I've always liked Cuba Gooding Jr. ("Snow Dogs") and he is very affable in this film. You can't help but root for his character, even after he does something really, really dumb. The motto "Pride cometh before a fall" certainly applies in this movie, and Gooding's character suffers dearly for it. He should have realized this simple wisdom--don't try to take shortcuts with certain things. They'll only come back to haunt you later. And they do for him. Even though the credits list Tom Berenger as one of the main stars, he's actually got more of a supporting role. But he does just fine in his part as a grouchy policeman who is on the tail of Gooding Jr. for a crime he didn't commit. Eric Stoltz does well as a sleazy rich guy--those clean cut good looks conceal a really creepy character. I found this to be an all-around entertaining movie, but it does have plot holes, so don't expect too much. Cuba Gooding Jr. fans will particularly like this movie, since it showcases his talents quite well.
MURDER revolves around a disbarred lawyer who scams his way into a success, but, through a devious plot twist, becomes the main suspect in a string of brilliant homicides. The script by Herrington is absolutely involving. It's detailed, well paced, and very smart. Despite a few goofy or cheesy lines, which are pretty much due to bad acting in certain parts, the script is solid. The direction is as haunting as it should be in this type of film and Herrington really turns up the suspense. His slow shots or disoriated handhelds are in the right places, and it only adds to the tenseness of the story. Cuba Gooding Jr. is completely fascinating in this role. He gets into it all the way and makes you believe him, even in the most incredible scenes. Tom Berrenger, however, does not fare as well. Even though he proved in the past that he was a decent actor, he slips a bit, and some of his lines are given like he was reading them off of cue cards. However, he's good enough that it doesn't distract from anything else, and in some scenes, he's excellent. The supporting cast, including Marianne Jean Baptiste and Eric Stoltz, is very good and only adds to the film. Stoltz is smarmy and oozes charisma and Baptiste has a very soothing, sweet, grandmother-type air about her. They are the best they could be. Overall, A MURDER OF CROWS is a highly overlooked film that should be scene by lovers of suspense. The guessing game that is involved throughout the story doesn't make you feel stupid, but it doesn't give much away either.
plot was decent enough, but had some stuff that didnt make any sense. I agree with another reviewer that Gooding is much better than this movie shows. He just seems weirded out and uncomfortable in it. BUT, maybe that was part of his character? I guess if you think this a agreat movie you will give the actors the benefit of the doubt. I CANT. I have never scene such a movie that comes off as if the actors are giving screen tests...IT WAS a very uncomfortable movie to sit thru. I DONT BELIEVE ANY OF THE ACTORS IN THIS MOVIE EVEN KNOW HOW TO hold a cigarette. THE CHESS GAME WITH BERENGER/GOODING IS PATHETIC. I was waiting for one of them to wave the smoke away from there eyes. They looked so uncomfortable. Although, Berenger was one of the better actors in the movie. Mark Pellegrino was also pretty good. The box is also a major culprit in selling this junk. If it wasnt for the mention of key west and new orleans, AND WHAT THE PLOT COULVE BEEN, this movie would hold no interest for me. I considered my money wasted on it. It would have been good if the film company listed why the R rating, just like other companies in the late 90s and early 00s have done. True the ratings are not always accurate, but it probably would have referenced the sex scenes. sex scenes were tossed in without any rhyme or reason. maybe i am helping to sell this flick, but maybe some people care to know in order to avoid. I wasnt expecting a R-rated child's movie, but I didnt expect to be treated like one either. Why amazon thinks "a second chance" is necessary for this lousy flick is beyond me. The voice overs are in fact a "plus" not a "minus", in some instances. ALSO, WHATS WITH THE FRONT COVER PHOTO? IT DOESNT RELATE TO ANYTHING IN THE BOX. OH, BUT IT IS MENTIONED UNDER EACH FACE "ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE". Lets remember it wasnt for "Murder of Crows" shall we. I guess actors have to eat, but its amazing what they will do for money. I am not any different than they are...what a scary thought that it could happen to me too...I really was left cheated after this flick. ...

This is an entertaining movie, with a good hero, terrific supporting actors, and Ben Gazzara is just right as the small town mean rich guy! The women are attractive, and the bar scenes are a lot of fun, too. I just wish the story had been written to lead to a sequel, and that Sam Elliot hadn't been killed off, as he and Swayze worked well together. The photography is excellent, and there are several unusual character actors. And one other thing... RED WEST IS GREAT IN THIS MOVIE!!!
This is a guys movie all the way. Swayze is awesome as Dalton. He is cool, confident, and tough as nails. Gazzera is good as the villian and he sends plenty of thugs over to the Duece, Duece to keep the action coming. Sam Elliot is great in his supporting role as Dalton's mentor, Wade Garrett. And of course there has to be women, and there are, but none hotter than Kelly Lynch, Dalton's love interest. Roadhouse never slows down. It has a great soundtrack and it is well directed. It's just a fun movie.
It's hard to argue with this logic once you've seen 'Road House.' It's trash. It's sleazy. It's often ludicrously stupid. The characters may talk philosophical bilge, but when it comes down to it they solve everything with their fists and shotguns. But that's what the filmmakers wanted, and that's what they deliver. (What do you expect from a director named 'Rowdy'?) Looking for a good time along those lines? Just want some butt-kickin', naked girls, barroom brawls, monster trucks, things going BOOM, Patrick Swayze mouthing silly lines and wrestling mean sweaty ugly guys while near naked, yet still getting up for his tai-chi in the morning? Well, 'Road House' has got all that and more, and you're going to have a good time. There's trashy purity about this film that's rather refreshing. The plot? Yeah, it's got one ' just enough of one. Patrick Swayze (in what is really the defining role of his career) plays Dalton, a famous bouncer with a degree in philosophy, an attitude like a motivational speaker, kick-boxing moves, and who practices tai-chi. Dalton is one of the damned silliest characters in action film history, but you gotta love his outrageousness. Dalton comes to the town of Jasper outside of Kansas City to help clean up the Double Deuce bar, possibly the meanest bar in cinema history outside of a Western. Dalton whips the place into shape, romances local doctor Kelly Lynch, but then has to face the evil town boss, Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara!), who won't release his financial grip of fear he has on the town. (I believe this was the plot of every A-Team episode, wasn't it?). Every few minutes, people pound each other with their fists, the band plays a loud blues tune, somebody takes off their clothes, and then they knock back some 'suds. Oh, and Sam Elliott's in the film too! The action scenes are pretty darned wacky, along the lines of 'gee, imagine if he had hit him!' and plenty of strange martial arts moves, but they're loads of fun. Get a group together with the right mindset, and this is once great party flick. The DVD has no extras except for a trailer. Imagine what this would have been like with some audio commentary from director Rowdy? I would love to hear his philosophical approach to this film. I'm sure he didn't have one, but wouldn't it have added to enjoyment of what Mike Nelson calls 'the finest American film' to hear him just make one up? At this point, I'm sure you know if 'Road House' is a flick for you. And if you know, go for it. It doesn't let you down. If it delivers the goods it promises, it gets four stars in my book. Even if it really isn't that good. But I think that's the point.

Jack's Back is an odd movie and kind of deceiving. You see, no one in their right mind is gonna market a movie this complicated. So what the box tells you is that Jack's Back is about a murderer mimicking the Jack The Ripper slayings of a century ago. Well, that's only half the movie. Really just 1/3. Jack's Back is a murder mystery turned revenge noir turned suspense thriller that manages to avoid drowning itself in murky plot, pointless subplot, or endless dialogue in an attempt to competently tell the story and wrap everything up in the end. From the title and basic premise of the film one may think it's just your basic slasher type/murder mystery exploitation stuff that was being recycled and rehashed endlessly during the period when this movie was released. If so, you're wrong... Writer/director Rowdy Herrington gives us a strong, well developed script with great characters and memorable situations. His ability to shift from a murder mystery to revenge flick to thriller deserves major acclaim. Props to Herrington for creating such likeable and complex characters in the process. From a directing standpoint, Herrington gives the movie a moody and uneasy atmosphere, blanketing it in thick fog and laying on a soft, soporific score to boot. Love that song "Red Harvest," too. James Spader delivers a layered and very strong duel performance that engaged me and kept my eyes glued to the screen. Cynthia Gibb gives a strong performance as well. I dug how the script didn't go into familiar romantic territory even though Spader and Gibb have great chemistry together, the story didn't need it. It was great to watch a movie with such a dense storyline that never forget what it was supposed to do - entertain. I was intrigued and fascinated with the story, performances, and Herrington's ability to construct such a multi-layered plot and still find a way to pull it all together. Jack's Back isn't conventional in the least, it marches to its own drum, has class, and is well written, acted and directed. Check it out!
Until "sex, lies and videotape," I had narrow-mindedly ghettoized Spader into a good looking, priggy jerk, identifying him mostly with the kind of roles he usually played in the John Hughes movies...the snotty, arrogant, broomstick-up-the-bum rich kid who got his kicks by crushing the identities of poorer, less popular mortals. His deeply affecting performance in "sex" completely caught me off guard, but once I saw JACK, I began to understand that as an actor, to say that Spader has been underestimated is hardly even describing the situation. Playing twins with every bit as much skill as Jeremy Irons did in the overlooked DEAD RINGERS, Spader plays "naughty" and "nice" sides of the same coin. The "nice" side is apparently a saintly doctor who treats the rich and well-to-do by day, of course, but after work devotes his time and energies to a free clinic in Echo Park, where he seems to be at constant loggerheads with the clinic's unctious director, and catching the eye of a more-than-slightly-interested volunteer, (FAME'S Cynthia Gibb.) Good Twin Spader and Gibb become involved in a murder mystery involving dead hookers. Well, not just dead, but butchered, and not just by any sick puppy. THIS sick puppy is a Jack The Ripper fan, (hence the clumsy title), who is into recreating the quintessential serial murderer's ghastly deeds, one hundred years to the day that the first one is committed. Through tragic circumstances, Gibb is suddenly and shockingly introduced to "Bad" Twin Spader, and the story continues as they try to figure out who the slasher really is, not really thinking about how much danger is involved, trying to catch someone who is already a step and a half ahead of them... Destined later to direct a movie long considered a sign of the Apocalypse, ROADHOUSE starring Patrick Swayze, Rowdy Herrington brings a better sense of story and style to JACK'S BACK. But with Spader gift-wrapping a performance that this script probably didn't deserve, it's hard NOT to come up with something that is watchable at the very least. It's just too bad that the company which produced JACK, was going bankrupt at the time, and dumping its product into the direct-to-video bins as fast as Blockbuster workers could shrink-wrap it. (That includes a movie far more disturbing and original from the same producers: Donald Cammell's WHITE OF THE EYE.) Another good, solid "programmer" you may catch on HBO or Encore, if you can't find the VHS version.
I guess I'll have to wait to get the DVD and perform a rudimentary dub of the song. Any help out there will be much appreciated, though :)
Bottom Line: This movie is a bad movie that is lifted up by some talented performers. Don't believe me? Watch it for yourself and be disappointed like I was.
Gibb, who played Gypsy Rose Lee in the Bette Midler "Gypsy," is more than adequate to her part but this movie belongs to Spader and writer-director Rowdy Herrington. Spader gives both of his parts nuances that matter not only to the performance but to the twists and turns of the plot. Herrington pays more attention to the mystery part of the film than he does to the murders, and there is a valid reading of this film as playing off of the horror film genre stereotypes as "Scream" was lauded for doing. The central characters have considerably more depth than you would expect to find in what is ostensibly a splatter flick, and the plot is contrived with a degree of calculation that demands respect. "Jack's Back," despite the tacky title, is not your ordinary recycled slasher flick. It is not surprising based on this debut that Herrington went on to direct the film "Gladiator" (no, not that one, the other one about the world of illegal underground boxing). ... Read more

The film is basically about a bank robbery that is thought to have been committed by Det. John Parker (Spader). As the film progresses, however, the audience is led to wonder whether he was really the one who did the crime. Aided by his love interest, Natalie Wright (Stefanson), he seeks to prove that he is not the thief. After some fun twists and turns in the plot, there is eventually a happy and satisfying conclusion to this fast-paced story. If you are looking for a film that is fun, witty and thrilling, then I highly recommend that you check out "The Stickup." This film is definitely a must for fans of James Spader, especially if you enjoyed his performance in "2 Days in the Valley." Give this movie a try and I guarantee that you will have a fun time with it!
This was a surprisingly tight film, easily better than half the films that I have to pay $8 bucks to see in the nearest cineplex. James Spader, as always, brings up the level of anything he's in. Take a chance on a small, "Memento" like thriller. You'll be happy that you did.

I thought the ending dragged on a bit long, but overall it was very enjoyable.
Tom Hardy (Bruce Willis) is a maverick cop who's not afraid to rock the boat in pursuit of a sadistic serial killer. Demoted to river patrol after suggesting the killer may be a fellow police officer, he initiates an unauthorized investigation. His new partner, Jo (Sarah Jessica Parker) climbs aboard with a surprise of her own, as the conspiracy closes in around them. Director Rowdy Herrington, who is also credited as co-writer of the film's script with Martin Kaplan, puts together a film that feels all too familiar. The "twists" of the movie are fairly easy to spot, and if it wasn't for the work of Willis, who does a solid job--the movie would be almost forgettable. What should play out like a "page turning pulp mystery", instead, the story connects most of the dots for the viewer. What a shame. Given my thoughts on the film, I was not at all suprised by the lack of extras, on the DVD. All that's there is the movie's theatrical trailer Those that end up watching Striking Distance can choose to do so, in either the full-screen, or widescreen formats. What a disappointment. The DVD only garners a two star rating, not my usual feeling about a Bruce Willis flick... ... Read more
