1-0 out of 5 stars BIG MISTAKE
I ordered: Best of Saturday Night Live (1975) and instead I got the Best of Saturday Night Live from 1992. The description says 1975, yet my order form came out 1992, and the video I received is from 1992. I didn't think to check the order form for 1975. There is obviously an error on the website, since they list something from 1992 as 1975. DO NOT ORDER THIS TAPE IF YOU WANT THE BEST OF SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE FROM 1975.

4-0 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE AYKROYD CHARACTER SKECTHES PERFORMED ON SNL!
Only characters that Dan Aykroyd played in which I remembered on Saturday Night Livetelevision history during the seventies and brief eighties. Was his skecthes of "The Coneheads" family with the father Belzar and Elwood one of the Blues Brothers character he did that's all to come through my mind for the moment!

5-0 out of 5 stars SuperSNLFan's Best Of D. Aykroyd thoughts
The Best Of Dan Aykroyd was a terrific video. I mean, you can't see these classics anymore/ as NBC doesn't show SNL reruns from 1978, you know. Not everyday do you see The French Chef cut her finger and gush all over the place. And another thing-Irwin Mainway. It killed me! Fred Garvin went too far, and Crazy Ernie was dumb. Otherwise, I recommend this video to anyone who grew up on Danny, John, Chevy, Garrett, Gilda, and the rest of the Not Ready For Prime Time Players! If you love classic comedy, this is for you. If you loved this, there are about 100 other SNL videos to choose from. Hope you'll agree that this video earns 5 out of 5 stars. Comedian Chris Rock spent several seasons on Saturday Night Live, and this compilation tape of his best moments showcases his considerable talents while unintentionally highlighting how uneven the show itself is.Even in a video selected to showcase Rock alone, he is all too often mired as the second or third banana in an SNL skit. But there are, thankfully, plenty of opportunities in this video for Rock to shine without being upstaged by other performers or left adrift by limp writing. When he appears behind the "Weekend Update" desk to deliver an editorial commentary or a news report, Rock put his considerable skills as a comedian to perfect use.And in the skits where the focus is on him, he proves himself to be adept at characterizations, such as when he dons a colossal Afro wig to become radical talk show host Nat X, host of "The Dark Side."One peculiar surprise about the video: some of the language in "Def Jam" parodies that was bleeped out for the broadcast of SNL is here presented uncensored, so while this is Chris Rock delivering perhaps his cleanest material, a few choice words are nonetheless delivered loud and clear.--Robert J. 3-0 out of 5 stars Could've Been Better
As one of "Saturday Night Live's"most famous comedians, Chris Rock created a long line of classic characters and impressions in his 3 years on the show. But many of them are missing. A few recurring sketches are here, but they are from when he hosted the show.

A lot of this dvd's best sketches have Rock as a second and even third banana. For instnace, in the "Sinatra Group" sketch (this one's my favorite), his role as 2 Live Crew star is sadly limited, as Phil Hartman shines as Frank Sinatra (though to be fair, Sinatra is supposed to be the main focus). The other Luther Campbell sketch is funny, with Phil Hartman, Mike Myers and Jan Hooks, Dana Carvey and that "Twi Peaks" guy throwing song ideas at him left and right, much to his dismay. Another thing is that even when Rock is the main focus, another character outshines him. For instance, in "The Bensonhurts Dating Game", Rock's the main focus, but Joe Pesci gets the best lines. A sad waste of talent.

The extras are better. There's another one of his hiarious "Weekend Update" commentaries, plus a better "Nat X" sketch that is from 1990, back when the show was in its prime. This is proabably the least enjoyable "SNL" dvd ever. Chris Rock is another player who deserves a volume 2.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But My Least Favorite "SNL" DVD
Chris Rock was one of the freshest, rawest comedians in "Saturday Night Live" history. Skits like "The Dark Side With Nat X", "2 Live Crew", "The Proud Pattersons" and his monologues showcase his unique flair for "urban humor". This dvd tries its best to include Rock's best moments, but unfortuneately, it caught in the muck and myer along the way.

There are about one or two things wrong with this dvd that do not make it live up to the superior retrospectives put together for Dana Carvey, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, and Adam Sandler. First up, skits like "I'm Chillin'" and "Big Toe Song" are rather pointless (the latter disgusting) and forgettable. Second, some of the best skits feature Rock as a second banana rather than the main focus. These happen to include my two favorite sketches, "The Bensonhurst Dating Game" and "The Sinatra Group". In the former, he is bested by host Joe Pesci and fellow "SNL" heavyweights Adam Sandler and Dana Carvey. In the latter, he plays Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew in a debate group led by Frank Sinatra, played by the superb Phil Hartman.

Overall, not too bad a dvd, but it could've been so much more.

4-0 out of 5 stars "You Don't Think There's a @#$&$! Rabbit In This Hat?!"
Woohoo! This is too funny! I have allways loved SNL, but this is in the tie of the third funniest SNL videos(and there's a bunch of SNL videos!). There are many memorable lines like "You bickering, name calling caller item putting awayer." or "Bite me, bite me hard. Lick my blood."(that wasn't said by Chris but it's funny. OR one of the funniest of the Chris Rock sayings "You don't think there's a @#$&$! rabbit in this hat?! See there is a @#$&$! rabbit in this hat!". Also "My turkey needs no salt!" and the hilarious stand up from the comedian himself! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because sometimes it gets too gross when it doesn't have to be.

1-0 out of 5 stars SNL (...)
This collection is an insult to Chris Rock. SNL has succeeded in even making the greatest comedian of our time look bad. Rent this first to see how bad it is before you waste your money as well as your time. Get his concert and HBO shows. This is what happens when you put a comedian from the wild in a SNL cage.... he dies. Thank God he was able to be reborn on HBO. It's just not funny. Sorry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad
This is a pretty funny DVD full of some of Chris Rock's best skits on SNL. But, beware, some of the recurring skits aren't featured at their best on this disc. The Nat X skit was the one from when he hosted the show, and definitely not as good as the ones when he was a cast member. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars EDDIE MURPHY'S GREATEST COMEDY PERFORMANCES ON SNL!
Eddie Murphy's best character skecthes performed on Saturday Night Live television history in the eighties was his "Mister Robinson's Neighbourhood", "James Brown", "Stevie Wonder", "Buckwheat" and serial killer assassin "John David Stubbs". Are simply the best over it's top to a funny comedian like Murphy himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy at his most memorable best.
That Dutch person must not understand American comedy. This video is a must for anybody whom Eddie Murphy ever made laugh. This is a wonderful set of Saturday Night Live sketches by one of the greatest comedic geniuses ever to grace SNLs stage. I wish they had more of the Buckwheat sketches, but they do have my favorite of all time: Mr. White. This makes the whole video worth buying.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buyers beware...
If you are not a Saterday Night Live fanatic, you might what to give this one a pass. Truly only for collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy at his comedic best
Murphy is in peak form in this collection of his favorite sketches. His docuparody "White Like Me" perfectly showcases his knack for inspired and humorous social commentary, while his Buckwheat impressions reduce one to tears of joy. Of particular note is the second monologue in which he impersonates Stevie Wonder. In the words of the immortal Buckwheat, "Iss a-otay." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old politics still funny today
The SNL Presidential Bash is the funniest collection of skits based on a theme (e.g. Halloween, Christmas, specific cast members). Even though all of the Clinton skits are missing(the anthology was produced during the 1992 election), the video contains skits that are funny even if you have superficial knowlege of politics. The video spans from the early years to the golden years (Carvey, Hartman, Farlye, et al.). In the early years, Chevy Chase interprets the bungly President Ford and Dan Akroyd plays a President Carter who knows exact details of every insignificant thing.

Dana Carvey is omnipresent. He is in the 1988 presidential debates between George Bush and Michael Dukakis. Jon Lovitz played Dukakis, an emotionless and short candidate who had (in the skit) a mechanical lift to elevate him to the height of the podium. Carvey's Ross Perot charicature has chronic cameos as the host of the special. Perot also had a hillarious infomercial where he explained that his salary would be based upon the growth of the country ("1% growth, I don't see a dime; I'll be ok, I've got $3 billion back home...4% growth, I get $1 billion. That still leaves you up $119 billion.)

You can watch this video over and over again. This will always be the best compilation of Saturday Night Live. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping story of a great Puerto Rican writer
"Pinero," written and directed by Leon Ichaso, tells the story of Puerto Rican playwright Miguel Pinero. Benjamin Bratt turns in a charismatic performance as the title character, and is ably supported by an outstanding group of fellow actors. Pinero's story is told in a fragmented style, and Latin music effectively accompanies the story.

The performances in the film are really special. Mandy Patinkin is a powerful presence as theatrical figure Joseph Papp. Giancarlo Esposito plays writer Miguel Algarin, and he has superb chemistry with Bratt. And I was particularly moved by Rita Moreno's portrayal of Pinero's mother; one scene between her and Bratt is particularly heartwrenching.

The film covers many important aspects of Pinero's life: his time in jail, the opening of his landmark play "Short Eyes," his Puerto Rican/"Nuyorican" identity, and more. Ichaso paints his canvas with some powerful and disturbing visuals.

Despite the many good aspects of the film, I didn't find it wholly satisfying; in a sense I find Pinero the man even more of an enigma after seeing the film. But this is still a film well worth seeing.

4-0 out of 5 stars the voice of the nuyorican poets
He was a poet & an actor more so he was an artist, this film captures the essence of this brillant writer. Benjamin Bratt
becomes Pinero, you see pinero's spirit take on that of bratt.
It's hard to believe there isn't much on Miguel Pinero's life,
finally with this Film we get an window into the world of this man and his poetry. see this film with an open mind

2-0 out of 5 stars You'll Want to Bathe After Watching This One!
This movie is a portrayal of the "Nuyorican" poet and playwright Miguel Pinero. Pinero wrote the play "Short Eyes" based on life in prison. It's a harsh look at the life Pinero lived, a life enveloped with crime, drugs, and disease. I'm not the one that picked out this movie, so I wasn't that interested in it even before it began. After watching the street life of Pinero I felt dirty!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie although very sad and tragic
Pinero is based on the life of puertorican playwright, actor and poet Miguel Pinero. His life from early childhood was a constant struggle for survival since his father abandoned his mother (played by the great Rita Moreno)when he was a small boy. Pinero turned to a life of crime while still in his early teens and served time in Sing-Sing for arm robbery and stealing cars. While on the inside Pinero turned his anger and frustrations to writing short stories which later became plays such as his most successful and controversial play "SHORT EYES" which was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Play in the late 70's. Pinero also started a theater group in jail and perform for the other inmates plays that he had written. Joseph Papp, the legendary theater producer read Pinero's play "SHORT EYES" and decided to produced it Off Broadway while it became a success despite is limted run.

I have never been fond of Benjamin Bratt as an actor but in this movie he did an excellent job and really transformed himself into the character. This movie is a bit strong and somewhat harsh since it depicts the reality of the character. Miguel Pinero was not only a convict but a drug addict who took heavy doses of cocaine and would inject large quantaties of heroin on his arms. Pinero lived the life of a bum through out his life and even as he reached moderate success as a playwright he still hard a tough time fighting his inner demons. He died in 1988 at the age of 40 of Aids (I believe) after he overdosed on more heroin.

This movie is not for everyone but it is a good movie whose main character lived a very sad and tragic life and just as he lived life on the edge he ended his run on earth the same way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miguel Piñero, 150614
After his father abandons his family, Miguel Piñero starts a journey that will take him through the lowest and highest points imaginable. Miguel was prayed upon by perverted adults in his childhood, became a drug addict, and ended committing a series of crimes and going to prison (prisoner 150614). During his stay in Sing Sing a visit by his mother urging him to make her proud motivates him to start writing a play about life in prison called Short Eyes, which will be his first step towards stardom.

Life after prison did not change much, he was successful as a poet and writer, but his personality made him return to his bad habits. His belief was that a painful and troubling life results in devotion to the truth, and therefore allowed him to write in such an exceptional way.

The movie shows the particular relationship Piñero had with some of his friends, two of which appear as particularly prominent, Miguel Algarin and Tito Goya; the former a professor at Rutgers, the latter a partner in crime and drugs. This also shows the duality that was present in other aspects of his life. There are several other manifestations on this duality throughout the movie, for example Miguel had a "stable" relationship with Sugar, his girlfriend, but he also had amorous relationships with other men.

The style in which the movie is presented corresponds well with the inner turmoil Piñero experienced. There is an interesting use of alternation between black and white and color scenes and the action keeps moving forward and backward in time without any clear array.

The performance given by Benjamin Bratt is extraordinary. I do not like this actor particularly, but in this case I have to acknowledge he fitted the role perfectly. He also performed extremely well in the parts in which it is required from him to recite poems.

This is an amazing movie and I think everyone should see it. Nevertheless, if you are uncomfortable with non-linear sequence in the action, or are not interested in the least in poetry, it would be better for you to skip it. On the contrary for those of you that have watched and enjoyed the show "Def Poetry" in the past, this movie will be memorable. The poem in the last scene will give you goose bumps and leave you breathless! ...

The poem in the last scene will give you goose bumps and leave you breathless! ... Read more
