5-0 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL--MINUS 20
I've been hearing for years about "Twin Peaks", whether by word of mouth or on the internet. It's popular to mention the numerous pop-culture moments this show created and the fact that so many shows try to imitate, and fail, this landmark show. So after reading recaps of the pilot and first couple episodes, I decided to buy the whole thing.

I took a risk and I'd do it again because this show is one of the greatest achievements of all TV time. The pilot is a perfect intro to the show, establishing the characters and plots, the main one and various subplots, that it's addictive. WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER!? The mix of light and dark, quirky humor, heavy drama, fantastic production values, and so much more! If you haven't seen any of the show, stay clear of the last 15-20 minutes. I heard about the special ending and found out that the original pilot ends at Sarah Palmer's scream after her dream. End it there, watch the rest of the series, then go back and watch the ending.

Other than that, sit back, relax, and ENJOY! And believe me, YOU WILL!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best 2 Hours of Film Anywhere!
Twin Peaks is the premier for the greatest TV series ever created. Brought in to investigate the murder of Twin Peaks Homecoming Queen Laura Palmer, Agent Dale Cooper "Kyle MacLachlan" becomes wrapped up in a town full of mystery, murder, damn good coffee and killer cherry pie.

This is pretty much what any fan of the show or David Lynch needs to start with. It's the original movie/pilot, and is a great piece of work. The story, the characters, and the whole northwest environment really make for an interesting and sometimes creepy watch. Many cool actors showed up in "Twin Peaks", among them Kyle McLachlan, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Sheryl Lee, Jack Nance, and the sexy Sherilyn Fenn. If you enjoy this, seek out the VHS collectors series, episodes 1-7. Or the DVD first season, which is also episodes 1-7, minus this pilot.

So I'm sitting on this chair, in this house, on mars when this movie comes on. TWIN PEAKS. The first thing I saw was this grotesque factory-mill type place. And then there was this close-up shot of some rusty machine, and it moved...it moved with the music. Sparks were shooting out everywhere, and it was all moving to this other-worldly melody. Then waterfalls, ponds, ducks...in less than one minute, Lynch had sucked me in, shattered me, put me back together (the way he saw fit), and then he dropped me off into TWIN PEAKS.
The whole thing was beatiful. Lynch and Frost had created this soft cloud of a world that was filled shards of glass and rusty nails. It was all like a dream -a dream that you don't want to wake up from. Bobby, Donna, Shelly, Big Ed. I was lost.
"I too have been touched by the devilish one. Ahh, but when I saw the face of God..." This sleek-Norman Rockwell-wrong way on a one way street-imitation silk-nightmare is a mountain top work of art that leads you dead on into the midst of the footstool of the heavens.
-be sure to watch it in the full blossom of the evening, and you just might experience the beatific vision...FIRE WALK WITH ME.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of TV's best pilots!
If only it were on DVD! This tape contains the classic 2 hour pilot for David Lynch's extraordinary and quirky TV cult favorite, "Twin Peaks". This 2 hour intro is NOT part of the six tape "complete" series collection that has the actual 29 episodes. There is a neat, confusing, untelevised 15 minute ending that was used to "wrap up" the whole murder when this same tape was released in Europe as a made-for-TV movie. Still, it is simply Twin Peaks at its best. ... Read more

For a couple of hours in 1990, David Lynch took over the network airwaves and subtly, subversively transformed American television forever. Amazingly, the TV series that followed this rich and strange feature-length pilot became an international phenomenon as people all over the world became obsessed by one question: Who killed Laura Palmer? Twin Peaks is the apotheosis of all things Lynch, and arguably his single greatest achievement. Set in the dark, damp, woodsy atmosphere of a small mountain town in the Pacific Northwest, Twin Peaks is a murder mystery, detective saga, soap opera, sitcom--the essence of television distilled into one mind-blowing serial. Lynch subverts TV conventions right and left, not the least by concentrating on the grief of Laura's friends and family, and orchestrating their tears into a symphony of mourning. Twin Peaks is about the endlessly seductive idea of "mystery," of the ways human beings find to deal with the unknown. It was never about solutions; after all, answers (which are invariably anticlimactic) only kill the Mystery! So, although it took another year or so before Lynch and his partner Mark Frost were eventually forced (by the network and public opinion) to reveal the identity of Laura Palmer's murderer, the tantalizing clues are the real heart of the enterprise, and they're all right here in the debut. And so are some excerpts from Agent Cooper's surrealistic dream sequence (which appeared in the third episode of the series), featuring the dancing, backward-talking little "Man from Another Place," as part of a special European-release finale (you wouldn't want to use the word "conclusion") for this video version. --Jim Emerson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOULD YOU LIKE SOME COFFEE?
This image of the Red Room, this world of Twin peaks is horrifying!! I must admit I cried for hours after the ending of this show. I was extremely depressed, I still get depressed about and the first time I watched it was in January 2000. I really love this tape. I love TWIN PEAKS. It needs more to it. I want Lynch to direct another TWIN PEAKS movie!! I want MORE!!! PEAKS IN MY MIND HASN'T DIED. FRANKLY, I see Peaks still around, in a spooky world!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not finished...
These final episodes are perfectly showcase all that made Twin Peaks an excellent show. They have every bit of the symbolism, surrealism, and humor that gave it it's fan base.

Unfortunatly it's very obvious that the last episode was intended to be a cliff-hanger and that they expected to make more. Be warned that while it is very interesting, many questions are left un-ansered(and never will be), many new questions are asked, and the audience never knows what the fate of several of the characters is.

Of course, if you are reading this I assume you have seen the other episodes already and you're probably going to see these regardless of what I say. Enjoy...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Finish to the Series
These are the final five episodes of the "Twin Peaks" series; they are somewhat of a redemption after some weak episodes immediately preceeding these. The plots are much stronger, especially those focusing on Agent Cooper. His attraction to Annie Blackburn is nicely played (with a strong romantic piece by Angelo Badalamenti). The Windom Earle plot becomes intriguing as it becomes bigger than Earle (who is overplayed by Kenneth Welsh) and delves into the supernatural (and, as mentioned in another review, becomes an inspiration for the X-Files).

The other plotlines are also strong. Especially intriguing is the Andrew Packard character, as he (along with Catherine and Pete) deals with the mysterious black box. Dan O'Herlihy has a great stage presence as Packard; I wish he could have been featured more in the series.

The build up to Episode 29 is nicely done -- Lynch's direction of the final episode has that first season feel to it (though a little darker). It would have been a great season-ending cliffhanger (I would have been interested to see if Major Briggs went to the rescue at the Black Lodge), but remains an odd end to the series.

For these espisodes, the only major complaint is that they deserve to be on DVD. For the future, I would love to see some sort of continuation of the story nearly ten years later. It would be fun to have a Lynch/Frost/Chris Carter collaboration on a movie combining "Twin Peaks" with the "X-Files." It probably won't happen, but this series deserves more.

5-0 out of 5 stars AH, THE SUBTLE WONDERS OF THE RED ROOM....
WOULDN'T IT BE WEIRD IF THIS WAS REALLY THE WAY IT ALL ENDED? WITH NO SENSE OF CLOSURE, OR POSSIBILITY OF REDEMPTION. JUST CONFUSING, TWISTED, DISHEARTENING, AND ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! COMMENTS WELCOME AT nick82e@hotmail.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you like the X-files, watch these last episodes
When they first aired Twin Peaks I; like many other people, didn't really understand and was very confused by the last section of episodes, but since then we've been treated to shows like the X-files and Dark Skies, and it's now alot easier to understand references to "Project Bluebook" and other UFO and paranormal-related stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best series on television ever!
This is definitely the series that started it all...American Gothic, X Files. They have nothing on David Lynch. These last few episodes are amazing, but you must see them all. Talk about bizarre. They had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode. I watched them all in a week!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Twin Peaks, but video quality is ATROCIOUS
I'm a big twin peaks fan, but the quality of these videos is absolutely horrible....episode 24 was totally unwatchable, it was mostly static, and the other tapes are also of similar quality. Unfortunately it seems that these poor quality videos are the only release of TP currently available, which is really too bad.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Big Dip in Quality
I hadn't seen "Twin Peaks" since the episodes first aired. While I enjoyed the earlier second season episodes much more the second time around, these particular episodes (especially 21-23) are still as bad as the first time I saw them.

One subplot, with James Hurley helping a hot blond woman fix her car, plays like a overwrought fifth season "Twilight Zone." Another embarrasing plot deals with Ben Horne and the Civil War. And Kenneth Welsh goes over the top playing Cooper's former partner, Windom Earle.

There are good parts even in these five episodes, including a wonderful performance by David Duchovny in episode 20 and continued strong acting from Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean and many others.

Episode 24 is vastly improved over the previous three and the plots become stronger as the season (and series) wound down, but I suspect the poor quality turned many viewers off. The writers didn't seem to be ready to fill the gap once Laura Palmer's murder was solved, and that probably doomed the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOWN....DOWN.....DOWN....
ENTER THE DEEP DARK WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH! DO NOT WATCH THE EPISODES BY THEMSELVES OR OUT OF SEQUENCE AS THIS CAN LEAD TO SEVERE CONFUSION AND HAND-WRINGING. WATCH THE PILOT FIRST (PREFERABLY THE NON-EUROPEAN ONE WITHOUT EXTRA CONFUSING SCENES), THEN EPS. 1-29, THEN THE FILM TWIN PEAKS:FIRE WALK WITH ME. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. 3-0 out of 5 stars pure curiosity kept this series alive
Twin Peaks was already losing steam long before the 20thepisode [but]I couldn't help but watch to see where Lynch would go with it. Lynch's murder mystery started off with a terrific bang that created so much interest you couldn't help but continue watching. The last episodes tend to be a bit over the top, but it is worth watching atleast once. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The videos are not what they seem
Remember those homemade tapes you had of the series when it aired originally? Unless your cable went on the fritz or you forgot to hit the record button after the commercial break, the copies were good enough to satisfy your cravings for cherry pie, a cup of joe and the whole wacky Twin Peaks gang. Hopefully you never lost them but if you did...Hurray! Because someone found your copies and dubbed them and over dubbed them and packaged them into this really poor quality set from some company called "Worldvision" A company who likes to re-sell garbage from your curb back to you. If you're desperate like me, don't have a DVD player, and are wary of e-bay, this unfortunately is your only alternative.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - Garbage Alert - Peakers Beware
Geez, $$$ for 5 episodes sounds like a bargain huh? Don't fall for it. I love Twin Peaks, but I was shocked to see how [bad] the quality is. I was dumb enough to buy the entire series in this 6 hour format, so it took a little while before I got to watch enough to see how horrible the quality is. I am surprised to see that they are still selling this. I am hopeful that the series will be available on DVD in the future and if it is I hope they do a decent job of digital remastering.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE FASCINATING WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH....
THE SERIES LOSES A LITTLE BIT AS IT TRIES TO FIND A NEW DIRECTION POST-LAURA PALMER. BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF GREAT MOMENTS AND DAVID DUCHOVNY (EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT AN X-FILES FAN) STEALS PRETTY MUCH EVERY SCENE HE IS IN. ALSO, THE SERIES TAKES ON AN INTERESTING QUALITY RIGHT ABOUT HERE -- MORE HUMOR AND LIGHT-HEARTED MOMENTS. BUT I COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THE FLIRTATION WITH SPACEMEN. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Being There
When Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert first reviewed this film they agreed that "It IS a documentary -- but about WHAT"? Keaton's delicious film is really a satire couched in the form of a mock-survey on the images we have OF heaven, the sources broadly divided among Hollywood movie images, "Bible Belt" America fundamentalism (then-popular local Protestant fundamentalist Reverend Hymers gets to put his two cents in the opinion plate), along with assorted New Age perspectives and at least one chillingly dogmatic and persuasive atheist -- Diane Keaton's mother (who died shortly after the film was made, but not before having the (her) last word on the subject). For all of its wonderful simplicity, this film has aroused a lot of controversy, both as to its quality and success as a film, and to its subject matter. There are two very tempting and very wrong ways to approach this film, and a third I will mention last.

The first is as a completely objective, thorough, and -- heaven help us -- "authoritative" documentary, even if only a documentary of American lay attitudes on the subject. Keaton does not appear onscreen (is this a poke at our God-like images of poll-takers -- and movie directors?) nor is her voice heard (her prompt-questions, arranged by subject, e.g. "Is There Sex After Death?", are edited out), but her presence is felt; she draws her material from two primary sources: public opinion, and popular media imagery. This should clue the viewer into the non-literalness of her "documentary" format. Michael Moore (accepting his Oscar for "Bowling for Columbine") claimed that documentary film-makers are objective truth tellers -- a shameful lie at best; documentary film-makers are essayists, presenting facts that support the argument for a particular viewpoint. What Keaton's own opinion is of the Here-and-Now's view of the Hereafter is the puzzle the viewer is invited to tackle. This is why she selects, not experts, or well-reasoned or "balanced" viewpoints, but the viewpoints contained in our lore of heaven. The films and TV images are a part of our shared lore, and the opinion of the man-on-the-street is not that of the average man on the street, but the average resident of or visitor to Southern California (what the film was shot), the sort of resident or visitor or who would willingly consent to sit in an interview room resembling a set from "Queen of Outer Space" and reveal one's deepest hopes, shallowest ideas, greatest fears, or simply one's long-fallow right-brain opinings on a subject that in daily life most everybody does have an opinion of, but somehow never gets asked about. Serious anthropological analysts of public opinion and experts seeking information about heaven (?!) will go nuts sorting out the "facts" here. Rather than walk away informed, the viewer is provoked by Keaton into asking his or her own serious questions.

The other wrong approach is to not take the subject matter, or Keaton's selection of images (including scenes from "Buck Rogers" and "Stairway to Heaven"), or her sociological guinea pigs' responses, seriously *enough*. The film itself IS a laugh riot, make no mistake. Keaton has not abandoned her comic roots for a second. Keaton intersperses her individual interviews of the pedestrians along Hollywood Boulevard with clips from famous, infamous and long-forgotten films on the subject, as well as excerpts from religious TV shows presenting "expert" views for TV congregationalists. But underlying this superbly edited collection of Hollywood, religious, fringe and personal spiritual kitsch is a subtle but profound sense of earnest curiosity and longing coupled with a level of sincerity one rarely finds in public discourse, much less films (even documentaries) these days.

The film ends with the last and longest of a set of comments made by Keaton's mother: a rebuttal to all of the fantasy images preceding this final moment, a dour, atheistic and utterly unabashed perspective on heaven worthy of Mark Twain or Ambrose Bierce. Mother Keaton knew she was dying when she gave her interview, and this "last word" sets the viewer up straight. Eighty minutes of animated, comical "evidence" and "argument" on a subject no one really knows anything about strikes the viewer as absurd. But while the images that we share of "heaven" have been drawn from (and determined -- even co-opted) by Hollywood, religious fundamentalist media organizations and various alternative "fringe" groups, Mother Keaton's comments pull us back from the familiar, hokey images to the object they purport to represent: the concept behind and the significance of Heaven itself, not just as a place and time in human existence (or not), but as a benchmark for our own progress, our own development, our own achievement and meaning in this Earthly life. Keaton's negative comments regarding heaven, as personal and as opinionated as any of the preceding views presented, is not as easily dismissed. They prompt the most serious of questions: What do our lives, our successes and failures, our actions and inactions, our joys and sufferings, the very meaning of our lives, add up to? Believers and non-believers alike, as they leave the theater (or rewind the videotape) are left hanging, and thinking about what the end (the aim, purpose, goal, etc.) of humanity in general and each of us personally IS. Mother Keaton's final statement of skepticism dispels the giddy, shallow feeling- superior- and- above- it- all hilarity audiences feel throughout the film. We are left at the end with aching, unanswered, philosophical -- but by no means academic -- questions to ponder, central to our being: If the comic images of heaven we have been watching all this time are false, then what IS the truth? If Mother Keaton's cynicism is too sour and bleak to accept -- then what do we, or should we, or can we, believe? What is it all for? Why are we here? What becomes of us?

4-0 out of 5 stars A head of its time! Diane Keaton is surprisingly cool!
The subject sounded cool, but I was hesitant with someone as mainstream as Diane Keaton directing. Wow, this blew me away! If you're hardcore religious and can't laugh at yourself you may have problems with this. But to hear the variety of people interviewed interpreting their view of what heaven is, as well as death and other related, hard to discuss topics is hilarious and sometimes touching. I can't believe the soundtrack Diane used, it's like a watered down version of old Ministry/Skinny Puppy. I had know idea Diane was so hip, specially when you consider the year this was made, which I believe was 1987. If you like stuff like the Awful Truth or Errol Morris docs, you definitely should check this out.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of best, funniest, weirdest films on religion ever made.
Keaton's first directed film is one of the funniest, weirdest and best films on religion that I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot of 'em. Some of the folks interviewed are downright scary, others naive & silly, but all of them seem sincere. Highlight of the film is an argument between an atheist punk teen and a longhaired Jesus freak who talks about cows being God's lawnmowers (thus don't eat the lawnmowers). Several of the old film clips woven throughout are forever in my head, especially the deranged voice of a preacher screeching "ARE YOU AFRAID TO DIE?" yells over footage of buildings collapsing, dams bursting, car wrecks, etc.

For me, this film is better than any of Woody Allen's movies, except for "Sleeper" which is even crazier. This film itself is a sleeper that will likely get a lot more attention years down the road. The fact that Keaton directed it makes the viewing all the weirder. In America's culture of total fear of everything it's a film worth watching.

If you have a sense of irony, can appreciate the juxtaposition of heartfelt interviews with bizzare religious film footage, and can "get" this level of hilarious film making, this one's for you. If you lack these critical viewing skills please give your copy of this film to someone who does, it's a brilliant, must-see movie!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste
View once and throw away. The only item worth telling is a man recounting a conversation between his mother and father.

Father, "I'll sit on a rock and wait for you ... It'll probably be a gold rock."

Posturing and dogma; Life-is-hard" rants by broken people; Forced discourses by people not really interested. The movie clips seemed meaningless to me. Self indulgent film making?

4-0 out of 5 stars A carnival ride
This is a fascinating, playful, and scary film. Most of the interviewees were obviously selected for their entertainment value, so there is not much of the "man/woman on the street" feel, unless the street happens to abut a fundamentalist insane asylum in the French Quarter.

I enjoyed laughing at the many assorted kooks until I remembered that the majority of Americans probably share their views. Evolution has some catching up to do. Check it out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW-Gotta see this film! You'll never forget it....
This movie is so dramatic and moving. The rollercoaster of emotions that you experience while watching this film is AMAZING!
My children 6 and 4 learned so much about lifes cruelties and blessings. They also learned about peoples differences and sharing them NOT hurting them. This movie just WOW's me every time. It is an AMERICAN CLASSIC in my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heart-warming tale....
Well, I first saw this movie on TV when I was a little girl... it made such an impact on me that I checked the TV Guide for years to come waiting for it to be shown again. Finally, about 5 years later, it was and I managed to get it taped on VHS. This week, 10 years after I first saw it, I now have the DVD.
I love this absorbing film with the old-fashioned story-telling and the way the movie un-folds. We watch the characters develop as they grow within themselves (the acting is absolutely superb by everyone). There is a lot to learn from this story - which is a heart-warming gentle story about love, passion, friendship and family. There are a lot of sad moments yet this film also makes you laugh out loud at times too. This film is quite powerful in a naive sort of way. The ending is satisfying and you feel like you have also grown-up with the characters - in this romantic adventure of human spirit. A family film mainly directed towards girls - it'll make you want to go and hug your loved ones when you've finished watching it! I even love the music to this film and wish they would release the entire motion picture soundtrack on CD. Fantastic! Go watch it (especially if you're young at heart).....this is a truely lovely story that deserves more credit than a TV film.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite classic!
I recently found this movie once again in my video store. I had seen it at a young age when it first came out, and I recall it making as much of an impact on me then as it does now. The beauty of the love story and Alice's personal triumphs are so poignant, not to mention her interactions with Ellie and her father. The symbolism of the roses in relation to Alice was beautifully thought out. I laughed and cried throughout the whole movie. I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of the book that this movie was based on from Amazon, and it was fantastic! If you loved the movie, get your hands on the book! Both are definite keepers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I just recently watched this movie and I totaly loved it. I'm a big fan of reese witherspoon so I knew that I'd enjoy it but I loved her brother sammy and how he fell in love with this abused girl. It showed that Handicapped people are just as smart as anybody else. Everybody should see this film and learn the meaning of True Love and Friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reese and Patricia, and how
There were a couple of aspects of this movie that were a little too neat and packaged, like how Reese'es character's dad changes overnight and such. But I have to say that this movie was riveting to me. I have never before seen Patricia Arquette and I was just astounded. Her performance is absolutely superb. To me, a book or movie is great, when I literally feel like I have become a person in the story, and feel everything that person feels. That is why this movie is so great. Patricia's character is that person in this movie, at least to me. I am an absolute fan of Reese Witherspoon, so I couldn't be too objective as I love everything about her and she is great in this movie as always. Her character really shows the love of a true friend to the abused girl. I cannot imagine anyone watching this movie and not enjoying it. It is a truly heartwarming story. I will watch it again and again. If you like it, check out "The Man in the Moon." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget this watered-down adaptation: BUY THE BOOK!!!!!!!
Diane Keaton's film of Franz Lidz's dark, hilarious memoir bombed in the States - amid charges of anti-Semitism - and it's easy to see why. It's norra lorra laffs. Lidz's book about his four (count 'em - 4, not 2!) crazy uncles and his borderline-crazy father has a Dickensian scope and a Joycian dynamic. His view is gently ironic, and propelled by pace, bite and pathos. In this movie, simplification and scaling down - plus huge Hollywood compromises and significant changes in ethnicity - lose the balance. A great opportunity lost and, ultimately, a terrible shame.

3-0 out of 5 stars A moving story .... albeit Hollywood style
After reading the other reviews, I would love to read the book because it sounds like a wonderful book. With that said, every film watcher must face the reality that books and films often have very little similarity if the book probes into the deep emotions of its characters. Therefore, this review will focus on what the film has to offer relative to other films of its kind.

First, the cast is magnificent and do an excellent job in the movie. Although Michael Richards has type-cast himself due to his strong personality in Seinfeld, he did an amazing job of portraying an equally quirky character. John Turturro is generally amazing in everything and although Andy McDowell is a bit mechanical in her acting, she showed a range in this movie that was well beyond what we're use to in her other pictures.

Second, the story itself, albeit altered from the book, had a very nice flow and for a two hour film, conflict and depth was developed. These things made the film not only watchable but also thought-provoking.

So, if you like thought-provoking movies and willing to accept that character depth is difficult to achieve in a movie, you might just like this one. The price ... is not incredibly steep but a viewing from a library copy might be just the thing to convince you this movie is worth buying.

2-0 out of 5 stars As nutty as lemon meringue pie
Too much of a bad thing can be terrible. It's fish 4 days old, I wouldn't buy it. Or even rent it. The movie drips with treacle. Whoever said they cried during this movie must have an open canister of tear gas left around the house. Insanity runs in MY family, infact it practically gallops. But this adorably silly family acts more like silly putty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Change of Pace....Terrific Cast
This review refers to the DVD edition(Hollywood Pictures Home Entertainment) of "Unstrung Heroes"......

In the mood for something just a little different? Try spending some time with Michael Richards and Maury Chaykin. They're about as different as you can get. They are Danny an Arthur Lidz, the two very eccentric brothers(not too far removed from Richard's 'Kramer' character on "Seinfeld")who take in their young nephew Steven when things at his house are a little tough to take.

Steven Lidz has always been a bit different from the rest of the kids, this no doubt due to the fact that his father is a bit of an eccentric himself. He is learning to deal with his father's way of life, but when he learns of his mother's terminal illness it's more than he can handle and runs away to stay with his uncles. Uncle Danny and Uncle Arthur are not the ideal choice for baby-sitters, but may be able to teach Steven and his father what's important in life.

The story based on a book by Franz Lidz(the now grown Steven), set in the 1950's, will evoke many emotions. It is touching, at times poignant, sometimes funny, but most of all, I found it to be very heartwarming. It a story of love and family.

Diane Keaton directs this emotional film, and gives us a look at her terrific behind the camera talents.Richards and Chaykin are perfectly cast in the roles of the uncles. Nathan Watt plays the young Steven(Franz) and holds his own with seasoned veterans Andie MacDowell and John Turturro as his parents. The music by Thomas Newman is as moving as the story, and was nominated for an Oscar.

The DVD is a good buy for the price. It has a nice clear picture, with good color and is presented in widescreen. The sound in Dolby Dig Surround(stereo) is very good.It may be viewed in French and has subtitles in Spanish only. There are no other features.

For a few smiles, a few tears, and lots of love, check this one out and enjoy.....Laurie

1-0 out of 5 stars Dumb Watering-Down of a Terrific Memoir
The review by the Beverly Hills psychiatrist below is a classic example of some PhD jamming the plot contrivances of a hokey Hollywood script into a set of pop shrink principles learned in Psych 101. What a hoot! Anybody who reads the book will see that the screenwriter was just trying to fit a difficult, multi-layered story into pat Disney formula, not grasp for Higher Meaning. As it is, the film is a huge disappointment: Where the book was acute and subversive and clear-headed, the movie is dull, reactionary and blubberingly sentimental. This is strictly filmmaking-by-the-numbers. Director Diane Keaton pushes all the same buttons Sylvester Stallone did in Rocky: She avoids depth and ambuiguity for calculation and apparent niavete. The amazing thing is that Prozac-dispensing Brainiacs like Dr. Beverly Hills buy into all this hooey. Or maybe it's not amazing at all. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Subject matter meaningful for some...not for all
In Hanging Up, the phone is the umbilical cord for the family in this story, three sisters and their dear old dad. While Hanging Up was touted as a comedy, at least that's the impression I got, I'm hard pressed to remember much about it that was funny, it's a drama if ever there was one.

We meet Eve, played by the effervescent Meg Ryan, the overwhelmed middle sister in a family of driven, slightly neurotic individuals. Oldest sister, Georgia (Diane Keaton who also directs) is typical oldest child, overachiever material with her own Vogue-esqe magazine, named Georgia. Youngest sister Maddy is a somewhat spoiled soap opera star played to whiney perfection by Lisa Kudrow. Last but not least, is the dying father, Lou, with the ever-grumpy and inappropriate Walter Matthau at the helm.

The film has woven together the present with a series of flashbacks to Eve's childhood as well as flashbacks during her time with her father in her adult life. Amidst all the flashbacks, is the busy, crazed daily routine of party planner Eve and her attempt to understand what is happening to her father. She must also deal with a level of resentment towards her sisters for being an interruption into her life with all their phone calls, but not being a shoulder to lean on for her where their father is concerned.

Hanging Up does a great job demonstrating just how stressed out people can get. There is regular day-to-day stress and then there is the stress you bring on yourself purely because of a basic personality flaw. I have firsthand knowledge of making stress out of things that don't have to be stressful. First ulcer at age fourteen, thank you very much. I can understand Meg Ryan's character and her propensity for making mountains out of molehills.

The most rewarding thing about watching a character like that is watching the "change". Let's not forget, folks, in a movie, the main character usually makes a personal change, has an epiphany, changes their life, or ends a destructive pattern. What is drama? Putting an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances. What Eve does early on in the film is reach a level of frustration that is so high she makes a scene in the middle of a hospital corridor.

Why is that so entertaining? Because she sort of freaks out and that's something regular people WANT to do, but CAN'T because we behave within the confines of societal norms. If I'm having a bad day, and I am in the middle of St. Anthony's and start yelling and flailing my arms, someone is gonna drag me to the fourth floor. In the movies you can scream and act like an idiot, in real life people look at you and say, "the cheese has slipped off her cracker".

Despite the frenetic pace of Eve's day to day routine and the frequent flashbacks, Hanging Up lacks the same gusto in its attempt to impact the viewer with the seriousness of a dying parent. Matthau's character seems to be little more than window-dressing with his scenes all virtually being nothing more than one-liners from the confines of his wheelchair or hospital bed. I guess I feel a dying parent would be a more significant story factor here than it seemed to be.

While I admit to becoming a little misty from time to time during the film, I was looking for gut-wrenching Terms of Endearment stuff. Hanging Up fell a little short for me but I'm sure people to whom a similar situation has happened may have a stronger emotional reaction.

However, there are two instances where Hanging Up was borderline daring, dealing with subject matter that I have seen little of, if ever. There is an obvious rift between Eve and her mother, from whom Lou was divorced many years before. We are given a taste of Eve's view of her mother from the flashback scenes, but the real drama comes when, in one of the flashback scenes Eve pays her mother a visit.

Eve goes to her mother (Cloris Leachman) to plead for her to return home because her father is so unhappy. Aside from that being a difficult confrontation for anyone to deal with, is the revelation that she's not all that satisfied with being a mother in the first place. Other girls couldn't wait to grow up and become mommies, so she thought she did too and it didn't take. The thought of hearing that coming out of a mother's mouth is almost like a kick in the stomach, which is exactly the reaction Ryan's character seemed to have. Talk about taboo, admitting to your child you wish you weren't a mother. Somebody call Jerry Springer, next topic, "I Wish You Were Never Born".

Another explosive element is the basis of the father's illness. His memory and clarity are more off than on. The sadness of a person slowly losing their mind, slowly forgetting everyone and everything dear to them is pathetic and emotionally charged. Hanging Up touches on this hopelessness in a moment of confusion, when Matthau's character confuses his daughter with someone else he used to know and basically, is hitting on her. Eve has to remind him that she's his daughter, not this other person and he becomes angry, stating he doesn't have any daughters. It's icky. But sometimes life is icky and this scene is a blatant reminder of just how icky things can get.

Hanging Up finally gets its message across when Ryan's character must basically get a grip and learn when to say when. She can't be superwoman, bearing the responsibility of what is happening to her father all by herself. I must also stress the importance of the sister relationships to the film as well, which I have no understanding of either since I have four younger brothers. I always wanted a sister, but with all those brothers, what I got instead was my own room. Women with sisters may take more away from this movie than any other viewer. Hanging Up isn't for some, great for others. This is one where your own life's experiences will impact your perspective on the film.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than the critics would have you believe
It seems the critics really hated this movie, but I found the premise one that really deserved addressing. The issue of one child being left to care for an ailing parent, while the other selfish siblings are heard from only if things aren't going their way, is an issue with which I'm sure many people have to deal.

In this movie, Meg Ryan plays the one that gets all the work and none of the credit. She does just a wonderful job, as does Walter Matthau as the father suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Though I might question some of the casting, based on ages of the actors (17 years difference between the oldest and youngest children!), even Kudrow and Keaton play their parts well...as spoiled, self centered siblings.

I believe what may be a turn-off to some is the presence of TOO MANY obnoxious personalities. The movie would have been much better without the presence of Adam Arkin's or Jesse James's characters...and I probably would have felt more sympathy for Meg Ryan's character as well.

Though the movie was far from perfect, there were some emotional moments in the movie that made up for its shortcomings.

I think the biggest problem with the story line was the unrealistic unity of the sisters at the end of the movie. Self-centered individuals do not suddenly change their ways. Had Meg's character gone on her way, leaving the sisters to SEE the error of their ways, it would have been a much more effective ending.

As for the transfer....as usual, a fantastic anamorphic widescreen picture from Columbia. The special features are not great, but certainly more than one gets on most basic DVD's.

In the end, I would say this is an enjoyable...though not completely fulfilling movie. It could have been better, but it is definitely worth a rental...or if you can find it in the bargain bin as I did....a cheap purchase.

{As an added challenge....see if you can recognize the film error as the cars are racing to the hospital toward the end of the movie.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes You Just Need to Hang Up
When I first saw this movie, I have to admit that I wasn't very impressed by it. You're going from sister to sister, scene to scene very quickly. I didn't have much time to understand what was even going on. So I decided to give the movie another chance, mostly because Diane Keaton is my favorite actress. So I did and as I watched, I became more aware of what was going on. Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, and Diane Keaton all give stunning performances in this movie. Walter Matthau gave a great performance as the father. The sad part is, is that this was his final film before he passed away. Cloris Leachman has a very small part in the movie, but the parts that she is in are quite effective.

Many people view this movie as a comedy. It is definitely not a comedy. It is a drama. If you watch closely and really pay attention to what is going on, then you'll see the difference. Eve (Ryan) is trying to balance her son and husband and caring for her father. Something that Maddy (Kudrow), a soap star and Georgia (Keaton), the head of a magazine entitled 'Georgia' will not do. They are too wrapped up in their own lives to come and help care for their dying father. Yes, the ending is a little predictable, but it is also very touching. If you're looking for a movie that has everyone getting along all the time, don't rent this. But if you want to watch a movie that shows what true family can be, rent this. Granted, many families are not like this, but hey, you never know!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that bad, not great, either
I just watched this film on DVD, and to a regular guy like myself (I think I'm pretty regular), it was not a bad experience. Maybe it's because my mom and her siblings are currently dealing with their mother right now, and the movie struck a chord...

Anyway, I thought Meg Ryan was terrific in this film. In her other films she always tried to be cute and funny. When I was younger I liked that, but then I found her boring. But she's good in this one as the middle child who has the (mis)luck of caring for her dying father. Keaton, on the other hand, is totally unconvincing as either a magazine mogul or first daughter, and she had no screen presence at all; plus her outfit and makeup, which are meant to make her character look younger than the actress herself, are a disaster. Kudlow does what she does best: playing a dumb, clueless blonde.

As for the story, it has certain charms, but ultimately falls apart because it's confusing and melodramatic. (Be sure to watch a deleted scene on the DVD.) As some reviewers pointed out all too often the movie seems directionless, and the on-screen chemistry of the three sisters is rather lacking. Funny Evie keeps asking about the name of a "bland" actress from the 50s; the movie just gets more and more bland. But Ryan is good enough that she keeps the film moving and makes me like her again.

1-0 out of 5 stars How could it be THIS bad?
Damn, with this cast, and with Nora Ephron, how could they make a movie that's this terrible? And the saddest thing is that it turned out to be Walter Matthau's last movie cuz he died shortly after the filming. I figured the negative reviews might be wrong, that it really couldn't be all THAT awful - but I didn't finish watching it. Clicked off the TV and went to bed with a good book. Sheesh, what a shame. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A mind like a dimond-David Lynch
Every scene in this fantastic series is overflowing with unconventional humor, twisted fear, raging evil, and quircky characters. There has never been a better show on television. From Coopers passion for coffe, cherry pie, and Tibet, to a guest appearance in drag by David Duchovney, Twin Peaks offer nothing ordinary. There takes a certain personality to fully enjoy the humor of this show. I love each and every member of this show. Lynch was able to capture their simplicity along with their excentricities, and he opened them up to you as though they were people in your own town. The question isn't who killed Laura Palmer. If that is all you cared about, then you missed the purpose of the show. The brilliant mind of David Lynch gave the world a look into worlds within our world, and dared us to be scared. He dared us to be a little bit crazy. To this day, there is no one in the world who scares me more than BOB.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Dale's Journey Continues...
The "Twin Peaks" saga captivates with dark intensity tinged with left-field humor. Special Agent Dale Cooper is my favorite Maclachlan role, even as I discover this series ten years later. You can't stop now; this tape only makes you anxious to see the rest of what happens! Beyond who killed Laura Palmer...WHERE IS BOB? To be continued up through episode 29!!! It'll freak you out, in that bizarre twisted way only Lynch's "Twin Peaks" and Dale Cooper can!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Series is Great--The VHS Tapes Are Unwatchable!
BEWARE!! I know that it's going to be hard to wait for the rest of the episodes to be released to DVD (especially if you've already purchased and watched the first seven episodes on DVD), but trust me, wait for DVD. You'll end up saving yourself a lot of time and energy. Don't try to struggle through it--just wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it in good condition. You'll be glad you did, especially when you come across the more "shocking" and exciting scenes in episodes 10-14.

3-0 out of 5 stars weird meets weirder
Twin Peaks is undoubtably a whodunnit masterpiece, with plot twists and intriguing characters at every turn. I enjoyed the originality and suspense of the first 5 episodes, however, by episode 6 the bizarre world that Lynch created was just too much to take. What was once intriguing becomes a redundant bore. By episode 9 you are more than ready for the series to be over with and the loose ends to be tied up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting and mind melting
If you see one you have to see them all. The best series ever. It draws you in and welcomes you to the beautiful world of David Lynch and Laura Palmer. It is dramatic, quirky and seductive. Once you start watching you'll never want to stop. Fire Walk with Me (the prequel to the series) is also wonderful because you get a chance to meet Laura Palmer and know her in all her characters glory. Makes you wish that Sheryl Lee would have gotten more time in the limelight. She puts on an excellent performance. I recommend watching the series first. The soundtracks for both the series and the film are absolutely hypnotic and I recommend them both. If you are looking for an alternate reality, welcome to mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twin Peaks at its intriguing brilliancy
The start of the intrigue and the mystery is presented in the first 5 episodes- the characters are introduced and the atmosphere is set. Mesmerising soundtrack, with Audrey's theme being one of my favourites. This is a must for all to see- even if you are not a hardcore Twin Peaks fan, perhaps after watching the first five you will be. Enjoy and fall into it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best TV Series EVER!
There's nothing more I need to add to what anyone else has already said about this groundbreaking, brilliant television series. Other than its existence gave me hope for the, otherwise, bland world of network television. Its cancellation dashed those hopes and confirmed my bleak opinion about network television and its viewers. Potential buyers of this series might want to check for a DVD release before buying it. This video series is recorded in EP mode, making it slightly grainy and fuzzy (even on the best players). Being that Twin Peaks is so visually (as well as aurally) amazing, I think it was kind of a rip-off, that its Extended Play recording wasn't made clear by the manufacturers. If there's never a better version released, the series is so unbelievably great, that ANY version is better than none. Just watch it anyway you can! Remember: "The owls are not what they seem."

5-0 out of 5 stars Twin Peaks is a harrowing and gripping story...brilliant!
I watched Twin Peaks for the first time this summer with my newly found beloved. I wasn't sure what to expect of it, being an early 90's TV series I was expecting some simular to the pulp series "The X-Files", Which wouldn't have been a bad thing. But I soon foud out it was something much more harrowing, gripping and meaningfull. The depth that Lynch takes it to is fantastic, as are the actors and well there is nothing negative about the first series, the second series go's of on a bit of a tangent, but is still worth watching, especailly the last few episodes.
All I can say is that I will always have fond memory's of watching this brilliant show.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best thing happened ever
This series is truly the best thing ever to happen to this planet. For all of you out there who doesn't know this: The series consist of 30 episodes and a film (Twin Peaks - Fire walk with me). Episode 1 (The pilot) and 9 (the first of season 2) is 90 minutes each and the rest is 45 minutes long. The film is about 2 hours and 10 minutes. It all begins with the discovery of Laura Palmer's body. In the beginning it seems like just another detective story, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't want to give away too much, but it builds from there to the grand finale at the end...

Just buy this...It's worth all the money. It's not easy to come by so buy it as soon as you can. The only thing you should be aware is that if you buy the boxed set or even separate tapes of this, you won't get the pilot episode. It's not for sale!!!! There is a pilot episode out there, but it's the "european version" which means it have a different ending, so the ending of the pilot doesn't match the beginning of episode 2. (Actually the pilot is listed as episode 0 and the second episode is 1 etc). So don't be fooled. It says "episode 1" on the cover, but it's actually no.2. The only way you can watch the original pilot episode with its original ending is on TV. I've heard that it's going to be released on DVD with the pilot, but you shouldn't count on it...

Well enough of the facts!! The whole thing is 26 hours and 10 minutes long and I've seen it 15 times, so you should too. (It's true, I've seen it 15 times and I'm not tired of it yet).

Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars More technical information for British buyers
Since writing the review 'technical information for British buyers' I have upgraded my video player and now the all the videos play in colour. So its your call if you want to order them from Britain. I now have the full set and am delighted with the quality of the videos. Its upgraded rating is now 5 stars.

They should have stopped after the first series of Twin Peaks. The first series all ties up nicely at the end and is one of the weirdest and most original murder mysteries of all time. The second series loses its way a bit but it does have its moments and the ending is, well, just what you would expect from Twin Peaks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars possibly the best thing David Lynch has ever done
For all the justifiable praise David Lynch received for directing (and co-writing) the pilot episode of Twin Peaks, no one has convinced me that he's ever done a finer directing job than this installment. This was, of course, the episode which introduced the little dancing man and the red-curtained room into the show, and it was a bold signal that Lynch was unafraid to take film into new and unusual territory. That he did so in the typcially conservative setting of network television is even more remarkable.

Attempting a summary of how this episode fits into the overall storyline would likely take longer than the space alloted here, but it should be remembered that the mystery of "Who killed Laura Palmer?" was never really the point of the show. The mystery it posed was really just a device to move the plot along so that we could get to know the characters, and in this respect Lynch excels. The focus of the episode is Agent Cooper's unconventional investigative tactics, but what we remember is what the process of the investigation reveals about Cooper and those around him.

We remember little moments like Cooper's joyfuul exclamation, "Damn good coffee. And hot!" These little moments are what defines character, and when you strip away everything else from Twin Peaks, character is what remains. These people are in varying degress loving, petty, deceptive and endearing. In this respect they are more like all of us than might be apparent from the first glance. David Lynch's greatest gift is that he understands this and has the skill to put it on screen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars David Lynch created Laura Palmer
There is a short flash-back intercut in this episode that made me love the world of Twin Peaks. The flash-back when James remembers Laura, starring Sheryl Lee. She was the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely enchanting & nerve tingling!
This movie is one of the best! from Laura Palmers day to day good girl, bad girl personas to "BOB's" nightly visits to the small seemingly innocent town of Twin Peaks this is a must see for horror, fantasty movie lovers. a definate 5 star movie. David Lynch has a way to catch his veiwers attention with the exploits of Laura Palmer & the town of Twin Peaks & the evils that lay under it! this is a mix between Twilight Zone & the X-files ...

Read more
