I've been hearing for years about "Twin Peaks", whether by word of mouth or on the internet. It's popular to mention the numerous pop-culture moments this show created and the fact that so many shows try to imitate, and fail, this landmark show. So after reading recaps of the pilot and first couple episodes, I decided to buy the whole thing.

I took a risk and I'd do it again because this show is one of the greatest achievements of all TV time. The pilot is a perfect intro to the show, establishing the characters and plots, the main one and various subplots, that it's addictive. WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER!? The mix of light and dark, quirky humor, heavy drama, fantastic production values, and so much more! If you haven't seen any of the show, stay clear of the last 15-20 minutes. I heard about the special ending and found out that the original pilot ends at Sarah Palmer's scream after her dream. End it there, watch the rest of the series, then go back and watch the ending.

Other than that, sit back, relax, and ENJOY! And believe me, YOU WILL!

Twin Peaks is the premier for the greatest TV series ever created. Brought in to investigate the murder of Twin Peaks Homecoming Queen Laura Palmer, Agent Dale Cooper "Kyle MacLachlan" becomes wrapped up in a town full of mystery, murder, damn good coffee and killer cherry pie.

This is pretty much what any fan of the show or David Lynch needs to start with. It's the original movie/pilot, and is a great piece of work. The story, the characters, and the whole northwest environment really make for an interesting and sometimes creepy watch. Many cool actors showed up in "Twin Peaks", among them Kyle McLachlan, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Sheryl Lee, Jack Nance, and the sexy Sherilyn Fenn. If you enjoy this, seek out the VHS collectors series, episodes 1-7. Or the DVD first season, which is also episodes 1-7, minus this pilot.

So I'm sitting on this chair, in this house, on mars when this movie comes on. TWIN PEAKS. The first thing I saw was this grotesque factory-mill type place. And then there was this close-up shot of some rusty machine, and it moved...it moved with the music. Sparks were shooting out everywhere, and it was all moving to this other-worldly melody. Then waterfalls, ponds, ducks...in less than one minute, Lynch had sucked me in, shattered me, put me back together (the way he saw fit), and then he dropped me off into TWIN PEAKS.
The whole thing was beatiful. Lynch and Frost had created this soft cloud of a world that was filled shards of glass and rusty nails. It was all like a dream -a dream that you don't want to wake up from. Bobby, Donna, Shelly, Big Ed. I was lost.
"I too have been touched by the devilish one. Ahh, but when I saw the face of God..." This sleek-Norman Rockwell-wrong way on a one way street-imitation silk-nightmare is a mountain top work of art that leads you dead on into the midst of the footstool of the heavens.
-be sure to watch it in the full blossom of the evening, and you just might experience the beatific vision...FIRE WALK WITH ME.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of TV's best pilots!
If only it were on DVD! This tape contains the classic 2 hour pilot for David Lynch's extraordinary and quirky TV cult favorite, "Twin Peaks". This 2 hour intro is NOT part of the six tape "complete" series collection that has the actual 29 episodes. There is a neat, confusing, untelevised 15 minute ending that was used to "wrap up" the whole murder when this same tape was released in Europe as a made-for-TV movie. Still, it is simply Twin Peaks at its best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Intense!
Alan Rickman stars as Gregory Efimovich Rasputin, a self-styled monk who rose from obscurity to social prominence in Russia at the turn of the century. This movie follows pretty closely what history records of Rasputin's life and his dealings with the House of Romanov. Alan Rickman puts in the performance of a lifetime as Rasputin and it is easy to understand why he won the awards he did for this movie ... Greta Scacchi and Ian McKellen also star in this video and both turn in stellar performances.

Whether you're a history buff or Alan Rickman fan (or both), this is a must see! However, it is not for anyone under 18 because of the strong sexual content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rasputin
Enter the beautiful world of the last Russian Czar! This film shows the heartbreak of Alexandra, the guilt-ridden mother, Nicholas, her loving but weak husband, and Alexei, the doomed boy who would never be Czar. In an effort to save her hemopheliac son, Alexandra brings in Rasputin, an ignorant, alcoholic peasant who appears to, at times, heal the boy. The fate of Russia is affected by this man. Alan Rickman is unforgettable as the "monk", Greta Scacchi is luminous as the pitiable Czarina, and Ian McKellan makes Alexander a very human father and emperor. This movie is great for history buffs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Boy does Have Magic !
So what happens when one of the most wildly improbable figures of history is played by one of the most spelbinding of actors ?

Alan Rickman won both The Emmy and The Golden Globe awards for his portrayal of Rasputin. When Rickman accepted the award he thanked the director for allowing him to be 'self-indulgent'.

( Note to directors: If you can get Alan in your film, let him be as self indulgent as he wants!)

The script is intelligently written, it starts with a V.O. of the Czar's young son played over images of Hitler, Stalin and their wars. The Czarevich asks why we ushered in the most violent century in history? Why his good father and mother were hated and yet were replaced with monsters. . .

This is a good start. We are not going to get corny here.

On film, Rasputin, the so called "Mad Monk " ( he was neither ) has, like Cardinal Richelieu, become synonimous with hammy historical melodrama.

There have been dozens of attempts to dramatize his story and, graded on their merits, let alone on a curve by comparison to this great film, they have been er...less than brilliant. Even including a 1932 version with John, Ethel and Lionel Barrymore ( The only film all 3 appeared in together ) to much hoakier renderings.

And for those of us who DO know Russian history, yep. This time it's accurate.

Ian McKellan heads the superb supporting cast. Everything comes together and plays wonderfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, touching, amusing, spectacular...
The story of the last Romanovs starts from Siberia 1991: their bones are found and the boy, Alexei, introduces: "This is my mother, this is my family..." Then a leap back to 1880's and to a boy, who seems to read minds. 20 years later he - Rasputin - is doing hard labour in Siberia, until Virgin Mary appears to him. Very swiftly the plot takes us to St. Petersburg, where Rasputin convinces others of his mission. The boy, Alexei, narrates, how he came to heal him and was their only friend, no matter what people said about him later. The monk, who looks like a madman, knows about Alexei's illness, although it has been a state secret, and by speaking about sailing he takes the pain away, into himself, as it seems. A hypnotist, a fraud, a madman, a magical healer?

Rasputin convinces the Tzarina and later the Tzar of his abilities, so he has a place in court, although he is a very embarrassing man, uneducated, unpredictable and too fond of wine and gypsy prostitutes. Behind the scenes Russian people suffer, the First world war (predicted by Rasputin) is started and the last minutes of the Romanov family are at hand. Everything is told very economically, nothing too much and yet everything you need to know, with authentic film material cut into the story.
The film is a feast for the eyes and mind, even though some historical facts aren't exact. Anyway, this isn't a documentary. As a story it works like a dream, the actors are unbelievably good - so it really feels unfair to start talking about Rickman and not others. So I'm just saying: they are all wonderful. But the movie is called "Rasputin".

I've recently looked up films of Alan Rickman, partly because some of them are hard to find, but mostly because his way of acting is simply addictive. I think I finally know, why. It's a kind of pornography - of human soul. (Which is an embarrassing discovery, porn really isn't my cup of tea...) His Rasputin isn't just a calculating monk, who sees an opportunity to get a comfortable life, wine and women and power over people, but a man, who lives from moment to moment, uneducated, without manners, sensual, in some ways stupid and in some ways clever. At times you see a strong, manipulative, hypnotic monk who makes you believe in God and Virgin Mary and seems to be able to look into your soul, at times there is child-like sincerity and vulnerability. He believes he has a mission, but it also gives him pain, he sees things but doesn't see, how his conduct affects the falling empire. "I didn't choose to be holy!" he says like a weak human being, who has been trusted with a burden, that is much too heavy. Strong, vulnerable, wise, fallable, loving, selfish... Is this the real Rasputin? Very possibly. Human beings are just as mixed and as capable of being both angelic and devilish as Rickman shows - in this and other movies.

Oh yes, I felt great pity for Rasputin, though I wouldn't want him living in my house. And I'm glad I don't know Rickman in person, he seems to know too well, what we people are like. Who wants her mind to be x-rayed? Even by Rickman (who is, I admit, in his own way, enchanting)?

Watch this movie, if you want to understand history, people or acting. Look at these actors and actresses, they don't act, they are the characters. Rickman is just the best example of how to become someone else than one really is, whether it is Rasputin, Mesmer or other things he's done. Watch this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh it is so good . . .
There are no words to describe Alan Rickman in this movie. He is so magical and passionate and moving and seductive. I cannot even think of another film where an actor gives a performance like this, even the rhythm of his speech was magical.

The rest of the cast is great as well, Ian Mckellen and the woman who played the Tsarina, she was very beautiful and touching, right down to James Frain whom I never grow tired of seeing pop up in historical films. I confess I'm not an expert on that time in Russian history, but as far as I know the events in the movie are pretty much accurate. I liked how the film showed his appetite for sex and alcohol but reserved judgement, as I don't believe a person is sinister or evil simply because they're a bit lusty... I like how the film doesn't make him out to be some villain wanting control of the Court, but reminds us that it was the nobles who came to *him* and brought him into political affairs instead of just leaving him to heal the boy. In the end, he was a martyr, and the movie has no overbearing message to leave you, just to show you an episode in history and enlist Alan Rickman to demonstrate, in all his mystical glory, why this man might have created the stir that he did. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better...
Could have been much better though some of the scenes in this film are worth watching...if you've read the book. Throughout the scenes depicting Morgaine's training...well, lets say those are the most worthwhile ones. Juliana Margulies was perfectly cast in this role. Joan Allen and Anjelica Houston also give great performances. However, if I were to have had my hand in the making of this movie, I would have added at least an extra two hours to it so that it didn't seem to be moving so fast. I also would have (and pardon my saying so) recast Mordred, Arthur, Lancelot, and Uther. The women did fine...the men...well, lets say they need dialect training and some acting lessons.
Oh, and as a side note, the music (especially Loreena McKennitt's Mystic's Dream) is fantastic. Go get the soundtrack.

3-0 out of 5 stars Think of it as an intro to the book
Most tellings of the King Arthur story focus on Arthur and Merlin, and perhaps mention Gueneviere as the unfaithful wench that broke up the great friendship of Arthur and Lancelot. Marion Zimmer Bradley took a twist on the story, telling it from the point of view of the 'dark witch' instead of the 'golden haired beauty'.

It's a tale full of the raw power of medieval England, where a belief in nature and natural spirits was vying with the approach of Christianity. It tells not only of women and men's different views of the world, but of love triangles, Christianity ousting the 'old ways', and a changing of culture.

The TNT miniseries version stars Anjelica Huston, Julianna Margulies, and Joan Allen in the girl-power production. Huston is the magestic matriarch of Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, who in most stories is just the giver-of-the-sword to Arthur. Here she's the protector of Avalon, the center of the old power, one that is being replaced slowly by the bells of Christianity. They in fact share the same physical space, but only those with the power to believe can cross into Avalon.

Margulies is Morgaine, Arthur's half-sister. They share a mother, but Arthur is born when Uther Pendragon lusts after Morgaine's mother Igraine and through deception beds her. Igraine and Viviane are sisters, but while Viviane defends the old ways, Igraine turns to the new (Christianity). The third sister, Morgause, is jealous of the other two and causes quite a bit of trouble.

This was always a favorite book of mine, so I was very curious how they would bring it on screen. The locations were gorgeous - it was shot in Czechoslovakia and has the primitive wildness that medieval England would have had. The costumes were also gorgeous, and the actors and actresses were top notch. I really enjoyed the relationship Morgaine has later in her life.

I do understand that certain of the themes are sensitive to a TV viewing audience. After all, Arthur and his half-sister Morgaine sleep together (not realizing they're related) when they're teenagers, and she bears a son from this union. Also, Arthur and Lancelot were attracted to each other in the book. These layers of sexuality added another dimension to the story, but they were a bit too risque for many viewers. The story was altered to change the way a lot of this was presented.

Also, the scene where Morgaine and Gueneviere first meet was supposed to contrast the beautiful-blonde-Christian vs the small-dark-pagan - at least that's how Morgaine saw it. Because the book is told from Morgaine's point of view, it's not always the reality, of course, but her impression of it. But in the miniseries they stripped away a lot of the dialogue so you loose some of that sense.

And then, near the end, it slips completely away, and where at the end of the book I'm thrilled to have gone on the journey, with the miniseries I wonder just exactly was the spot where they went wrong. I think the key is to watch it and think of it as a way to get people to read the book. It's really enjoyable as a good movie to watch, and if it gets more people to read the book, that's fine by me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting
I haven't read the book. I watched this movie without any expectations whatsoever, or any knowledge of the plot. Honestly, I didn't even know it was about the legend of King Arthur.

The movie was far better than any of the other Arthur films I have watched. It surpasses Merlin in terms of believability, Camelot in terms of maturity, and almost equals Excalibur. Julienna Marguiles portrays a very convincing Morgaine. The whole story is told from her point of view, and indeed it was a gorgeous retelling. For once, we are given the refreshing view that Morganne was humane, and good. We are given new explanations for the incest between Arthur and Morganne, as well as the blackness of Mordred's character, which is now blamed on Morganne's aunt, Morgause.

What intrigued me about the movie was the portrayal of the Pagan and Christian society, and most interestingly, about how the Pagan goddess still lives on as the Virgin Mary (I still find that interesting, although I don't quite agree with it). Certain things, like having Excalibur return to the goddess and fading off into the silhoette of the Christian cross puzzles me a little to what the symbolic meaning behind it implies. This intermingling of both religions - the link established wasn't as clear as it should have been.

Beautiful performances from Anjelica Huston (The Lady of the Lake), and Joan Allen (Morgause). I didn't really think that Samantha Mathis was suitable to play Guinevere (she didn't really look the part, nor act the part)... and Michael Vartan surprisingly pulled off the part of Lancelot well (Franco Nero is by far one of the most atrocious Lancelots ever). Hans Matheson (Mordred), a relatively new actor, does a better job here than what he did in Les Miserables.

A good cast, and a good movie. I found it a little controversial, and at times slightly disturbing, but it keeps the mystery and intrigue surrounding Avalon as palpable as ever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously disappointing
I was glad to hear that someone was making a miniseries of this, and Juliana Margulies seemed like an excellent choice for Morgaine. Unfortunately, the finished production did not live up to expectations. The book dealt not only with the legend through the eyes of women, but with the clash of cultures. The movie paid lip service to this theme, but didn't really grapple with adequately. I don't think I watched it all the way through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical and Mystical Experience
Yes, I have read the book, and while there are some differences between the film and the book, the most important parts of the story are in the movie. The actors and the rest of the crew did a brilliant job of bringing the magic and suspense to the screen. The music was beautiful and perfect for the movie and the setting is visually stunning. If you're not too picky about details, you should enjoy the movie whether you've read the book or not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly good but very disturbing movie.
This movie is based on Herbert Selby's cult novel from the early 1960s. The novel traces the lives of some rough urban characters (prostitutes, street hoodlums, transvestites, striking dock workers) in 1950s Brooklyn. Think of this as "On the Waterfront" without the sugar coating. A friend of mine hates the movie because he feels it is nightmarish and lacks a moral center. I like the movie for just this reason, as deep down I think life is that way. The movie is a harsh and uncompromising look at people whose dreams don't work out; in fact, the dreams often explode in the characters' faces. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stephen Lang, Stephen Baldwin, Jerry Orbach and Alexis Arquette are fantastic. Don't watch this with kids or with people with delicate sensibilities---it's violent, sexually graphic, and full of verbal abuse and foul language.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nightmarish in the extreme!
(...) As it was, this movie profoundly depressed me. (...)There is tenderness in the depiction of a young man's adoration for a prostitute (Jennifer Jason Leigh), as well as comic relief (of sorts) in the complications arising from an unplanned pregnancy. Unfortunately these moments are few and far between, and the cumulative effect of numerous beatings (starting with the very first scene!), cowardice and sexual violence will greatly disturb most viewers.

The acting, however, is top-notch. The entire cast is thoroughly believable - depressingly so in the case of Stephen Baldwin and his fellow thugs. Director Uli Edel is a master at creating atmosphere, and an operatic sense of doom permeates the entire movie, helped in no small measure by Mark Knopfler's beautiful but ominous score.

As a movie I would give Last Exit to Brooklyn five stars for its execution, but just one star for its sense of life. Nihilists will love it for reinforcing their own bleak view of life, but romantics should definitely give it a miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why the Dodgers left Brooklyn
It's the 1950s. Under President Eisenhower's administration, everyone has a house in the suburbs, a decent job, a gas-guzzling car, and a basic "Leave It to Beaver" lifestyle.

Not so, said Hubert Selby, in his novel, LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN. For a good deal of the working class, times were still tough. Preyed upon by crime, toyed with by factory owners and unions, and, ultimately, shackled by their own ignorance, the working class had their promise of a white picket fence and primrose garden vacated. In Brooklyn, particularly, things were acutely tough. Manufacturing jobs were on a rapid decline, as companies moved out of town or out of state (which was why those companies remaining in Brooklyn were able to mess with their employees: take it or leave it, was their attitude). At the same time, an influx of immigrants seeking jobs made the hunt for work even more competitive--another bonus for the remaining factory owners. Slums rapidly worsened, so much so that Dodger owner Walter Alston decided his team's future was in jeopardy. L.A. looked like a much safer place for a stadium.

But neither Selby nor director Uli Edel portrayed this working class as merely innocent victims. Neither the book nor the film is a didactic rant about class warfare. The poor had their own vices of greed, brutality, and dissipation. Just about every other scene has someone going through someone else's wallets, union funds or pockets. If they aren't doing that, they're drinking, fighting, or whoring. It's a pretty dismal world. The natural response to this film might be: "Wait a minute. Not everyone working class Johnny-Punchclock guy was a criminal. Most people worked hard and honestly." Of course, this is true but it's not the film's concern. This is a study of those who were trapped in that world, and this study is compelling and horrifying.

Uli Edel has perfectly captured this bleak world, either bathing everything in a garish light or obscuring it in heavy shadows. The performances are brilliant. There's no understating Jennifer Jason Leigh's gritty and powerful performance. Also keep an eye out for a cameo by Hubert Selby as the driver who hits Georgette. Not for the weak-stomached and definitely not for kids, LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN is as cinematographically close to the innermost circle of urban hell as you can get.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Hell of a Film
Last Exit to Brooklyn tells a story the way it needs to be told...realistically. This film is not for everyone. If you can't accept the fact that some people do behave like this than this film is not for you. Everyone doesn't live in a fantasy land and Last Exit to Brooklyn shows this. People brought up in conditions like these or who are familiar with people such as this can vouch that people are truly like this in some places. It may not be an excuse for how others act but it is real and this film proves that. This is a powerful, moving film not to be looked upon if you're easily offended out of your own ignorance and live in a rose-colored world. If you have the ability to watch a movie, understand it and be taken in with what the film represents ( without feeling threatened ) then this movie is a keeper. If you can't see that Last Exit to Brooklyn deplicts reality for people other than the super fortunate, rent Sweet Home Alabama because this movie is not for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nasty, Ugly, Wrong
People who think that the working class or anyone who is down and out is necessarily brutal and self-serving will love this film. For those who like their "social realism" as ugly and unambiguous as possible, this is the film for you. Most of the characters are one-dimensional,yell their lines and are either outrightly cruel/unfeeling (practically everyone) or hystrionic/narcissistic victims doomed to be wiped out by the end of the film (eg Gorgette the transvestite, Tra La La the town "tramp"). Almost all are totally unsympathetic--practically no-one in this film is worth caring about. Sorry, but real life is NOT like this, not even amongst the "downtrodden" who obviously make such sensationalist fodder for those eager to "slum it" vicariously for a couple of hours. This film might titilate nihilistic 20 yr olds or middle class suburbanites and has clearly thrilled all the critics (and almost everyone else in this forum) but I found it stupid and ugly (and boring). Jennifer Jason Leigh is terrific, I must add. That is the only good thing I can say about this film, I'm afraid. For those looking for uncompromising social realism and characters written with compassion rather than contempt, try reading Steinback's "Cannery Row" or see the movie of his novel "Of Mice and Men" or, for a more contemporary, very bleak but infinitly better film than Last Exit see "Nil by Mouth" directed by Gary Oldman. ... For a couple of hours in 1990, David Lynch took over the network airwaves and subtly, subversively transformed American television forever. Amazingly, the TV series that followed this rich and strange feature-length pilot became an international phenomenon as people all over the world became obsessed by one question: Who killed Laura Palmer? Twin Peaks is the apotheosis of all things Lynch, and arguably his single greatest achievement. Set in the dark, damp, woodsy atmosphere of a small mountain town in the Pacific Northwest, Twin Peaks is a murder mystery, detective saga, soap opera, sitcom--the essence of television distilled into one mind-blowing serial. Lynch subverts TV conventions right and left, not the least by concentrating on the grief of Laura's friends and family, and orchestrating their tears into a symphony of mourning. Twin Peaks is about the endlessly seductive idea of "mystery," of the ways human beings find to deal with the unknown. It was never about solutions; after all, answers (which are invariably anticlimactic) only kill the Mystery! So, although it took another year or so before Lynch and his partner Mark Frost were eventually forced (by the network and public opinion) to reveal the identity of Laura Palmer's murderer, the tantalizing clues are the real heart of the enterprise, and they're all right here in the debut. And so are some excerpts from Agent Cooper's surrealistic dream sequence (which appeared in the third episode of the series), featuring the dancing, backward-talking little "Man from Another Place," as part of a special European-release finale (you wouldn't want to use the word "conclusion") for this video version. --Jim Emerson ...

Still, it is simply Twin Peaks at its best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstandingly brilliant movie
This is definitely first class thriller. Body Of Evidence takes U 2 a world where no other movie has taken U B4.

Madonna is in the lead role of Rebecca Carlson, a beautiful woman charged 4 the murder of her much older, but wealthy boyfriend, with a bad heart condition. Willem DaFoe plays Frank DeLaney, the lawyer who must defend Rebecca. But Frank is suddenly drawn 2 Rebecca and after a steamy seduction, Frank becomes another one of Rebecca's dominated puppets.

Other stars include Joe Montegna who plays Garrett, the Lawyer who is up against Rebecca. Anne Archer, who playes Joanne, the wealthy guy's secretary, and Julianne Moore who plays Sharon, Frank's attractive, but naive wife.

Madonna may have been great in films like Desperatey Seeking Susan, Shanghai Surprise, Who's That Girl, The Bloodhounds Of Broadway, Dick Tracy, and A League Of Their Own but Madonna delivers N outstanding, steamy performance in this classic thriller. I urge all of U 2 buy this movie. U will all B deeply surprised.

3-0 out of 5 stars A poor mans Basic Instinct
Firstly, I didn't think this was a bad film at all.
Its has an interesting storyline (see above), the acting is acceptable (its a shame we have to mention this when talking about Madonna's movies), and the sex scenes are definately raunchy (actually, more explicit than I would have expected - however this was during Madonna's SEX / rebellious period).
The problem is that it came AFTER Basic Instinct which is a far superior film, more stylish, more dramatic and more enjoyable. The script let the film down at times too, giving Madonna some silly one-liners "Have you ever seen animals make love Frank? Its brutal".
Enjoyable and definately worth a viewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite sexy, suspensful, provocative!!!
I sincerely found this movie provocative, sexy, and quite entertaining. Madonna was more than acceptable and convincing in her role as a manipulating, calculating gold digging sultress. I find the problem so many have w/ her acting, is just her mere presence. Right from the first scene shes in, the director blatantly was trying not to show her face to keep the suspense cause you "knew" it was Madonna, but waits until a sudden close up of her face. Once you see its her, here mere presence seems to cause more of a distraction cause its "Madonna". Therefore, once she speaks her 1st line she probably loses credability from most viewers. But I thought the dialogue, plot, sex/ nude scenes were extremely hot, climatic and natural. Some say there was no chemistry between Madonna and Defoe, I totally disagree, they were blended VERY well together, and Madonna clearly "taught" him a thing or two ;). Madonnas high point in the movie was the court scene where she really display some amazing acting chops!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh my God
Oh dear. this is an abysmal movie. So abysmal that after twenty minutes I found myself fast-forwarding through the movie, admittedly pausing to view the dirty bits involving Madonna and Defoe. The trouble is that Defoe is just about the most unnattractive actor in Hollywood, and Madonna, whilst both beautiful AND sexy, is somehow portrayed in this movie as an utterly sexless thing, almost like one of those blow-up dolls with '3 working orifices'. Or is that orifi? Anyway, the whole film sucked. Mind you, that Willen Defoe is a lucky S.O.B. The muff-munching scene in the carpark was obviously real.

1-0 out of 5 stars Madonna, you are not Monroe
Madonna, you are not, was never, and never will be Marilyn Monroe. This is a BAD movie, but the best scene is when Madonna is put on trial. When she is on the stand, she gives the movie's best line. You'll know when you see it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "not just friends ~ they're blood brothers"
This tale penned by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg, with director Ulrich Edel, starring Jonathan Lipnicki (Stuart Little~Jerry Maguire) befriends a young vampire boy whose family needs an ancient amulet to become mortal again. They're not just best friends ~ they're blood brothers ~ as together they embark on a grand adventure.

Warner Home Video, presents an inoffensive kiddie movie ~ has enough special effects, magic and cheeky humor to keep the "Big Kids" (Mom/Dad/Grandparents/Aunts/Uncles) from squirming too much in their seats.

The soundtrack ~ "The Little Vampire: Music From & Inspired by (2000 Film)" ~ inclusive are 12 tracks of fun-filled-non-stop music, sure to satisfy the most finicky blood-sucker for all the evening festivities...check out my music review ~ see "Amazon.Com/Music" and look for me ~ both reviews will give you something to sink your teeth into!

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT just for kids....
Although this movie will definitely appeal to children because the hero is only eight years old and has some great adventures, it has enough wit to keep older kids and adults entertained as well.

The Thompson family (mom, dad and son, Tony) is living in Scotland while dad designs a golf course for Lord McAshton. Tony is having a hard time fitting in and making new friends and begins having really vivid bad dreams about vampires. Then one night, the dreams turn to reality when a small vampire invades Tony's room, trying to hide from a Vampire hunter, intent on ridding the countryside of all it's 'undead' inhabitants.

Fortunately, these 'undead' are not really interested in munching on the human population all that much. They are all members of the clan of Sackville-Bagg who have found that there is a way in which they can become human, if they can only locate and recover a lost medallion by the time of the full moon.

With lots of help from Tony, they try to stay one step ahead of the Vampire hunter and complete the quest for freedom from vampirism.

Without doubt, Jonathan Lipnicki is one of the most charming and natural actors around. I have loved every role of his that I have seen and "Tony" is no exception. Whether he is 'vamping it up' with fake vampire fangs and a cape or joyfully flying through the air with his new friend Rudolph, he is a treat to watch.

The younger actors, Rollo Weeks, Anna Popplewell and Dean Cook as a rebellous teenager are also excellent and likable as the vampire kids. Other favorite characters are Richard E Grant and Alice Krige as loving parents to their little brood of vampirettes and the scene when they meet Tony's parents and charm them into a trip to the bluff is hilarious.

This is a really good, wholesome family movie that will entertain all the members of the family from the youngsters all the way up to Grandma. It's not saccharin sweet and has a little bit of an edge but is gentle enough that it won't give even the little kids nightmares.

I've viewed this movie several times and still enjoy it every time! This one is a 'keeper' and earns five stars from me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a children's movie
I took my little nine year old brother to see this dud. What a terrible movie.

I was expecting a light hearted children's film and instead what I got was a mean-spirited adventure in Christian bashing with scenes that have no place whatsoever in a film aimed at a young audience.

The producer's bigotry against Christians is evident right from the start in its depiction of the so-called "vampire hunter".

He is easily the most disturbing character in the film. For starters his oversized crucifix looks like it was produced at a Las Vegas neon sign factory and his vehicle is a nightmarish cross between a mac truck and a steel mill. If this was meant to be funny, believe me, it wasn't.

The worst scene that I saw is when the boy at the center of the film gets trapped in a crypt and a rather large black rat begins crawling towards him.

I am flabbergasted that someone would think of this as legitimate children's entertainment. Graves and rats! Are you kidding me?! Absolutely despicable.

Throw in more nightmarish images of flying cows and children being given dead mice as gifts and you've got yourself one horrendously bad/disturbing movie that doesn't belong anywhere near impressionable youngsters.

I took my little brother and walked out of the theater rather than subject to him to any more of this garbage.

Shame on the people who made this.

5-0 out of 5 stars the little vampire

5-0 out of 5 stars Purgatory
As you can see from the past reviews, nobody has scored it less than 5 stars. What an amazing movie! It's too bad this didn't go to theatres first so it could be enjoyed on the big screen. It definately deserves a transfer to DVD with all the extras so hopefully that will be coming soon. I'm very picky about the westerns that I'll watch since a good one so rarely comes along these days. But Purgatory is great! Like others have said, it's a western with twists and surprises like no other before it. And for "Hollywood" or TNT as the case may be, to put out a movie with a moral or faith based message, well that's just very incredible and very welcome considering the messages that are conveyed in most movies today. Purgatory is 5 stars and then some. And at this price, you can't go wrong!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great acting ... good movie ... (if you have FAITH ) !
PURGATORY is a well-directed combination of TWILIGHT ZONE and hard-charging action Western. More than many movies of this ilk, its success absolutely depends on the viewer's acceptance of the town of REFUGE's premise. Refuge and its strange populace and "special rules" can be regarded with keen interest or merely observed as an intriguing, clever gimmick. The fine acting and ironic plot employing several well-staged confrontations between good "bad" guys and very bad, bad guys can devolve into a puzzle being "worked-out" (much the way the highly overrated, in my estimate, PI is). Or, it can develop into an existential drama concerning ULTIMATE CHOICE and its CONSQUENCE rendered in a violent climax. Sam Shepard and Eric Roberts are excellent as the film's well-matched protagonists where the ambiguities of goodness must confront clear-cut rapacity and viciousness in evil. Brad Rowe is the man-in-the-middle who has lived a life of fantasy and must suddenly make a deliberate choice between a dangerously real GOOD (and love) or dangerously real EVIL (and damnation). Ultimately, the movie depends on PERCEPTION: what one chooses to regard as reality and the nature of goodness and evil, both presented as Temptation. PURGATORY is a good movie...maybe a great one... if you watch it with a bit of FAITH!

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodness in the heart can ALWAYS prevail
I have always despised just about every western made except for less than a handful. "Purgatory" and "The Quick And The Dead" are just about the only ones that I enjoy. "Purgatory" has such a deep underlying meaning to me...it's very hard for me to put it into words. But I can say that this movie shows to its viewers that through one's own personal convictions, no matter how rough life's road may get...salvation and peace of mind can and will be one of the eternal rewards. Sam Shepherd does a GREAT JOB as Sheriff and even though I love Eric Roberts, I thought that he was a "real S.O.B.!!!!!". I mean...whatever happened to "love thy brother" especially your own blood? My own brother is a real ass and even though I don't like him 90% of the time...I STILL LOVE HIM. Watch this movie, you won't be disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars the big fight scene is the best
The overall movie is great. It takes a few minutes to discern the town of Refuge and what it's all about. Roberts is great as usual as a real bad guy and Sonny is so innocent it's a wonderful contrast. But the best parts are the kicking big showdown fight and the indian. I can't wait to get this on DVD. Oh and the gore isn't bad compared to most movies now.

5-0 out of 5 stars i loved this movie

5-0 out of 5 stars WOULD YOU LIKE SOME COFFEE?
This image of the Red Room, this world of Twin peaks is horrifying!! I must admit I cried for hours after the ending of this show. I was extremely depressed, I still get depressed about and the first time I watched it was in January 2000. I really love this tape. I love TWIN PEAKS. It needs more to it. I want Lynch to direct another TWIN PEAKS movie!! I want MORE!!! PEAKS IN MY MIND HASN'T DIED. FRANKLY, I see Peaks still around, in a spooky world!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not finished...
These final episodes are perfectly showcase all that made Twin Peaks an excellent show. They have every bit of the symbolism, surrealism, and humor that gave it it's fan base.

Unfortunatly it's very obvious that the last episode was intended to be a cliff-hanger and that they expected to make more. Be warned that while it is very interesting, many questions are left un-ansered(and never will be), many new questions are asked, and the audience never knows what the fate of several of the characters is.

Of course, if you are reading this I assume you have seen the other episodes already and you're probably going to see these regardless of what I say. Enjoy...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Finish to the Series
These are the final five episodes of the "Twin Peaks" series; they are somewhat of a redemption after some weak episodes immediately preceeding these. The plots are much stronger, especially those focusing on Agent Cooper. His attraction to Annie Blackburn is nicely played (with a strong romantic piece by Angelo Badalamenti). The Windom Earle plot becomes intriguing as it becomes bigger than Earle (who is overplayed by Kenneth Welsh) and delves into the supernatural (and, as mentioned in another review, becomes an inspiration for the X-Files).

The other plotlines are also strong. Especially intriguing is the Andrew Packard character, as he (along with Catherine and Pete) deals with the mysterious black box. Dan O'Herlihy has a great stage presence as Packard; I wish he could have been featured more in the series.

The build up to Episode 29 is nicely done -- Lynch's direction of the final episode has that first season feel to it (though a little darker). It would have been a great season-ending cliffhanger (I would have been interested to see if Major Briggs went to the rescue at the Black Lodge), but remains an odd end to the series.

For these espisodes, the only major complaint is that they deserve to be on DVD. For the future, I would love to see some sort of continuation of the story nearly ten years later. It would be fun to have a Lynch/Frost/Chris Carter collaboration on a movie combining "Twin Peaks" with the "X-Files." It probably won't happen, but this series deserves more.

5-0 out of 5 stars AH, THE SUBTLE WONDERS OF THE RED ROOM....
WOULDN'T IT BE WEIRD IF THIS WAS REALLY THE WAY IT ALL ENDED? WITH NO SENSE OF CLOSURE, OR POSSIBILITY OF REDEMPTION. JUST CONFUSING, TWISTED, DISHEARTENING, AND ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! COMMENTS WELCOME AT nick82e@hotmail.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you like the X-files, watch these last episodes
When they first aired Twin Peaks I; like many other people, didn't really understand and was very confused by the last section of episodes, but since then we've been treated to shows like the X-files and Dark Skies, and it's now alot easier to understand references to "Project Bluebook" and other UFO and paranormal-related stuff. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Gripping! - Why No Subtitles?
If you are interested in the substance abuse genre, this movie is the most realistic, powerful, and disturbing I've seen. Compare this to the likes of "Days of Wine and Roses", "The Man With the Golden Arm" and "28 Days", and the others all seem lame and glossed over. The only film that I thought came close to the level of realism of "Chrstiane F." was "Panic in Needle Park".

This film takes you to the horrifying depths of heroin addiction, as excruciatingly experienced by a German teenager and her "friends". Based on a true story from the 1970's Berlin drug scene, the title character is from a dysfuntional family who eventually falls into the grips of heroin addiction and prostitution by age 14. Great soundtrack, with Bowie (I especially liked the version of Heroes that is sung partly in German), great depiction of the 70's club scene in Berlin, which was rampant with drug use. Even though in color, has the gritty feel of a noir. The film also captures dead-on the desperation of addiction, and how the addicts life becomes all about the next shot. The film also does a great job of conveying the depravity and desolation of the Berlin Zoo train station, a haven for prostitues and addicts at the time.

Based on a book of the same name (unfortunately, last I checked, the book was out of print), the movie of course does not go into as much detail (what movie based on a book does?) but nonetheless, this is a brutal, accurate portrait of the ravages of drug use.

Two things, if you can find the book, buy it. The book was riveting and goes into much greater depth of the girls family background, and her early drug use pre-heroin addiction. Also the movie condenses her many "cold turkey" episodes into one or two instances, and the true horror of her withdrawals are much more graphic and real in the book.

Secondly, I would have given this 5 stars if the movie were subtitled instead of dubbed. It takes a lot away from the film, and I would recommend waiting until it is released (hopefully) in German with subtitles. I was fortunate enough to have seen the film in the theatre in German with subtitles, and it made a big difference.

A classic movie of this genre, a must see, even with the dubbing!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS FILM IS A MUST!
I first saw and heard "Wir Kinderen Vom Banhof Zoo" when I was a child and I will never forget the impact it had on me. Beyond the obvious "Dare to Keep Kids Off Drugs" message, this film and music are a bittersweet snapshot of a tantilizing, tragic, and triumphant era gone by as captured so beautifully in Bowie's epic song "Heroes." Watching it now in a new millenium it still packs the same punch it did twenty years ago. Although it is unfortunate that a sub-titled edition has not yet been released, the original German language version is a must for anyone who ever lived on the edge and survived to tell about it. Regardless of what language you speak, you'll understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harrowing ordeal
...as any good movie that explores the world of drug addiction should be. Quite graphic in its depiction of the consequences of drug addiction, and the heartbreaking, and seemingly unbreakable, bonds involved. Just when you think someone is about to break free, they get sucked back in. Very sad, and frustrating.

About as searingly graphic, if not more, as "Requiem for a Dream", another excellent movie that should convince anyone who watches it to avoid the scourge that is drugs. Another movie you wouldn't want to watch too frequently, due to its gruesome honesty and the fact that the images are burned into your brain.

Excellent soundtrack from David Bowie, including live concert footage. Most of the songs are from his "Heroes" album, which was written and recorded in West Berlin, and conveys the feelings that living in West Berlin evoked in Bowie. Ideal soundtrack then for Christiane F, being set in West Berlin.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Movie About Youth
I agree with the previous reviewers that the stark, realistic depiction of drug use is a powerful aspect of Christiane F., but there is so much more that makes the movie outstanding. It brought tears to my eyes the first time I watched it because of the way it portrays a young person's search for love, for acceptance, to find meaning. To me this movie drives home the frailty as well as the value of life.

More specifically, the movie works because it shows a variety of human emotions: Christiane's anger at her mother; her boredom in the grey concrete world of West-Berlin; her tender love for Detlef and pure desperation in the end. We really get a glimpse of her world and why she gets into drugs, even though everybody warns her about it. It's not simple peer pressure, but her own desparate need to belong and her compassion with Detlef that drives Christiane. Despite its length (130 min.) and the limited number of locations, the movie keeps you glued to the screen because it relies on competent, subtle acting rather than beating the viewer over the head with fake "dramatic" scenes. In contrast to most movies today, music is used rather sporadically, yet all the more effectively. My favorite scene is in the beginning when the youth gang runs through an empty mall, while we hear David Bowie's "Heroes" in full blast. I couldn't convey more effectively the sheer enthusiasm of being young and alive. Director Uli Edel (whose oevre includes other highs such as Last Exit to Brooklyn and lows as Body of Evidence; he also directed one Twin Peaks episode) effectively switches between fast and slow motion, dialog and image driven scenes. This is the perfect example of a well-paced movie.

Even to those English speakers whose Highschool German has become rusty, this is well-worth the effort of finding it. Once you got the gist of the story in the dubbed version, listen to the sheer emotion in the original voices. Christiane F. is one of those rare movies that haunt you long after watching it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Movie is good - DVD is bare-bones
This is a gritty movie about one girl's experience in the Berlin underage prostitution/drug scene of the 70's. This is no glamorized Hollywood movie with mid-twenty year old actors as teens.

This is a depressing movie, although ultimately it has a good ending, at least for Christiane.

I read the 5-star book years and years ago, and after buying the DVD a few months back, I wanted to re-read the book as it has much more detail, and more cycles of getting clean and relapsing than shown in the movie. The book is out of print (natch!), but it is worth checking out used-book stores for it.

The DVD has no extras at all, and as noted by others, no subtitles - you get it in original German, or second-rate dubbed English. I watch it both ways - German for the emotion, English for understanding.

Still, highly recommended for a change from the Hollywood usual. Much David Bowie in the soundtrack. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best series on television ever!
This is definitely the series that started it all...American Gothic, X Files. They have nothing on David Lynch. These last few episodes are amazing, but you must see them all. Talk about bizarre. They had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode. I watched them all in a week!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Twin Peaks, but video quality is ATROCIOUS
I'm a big twin peaks fan, but the quality of these videos is absolutely horrible....episode 24 was totally unwatchable, it was mostly static, and the other tapes are also of similar quality. Unfortunately it seems that these poor quality videos are the only release of TP currently available, which is really too bad.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Big Dip in Quality
I hadn't seen "Twin Peaks" since the episodes first aired. While I enjoyed the earlier second season episodes much more the second time around, these particular episodes (especially 21-23) are still as bad as the first time I saw them.

One subplot, with James Hurley helping a hot blond woman fix her car, plays like a overwrought fifth season "Twilight Zone." Another embarrasing plot deals with Ben Horne and the Civil War. And Kenneth Welsh goes over the top playing Cooper's former partner, Windom Earle.

There are good parts even in these five episodes, including a wonderful performance by David Duchovny in episode 20 and continued strong acting from Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean and many others.

Episode 24 is vastly improved over the previous three and the plots become stronger as the season (and series) wound down, but I suspect the poor quality turned many viewers off. The writers didn't seem to be ready to fill the gap once Laura Palmer's murder was solved, and that probably doomed the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOWN....DOWN.....DOWN....
ENTER THE DEEP DARK WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH! DO NOT WATCH THE EPISODES BY THEMSELVES OR OUT OF SEQUENCE AS THIS CAN LEAD TO SEVERE CONFUSION AND HAND-WRINGING. WATCH THE PILOT FIRST (PREFERABLY THE NON-EUROPEAN ONE WITHOUT EXTRA CONFUSING SCENES), THEN EPS. 1-29, THEN THE FILM TWIN PEAKS:FIRE WALK WITH ME. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. 3-0 out of 5 stars pure curiosity kept this series alive
Twin Peaks was already losing steam long before the 20thepisode [but]I couldn't help but watch to see where Lynch would go with it. Lynch's murder mystery started off with a terrific bang that created so much interest you couldn't help but continue watching. The last episodes tend to be a bit over the top, but it is worth watching atleast once. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The videos are not what they seem
Remember those homemade tapes you had of the series when it aired originally? Unless your cable went on the fritz or you forgot to hit the record button after the commercial break, the copies were good enough to satisfy your cravings for cherry pie, a cup of joe and the whole wacky Twin Peaks gang. Hopefully you never lost them but if you did...Hurray! Because someone found your copies and dubbed them and over dubbed them and packaged them into this really poor quality set from some company called "Worldvision" A company who likes to re-sell garbage from your curb back to you. If you're desperate like me, don't have a DVD player, and are wary of e-bay, this unfortunately is your only alternative.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - Garbage Alert - Peakers Beware
Geez, $$$ for 5 episodes sounds like a bargain huh? Don't fall for it. I love Twin Peaks, but I was shocked to see how [bad] the quality is. I was dumb enough to buy the entire series in this 6 hour format, so it took a little while before I got to watch enough to see how horrible the quality is. I am surprised to see that they are still selling this. I am hopeful that the series will be available on DVD in the future and if it is I hope they do a decent job of digital remastering.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE FASCINATING WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH....
THE SERIES LOSES A LITTLE BIT AS IT TRIES TO FIND A NEW DIRECTION POST-LAURA PALMER. BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF GREAT MOMENTS AND DAVID DUCHOVNY (EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT AN X-FILES FAN) STEALS PRETTY MUCH EVERY SCENE HE IS IN. ALSO, THE SERIES TAKES ON AN INTERESTING QUALITY RIGHT ABOUT HERE -- MORE HUMOR AND LIGHT-HEARTED MOMENTS. BUT I COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THE FLIRTATION WITH SPACEMEN. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best series Ever!!!
What is there to say about the best series ever made. You'll laugh, hearing dale talk to diane and special guest appearances by David LYnch himself.

Also lots of other special guests like billy zane add a little variety to an already fabulous cast.

I recommend this to anyone, twin peaks is quite unusual.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A mind like a dimond-David Lynch
Every scene in this fantastic series is overflowing with unconventional humor, twisted fear, raging evil, and quircky characters. There has never been a better show on television. From Coopers passion for coffe, cherry pie, and Tibet, to a guest appearance in drag by David Duchovney, Twin Peaks offer nothing ordinary. There takes a certain personality to fully enjoy the humor of this show. I love each and every member of this show. Lynch was able to capture their simplicity along with their excentricities, and he opened them up to you as though they were people in your own town. The question isn't who killed Laura Palmer. If that is all you cared about, then you missed the purpose of the show. The brilliant mind of David Lynch gave the world a look into worlds within our world, and dared us to be scared. He dared us to be a little bit crazy. To this day, there is no one in the world who scares me more than BOB.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Dale's Journey Continues...
The "Twin Peaks" saga captivates with dark intensity tinged with left-field humor. Special Agent Dale Cooper is my favorite Maclachlan role, even as I discover this series ten years later. You can't stop now; this tape only makes you anxious to see the rest of what happens! Beyond who killed Laura Palmer...WHERE IS BOB? To be continued up through episode 29!!! It'll freak you out, in that bizarre twisted way only Lynch's "Twin Peaks" and Dale Cooper can!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Series is Great--The VHS Tapes Are Unwatchable!
BEWARE!! I know that it's going to be hard to wait for the rest of the episodes to be released to DVD (especially if you've already purchased and watched the first seven episodes on DVD), but trust me, wait for DVD. You'll end up saving yourself a lot of time and energy. The VHS tapes are in deplorable condition--the sound goes in and out, the screen is fuzzy and jumps, and it's difficult to make out what is going on. Don't try to struggle through it--just wait for it to come out on DVD and watch it in good condition. You'll be glad you did, especially when you come across the more "shocking" and exciting scenes in episodes 10-14.

5-0 out of 5 stars ENTER THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF TWIN PEAKS...
I JUST RECENTLY FINISHED VIEWING THIS SERIES FOR THE 4th TIME, AND IT HAS NOT LOST A STEP!!! JUST A BRILLIANT AND INSIGHTFUL STUDY OF THE DEEP MYSTERIES THAT THRIVE WITHIN US ALL. DUALITY IS PRESENTED AS ENTERTAINMENT BY DAVID LYNCH. FOR ALL OF YOU THAT ENJOY TWIN PEAKS AS MUCH AS I DO, YOU HAVE THE SOON-TO-BE-RELEASED DVDS (ALTHOUGH ARTISAN IS NON-COMMITTAL ABOUT THE SEASON 2 RELEASE)TO LOOK FORWARD TO. ALSO, A RECENT EUROPEAN INTERVIEW WITH LYNCH REVEALED HE MAY BE CONSIDERING A RETURN TO TWIN PEAKS SOON.....COOL!!! COMMENTS WELCOME...

3-0 out of 5 stars weird meets weirder
Twin Peaks is undoubtably a whodunnit masterpiece, with plot twists and intriguing characters at every turn. I enjoyed the originality and suspense of the first 5 episodes, however, by episode 6 the bizarre world that Lynch created was just too much to take. What was once intriguing becomes a redundant bore. By episode 9 you are more than ready for the series to be over with and the loose ends to be tied up. ...
