4-0 out of 5 stars An Hysteric Collection
Animation is a powerfully persuasive medium, and it is surprising to see that it has rarely been used for political purposes in the United States.

Greg Ford has collected animated rarities including campy "I Like Ike" spots (done by a well known studio), the very odd A POLITICAL CARTOON (the only feature film appearance of Bugs Bunny in the Seventies) and the best available print of HELL BENT FOR ELECTION, the first UPA cartoon (directed by Chuck Jones and done for the AFL-CIO to support Roosevelt's fourth term.) Watch this one to see what we take for granted: the film promises Social Security, worker's compensation, and the G. I. Bill!

This is a very good sampler of a very strange genre. CARTOONGATE is social history as well as animation; the cartoons present the spirit of the times better than contemporary live action films. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the five fully animated Looney Tunes movies
Chuck Jones' The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie came out in September of 1979. Chuck Jones directed some of the funniest shorts in the history of filmmaking, and this 1979 feature-length compilation includes many of his best cartoons. Among the 11 shorts shown in their entirety are the classics Hare Way to the Stars, Robin Hood Daffy, Duck Amuck(quite possibly the greatest cartoon ever made), Ali Baba Bunny, Bully for Bugs and What's Opera Doc? which are still hilarious as they were when first released well over 50 years ago. However, some viewers questioned why other greats like Rabbit of Seville were deleted. Amongst the classic cartoons is some new animation of Bugs from Chuck Jones recalling his exploits with Daffy, Marvin Martian, Elmer Fudd and Wile E. Coyote whom also has a confrontation with The Road Runner in a 20 minute montage which was also great as well. Also, the wascally wabbit's explanations of chases was hysterical. Also, the beginning credits and ending credits were funny with the That's All Folks trying to curtail the movie at start and near the end and Bugs getting irked and puts a NOT or a NOT QUITE between That's All. At the end, Bugs sits on the WB logo smiling saying "Eat Your Heart Out Boit Reynolds" and That's Really All Folks!. This movie is highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Of The Bugs Bunny Movies!
Very dull, seems like it lasts forever. Trust me here people, you'll be shutting this one off, ten minutes into it. Yes, it's that bad!
You wanna see a good movie, then go buy or rent Gigli. Totally brilliant!!!!
Avoid.
Pogo has spoken!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-notch, it should only be released on DVD
Shortly after this came out, the media was swamped with well-meaning attacks on the violence in children's programming, much of which was directed at such classic cartoons as featured here - clearly a wrong-headed knee-jerk reaction gone too far. Perhaps that is why WB never re-released it on DVD. As it is, it is a prized member of my VHS collection, but I'd really like a newer one.

On the other hand, what I wouldn't like is the politically correct editing that started appearing in WB cartoon anthologies released after this one. For that alone, I despair of ever seeing this released in its original form again. In a post-Columbine world, I suppose such temerity is to be expected, but it's simply wrong to butcher such masterpieces of the animators' art.

But enough about that...

This is, to me the definitive WB cartoons. The only thing that could have improved it was more of the same, plus some other often overlooked characters such as the 3 bears. I've always been a huge fan of the late Chuck Jones and his Roadrunner cartoons in particular. This video has (almost?) all of them, grouped to run sequentially. As previously noted, some of the cartoons included here are on other WB collections, where their questionable editing for content is quite evident.

If you're an adult who can realize that when Wile E. Coyote falls 2000 feet, followed by an anvil, what's on display are Chuck Jones' artistry and comic genius rather than anything remotely related to reality, the you're in the target demographic. Let's face it, these cartoons with their somewhat dated references don't belong to the Columbine generation, they belong to us old-timers who grew up with them - and we deserve to be able to see them.

And that, succinctly, is what this is - the best of the best, without a post-modern social conscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone who gives this 1 star is loonier than the movie!
Chuck Jones is a master and has the funniest cartoons ever created. Bugs Bunny narrates this hilariously looney movie. This tape includes:

DUCK AMUCK-- An absolute classic! One of the best cartoons ever made! And that's HIGH praise!

WHAT'S OPERA DOC?-- Just as good! One of Bugs Bunny's finest performances, not to mention Elmer Fudd's!

DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24TH 1/2 CENTURY-- This is so funny, every second of it has you laughing at something else, if it doesn't than your still laughing at the last gag! Cartoon Network made a TV show about Duck Dodgers and it's really funny but not close to being as funny as this!

HARE-WAY TO THE STARS-- One of Marvin the Martian's funniest performance. It is topped by DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24TH 1/2 CENTURY but Daffy provides most of the laughs in THAT one.

ALI BABA BUNNY-- Every cartoon in this is funny! And this one is no exception. It is FUNNY!!!!!!

ROBIN HOOD DAFFY-- "I'm Robin Hood, and I'm very good at avoiding the sherrif's eye!" Or so Daffy says. But Porky Pig is not convinced that he's who he says he is. This biggest hoot is the gag where Daffy is swinging down to the Sherrif and planning to steal his gold, but he bumps into every tree there. Another one of the best parts is the end.

Not to mention all the Road Runner cartoons in it!
The only complaint I have is where Bugs is naming his "FATHERS" and included are: Tex Avery, Robert Mckimson, Friz Freleng and Chuck Jones. And that's all fine and dandy! But what about Bob Clampett??? He did as much as the others! And Ben Hardaway may not have directed too many cartoons with the hare (two, actually) but he was the original creator of Bugs and so she be included as one of Bugs' fathers.
Buy this! That's all I have left to say! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hare-y Christmas, everybody!
If you're going to watch a Looney Tunes TV special (most of which [stink] compared to the true classics that inspired them) watch this. It's great! 3 all new cartoons: "The Fright Before christmas", in which Bugs Bunny and his nephew, Clyde, are awaiting Santa Claus, and end up with Taz instead. "Bugs Bunny's Christmas Carol" is a good retelling of "A Christmas Carol", and "Freeze Frame" is a very funny Roadrunner cartoon. Arguably some of the best modern Looney Tunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Looney Christmas
The late Friz Freleng does a great job with his retelling of "A Christmas Carol" with Porky as Bob Cratchitt, Bugs Bunny as the Ghost, and Yosemite Sam as Scrooge. In another sequence, the Tasmanian Devil plays Santa. And of course, let's not forget Chuck Jones, who shows the Coyote chasing the Road Runner in the snow (thanks to Wile E's Acme Snow Maker, which he purchases since roadrunners don't like snow!). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Out of this world!
This video is FANTASTIC! Not only does it star my favorite Looney Tune, Marvin, it also has some other funny cartoons on it.
Oh yeah, for all you fellow Marvin (and Daffy Duck) lovers out there, here's some news. In 2003, Cartoon Network is bringing out a "Duck Dodgers" series on tv. Starring Marvin Martian Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and introducing a new Looney Tunes character, the Queen of Mars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Isn't That Lovely, Now I am going to see Venus
I recently purchased Marvin The Martian Space Tunes 2000 Edition. This collection is an combination of two smaller videos released by Warner Brothers, Space Tunes (1998), and 50 Years on Earth, celebrating Marvin the Martian's 50th Birthday. If you have these two videos, this bigger collection is not for you. As for me, I loved it. It contains 12 cartoons, 11 by Chuck Jones and 1 by Friz Freleng. Chuck Jones created an love with Science Fiction in his cartoons. Throughout the golden era of Warner Brothers, Chuck Jones put numerous cartoons into the unthinkable. From an creature to first step on the Moon (Haredevil Hare), to twisting love of cop shows into space (Rocket Squad). 10 of the 12 cartoons reflect Chuck Jones surrealistic mind into the Milky Way. The other cartoons also show some honesty, Lumber Jack Rabbit, (Warner Brothers only ever 3-D Cartoon to be released, by Chuck Jones), and Hyde and Go Tweet by Friz Freleng (among his favorite supernatural feelings of Jekyl and Hyde). It features zany cartoons like Duck Dodgers In The 24th 1/2 Century, to Mad As A Mars Hare, the final cartoon with Marvin The Martian in the Golden Era of Animation (1930's to 1960's). It is an must have collection for the kiddies, and ignitions you into the Toon Stratosphere of Comedy. Isn't That Lovely.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas classic...
Over the past few days, I've gotten into the Christmas spirit (already; as of this review, it's only mid-November), so I figured I'd review one of my favorite holiday memories now available on DVD.

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is undeniably my favorite animated Christmas special. A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph and Frosty are great, of course, but the Grinch is the cream of the crop. Wonderful narration by Boris Karloff, immaculate animation and that special "Christmas vibe" you get when you're watching or listening to something really special; what's not to like? This is an essential piece of holiday history for your collection.

There's nothing I can really say to make you buy this disc; you've seen it by now and chances are, unless you're the Grinch himself, you absolutely adore it. What I can say is that this particular DVD makes an already perfect Christmas special even better. Not only do you get a few wonderful features that deal with the making of the the Grinch and a few fun games for the kids, but also "Horton Hears a Who," another wonderful cartoon made by animation genius, Chuck Jones.

The review written by Amazon.com summed it up perfectly with just one sentence - this is one of the best Christmas gifts you can get for YOURSELF.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch !
Since I was 12 years old I have looked forward to seeing the annual telecast of How the Grinch Stole Christmas on tv. Now that I own the video I have watched this ageless animated classic so many times I've had to replace the video twice ! The main character is the Grinch - he's lean and green and OH SO MEAN ! But he has a charm all his own and he decides to steal Christmas away from the sweet little folks in Whoville so he won't have to tolerate their singing and happiness. He steals their trees and toys and decorations -- even their Who Roast Beast and the last can of Who Hash ! But still the spunky little Who folk celebrate Christmas by holding hands and singing joyfully. I get a lump in my throat EVERY time the moment comes where the Grinch realizes he HASN'T stolen Christmas after all. Christmas is a season of the heart -- you can't buy it in a store or hang it on a tree. Buy the video and share this wonderful classic with anyone from age 2 to 92 ! I guarantee they will love it. I am 43 years old and I plan to watch it again when I go home from work today. Just writing this review makes me want to enjoy the video all over again !

1-0 out of 5 stars And all the viewers cried "boo who who who"....
Everything you read is true! This Grinch is yellow and drab. The disk lacks the wonderful bright colors that everyone has a right to expect when buying the DVD version of a TV special they could see every year for free. Not that there is anything wrong with original--it's fabulous, 5-stars as far as Christmas specials go. But this version is thoroughly ruined by bad mastering. Wait for the re-release. Don't get caught! The correction is probably on its way and you can be sure they won't sneak it out--it will have new packaging, probably some new extras, and be clearly marked "remastered".

If you own the DVD and have your doubts (some reviewers seem to), try this: Take a look at the documentary extra hosted by Troy McClure. Throughout the documentary, they run clips of the Grinch in the background where the color is RIGHT! A beautiful bright-green Grinch--just like you remember. Compare that to the main feature (the thing you actually paid for), where he is washed out and nearly yellow.

After living 15 years in Denmark I really came to miss some of the Christmas specials from my youth in the USA. I suppose anybody in the US with cable gets quite sick of these, but for me, the Grinch and Charlie Brown's Christmas were always an important part of building the Christmas spirit. Well, the spirit here seems to be all about greed and incompetence; sell the defective version this year, then sell the corrected version to the same people next year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC CLASSIC!
This is just one of the great holiday classics from the sixties. A true holiday treat that never goes out of style. Also a true classic treat from the seventies "Horton hears a who". A must for any collector. The air dates for the Grinch from the sixties are as follow.
CBS 7:00 - 7:30 Sunday 12/18/66
CBS 7:00 - 7:30 Sunday 12/17/67
CBS 7:00 - 7:30 Sunday 12/22/68
CBS 7:30 - 8:00 Sunday 12/21/69
Buy it, a Christmas treat for always.

4-0 out of 5 stars As Dour as You Want to Be
One of Christmas specials' enduring images is Max the dog, done up like a reindeer trudging up the mountain hauling the enormous bag of presents and trees. After not having seen this in quite some time, and not since Jim Carrey's version, it was great to return to one of Chuck Jones' masterpieces. As the marvelous Boris Karloff narrates, the Grinch comes to life reminding us that he was considerably more dour initially than the wild barely contained slapstick Carrey brought to the table. The famous Grinch song moves us slowly along like a black sludge as the Grinch endeavors to steal the commercial trappings of Christmas from the Who village. In the end, of course, good triumphs and the Grinch repents his ways and gets the picture of the holidays as a 'feeling' rather than material things. Still holds up well after all these years as it gets introduced to every new generation. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
This was one of 5 movies I ordered for my grandchildren. What a disappointment. The movie is 30 minutes long and not really a movie. More like "cliff notes" version of what the story is. I guess I missed reading the write up of what this is, I expected a movie for the kids. Never again

5-0 out of 5 stars My 7 Year Old Loves It
This is a very good adaptation of the Kipling story. It is told in a strong and vivid way.

My children both like the Disney "Jungle Book," but that didn't prevent them from taking to this at once. My seven year old boy has watched it nearly every day since getting it. He even took it to school to have his class watch it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few good adaptations
As with Riki-Tiki Tavi, Chuck Jones once again made a masterpiece. Unlike the Disney-ized version, this goes along very well with the original story. Great animation and story telling. Bagherra has always been my favorite Jungle Book character and his scene with Mowgli, talking about "men's tears" was great! This is a must have! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Loony Toon clips from "crime" cartoons with Bugs and Company
This TV special has Porky Pig hosting ala Alfred Hitchcock a series of clips from classic Warners Bros. "crime" cartoons. Bugs Bunny is the star of most of these clips, but some other cartoon stars are included as well: "Bugs and Thugs" (1954), where Bugs thinks he is getting in to cab but it is really Rocky and Mugsy's getaway car; "Baby Buggy Bunny (1954), finds the midget gangster Baby-Faced Finster pulling a bank robbery and then disguising himself as a baby in a buggy, who Bugs happens to find; "Big House Bunny" (1950), has Bugs burrowing into Sing Song Prison, where (Yosemite) Sam the guard thinks the rabbit is an inmate; "Operation Rabbit" (1952) has a rare pairing of Bugs and Wile E. Coyote, who constructs a flying saucer to help make the rabbit dinner; "Compressed Hare" (1961) offers the Coyote another try at Bugs, this time using a 10,000,000,000-volt electric magnet; "All Abir-r-rd" (1950) has Slyvster after Tweeny again; "Catty Cornered" (1966), is a Tom & Jerry cartoon where getting the mouse out of his hole proves a major problem for Tom and his friend; and "Hare Lift" (1952) bankrobber (Yosemite) Sam makes Bugs fly the world's biggest airplane to help make his escape. "The Bugs Bunny Mystery Special" is not bad for a clip show, but my preference is always going to be for the cartoons in their entirety. The two cartoons with Wile E. Coyote going after Bugs are the best on this tape. But overall these are clips from second level Loony Toons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Politically Incorrect!
"Private Snafu" was intended as a training-guide for American soldiers during World War Two. ("Snafu" meaning Situation Normal All F...ed Up!) It also provided "training" for some of Warner Brothers' greatest cartoon talents. Many sight-gags, jokes, & plots used in later Warner's cartoons of the late '40's & 50's were actually lifted from the "Snafu" cartoons. (The TNT in the piano gag used in several Bugs Bunny cartoons & the air-force made of mosquitos are examples of "swipes" from "Private Snafu.") There's a great deal of satire in the writing as well, thanks to Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, who actually wrote most of the scripts.

There's historical significance as well. These cartoons, uncensored, reflect the attitudes America had of the Axis at that time. Many of the words & descriptions would be deemed offensive by today's standards, but it's important to remember the times & the context from which these were made. (It's also important to remember that for every negative stereotype Americans held towards the Germans, Italians, & most especially the Japanese, the Axis held towards Americans, as well as the British, the Chinese, & the Russians!) I"m Asian-American by descent & though if I were to see Asians (actually, in Snafu's case, Japanese, since China was on "our" side) stereo-typed today the way they were in the Snafu cartoons, I would be offended. However, watching the way they're drawn in these (period-specific) cartoons...well, it's kind of funny! (It's a guilty pleasure! And again, let me repeat, this was war! I've seen Axis propaganda & they didn't pull any punches when it came to Americans!)

The animation is excellent. However, since these cartoons were intended for soldiers, they are not recommended viewing for children! (Besides the racial stereo-types, there's plenty of suggestive dialogue & situations. Funny stuff, as long as you're over 10 years old!) However, if you're a cartoon fan, a historian, or if you just like a good (guilty) laugh (& there's lots of that!), then this series is definately recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars cartoons go to war
I don't know about you, but I'm fascinated by these propaganda cartoons of the early 40's, and I can't help but wonder what the axis would have done if they had placed as much value on animation as Hollywood did. This tape stands up to repeated viewing. I would highly recommend this tape to anyone with an interest in vintage cartoons. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Movie
In case anyone didnt know, this is an animated film made in the late 80s. Daffy Duck inherets money from his rich uncle and starts a ghost hunting company with Bugs and Porky. Although Daffy is the star, all the classic WB characters apear in this film. This is a pretty good movie, as it combines a bunch of classic Warner Bros cartoons together into one story with new animation. The new footage is nicely animated, although the difference between it and the old cartoons are quite noticable. However, the writers do a good job of making tons of old cartoons flow together as one story.
This is a good movie, but it is by no means "one of the best animated movies of all time" as other reviewers have said. Its a good movie of course and it entertains, but it is not a classic animated feature. Why, it has no comparision by the countless classic Disney features released decades before this. But if you take it for what it is, you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest Animated Film of All Time!!!!
This is not only the best Loony Toons film, but quite possibly the best animated film of all time!!! I remember when this movie first came out in 1988, I rented it CONSTANTLY until my parents finally bought it for me. I have gone through several copies and am waiting for my latest copy to arrive in the mail. This is THE BEST movie ever!!! It is hilarious and GREAT for halloween coming up!! Buy this movie! It rocks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lazy, but Still Worth While
This movie is lazy because there isn't much new footage, but it's OK because the shorts they put in it are pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars DAFFY DAFFY DAFFY DAFFY DAFFY!
This is my favorite Daffy Duck movie. It all start like this a millionaire leaves Daffy money but he must use the money for good and needs to provide a service to people and if Daffy thinks of selfish aims the millionaire (ghost) will make the money disappear so Daffy opens an exorcism agency and Porky, Bugs, and Sylvester work with him and they have to attend cases of ghosts and monsters in a very original way I really recommend this video why WB doesn't start releasing classics like this on DVD, Fantastic Island (Daffy's First Movie 1983), Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie, The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie and all of those cartoons on video I'm sure that many kids will buy at as many other adults trying to remember their childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST FULL-LENGTH ANIMATED MOVIE FROM WB!
This is one of the best if not the best full-length animated movie from Warner Brothers Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety and Sylvester open a kind of ghostbuster agency and try to solve some cases really really good I would even dare to say an Animated Classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Grandchildren
This is a great video for grandchildren in the age range of 2-6 year. Its a splendid way to introduce children to the delights of classical music. Our grandchildren insisted on taking our copy back to their home. We also recommend other puppet videos by Jim Gamble - including a) Peter and the Wolf; b) Peer Gynt; c) Nutckracker Suite; and d) Hansel & Gretel. They are all excellent and the best of their kind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Witch Hazel is no match for Bugs Bunny!
"Bugs Bunny's Howl-Oween Special" is one hilarious cartoon telvision program. Great treat for young and old alike who love Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, and that hair pin-losing witch Witch Hazel. I own it, and must have watched it over 40 times in the last 3 years. Hilarious when Witch Hazel turns into a vampire and Bugs says "Abra Cadabra" and the vampire becomes a bat, and Bugs doesn't realize it. Bugs is sitting up in bed, and sees the bat flying across close by. He says, "Golly! What big mosquitoes they have around here. Hold still, you little devil." He smashes it on the floor. The bat manages to get up and fly out of the window. Bugs, reading the book on magic words and phrases, says "Hocus Pocus". The bat transforms back into the vampire and falls into the water below. This is just a sample of the hilarity in this video. Sounds good? Why not? You'll be spooked up in far amounts...in hilarity, that is. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

2-0 out of 5 stars Who hacked up the cartoons??
I really want to know what happened to the ORIGINAL version I saw when I was child, on television???? This has SOME of the bits and pieces, but in my opinion, has been poorly 'sewn' together into a mockery of the first TV Special. Am I the only one who can tell where the cartoon has been pieced together due to poor colour matching and voices? I am disappointed, as I had hoped I found THE original cartoon I so loved when I was young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bugs!
Bugs Bunny at his finest hour the video start like this Bugs Bunny is trick or treating and goes to the house of the witch (I don't remember her name but the only witch that appears on these cartoons) he's costume is of a witch and when he appears at her door she thinks he is a witch but then he takes the costume off well i'm not going to write the whole story I just recommend this video I have probably seen it 10 times it's very good try to see it at least once in your life. ...
