3-0 out of 5 stars John Wayne Supports Buck Jones in Well-Done Western
Here's the Duke, in another Columbia support role, but this time he has a little more time on camera. Buck Jones is the star, as well he should be, and he plays the local sheriff whose foster brother (Wayne) is accused of killing his girl friend's father. Buck works to exonerate him in this well-done B-Western ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars JOHN WAYNE IN MINOR ROLE
This is essentially a Tim McCoy film and a darn good one, too. The "Duke" has a minor, supporting role in it, due primarily to the fact that Columbia's Harry Cohn didn't like Wayne and was giving him bit parts. He later "escaped" to Mascot where he made three serials before landing the Western series at Warner's. And of course, the rest is history. The "Duke" also had a minor role in another McCoy film, "Two Fisted Law," both released in l932. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Compression workaround
I have to agree with the comments on video quality of these two features.
I was able to display the image without the compression by setting my DVD player for a 16 x 9 aspect ratio on my standard 3 x 4 TV. Of course you will have to return the settings to their correct value before watching any other DVD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tarzan and the Trappers/Tarzan the Fearless
This disk contains two features, "Tarzan and the Trappers" (1958) with Gordon Scott and "Tarzan the Fearless" (1933) with Buster Crabbe. While both are reasonably entertaining films, there is absolutely nothing positive to say regarding the video quality. On the disk I viewed, the Gordon Scott feature (which is letterboxed) is noticeably compressed in such a way that the images are grossly out of proportion. Truck tires and the ends of sawed-off pieces of bamboo are both oval rather than round, and characters appear shorter and wider than should be the case. The Scott film is no cinematic masterpiece anyway, but seems to consist of two separated unrelated features thrown together. (Note the radical change in the "Boy"-type character's hair style from the first half of the film to the last.) The Buster Crabbe film is clearly a more ambitious project, and of historical note for Tarzan fans if only for the opportunity to hear Crabbe's ludicrous attempt at a Tarzan yell. The picture quality of the Crabbe feature is, however, mediocre at best - grainy, with no hint of the clarity one would expect from DVD. In fact, there are VHS copies of both the Crabbe film and the Gordon Scott feature with much better video quality. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Olympic decathalon champion Glenn Morris' one Tarzan film
"Tarzan's Revenge" is a minor 1938 Tarzan feature that would have been a major footnote in the cinematic career of the Ape-Man if producer Sol Lesser had gone with his original idea of casting New York Yankees baseball immortal Lou Gehrig as Tarzan. But apparently the Iron Horse's legs were not as imposing as his upper torso, and the role went instead to Glenn Morris, who was the fourth Olympic athlete to play Tarzan (following Johnny Weismuller, Buster Crabbe, and Herman Brix). Morris was the 1936 Olympic champion in the decathlon and won the Sullivan Award as the outstanding amateur athelete of the year (beating out Jesse Owens, which immediately begs the question when did an African-American athlete finally win the Sullivan Award? Answer: middle distance runner Mal Whitfield in 1954). Lester cast Morris for this tarzan film filmed on the back lots of Twentieth Century-Fox with lots of stock footage of wild animals thrown into the mix.

In terms of Tarzan adventures "Tarzan's Revenge" is pretty much in keeping with the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, which is a way of saying that it is not based on any particular one but has elements that often pop up. Lovely Eleanor Reed (Eleanor Holm) is on a safari with her parents (George Barbier and Hedda Hopper) and her spineless fiance, Nev Potter (George Meeker). When Eleanor gets the attention of the evil Ben Alleu Bey (C. Henry Gordon), who wants to add her to his harem, it is up to Tarzan to rescue her. Furthermore, Tarzan is clearly single and able to respond to be looking for a little romance. This particular heresy aside, if you want to know how bad this 70 minute film is, the only thing you need to know is that the reviews were so bad that Morris never made another film. When the female lead upstages Tarzan, you know that is not a good sign. Watching "Tarzan's Revenge" will only make you admire Weismuller's limited acting ability. This one is only for the Tarzan fan who wants to say they have seen everything that is out there.

I hope they'll bring them back on soon because I like taping the so I can watch them over and over again. My favorites are Tarzan and his Mate(very romantic and errotic) Tarzan the Fearless(I love Buster Grabbe) and the other Johnny Weismuller movies, like Tarzan and Huntress, Tarzan and the Amazons, and Tarzan Triumphs(That Johnny Sheffield is so cute in his spedo-like lioncloth). And then theres this one Tarzan's Revenge. Where this Tarzan (Glen Morris)saves his new lover Elanor from an wicked Rich african leader. It's sort of like Tarzan the Ape Man except his loves an Elanor and he saves her from that leader instead of killer pygmies, but it's still good. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Hitchcock
This B-film from Warner Brothers concerns the mysterious and deadly goings-on at a boarding house owned by Frieda Inescort and Miles Mander, who live there along with their daughter Heather Angel and several boarders. Among the boarders is a struggling writer, an eccentric spinster, and two men involved in shady business. In the course of the film's one hour running time, bodies begin to pile up as the writer tries to figure out the identity of a killer. The actors all express the appropriate amount of shock and confusion as the mystery deepens, and the pace of the film maintains the suspense. The direction could be sharper, and I found the story a little confusing at times, but I did like the twist ending. Very few people have heard of Shadows On The Stairs, and although I think the comparisons to Hitchcock are a real stretch, fans of B-films will want to check this one out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great B western serials and stars
If you're more of a action type of B western cowboy fan than a singin cowboy fan ( like I am ) then Tom Tylers your man. Tom was right up there with Bob Steele,Buck Jones,Ken Maynard, and Tom Mix. A full 10 chapters and each cliffhanger was guaranteed to bring those kids back every Saturday back in 1931 when this picture was made. To me the B-westerns of the 30's were the best. They had plenty of great stunts with horses, the hats were bigger, and they had some of the toughest fights ever filmed. This serial also features Ken Maynards brother Kermit. This is a must to have in your collection for the Bwestern fan.Enjoy ! ... Read more

It's sort of like Tarzan the Ape Man except his loves an Elanor and he saves her from that leader instead of killer pygmies, but it's still good. ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Ridiculous Programmer
John Loder and Ruth Ford star as a soon-to-be divorced British couple who make a crash landing in the Syrian desert along with American pilot Warren Douglas. They wander into a strange village populated by devil worshippers, and although they first become guests of the sheik, they soon become condemned hostages in retaliation for the execution of the sheik's brothers, Nazi spies, by the Allies. This is a quick programmer from Warner Brothers, and it's not very good. Ford shows some potential as an actress, but Loder and especially Douglas give incompetent performances. Paul Cavanagh, as the sheik, displays some skill, while the rest of the cast is negligible. The dialogue is stilted and the story sometimes ridiculous, with the last fifteen minutes being particularly hard to swallow. It's hard to believe Warner Brothers produced this film the same year as Casablanca! ... Read more
