't really a classic. There's plenty of thrilling action, and the script even manages to find room for irony (as when Clark pauses during a radio conversation with Hambleton while he zaps a few communist troops). Still, nothing really convincingly explains how Hackman manages to elude capture...by anybody (the script makes clear that he is definitely no Rambo). The film also breezes over the biggest irony - that Hackman's code is based on his smarts on the golf course rather than the battlefield. If the film excels over cheap action flicks, it's in the determination and exhaustion of its leads and persistent refusal to avoid Hollywood glory. Also, unless anybody knows of another film, this is the only one I've seen that captures the critical role played by Forward Air Controllers in both prosecuting the air war in Vietnam, and rescuing those airmen nearly lost.
Danny Glover and Gene Hackman really clicked in this one.
As the film claims in the opening, the story about Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Hambleton whose airplane is shot down behind enemy lines in Vietnam is based on truth. Now becoming "BAT*21," his code name, he has to rely on a radio by which he maintains a contact with a pilot Captain Bartholomew Clerk (Danny Glover), who instructs and encourages him to overcome all the barriers waiting for him on the ground. But Lieutenant Colonel has no previous combat experience in his career, and the time for massive air raid that is certain to kill him is coming closer. Frankly, some of the scenes are too incredible (especially when Captain tries to fly the helicopter, which he has not done for a long time). And you cannot expect the high-octaine action sequences, because the film's real focus is set in other places; that is, the bond between the two leading characters, which develops gradually through the unreliable radio contact. Precisely this human part is the greatest asset of "BAT*21" of which quality is raised by the extremely superb acting by Gene Hackman. He is, as usual with any first-rate actor you name, the real energy with his depiction of toughness and frailty, and his powerhouse performance lifts this sometimes clithed film to the above-average level among many other ones about this war.

Martin Sheen plays Esteves' character as an older sucessful neurologist who is visiting Las Vegas during a convention. When a former soldier in a wheelchair appears and pleads for his help, Sheen is forced to recall his position as a psychological tester of US army soldiers who were being trained during the 1950's by the US army for combat in a nuclear environment. The movie mostly consists of Sheen's flashbacks to his youth (played by Esteves)where he uncovers that the soldiers and himself are being lied to by the army about radiation. Esteves, after growing attached to the platoon he was supposed to be observing, becomes way to involved in the nuclear experiments. Sheen gives a powerful performance of a man who must tell the truth about the past so that he can face the future with a clear conscience. Nevertheless, the film has no car chases, no hand-to-hand combat, gunfighting, etc, so it's easy to see why it wasn;t a huge hit. However, if you happen to be a history teacher or just a history buff with an interest in the early days of the Cold War, you MUST own a copy of this movie!!!

And what did I find? Not a horrible movie...but what *could* have actually been a *good* movie (among other things, it's based on actual events-settlers *did* often decide to return east), made mediocre by the fact that the footage filmed after John Candy's death was so easy to spot. And some of the anachronistic humor (including the very presence of the Richard Lewis character), admittedly, did not help. But there were quite a few good laughs. The gay guy turning out to be a masterful gunslinger comes to mind. And the scuzzy Ferguson brothers (even the most distinctive of them made unrecognizable by blank expressions and layers of filth) were hilarious.

While, the acting, I thought, was good, it was the screenplay/storyline that wasn't. I can feel this build up, but the movie never climaxed for me. It just built me up and then didn't really go anywhere with it. I don't blame the actors for this, as I think everyone really was good, it was just wasn't done as well as it could have been.
I got the feeling that the director was high on speed and didn't sleep at all during production, just kept on stubbornly trying to imitate the stylings of Quentin Tarantino except without the novelty nor the talent. Do not waste your money on this. ... Read more

I read just over a year ago on www.digitalbits.com (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/120202htfchat.html) that Millenium may be coming to DVD, however, I have yet to find any additional information on this topic. I loved this series and was very sad to see it come to such a sudden end. If it ever makes it to DVD, I'll be there to buy it. ... Read more

Anthony Edwards (Billy Ray Smith) plays a tenderfoot schoolteacher prone to falling off and accidentally shooting horses. One of his students is kidnapped by the stunningly attractive El Diablo ("Star Trek: Voyager's" Robert Beltran,) and Edwards sets out to find the girl and bring her home. His misadventures with a band of misfit outlaws brings a lot of laughs and even some tender moments. With only minor bad language and some blood here and there, this is a movie the whole family can enjoy. I highly recommend it, and plan to watch it again and again.
