The middle film in George Lucas's enormously popular Star Wars science fiction trilogy is a darker, more somber entry, considered by many fans as the best in the series. Gone is the jaunty swashbuckling of the first film; the rebellion led by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) suffers before the superior forces of the Empire, young hero Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) faces his first defeats as he attempts to harness the Force under the tutelage of Jedi master Yoda (voiced by Frank Oz), and cocky Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is betrayed by former ally Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams). In the tradition of the great serials, this film is left with a hefty cliffhanger. The leap in special effects technology in the three years since Star Wars results in an amazing array of effects, including a breathtaking chase through an asteroid field and a dazzling, utopian Cloud City, where Luke faces the black-clad villain Darth Vader (David Prowse, voice of James Earl Jones) in a futuristic sword fight and learns the secret of his Jedi father. Veteran director Irvin Kershner (The Eyes of Laura Mars, Never Say Never Again) took the directorial reins from creator and producer Lucas and invested the light-speed adventure with deeper characters and a more emphatic sense of danger. The special edition expands Luke's encounter with the Abominable Snowman-esque wampa and establishes the creature as a tangibly more terrifying beast, in addition to refining many of the existing effects. The trilogy is concluded in The Return of the Jedi. --Sean Axmaker ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Star Wars: Episode V
I've watched all the Star Wars movies scores of times, and they are all spectacular with a great story, great action, and great characters (all with the beautiful music of John Williams).

The Empire Strikes Back, the middle story of the original trilogy, is probably one of my favorites (it's so hard to pick one!). The characters really come out in this episode, and you can't help but enjoy watching this film. Watch the exciting battle on the ice planet Hoth, the budding romance between the Princess Leia and the "scoundrel" Han Solo. See the breathtaking Cloud City, the murky swamps of Dagobah. Listen to the tutelage of wise Yoda, the fantastic musical score. And it all leads up to the critical battle between Luke and Darth, in which Skywalker makes his greatest mistake and Vader's dark secret is revealed.

Definitely the darkest of the trilogy, ESB leaves the viewer wanting more. We want to see the fate of Han Solo, how Luke reacts to startling news, and the further efforts of the Rebel Alliance ~ even if we've already seen the trilogy dozens of times. Watch this movie for a great story in a wonder-filled world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Empire returns in the greatest sequel of all time.
The Empire returns with a vengeance in the sequel to legendary film: Star Wars, A New Hope. This is one of the few movies that has lived up to it's predecessor in the history of motion pictures. The Empire Strikes back has proven once again that George Lucas' Star Wars universe is once of the finest conceived tomes in all of film lore. In this installment we find our heroes facing an Empire freshly stung from the defeat of their dreaded Death Star, and determined to annihilate the rebellion once and for all. Darth Vader has become obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker. He has searched the end of the galaxy and finally finds him and the rebellion on the ice planet of Hoth. There are many great scenes in this movie that are downright breathtaking. My favorite scene in this movie happens to be my favorite moment in almost any movie. The Asteroid chase where the Millenium Falcon, captained by Han Solo fly's into an asteroid belt to avoid the pursuing imperial Tie Fighters. I consider this not only to be the best action scenes of film history, it is also perfectly scored by John Williams. The perfect flow of this movie evolves from George Lucas' excellent writing and Lawrence Kasdan's direction. Another pivotal point in the Star Wars saga plays out as Obi Wan Kenobi's spirit directs our hero, Luke Skywalker, to seek out the one remaining Jedi Master on a swamp world called Dagobah. When Luke finally encounters Yoda he begins a journey whose conclusion is uncertain. Luke is pulled away from Dagobah and led to a cloud city where he finally confronts the dreaded Dark Lord of Sith: Darth Vader. I remember the entire theater trembling as Vader attempts to turn Luke to the dark side of the force. This movie is packed with action, adventure, romance and a shocking revelation that left everyone wondering who Luke Skywalker's father really was for the three years between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. If you are looking to purchase a legendary movie, The Empire Strikes back does NOT disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series
Carrie Fisher once stated the SW series is like ice cream (nice simile). All being good, however ESB being the best flavor. I agree with her statement.

My dissertation, lol,on the film is near the final when Vader tells Luke that he is the father. On a Freudian level, this could be called the Oedipus complex theory with Luke deciding to not join his father. I presume Luke was apprehensive to join in because he believed it was a confidence game that would result in his own termination/castration. Just a speculative theory.
No matter what, enjoy this wonderful work.

When ESB was released in 1997 I had a standing date to go see it on the big screen. Way back in 1980, I remember being on summer vacation and going to see it for the first time. When the movie ended, I could not believe that we (the audience) were left hanging on a cliff for the next 3 years. Talk about tease, lol.......:)

5-0 out of 5 stars the best film of the greatest sci-fi series ever.
the empire stikes back is one of those rare films that are actually better than the first. although some fans of the original may find this flim not as fun as the first and find some of the middle of the film (luke and yoda on degaboh...han,leia,etc. hiding from vader in the asteroid)a sleeper, the total content of the film overcomes this. the story is awsome with plot twists and turns, and the introduction of new characters to the star wars universe as well as the in-depth development and growth of the originals adds to this great story.ivan kershner's ominous dark tone adds a psychological beauty to this film and is probobly the most intelligent of the star wars films. i guarentee this will be one of the best films you'll see so if you haven't i highly recommend picking it up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great comedic discovery.....
Not too many people have heard of the 1967 film "The Flim Flam Man," and that's too bad for them. I have owned this lovely valentine of a movie for several years, and have always appreciated its comedic/dramatic allure. Everything clicks perfectly in this old fashioned film, from its authentic locations (this movie was filmed in small town Kentucky) to a wonderful musical score by Jerry Goldsmith.

I love George C. Scott's rip-snorting performance as a train-hopping con-man whose legend precedes him. He literally stumbles upon a military AWOL drifter in Michael Sarrazin, and the unlikely pair join forces to make a little cash. Camping in abandoned railroad cars, hiking cross country and stealing a car or two, this colorful pair eventually has the county police hot on their tails. Along the way, Sarrazin falls in love with the mayor's daughter, Slim Pickens loses his paycheck (great scene) and Scott samples a bit of the local moonshine.

"The Flim Flam Man" is aided by a cast of extraordinary character actors, including Harry Morgan, Jack Albertson, Strother Martin, Albert Salmi and Pickens. Morgan, as the local sheriff, is especially funny in a grand slapstick role. But director Irvin Kershner has done an excellent job in balancing comedy, drama and romance with skilled ease. It's the quieter moments in "The Flim Flam Man" that I truly admire, such as the scene when Scott reminisces about the purple-eyed girl he once loved in Missouri, or when Sarrazin discusses his dreams of the future with Sue Lyon.

This is such a charming movie, that each time I watch it I'm sad to see it end. "The Film Flam Man" transports us to a dreamy Southern land, colorful and optimistic, train whistles in the background, vibrant town squares, campfires beneath railroad bridges, bustling general stores. While this film was made in 1967, the small town ambiance of "The Flim Flam Man" harkens back to a time 30-40 years prior. It's a romantic recreation, in some ways a tender tribute to a past way of life. I always find the final image, of the abandoned bicycle resting at the railroad crossing, to be haunting, with Scott's character having disappeared to rustic parts unknown. I would love to join him on his journey.

For those anacquainted, "The Flim Flam Man" is a great discovery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget Patton - give me Mordecai!
As loveable rogue Mordecai Jones, George C. Scott endures bad community theatre make-up and inhales acres of gorgeous Southern scenery in this picaresque crowd-pleaser about a veteran con-man and his reluctant apprentice (Michael Sarrazin). Three years shy of the career-defining "Patton," Scott clearly relished the chance to let his hair down amid "Flim-Flam Man's" feel-good flood of chicanery, slapstick and car chases (this one has a couple of beauts). Sarrazin, a good actor who unfortunately never found his big break-out role, is fine as Curley, an Army deserter whose talent for larceny is undermined by a stubborn streak of honesty. Flaxen-haired beauty Sue Lyon, who epitomized, in the Sixties, the image of the girl you wished lived next door, is wholesomely alluring as Sarazzin's love interest. Rounding out the cast is a dizzying assemblage of fun character actors - Harry Morgan, Strother Martin, Alice Ghostley, Slim Pickens, Jack Albertson, Albert Salmi - whose presence makes for a lively game of "Name That Second Banana."

An unassuming curio from the same year (1967) as the iconoclastic "Bonnie and Clyde," "The Flim-Flam Man" is good-looking, well-acted, imaginatively directed (by Irvin Kershner, who later skippered "The Empire Strikes Back"), and wildly successful at its sole purpose: to entertain. Hollywood used to excel at this brand of lightsome fare. Today, hopelessly vulgarized and dumbed-down, and hell-bent on dragging the audience down to its level, Tinseltown wouldn't know where to begin to make a flick like this. That's everybody's loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD Please
This movie is truly a classic. Very touching and funny is George C. Scott as Mordecai "the flim flam man". This could be classified as a road picture as Scott and Michael Sarrison an army deserter during the Vietnam War, go from town to town pulling scams on hicks who are also trying to get something for nothing. Henry Morgan is very funny as the sheriff chasing them. Where is the DVD for this movie. Sue Lyon who was a hottie in the 1960's plays the love interest of Sarrison, and daughter of Henry Morgan. Morgan starts out chasing a moonshiner named Dootle whom he thinks made his last escape by using an "anphobibias" vehicle. To not like this movie means you are humorless, there is a great car chase even by todays standards.

5-0 out of 5 stars George C.'s favorite
A light comedy with some meaningful undertones. It was also one of George C. Scott's favorite roles. Filmed in beautiful central Kentucky in the early fall of 1966, this movie is somewhat dated in it's meanderings, but its value focus is as pertinent today as then. A can't miss for any George C. Scott fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Actor Does Comedy--Very Well, Thank You!
Most of us probably think of George C. Scott and think "Patton." In this movie he plays a character about as far removed from General George as you can get. Mordecai Jones is a con artist with a mission: to teach people (by "flim-flamming" them) not to give in to "greed and fourteen-karat ignorance." Jason "Curly" Treadaway, a farmboy who has deserted the Army after breaking the jaw of a mouthy Yankee sergeant, comes to his aid when he's thrown off a train. Since both are broke, Mordecai suggests that Curly shill for him long enough to accumulate a small stake. From this springs a partnership in which Curly, to his dismay, discovers he has a real gift for dishonest dealings. Tormented by conscience and shattered illusions, he still originates a plan to escape when the pair are finally run down and arrested--and then comes up with an even more audacious one to get Jones out, because, as he tells the girl he's fallen in love with, "he's my *partner*, and that means somethin'."

This movie lacks the slapstick that often characterizes comedy; there's a wild car chase (Jones and Curly in a convertible Mordecai has "borrowed," pursued by the local sheriff, turning their chariot into a "ramblin' wreck" and destroying a considerable portion of the town of Clayton in the process), but most of the film concentrates on Mordecai's schemes--everything from three-card monte and punchboards through the Pigeon Drop to an elaborate masquerade in which he manages to swap a truckload of moonshine for a mound of assorted merchandise. The supporting cast is especially good, with Harry Morgan shining as Sheriff Slade and Albert Salmi delightful as his young chief deputy, Meshaw. And while not for the morally ambivalent, it manages to bring up some important ethical issues. As Mordecai tells Curly, "You can't cheat a honest man!" With no sex or profanity to speak of, it could well serve as the launching point for some telling discussions with your kids about right and wrong, loyalty, and what honesty really is. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A dynamite true fantasy?
Please understand that I just finished the book, Palestine and Israel, by Quigly, which I highly recommend on this fine vendor. When I say fantasy, I refer to the White Knights of the Israeli Military so, so effectively making the world safe for goodness, etc. This movie will quickly win your willing suspension of disbelief about the goodness, and of course, those folks are nothing if not effective, and you will get to wallow in it as you view this captivating and exhilarating movie. It's been one of my favorites for a long, long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars very true to life
This is one of the most factual movies I have seen. It tells it
from the people who were there and lived through it. All of the
actors were superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Movie!
This movie was a good report of the actal raid that occured in 1976.An airline jet had been hijacked and commandered to Entebbe
Uganda. All of the Jewish passengers were held hostage by the
German terrorists.Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin put together a
daring raid to rescue the prisoners who were being held by the
terrorists.Under the dark of night the Israeli special forces
swept into Entebbe and pulled off a stunning rescue mission. The hostages were freed with only one Israeli casualty. The Israeli
citizens were flew home to safety. This was a corageous stand and
attack on terrorism. All of this occured on the 200th birthday
of America. An excellent movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Defeat of Terrorism
Even with some of the liscence given to a Hollywood production of a significant moment on history, this tale stays close to the facts of one of the most daring raids in Modern Times. This daring rescue of over 100 hostages with only 3 casualties amongst them and one casualty among the Israeli troops (Benjamin Netanyahu's brother, Jonathan) showed the world that terrorism could be defeated. All of the terrorist hijackers were killed as were many of the Ugandan Military.

This raid inspired other daring counterattacks against terrrorism. Less than year later Dutch commandos stormed a train and a school and rescued 160 hostages from terrorists. A few months later German forces liberated 86 hostages aboard a German Airliner that had been hijacked by Iranian terrorists.

An amazing story done justice by a gripping film.

This film should be rereleased on DVD as well as VHS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "You're quite a man, Mr. Bond, James Bond." - Fatima Blush
Sean Connery reels in his 7th and last James Bond film in this unofficial movie- Never Say Never Again. A rival Bond movie that was released in 1983 and just re-released with the 19 official ones. A remake of Thunderball, with some pro's and con's. First- the villian is Maximillion Largo, a psychotic madman who has stolen 2 nuclear warheads and is holding the world for ransom. There is also the stunning, sexy and EVIL EVIL EVIL! Fatima Blush, a nemesis that takes extreme pleasure in hunting and chasing 007. Domino Petachi is the Bond girl that kills Largo in the end. Lani Hall does the title song for this movie (it ain't that great of a song), while Michael Legrand does the music. Never Say Never Again is a masterpiece that is full of action, adventure and all0out fun of the highest order!

3-0 out of 5 stars One last time...Just for fun
Best if not taken seriously. All very tongue-in-cheek. A big-budget thinly veiled remake of Thunderball. This time, an aging 007 (Sean Connery greying a bit around around the temples) is pulled out of semi-retirement to track down Bond villain Emile Largo and two stolen nuclear bombs. The action moves from Nassau to the South of France to N. Africa. Of course, there are holes in the plot you could drive an Aston Martin through, the acting by most of the actors is barely acceptable, there isn't much sustained action, it runs out of energy before it runs out of movie and it lacks the nice touches and the class of the official Bond movies. I liked Claus Maria Brandauer as the sicko bad guy. Easily the best acting of the movie. Barbara Carrera and Kim Bassinger are beautiful Bond girls. Connery looks like he's having a lot of fun. Some of the scenes are quite clever; esp. the scene in which Bond and Fatima Blush (Carrera) write his memoirs. The World Domination videogame sequence is unique, to say the least. Look for Mr. Bean star, Rowan Atkinson, in an early role. I like this movie perhaps for the wrong reason. I don't expect much of it. It silly, its fun, its great to see Connery's Bond one last time and its fun to look at if only to compare it to the real Bond films.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bond
I pretty much agree with everyone else about this movie....but did you know that this is NOT an OFFICIAL James Bond movie? It is not part of the series. Need proof? Just search for any James Bond CD's in the Music section of Amazon.com and look through the playlists of the Theme Song CD's. Never Say Never Again is not on any of the lists. That's why this movie seems like a duplicate. It is a cheap knock-off of Thunderball.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can You Say Boring?
If you can sit through this movie without falling asleep or crying of boredom you are probably the first! This is hands down the worst Bond of all. It was never origionally writen by Ian Flemming, which made it STUPID. I don't recomdend wasting your money on this. Use it to buy one of the better ones like:

GOLDFINGER
GOLDENEYE
TOMORROW NEVER DIES

2-0 out of 5 stars Thunderball Knockoff
The Never Say Never Again movies is a knockoff of the better Bond movie Thunderball. In this one SPECTRE steals necular bombs and holds the world hostage (as always) and Bond Save the world (again). It includes A M that is 30 years younger than Robert Brown, and A Q that (I think) also played in the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Overall if you want to get this movie, Save your money and get Thunderball! Afterall It isn't really a true bond Movie. ... Read more

This film should be rereleased on DVD as well as VHS. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Busy at Times, But Mostly Good.
Sean Connery plays a poet suffering from writer's block (incapacity to write something one feels is a finished creation, sort of; or not being able to write at all). He's the (supposedly) unrecognized genius and is as a by-product also totally different than most other people: he sees the world through different eyes, or so to speak. This is, alas, not portrayed as I would have liked to see; it's only more or less stated/presumed.

Next to this he does not pay his bills, is unemployed and not seeking for work, or, if he has a job, losing it easily. And he goes from one woman to the next ... they flock to him, he thinks, so they're not his problem. Samson Shillitoe (Connery) is, in short, sexist and insensitive. He also has the habit of almost-hitting his wife whenever he feels like doing that.

He only wants to work on his poem, and he needs, above all, time and rest. Neither seem to be available in considerable quantities, especially not if the past keeps getting in the way.

Lots of problems, but they're in the case of A Fine Madness tackled with comedy. While I thought the film was at all times amusing, certain scenes stood out. One other reviewer (there are at this time only 3 or so; you'll find him/her) mentioned the poetry recital. Good material!

I just hope you like the style of this film. Somewhat dated, yes, but what do you want? This is how old? From the sixties? I forgot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sean Connery playing a writer?
In this movie Sean Connery plays a noncomforist poet. Much like in "Finding Forrester", a much worse movie, the portrayal is not too convincing. Because of his financial trouble with the law, he agrees to psychology care and help at a resort like hospital. This all leads to mischief which at times I felt was overdone especially with the music in the background to tell us something wacky was on the screen.
The real reason to see this would be Joanne Woodward and the stunning Jean Seberg, who plays the psychologist's troubled wife. Joanne is good as Sean's homely wife who you can't help but feel sorry being married to this sex crazed maniac. There's also a bizarre surreal scene with Jean Seberg and Connery in a tub. It's uneven at times which results in it getting a 2 1/2 from me.

4-0 out of 5 stars And now for something completely different
Sean Connery sinks his teeth into a full-blooded comic role as a nonconformist poet suffering from writer's block and alimony collectors in mid-1960s New York. The film's madcap style is a bit dated but there are many gems of scenes in this satire of the misunderstood artist in cultureless society. Watching Connery drink and snarl through a poetry 'recital' at a ladies' tea is hysterical, and his little dance on the Brooklyn Bridge is among the revelations. It's interesting that 'A Fine Madness' makes a point of being a NYC movie, and an offbeat one at that, with its bawdiness hinting at the coming sexual revolution and featuring an international superstar who had the energy to stretch himself in something risky--which is more than we can say for most of today's typecast stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a movie sequel
Most sequels to great movies aren't very good, but "Robocop 2" is an exception. Robocop (Peter Weller) returns to rid the city of criminals. In this sequel, he's ultimately after the drug lord of the city, Cain (Tom Noonan). But the road to finding Cain won't come easy, especially not after Robocop gets torn to pieces by some of Cain's people. However, Robocop does finally meet Cain face to face, except that Cain isn't human anymore, he's a cyborg just like Robocop himself, and an evil one at that.

I don't see how anybody could give "Robocop 2" a bad rating because it's a great sequel. It has a little bit of dark humor such as a commercial where a woman puts on blue suntan lotion that has a caution reading: "Using this too much can cause cancer." And best of all it has spectacular action sequences, especially after Robocop and Cain finally meet and start fighting each other. The special effects are great, and Robocop 2 (Cain as a robot) is especially well done with all his weapons and the computer that acts as Cain's brain.

If you like great action movies or if you liked the first "Robocop," I recommend getting "Robocop 2" without thinking twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic sequel.
Many people hate this movie. I didn't. It is just as good as the original and 1000 times better than #3. Set about one year after the first one (listen to the Old Man"s speech before he introduces Robocop 2), RoboCop is back and this time he's up against druglord Cain (Tom Noonan) and the young Hod (Gabriel Damon). The cops won't do anything because they are still on strike, but RoboCop and his partner Lewis (Nancy Allen) are still in business. RoboCop captures Cain eventually, but OCP, who created RoboCop, creates RoboCop 2 and puts Cain's brain in the machine. Now RoboCop must fight Cain one last time in the building OCP gave to Detroit as "a gift."

This was a good movie, not as bad as some people give it credit for. Peter Weller did a fantastic job as RoboCop. Tom Noonan and Gabriel Damon did just as good. This is one of the best sequels of all time. So remember to buy this and the original and avoid #3 at all costs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robocop 2 REVIEW
Worthwhile sequel to Verhoven's smash hit, "Robocop" has Weller reprising his role of Alex Murphy, a deceased cop brought back as a machine to fight crime in futuristic Detriot. This time around, Motor City is at war as a dictator-like drug dealer is using his new designer drug, "Nuke" to gather a group of followers. Meanwhile, most of the police force is on strike while Robo's manufacturing company, OCP, wants to take over the bankrupt city. OCP decides to create a newer more stronger "Robocop" but rather than use an actual field officer like they did with Murphy, they turn to the very drug dealer who has turned the city into a war zone. The usual violent mayhem ensues before the two Robocops battle their way through the city in an anti-climatic grudge match. "Robocop 2" is even more violent than the original but it does still feature a lot of the over-the-top humor displayed in its predecessor as well. Fans of the first will enjoy but most others will proably be unimpressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robocop 2
A fun movie see this if you like the 1st movie and see the thrid!

2-0 out of 5 stars Fun movie...until it starts taking itself seriously
The first hour of this film was actually kind of fun, but in the middle of the second act the dark humor and self-satire soon gets replaced by violence. And lots of violence. And that means loads o' killing. So if you like bodies getting flung around all over the place, this might be your kind of movie. I think even Joe Bob Briggs would lose count on how mean "dead bodies" this movie has. I don't know if it's action so much as a string of massacres put before the viewer.

And hey...what does every one see in Peter Weller? Saying he's a great actor and all - how can you tell? Most of the time his face is covered save the mouth, and his role calls for no expression in his voice. (...)

And were we supposed to feel bad the bratty kid got killed? You know...the kid who tried to strangle the female lead with wire, killed a few policemen, and then tried to start a drug ring. I don't care if he's 12, you live by the sword you die by sword. Don't play that sad music and have Robocop be all sympathetic! Blech. Puuuuuh-leez.

You know we need more movies where kids die...especially the annoying ones. I'll give this movie that. ... Read more

Though not as successful as What's Up, Doc? or The Way WeWere, Up the Sandbox springs from the early 1970s, when BarbraStreisand's career was in full stride. Streisand stars as Margaret, astay-at-home mom in the middle of New York who's feeling the strain of her narrow life.Frustrated by her self-involved husband and the emotionally rewarding butmentally unstimulating tasks of motherhood, she escapes into fantasies--such asbeing hit on by a cross-gendered Fidel Castro, bombing the Statue of Libertywith black militants, and having a furious catfight with her overbearing mother. The movie's strength lies in these fantasies' slippery nature; some are over thetop, but others are so subtle you're not always sure where they start and stop, making the portrait of Margaret's psyche intriguingly complex. Streisand fansshould check out this sleeper. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth watching for the hilarious Castro scenes alone
In the comedy film "Up the Sandbox" New York housewife Margaret Reynolds (Barbra Streisand) is married to a hard-working professor. They live with their two small children in a cramped, unpleasant flat. The flat is always messy, and Margaret's interfering mother uses Margaret's inability to cope as fuel in the argument that they need to leave New York.

Faced with yet another pregnancy that she hesitates to discuss, Margaret begins slipping into the only escape possible, and she begins to create a rich fantasy life to compensate for her boredom. All of these fantasies are exciting adventures in which Margaret has a pivotal role.

Feminism was still in its early stages when this film was made, and that is evident. Margaret's husband, Paul Reynolds, is a cipher in the film, and I think the film suffers from a failure to develop his character. The film is worth watching however--if only for the scenes with Castro. For a film from the early 70s, the Castro scenes are really quite remarkable. This is not Barbra's most successful comedy, but it's worth watching if you're a fan of early Barbra Streisand--displacedhuman.

4-0 out of 5 stars What Women Dream About...
"Up the Sandbox" is a little known but interesting movie among Barbara Streisand's cannon of film's. At a time, when she was commonly known for making either extravegant musicals or slapstick comedies she released this comedy/drama, which seriously delt with women's issues. This fact along with the film's somewhat confusing storyline might have been the reason fot it's box office failure and obscurity. But I like to view this unusual but interesting film as a 'diamond in the rough'. Look at it closely enough and it can be a richly rewarding viewing experience. In the film we meet, Margaret Reynolds (Barbra Streisand) a middle class, New York City housewife. Margaret is married to a university professor named Paul (David Selby) and is raising two young children in a cramped, inner city apartment. She finds being a mother is emotionally rewarding, but does not find much intellectual stimulation tending to diapers and strained peas. To deal with her frustrations, she engages in daydreams (making love to a Latin dictator, joining a radical group in terrorist acts, meeting a primitive Amazon African tribe, etc.)which reveal her inner feelings, that she cannot communicate to the people in her life. On top of all this, she learns from her doctor, that she is now pregnant again. What will she do? Will she have the child or get an abortion? Will she change the things in her life, that make her so unhappy? The film is dated with its portrayl of radical politics and 1970's hair and clothing styles, but the issues, that are at the core of the movie are just as relevent today as they were thirty years ago.The film asks questions such as "How many children should a women have? Where should children be raised? How do we treat children? What kind of relationship should we have with our parents? Should mothers work or not? Which parent should raise the children?" These are all questions that the film tries to grapple with. Director, Irvin Kershner tries to interject humor into the film with the use of the somewhat confusing fantasy scenes. The funniest is a sequence in which Streisand gets into a hilarious wrestling match with her obnoxious, meddling mother at her parent's anniversary party. It's total kaos! The casting of the film is superb. Streisand for once is playing an ordinary women living a very unglamourous life. She sublimates her superstar charisma and puts in a great acting performance.Actor, David Selby gives a very good turn playing an average husband, who one moment is insensitve and the next moment very understanding.Actress, Arianne Heller gives a great comic performance as the annoying and suffocating mother.Shes' every adult-age, child's nightmare! Heller nearly steals every scene she's in. Finally a mention should be made of Cinematographer, Gordon Willis' wonderful photography. The movie has a gritty, realistic look to it, that gives the film an almost documentary look. You can see from the pallett of colors he used, the beginnings of the acclaimed work he soon did in the "Godfather" movies. The DVD remastering for this film is fine for a movie from 1972. It's Extras include a trailer and commentary tracks from both Barbra Streisand and Director, Irvin Kershner. "Up the Sandbox" is an unusaul yet entertaining film, which will leave you with lots to think about. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Mothers have no special privileges here!"
After the uproarious zaniness of WHAT'S UP, DOC?, Streisand's follow-up picture, the decidedly bizarre UP THE SANDBOX, confused much of the film-going public and the film became the star's first flop at the box office. However, this poor reputation has only added luster to the film's appeal today, and UP THE SANDBOX has become a film that is very special to Streisand's many fans. The film's new-found appreciation is largely due to Streisand's beautifully restrained performance, which is full of warmth and nuanced believability. When she's taking on the routine banalities that were typical of the seventies' housewife, Streisand never fails to make the mundane appear so radiant and lovely.

Director Irvin Kershner (best known for directing THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK) gives the film an eerily abstract, European-like feel that lends UP THE SANDBOX an usual art house-style vibe. This is not a perfect film, however. The pace is almost rigidly slow and, even for a film with a 98 minute runtime, there are scenes that feel endless. Also, several of the fantasy sequences do not parallel the central storyline as well as they were intended to, which throws the film a bit off-balance and making it feel more uneven than it should. Finally, many of the issues the film raises, which were somewhat quaint even in '72, have dated badly when viewed today. But I still praise the film for it's uniqueness, and it's terrific lead performance. In the end, UP THE SANDBOX works as a vehicle for Streisand, and it allows the actress to showcase the quieter side of her brilliance.

About the DVD: The picture quality is very good (light years ahead of the hazy VHS copies), and the mono sound is also fine. The trailer and vintage featurette are entertaining, but the biggest feature is Streisand's terrific full-length commentary track (which more than makes up for the disappointedly skimpy track that she contributed to the WHAT'S UP, DOC DVD). Director Kershner is featured on a separate track, which is also very much worth listening to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow
This movie came as a total surprise to me. I've seen every Streisand movie and this one is the one that stands out the most. Not because it's the best but it's the most...strange? ...unique? Barbra fits the role perfectly. It shocks me how beautiful she was at that age. She looked amazing! She does such a broad range of acting in this movie. A tiny bit of action, some comedy, drama, romance. She can do it all. My favorite scene is the one where she fights with her mother. That scene is hilarious! This movie is all over the place and it probably would be better if it chose one path to follow but it still works. My biggest complaint is the editing. There's a lot of footage that should have been cut out like the family film scene. That was just boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the viewing time!
If you missed "Up The Sandbox" at the movies, now is the time to make up for it. The wit in this complex movie exploring a mother's daydreams about the more exciting life she may have lost when choosing to start a family may be subtle but it is fresh and funny even today. Barbra Streisand shows her comedic talent in this off beat gem. ...

Afterall It isn't really a true bond Movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest sequels ever!
I do not think I've ever seen a sequel that surpasses the prequel to such a degree as this film does. The opening quarter of an hour of the film is one of the best ever, that engages the attention of the viewer immediately. Action scenes are poignant and dramatically effective at the same time. I believe that the Lakota were far more sensitively portrayed than they were in 'A Man Called Horse' - when they seemed to do very little than shriek incoherently at each other and everyone else. The scenery and the costumes are great and are very authentic given the detail usually given to most films of this era.

The film begins with Harris returning to America, initially for a year, to visit the Lakota band that enslaved and later adopted him in the 1820's. He finds that his adoptive Yellow Hand people have been slaughtered by a group of trappers and an enemy tribe; the survivors enslaved or driven from their homeland. Harris eventually meets up with the survivors and helps revitalize their spirit enabling them to win back their homeland. If there is one fault with the film it is this; once again native people need a white man to save the day. If you can disregard this it is an excellent film - my favourite scenes being the Sun Dance and the Yellow Hand women getting the upper hand with the Arikaras! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I SEE YOU
Only in the seventies could a glossy, overblown film like this be so good. And it is..in spite of its excesses. Faye Dunaway, fresh from her Oscar turn in NETWORK, plays Laura Mars, a fashion photographer specializing in grotesque murder images. She also can "see" the murderer of several of her models while he or she is committing the foul deeds. Conveniently, the script doesn't address just how Laura got this "psychic ability." But it doesn't matter as it makes a compelling device when she joins the murderer via satellite. Rene Auberjenois chews up the scenery as her manager/agent, whose foppishness and over the top emoting are delightful to watch. Tommy Lee Jones, in one of his first big-screen features, plays the dashing detective John Neville, who falls in love with Dunaway and tries to believe her psychic witnessing. Director Irving Kershner keeps the glamour and glitz going with some deft mood swings. He gets good performances from his whole cast, although at times Faye seems to be auditioning for her later role in "Mommie Dearest," but she pulls back enough to keep her performance interesting. Jones is smooth, although his youth hinders some major transformations in the film. And definitely the costume designer had her work cut out for her with all of the fashions Dunaway wears. But it's the glitzy seventies and the mystery holds your attention, so that Laura Mars emerges as a gripping and entertaining whodunit. Also, it has the stunning "Prisoner" sung by producer Jon Peters' main squeeze then, Barbra Streisand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slick '70's Shocker Still Thrills
I was a bit surprised to read such good reviews of what is at best an enjoyable, albeit nonsensical thriller. Faye Dunaway overacts shamelessly in the title role, giving more than a hint of the crazed performance she would deliver only two years later in Mommie Dearest: She's all top-volume ululations and pop-eyed grimaces (decibel levels become unbearable when she runs through the streets screaming "Donald! Donald!" late in the film). Tommy Lee Jones is hulking and bearish as the cop who falls in love with Laura, and Rene Auberjonois is especially chic as Laura's best friend (brutally dispatched in one of the pic's most gratuitous sequences). The entire plot basically makes no sense at all (who knows why she sees the murders or how the killer gets into her mind, and why doesn't she warn the future victims?), and the film's alleged critique of "S&M Chic" is pop-psychology laughable. However, the movie as a whole is great if you want a little late 1970's nostalgia - the sleek, glitzy, Studio 54-milieu of New York's fashionistas is beautifully depicted without even a hint of irony: Dunaway and Auberjonois' clothes are stunning (not every article of 70's clothing was all polyester!) and the bizarre Streisand-disco sountrack is deliciousy sleazy. All-in-all, this film is an enjoyable, if trashy, glitterfest for those who wish they could have lived the high life of the 1970's. Enjoy this as a time capsule and forget about the plot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eyes of Laura Mars with All Those Great Stars!!!
I can remember when "Eyes of Laura Mars" came out back in 1978. The movie trailer shows that fantastic scene when Tommy Lee Jones comes right through that huge glass window. They would show this over and over on TV back then, when advertising this movie. For some reason, I knew who Tommy Lee Jones was back then. And I didn't watch the soap opera he was on either. Goes to show you what STAR POWER he had then. So cute with that great bowlish haircut!!!
Twenty Five years later, this movie still holds up!! I hadn't seen it in so long, we used to have a black & white television, this is how long i have seen it.
But i purchased the DVD last night, and watched it about 3 times. Seeing it in color is a real treat, and there are actors that i now recognize that i didn't back then.
Raul Julia as the Ex husband Michael Reisler has the line of the decade when he says to Faye Dunaway "I was your husband, I was never your friend!"......
Brad Dourif as Tommy Ludlow is wonderful as the loyal but suspicious looking chauffeuer/go-for. As Irvin Kershner states in his commentary "look at this guy, he's in the inner circle, and he's sloppily dressed, and his hair's a mess..."
I love Rene Auberjonois in this film. At this time, during the mid-late 1970's you could find Rene in just about every TV show, made for TV movie and film. This guy must never have been home!!!
Lisa Taylor at the time was about one of the most beautiful models in the early to later 1970's. I remember Darlanne Fleugel well (she was also in Crime Story in the late 1980s)but had never really connected her face with her name until now. Also you will see a young John Sahag, he plays a hairdresser in the movie. In real life he is one of the top hair stylists today, and is still cute with that shaggy hair and tight shirts!! He really hasn't changed!!!! It's these types of things that i like about the movie. The fashion, the music, the accessories, and even the wonderful STEIFF bear that is in the police precinct. He is sitting on the large table where Tommy Lee Jones conducts his investigations. You can see Lisa Taylor hugging the bear in another scene, and she doesn't want to let go.
Neither would I, for that matter!!!
But the film is great, and is a must see for those who enjoyed the films of the 1970's. Also invaluable is a nice "Eyes on Laura" photo gallery, where a person by the name of Laurent, gives us an inside to the script's changes while they show some great photos. Then the Director's Commentary is wonderful~~~Irvin Kershner talks to you, not AT YOU, just as if you were sitting with him in a living room, relaxing, and he gives you a play by play on the whole movie!!! He seems to be a person you can relate to, and his generous information will really brighten your day!

5-0 out of 5 stars DONALD!!!!
Dunaway gives one of her best performances here! Laura Mars is a fashion photog who is the toast of town with her 70's kitsch style glam shots. She also has the extraordinary ability to see through a serial killer's eyes! Tommy Lee Jones appears as a detective who falls for her. The film is pure camp and Dunaway chews the scenery as only she can. When her pal Donald bites it you can just feel the hilarity as she shreiks "Donnnnnaaaaallllldddd!" Do not pass this up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun!
What a howl! Not too scary ... but all that glam cheesy NYC late 70's stuff is captured perfectly. It's like looking at one of the photo books about decadant urban nightlife - disco, models, lesbianism, gay b'day parties, Faye-dearest, Tommy Lee-needs dermabrasion-Jones,and a token serial killer thrown in. Let's all chant! ... Read more

I'll give this movie that. ... Read more

After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond Girls include beauties Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera, they can't save the movie. The script has several truly dumb passages, among them a (gasp) video-game duel between 007 and his nemesis that now looks utterly anachronistic. For Connery fans, however, this widescreen print of the Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) film is a chance to say a final goodbye to a perfect marriage of actor and character. --Tom Keogh ...

Need proof? Just search for any James Bond CD's in t
