4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing adaptation - shoddy tape.
The BBC adaptation is fantastic, with beautiful performances, production quality, and an unerring faithfulness to the book in spirit, word, and deed. If only the tape were as good. Turner Video's done the shoddy trick of putting this three-hour production on a single tape by "recording" it in EP/SLP. As a result, the picture quality, while watchable, leaves a lot to be desired, and the durability of the tape is questionable. I've owned a copy for only a few years, and it's already got rainbowing deterioration.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best childrens movie

5-0 out of 5 stars the Borrowers
My name is hannah enos and will tell you about the borrowers. The borrowers is a wonderful family movie that i am sure children and adults alike will like. one of my faviorite sayings on the borrowers is: " human beans are for borrowers, like bread is for butter". the borrowers have great caractores as well as actors and actress. some of them are arrietty(rebbecca callard), homily (penelope wilton), pod (ian holm) spiller, and george.in the first movie the borrowers live under the grandfather clock,(that is why they are called the "clocks")until arrietty befriends a "human bean", then the clock famliy must flee for safety into the world where there are awful things like rats, weasles and crows, plus there are thousands of bugs which homily smiply hates. but then they meet spiller and it may seem all there troubles are over but wait, are they? the only way to is to whatch the "borrowers".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Adaptation
The Borrowers is a wonderful adaptation of the first two books in Mary Norton's tales of small people who live in the houses of (and borrow from) "human beans". The films are beautifully made with some fine actors (Ian Holm, Sian Phillips) and do a great job of capturing the secretive lives of the Borrowers and of the Edwardian landscapes in which the books are set. The musical accompaniment is also wonderfully atmospheric The only bad thing about this film is the wholly unnecessary and boring interruptions by Richard Lewis, who is never entertaining and totally unsuitable as a narrator/introducer for such a fine series. Buy the videos and fast forward through the Lewis parts!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Version of Mary Norton's Classic!
This mini-series distributed by the BBC,is a charmingly beautiful portrait of what author Mary Norton was trying to achieve in her books depicting the lives of the Clock family (Pod,Homily and Arrietty). The story also features the Clock's friend Spiller, the Harpsichord family,'Human-Bean' friend George, and the evil foils,Mrs Driver and Mildeye.

Arrietty is played to perfection by the highly talented Rebecca Callard. She brings a genuine warmth to her characterisation, one that stays faithful to the story.

Homily is wonderfully played by legendary actress Penelope Wilton. Her portrayal plays out Homily's various phobias and spats with her daughter Arrietty, and she gives a splendidly comedic performance.

Mrs Driver is played by wonderful English actress Sian Phillips. She plays her Driver with a wit and obviously relishes the chance to play the wickedly diabolical character. A truly delightful performance.

The story was followed by a second series, called 'The Borrowers-Series II' (Australia and Europe only) and called 'The Return of the Borrowers' in all other areas.

The second installment 'staples together' the remainder of the books, and tells of the Clock's journey to the model village of Little Fordham. There they encounter the wicked humans Sidney and Mabel, who kidnap them and attempt to use them in their own model village of Ballyhoggin. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch it! It's great!
Wonderful sequel to The Borrowers. It's true that it doesn't stick faithfully to Mary Norton's books, but it's still close enough to make the movie interesting and delightful to watch. The actors are all fabulous especially Rebecca Callard as Arrietty and Daniel Newman as Spiller (wonder what they are doing now and what else they've done?). Highly recommended for both adults and kids; you will not be bored. The only problem is the quality of the tape really really sucks - which is really too bad. I truly hope they will come out with a DVD version soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars return
I must say that the Return of the Borrowers was not as charming and entertaining as the original one. Overall it was still worth watching. The main thing that I was upset by is the script didn't stick closely enough to the original books it was suppose to be based on. I know it can be pretty hard trying to cram 2 or 3 books into one movie but I think with a little more imagination it could have been done better.

4-0 out of 5 stars the borrowers sequel
the second borrrowers is a fantastic movie not quite as good as the first one but still good.the same great actors and actress starbut there are some new stars.if you watched the first one you have to watch the second one it is so great!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Borrowers Are Back for More Fun and Excitement!
All seems well when the Clock family reunite with their relatives, the Hendrearys, and nestle down in their new residence beneath the cottage of two near-sighted sisters. But their adventures in outwitting greedy humans seeking to capture and put them on display is far from over. Besides the "human beans" this time they also have to be careful of the two ill-natured Hendreary boys who try repeatedly to show Pod up at borrowing and teach him a lesson about who's in charge.

When the two women upstairs must leave, the house is deserted and all the utilities turned off, leaving no anemities for either the Clocks or the Hendrearys. The Hendreary's refuse to leave their home, but Pod, Homily, and Arrietty realize they must move on. Their exit is made all the speedier by the mischevious doings of the Hendreary boys who unplug the upstairs bathtub, their temporary water resevior, and send the Clocks washing down the pipes!

Homily has made a delightful transition from the once fragile and "house-proud" homemaker to a very capable and strong pioneer. This is Pod's turn to show what a true Borrower is made of as he shames the Hendreary boys for putting pride before the wellfare of others. Arrietty is still precociously bossy in her attempts to both tame and model herself after the family's adventurous and free-spirited friend, Spiller.

George, the kind "human bean" again comes to the aid of his small friends, although he's quite typically grown up and distracted since his time away at school. Fortunately for the Clocks, he is able to focus long enough to abscond with a flatware tray they use as a boat to sail down the river toward Little Fordham.

In Little Fordham they find a model village, seemingly ideal for inhabitants such as the Clocks. However, Miss Driver gets wind of their whereabouts, and she and two greedy enterprisers, Mabel and Sidney, who have a model village of their own, capture the Clocks and lock them in an attic. Of course, if Mildeye and his rat poison were unsuccessful, you can rest assured that the Clocks find a creative and charming means of escape!

The Clocks return to Little Fordham, but living around so many visitors is frightening, and living in a proper house is not so important or as appealing as the family once thought. Together with Spiller, they venture out in search of a home with more privacy, and a lifestyle of more adventure and appreciation for the things that truly matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sequel to The Borrowers
If you enjoyed the BBC versions of the Borrowers (two tapes with a total of 190 minutes run time) hosted by Richard Lewis, you need to finish up with the Return of the Borrowers.

The Clock family is forced to venture out into the real world, spending time with distant relatives (who think they are quite special since they live in a posh household, with proper rules and fine china).

Arrietty much prefers the adventures of living a less than proper life - in addition to her human bean friend Peter, she's met a young Borrower who lives an outdoorman's life.

While the Clock family is adjusting to life outside of the clock, they are still being pursued by humans who have figured out there is money to be had by 'owning' Borrowers (shudder!).

Although the BBC series isn't as digitally enhanced as the American movie version, we have enjoyed the British version much more. It's like comparing popcorn to chocolate cake. The popcorn can be tasty, but the cake is much more filling!

The British versions are also based more closely to the original books of the same name by Mary Norton.

Fits our family requirements of being PG, but NOT PG-B (Boring)! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Film
This movie was brilliantly filmed and acted. It is a little known gem of the highest quality. It's ashame people can't get past the subject material, because it's a rare film that is this well written, acted or filmed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Scenery
Fun fantasy film. Those who want to believe in the Loch Ness monster will enjoy this movie, and for those who enjoy the landscape of Scotland, it is not to be missed. Beautiful shots of Urquhart castle at the edge of the loch. Entertaining romantic comedy as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Film
This movie is a little known gem. Gorgeously filmed, beautifully acted, great story. This movie has been criticized for being a little light or dealing with the topic of the Loch Ness monster (which it does brilliantly), but it is one of the finest films I have ever seen. Some people can't get past the topic and others have objected to the movie because there is 20 seconds worth of monster footage. That is a shame, because it's a great one. ... Read more

There's a war goin' on in this bit o' blarney, but it's more than the feud between the fairies and the leprechauns, upon which most of the overwrought tale hangs. It's also a struggle between competing, derivative story lines in this bloated, plodding film that can't decide what it wants to be. It's part Romeo and Juliet, via the seemingly doomed romance of the princess fairy and teenage leprechaun; part contemporary romance, with anuncomfortable-looking Randy Quaid in the romantic lead; and a large partunfocused fable that fills out its Irish stew with a feud reminiscent ofIreland's Catholic-Protestant conflict while throwing in fantasticalBraveheart-style battle scenes and Riverdance-like interludes. The most stunning scenes are the fairy sequences that take place in a futuristic castle in the sky (think Wizard of Oz meets Star Wars) and theepic battles with innovative leprechaun bark-and-stick armor. It all makesfor a jumble of a long movie, which originally aired as a miniseries on NBC. --Valerie J. Nelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fall in love with Ireland
This movie literally made me fall in love....with Ireland, it's legends, it's music and especially with a certain leprechaun named Mickey Muldoon (Daniel Betts, a phenominal young actor.) The story was creative while staying true to the old Irish tales, and Shakespear's "Romeo and Juliet" theme was never used to better advantage. There were a few incongruities, and Randy Quaid and Whoopi Goldberg seemed to be cast only for their star-power. Also, while my young teenaged daughters enjoyed the whole movie, the smaller children thought that the sections encompassing the human love story were a bit long. But when the movie focused on the actual "faerie story" it was truly captivating for all involved. The vast majority of the acting was superb, the musical score was enchanting, the special effects were very well done, and the entire experience was extremely enjoyable. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who ever had a romantic bone in their body, ever loved a fairy tale, or ever dreamed of Ireland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fell In Love with It!!
I absolutely love this movie...I happened to catch some of it when it was airing on the Sci-Fi Channel and just had to buy the DVD...Whoopi brings her comedy to the movie and the love story Daniel Betts (Mickey Muldoon) and Caroline Carver(Princess Jessica) capitivates all of us with that hopeless romantic bug in us. It's a story that makes you want to fall in love and find that perfect someone. I would recommend this movie to anyone and guarantee that they will become a fan...in two words LOVE IT! and I wish I could find a guy like Mickey!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy
This movie is by far one of the best fantasy films available today. Exceptional fun for the entire family. How many movies can we really say that about anymore?

5-0 out of 5 stars The best since The Wizard of Oz!
Ok, this has got to be my all time favorite movie! It captivates you with it's two love stories, one in wich involves a fairy and a leprechaun! You'll fall in love with Ireland and all of the folklore in it. You won't only be watching the movie, you'll be part of it! I love this movie so much i just bought it on dvd here on amazon.com! You have to see this movie, and when you do, you'll want to watch it over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars wow this movie is amazing
wow i love this movie, literally. Besides the gorgeous scenery and good special effects, considering it was 1999 the movie has incredible actors and actresses. This movie has everything you want comedy, a love story worked in (actually 2), a "war", and also a bit of magic and fantasy. This movie's story line is well rounded and just amazing. I love it so much, the three hours of film is definitely worth it. haha. i watched it 4 times over a 5 day period once. a bit obsessive if you will. Aside from the story line the actors/actresses are spectacular. Daniel Betts who plays Mickey Muldoon is a great actor and most definitely HOTT! His forbidden love affair (in the movie of course) with Princess Jessica (Caroline Carver, who is also another amazing actress) is just wonderful. i mean i cant put it into words. haha i may be one of the only ones who are this obsessed(prolly not tho) BUT THE MOVIE IS AMAZING! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! haha well i HIGHLY recommend it so get it, you'll fall in love with it too, maybe not much as i have but you guaranteed to at least like it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music
Can anyone tell me where to find the soundtrack for this film?

5-0 out of 5 stars kirsty graham is my cousin, do you know how I can locate her
It is one of my favourite movies of all time.Kirsty is my cousin and I am trying to find her. Can anyone help, without invading her privacy. I realize that is important.

That is a shame, because it's a great one. ... Read more
