A pioneer of America's first frontier came to life every week for years--now you can relive his adventures with Daniel Boone: Premiere Episode. In "Ken-Tuck-E," Fess Parker as our national hero must take territory from the natives in order to prepare for war with the British.Along the way, we meet his family, friends (including Ed Ames as Mingo), and enemies as "Dan'l" fights, talks, and sings his way through scrape after scrape. Though some of the characterizations might offend modern sensibilities, if viewed in context the show can be seen as respectful (except possibly to the British and raccoons). This classic episode shows why Daniel Boone stayed in living rooms for so long--charm and adventure go a long way in this country. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE DAYS OF YESTERYEAR
As several have said, Fess Parker was a better Daniel Boone than a Davy Crockett. Oh well, he was Davy only four or five times, and Daniel about SIX YEARS. Practice does make perfect. This is a good video for nostalgic reasons and fairly believable acting. If you are a historian who nitpicks about accuracy, then don't watch. It was amazing to see Plains TeePees intermingled with East Coast wigwams. Some of the tribal costume was out of place as well. Oh yes, some of the "Indians" needed a little more berry juice for complexion.
Other than that, this is an excellent video. It is very family oriented(Daniel does not take the Indian wife that is offered to him because Becky is waiting back home), his family always runs to meet him, and gets angry if he has to leave again. He tells stories to his children, and sings to the Missus.
Yes, there is some violence and killing and probably excessive, but Dan'l doesn't kill unless it is to protect someone, and tries avoid it if possible.
These things just are not done in films today, and if they are attempted they just don't have the same spirit.
This video(may there soon be more!!) also gives our children a chanced to see a program that excited us when we were young. everyone has seen all the Peanuts cartoons, and odds and ends of famous sci-fi, but this is a simpler life video.
It is also great to see familiar faces we haven't heard from in years like Ed Ames, and did anyone notice George "Goober Pyle" Lindsay up on the stockade wall during the battle?
AHHHH for the days of clean, if very inaccurrate historical stories. Yes we were very prejudiced in those days, but I think things like this were the beginning of racial acceptance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dan'l Boone living large on the frontier of Ken Tuck E
"Ken Tuck E" is the pilot episode for "Daniel Boone," which originally aired on September 24, 1964. Fess Parker, who had become famous in the 1950's playing Davy Crockett for Disney, became even more successful as American frontiersman and folk hero Daniel Boone. Technically a "Western," the series was set in the 18th century, right before the American Revolution, when the "west" was the North Carolina-Tennessee-Kentucky! In this pilot episode Dan'l gets his friends, both Indians and settlers, ready to fight the British. Ed Ames co-starred as Dan'l's Indian friend, Mingo, while Patricia Blair played Rebecca Boone, Veronica Cartwright was daughter Jemima, and Darby hinton son Israel. The show also featured Albert Salmi as Yadkin and Dal McKennon as Cincinnatus, the tavern-keeper of Boonesborough. This first episode is certainly representative of the series, which focused on Boone's encounters with friendly and hostile Indians, his pioneering exploits, and his relationship with his family. I know I am not alone in thinking that Parker made a better Daniel Boone than he did a Davy Crockett.

5-0 out of 5 stars great family entertainment
I agree with the other reviewers, this is great family entertainment that you aren't ashamed of letting your kids and family see. I think all the baby boomers and even some of the kids of today would enjoy seeing this series on DVD or at least VHS.

Please pass this on to the ones who decide what is coming out next on video.

4-0 out of 5 stars fun early rock movie
the star jimmy clanton has good hair, perhaps the best of any teen idol, but musically he just can't cut it. Thankfully, a lot of other performers in this movie can, especially the great Churck Berry, which is what makes this movie worth watching. why don't they make movies like this today? probably because there is no such thing as innocence anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars musical time capsule
Released in 1959, GO, JOHNNY, GO! is a musical time capsule. While the acting and plot leave something to be desired, the film is still worth checking out for it's performances of the artists featured. The film stars the legendary ALAN FREED who's looking for his next big act. JIMMY CLANTON co-stars as the act FREED is trying to find. Jimmy sings several songs as does CHUCK BERRY, who makes his acting debut in the film. Intercut throughout the film are musical performances by some of rock n' rolls biggest hitmakers at the time. While this was the standard practise for these films (eg. Rock Around The Clock, Don't Knock The Rock, Rock! Rock! Rock!, Mr. Rock And Roll)(having artists lip synche their latest recording)these films are often the only footage in existance, of these artists in their prime. GO, JOHNNY, GO! features several memorable performances. JIMMY CLANTON, SANDY STEWART, JO ANN CAMPBELL, THE CADILLACS, and THE FLAMINGOS all give memorable performances but the standout performances by the other legendary stars makes this film unique. CHUCK BERRY not only acts in the film but performs his classic "Memphis Tennessee". EDDIE COCHRAN is seen in one his few performance clips. RITCHIE VALENS is seen performing "Ooh My Head" in what was his only movie performance. Within a few months time Valens would be killed in a plane crash along with BUDDY HOLLY and JP "THE BIG BOPPER" RICHARDSON. Also appearing was the talented HARVEY FUQUA of THE MOONGLOWS performing "Don't Be Afraid To Love". By the time of this film the original Moonglows had dibanded and Harvey would start recording with his "New" Moonglows group which included young MARVIN GAYE. Harvey gives an exciting performance in the film. He seems to glide across the floor not much unlike Mr. Excitement, JACKIE WILSON, who performs his self penned #1 R&B hit "You Better Know It". Wilson gives a performance that only gives us a glimpse at how great a performer he was. Unfortunately Jackie would only appear in one other film during his career, 1961's TEENAGE MILLIONARE. Which also starred JIMMY CLANTON. So do see the film not for the plot but for these rare performances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvellous musicians in "GO Johnny GO"!
Seen this music a long time ago, in the 60's when I lived in Surinam. Absolutely great music of the 50's by hot shot artists. A few names...Ritchie Valens, Jackie Wilson & Chuck Berry. Main actor/singer is Jimmy Clanton with songs that thrill me till this very day. Hopefully this movie will be released again soon! Shaneeca - Amsterdam - THe Nehterlands

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good, recommended, but where's the DVD?
The previous reviews hit the nail on the head, so I will avoid repeating the plot here.
What I can say is that as a small kid in the late 60's this often played on New York TV as the "Curse Of Dracula" (often on WNEW's "Creature Features" on Saturday night), and I never missed it.
The slow motion scenes of Francis Lederer rising from his fog enveloped coffin are quite eerie and effective.
Unlike the early Universal series and the later Hammer color series (actually started back in 1959 just 2 years after this one), this film stands alone without any sequels. Too bad in a way, as Lederer really is a good Dracula. Though recently on a cable station I caught an episode of the Rod Serling early 1970's TV series "Night Gallery" where Lederer once again played Dracula, this time rising as a kind of hero against the Nazis who storm his castle. Interesting twist there. I recommend trying to catch that if you (like me) are nostalgic for this old black and white film.
I remember once reading from a horror film critic that this film was a breath of freash air when it came out in the late 50's because at that point nearly all horror had become sci-fi movies, or giant morphed radioactive invading bug films, and the more gothic style horror was out of fashion. Seems to be accurate as a list of the movies that came out at this time will bear out.
So, if you saw this as a kid, or are nostalgic for the time period, this certainly would have made a fun Saturday night after hanging out at the soda shop type of movie.
Now where's the DVD? My 1993 video copy is kind of grainy and i'm a bit surprised that, with all of the obscure films out there on DVD already, that this hasn't yet made in into the digital age.
Yeah there's

4-0 out of 5 stars Dracula on the loose in a small California town
"The Return of Dracula" may well be the Dracula film that proves once and for all that the success of one of these movies depends not on the plot, the sex, or the blood, but simply on who plays the count. Francis Lederer certainly offers up one of the most suave versions of Dracula and this overcomes some of the problems with the script. Our story begins in Transylvania where Count Dracula kills a Czech painter on a train and assumes his identity, which explains why the vampire ends up in a small California town where he stays with his "relatives" the Mayberrys (my hand to God, I am not making this up). Young Rachel (Norma Eberhardt) does not understand why anybody would sleep all day, but when her best friend dies she discovers she has bigger problems (like an offer for eternal light).

Actually, despite the bucolic setting, "The Return of Dracula" is an effective low-budget horror film, supported by Lederer's performance and Paul Landres' direction, which goes for chills without blood as the count starts feeding on the locals. Pay attention because Mel the baggage clerk is Mel Allen, the voice of the New York Yankees (Go figure). "The Return of Dracula" made it to late night television as "The Curse of Dracula" while in the U.K. it was known as (gasp) "The Fantastic Disappearing Man," which is one of the few times I have seen the British version have the really stupid title. This is a different sort of Dracula movie, but I think different in a good way. Certainly worth one look for vamp fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE FINAL CLASSIC DRACULA
THE RETURN OF DRACULA (the film's actual title--CURSE was its television moniker) is the final classic B&W Dracula film. Despite the low budget, this eerie shocker recalls John Carradine's turn as Dracula in Universal's HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and HOUSE OF DRACULA. Francis Lederer is smoothly effective. The modern-day vampire hunters inspired Marvel Comics' TOMB OF DRACULA and the small-town setting is a chilling precursor to DARK SHADOWS. Best of all--the shock ending inspired Hammer Films' grisly finish to DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE and TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA. A worthy addition to any Universal Monster Classics collection. Kudos to MGM for reissuing this early United Artists gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dracula visits Mayberry
This United Artists release stars Francis Lederer as the Count coming to the United States using the identity of an artist he killed en route to visit his aunt. The setting is a small, folksy town with good people. The aunt, his female cousin and all around are fooled by the Count, whom while thought to be eccentric due to odd sleeping habits, maintains an aura of fascination due to his artistic temperment. Problems begin when the young son in the family comes home with the news that his pet cat has been killed. Then a female family friend is mysteriously anemic and proceeds to die. The Count has begun his rampage. Next, an investigator is killed by a dog (the Count). Suspicions grow as the female cousin discovers horrible paintings done by the Count showing her in a coffin. The female friend is staked (a brief color shot in a b/w movie-quite shocking for a 50's movie) and the Count is finally cornered in his cave when he tries for the last time to victimize the niece. Her boyfriend arrives to save her and drives the Count back with a cross, the latter loses his footing and well, you know, falls into a pit with a you know what at the bottom. I highly recommend this 50's flick with a good cast and excellent creepy atmosphere. Fangs for the memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best of the forgotten Dracula films
No one really remembers that there were Dracula movies in between the original epics by Universal and the onslaught of Hammer films. This is a low budget flick to be sure, but it really carves out a unique niche for the Count. The execution is not all I would wish it to be, especially in terms of the script, but I like the direction this film takes. It would have been interesting to see what could have happened if this had started a series that refined its elements as the Hammer films were able to do. ... Read more

To the distinctive yells of "Hi-Yo, Silver!" a phenomenon from the early days of television rides again. The Lone Ranger, starring Clayton Moore as the mysterious and righteous gunslinger and Jay Silverheels as his faithful sidekick Tonto, began on radio and made the transition to the small screen more than 50 years ago. In the three vintage programs on this tape the scripts are far from complicated, and the acting by Clayton Moore is at times absurdly awkward, yet the shows have an endearing innocent charm to them. Typically, the Lone Ranger and Tonto happen upon a situation about to turn bad, they intercede on the side of law and order with the Lone Ranger firing off some trademark silver bullets, and just as the happy citizens ask, "Who was that masked man?" the two heroes ride off in a cloud of dust. In the episode "Finders Keepers" the Lone Ranger encourages an outlaw to go straight and accept the consequences, and in "The Masked Rider" he bravely endeavors to infiltrate a gang of outlaws. In the concluding episode on this tape, "The Legend of the Old Timers," the Lone Ranger and Tonto enlist a posse of elderly cowhands to come to the rescue of a young man--played by DeForest Kelley, of later Star Trek fame--who is being swindled out of the ranch he's inherited. These shows are a campy and entertaining glimpse at what television offered way back in 1949. --Robert J. McNamara ... Read more

Hi-Yo Silver, Awaaaaaayyyy!

Are you old enough to recall being glued to your TV set watching the Lone Ranger? Are you even older, and remember listening on the radio? Are you younger, and always wondered what the older folks meant by Hi-Yo Silver?

Here's your chance to re-live those days, or live them again for the first time!

Nobody ever said the acting was stellar, but some of it ain't bad, and that's besides the point. This is the ORIGINAL Lone Ranger TV series, the first, the making of, and the masking of, the origin of the Masked Man who brought Law and Order to the Old West.

You didn't think it happened in New York City didja?

Thrill as the anticipated massacre occurs, feel for the Rangers, glory in the telling of the survivor's recovery in Tonto's care, see how he came to be called "Kemosabe", join with me now as the LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN!

Now how can you pass that up? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bronco - Shadow of Jesse James (1960)
Bronco, another classic Warner Bros western series, featured Ty Hardin as a ex-confederate army officer, and his often violent encounters with notorious outlaws. In this episode, Bronco Layne crosses paths with Jesse James, played by James Coburn, who would soon get his big acting break in "The Magnificent Seven". Also featuring Jeanne Cooper as the legendary outlawess Belle Star, and Richard Coogan as Cole Younger. Pretty violent, and bloodthirsty, this one, for its time. Definitely parental guidance, but not to be missed by lovers of westerns from the golden age of TV. Nicely packaged, crisp black and white print, and perfect Dolby-B sound. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BRONCO, Death of an Outlaw
Often fond childhood memories of TV series are spoilt by watching the TV re-runs. However this is not the case with this video of Warner Bros BRONCO. In this episode of BRONCO, Ty Hardin is the two-fisted ex-confederate Army Captain, now a ranch hand who befriends Billy the Kid.

This is family entertainment to be enjoyed by all.

Makes me long to see all of the 68 episodes which were made, between September12, 1958 and September 20, 1960.

Where is Ty Hardin (Orton Hungerford) today?

4-0 out of 5 stars Bronco - Death of an Outlaw (1960)
Another action-packed Bronco episode, in which the Confederate Captain Bronco Layne, tangles with Billy The Kid. Now settled and happily married, Billy has tried to put his past behind him. However, Pat Garrett, played by Rhodes Reason, of "White Hunter" fame is determined to bring him to book for his past crimes. Like many of these classic Warner Bros westerns, the appearance of veteran B-western stars is a feature, and Allan "Rocky" Lane plays a Sherriff in this one. A fair amount of violence and menacing behaviour in this series in general, if you have young children. Print is pristine black and white and sound is crisp Dolby B. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Third Episode
This episode is the third Lone Ranger episode, which is a continuation of the first two episodes. You can't buy just this tape and expect to know what's going on. To get the rest of the story, you need to get the first two episodes. There are two tapes that have the first three episodes: "Enter the Lone Ranger" and "Legend of the Lone Ranger." I have both of those, and I would recommend "Enter the Lone Ranger" because it has superior quality to "Legend of the Lone Ranger." However, "Legend of the Lone Ranger" does have one scene that for some reason "Enter the Lone Ranger" doesn't have, so maybe you'll want to get both. In any case, these tapes are definitely a must-have for any Lone Ranger fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Masked man does it again
George Seitz Jr. does it again. A classic Lone Ranger hit. Plenty of action on the part of the Lone Ranger and Tonto. A must have for all Lone Ranger fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi Yo Silver, Away!!!!!
This Lone Ranger tape contains three episodes: "The Tenderfeet," in which the Lone Ranger and Tonto thwart the plot of Hardrock Jones and Rusty Bates to steal the silver claim of Dick and Bob Larrabee, two brothers from the East; "High Heels," in which the Lone Ranger and Tonto uncover Monk's plot to buy up various ranches in an effort to control some of the railroad (disappearing ink plays a vital role in this episode); and "The Renegades," in which Tonto gets himself mistaken for a renegade Indian while trying to help his friend Chief Swift Eagle. This is a very enjoyable collection of episodes, something everyone who loves the Lone Ranger should get! ... Read more
