5-0 out of 5 stars Sex and the City: The Complete Fifth Season
I am always impressed with the ladies and their adventures. I live viCARIously (pun intended) through them. I also GET the messages of each show, which in turn, helps me when I'm weeding out and saving me from a fate with the monkey-men I have had the misfortune of dining out with and/or starting a relationship with.

I found fault with Carrie's breakup with Aidan. I thought the script was mean and portrayed Carrie as a brat and Aidan a victim. I think it could have ended better. It colored my view of her for a while, but I got over it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fianlly, a true independent film!
Brilliant direction and screenwriting meet a talented cast and what a ride they take us on. A wonderful film handled perfectly. Harrison's eye is laser-like it its ability to suck the truth out of his unique characters. An impressive piece of late 20th American Cinema. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Westerns Spoofed As Bowling Parody Strikes
With comic panache and a bold visual style that belies the film's no-budget origins, the exquisite SPARE ME twists conventions of the Western and thriller genres within its parallel universe of bowling monomania. Unlike most one note spoofs, though, New York director Matthew Harrison's first feature is sure-footed, sustaining interest and laughs.

The movie's beginning is pure tongue-in-cheek Western, as a mysterious stranger from Akron slouches into town. Stopping in a Pro Shop (the movie's equivalent to a saloon), the disgraced pro bowler Theo Skinner, who has been put on 100 year suspension for bashing the head of a victorious opponent with his bowling ball, asks where he can find the legendary Buzz Fazeli. The stage seems set for a classic showdown between young gunslinger and old. But once he finds the philosophical former champ, Theo reveals that he's the son Buzz never knew he had, and he's hoping Buzz can help him get back on the circuit. The old bowler, grown fat and cynical, won't commit himself just yet.

Something is rotten down in the lanes. Theo finds out that the local kingpin is the slimy Miles Kastle, for whom Buzz runs an illicit dwarf-bowling spectacle after hours. Theo first resists, then succumbs to the charms of Sheila, Kastle's rebellious daughter who compulsively mutilates Barbie and Ken dolls. But the Kastle family saga doesn't stop there, as Sheila's lunatic brother Junior - who's way to fond of his sister - has just escaped from the asylum and won't be happy to find she has a boyfriend.

The cast is ably led by actor Lawton Paseka, who looks like Ricky Nelson gone to seed. Christie MacFadyen is terrific as Sheila, and Mark Alfred is a hoot as Buzz. There are plenty of striking bowling puns by screenwriter Christopher Grimm. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Woods is wacky!!
I liked it. woods was wacky as Corrigans uncle and it was funny to see Woods get hit y that bus at the end, hilarious. Michael Rapaport is absolutely awesome in this too. funny part is when Corrigans in Rapaports place with his girlfriend and his girlfriend is telling about how she raided some place that had a bunch of vibrators

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a Look
"Kicked in the Head" ain't brilliant, but it does unfold with an energy that is both youthful and honest, the way movies about young people should be. Kevin Corrigan's Redmond finds himself criss-crossing paths with gangsters, stalker girlfriends, and even a terrier tied to a shopping cart in his quest to find true love (in the guise of Linda Fiorentino as a smoky stewardess who's been around the airport a few times). Less ably plotted than heartfelt, the movie sometimes lets its hit-and-miss comedy get in the way of the better moments, like the confused Redmond's attempts at a Graduate-style reconciliation with what he thinks is the love of his life. Still, it's sincere in feeling, and any movie that can work the remake of Louis Armstrong's Bond song "We Have All the Time in the World" can't be bad. Check it out if you need to be reminded of the breezy angst of young love.

4-0 out of 5 stars The blackest of the black comedies
Man, I hate to say anything good about a film with James Woods in the credits, my personal choice as Hollywood's most irritating and unlikable actor since Victor Mature. However, he's only got a bit part, thank god, and he plays a consumate loser(not much of a stretch) so I will gleefully throw this one a prop. It's too bad this one got so much bad press. I guess people tuned out early from all the existential angst our main character, Kevin Corrigan, is bleeding all over the place. Michael Rapaport is hysterical as an enthusiastic Irish gun toting beer distributor at war with more ethnic gun toting beer distributors. Basically the same role he played in True Romance but this time he's on crack. I think I counted about 700 beers in his refrigerator? I also noticed that nobody in this movie can shoot worth a [dime]. Spoilers ahead: Have you ever seen anybody empty an entire clip from a Desert Eagle at 3 feet and hit nothing but the sky? This movie is inventive, witty, and just downright hilarious. Worth a second look. The final scene had me simultaneously rolling on the floor and searching for an airsick bag. Funny funny funny! A solid 9 beer salute.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the funniest indie film ever made!
Filmed in the lower east side of new york, the story tackles complex emotions and the struggling life of a writer. It has a great cast with Michael Rappaport's best performance doing what he does best: acting like a beefy thug. I'm not sure why Matthew Harrison never made more movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST SEE MOVIE OF THE CENTURY
For some reason all of those stuck up critics didn't like the movie. I, however, loved it. Kevin Corrigan is perfect for his role, his acting is so low key that he makes some of the funniest lines even funnier. "You pay the rent" "no" "yeah, see that could be a problem" The main reason this movie is so great is all the minor characters we meet along the way and there is at least one line you will remember from every scene that will make you laugh whenever u think about it. The best scene in the movie is when Redmond is talking with some drunk guy about the stewardist (?) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shoestring beauty
Mostly hand-held, this B&W tone-poem to New York's lower east side affectionately sketches the story of a somewhat low-life critter named Simon and the world around him. Obviously made for less than the cappucino budgets of studio films, this one deserves a place in the history of AmerIndie cinema - a funny and lovely gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning!
Movies have rarely, if ever depicted New York City streets with more biting honesty than Rhythm Thief. An Astounding film by brilliant filmmaker Matthew Harrison. A petty thief finds a unique way to surivive on the street of lower Manhattan. Harrison's watchful eye never fliches from the truth of what a man will do when he's desperate and willing. This film should be part of any film enthusiast collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid, real and exhilirating - what filmmaking should be!
If you want to see a pure, down-and-dirty independent film chock full of gritty realism, while still amazing to look at, then this is your kind of film. If you want to see the New York you'll never see from the top of a double-decker tour bus, then BUY THIS FILM! The acting is excellent, the cinematography is cutting edge and thrilling. It's sad, funny, sexy and trippy - but never in gratuitous ways. It's kind of pure, like Scorcese's "Mean Streets" and Cassavetes' films. A must if you're thinking of being a filmmaker!

5-0 out of 5 stars A knockout punch!
See the original downtown New York City street film that has spawned so many imitators."Downright exhilarating!" - Larry Worth, New York Post."Inventive, exciting, original." Martin Scorsese"A gritty, funny street romp." - John Anderson, New York Newsday. "A knockout punch!" - Kevin Thomas, LA Times."Strong, confident, devastating." - Ken Eisner, Variety. ... Read more

The complete first season of Sex and the City is available on VHS and DVD, but those not ready to commit to that kind of long-term relationship can enjoy one-night stands with this video containing the first two episodes of HBO's Golden Globe award-winning series based on the book byCandace Bushnell. Sarah Jessica Parker earned Best Actress honors as Carrie Bradshaw, a "sexual anthropologist," who writes "Sex and the City," a newspaper column that chronicles the state of sexual affairs of Manhattanites in this "age of un-innocence." Her "posse," including nice girl Charlotte (Kristin Davis), hard-edged Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and incredibly promiscuous Samantha (Kim Cattral)--not to mention her own tumultuous love life--gives her plenty of column fodder. In the first episode, Carrie and company turn the tables on "toxic bachelors" and decide to start having "sex like a man." That will change when she meets Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Episode 2 coins the term"modelizer": a guy who is obsessed with and only dates models. Sex and the City boasts an exemplary ensemble and graphic girl talk not ready for prime time on the broadcast networks (with apologies to George Carlin, it turns out there are way more than seven words you can never say on television). Some may accuse this series of male bashing, but women, after years of enduring shows of "men behaving badly," will relish the equal time. --Donald Liebenson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars exellent introduction to the series
Contains the first two episodes from Season 1 of SEX AND THE CITY.

SEX AND THE CITY - At a "thirty-something" birthday party, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends dicuss the age-old question: Can women have sex like men? Directed by Susan Seidelman

MODELS AND MORTALS - Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) makes the mistake of going out with a man who's obsessed with models. Carrie experiments with a handsome model and researches the question: How much power do beautiful people have? Directed by Alison Maclean.

Featuring Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones), Kristen Davis (Charlotte York), Chris Noth (Mr Big) and Willie Garson (Stanford Blatch).

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't stop after just 2 episodes!
I was one of those who blindly bought the entire first season. I was hooked after about 10 minutes! I have recently purchased the entire second season set and can hardly wait until the third season comes out on tape. I don't have cable TV nor do many of my friends--but we've all gotten to be big fans of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. It is so refreshing to see 4 beautiful 30-something females going through life with all its road bumps and saying exactly what's on their minds. You go, girls!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best show on TV
I love this show and I can relate to it tons like a lot of other women also can. This show makes me feel secure about being a women and about being in my own skin. I say if you havent seen any of the shows then get this and start watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated, Witty and Very Adult
These two first episodes of the 'Sex and the City' series are very, very funny and very adult. There IS a place for truly grown up humor and, unlike some other HBO series, the language and sexual situations on 'S&C' are not there for shock value, they're there because that's how some people (these very sophisticated, privleged New Yorkers) talk and act. Perhaps with a little exaggeration, but how lucky you are to be a fly on the wall! So you may, at first, be pushing your jaw closed or squirming in your seat--but hang in there. It's addictive and bet you can't just watch two.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Little Taste of Naughtiness
If you're a person not willing to shell out the bucks to purchase the entire first season either on VHS or DVD, then this small taste of the popular, Golden-Globe winning series will probably make you change your mind.

"Sex and the City: The First Two Episodes" feature a great cast of some of today's hottest young actresses, doing what the average urban professional does, talk about sex. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) will make you smile, laugh, and savor the wittiness and power the modern woman possesses when it comes to affairs of the bed.

This tape, which contains the premiere episode "Sex & The City" and the second episode "Models & Modelizers" will introduce you to their world of female naughtiness. Chris Noth who plays Mr. Big is wonderful as usual, and if he doesn't make you swoon with his charm and personality, then you have a problem. Sanford, Carrie's best gay friend is also great, and he gives viewers of what it is to be gay and single in New York City.

Purchase this videocassette if you'll like a small taste of what has to be the best show for adults on television. If you do like these episodes, then I encourage you to purchase the entire first series. You'll be a bonafide fan in no time! ... Read more
