4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining--just don't think too hard about the details!
I enjoyed this film. But, I must confess that there were some major holes in the plot. The best way to enjoy this film (in my opinion) is to not think too hard, and not expect too much. Then you'll enjoy it just fine. There's plenty to enjoy.

I've always liked Cuba Gooding Jr. ("Snow Dogs") and he is very affable in this film. You can't help but root for his character, even after he does something really, really dumb. The motto "Pride cometh before a fall" certainly applies in this movie, and Gooding's character suffers dearly for it. He should have realized this simple wisdom--don't try to take shortcuts with certain things. They'll only come back to haunt you later. And they do for him.

Even though the credits list Tom Berenger as one of the main stars, he's actually got more of a supporting role. But he does just fine in his part as a grouchy policeman who is on the tail of Gooding Jr. for a crime he didn't commit. Eric Stoltz does well as a sleazy rich guy--those clean cut good looks conceal a really creepy character.

I found this to be an all-around entertaining movie, but it does have plot holes, so don't expect too much. Cuba Gooding Jr. fans will particularly like this movie, since it showcases his talents quite well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Well Done
A MURDER OF CROWS redeems Rowdy Herrington and Cuba Gooding Jr. for every bad film they have ever made, and combined... that's a lot of bad films.

MURDER revolves around a disbarred lawyer who scams his way into a success, but, through a devious plot twist, becomes the main suspect in a string of brilliant homicides. The script by Herrington is absolutely involving. It's detailed, well paced, and very smart. Despite a few goofy or cheesy lines, which are pretty much due to bad acting in certain parts, the script is solid.

The direction is as haunting as it should be in this type of film and Herrington really turns up the suspense. His slow shots or disoriated handhelds are in the right places, and it only adds to the tenseness of the story.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is completely fascinating in this role. He gets into it all the way and makes you believe him, even in the most incredible scenes. Tom Berrenger, however, does not fare as well. Even though he proved in the past that he was a decent actor, he slips a bit, and some of his lines are given like he was reading them off of cue cards. However, he's good enough that it doesn't distract from anything else, and in some scenes, he's excellent. The supporting cast, including Marianne Jean Baptiste and Eric Stoltz, is very good and only adds to the film. Stoltz is smarmy and oozes charisma and Baptiste has a very soothing, sweet, grandmother-type air about her. They are the best they could be.

Overall, A MURDER OF CROWS is a highly overlooked film that should be scene by lovers of suspense. The guessing game that is involved throughout the story doesn't make you feel stupid, but it doesn't give much away either.

4-0 out of 5 stars CUBA AND THE CROWS
What's right with this movie:
*A well paced director, Rowdy Herrington
*A good supporting cast in Marianne Baptiste and Tom Berenger
*An unusual if flawed plot
*Steve Porcaro's wonderful score
What's wrong with this movie:
*Once they establish Gooding as the killer, why doesn't he as a lawyer, ask the big question: where's the physical evidence? Did they bother to check his alibis?
*Cuba Gooding's performance lacked the strength and gutsiness one would expect from this character. He also does some incredibly stupid things, and while he is a good actor, he really seems to do better in more comedic roles.
All considered, though, it's an entertaining and underrated thriller.

1-0 out of 5 stars ...bottom of the trash barrel with this one...
utter garbage. If you want a sex movie this is for you. If you want good acting this movie is not for you. "THE BEST MOVIE EVER"????? ... ...THIS MOVIE IS A RIP-OFF. When I read that review after watching this movie I sat in disbelief...Its like seeing someone hit by a car, and then watching all the witnesses run after the driver to make sure he knows what a swell citizen he was for running over that pedestrian...???!!!

plot was decent enough, but had some stuff that didnt make any sense. I agree with another reviewer that Gooding is much better than this movie shows. He just seems weirded out and uncomfortable in it. BUT, maybe that was part of his character? I guess if you think this a agreat movie you will give the actors the benefit of the doubt. I CANT. I have never scene such a movie that comes off as if the actors are giving screen tests...IT WAS a very uncomfortable movie to sit thru. I DONT BELIEVE ANY OF THE ACTORS IN THIS MOVIE EVEN KNOW HOW TO hold a cigarette. THE CHESS GAME WITH BERENGER/GOODING IS PATHETIC. I was waiting for one of them to wave the smoke away from there eyes. They looked so uncomfortable. Although, Berenger was one of the better actors in the movie. Mark Pellegrino was also pretty good.

The box is also a major culprit in selling this junk. If it wasnt for the mention of key west and new orleans, AND WHAT THE PLOT COULVE BEEN, this movie would hold no interest for me. I considered my money wasted on it. It would have been good if the film company listed why the R rating, just like other companies in the late 90s and early 00s have done. True the ratings are not always accurate, but it probably would have referenced the sex scenes. sex scenes were tossed in without any rhyme or reason. maybe i am helping to sell this flick, but maybe some people care to know in order to avoid. I wasnt expecting a R-rated child's movie, but I didnt expect to be treated like one either. Why amazon thinks "a second chance" is necessary for this lousy flick is beyond me. The voice overs are in fact a "plus" not a "minus", in some instances. ALSO, WHATS WITH THE FRONT COVER PHOTO? IT DOESNT RELATE TO ANYTHING IN THE BOX. OH, BUT IT IS MENTIONED UNDER EACH FACE "ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE". Lets remember it wasnt for "Murder of Crows" shall we.

Experiment if you want...rent/buy it if you want... but at least I tried to warn ya. I cannot conscientiously recommend this movie to anyone. I was going to give it one star, but the plot had such potential, and combined with talented acting could have been so much more, I coughed up another one. On second thought, I think I have been cheated fair and square. so its back to one star. plain & simple. THE UTTER BOTTOM...BOTTOM OF THE SEA WITH THIS ONE.

I guess actors have to eat, but its amazing what they will do for money. I am not any different than they are...what a scary thought that it could happen to me too...I really was left cheated after this flick. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST movie ever made
Although my family is of Cuban origin I was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in England. Many people will know this small town as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright in the world, ever. I also believed this, until I saw this movie, sorry Shakespeare, your time is up, give up your throne. The writer of this movie has got it 'goin' on!'. This movie has more twists than a 'Curly Wurly'(Which FYI is a particularly twisty English chocolate bar), has some of the best acting I have ever seen on screen and the directing is flawless. This movie never came to the cinemas in England and I am currently petitioning the local multiplex to show the movie, even just for one showing, so I and countless others can marvel in its beauty. ... One of those movies that helped usher out the era of action films that had plots that made any sense (and also helped reverse the direction of Patrick Swayze's career arc), Road House concerns a handsome, existential bouncer in a rinky-dink honky-tonk who owns both a degree in philosophy and a Mercedes. And that's perhaps the most believable aspect of the whole movie. Swayze stars as Dalton, "the best bouncer in the business," who runs afoul of Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the meanest SOB round these parts, by taking up with his former girlfriend, Doc (Kelly Lynch)--the only woman in town with an IQ approaching double digits, even if she had unfathomably hooked up with such a lowlife. Swayze had complained about being typecast as beefcake when this was made, but that didn't stop him from revealing as much skin as possible--even guys like him, as revealed in a luridly seedy scene in which one of Wesley's goons tells Dalton that he reminds him of the kind of boyfriend he had in prison (albeit in much saltier terms). It's so insulting to its audience that it's nice to be able to turn the tables and laugh at the filmmakers. --David Kronke ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "RED WEST IS GREAT IN THIS MOVIE!!!"
I couldn't believe my eyes last night when I was watching ALL THE KING'S MEN:THE SECRET LIFE OF ELVIS, about Elvis' so-called Memphis Mafia, when I got so fascinated by these men and their behind-the-scenes stories about the King, and then one of them started to look familiar..."Wait a minute!" I thought, "That red headed man looks like the guy from ROADHOUSE!!!" I remembered hearing about Red West years ago but I didn't know he was an actor and so I just looked him up on the cast list for ROADHOUSE and there he was!

This is an entertaining movie, with a good hero, terrific supporting actors, and Ben Gazzara is just right as the small town mean rich guy! The women are attractive, and the bar scenes are a lot of fun, too. I just wish the story had been written to lead to a sequel, and that Sam Elliot hadn't been killed off, as he and Swayze worked well together.

The photography is excellent, and there are several unusual character actors. And one other thing... RED WEST IS GREAT IN THIS MOVIE!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Movie for Guys Who Like Movies
In the grand tradition of fight now, ask questions later, comes Road House. Patrick Swayze is Dalton. He is the new breed of bar bouncers. Calling himself the cooler, Dalton is small, a martial arts expert, and he has a degree in psychology. This means bad news for the regulars at the Duece, Duece because Dalton has been hired to clean it up. And clean it up he does. But first he had to personally put every piece of bad element he doesn't want out on their rear ends. Everything seems to be going right until Dalton runs head to head with Brad Wesley(Ben Gazzera). Wesley is like the town's dictator, he owns a piece of just about every business in town and he doesn't like Dalton's presence one bit. Lucky for the audience one of them must go and Dalton isn't one to budge easily.

This is a guys movie all the way. Swayze is awesome as Dalton. He is cool, confident, and tough as nails. Gazzera is good as the villian and he sends plenty of thugs over to the Duece, Duece to keep the action coming. Sam Elliot is great in his supporting role as Dalton's mentor, Wade Garrett. And of course there has to be women, and there are, but none hotter than Kelly Lynch, Dalton's love interest. Roadhouse never slows down. It has a great soundtrack and it is well directed. It's just a fun movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars response to "what hasnt been said before"
like everyone says its a guy flick that does not disappoint. however like the other reviewer i also notice little mistakes and the biggest one in this movie is when Dalton is "asked" to attend a meeting with Brad over breakfast......when dalton walks in there is pool table with NO pockets! jeez you'd think the set guys coulda borrowed a real pool table for the shot?

4-0 out of 5 stars A film that delivers just what it promises -- that's rare!
Mike Nelson, one of the brains behind the television comedy 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' wrote in his hysterical book 'Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese' that ' ROAD HOUSE is the single finest American film. Certainly it stinks, but I believe the filmmakers meant it to, and succeeded grandly.'

It's hard to argue with this logic once you've seen 'Road House.' It's trash. It's sleazy. It's often ludicrously stupid. The characters may talk philosophical bilge, but when it comes down to it they solve everything with their fists and shotguns. But that's what the filmmakers wanted, and that's what they deliver. (What do you expect from a director named 'Rowdy'?) Looking for a good time along those lines? Just want some butt-kickin', naked girls, barroom brawls, monster trucks, things going BOOM, Patrick Swayze mouthing silly lines and wrestling mean sweaty ugly guys while near naked, yet still getting up for his tai-chi in the morning? Well, 'Road House' has got all that and more, and you're going to have a good time. There's trashy purity about this film that's rather refreshing.

The plot? Yeah, it's got one ' just enough of one. Patrick Swayze (in what is really the defining role of his career) plays Dalton, a famous bouncer with a degree in philosophy, an attitude like a motivational speaker, kick-boxing moves, and who practices tai-chi. Dalton is one of the damned silliest characters in action film history, but you gotta love his outrageousness. Dalton comes to the town of Jasper outside of Kansas City to help clean up the Double Deuce bar, possibly the meanest bar in cinema history outside of a Western. Dalton whips the place into shape, romances local doctor Kelly Lynch, but then has to face the evil town boss, Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara!), who won't release his financial grip of fear he has on the town. (I believe this was the plot of every A-Team episode, wasn't it?). Every few minutes, people pound each other with their fists, the band plays a loud blues tune, somebody takes off their clothes, and then they knock back some 'suds. Oh, and Sam Elliott's in the film too!

The action scenes are pretty darned wacky, along the lines of 'gee, imagine if he had hit him!' and plenty of strange martial arts moves, but they're loads of fun. Get a group together with the right mindset, and this is once great party flick.

The DVD has no extras except for a trailer. Imagine what this would have been like with some audio commentary from director Rowdy? I would love to hear his philosophical approach to this film. I'm sure he didn't have one, but wouldn't it have added to enjoyment of what Mike Nelson calls 'the finest American film' to hear him just make one up?

At this point, I'm sure you know if 'Road House' is a flick for you. And if you know, go for it. It doesn't let you down. If it delivers the goods it promises, it gets four stars in my book. Even if it really isn't that good. But I think that's the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's right. FIVE stars.
Road House is the sort of movie that critics reflexively dismiss as being a cheesy, corny, poorly written, moronic action movie, but I see it differently. It is kind of cheesy, with Dalton being a famous traveling bouncer with only one name, but it shines in every other area. The dialogue is good enough, the story is involving, Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliot are truly great actors, there's a nice amount of gratuitous female nudity, and the fight scenes are some of the best I've ever seen. This is the ultimate guy movie. And as far as Joel Silver's work goes, I think Road House is better than the Matrix sequels. I've seen it at least 10 times and it hasn't gotten old. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely overlooked 80's crime/thriller.
Someone is killing prostitutes in a very Jack The Ripper-esque fashion on the 100 year anniversaries of The Ripper's original murders. A med student (Spader) gets caught up in the last murder and winds up meeting a tragic fate. Now his twin brother (also played by Spader) is out to find the man responsible for his death. In turn, he gets caught up in the middle of the murder case in the process. Oh, and he has to clear his own name because he is a suspect in the before mentioned case AND also a suspect in his own brothers murder.

Jack's Back is an odd movie and kind of deceiving. You see, no one in their right mind is gonna market a movie this complicated. So what the box tells you is that Jack's Back is about a murderer mimicking the Jack The Ripper slayings of a century ago. Well, that's only half the movie. Really just 1/3. Jack's Back is a murder mystery turned revenge noir turned suspense thriller that manages to avoid drowning itself in murky plot, pointless subplot, or endless dialogue in an attempt to competently tell the story and wrap everything up in the end. From the title and basic premise of the film one may think it's just your basic slasher type/murder mystery exploitation stuff that was being recycled and rehashed endlessly during the period when this movie was released. If so, you're wrong...

Writer/director Rowdy Herrington gives us a strong, well developed script with great characters and memorable situations. His ability to shift from a murder mystery to revenge flick to thriller deserves major acclaim. Props to Herrington for creating such likeable and complex characters in the process. From a directing standpoint, Herrington gives the movie a moody and uneasy atmosphere, blanketing it in thick fog and laying on a soft, soporific score to boot. Love that song "Red Harvest," too.

James Spader delivers a layered and very strong duel performance that engaged me and kept my eyes glued to the screen. Cynthia Gibb gives a strong performance as well. I dug how the script didn't go into familiar romantic territory even though Spader and Gibb have great chemistry together, the story didn't need it.

It was great to watch a movie with such a dense storyline that never forget what it was supposed to do - entertain. I was intrigued and fascinated with the story, performances, and Herrington's ability to construct such a multi-layered plot and still find a way to pull it all together. Jack's Back isn't conventional in the least, it marches to its own drum, has class, and is well written, acted and directed. Check it out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Twice The Spader...Twice The Suspense!
This could've simply been one of those formulaic pieces of Eighties fluff spawned by the likes of THE LOST BOYS, where you have the ADD-style MTV editing, lots of slick cinematography and a cool-if-creepy soundtrack, anchored by a good theme song, (which "Red Harvest Comes" really is.) What makes JACK different from all the rest is that it's anchored by a really good performance from...JAMES SPADER???

Until "sex, lies and videotape," I had narrow-mindedly ghettoized Spader into a good looking, priggy jerk, identifying him mostly with the kind of roles he usually played in the John Hughes movies...the snotty, arrogant, broomstick-up-the-bum rich kid who got his kicks by crushing the identities of poorer, less popular mortals. His deeply affecting performance in "sex" completely caught me off guard, but once I saw JACK, I began to understand that as an actor, to say that Spader has been underestimated is hardly even describing the situation.

Playing twins with every bit as much skill as Jeremy Irons did in the overlooked DEAD RINGERS, Spader plays "naughty" and "nice" sides of the same coin. The "nice" side is apparently a saintly doctor who treats the rich and well-to-do by day, of course, but after work devotes his time and energies to a free clinic in Echo Park, where he seems to be at constant loggerheads with the clinic's unctious director, and catching the eye of a more-than-slightly-interested volunteer, (FAME'S Cynthia Gibb.)

Good Twin Spader and Gibb become involved in a murder mystery involving dead hookers. Well, not just dead, but butchered, and not just by any sick puppy. THIS sick puppy is a Jack The Ripper fan, (hence the clumsy title), who is into recreating the quintessential serial murderer's ghastly deeds, one hundred years to the day that the first one is committed.

Through tragic circumstances, Gibb is suddenly and shockingly introduced to "Bad" Twin Spader, and the story continues as they try to figure out who the slasher really is, not really thinking about how much danger is involved, trying to catch someone who is already a step and a half ahead of them...

Destined later to direct a movie long considered a sign of the Apocalypse, ROADHOUSE starring Patrick Swayze, Rowdy Herrington brings a better sense of story and style to JACK'S BACK. But with Spader gift-wrapping a performance that this script probably didn't deserve, it's hard NOT to come up with something that is watchable at the very least.

It's just too bad that the company which produced JACK, was going bankrupt at the time, and dumping its product into the direct-to-video bins as fast as Blockbuster workers could shrink-wrap it. (That includes a movie far more disturbing and original from the same producers: Donald Cammell's WHITE OF THE EYE.)

Another good, solid "programmer" you may catch on HBO or Encore, if you can't find the VHS version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where can I get a copy of this films song "Red Harvest"???
Great 80's alternative song and but amazingly, not available anywhere! Is little known about singer Paul Saax or if he has this on an album somewhere? Reminds me of The Fixx.

I guess I'll have to wait to get the DVD and perform a rudimentary dub of the song.

Any help out there will be much appreciated, though :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Please read this before buying this movie!
Ok people, I'm not the person to write on-line reviews, but the rave reviews that this movie received forced me to write this as a public service to the human race. This movie is NOT good--it doesn't even come close to being a 5-star cinematic experience. Now the movie isn't awful--the acting is solid, so you have to give it some credit. But the people who gave this movie 5 stars are just wrong. There is no point of contention here. Compare this film with any "classic" movie and it doesn't compare. Are you telling me that "Jack's Back" is on par with "Psycho"?!?

Bottom Line: This movie is a bad movie that is lifted up by some talented performers. Don't believe me? Watch it for yourself and be disappointed like I was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite the tacky title a solid little twisted terror tale
One hundred years after Jack the Ripper terrorized the Whitechapel district of London, a copycat is plaguing Echo Park in Los Angeles by recreating each of the murders one hundred years to day (the film sticks to the canonical victims of the Ripper, so Ripperologists are kindly asked to keep their debate about who was or was not a Ripper victim to themselves for the duration of this film. Thank you). James Spader plays twins, John and Rick Westford: one is good and one is bad, one is a med student and the other is trying to solve the murders, but both have enough medical knowledge to know how to wield a scalpel ala the Ripper, which greatly concerns Chris Moscari (Cynthia Gibbs), the young girl who is involved with the pair. Yes, the fact that there are twins here becomes important to the machinations of the plot, but not in the way you expect, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Gibb, who played Gypsy Rose Lee in the Bette Midler "Gypsy," is more than adequate to her part but this movie belongs to Spader and writer-director Rowdy Herrington. Spader gives both of his parts nuances that matter not only to the performance but to the twists and turns of the plot. Herrington pays more attention to the mystery part of the film than he does to the murders, and there is a valid reading of this film as playing off of the horror film genre stereotypes as "Scream" was lauded for doing. The central characters have considerably more depth than you would expect to find in what is ostensibly a splatter flick, and the plot is contrived with a degree of calculation that demands respect. "Jack's Back," despite the tacky title, is not your ordinary recycled slasher flick. It is not surprising based on this debut that Herrington went on to direct the film "Gladiator" (no, not that one, the other one about the world of illegal underground boxing). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and witty thrill ride!
This movie was fun to watch and very witty. James Spader delivers a terrific performance as usual and Leslie Stefanson also does a fantastic job. The remainder of the cast is funny and slightly strange, which also makes this movie enjoyable.

The film is basically about a bank robbery that is thought to have been committed by Det. John Parker (Spader). As the film progresses, however, the audience is led to wonder whether he was really the one who did the crime. Aided by his love interest, Natalie Wright (Stefanson), he seeks to prove that he is not the thief. After some fun twists and turns in the plot, there is eventually a happy and satisfying conclusion to this fast-paced story.

If you are looking for a film that is fun, witty and thrilling, then I highly recommend that you check out "The Stickup." This film is definitely a must for fans of James Spader, especially if you enjoyed his performance in "2 Days in the Valley." Give this movie a try and I guarantee that you will have a fun time with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little Thriller
I stumbled upon this little film while browsing the shelves of the local video store. I love James Spader so I picked it up.

This was a surprisingly tight film, easily better than half the films that I have to pay $8 bucks to see in the nearest cineplex.

James Spader, as always, brings up the level of anything he's in.

Take a chance on a small, "Memento" like thriller. You'll be happy that you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars the stickup
I thought it was very entertaining with plenty of plot twists. James Spader is always very good and Leslie Stephanson was a good match for his character with great chemistry. I hope we see a lot more of her in movies to come. Although, the movie was predictable at times, it kept me entertained throughout and was definitely worth seeing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly fine 'Indie-type' movie
THE STICKUP is another of those little films that is destined to perform better once released to the general audience who frequent the video outlets than in the craze-oriented movie house venues. This is a quiet little who-dunnit that keeps you on the edge of your favorite chair to the end. The story seems like a straight forward bank holdup by a good cop gone bad, until gradually every detail of the case in question is expertly exposed and each of the players is spotlighted to be revealed as to who they really are. James Spader continues to grow as an actor and does particularly well in holding our attention thru the many avenues of flashback in this story. The remainder of the cast is excellent (especially the fine and beautiful Lesley Stefanson). Relax, folks, this is a story to take you away from your daily routine and, as such, begs you to indulge your need to spin off on cinematic diversions. Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Plot Twist/Fine Acting but oh soo low budget
Kind of in the genre of movies like Memento and Mulholland Drive that deliberately set out to mislead the mind but not quite as complicated so that you feel you should have been able to have caught on a little sooner if you had only paid more attention - see if you can if you do watch. The witty dialogue between James Spader and female lead Leslie Stefanson is full of sparks that makes this a nice gem. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is entirely due to the low budget cinematography, otherwise its miles better than the [stuff] that usually gets top billing these days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Striking Distance Hits the Bullseye!
Bruce Willis plays Thomas Hardy son of demised Pittsburgh Cop who's death is in question. Hardy who is also a cop get's put on River patrol around the Three Rivers where bodies keep popping up. Sarah Jessica Parker plays partner and eventual love interest and becomes endagered when the serial killer starts aiming for Hardy. This is arguably the most underated action thriller of it's kind due to it's unique story and it's unpredictable ending. Take bets early on who the killer is. This movie is well shot and well edited. Willis' best action movie is still Diehard but this isn't far off. Native Pittsburghers will love recognizing the on location action sequences. Hardy keeps it together through police dept. dissention but is eventually looked at to save the day & night. See this one, it's better than it's revues!

5-0 out of 5 stars typical cop flick with atypical setting
This movie follows one of the typical cop movie plots -- discgraced cop being tormented, The setting is not the typical Chicago or Los Angeles, rather it follows Bruce Willis as a river cop in Pittsburgh. The plot is not very deep and if you think about things too hard you may be unhappy. The movie does provide plenty of good exciting entertainment with plenty of cool Bruce Willis "looks". Sarah Jessica Parker does a great job playing his unwanted partner (another standard cop movie cliche) too.

I thought the ending dragged on a bit long, but overall it was very enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Based On Real-Life
It is no wonder that this movie takes place in Pittsburgh,Pa.where corrupt cops abound.Bruce Willis is excellent in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars HUH?
I was really surprised by the number of negative reviews of this movie. Granted, STRIKING DISTANCE, is not one of Bruce's best films, but I found it to be solidly entertaining, cliches and all. And I think it had some very good twists that I didn't see coming. I found the whole cast, (even (...)Sarah Jessica Parker) to be commendable in their roles. Special kudos to Robert Pastorelli, Dennis Farina and Tom Sizemore. I wanted to be entertained and STRIKING DISTANCE certainly filled the bill for me!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Strike Out
Striking Distance may boast the likes of mega star Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker, pre her Sex In The City fame, in its cast. Not to mention some fine character actors, lending some solid support to the proceedings. Still, thanks to a screenplay, riddled with cliches, the film fails to add anything new to the thriller genre

Tom Hardy (Bruce Willis) is a maverick cop who's not afraid to rock the boat in pursuit of a sadistic serial killer. Demoted to river patrol after suggesting the killer may be a fellow police officer, he initiates an unauthorized investigation. His new partner, Jo (Sarah Jessica Parker) climbs aboard with a surprise of her own, as the conspiracy closes in around them.

Director Rowdy Herrington, who is also credited as co-writer of the film's script with Martin Kaplan, puts together a film that feels all too familiar. The "twists" of the movie are fairly easy to spot, and if it wasn't for the work of Willis, who does a solid job--the movie would be almost forgettable. What should play out like a "page turning pulp mystery", instead, the story connects most of the dots for the viewer. What a shame.

Given my thoughts on the film, I was not at all suprised by the lack of extras, on the DVD. All that's there is the movie's theatrical trailer Those that end up watching Striking Distance can choose to do so, in either the full-screen, or widescreen formats.

What a disappointment. The DVD only garners a two star rating, not my usual feeling about a Bruce Willis flick... ...

I've seen it at least 10 times and it hasn't gotten old. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gladiator
This is one of the rare finds in the world of cinema, a true unknown classic, set in the modern world of boxing. Directed by Rowdy Herrington, and the best thing by far that he ever did. The movie stars James Marshall, Robert Loggia, Cuba Gooding Jr and Brian Dennehy, who all put in best performances. This movie is relatitively unknown and did fair at the box office, never the less has a great story, good characterizations, solid performances by all, and above all, excellant direction. Absolutley one of the films of the that year, and a film not to miss. A true classic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good fun boxing movie..
After seeing some of the reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy this movie as well. I was very pleased and enjoyed the movie. It's nothing serious like the first two Rocky movies, but light hearted action fun. It pretty quick paced so you don't get bored. I'd compare it more to being similar to Rocky IV in terms of pacing. The story is simple enough about a young, white boxer who, through a turn of bad luck, finds himself in the poorhouse and has to box to settle his dad's gambling debts. The acting is believable unlike the recent Star Wars Attack of the Clones fiasco. Cuba Gooding and James Marshall both put in great performances. The boxing, although a little over the top sometimes,is still great to see although I'd like to have seen longer training sequences. The quality of the dvd picture is great as well. What they don't mention on Amazon's techincal data is that the dvd has both a widescreen and standard full format presentation on either side of the disc so you can watch the movie whatever way you want. I'd definitely recommend this disc for the boxing movie enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great film
Great great film. Direction, performances, writing, casting all first rate and better than any other modern boxing movie. Don't miss this film, it is great entertainment for everyone- family, adults, and kids. You will not go wrong with this movie.
Should have won for Best Picture of the Year.

5-0 out of 5 stars great boxing film!!!!
The best boxing film out today by far, outshines the Rocky films, due to if you have seen the first rocky, you have seen them all. 'Gladiator' is a refreshing story line and has some great performances.
GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Movie
This wasn't just a boxing movie, it was a full scale drama that certainly puts Rocky to shame. Actor James Marshall did a super job in the lead role of Tommy Reilly; and the rest of the cast was likewise excellent, Jon Seda in particular. ...

This movie never came to the cinemas in England and I am currently petitioning the local multiplex to show the movie, even just for one showing, so I and countless others can marvel in its beauty. ...

The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is entirely due to the low budget cinematography, otherwise its miles better than the [stuff] that usually gets top billing these days. ... Read more
