3-0 out of 5 stars Cute...
...and corny, and anachronistic, and rife with hammy acting. And the mermaid's tail wasn't very believable, and the sand shark patently stunk.

But at least the acting was *deliberately* hammy...at least on the part of the three or four actors that I recognized by sight. (I *know* that all of 'em have enough talent to not make fools of themselves by *accident.*) And it's a great improvement over other Paramount kiddie fare (the "Josh Kirby: Time Warrior" flicks come to mind).

Watch this movie from a kid's perspective, and you'll enjoy it. Trust me on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I remember when this movie was just a little baby
I was 10 when i saw this movie and i thought it was my movie i kept dreaming of it as a baby movie holding it in my arms rocking it to sleep holding it's bottle singing to it till it sleeps on my chest i keep thinking about this movie it's to bad i was seperated from it when i got older let me tell you about the story of how we got seperated it's really sad on my 11th birthday i was planning to record it then when it was that time 8:00 pm i saw the most devestating replacement it was your a good man charlie brown. I backed away from the T.V i turned of the T.v and cried on my bed and skipped my Iresttible 11th birthday and now i'm turnover 12 and i can't forget that time it turned away from behind my back but i still love it in my heart

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for pirate lovers
We rented this for my five-year old and he loved every minute- we watched it three times in three days It is funny and action-packed without being overly violent. The premise of the story is cool and anything with Blackbeard is a hit for young pirate lovers! It was a sleeper for us since we had never heard of it. Too bad it's out of stock!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another fun, funny and long overdue Elvira adventure!
Finally! After 14 years, Elvira's second feature film debuts. It's quite different from her first, but equally entertaining. Setting out to spoof some of her favorite horror films, Cassandra Peterson and her writing partner John Paragon fuse elements of the classic Roger Corman/Vincent Price/Edgar Allen Poe films The House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum and The Tomb of Ligea into a campy farce - perfect fodder for Elvira's unique talents.

Elvira recruited Rocky Horror's Richard O'Brien as her co-star, and he gives a great performance as Lord Hellsubus. Rounding out the cast are several members of L.A.'s Groundlings comedy troupe, Mary Scheer and Mary Jo Smith. Heather Hopper is terrific as Hellsubus's doomed sister, and Scott Atkinson does an amazing job as the two faced doctor with both an aristocratic and cockney British accent.

The sets are enormous and detailed. The cinematography is virtually flawless, and there are several very well done special effects (and Elvira comments on them in the film...). Of course, Elvira's campy quips and physical humor are the stars of the show. There's also a great running gag with the stableman's bad English dubbing. All in all, this is a long overdue and highly enjoyable adventure. Well worth checking out, especially if you enjoy Elvira's first film, or if you're a fan of the Roger Corman Poe films. You might also want to read the Elvira series of paperbacks(if you can find them...), also written by Cassandra Peterson and John Paragon...Elvira Transylvania 90210, Elvira Camp Vamp, and Elvira The Boy Who Cried Werewolf....they are a lot of fun too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvira is BACK!....finally!!!
ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS is the Mistress of the Dark's long-awaited followup to her beloved first time, 1988's ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK. It has been well worth the wait, believe me!

In this loving parody of the Hammer and AIP gothic-horror films of the 60's, Elvira plays a busty entertainer circa 1851, who gets caught up in a tangle with the mysterious residents of the Castle Hellsubus. Vladimere Hellsubus (Richard O'Brien - THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW) takes a shying to Elvira when he discovers that she looks exactly like his dead wife Elura, who died under mysterious circumstances.

Together with her robust maid ZouZou (Mary Jo Smith), Elvira sets out to escape from Vladimere's evil house and pendulum, with her cunning tricks and her showstopping number "Le Music Hall".

Hilarious. Filmed entirely on location in Romania, the production values are lavish and Elvira looks as gorgeous as ever in the long-overdue sequel that will surely be relished by fans.

Also starring Scott Atkinson, Mary Scheer and Heather Hopper.

The DVD includes making-of featurette, trailer, Richard O'Brien interview and photo gallery. (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

5-0 out of 5 stars You go Girl
Thank God for Elvira, she is a dying breed. A sexy actress who is single-handedly trying to keep alive the lost art of Vaudville. When it comes to one-liner quips, sexual inuendos, sight gags, and of course boob jokes, Elvira is the Queen.

Few could argue that Haunted Hills is better than her first movie from 1988. It's just that with such a long wait between movies, expectations were so high. Kind of like Mr. Lucas' problems with Star Wars. However, this film is not complete garbage as some here would have you think.

Elvira at her age still looks better than half the actresses walking around today at half her age. Her body is still enough to make any man's eyes glued to the screen. Her comic timing is still razor sharp and throughout the movie she can even laugh at herself, which is refreshing.

What Elvira attempted to do (and she explains all this in the special features) is make a tribute to the films of Peter Lore and Vincint Price (whom the film is dedicated to.) Maybe this film wasn't as succesful because people have forgotten the old classics and wanted a more modern type comedy. I applaud Elvira for doing what she did. Movies aren't made like this anymore and it's a shame that in this day and age people have forgotten where modern horror and comedy have come from. I mean for the most part, this movie looks and feels a lot like a play on a stage.

With an excellent supporting cast (including Rocky Horror's own Riff Raff Mr. O'Brian) Elvira pulls off a good movie that will bring a few chuckles and plenty of eye candy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awful
I should say that I LOVED the first Elvira film. A classic camp, ridiculous comedy!
I was SO excited when I heard a new film had come out.
Wow - was this the biggest let down!
Its appalling - beyond bad.
Its not even so bad it's good - its just BAD.
Elvira is Elvira- the blame doesn't necessarily lie with her.
the co-stars are awful (Richard O'Brien should just bask in his Rocky glory - obviously a one-off), and the direction is terrible - I dont think the director has any understanding of comedy.
However - judging from the other reviews here, its obviously a love or hate film...

2-0 out of 5 stars Elvira Sags with "Haunted Hills"
When I rented Elvira's first movie, "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark," I did so with the lowest of expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Ironically, because I liked "Mistress of the Dark" so much, I actually went into viewing "Elvira's Haunted Hills" with raised expectations, and was summarily disappointed. Elvira (Cassandra Peterson, who also co-wrote the script) sticks with "Mistress of the Dark"'s formula of double entendres, goofy puns and silly sight gags, but her schtick doesn't have quite the same charm this time around. There are plenty of fat jokes at the expense of Elvira's maid Zou Zou (Mary Jo Smith) and "Rocky Horror"'s Richard O'Brien's role is essentially a self-parody. By the movie's final third, the humor is quite thin. There are a few laughs in "Elvira's Haunted Hills"' 90-minutes, but most are in the movie's first 30. I particularly enjoyed her musical number "Le Dance Hall." Ultimately, though, "Elvira's Haunted Hills" isn't as funny as the old Roger Corman/Hammer horrors it's spoofing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Brings new mwaning to the word "Idiotic."
Okay, this movie....oh man. This horrible clash of genres features over the top and under the top acting, idiotic characters, "special" Effects that are none too impressive and is the worst thing Isaac Hays has ever been involved with. Seriously, this is one ripe for MST3K, folks. Buy it only to torture yourself or other people. I have a long, curse-filled, spiteful review on my website, but I can't post the URL here so whatever. If you are going to buy, BUY USED. Do not waste any extra money on this thing. Spend it on a bag of Oreos or something instead. You'll be glad you did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Campy fun, but no T&A
Oblivion is a campy, fun loving Sci-Fi Western movie that doesn't try to explain itself, nor does it take itself too seriously. If you are a trekky like me, its almost worth the cost of the DVD just to hear George Takei (who plays a drunk doctor) pay hommage to "Bones" McKoy with such wonderful lines as "I'm a doctor dammit, not a magician!" Oblivion has all the stuff you would expect in a B-movie western, including the wooden hero with a problematic past, the nasty villain with a band of losers, the hostage, and the shootout. This is combined with the sci-fi laser guns and bizarre B-grade off-world creatures.

This movie has all sorts of weird scenes. The best without question (also worth the price of the movie) has to be the funeral scene with the simultaneous Bingo game taking place on the second floor. This hilarious combination of sappy funeral speeches with bingo announcements like "B-1" going on in the background is a scream.

And while this movie has a really hot black nylon chick in Musetta Vander (if you're into the Trinity "Matrix" look, get this!), it is truly missing the gratuitous T&A. Musetta (the hot siren from "O Brother Where Art Thou") is hot though, so the movie still survives.

I give it 3 stars on the B-movie scale - T&A would have brought it to a solid 4.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slower than its sequel but makes more sense.
The best of the stacks and stacks of direct-to-video junk out there.

Self-consciously campy, with stop-motion creatures, and (thankfully) good-natured, with no really objectionable stuff to speak of.

If you hear the words "low-budget" and run for the hills, pass this one up. But if you know and love AIP movies of the late 50's, it's a good bet you will enjoy this. This is as close to the feel of those that I have so far found among modern [movies].

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic, high camp... with MUSETTA VANDER
I love this movie... I first saw it eight years ago and only recently hunted it (and its sequel, Backlash) down as an exorbitantly-priced VHS, even though it meant playing it on a tiny, tinny-sounding TV/VCR.

So, it's a "Sci-Fi Western." Let me see... Was it hokey? Heck, yeah! That's what MAKES the movie. Basically, toss Clash of the Titans, the original Star Trek series, The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension, and a little Jim Henson puppetry into a blender, and you've got a fairly representative perception of what it's like. I have no idea what the budget was, but what it looks like is NOT mainstream Hollywood, NOT trendy-Indie, but very hip and quirky and campy on a well-designed shoestring budget.

The characters are waaay over the top... waaay waaay OVER over the top... even the seemingly straight-played parts by Richard Joseph Paul and Jackie Swanson (Little House on the Prairie really was this tragic, it just wasn't meant to be). And YES, George Takei pokes fun at his Star Trek pigeonholing with wincingly blatant one-liners, but it's so FUN to see him cutting loose (Sulu was awfully straight-laced). Musetta Vander is absolutely DELICIOUS as the black leather-clad, electric whip-wielding Lash. If you've always had a soft spot for really wicked women (with a Bettie Page thing going), you'll fall for her after seeing this. Carel Struycken is so freaking cool, I want to hug him. His voice (I sooo dig his voice) and kind of innocent savant demeanor (but with bits of cold practicality peeking through) reminded me of Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride.

If you live for the credits, here you go:

Directed by Sam Irvin and written by Charles Band, Peter David (I), Mark Goldstein (II), John Rheaume, and Greg Suddeth. The credits include Richard Joseph Paul as Zack Stone, Jackie Swanson as Mattie Chase, Andrew Divoff as Redeye, Meg Foster as Stell Barr, Isaac Hayes as Buster, Julie Newmar as Miss Kitty, Carel Struycken as Gaunt, George Takei as Doc Valentine, Musetta Vander as Lash, Jimmie F. Skaggs as Buteo, Irwin Keyes as Bork, Mike Genovese as Marshall Stone, Frank Roman (I) as Wormhole, Jeff Moldovan as Spanner, Joe Muzio and Craig Anthony Muzio as Two Head, Tim Miller (I) as the Stinking Turncoat, Peter David (I) as Cowhand, Nadine Emilie Voindrouh as Josephine, Sam Irvin himself as the "Whipping Boy," and a bunch of techs and extras who probably laughed and partied their way through the entire (for Pete's sake, go find a copy of the freaking film and watch it already) filming.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not as good as the first...
The two Oblivion movies are some of the best, and least known, of the Full Moon films.

This film takes place immediatly after the first. (I think they were filmed at the same time.) The main plot concerns an intergalactic bounty hunter after a sabatour wanted by the galaxicorp. The main suspect is Lash. (Played by the incredible Musetta Vander.) Zack, as sheriff, must help the bounty hunter in his quest.

The film lacks the in-jokes that made the first so fun. Julie Newmar has much more of a role in this one. (I am not certain what to think about her in this. Something about a 60+ year old woman in a form fitting outfit that is kind of frightening. Especially since she still looks good, in a weird plastic surgery Brazil-like way.)

If you liked the first, get this. If you have not seen the first movie, get that as well. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars what tha????
This has got to be, hands down, one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story of a vigilante who has erected his own electric chair to deal with "soft on crime" policies after his family is slaughtered by an early parolee. Terribly acted, terribly shot. This movie is straight up crap. I started watching it out of camp value, issac hayes, lauren hutton, heather graham...I bet all parties involved wish this poo-bomb would crawl back to the depths of hell from which it was spawned. I saw that used copies were being sold as low as 43cents...this is way too much. You should be paid to take this off of someone. I don't know what kind of compensation would be worth the cost on your humanity. Please, for your own sake! Heinous!!! You have been warned.

3-0 out of 5 stars I saw it SOLELY for Heather Graham
While this film is definitely in the "WEIRD" category, I can't call it a bad film. It is definitely low-budget, and one that 98% of the population has never heard of.

The camerawork in this film is awesome; lots of dutch angles, high/low angles, etc. which work well for the story.

The story itself is interesting, a self-appointed vigilante who runs his own death row after hours in a meat plant.

If it hadn't had Heather in it, I probably would've never seen it. ... Read more
