5-0 out of 5 stars 2 great episodes from Season Five
This videotape includes 2 good episodes from the fifth and final season of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS, the delightful series about the lives and loves of the Bellamy family (upstairs) and their servants (downstairs).

"Wanted, A Good Home" - The Bellamy household is thrown into chaos when Lady Virginia's (Hannah Gordon) young daughter brings home a stray puppy.

"An Old Flame" - James (Simon Williams) is still reeling from the death of Hazel, but finds himself back in the arms of Lady Diana Newbury (Celia Bannerman), when they bump into each other at a seedy club.

2 great episodes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent episode
This videotape comprises the last episode from the memorable first season of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS, the classic series about the lives of the Bellamy family and their servants of Eaton Place.

"For Love of Love" - Elizabeth Bellamy (Nicola Pagett) has fallen from grace at the hands of political activist Evelin Larkin (Georgia Brown) and is at the mercy of her parents. When she decides to move out and live with her friend Henrietta, the household is thrown into shock. Even more startling is her relationship with thoughtful poet Lawrence Kirbridge (Ian Ogilvy).

Hastily, she and Lawrence are talked into marriage, but will Elizabeth really be happy?...

This is one of the best episodes from the first season, with a great performance from Nicola Pagett (always a joy to watch). Highly-recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is Sad
Although I can't help but love any Jeeves and Wooster episode, this one is too strange not to be a disappointment. Sadly, the directors of this series strayed far from the style of Ferdinand Fairfax and other early directors. These ones are zany, contain too much physical comedy, and stray too far from Wodehouse's writing. One interesting aspect of this episode is the chance for Americans to see how the English percieve America - this episode is based on the New York stories. Included in this episode are the noted nerve specialist Sir Roderick Glossop and his overly sporty daughter Honoria Glossop, Bingo Little, his uncle Lord Bittlesham, and some others. In the episode Bertie tries to ward off Sir Roderick's attempts to set up a marriage between Bertie and Honoria. Basically, this is the worst episode of a wonderful series, so it's not too bad. Buy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jeeves and Wooster Episode With All the Best Characters
This is classic Jeeves and Wooster. Ferdinand Fairfax has done an amazing job putting Wodehouse stories on tape. With Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, Wodehouse seems to have been blessed with actors born to play these unforgettable characters. In this episode, set in Totleigh Towers (which Bertie calls "the hell hole we know and love"), Bertie is in high spirits because both Madeline Basset (who believes that the stars are God's daisychain) and Lady Florence Craye (who's nickname in the servant's hall is Lady Caligua) are safely engaged to be married. Other characters in this episode are Sir Roderick Spode (the leader of a fascist group and previous owner of a lingerie shop who is engaged to Madeline), Florence's "absolute idiot" fiance Ginger Winship, Madeline's father Sir Watkin Basset, Tuppy Glossop, and Brinkley, Bertie's evil ex-valet. An interesting aspect of this episode is the up-coming bi-election in Totleigh-in-the-Wold, in which both Winship and Spode, as conservatives, battle the "red" candidate Comrade McCorkadale for a seat in parliament. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading...
I bought this video to use in my classroom. It wasn't until I received it in the mail that I saw on the side that it was BOOK THREE!! There is nothing in the description that says it's book three. Be advised - this is not the movie version of Orzy's original novel. I am SO disappointed!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally disappointing!
This movie is totally disappointing! Too bad I HAD to give it one star - I wouldn't even give it that much! They completely butcher it! I am a Scarlet Pimpernel fan and was disgusted when I saw it! I've read the books and it is nothing like it!!
It's a shame that it's even called "The Scarlet Pimpernel".
What kind of disguise do you call a black coat, hat, and mask? Where did Minette come into the picture? Percy is not funny! Marguerite is rude, Chauvelin is a vile creature, Lord Tony is too short, the Prince of Whales is a nitwit and Percy is too stupid to be the Pimpernel! Did any of the script writers actually READ the book??
I would not recommend this version to ANYONE!
On the other hand...if you want to see a good one - get the 1982 one with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews. Now, THAT'S A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Scarlet Pimpernel
Richard E. Grant has an oppertunity to show his talent in the A & E Pimpernel series, and he doesn't disappoint. I've been a long itme fan of the Scarlet Pimpernel, so I'm apprehensive each time a new version comes out. This version does not disappoint. I recommend it to anyone, but especially those who haven't been introduced to the Scarlet Pimpernel before. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ANNA KARENINA THAT IS AVAILABLE - BUT
This beautiful classic love story with its beautiful classic stars has been slashed almost beyond recognition. What is even more upsetting is this version of this movie in its original presentation was at least 2 hrs 18 mins. long. I know this to be true because I saw it on TV and taped it at that time. (Since giving this review, I have learned that even the version I taped had been cut. I understand this movie originally ran about 2hrs & 40 mins.) I have been hunting for this movie as it was originally meant to be seen for years. I bet there are many, many people who would have been happy to pay additional cost to get "the whole thing". I rated it 5 stars because the costuming & locations are so beautiful and the chemistry between Christopher Reeve and Jacqueline Bisset is a sight to behold. But whoever made the decision to produce this short version should be ashamed. My big hope now is that it will be rerun and I will be fortunate enough to catch it and tape it again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay Version of Tolstoy Tragedy
Jacqueline Bisset's version of Anna seems to concentrate on her mental health. She plays Anna as a mentally unstable, emotionally stunted woman who desperately clings to her Vronsky (Christopher Reeve) as though if she does not have him than she is lost forever. She perception of the role's mentality is very interesting,as the others who have played her (Garbo,Leigh and Marceau) all live up to this barren, vampish woman looking for a lover.

Also starring Judi Bowker,Joanna David and David Ogilvy

5-0 out of 5 stars The best "ANNA KARENINA" of them all!
I loved this movie and keep watching it over and over. Leo Tolstoy would have been very proud of this movie. The ending is just as sad and tragic as in the book. The actors are superb and the movie sure captures the beauty of Russia in the 1800's. It is a beautiful story of the classic love triangle. But there are a few things that are wrong with it. It is too short for a great love epic ( the movie is only 94 minutes long) and the director should have not used too many scenes with trains. But this is a great movie with beautiful sets and the spirit of the aristocratic Russia in the 1800's (unlike the 1997 version with tons of porno shots and miscast actors.) Trust me, You have to get this movie. It will be enjoyed by generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Anna Karenina of them all!
It is abeautiful epic of the classic love triangle. Tolstoy would have been very proud of this wonderful production. The ending is just as sad and dramatic as in the book. The actors are wonderful. But the movie is very short for such a great story (it is only about 94 minutes long) and the director might have been more wise not to include so many scenes with trains. All inall it is a great movie and I enjoyed it. But I cried for an hour because of the ending. It is the most beautiful Anna Karennia.Trust me, you just have to get this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Telling of the Classic Story
Of all the various versions of Anna Karenina, this is my favorite. Christopher Reeve is the definitive Vronsky. Beautifully filmed and full of passion, it's a beautiful film to watch over and over. The only fault, is the failure to include the vitally important character of Levin. ... Read more
