5-0 out of 5 stars Badass Babe!
Anthony LaPaglia is an extremely successful hit man who is hired to whack Mimi Rogers. Problem is that THIS hit man, way down deep inside, is a lonely romantic, and is smitten by his mark. If you think you've heard this one before, think again. Very unusual, very romantic, and a love story that you will never forget. Mimi also shows us how tough a woman can be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bulletproof Heart
This haunting film noir melodrama from Canada should be called, simply,"Irony". When you go back over it afterwards, you'll see all the many little twists and tugs. It requires at least one or two more goings over to fully appreciate the poetic justices and injustices visited upon the anti-hero and his fellow night dwellers. Anthony Lapaglia is, as usual, outstanding, only in a far more restrained vain. His New York/New Jersey hit-man has "lost" his "way", as his aging veteran boss, played by the flawless Peter Boyle, guesses. Young, good-looking, wealthy, unattached-Mick would seem to have the world by the tail, if only it weren't for the fact that he kills people for a living and as of late is having trouble finding meaning in life. He is gotten to the point, in fact, where he toys with killing for no reason-a dangerous line for him to cross, as pointed out by George. Experiencing this torment of the soul after his last hit- a "fiasco", where he had to make a second, successful attempt on the mark-George nonethless begs him to do a hit that same night on a woman for whom George has come to feel extreme affection. (You'll find out why.) Mick reluctantly agrees, bringing along his loose cannon of a best friend, played with whiny innocence by that adorable goof, Matt Craven. Now for the first big twist: the edgy woman, played with uniquely approachable, very real glamour by Mimi Rogers, knows its coming, and has resigned herself to it. In fact, as we find out, she wants to die. You'll have to see it to find out why. When you realize what is going on, your heart will go thump. This goes from quirky film noir to Shakespeare in one deft moment during a most unusual picnic. The story and cast take this film to a conclusion that is sure to shock you, but shouldn't really surprise you. You'll see the nifty clues director Mark Malone has scattered throughout the flick upon later viewings. As warned by others, take the video all the way through past the final credits to the epilogue. The lesson will hit you full in the face, and probably disturb your sleep that night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, twisted, and sad
It's been awhile since I've seen this movie, but I still remember the way that it hit me quite vividly... This movie stands out in my mind because of the depth with which the main characters are played. Both Anthony LaPaglia and Mimi Rogers do a superb job in their parts... LaPaglia as the hitman with a heart, and Rogers as the woman awaiting death. Both of them are caught in such hopeless lives, and their methods of dealing with them are heartbreaking to watch...

This is one of those films where the characters grab you, and for some strange reason you feel like you can understand them, despite all the seeming differences... This movie will haunt you if you let it.

4-0 out of 5 stars soulbreaker
tough story, tough characters, fine performances..

most of the people probably watched this movie because of the headliners in the cast. i was drawn by mimi rogers but the first(and hardest) kick was the "supporting act" by Monika Schnarre as Laura.

i caught myself waiting for her to appear again, but.... that's life.

i wish some casting gurus read this and check her out, so we are not far away from seeing more of her.

honestly, she "made" this movie for me....

5-0 out of 5 stars Ironic Modern-day Noir brilliantly performed.
This is one that seems to have slipped under the radar, yet is one of the most unusual, moving, films of its genre. Anthony LaPaglia, who's played mob hitmen before, subtly adds an intriguing twist to his usual fine performances. Mimi Rogers, another underappreciated talent, like LaPaglia, who even reduced Rush Limbaugh to speechlessness, portrays an icy beauty who knows full well how she is able to influence men. She just can't turn it off. The Noir influence here touches everything, even the actors who all wear an ironic, world-weary mask, down to the cryptic title cards. Even the opening song, "Love is all Around" used more sentimentally in "4 Weddings and a Funeral" is a deadpan anthem to characters who long since stopped feeling anything. Why does Mick fall for Fiona, despite having been on 'jobs' before? It can't be just the sex scene, although interesting for the power exchange. Is Fiona so vulnerable? Once her secret is revealed it would appear that way. Just watch the moment in the warehouse when she whispers in Archie's ear. What about Archie, the bumbling, would-be assistant? The movie seems to hinge on what should be done, needs to be done, as when Fiona begs a trembling Mick "Be brave for me, my darling," and Archie crowing "I'm a guy" are for all the wrong reasons. The climax is shocking enough, but the coda, rolling after the final credits, will have you creeped out for days. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent enough for what it was.
Most of the opinions on this movie are mixed, either it's a ***** classic or a * DUD. The truth is it's just a solid little movie that doesn't really stand out either way.

A group of mismatched travellers are snowed-in in the Rocky Mountains. An officer (Adam Beach) stumbles across a bloody room and two of the hotel customers are missing. Since no one can come or go, he reasons that one of the travellers is the killer. The film scuttles along from there as most of these films do.

The characters are mostly irritating stereo-types - the black trucker with a shady past who's set his life straight, two redneck brothers, a bimbo, and a sleazy guy who would play Chuck Woolery's evil twin if they starred in a soap opera. Also along for the ride is Rose McGowan as a woman who's just passing through -- or is she? A poor-but-honest hotel keeper -- or is he? And a kid who is autistic -- or is he? Okay. He is.

The one thing that keeps me from rating this higher is some of the dialogue. One-liners fall flat time after time and as the villain is trying to escape in a Snow-Cat he keeps delivering corny phrases apparently to keep himself amused. I hate that!

If you thought Joyride and Jeepers Creepers were ***** affairs this might be a good movie for you, but if you're looking for nuanced examples of characters clashing against one another pick up Hitchcock's Lifeboat instead.

Mildly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great film with suspense and excitement.
This movie was a real treat for me. Rose McGowan is my favourite actress of all time. She plays a great part in this movie as Nancy. Adam Beach also plays a good part here. The movie focuses on the dead of winter. It is freezing cold outside and everyone is becoming agressive. It doesn't help that their is a lunatic going about killing people. I reccomend this movie to anyone who likes suspence and light horror.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as these other reviews indicate
You have to consider the setting of this movie, a wintery resort in the middle of nowhere, before criticizing the actors. This movie isn't based in L.A. or New York, the characters aren't supposed to be hip or entertaining. Sure there is several stereotypes in the movie, but they are portrayed very well, and the suspense keeps you interested throughout. If you've ever been in a snowstorm, this movie makes you feel like you are right in the thick of things, and the unlikelyness of foul play happening during one makes it interesting

4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and workmanlike film
This film is typical of its kind. A widely assorted group of characters find themselves trapped in a diner - named The Last Stop - by bad weather conditions. One by one members of the group are killed off, and soon it's a race against time for the local cop, who is among the trapped group, to find out who the murderer is. The tension is quite good, some of the characters better rounded than others, and it's a good way to spend an evening if you just want to relax and be entertained. Good performances by most of the cast make this more enjoyable than the plot would suggest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Stupid
It's a pity that such a beautiful, talented actress as Rose McGowan was wasted in this pitiful, boring waste of film. The plot is weak, unoriginal, and laughable, while the acting is beyond atrocious. Whoever did the casting in this movie needs a brainscan. Adam Beach was terrible, comical even!, as the stranded state trooper. Throw in a tough black dude, a womanizing creep, and 2 drunken losers and what you have is the Last Stop...oh yeah, don't forget to add the corpse into the plot for an additional comical element. DO NOT buy this movie. Don't even rent it. You were warned. ... Read more

Description

As fast-paced and entertaining as Get Shorty, this mob comedy stars Joe Mantegna, Kevin Pollak and Joe Pantoliano as inept small-time hoods who have six hours to carry out a "hit" for "the boss." As if Angelo Martinelli (Mantegna) isn't having a bad enough day as it is, it's his 50th birthday, his girlfriend (Jennifer Tilly) is seeing other men, and his father, "the boss," has given him orders to kill Carmine Dellarosa by five o'clock. The only question baffling Angela is, who the heck is Carmine Dellarosa? As Angelo enlists his gang of losers to help find him, they wind up in even more hilarious and bizarre circumstances every step of the way. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring !!!
Despite the stars in this movie, it is a very boring affair. Hoods is about a wise guy played by Joe Mantegna who is assigned by his father to kill somebody by the name of "Carmine Delaroza" who turns out to be a 9 year olds kid. Despite being sold as a comedy, this movie is not funny. The DVD is in full screen. No closed captioning (despite there is a CC on the back of the jacket). No Dolby 5.1 either. The picture quality is OK. Avoid this. Not worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Kiefer
As a big Fan of Kiefer I have seen this movie several times in german and now bought it in english. Sure, the story is not as exciting as his new series "24", but it's amusing to see Kiefer getting more nervous with each step Pally and Ray do. It shows the funny side of Kiefer's acting and he is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very amusing movie
Great to see Kiefer as a regular guy instead of a bad guy or tough guy. Loved the interaction between Kiefer's character Pally and Anthony LaPaglia's Ray as step brothers from opposite sides of the law who end up buying a race horse together. Nothing bothers Ray while Pally gets more and more stress as they get deeper into trouble. Very entertaining.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kiefer gives s solid performance, but....
Depsite his good performance, this is not enough to save the sloppy direction, weak production and the decpetion of the public through a cover art that is completely misleading.

2-0 out of 5 stars What on Earth is this?!
The swindle begins by the cover art. It shows the two main characters (Pally and his brother and Charlotte), dressed in tie and very elegant. There's simply none of it in the movie!

The story is absurd, the charcters have no charm, it's just another turkey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Probably not worth your time
I'm a Kiefer Sutherland fan. 24 is my favorite show, and I loved Kiefer's performance in films like "A few good men", "Stand By Me," and others.

Kiefer's acting here is good. But the story is not that interesting, and the film never gets you to care about what happens to its characters. ... Read more
