5-0 out of 5 stars When Pigs Fly
Well, perhaps you won't have to wait that long to see this gem of a British comedy from the late Nineties. Good thing, too, if you like this sort of thing: quirky, smart, fresh, and completely disarming. It seems to have come in rather below the radar of most film viewers in the U.S., and it's still (as of Sept. '03) available only on VHS in the States. Start lobbying now for a DVD viewable in America, 'cause you're going to want to own it, and you're going to want to show it to all your friends--all, that is, who might be in the mood for something offbeat and weird. (A Jewish-British quest romance, anyone?) But the film eludes simple categorization. It's hard to imagine how any casual flight of whimsy could have produced this particular, tender riff on the classic coming-of-age situation. Be forewarned, though, guys: it's a bad choice for a date movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leon The Pig Farmer
This was a strange movie, but I love it. It was very funny. And the reilgous jokes were not that bad. Mark Frankel did a great job. I love the whole part were he is at the bowling alley. When he got hit in the face by the ball, I never thought I was going to stop laughing. It was a great movie. Everyone should see it. I would buy it for a friend

Thanks
Rbecca Brown

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT, GREAT MOVIE!
A wonderful, funny, thoughtful movie with Jewish themes, concerning identity, family and love. Strongly recommended. I bought this movie several years ago after seeing it at the Palm Springs film festival. Also has a very good "jazz" sound tract.

5-0 out of 5 stars A not-so-kosher romantic comedy
If you have strong religious views better skip this one. If not, this is a hilarious little British gem done in the best Richard Lester tradition, with lots of talent and practically no money at all.. Wonderful performances all around (notably the late Mark Frankel) but Maryam D'Abo steals the show as the ultimate goy sex kitten from hell! Great fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only once in Awhile...
Only once in awhile does a movie come along that stirs me up. It's not always a big blockbuster movie like Lord of The Rings or Star Wars. Sometimes, more often than not it is the little guy movies, the ones that are pushed aside in favor of big fancy dazzle movies. This movie is one such movie. I had never honestly heard about it, but one night, while staying up very, very late, it came on TV and I was very interested. Being a long time Kelsey Grammer fan I immediately decided to go beyond the exhaustion I was feeling and dig in to watch this movie. Well, it turned out to be a movie that instantly gripped me and held me to the end. The humour is mostly dry and subdued, but never dull. And the story is great. Being a struggling author myself I found the story to be quite amusing. The next morning I decided to order the movie so I could own a copy for myself. This is now one of my favorite movies, and I would recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Charmer
Kelsey Grammer stars in a funny, warm comedy about a down-on-his-luck writer who decides to make a few bucks authoring children's books. Just one thing - he can't stand children! Yeah, it's a bit contrived, but it works, and the cast does an excellent job in maintaining a light, funny tone throughout the film.

Howard Spitz (Grammer) has a surprise hit on his hands, and hires a stand-in to take his place dealing with the tykes who inevitably want to meet a successful children's author. Luckily, he meets an woman who has an adorable young daughter who helps him get over his dislike of small children (almost). Spitz finally owns up to his deception at the climatic scene, with the help of his little friend.

BTW, the credits have a few very funny bloopers, so stick around. And Grammer makes an inside joke about sitcoms, when he considers how easy it would be to write such a screenplay. After all, a sitcom can be in any number of places, such as a Boston bar, etc. Funny.

Before I stumbled on this film, I'd never heard of it, which is a bit of a surprise considering how enjoyable it is. A neglected winner, perhaps?

Recommended if you want to watch a film with your own little loved ones that won't drive you mindless with boredom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, fun and charming! Good for the entire family.
This is an absolutely charming story about a down-on-his luck mystery writer named Howard Spitz, portrayed by Kelsey Grammer. With bills piling up and no money coming in, he discovers that there's money to be made in writing children's books. He creates a character named Crafty Cow, complete with a Columbo-type trenchcoat. The Crafty Cow novels are a hit and Howard must make public appearances to promote his book. One small problem - he can't stand being around children!

Howard hires this rather nerdy fellow to impersonate him for the book tour and television appearances. There's a variety of comic situations involving the imposter and others in Howard's life.

Howard befriends a delightful youngster while researching children's books at the local library. Of course, the little girl has an attractive single mom, which presents a love interest for Howard.

For those who only see Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane, this is a nice change. The movie is fun, uplifting, and a good view for the entire family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarmingly funny story!!
I found out about this film through being a huge fan of Kelsey Grammer and I have to say I thouroughly enjoyed it. Kelsey's character was loveable despite his grumpy exterior and he and the little girl made a great team. My only wish was that they would take the story a little further and develope the relationship between Howard and Laura (Amanda Donahoe) before the end of the film instead of leaving it to our imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars I give this movie two thumbs up!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie not only for the laughs but for the story line and the simple message. It was very well written and filmed. A great family movie. My 8 year old son enjoyed it as well. Would recommend it to anyone! (o: ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More like "Nightbore"
This movie is a complete rip-off of Nightmare on Elm Street. A killer kills people in their dreams. A dream psychologist (Elizebeth Hurley) tries to stop him. The only differance is that this movie isn't scary at all. The plot is impossible to follow, and nothing is explained clearly. The cover art may look interesting (especially with Hurley on it) but it is nothing but a huge mess. Steer clear of this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, and thats all you'd expect!
This movie has been trashed by almost every reveiwer, and yet they almost all make the same conclusion: It's funny and enjoyable. The plot wasn't great but it wasn't what you wanted! The movie was funny for all the reasons Glick has been funny since his first appearence on the Martin Show, and since his early roots as a Skip E Lowe spoof on SCTV and SNL. Martin is the master at getting in to a character and he does so brilliantly, with Glick! This is never short on laughs and is one of the funniest movies ever! Don't come in expecting Masterpeice Theatre, because thats just not what anyone should want from Martin Short. It is more of a spoof of a movie then it is one! For heavens sake he was an SCTV member, it's never going to get serious in the room! In addition he does a hysterical impression David Lynch!

4-0 out of 5 stars Glick Mania
Martin Short has really found so many ways of making people all over laugh. Whether it was from his days from Saturday Night Live as Ed Grimley, or in many of his well-recognized acting roles from The Three Amigos, and Father Of The Bride. Well, he has put that full forward with his latest characture, Jiminy Glick. The nutty television interviewer was a debut regular from Martin's short-lived talk show in 1999, and on the more successful spinoff, Comedy Central's Primetime Glick. With all that surprise hype, it is just strange that there actually is a movie about Jiminy Glick.

Jiminy Glick in La La Wood, tells the story of Jiminy, and his trip to the Toronto Film Festival. He takes along his wife, Dixie, and two of his four sons, Matthew & Modine. His other two sons Morgan and Mason aren't featured in this movie. In the film, Jiminy scores a review with a Johnny Depp-like actor named Ben Decarlo, upon a released parody film called Going, Going, Ghandi. Well, Jiminy fell asleep during the film, and pretended to enjoy it. Yet, he scores big with several other interviews from people like Steve Martin, and Rob Lowe. Yet, within that hype, he gets caught within a bad dream that he had with a hasbeen actress named Melinda Carlisle, after getting drunk from a stint with rappers. Within that, he keeps dreaming that he actually was the one who murdered Melinda, which actually turned out to be a misunderstanding. All in all, the movie is tasteful at times, but just has some silly slapstick, like Dixie slapping Jiminy in one scene after he tells her about his nightmare. The story is also funny, but could've had a better plot twist rather than just the nightmare in Jiminy's head.

I honestly don't think that a lot of people might really be interested in Jiminy Glick in La La Wood. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Martin Short's character, this would be a most amusing movie to see. Otherwise, you're just better off looking at the film when it comes to cable. Isn't that wonderful.
