Kevin Costner might have had a hammerlock on baseball movies in the late 1980s with Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, but this 1987 HBO film with a few mid-level stars was (and still is) very good in its own way. William L. Petersen (Manhunter) is a player-manager for a 1950s minor-league team whose fortunes and hopes turn around during their battle for a championship. As with Bull Durham, this comedy has the feeling of taking place in a world larger than that of baseball, and thus provides useful perspective into why the game is so central in people's lives each spring. Another similarity is the farm-team milieu, a life of abridged hopes and stardom outside the Show--the thematic implication being that most of us have some kind of Show we can only admire from a distance. (Underscoring the point is a nice performance by Virginia Madsen as a small-town beauty queen.) But hope does come in Long Gone, and because of its sharp dialogue and enjoyable acting (by Dermot Mulroney, Larry Riley, Henry Gibson, Katy Boyer, and Teller) this film deserves to be included in anyone's collection of baseball features. --Tom Keogh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever? Tough call
My goodness, Bull Durham or Long Gone? Both have their moments...Bull Durham has better athletes that make the movie seem more realistic, but Long Gone isn't too shabby, except for a couple scenes where Dermot Mulroney can't quite pull it off. However, William Peterson does a great job, and the storyline is great. For true baseball movie fans that can spot poor baseball, this movie will not disappoint. I'm not ready to label it the best baseball movie of all time, but it is definitely in my top 3, and I am very discriminant. You cannot claim to be a TRUE baseball movie fan without watching this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Gone
I feel this is the best baseball movie I have ever watched and it is a shame that not too many folks have ever seen it. Stud Cantrell is one of my favorite characters and the setting is great. This film gets you itching to get back on the diamond even if you've never played before. Minor league ball is about growing into the game and cuting a youngsters teeth with the help of a seasoned coach/player. In that sense it has the same chacteristics as Bull Durham except it has a lot more feeling. Besides you can almost smell the dust in Weeks' uniform and the perfume that Madsen is wearing. Rent it if you can find it, but definately buy it before spring for someone who loves the game of baseball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Best Baseball Movie Ever
The first, of course, was The Natural, for pure 'love of the game' beauty and drama. But, hot diggedy DAWG, this is the best good time baseball movie ever! You can tell it was crafted with love and reverence by BASEBALL guys. The characters are loud and larger than life, while the Florida panhandle of the 50's swelters away, in all it's heavy, backroads charm. Petersen as Studs Cantrell is tour de force performance, Virginia Madsen glows with all the longin' of a small town girl just lookin' for a way out, and the rest of the cast is just as fabulous. The baseball sequences are first rate, alive with all the intrigue of the good ol' boy bush leagues of the time. And what do you mean, they couldn't play after being in a bar all afternoon? A guy named Babe Ruth made a career of it! We've been watching a grainy old VHS we taped the night it first aired on HBO, and can't wait for a DVD to finally be available.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE SUCKS!
This movie was the worst baseball movie i had ever seen. It had a very predictable plot line and not very good acting (except for william peterson). The ending is the most fake ever. There is no way two guys can play a baseball game after sitting in a bar for half a day!!!! So i would not recomend this movie at all. If you want a baseball movie similar to this, that is a lot better and more realistic, get Bull Durham.

5-0 out of 5 stars William Petersen
I couldn't believe that this was the same man you see on CSI where he's so low-key-soft-spoken & mellow-- in this he's rowdy-nasty- loud & obnoxious-curses-swears & drinks Jack Daniels- but what an exciting character!! looks great in tight jeans- this movie, shows his versatality as an actor- love him--he's delicious!!! ... Perhaps best known for its faux Springsteen soundtrack, the 1983 Eddie and the Cruisers is a rock lover's fantasy run wild. The story finds a reporter (Ellen Barkin) tracking down rumors of an unreleased album by a band whose charismatic leader (Michael Paré) allegedly died years before. As she approaches surviving members--who have since gone on to other things--she gets different points of view on Eddie's life and artistic drive, and the mystery about that album deepens. The trouble with the film is simple: it's impossible to accept. Michael Paré is far from suitable to play a Jersey shore rocker with thematic pretensions toward Rimbaud that go back to the '60s, and the soundtrack by John Cafferty sounds like a hack's rendition of E Street Band magic. An all-around embarrassment. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mark, from an era forgotten
I do think something is lacking here. The sequel is not available. Uh, would you by Star Wars and forget about the Empire Stricke Back, I think not. To the distributors, get II on the street, it will sell especially to those of us that not only like it, but also belive a set should be complete. Get the DVD to the fans.

Having read all the reviews I agree this is a great movie and I think some modern so-called musicians should take a hard look. Eddie was all about the music and the way it was created and played (even in the sequel). He wrote it and performed it as a real musician should. It had nothing to do with the show and everything to do with the quality and message the music was relaying. It may only be a movie, but it realys music of its time. Modern singers (most at least)--not musicians-- have lost sight of the meaning of musical creativity. Now it is all about putting on the show. I may be out of touch, hey I have seen STYX 5 times since they regrouped--they still get large crowds and still make music. Bands like that don't take their clothes off, don't have dance numbers, don't kiss on stage, don't have plastic surgery to attract a crowd, and don't hide behind someone elses skill. Bands like that write, create, and perform their own music. They don't hire bands and writers, they are the bands, they are the writers/creators of their own music. Maybe that is why we still listening to the Beatles and Led Zeplin and for the most part forgotten about performers like Britney and Christina. Once the get older and the appearance/persona has gone so have they.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of those nostaglic gems that captures the times
As the Cruisers walk into Tony Marts in Somers Point NJ and tell Tom Bereger to tell the manager, "The cruisers are here," I did a double take. From the age of 16, Tony Marts was my favorite hangout! (Yeah, the drinking age was 21, but I was a tall kid and no one asked for ID). So, you know I love this movie. I have probably watched this movie two dozen times and shown it to all of my friends and dates. To a person, they fell in love with in (and not surprisingly Eddie Lives the sequel, charming for its own music. Michael Pare captures the role and until one night that I watched the movie and then went out to see Beaver Brown (the real band) perform the same music, I was convinced he was singing and still don't get distracted by the lipsynching. Enjoy this wonderful movie, don't over analyze it and, well, if you spend your childhood on the South Jersey shore (Ocean City across from Somers Point) in the 1950s and 1960s as I did, it's real special.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great Movie!
I'm guessing that this was a B-Movie which grew into a cult film, and I'm glad that it did!

This movie really manages to pull you into a fantasy- where Eddie Wilson was 15 years ahead of his time...and nobody can find the missing tapes, of what WOULD have been his next album- had he lived.

A news woman interviews the remaining members of Eddie's old band, to try and shine some light on the mis-understood stories, the blurred memories and complex ideas.

To enjoy this film, you have to ignore the REAL history of rock n'roll and pretend that THIS is how it went. It was well paced, the acting was good and the music fits!

As for DVD extras...you don't get very much, but that doesn't ruin this classic movie, now does it?

ROCK ON, EDDIE!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Disagree with Amazon Review!
This film is a fantasy!! Pretend! And.. wonderful! Have seen it countless times and it always manages to evoke so many positive feelings, it's impossible to list. The "Editor's Review" says the story is impossible to accept- I disagree!! It's fun and I love it..again and again! No problem here!

Also have to put in my vote to those who are holding up the release of Eddie and the Cruiser's 2...what's in the way of this release? Work it out!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eddie and the Crusiers II Eddie Lives

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
My husband and I recently saw this movie on the Pax Channel and I really liked the movie even though I wish the ending would have been better (The wandering husband and wife getting back together, however over all I like the movie and all the actors did a great job. My husband that it was a bit too mushy for his tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars William Petersen and Sissy Spacek are great
William Petersen is a wandering husband who's wife (Spacek) has obtained a divorce without his knowledge. When his daughter sends him a wedding invitation, Petersen heads for home, thinking he can re-charm his ex into cancelling her wedding. It has some laughs and a tear jerker ending. Great movie I recommend to all.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Movie
Though this story plays out with awkward intelligence, it is a good
movie that won't drain you to watch. It's all about one family who sees Sissy Spacek's now ex-husband come back from being out of town for way longer than is acceptible. We learn early in the story that he has a pre teen daughter who adores him. And she has to suffer the same way his wife does because despite good intentions, he can't come back to reclaim what was once his.

5-0 out of 5 stars all women considering marriage should see this
More than just "pleasant," as the previous review suggests, this film with the sexy star of CSI William Petersen, reveals the mature choice women must make in weeding out suitors. Spacek's character must choose between the sexy but problematic ex and the cherishing beau.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleasant Romantic Comedy!!
A wandering ex-husband (William Peterson) is shocked when his former wife(Sissy Spacek) is gettting married from a wedding invitation sent by his daughter who tries to convince him to reconcile with his ex-wife before she gets married. This nicely done movie is a very pleasant romantic comedy well worth seeing!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hero At Large
Hero at large;
Excellent, fun movie; John Ritter and Ann Archer at their best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unrecognized Greatness!
If you have only seen John Ritter in "Three's Company" or "8 Simple Rules", you should see this film. One of his first film breakaway roles from Jack Tripper, his true talent is very visible in this picture. It is a sad task to write this review, being that Mr. Ritter is no longer with us. But his legacy of comedy, and drama, will be a memorial of the talent he had. If you want a feel good movie filled with a sense of hope, and an ultimate happy ending, this is the film for you, if you just love John Ritter this is the film for you. 5 stars my seem too much to some people, but for the comedy, charisma, and color it contains, this movie deserves it! Watch it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent memories from this film
This is a true "feel good" film. I remember watching it many times as a child. The message was moral and the story of "real guy turning hero" never dies out. The fact it is John Ritter in his prime just adds to the draw. In addition, Anne Archer puts in a strong and lovable performance as the love interest.

Don't miss this film. For kids though, the violence and mild language could be tough. I suggest 9 or older (if I remember the language issues correctly). Best to pre-screen before showing it to the children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hero at Heart!
Movie is saved because of the likability of John Ritter who was riding on his success on tv's THREE'S COMPANY back in the late 70's early 80's. He plays a struggling actor who puts on the costume of comic book superhero "Captain Avenger" for promotional appearances. On his way home from an engagement, he foils a robbery and the rest is predictable. However, it is not necessarily too bad of a story because there is a lot of heart and plausibility in the plot. Along with the mistaken identity plot (so prevalent in Ritter's THREE'S COMPANY scripts) there is a good love story and chemistry between Ritter's character and his neighbor, the beautiful Ann Archer. Overall, great New York City locations, decent script, and good characters sprinkle this romantic comedy gem.

4-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
This is a really good movie. John Ritter is charming, Anne Archer is sexy and the story is really heartwarming. I don't know how this movie did in theatres, but it deserves to be discovered all over again. I see it as an oft-overlooked film with a big heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse of a typical leather-clad friends in the '50s.
I have recently seen "The Lords of Flatbush" on an older VHS copy which started out in widescreen until the opening credits were done. I wish I would have seen this widescreen DVD here. It probably looks spanking good. Stanley (Sylvester Stallone) is at a crossroads with his steady girl who feels they should get married. Bike-riding Chico is at odds with the new girl in town, Jane. Henry "The Fonz" Winkler makes his pre-"Happy Days" appearance in this film. He is the man! His voice sounds kind of funny at times. In one shot it looked like his dialogue wasn't matching his mouth movement. Was his voice dubbed? The soundtrack consists of songs written for the film that sound like typical '50s songs.
If you like films of this genre like I do, go for it, dude!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Snooze
Just could not keep awake during this turkey. Sly Stallone and his buddies just mumble their way through this mess. I can't even call this a comming of age movie as none of these characters show any signs of maturity. Yes, Chico actually appears interested in one lady but there still seems to be no meaning in their relationship.

This is one BORING movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars lords of flatbush
lords of flatbush this was a real good movie I'm 15 I saw this movie about 2-3 years ago I kept rewinding it rewinding it.Slvester Stallons first movie he acted good in the movie it had some good fight sceans. You have to see it it's a good movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stallone is a Lord
"The Lords of Flatbush" stars a young Sylvester Stallone in his first big movie. The film takes place in the 1950's and centers around four friends. Each of them find a special lady in their lives and decide to make some commitments. The movie also features Henry Winkler who later went on to become 'Fonzie', duh! The film is almost powerful, but to watch it now, it seems dull at moments. Listen to the remarkable soundtrack to this movie and appreciate the too cool decade. Not! This is an earnest production that values friendship and Stallone's birth!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun film to watch!
This is the kind of film that is fun to watch alone or with friends. I enjoyed the music as well as watching young new actors make it big after this motion picture. I saw this film when it first came out and I enjoy watching it on video whenever I get the chance. To bad it's not on DVD yet. ... Read more

IF YOUR AS YOUNG AS I AM,(62) THIS MOVIE AND THE SONGS STILL LIVE IN YOUR HEART AND WILL FOREVER. ALMOST EVERY SONG AND PIECE OF MUSIC TOLD OF OUR FEELINGS FOR AND OF THE LOVE OF OUR LIVES. LOOKING FOR AN ECHO IS OUR TIMES IN THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES. GREAT GREAT MOVIE. I'LL BUY IT ON DVD BUT I WOULD RATHER HAVE IT ON VHS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whadda Good Movie!
I am a self-proclaimed doo-wop junkie, that finally saw a movie to do this music proud! I recently had the pleasure of seeing Kenny Vance and the Plantotones perform, which moved me to purchase the CD and the DVD! A fine cast, and heart-felt story combines with the music to make "Echo" a movie you can watch more than once. This is a real "sleeper", that needs to wake up more viewers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not often, a reel feel-good movie!
One wonders if the cast & crew of this wonderful flick thought they would/could succeed with: no guns, no blood, no explosions, no murders...beheadings, stabbings, etc.

If you love music, and have heard some fifties music, the kind that you just have to involuntarily sway and bob to....then this is your movie. It's wonderful, with a storyline and characters completely full bodied. And the music! Armand Assante playing against his usual form. And Diane Venora, a character so charasmatic, Assante isn't the only one that falls for her. We do, assisted by the best music score in a film since the Commitments! I love this movie! Makes me smile...."FEEL GOOD!".

5-0 out of 5 stars Look No Further!
This is absolutely the best movie wrapped around fifties & sixties music that I have ever seen. The music of Kenny Vance is superbly woven throughout a very heartwarming story that makes you want to cry and cheer at the same time. This is the music WCBS-FM SHOULD still be playing! The locations in Brooklyn and Howard Beach are just great and add to the overall flavor of the movie. Don't hestitate, just buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars great flick
I saw this movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have also read the book which I could not put down. Even though the movie did not follow the book as closely as it could have it was still worth watching just to see hottie Eric Schweig!! This movie (and book) are even more impacting if you have been to the New River Gorge and have seen what she traveled through. I highly recommend that everyone see this enchanting true story of Mary Ingles' plight as she returned home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Renee O'Connor is in it...what more do you need?
Although it does stir up memories of being forced to watch Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman & flicks like The Last of the Mochicans, this true story turned out to be just a good old fashion tale of survival and ultimate triumpth. I purchased this movie solely to see my favorite actress Renee O'Connor ("Gabrielle" from the TV show Xena: Warrior Princess) play the wounded shaky sister of pregnant, focused and utterly BRAVE Mary Ingles, both women victims of an new America Indian raid, forced to travel some 800 miles uphill with their devoted male counterparts searching for them not far behind. Eric Schweig plays a toned & interesting Indian who pursues and admires the strong minded Mary Ingles; Renee O'Connor shines as her younger and not so certain sister, Betty, who, in my opinion, totally MAKES this movie by bringing her usual unsurpassed charmisa and emotional charm to tie in any loose ends.

My only complaints: the 800 mile travel was sort of uneventful and slow and some of the survival tactics they used were like "yeah right..."

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it less than 1 star, I would
I can't believe most of the reviews here!!! A good movie??? Please, read the novel by James A. Thom!!! This made for TV movie is nothing but a soap opera set in the 18th century!!!

In 1985, when I was 14 years old, my mother came into my room and handed me a paperback book called FOLLOW THE RIVER. "This is the most INSPIRING story I've read in a long long time." I, not being much of a reader at that age, took this book, and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!!

It is, to this day, my all time favorite novel. That they made this little TV movie based on this wonderful work was bad enough. They should have made an epic feature film about the unforgettable protag and her true story. But to make a TV movie that squishes 5 months in a woman's life into 2 commercial ridden hours, and sanitizes the facts too??? Foul!!!

Mary Draper Ingles was a young mother of three. Her third baby was actually due to be born any day. On July 8, 1755, Shawnee Native Americans raided her settlement in Virginia, killed many of her neighbors, and even killed her mother. Then they abducted her, her two little boys, her sister in law Bettie, and a neighbor named Lenard, and took them from Virginia, up into W. Virginia thru the New River Gorge, on to the mighty Ohio River, and into Southern Ohio (present site of Portsmouth). Mrs. Ingles' life is scattered, devastated and all but destroyed. Eventually, in a few weeks as a captive, she loses her family. Her sons are adopted and taken to still another faraway Shawnee settlement. Bettie is given as a wife to a Shawnee man, and Mary herself is sold to French traders, along with a new friend, Ghetel, an elderly Dutch widow. Her life further ruined and disrupted, she makes a fateful decision: either return home to Virginia and to her husband William, or life is not worth living. Will is all she has left to remind her of who she truly is. She must return to him.

The movie devotes a mere 20 mins. to Mary's 1000 mile walk home. The book is so much more fun to experience, so rich in detail, and author James A. Thom constantly lets you inside Mary's head to know her thoughts, fears, regrets. She decides she must abandon the baby girl she had en route to her slavery. A Shawnee woman has pretty much taken over the baby anyway.

In September 1755, Mary and the elderly Dutch woman Ghetel escape while on a salt making assignment at the Big Bone Lick in western Kentucky, even father from home than the town in Southern Ohio, and from western Kentucky, through Southern Ohio, through W. Va and the formidable New River Gorge, formed through the centuries into tall, dark, rocky palisades that Mary, who has been weakened, starved and fatigued by her travels already, is forced to CLIMB in order to reach her husband. On top of this, it is already wintertime.

None of these wonderous facts are in the movie. Instead, we are given a completely fictitious segment at the end. It just seems all watered-down, sanitized, politically correct. The ending of the movie is NOTHING AT ALL like the one in the book. Mary's two sons were taken from her. Her younger boy died right after he was taken from his mother. Thirteen years passed before Mary laid eyes on the older son again. The baby daughter was NOT BROUGHT BACK TO MARY BY CAPT. WILDCAT. The baby daughter was adopted by a Shawnee woman and never seen by her natural mother again. The ending of the TV movie was like a politically correct fairy tale.

Because of the depression, the emotional toll the events took on Mary Ingles' life, her hair turned prematurely white at the age of 23. But thankfully, she did return to her husband William, she did recover from her malnutrition, and she had four more children. In 1768, she and her oldest son, Thomas, who was 5 when she saw him last, were reunited after he was ransomed. Bettie Draper, who was given to be the wife/concubine of a Shawnee man, was also ransomed, but died at the young age of 42, doubtlessly having never fully recovered from her ordeal.

Fact: Life isn't fair. Bad things happen to good people. Things don't always end up well and fine. The history of this country is not a fairy tale.

If you're afraid to tell the truth in a movie because everyone will start in on being PC, don't make the movie!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An American Hero
If this movie generates any interest you should read the book. The story (based on fact) is one of the very best historical novels I've ever been exposed to ... a real life depiction of the frontier and the challenges and experiences of an incredibly courageous and tenacious and determined woman.

This is very very special!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Mary Ingals, her kids, and sister gets nabbed by the Shawnee. Eventually she finds her way out of the village and embarks on a long wilderness journey back home.

I've got some problems with this movie. It basically treats the Indians as brutish savages, complete with a broken-hearted Shawnee Indian brave who swipes Mary's kids in a fit of jealous rage. I was almost expecting the producers to wheel out a piece of Samsonite luggage for him to swing around and smash. Not to say that the Brave isn't attractive and interesting to Mary. She's attracted to him, but only in the HOT HOT HOT outdoorsy style sex kind of way.

Mary is attracted to the Brave and entertains thoughts of steamy love with him. She snaps out of his spell when the Brave suggests marriage To her credit, he was coming on too strong, I don't know of many women who would marry a guy on the first date. This is 17th century Virginia and not Reno or Las Vegas.

It's no big surprise when she chooses to stay faithful to her hubby. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, her simpish husband is out looking for her with some dude in a powdered wig. This Indian guy is actually wanting to adopt her kids, at the same time Hubby is wandering around in the woods with some guy in a wig. The choice should be obvious sister.

Instead she doesn't listen to reason and rebukes the Brave's offer of marriage, he gets steamed (suitcase smashing ensues) and he sells her to a tubby Frenchman with really greasy hair. Disgusted by the prospect of having sex with Frenchy McSweatsausage she decides to make her way back to her husband.

Blah, blah, blah. I won't spoil the ending of this one, let's just say it seemed a little...strange. ... Read more

This film is about a female student at Randolph University in Alabama in the early 60's who is a writer for the school newspaper. She gets caught up in the civil rights movement and gets into trouble for writing in the newspaper articles favorable to the civil rights movement. It could have been a decent movie, but I found the acting and the dialogue so superficial and uninvolving and unconvincing.
