4-0 out of 5 stars TFTDS Vol. 5--A True Part of the 80s Culture
A fixture...a "must have" for the 80's Cult-TV offbeat enthusiasts. This was the first TFTDS video I came to own, and my favorite of the six I have so far. It was interesting to see the "lighter side of hell" in the form of Clive Barker's earlier writing, which I found both amusing and clever. The series is a veritable who's who cornucopia of classic TV/movie actors as well the up-and-comers; i.e., Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Anthony Heald (The Silence of the Lambs, TV's Boston Public), Seth Green (Stephen King's "It", and later, Austin Powers' comedies, etc.) only to name a few ...The writers, directors and actors all bring something special and personal to the series and specifically to this video. It captures some of the nuances of the Twilight Zone series, but peppered with an 80s attitude and new directions in writing and overall treatment of the genre. For both the nostalgic and the first-time viewers, a treat. To me, TFTDS helped define the feel, mood and sympatico that was the 80s...Hey, I was there! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Happy 20th Anniversary, Tales from the Darkside
It's hard to believe it's been 20 years or more since co-producer George Romero's TV series first traversed the ozone highway into our living rooms. And this particular volume 6 is no exception to the creative benchmark the series set forth. Conceptually, TFTDS is a compilation of a myriad of short story writers, screen writers, etc., of this genre, put into a TV format. Team this with an eclectic mix of actors and actresses including classical, up-and-coming, Vaudevillian, oldies but goodies (golden age of TV), even Broadway, and throw in well metered direction and interesting special effects (for this era), and you have a winner, with an 80s feel. My kudos to the casting crew! In this particular tape, five episodes are taken from the series, featuring the writing skills of Robert Bloch (Psycho) and Michael McDowell (Beetlejuice). Since the writers in the series are so numerous and varied in style, the mood and feel of each are totally different from one another, and represent an albeit edgy, 80s representation of television programming. My personal favorite on this tape was "Baker's Dozen", where a greedy advertizer (Larry Manetti from Magnum PI) gets his just "desserts" by a voodoo woman who just happens to bake one "mean" cookie (Mabel King from The Wiz). Then, when the cookie lady becomes a little too powerful for her own good, she's thwarted by the elderly but crafty Aloysious who proves once again that good things come in small (kitchen rat-sized) packages. Great viewing for 8-14 year olds especially, but fun for all. In short: Clever, creepy, but not overly gory. Great for Halloween party sleepovers! A series of some of the best horror short story writers of the 80s era, put to film. P.S.--Check out the companion paperback and episodes 1-7. I have them all, and my teenage daughter and her friends are really into them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Volume of All
I believe this is the best volume of this series out of them all. It includes my favorite episode of all time, "Trouble With Mary Jane." In which a yound girl becomes possessed by a demon and her grandmother hires a pair of occultists to perform an exorcism on the little girl. Although they do succeed in the exorcism, the result is something very unexpected. Other episodes on this volume include, "The Devil's Advocate", "Ring Around the Redhead", "The Satanic Piano" (another one of my favorites), and "A Choice of Dreams". If you like twisted, strange, and unusual stories, I highly recommend this product to you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Join the Darkside!
In the second volume, I lovingly discovered that my second all-time favorite episode was included: The Devil's Advocate. My all-time favorite episode, Seasons of Belief, is on the first volume. Anyway, The Devil's Advocate stars Jerry Stiller as a smart-alec radio talk show host who neglects to see how his life is worse than those he constantly puts down over the airways. He realizes it eventually, but not before it's too late. The remaining four episodes are good, but don't exactly compare to The Devil's Advocate. These episodes include Ring Around The Redhead (starring Home Alone's John Heard), The Trouble with Mary Jane (starring Phyllis Diller), The Satanic Piano (starring Michael Warren from Hill Street Blues), and A Choice of Dreams (starring The Godfather's Abe Vigoda). Buy it for Stiller if nothing else! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Darkwolf is surprisingly good. When do we get the Sequel?
I really like horror films and make it a point to watch at least one or two new ones a week. Nobody really expects a low budget horror film to be really good, but surprisingly, I watched one this week that really was excellent. The film, Darkwolf is worth taking a look at for a lot of reasons. Here's my list of reasons why Darkwolf stands out from all the other horror films I've seen recently.

1) Really good story. People who claim the plot of this movie is stupid, don't really know how horror films are supposed to be. There's enough good story here to keep you watching for way more than the 95 minutes running time.

2) Good acting. The cast is surprisingly good. I've seen lots of them on TV, like Samaire Armstrong who is star of the television series, "The OC." She's really cute and really a good actress. Also Jamie Bergman who was in Howard Stern's TV series "Son of the Beach." and Playboy. Sasha Williams was also one of the Power Rangers. Others that are in the film are Kane Hodder who played Jason in all the "Friday, the 13th" movies, Alexis Cruz who was in Stargate, and Tippie Hedren who was in a bunch of Alfred Hitchcock films including "The Birds" which is a favorite of mine.

3) Hot Babes and more hot babes! Horror films are supposed to have hot babes and this one has more than almost all the rest put together. The good part about it is they are cool hot babes, not just stupid bimbos like most horror films. I wouldn't mind marrying any one of them. Did I mention that there is a lot of flesh too and flesh is a good thing. I won't tell you much about it, but there's this naked dance scene you got to see. Just see it and you'll know what I'm talking about.

4) Darkwolf is a really good creature. The special effects aren't the best, but this wolf's got personality. Hey, if you want brilliant special effects, go see Matrix or X-Men or something like that. in this film, it's the really great campiness of the creature that works for me. I hope the filmmakers don't screw it up in the sequel with better special effects.

5) Good characters. I'm 19 and I identified with the young people in this movie. They weren't that supid or out of touch like most other horror films. The lead character, Josie, (Samaire Armstrong) is totally believable and is a strong woman. I really like strong women in movies and real life. The cop, "Turley" played by Ryan Alosio is a cool dude. He's kind of like a really likeable James Dean sort of guy. I have to admit, I would have like him and Josie to get together by the end of the film. Maybe the'll both come back in the sequel.

6) The movie moved really fast and well directed. This film had some style, and never really slowed down. I wasn't bored for a second. It kind of reminded me of a lower budget "Terminator." It looked much better than most other cheapo horror films. I don't think the budget was very big on this movie, but it still managed to look really cool.

7) Really good extra stuff on the DVD. There's a hilarious blooper real and a well done documentary on the making of the film, where the actors, director, writer etc. are interviewed. I always like this material because it gives me more of a look into what really went on behind the scenes.

Anyway, just like I said, Darkwolf is a very cool movie. I really hope that the filmmakers do a sequel soon. Just make sure to keep most of the same characters (the one's that are left alive anyway.) I think you can buy the film for a really good price now, and it's well worth keeping in your horror library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kane Hodder is DarkWolf!!!
Kane Hodder, world famous for his portrayal of Jason in the "Friday the 13th" movies is a force to be reckoned with in "DarkWolf". Not only is he the only Jason in my mind, but he's fantastic as the human form of DarkWolf. You gotta see him in his biker uniform, transforming into the wolf creature.

This movie is not only worth seeing for Kane, but Playboy Bunny and "Son of the Beach" series star Jamie Bergman is very cool too. Along with Alexis Cruz from "Stargate" and Steven Williams from "Twenty-One Jump Street," DarkWolf packs a lot of wallop!

DarkWolf is just plain fun and not to be taken too seriously. If you just sit back and watch the stellar "B"cast do their thing, you can't go wrong!

1-0 out of 5 stars didn't even spark a match
it's easy to say my life is over when i've seen too much stupidly god awful horror movies. i'd pull the trigger before watching this movie if I were you folks. starts off at a strip joint which is a nice beginning by the way, dumb, idiotic piece about hybrid werewolves pummels into a mess with its own self. Jaime Bergman who was the chick cop killed in the hospital played on Son Of The Beach and is also David Boreanaz's, Tv's Angel, wife. Nudity is a bundle in this and the mindnumbing laughable special effects with the person computerized transforming doesnt help it. It's a junk pile to begin with. Stephen Williams from Route 666 is also in this and he dies at the beginning and Kane Hodder who played Jason in like 8 of the Jason movies plays the biker werewolf hybrid. a ***king waste

5-0 out of 5 stars After watching Darkwolf 100 times, I need a sequel!
If it's possible to wear out a DVD, I've done it with Darkwolf. After watching it at least 100 times, I finally decided that if the producers made a sequel, I could give my worn out DVD of the original movie a rest. Why have I watched is so much? Well, for starters, it's just a plain old good B-Movie. It has everything that one would expect in this type of film, and more. My girlfriend and I especially like the sequence that takes place on the roof between sexy Sasha Williams and Andrea Bogart. Why haven't we seen more of these two actresses?

If I were stranded on a deserted island, I would take a gameboy, a DVD player, a copy of "War and Peace" and Darkwolf! Hopefully by the time my boat get's shipwrecked, Darkwolf 2 will be in my posession!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst werewolf movie ever!
Bad acting , low-budget (and I mean low!)special effects, and a plot that seems to be just an excuse to film nude scenes. The characters are uninteresting and one dimensional. If you feel that you have to subject yourself to this kind of torture I recommend you rent it first and save a few bucks. Better yet, buy Bad Moon with Michael Pare' (of Eddie and the Cruisers fame)and Mariel Hemingway if you want to see a GOOD werewolf movie, because Darkwolf is a dog! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars the goth band's a hoot
Here we have a fairly pedestrian entry into the horror genre, but one not without its charm. We have a gang of teenagers sight seeing in an abandoned asylum, populated by a deranged killer.

By and large, it's a typical 80's horror film. It's largely comedic. The gore factor isn't remarkable by any means, but not bad. The best part of the movie is the all female angry political cheese-goth band. They're a hoot. Beyond that it's all here. The cheesy 80's goth band, the ridiculous plot twist, and a thoroughly respectable pointless excuse for the topless girl shot. Worth viewing if you're a horror fanatic and you have an hour and a half you were going to waste anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious horror spoof, a cult classic waiting to happen.
Doom Asylum was possibly the wierdest and simultaneously funniest eighties bi-product I have ever seen and since the first time I saw it I knew that someday I would have to own it. This film was in a class all its own, not quite horror and not quite comedy Doom Asylum fit perfectly the description of what in the opinion of my friends and myself alike would call the perfect film. We are a rare breed forever in search of just the right film to tear apart. Like MST 3000 only very different and we are not on T.V. In conclusion, don't expect to see Doom Asylum in the runnings for the prestigous movie of the century award, but if you enjoy kicking back and enjoying a bad movie now and then I think that you will be plesantly surprised by this truly original film. ... DarkWolf is just plain fun and not to be taken too seriously. If you just sit back and watch the stellar "B"cast do their thing, you can't go wrong!

it's easy to say my life is over when i've seen too much stupidly god awful horror movies. i'd pull the trigger before watching this movie if I were you folks. starts off at a strip joint which is a nice beginning by the way, dumb, idiotic piece about hybrid werewolves pummels into a mess with its own self.

Better yet, buy Bad Moon with Michael Pare' (of Eddie and the Cruisers fame)and Mariel Hemingway if you want to see a GOOD werewolf movie, because Darkwolf is a dog! ...
