2-0 out of 5 stars Shoddy rip-off of the book series
The book series by John Norman made much use of sexual and erotic images of muscular dominating men and subserviant women - the kind of world most men long for. Unfortunately, the movie producers decided to forego all that and just use the name "Gor" and wrap it up in a very bad plot. It looks like the screenwriter tried to follow the basic plot of the books - the slavery and class roles of the characters are evident - but somewhere along the lines the producers mucked everything up with Christian "morals" (no nudity, little violence) and toned down Norman's statement about society. The result was a waste of a movie that once had potential.

My advice: read the books and hope the producers of the next film get it right.

2-0 out of 5 stars What else would one expect of Hollywood?
The movie "Gor" is disappointing for a variety of reasons. First, it departs from the basic premise of the Gor books, male dominance and female submission. The depiction of Marlenus as an old man, and his wayward daughter Talena as a muscular and capable swordswoman, is probably the most incongruous part of the entire movie. In fact, this one depiction is so improbable that it is reminiscent of St. Joan d'Arc as a "battling, bodacious babe" in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure". Add to this mischaracterization a very skinny, hardly physically impressive "Tarl Cabot" (described elsewhere in the Gor series as "the greatest swordsman on Gor") and one has to conclude that the screenwriters adopted from the books only a few elements: 1) a barbarian world; 2) scantily clad (though not properly submissive) females; 3) some of the characters (but the only one I found believable per the Gorean series was that of Sorbus--who is set here in the desert, but was in reality a pirate captain of humid, tropical Port Kar, whom Cabot slew over a tavern maid when he arrived in Port Kar), and 4) swordplay. This attempt was highly disappointing, in terms of both masculine and feminine depictions. The movie's plot itself had nothing to do with Gor.

John Norman's world is unique to his own vision, and the stale and tacky devices of Hollywood's hack scriptwriters--most of whom are politically correct, and who think in terms of audience stereotypes--are hardly equal to creating even a shadow of the master's vision. I am holding out for a first-rate, Lord-of-the-Rings-type recreation of Gor by Hollywood, replete with Kurii, slave girls serving in slave strips and strings, and a cast of male characters true to Gorean type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super B ... won't there ever be a DVD
Who cares that this is a major B movie with a budget of a small college class ... Tarl Cabot is hot. But all that aside, it's a movie you watch when you just don't care to think ... I've worn my vhs tape out, I've watched it so many times. I wish they would bring it out in DVD. I give it 5 stars because Tarl is so hot. But I have Outlaw of Gor ... I didn't care much for it, not enough Tarl ... he's the only reason for watching the movie. If I had an idea boyfriend ... it would be him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorean Fan for a long long time
Ok. I'll admit to it. It is hardly anything like the book. There are several things to note that is different. The way the Cities were formed, different, Koroba, Ar (which really wasn't in there as the bad guy's city , which is a shame). There were no Tarns (which is one of the reason I gave it only 4 stars). There was no talking spider, which is a bit of a shame for its corny appeal.

But...

In all honestly. Its not really that bad. For a campy film that was made in the 1980s, its not really that bad. I quite enjoyed myself watching the film, and then the next film, Outlaw of Gor. Yes, neither are like the books of Gor, but they give an almost campy twist to the sometimes all to serious conciderations of the stories of Gor.

The movie takes some of the basic considerations of what it means to be Gor, and turns it into an interesting romp into an alternate storyline. For example, I thought the makers of the movie had a splinded dance with kajira's in the bad guy's fortress. I also thought the cat fight between the main woman Talena (yes the same main woman as the book but now different) and a slave girl.

I mean yes I realize it is cheesy. But we all know, by seeing films like Evil Dead I-III, April Fools Day, Conan the Destroyer (and who can tell me that Conan the Destroyer was REALLY what Robert E. Howard had in mind LOL), we can truly appreciate cheesiness.

Gor is a nice film to just sit back and watch if you've had a hard day at work or college. Its something to watch when you dont want to have something to truly think over so much that you get a headache.

I really suggest that you get it. Its really enjoyable.

By the way. I would like to make one point. Yes I do enjoy the film, but yes also...I am a true fan of John Norman. I have read his books, I have them all including Witness of Gor. I believe in the lifestyle of Gor as well, as I am a Dom rt as a Gorean Master (but no I dont go around dressed in scarlet and sword as that might cause some problems at the office LOL).

2-0 out of 5 stars I should have been arrested!
I should have been arrested for spending while stupid; bad costuming, bad sets, cheap film. Did they just drive out to Baja(or wherever) and film in the sand on the weekend? The book author John Norman must have really needed money to sell his story to this studio. Incidentally, they must have had a film budget of a dollar ninety-eight. The saving grace was some good acting (stressing some) and the beautiful women. Yes I've seen the second one too! See my review in "Outlaw of Gor". My wife tells me I write with an acid pen, well see the movie and find out. But RENT don't BUY! ... Read more

He tells all th ekids they need to get rid of all the adults...and they listen. Soon, her husband finds her in the corn field where the final showcase is and saves her and they rescue Sarah and her older brother Job they are the 2 kids that tried to help thier sibling escape) Its a pretty freaky movie. When the kids turn 19, they get a knife and engrave the star of the devil thing on thier chest and pass around the little blood dish to the other kids and give thierselves up to "he who walks behind the rows" good movie though, the storey stinked though in "Night Shift".

2-0 out of 5 stars It just doesn't do much
A chef can have a table full of fine ingedients to make a perfect soup but, if the chef forgets one ingredient (like salt) or undercooks the soup or adds something that doesn't belong (like sugar) or puts too much water in the stock, you end up with a soup that just doesn't cut the mustard. There is enough talent in the cast of "Children of the Corn" and a good enough story (thanks to the Stephen King story it's based on) for this to have been a horror classic. I know it spawned a sequel and I know it has a cult following, but this movie just didn't scare me, or even interest me that much. Too much water? Sugar added? Undercooked? No salt? Perhaps, all of the above.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lame and offensive, but a guilty pleasure
Pro:
-Interesting story idea, fairly well executed.
-Capably acted.
-Cult-movie "camp" factor.
-A little creepy.
-You'll remember it.

Con:
-Wears out its welcome; a little boring.
-Ridiculous "monster." (You'll be reminded of "Caddyshack")
-A bit overacted at times.
-Children slitting each other's throats.
-You'll remember it.

Creepy, enjoyable fun? Or offensive crap? You be the judge!

2-0 out of 5 stars kind of a bore...
yea yea yea its a cult classic and very memorable...but why...stephen king is an amazing writer, but this is weak...its not very suspensful, not very well acted, the score tho is probably the best ive ever heard from a horror movie, but the story line is slow and at times very boring. And a lot of the characters are really annoying i mean, they make you want to take a gun to your TV annoying! Isaac, i wanted to slaughter that high pitched, midget friend of Dorothy, always complaining and going on! and malachae or w/e his name is...the dood with the red mullet and horse jaw....he annoyed me more than isaac...and whats with the stupid ending? the visual looks sooooo bad and soooo stupid! this movie as a whole just makes me mad....ok im changing the rating from a 3 to a 2. Only reasons its getting 2 stars is cuz the music is awesome and its by stephen king....other than that...its not worth it ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Action-Comedy !
I rated this a "4" because my criteria
in judging a movie are adjusted to its
genre; and as an action-comedy I felt it
approached a Harrison Ford type comedy,
which I rate as "5"

Acting was realistic, photography great,
and we even got a bit of sermonizing
(how a fighter's discipline works against
his ability to be confidential about his
feelings).

Deborah Maria Moore was a nice bit of
frosting on the cake.

If you're not jaded as a movie critic,
and like light comedy and air force action
see this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE IN THE WORLD IS KIM RICHARDS?
I must have seen this movie over fifty times since I was a kid. From the first time I watched Tuff Turf it was my favorite movie. I used to think that Kim Richards was the hottest woman I ever seen, but then again I was only a kid right? Wrong!!! I really haven't watched this movie in a while, mostly because my vhs copy was badly worn out, but since I got the dvd I have watched it a couple times. Kim is still as beautiful to me as she was when I was 15 years younger. She is definatly the perfect woman, I just wish I could see what she looks like now-a-days. I know, I'm rambling. I really don't have much to say about the movie or how great it is because the other reviewers all ready did that. Just a quick priase to James Spader and Robert Downey, they both were excellent in the film along with the rest of the cast. If anybody has seen Kim Richards in anything lately, please write a little note in a review here, and bee-bop, keep your eyes open for that rain from heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last this movie gets the recognition it deserves.
I almost made a hole in the roof when I saw that this movie is coming out on DVD format. It is my favorite movie of the eighties decade, and quite possibly of all time, heck I even have a webpage dedicated to it. This is truly an obscure and wrongfully forgotten gem. Amidst all those 80's 'Brat Pack' movies, out came this unique and very different movie, which, unfortunately, got lost in the shuffle and was quickly forgoten by many. It deals with 'rebel-without-applause' Morgan (James Spader) who has to get used to a new way of life, new neighborhood, and new 'friends', so to speak. Not only does he anger the local thugs, but he falls hard for the leader's girlfriend Frankie (Kim Richards). Nick (Paul Mones)has the taste of blood in his mouth and he won't give Morgan the tinsiest break. Meanwhile, Morgan befriends the class clown, Jimmy (Robert Downey jr) and Jimmy invites his new pal to see him play that night. A very special appeareance by punk rocker/poet/writer/performing artist Jim Carroll as the 'leader' of the band Jimmy plays with. (Carroll, sans weird make-up...a friend of his told me that's the only performance of his in a movie he enjoys, he even asked for the VHS copy as a birthday gift, I helped my friend get it for him, yay)Things keep getting worse for poor Morgan, leading up to a tense climax and ending in a bitter, bloody finale, where they will truly show who's the toughest of the turf. This movie is for all Spader/Downey/Richards/Carroll fans and for those who have gone through the whole standard list of 'teenie' 80's movies and want something different, I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hindsight is 20/20, People!
I used to love this movie back in the 80's when I was younger and easier to please. Ooh, James Spader was so cu-ute, so I overlooked the obvious until time made me all too aware of my transgressions. Now, I'm not Catholic, but I think you get put into purgatory for liking movies like this no matter what your background is.

I'm being as honest in all my reviews as I possibly can, so let me tell you what changed my mind. Here's my list of 8 simple reasons for avoiding this movie:

1. Most of us are 20 years older now. Go watch the Joy Luck Club.
2. Why is it that Nick listens to Frankie when she tells him to lay off, or else, when he tries to start something with her, yet later he's beating her to a pulp?
3. Awful love scene between James Spader and Kim Richards. Yes, she has pretty long hair. Too bad she has no lips and no chest. She looks like she did when she played Prudence in Nanny and the Professor, only taller!
4. Everybody in my high school danced like a cast member of Fame too. Yeah, right.
5. Bad music soundtrack. Jim Carroll and Jack Mack and the Heart Attack?
6. Jim Carroll, the actor.
7. The unbelievable plot.
8. The most unforgivable and insulting point: stupid dialogue! "I'm not tolerating any of your rooftop rock concerts" is uttered to James Spader's character by the high school principal. What is a "rooftop rock concert?" Oh, yeah, something cool sounding to say that's really not.
In another part of the movie, Spader's character asks Robert Downey Jr.'s character why he didn't join a gang like his older brother. Out of Downey's mouth comes, "My mom wouldn't let me." Even when I liked this movie it always made me laugh. Since when do you ask your mommy for permission to join a gang?

I must admit, if it was on TV at some point, I'm not so sure I wouldn't watch it. Everyone loves a train wreck and this movie chugs nonstop toward its impending doom with amazing velocity. Jack Mack and the Heart Attack singing "T-U-F-F, You're So Tuff" after Frankie just had the crap beaten out of her by Nick is pretty sad. Oh, well, the film's not a total loss. It reminds you of how stupid we all used to look so you avoid repeating the same offense and...well, Kim Richards could dance. One thing is definitely for sure; there's a reason James Spader never became a "singer."

5-0 out of 5 stars Tuff Turf - VHS
This is an excellent movie and I recommended it because it is the only know time you're going to see Kim Richards' breasts. I personally have a friend who was part of the production company and the "breast" scene was shot both by Kim and a body double. She made the decision at the very end not to use the double, so those are her breasts you're are looking at. Keep in mind that it's the only revealing scene she has - and is very brief. The dance sequence she does is excellent and was included as part of an MTV video. Tuff Turf aired on cable many many years ago and is a must own for any Kim Richards fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Great Film"
You'll love this movie, Kim Richards & James Spader dazzle the screen. I loved the 80's and this movie definitely defines a era. There's action, drama, romance and the good guy gets the girl. James Spader is gorgeous and the beautiful Kim Richards is at her best. I sure hope she goes back to making movies. Own this film for your collection it's waaaay cool!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mind Candy
Caught this movie the other night on one of the movie channels, I pretty much fell in love with Kathy Long. The movie is interesting, little bits and pieces of a whole lot of other stuff as mentioned in the above reviews, but her character is very much like "The Man with No Name" Clint Eastwood features, with martial arts thrown in. Supporting cast is adequate to strong (I particularly liked Ginger Lynn, it's the first movie I've ever seen her in with her clothes on) and the biker gang was convincingly evil, reminiscent of the "Wild Angels". The landscape reminded me a bit of Mad Max. No big surprises here, Kathy dispatches the bad guys with relatively grusome ease, and looks great while doing it. I wish the ending would have been a little more definite on her identity, but you can't have everything. Worth watching, definitely not a chick flick.

2-0 out of 5 stars I Only Saw Part of This Film...
...but the weird part is that, based on the last third or so, it was inspired heavily by Sergio Leone's brilliant "Once Upon a Time in the West" (which you ought to check out) -- in just the part i saw i caught at least four or five references to the soundtrac from that film, particularly the wailing harmonica phrase that cued the entrances of the Mysterious Avenger and the almost-identical endtheme with soaring wordless soprano vocals as she rides away. ((They also used a shot of Claudia Cardinale's theme from "OUaTitW" for the younger girl)).

Apparently the main bad guy has no idea why this girl is hunting him down, but -- again as in the Leone -- as he dies he finally sees a flashback that gives it to him.

I'm going to have to try to catch the whole thing and see just how closely it actually resembloes the Leone...

UPDATE AS OF 8/23/2001:

I have seen the whole film. It is, indeed, basically an uncredited remake of "Once Upon a Time in the West", with added elements highly reminiscent of "High Plains Drifter"

Truly, truly bizree.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Kathy Long vehicle. No threat at the Oscars
I'd watch Kathy Long in anything she cares to take the time to make. OK, she's no acting threat to Geena Davis or Meryl Streep, but she did her best and it wasn't bad. Certainly no one can fault her performance of her martial art. She kicks some serious ass on the bad guys and does it beautifully! I don't know that Long exceeds the skill of Cynthia Rothrock, but she's certainly an equal. You've gotta love the scene where Long mirror-images the Tai-Chi kata being done by Angel (Andrew Divoff).

The only other film in which I believe Ms. Long has appeared in a starring role is "Knights" with Kris Kristofferson, although she did appear in the Catwoman costume, standing in for Michelle Pfeiffer on the very physical stunts in "Batman Returns". I'd certainly make a point of watching more if she'd only make 'em.

Ginger Lynn Allen didn't do badly in this one, either, playing Sally, the hardware store owner. Again, no serious threat to the Oscar nominees, but considering her background in porn films (aka "Ginger Lynn") she did OK. It's a nice change from stuff like "Vice Academy I, II, III and/or whatever", essentially soft-porn with dialogue.

I have a copy of this movie taped from a TV broadcast that's not great. I'd like to buy a better one but not at this price. Get the price down to something reasonable and I'll be first in line.

(Gotta do something with that photo of the box; the clothing on that model is nothing like Long's gear in the film, and she doesn't even resemble Long that much. She never had a shotgun, either, that was Angel's weapon.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Great look and setting, average acting.
This movie followed after The Crow came to theaters. There is a reference to "The Stranger", being an avatar brought back by a Crow. There are a couple of crows that appear throughout the movie when she is around, giving you the impression that she is an avatar brought back through a crow. The desert setting and western style soundtrack are great. They were successful in re-creating an old western town set in the 1990's. The acting is something to be desired. Kathy Long looks great, and kicks even better (a 5 time world champion kickboxer), but her acting is not the greatest. They pretty much have her hissing oneline dialogue. However, she has a very innocent/sexy look about her that you can't help but appreciate. Unlike other "come back from the dead" stories, she has no weakness, and dispatches the bad guys without hardly messing up her golden hair. But this is ok. Its nice for a change to see someone who can kick butt without having a kryptonite-like weakness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kathy Long is Awsom!
Kind of a modern day "High Plains Drifter" Long never says who she is but you get the impression that she's the murdered girl come back to get revenge. What Long lacks in acting ability she makes up for in martial arts skills. Perfect location for this story to unfold. Long has this sly sexiness about her that just keeps you glued to the screen. I'd watch her over Cynthia Rothrock any day! ... Read more

Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Young
I saw this movie years ago and something about this movie made me feel like I was in it. I love the story line. Yes it is a sterotype of "surfers" but it is entertaining and that is enough to draw you to the movie. I am now searching to buy this movie. I can't seem to locate this movie. "80s" movies you gotta love them.

3-0 out of 5 stars great scenery, good storyline, poor dialogue
I had a hard time locating this movie on video, but I finally found it. I was appalled by the dialogue. I'm sure Californians don't like being stereotyped in those roles. Overall, it was entertaining with a good ending.

3-0 out of 5 stars A classic beach flick!
This is not a movie to take seriously, but it is great to watch 10 years later while remembering what it was like to dream of being a beach bum for the rest of your life. Even though the acting is weak and the surf footage is sub-par, it will still entertain you after all these years.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good rental
I actually didn't mind this movie at all. I've actually seen it a few times.

It's a good movie to watch if it comes on a network on a Saturday afternoon... ...

Own this film for your collection it's waaaay cool!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very intriguing movie of murder and blackmail
Made for telly film, so judge it by those standards, and under those conditions, you have a nifty neo-noir film. Former model Helen really detests DH, Ben, only Ben has big stacks of money, and divorce would mean losing the charge cards and fancy life style she adores. Wanting her cake and eat it, too, she and her brother-in-law, arrange to have him kidnapped, so they can get the money - 5 Million - and freedom.

Things start to go out of control when FBI Agents Dillon and Mallis manager to trace a phone call, and storm the house to rescue Ben. Something goes wrong - a big fire breaks out and hostage, hired killers and FBI Agent are killed. They have their suspicions about the whole thing, feeling the wife and brother-in-law were behind it for the ransom. But they cannot prove anything, so the case is dropped.

Soon, Helen begins to get phone calls from the dead husband. Or is he dead? Nifty plot twists keep this interesting with a powerhouse cast of Bo Derek, Jack Scalia, John Savage, Dorian Harewood, David McCallum, and Ian Ogilvy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining B thriller
Helen and her brother-in-law, David, kidnaps Helen's husband Ben, to get the ransom money from his company. But things don't go as planned and Ben and an FBI agent gets killed. Afterwards, the agent's partner and Helen become friends and, before long, also lovers. But strange things start to happen. Is Ben still alive? Does David have plans of his own? Something is wrong...

This is a grade B thriller made for TV. While not the best movie in the world (I don't think anyone expected it to be), it does its job - to entertain, and does it quite well. It is an entertaining movie with just enough twists in the plot to make it interesting. At least worth renting. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Action-Comedy !
I rated this a "4" because my criteria
in judging a movie are adjusted to its
genre; and as an action-comedy I felt it
approached a Harrison Ford type comedy,
which I rate as "5"

Acting was realistic, photography great,
and we even got a bit of sermonizing
(how a fighter's discipline works against
his ability to be confidential about his
feelings).

Deborah Maria Moore was a nice bit of
frosting on the cake.

If you're not jaded as a movie critic,
and like light comedy and air force action
see this one! ... Read more
