5-0 out of 5 stars "Sorrowful Jones" will make you laugh and feel great!
I have loved this movie for so many years. Bob Hope has never been better than in "Sorrowful Jones". The little girl is an absolute doll and you will fall in love with her instantly. Lucille Ball has an excellent chemistry with Hope and that is why I suppose they made three other pictures together. The whole movie is just wonderful and I promise you that if you haven't seen it, you will love it. I have seen the original "Little Miss Marker" and all the remakes but this film is the best of the lot. Have some Kleenex close by also because along with being very funny, it will pull at those ol' heart strings too. Don't miss it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kooky
I loved the Beatnik episode. He was the first character on the show that wasn't overly freaked out by the Addams. It was a refreshing change. I liked the way the children reacted to the beatnik. Overall, it was fun to watch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as funny as I thought.
This episode is very rare and difficult to come by. I put a lot of effort into it because of the title. I was expecting - Beatnik - maybe a poetry writing black turtleneck wearing artist. What fun that would have been. Instead you get this motorcycle guy traveling the country who just happens to break down near the Addams Family home (almost ala Easy Rider but not nearly as cool). I am sorry to say I was hugely dissapointed with this episode. Art was a better episode. Even as a huge fan/collector, I would have to recommend not going thru a lot of trouble to get a copy of this episode. If you want an alternative suggestion - try Wednesday Leaves Home/ Green Eyed Gomez. That is absolutely the best one, in my opinion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun Hope Christmas flick
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this lesser-known Bob Hope Christmas film. Bob Hope plays a shifty race track con man who finds himself with only the few remaining weeks to Christmas to procure the $10,000 he accidentally scammed a mobster out of. The Lemon Drop Kid flees to New York where he rounds up his old friends to help him in a scheme that involves a shelter for old ladies and a lot of sidewalk Santa Clauses.

Even when he was playing a lout, Hope was still somehow sweet and loveable. No matter how dirty his deeds, he never crosses a line that you can't forgive, and he always redeems himself in the end.

The disc,as was to be expected, was pretty barebones. Unfortuntely, not a lot of effort is put into the releases of these older films unless they're universally-recognized classics like "Casablanca". Still, the film is enough fun to get this DVD even without the extras that make the format so worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Lemon Drop Kid" is one of Hope's best !!!
I love this movie! I have seen it so many times and will never tire of watching it. Bob Hope is a riot and the whole Christmas storyline makes it probably my all time favorite holiday movie. I love all Damon Runyon adaptions and this and "Pocketful of Miracles" are just great classic films. My other fave Hope/Runyon film is of course "Sorrowful Jones" with the Queen of Comedy Lucille Ball. If you haven't seen "The Lemon Drop Kid" then I strongly suggest you see it because you will fall in love instantly with this great Bob Hope classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Christmas movies ever made
The Lemon Drop Kid is one of the lesser known Christmas movies probably because, in a sense, it doesn't try to be a traditional Christmas movie.
Bob Hope plays a con artist who is run out of Florida and winds up in New York City during a very bad cold snap. He is in hock to the mob and desperately needs to raise some cash.
He comes up with a fiendish plan, he sets up a home for old ladies and funds it Santa's ringing bells a la the Salvation Army. The problem is that he intends to take all the money and leave the old ladies stranded on December 26th.
Of course, being a Christmas movie, that doesn't happen, the kid has a change of heart, and along the way the movie provides Bob Hope in his prime as the ever loveable wise guy.
This movie also introduced the wonderful "Silver Bells" which is more famous than the movie itself.
If you're looking to add a movie for Holiday viewing, or really to watch anytime, this is a delightful addition.

4-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITE HOPE MOVIES
An this is also overlooked as a Christmas movie. Hope plays the Lemon Drop Kid. A race horse tout in Florida who unknowingly gives the wrong tip to gangster Moose Moran and costs him $10,000. Moose give him until Christmas to come up with the money or else.

Kid goes to New York to see his girl played ny Marilyn Maxwell and to cook up a scheme to collect money for a bogus home for old ladies to pay off his debt.

he enlists local crooks and con men to dress up as Santas and collect money on steet corners for the phony charity.

Hope is at his best as the fast-talking and wise cracking Lemon Drop Kid. The movie is notable for Hope and Maxwell's singing Silver Bells, which would become a staple of Hopes annual Christmas specials.

Look for William Frawley of I Love Lucy as one of Hopes con man friends. Funny movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Kid" avoids pitfalls, delivers rare holiday gem
Bob Hope's movies generally make me squirm with their heavy-handed comedy schtick, even "classics" -- those Hope-Crosby road movies -- don't live up to their reputations. And then, of course, there's the Hope plus Phyllis Diller equals pain movies of the 60's... BUT...

This movie is a gem. Its puns still work, it features a deep cast of character actors that fill small moments, and surprisingly, gives Hope a role that even his hamming doesn't get the best of. Definitely a perennial holiday favorite for me (as a kid I watched this every year between the gazillion forgettable Christmas Carol remakes).

Usually I cringe during the inevitable musical numbers in the movies of this period (made in 1950, released in 51), but the two numbers here are not forced, nor prolonged, and -- geez -- fun? Yeah, fun. I'm an avowed musical hater, to give you some perspective.

There might be a few moments that are pure camp, but if you're looking for a funny movie that's got sentimental elements that aren't saccharine, your kids will enjoy, and is worthy of a viewing or two or three, look no further. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars DRUE VAN ALLEN.
Stanwyck plays the above character in a rather untypical role: that of a happy college girl who gets romantically involved with the now-forgotten Hardie Albright - who has been seduced by Communist propaganda.... Because of its anti-Communist theme, RED SALUTE was so notorious in 1935 that it occasioned a riot by leftist students when it opened at New York's Rivoli Theatre. More than 150 students demonstrated with many being arrested. Constance Cummings was originally to play the Stanwyck role in this variation of the IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT theme. Without the anti-red preaching, it would have been a pretty decent comedy: it was re-released as RUNAWAY DAUGHTER with some cutting of the controversial theme, and was shown on TV entitled HER ENLISTED MAN (!).

3-0 out of 5 stars A little film with big results.
RED SALUTE is a screwball comedy about the runaway daughter of an army general and her meeting with a soldier down Mexico way. It stars Barabara Stanwyck and Robert Young. The film is well acted, solidly directed with some nice action/chase scenes. Yet it is a minor screwballer at best, not particulary funny at all with a weak script. Certainly worth seeing yet not great. The most fascinating thing about Red Salute is it's somewhat anticommunist theme. Stanwyck's boyfriend is a communist agitator working for the Soviet Union and the film does not approve. Yet it's anti-red message is really not very strong. This is a screwball comedy after all. The form does not really allow for long digressions on social/political/historical theory. And, like Nazism, Communism does need to be explained. NINOCHKA has the same problem. Consequently, RED SALUTE's anticomminism is about as hard as a soap bubble. Yet this film resulted in liberal riots and theaters being firebombed upon it's release. This is the film that Hal Wallis of Warner Bros was referring to when he nixed an anticommunist film the studio was planning in the early Forties, remarking that the reds would only bomb the theaters. This film, because of the violent liberal reaction, kowtowed the studios so that freedom of expression in regards to making films about the communist menace was effectivley destroyed until the late forties. This film. This little film that so enraged the liberals. Amazing.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing example of liberal censorship
When Red Salute was released in 1935, the theaters playing it were bombed and the liberals rioted. The effect; freedom of speech was stifled in this country concerning any attempt to make films about the Communist menace. It was this film, for example, that Hal Wallis of Warner Bros was referring to when he put a stop to a propossed anticommunist comedy in the early forties, citing that the communists would probably smoke bomb the theaters. The amazing thing? Red Salute is a screwball comedy! And it is not that good a screwball comedy at that. It's a good film to be sure. The action sequences are very well done. It is well acted. It is just not that funny. And, as a anticommunist film, it is not that effective. To be an effective anti anything, one must first explain it and communism, like Nazism, takes some explaining and Red Salute is a scewball comedy. The genre really doesn't allow for long historical political explications. Though, the film does make the point the communism is a fraud that no mature thinking person could ever embrace. But it is a mild point. As hard as a soap bubble. Yet, because of this film, there were riots and censorship for years. This little insignificant movie. Makes one wonder what liberals mean when they talk about freedom of speech. ... Read more

There might be a few moments that are pure camp, but if you're looking for a funny movie that's got sentimental elements that aren't saccharine, your kids will enjoy, and is worthy of a viewing or two or three, look no further. ... Read more
