5-0 out of 5 stars A Must See !
I saw this movie when I was a teenager, my best friend and I recommended it to everyone, we even bought the soundtrack, as the music is Excellent. The Storyline, Gymnastics and Romance combine to make a movie which you will want to watch over and over again. If you haven't seen this movie, even though now fairly old, see it, it will be well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ladies and gentlemen, Becky Cameron!
A wonderful movie! The plot centers on a young outcast who is attempting to find himself. Mitch Gaylord gives this superb performance as he shows us a glimpse of the duality of man. On the one hand, he is a tough, street-smart kid ready to follow in the footsteps of his father and work with power tools and wear wife-beater shirts. On the other hand, he is a feminine gymnast who wears tights and does cartwheels. In the end he learns that he does not have to sacrifice one aspect of himself in order to fulfill the other. I also thought the sideplot with Janet Jones and the kid from Mask was nice. That boy has the moves of Fred Astaire and James Brown!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must see
This is one example of a movie that should be on DVD and unfortunately it is not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Movie
I have always loved this movie since i was a child and when i found it @ amazon i bought it straight away. I find Janet Jones Story in the movie much more interesting and it's what i focus on when i watch it. I also Love alot of the songs in this film too. I wish they had of making a second movie but all in all i love this film and i never get bored of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another awesome movie overlooked
I have watched this movie so many times I know the words by heart. Mitch Gaylord and Janet Jones are really good actors. It is one of the best portrayals of modern gymnastics -- showing the intense training modern gymnasts go through to be the best, how relationships work in and outside of the gym, and the transfer to younger athletes within the sport. It is a must for any gymnastics fan! And for those not so interested in the sport it has a great story of overcoming the odds in it too. This is a movie no one should miss! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE the DVD!
It appears the DVD version of this spectacular concert is a bootleg manufactured in Brazil.
It does not appear to be official at all. Nothing stating any affiliation with Prince or Warner Bros. appears on the packaging aside from the name 'Prince.'
The quality of the packaging is poor with a photograph from the 'Purple Rain' era on the cover and no inserts at all.
'Extras' include 'fotos'(pictures of Prince mostly taken from 'sign...' or post name change. Pictures that are frequently seen. Nothing that you can't find in a quick online search.), 'biografia'(What appears to be a biography of Prince...in Spanish!), and 'discografia'(All the album covers through 'The Rainbow Children' and the release year of each album...I didn't take the time to check the accuracy.)..
After waiting months to receive this, I was extremely disappointed and I would recommend getting the VHS version if you are considering this.
It is a legendary performance that needs to be seen, but if you must have a DVD version, you could probably make one of your own from the VHS version that would surpass this one as far as quality goes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forever In MY Life!
'Sign O' The Times' is the most accomplished album Price ever
made and he's made some classics. And this extremely well filmed
concert movie strings togther pure live footage and performances
excerpted for his MTV videos of the period. The live version of
"Forever In My Life" (one of my top ten favorite Prince songs)
kicks the PANTS off the album version. But Prince-what is the
buisness about squirrel meat? And IS life nothin' but a muffin?
Sometimes this guys conversation baffles me but you just can't
fault his sublime musical taste. He's a bit Chuck Berry,Hendrix,
Santana and even Liberace (in dress sometimes, anyway) all rolled
into one unique musical ball.A sheer delight all through!

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT THE PEOPLE NEED
When this hit the big screen back in 1987 I could not see it. I was a mere 13 yrs old and everyone around me gave me a hard time for listening to Prince. Needless to say that those people are no longer a part of my life and SOTT (Sign o the Times) lives on in my heart forever. I still have the album and its maxi singles at home awaiting for me to purchase my self promised turn table to record them. I just cannot wait!!! In the pantheon of rock Prince of old is every bit as amazing in a way the the gloved one could never be. It seperates the hyped ones from the trully gifted people who do more than rely on out dated dancing and empty songs that fade into the furniture. Prince is trully king no matter what the critics may say. This show is trully breathtaking today and a million miles ahead of its time. It is painful to see Alicia Keys attempt to sing (warbble) her way through How Come You don't Call Me Anymore. Why bother when you are NOT Prince??? SOTT features Prince in his second Warner Bros. video release with Sheila E.,the late Boni Boyer,Atlanta Bliss, Miko Weaver, Eric Leeds, and also Dr. Fink (the only remaining member of The Revolution) on keybords in a rousing performance that only serves to put the dance, shimmy, shake, and razzle dazzle on a masterpiece of an album. Among SOTT's highlights are I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, The Cross, and Forever In My Life. The late Boni Boyer sizzles and sings her heart out on Forever in My Life in this breathtaking performance that is worth the price of admission alone. It is trully because of all the love, labor and effort that went behind this amazing production that Warner Bros. should do everything possible to do this on DVD the right way!!! Everyone is entitled to complain about the inferior DVD and rightfully so however, Warner Bros. is to blame for the mess. I am also a big fan of other groups and have witnessed how we as fans often settle for a little less just to get our fix. It's all a part of keeping the memories alive. It's part of our who we are and how the music reflects and connects with us. The album and film is what people today are still trying to capture. It's astounding that the album did not sell as big as Purple Rain considering that the album is made of the funk, the love ballads, crunchy heavy metal chords, and poetic magic that is every bit as tasty as anything that came before!Don't miss out on this show and album because this is the stuff that is NOW and will always be ahead of its time. Do yourself a favor and buy this album and VHS tape show. It will only make you a better listener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obviously a Classic
I remember this like it was yesterday. My old worn out VHS copy is still hanging in there, but if Warner Bros. knows what's good for them (and when it comes to Prince, they obviously don't) they'll give this tape the artistic treatment it deserves.

Classic moments. Absolute classics. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" brings me to tears every time I see it. They are in such a groove on that song that even a nuclear bomb blast couldn't touch them. Simply breathtaking playing, wonderful compositions, and high level performances.

3-0 out of 5 stars confused.....song list on this release????
I absolutely love this concert film, and have not purchased this dvd yet. I am puzzled that in all of the previous reviews there was no mention of the songlist difference from the original film. Unless the packaging is incorrect, the set list is different from the film I saw in the theatre and later on VHS. That version began with the title cut, and also included "The Cross". Neither of these titles appear on the DVD's songlist.

Any thoughts, anyone???

5-0 out of 5 stars Born to Run review
If you're a race fan this is the movie to have. Forget about those hi-strung imports, this one is All American muscle. I have watched it over and over, it never gets old. My blood pumps a little faster every time I see it.

3-0 out of 5 stars racing galore
filled with cool racing scenes and Grieco's wanna be James Dean attitude. though I think Grieco ripped off Dean's red jacket. some scenes are lame as hell. the lead actress is hot(fogot her name) but she is hot hot hot. Born To Run is for the dragracing fans and fans of the cars and the ladies, yeah. fun for a while. the ending is good to.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you like car racing : yes; otherwise: no
This is a very polished high gloss movie with Richard Grieco as a racer kid. The storyline to me was quite boring. Maybe you like it more if you are into car racing. Grieco still has one of his better appearances in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good movie for people who like hotrods?
This movie was action pack and keep me on edge of my seat! I wish they would make a sequel to it? So people would know if they built another beautiful car? This movie was excellent a must see movie?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a step below Perfect Weapon
When most people talk about Jeff Speakman (especially Kenpo Karate practitioners or martial arts enthusiasts), they say Perfect Weapon was his best movie. If any of Jeff's movies are nearly as popular as Perfect Weapon, it would have to be Street Knight. I viewed Street Knight after seeing Perfect Weapon, and I was disappointed. This film does have some good acting from Jeff Speakman and Christopher Neame. Some other actors have their moments, but they are usually few and far between. Jeff begins the film with one of the best performances of his career, but every now and then he slips into this sincere emotionless character. The main reason that people see Jeff Speakman is for his Kenpo Karate skills. Sadly, Jeff does not get to perform in this film to the same extent or expertise that he showed audiences in Perfect Weapon. However, Jeff does get some good fight scenes. The best ones are the last three during the second half of the film. I have not seen many of Jeff's films, but this is certainly better than most of the ones I have seen. It's no Perfect Weapon, but it's good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, excellent style
Actually Jeff Speakman studies a form of Martial Arts called American Kenpo that was founded by Mr Ed Parker. My son and I both study American Kenpo and love to pick out the diffferent techniques that Jeff Speakman's using in the film. Ed Parker is responsible for directing all the fight scenes in the film. Ed Parker is responsible for teaching such notables as Jeff Speakman, Elvis Presley, and Blake Edwards to name a few. He also was the one that is responsible for introducing Bruce Lee to the Hollywood jet set and getting him started in films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jeff Speakman Rules Again
Jeff Speakman again shows his expert skill in martial arts. He is so talented, I wish he had more movies out. I have all of his videos; but Street Knight, Deadly Outbreak, and The Perfect Weapon are his best! I just love him and his style of fighting. I take martial arts but am no where near his level. This movie is also for men and women. It has action, romance, sensitivity, and speaks out against gang violence. Way to go Jeff!

3-0 out of 5 stars respectable performance
I respect Jeff Speakman for his ability to use fast multiple combinations one after another better than any other TV martial artist. He is a world class Kempo champion and sometimes his training really shows.

This movie represents his fast combination style at its bare minimum. He does perform combinations but nothing compared to his shown potential. In this movie he is usually not a super human fighter like most action heroes. After the first few fights, which were to show that he could fight, everyone else in the movie became skilled fighters whose training was only slightly inferior to Jeff Speakmans character.

The combos in this one mostly look fake and I think the movie was just too slow. It would have worked better if he could have dominated the fights more.

4-0 out of 5 stars lots of karate action
A very stupid plot that gets the message across that gangs can work together if the right things are done and common sense is used. One guy did do what he could and stop a plot that could have destroyed a lot of people but ended up bringing two worlds together. ... Read more

The late Albert Magnoli directed this ragged but effective 1984 drama (with lots of musical interludes) starring (the artist formerly known as) Prince as a Minneapolis musician whose ego is his biggest obstacle to fame and love. In the backdrop is a strong story about the character's violent family life and a father made monstrous by broken dreams. Prince's film debut as an actor is not bad at all, and he is surrounded by a few people (Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, and members of his own band) for whom he has served as a mentor in real life. The music is loud and good: "When Doves Cry," "Purple Rain," "Let's Go Crazy"--you remember the soundtrack. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic film. A poor DVD.
I don't think there's a Prince fan alive who hasn't seen this movie, so if you already have it on VHS save your money. There are no special features and it's formatted not letterboxed as it should be! The DVD's Prince bio cites his birth date as 1960. While all Prince fans know he was born in 1958.

Now for those of you who haven't seen this movie: well now's your chance to see one of the greatest films ever made. Unlike so many rock stars' movie debuts Purple Rain has a very powerful story about a confussed and abused young man who faces alienation in the music world he wants to break into. Very emotional. But it also has Prince and the Revolution bringing the house down with their very original brand of music and flashy stage acts.

Bottom line, if you Prince, you'll love this movie. If you don't like Prince you won't.

PS Where is the 'Under the Cherry Moon' DVD already?

4-0 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack of 1984
"Purple Rain" is a great film to commemorate Prince's career, which he stars and writes and performs the songs. Most people remember this film mostly for its catchy songs that changed music history forever. Its plot is also something worth remembering. Its combination of storylines within The Kid's life blends wonderfully: his struggle to stay employed in the Minneapolis club where he performs, falling in love with Apollonia, and confronting his demons of frequently witnessing his abusive father in action. Certain scenes give it edge and drama that keeps audiences interested and that accent the characters' surroungings. The emotional impact is always present, namely the fight scenes. Therefore, the film is more than just a long music video. Such film quality makes it worth watching multiple times. The actors offer their own emotional theme to the film. Though certain roles were not demanding, Prince's role as The Kid is his acting best of his career.

The music featured in "Purple Rain" has since become instant classics. Though every Prince hit is genius, these songs remain his best in his career. Its soundtrack stayed at #1 for 24 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Charts, sold 11 million copies in the US, and spawned four smash hits. Prince earned two Grammys and an Oscar for his song "Purple Rain". These songs combine pop, R&B, funk, rock, and soul beautifully. They alone make the film worth watching; yet, they don't distract from the plot. There has since not been a music-based film like it, not even "8 Mile" (2002).

"Purple Rain" is a great film for music and/or Prince fans for viewing pleasure. Those looking for more should also buy the soundtrack. Such combination gives fans great entertainment pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The last 20 minutes are musical genius!
I just recently bought Purple Rain on dvd. It is now my all-time favorite movie!! Prince is one of my favorite artists and I love the messages behind his music. I had the soundtrack way before I saw the movie. So it was more enjoyable to sing along with the songs. I am also going to see Prince in Atlanta on 8/10. I can't wait!! If his performances are anything like on PURPLE RAIN I can't wait. They are completely mesmerizing. I have to say though his music more than made up for his acting skills. Apollonia was delectable and Morris Day was funny and is quite talented himself. But the last 20 minutes after Morris Day performs the Bird is where the real magic happens. I finally understood the message behind the music. PURPLE RAIN was already one of my all-time fave songs, but after his father whot himself in the head, it made it that much more emotional. The guitar riff in that song is the heavens opening up! THere has never been a song more beautiful than PURPLE RAIN then he goes into another one of my faves I WOULD DIE 4 U its also a beautiful song with some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. Even if you're not a Prince fan, watch this movie. It is one of the most important musical movies ever!! You know Prince won an Oscar for the score, plus Grammys so you know it was good. I mean this movie is in a class all by itself just like Prince, in a class all by himself!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Princely treatment for a pop classic
Condemned for years to a truly mediocre DVD version, Prince's epochal 1984 effort Purple Rain has finally been awarded the reissue it was waiting for. With commentaries, previously-unseen documentaries and numerous pop videos, this 20th anniversary edition has more than enough bells and whistles on it to compensate for the failings of its DVD predecessor.
All of which, of course, wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference if the film itself wasn't up to scratch. Purple Rain, fortunately, doesn't have this problem. It is, quite possibly, the Greatest Vanity Picture Ever: a monumental edifice to the ego, excess and brilliance of the little man on whose life it is very loosely based. Prince plays The Kid, a talented musician who must rise above his turbulent family life and self-obsession if he is to get with the hot chick and have everyone love his ass forevermore. It's contrived stuff, but surprisingly well-played: Prince himself is pretty effective, Clarence Williams III delivers a nuanced turn as his dad, and Morris Day and Jerome Benton do a neat comedy double-act as The Kid's rivals.
That said, the drama is pretty incidental to the musical set-pieces: Prince's place is on stage, and he doesn't disappoint here - be it getting jiggy with a speaker stack in "Darlin Nicki", or putting his heart on his spangled sleeve for the title track. Whilst parts of the film may now seem hilariously dated - dig the motorcyle, the formation dancers, and the "tough" fellas in the crowd - there's no denying the impact and vitality of the stageshow itself. And, as a period piece, this one beats the competition hands down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the 20th Anniversary Edition

But wait. This is 2004 ~ and a 20th Anniversary Edition is slated to be released in August. From the looks of the new edition, I will then give this the five stars it deserves (it already deserves five stars as a film....just not as a DVD release).

Another action flick from an unlikely source (wildly inconsistent Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky), buddy movie Tango & Cash teams Sly Stallone and Kurt Russell as bullet-dodging cops who get on each others' nerves while uniting against a slimy French drug kingpin (Jack Palance). Violent, profane, and packed with implausibilities, this is one of those big-budget, stunt-laden affairs that gets by on the charisma of its stars, and they almost pull it off. Tango & Cash was Stallone's first attempt to share the spotlight with another hero, and he's casually laid-back in his change-of-pace role (well, OK, it's not that change-of-pace), while Russell is equally enjoyable as Sly's well-coifed sidekick. Ridiculous all the way, this one is entertaining if only as a virtual catalog of action-movie clichés.--Jeff Shannon ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Worst Movie Ever!
This movie is so bad, so stupid, that it's great. Where to start? Well, to begin with the acting. No one ever expects a movie headlined by Stallone and Russell to be a groundbreaking film. Nevertheless, their over the top cheesiness (especially Russell's) lends the film a sort of idiotic charm. Stallone's inane delivery of his lines will keep you captivated. Jack Palance even seems to up the cheese factor in his performance. Teri Hatcher is a highlight of the movie, playing Stallone's spunky sister. She plays the part of damsel in distress, but is also very clever and strong willed. (Who knew there would be a role-model for feminists in a film like this? I kid, I kid) The story is pretty cookie-cutter for an '80s action buddy film. You could almost transplant Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte into this film and it would just about have the same effect.

So, with a mediocre script and subpar acting, Tango & Cash could very well be a train wreck of a film (like any Seagal or Van Damme flick). It avoids this though, by being so tongue-in-cheek. Whether or not this is intentional can be debated. I only know that I can't help but watch this film every time it comes on!

So if you're looking for big, dumb fun, this is the flick for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars I miss the 80's
I bought this dvd for christmas and watched it for the first time in a while. Kurt Russell steals the show from his partner and if this movie starred anybody else, then it would have came out a lot worse than it did. Russeell is Gabe Cash and Stallone is Ray Tango, the two toughest and hardest cops in the city. They have done so much damage to the crime syndicate's income that Yves Perret(a brilliant Jack Palance)has to take matters into his own hand and get the duo off the streets. They get set up and end up in a maximum security prison only to discover that if they don't escape, their is no hope for survival. This movie really owes a debt of gratitude to Harold Faltermeyer, who uses all kinds of COOL beats in his score throughout the film and keeps the viewer interested. This movie could have been longer, but I won't complain considering the action films that are being made these days are really stupid!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stallone & Rusell - an explosive combination
I must say I'm a big fan of detective movies, and '80 were great time for that kind of films (action comedies, adventures...). We already had LETHAL WEAPON in that time, but this film really pushed the limits. Critics often say that this is a B-movie, but that is what they think. For me, this is one of the best Stallone's movies and he and Rusell are really good together as two heavy cops alway aguing and having a lot of troubles with Jack Palance, leader of some terrorist organization who send them to prison where they will meet their doom. Of course, they will win and the rest is to you to be seen. Don't listen the others who didn't like it - give your own oppinion (possitive, I hope).

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!
I have to agree with the majority of reviews posted so far regarding this flick. I saw it when it came out in theatres (with my dad; I was just a little kid) but this movie is so cheesy that it's laughable (in a good way) and a lot of fun to watch at the same time. Very adrenaline rushing, action pact destruction and pyrotechnics best define this movie as Stallone and Russle play two cops from the East and West side who cost the local drug lord big bucks by busting all of his drug deals, so he has them framed and sent to prison. They escape of course in order to clear their names and seek retribution. You could probobly find it on VHS for a few bucks at the local pawn shop.....just don't expect Shakespeare. Appriciate it for what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of Action!!
Lots of action for gals (like me!), watchin Sly and Kurt's cute buns and hot bods running through this movie- also Terri Hatcher is great for the guys to see, she can act but not dance ha ha- lots of one-liner wisecracks and great second performances- Jack Palance as a hilarious chief villain, Geoffrey Lewis (who, incidentally, didn't get listed in the credits!)Clint Howard and more! As fine of a plot as one expects for an action flick, come on, its a MOVIE!! and a mighty FUN one, at that! Two L.A. cops, rivalling for headlines & high total of drug busts, and the bad guys that try to take them out! Not to mention lots of zany characters along the way- WHY can't hollywood make a Clive Cussler Novel like this? Funny, witty, lots of action, just like its written! as the Aussie villain puts it, "Balls to plan A!!" as a "B" movie, this one gets MY vote!! Hope you have fun watching it!:) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars incomprehensible
after viewing this tape, i felt as if i was trapped on the dark planet. the story is limp and aimless, with no real direction. badly written plot that makes no sense. who are all the characters supposed to be? i couldnt tell you. this movie must have been written by a seven year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars dark planet
have just finished watching dark planet and enjoyed could not leave the room as i was glued to it great acting from paul mercurio as i had only seen him in strictly ballroom and think that is terrific read reviews about dark planet before watching and do not know what they are talking about i think paul mercurio is a great actor and wish he would do more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad? Did you say bad?
You want to know how bad this movie is? I watched for all of about 10 minutes then shut it off! The so-called special effects resemble those from arcade video games of 20 years ago! Avoid like the plague!

1-0 out of 5 stars So bad it's bad
Michael York in an incomprehensible mess. One of the worst movies I've ever seen. No, not bad-good, just bad-bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than what I was expecting
I am a big scifi fan and a friend recommended this film. I was plesantly surprised to see Paul Mercurio. I have been a fan of his since Strictly Ballroom. He was quite believable as the hero "Hawke." What I liked was that he wasn't completely gung ho and he had a few good oneliners. The storyline was believable and the effects weren't bad considering their budget. The acting was good, especially the main characters. I liked this much better than the first Star Trek film (original cast) and I'm a big Star Trek Fan. I plan on buying the DVD to add to my scifi collection. A good Saturday Afternoon flick. ... Read more

This is a movie no one should miss! ... Read more

One guy did do what he could and stop a plot that could have destroyed a lot of people but ended up bringing two worlds together. ...
