5-0 out of 5 stars Part lawyer, part detective
This series closely follows the feel and the sarcasm of the written stories. The stories are not in the same order as the book however each one stands alone. In a brief time there is posed a mystery or a problem and then some recognizable interaction with people that I am sure you can say you know someone like them. A little drama and it is finally wrapped up in short order. More than the stories that do not leave you hanging it is the comments that make the episode interesting to watch.

Volume two covers:

Episode 3. "Rumpole and the Sporting Life" Watch closely especially everyone's expression as the clues start from the first. A man (who everyone knows is obnoxious) is found dead. His wife is standing over him with a shot gun and says it was an accident. Rumpole has to defend her with a known hanging judge. Everyone has their own agenda including Mrs. Rumpole who wants to move to the country.

Episode 4. "Rumpole and the Blind Tasting" Once again watch expressions for unsaid clues. Rumpole delves into the world of wine tasting and collecting which assists him in a case of insurance fraud. In the process he gains an understudy (24 years old and female) which Mrs. Rumpole's friend suspects that Rumpole is studying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My applause for Rumpole.
Leo McKern star as a British barrister named Horace Rumpole. Somehow, John Mortimer (the author of the Rumpole stories) masterfully combines drama, humor, mystery and social commentary in a fascinating way that has now been carried over into the visual medium.

From the box:

Episode 9. Rumpole and the Female of the Species - Rumpole finds himself playing two roles at the same time: defending a small time thief charged with armed robbery in court while orchestrating a promotion behind the scenes for a young female barrister who thinks she's being discriminated against.

Episode 10. Rumpole and the Official Secret - Rumpole discovers that things aren't always what they seem as he defends an eccentric Defense Ministry clerk accused of leaking secrets to the press and confronts his own wife about a visitor who may or may not be part of a terrorist organization. ... Before there was Quincy and The Practice, there was Rumpole. Rumpole of the Bailey is, quite simply, one of the best television series ever and has served as a model for all law dramas that followed it. Edgy and satirical, Rumpole is based on John Mortimer's books of the same name. A determined and committed criminal defense barrister at the Old Bailey, or criminal court (whose clients have included three generations of the Timson family, among others), the antihero Rumpole is portrayed by esteemed actor Leo McKern. As champion of the downtrodden, the self-righteous Rumpole finds himself again and again in trouble variously with his wife Hilda, his peers, the head of chambers, and judges, to name but a few. A connoisseur of Wordsworth, cigars, and cheap liquor, McKern's usually disheveled Rumpole belies the character's dry sense of humor and astute skill as a barrister. The upwardly mobile Hilda is played by Peggy Thorpe-Bates, known for her Miss Toliver in Alcatraz Island (1933), and Justice Sir Guthrie Fetherston is played by Peter Bowles, known for his Richard DeVere in TV's To the Manor Born.

Volume 18 features two episodes. First, in "Rumpole and the Quacks," Rumpole battles the formidable Phillida in court to defend his doctor, accused of sexually molesting a patient. Next, in "Rumpole for the Prosecution," Rumpole takes on a rare role as prosecutor to investigate a policeman who may not have been properly charged for murdering a girl.

Typical of British drama, production values are low while the caliber of script-writing and acting is unsurpassed. A rare example of a television serial that is as appealing and engaging after watching it 10 times as it was the first. --Erik Macki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Charming/Bittersweet Tale
Although this film pales in comparison to the beautiful play from which it was based, this is still nonetheless worth watching. Joan Plowtwright is excellent as the mother, while the movie is commanded by a talented British ensemble. The story is often funny, poignant, and heartbreaking as it tells the wonderful story of one family's strength to endure through hardship. Unlike many pictures that have dealt with WWII, "Nightingale" is extremely effective as it deals with the war on a very personal and intimate basis. The overall feeling this movie leaves on the viewer is an odd but wonderful combination of peace, sadness, and hope. Therefore, I give "And A Nightingale Sang" five stars without reservation! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Something Went Right
Rodney Dangerfield played host to seven comedians, filmed live at Dangerfield's nightclub in New York City. Lenny Clarke, who co-starred with Dennis Leary in the TV series The Job, goes over well with the crowd. The notorious Andrew Dice Clay has never been funnier, especially when he does his off-color nursery rhymes. Dom Irrera, who played a prop comedian in an episode of Seinfeld, teaches Italians the finer points of being Italian. Rodney always had an eye for comedic talent, and all of the stand-up comedians in this video range from very funny to absolutely hilarious.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Stand-up I've ever seen!

Volume Three covers:

Episode 4. "Rumpole's Last Case" As usual several overlapping stories interacts as Rumpole may even over react. Mr. Rumpole has parlayed a two pound bet into 100 pounds. Strange his wife also spends that amount on a new rug. Well anyway he gets a tip from his client that is in for burglary and possible carrying a gun. Why not 100 to 30000 and hence his last Case. Going out in stile he lets everyone know what he thinks including the judge.

Episode 5. "Rumpole and the Judge's Elbow" A judge has a bit of tennis elbow. Doctor's advice does not seem to be working so on other advice he visits and alternative clinic (massage parlor). Some one paid with a credit card. And guess who gets to defend a massage parlor owner and rummage through credit card receipts? Yep Rumpole for some reason is offered the Deputy Circuit Judge.

A note on the side you will recognize many of the actors from both Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers movies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Double Vision: What A Waste
This horrible movie isn't worth renting. It's got a weird plot that goes nowhere, horrible acting and a bad ending. The slow-motion stuff and bad voice overs are just typical melodramitic moments in this piece.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
And when I say a waste of time I mean a COMPLETE waste of time. No plot, terrible story, bad acting and a horrible horrible ending, this movie was laughably bad, truly horrifying it was so stupid. Please whatever you do, whatever it takes, listen to me, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME on this awful piece of crap. You will be extremely disappointed. This is based on a Mary Higgin's Clark story, but it is nothing like the one she has written. You will be bored and confused. STAY AWAY. I really regret wasting 13 bucks on this shit, so imagine if you waste 90...

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible...
absolutely bad...after seeing the terrific adaption of 'Cry in the Night' based on the novel by the same author, I expected this film to not only equal it, but surpass it due to the better story line...but all the film succeded in doing was boring me to death and leaving my mouth wide open in shock and disbelief at how a movie could be so bad!

2-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money...
'Double Vision' is double terrible...the film comes off to a good start and the plot is an intriguing one I must admit...but just when you think that the story is going somewhere, it goes nowhere...The film is confusing and the ending did not make any sense at all....trust me you will not be surprised....the only thing I had to recommend this film was the intriguing plot, but even that went nowhere and I was so disappointed, especially since this is a Mary Higgins Clark story....totally pointless adaption which could have worked at the hands of a capable writer...a remake would be appreciated....a worthy Clark adaption would be "A Cry in the Night", which alos contains a badly executed ending, but a great story and actual suspense....that one gets 4 stars so check it out instead... ... Horace Rumpole, the scourge of the Old Bailey, in top form in these two outstanding stories. Wittily written scripts peppered with Rumpole's elegant renditions of Wordsworth make the stories a never ending source of amusement. 5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and inviting!!!
With Vol. 1 & 2 in my video library, I have become a true fan of this series. The beautiful landscape of Scotland has arrested my heart. We are invited into the lives of modern day Scottish royalty, with all of the current life challenges, showing a wounded son who returns to his family home to rescue them out of financial problems; the development of his relationships with the people of the community in which he has become Laird (much like being an English Lord), a role he had not planned to play; the separation from his newly opened restaurant business in London and his prior love relationship; restoration of the father-son dynamic; and his search to find ways to restoring financial solvency; and the development of feelings for another, are challenges that have become grist for the success of this series.

I am currently on the waiting list for Vol. 3 to come out in 2003, and I can hardly wait until that anticipated day when the postman arrives with the package. If you like stunning scenery; the terseness of the human dynamic; and the sense of a new horizen, I strongly suggest that you begin to add Monarch of the Glen to your video library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Billington saves it
Culled from the Jilly Cooper novel of the same name, "The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous" left me wanting to read the book again -- it's far better. Although Stephen Billington is a perfect choice as Lysander, I suppose it's just impossible to condense 700 or so pages into 3 "episodes" as this video does and maintain a true sense of the original story. There was obviously a lot cut out, both in terms of scenes and characters, from the book. Most irritatingly, Lysander is now a tennis pro instead of the polo-playing, basically career-less individual he is in the novel. I can't imagine enjoying this film if you aren't a huge Jilly Cooper fan -- I would find it very confusing had I not read the book first. ... Read more
