5-0 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL--MINUS 20
I've been hearing for years about "Twin Peaks", whether by word of mouth or on the internet. It's popular to mention the numerous pop-culture moments this show created and the fact that so many shows try to imitate, and fail, this landmark show. So after reading recaps of the pilot and first couple episodes, I decided to buy the whole thing.

I took a risk and I'd do it again because this show is one of the greatest achievements of all TV time. The pilot is a perfect intro to the show, establishing the characters and plots, the main one and various subplots, that it's addictive. WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER!? The mix of light and dark, quirky humor, heavy drama, fantastic production values, and so much more! If you haven't seen any of the show, stay clear of the last 15-20 minutes. I heard about the special ending and found out that the original pilot ends at Sarah Palmer's scream after her dream. End it there, watch the rest of the series, then go back and watch the ending.

Other than that, sit back, relax, and ENJOY! And believe me, YOU WILL!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best 2 Hours of Film Anywhere!
Twin Peaks is the premier for the greatest TV series ever created. Brought in to investigate the murder of Twin Peaks Homecoming Queen Laura Palmer, Agent Dale Cooper "Kyle MacLachlan" becomes wrapped up in a town full of mystery, murder, damn good coffee and killer cherry pie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Start here.
This is pretty much what any fan of the show or David Lynch needs to start with. It's the original movie/pilot, and is a great piece of work. The story, the characters, and the whole northwest environment really make for an interesting and sometimes creepy watch. Many cool actors showed up in "Twin Peaks", among them Kyle McLachlan, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Sheryl Lee, Jack Nance, and the sexy Sherilyn Fenn. If you enjoy this, seek out the VHS collectors series, episodes 1-7. Or the DVD first season, which is also episodes 1-7, minus this pilot.

So I'm sitting on this chair, in this house, on mars when this movie comes on. TWIN PEAKS. The first thing I saw was this grotesque factory-mill type place. And then there was this close-up shot of some rusty machine, and it moved...it moved with the music. Sparks were shooting out everywhere, and it was all moving to this other-worldly melody. Then waterfalls, ponds, ducks...in less than one minute, Lynch had sucked me in, shattered me, put me back together (the way he saw fit), and then he dropped me off into TWIN PEAKS.
The whole thing was beatiful. Lynch and Frost had created this soft cloud of a world that was filled shards of glass and rusty nails. It was all like a dream -a dream that you don't want to wake up from. Bobby, Donna, Shelly, Big Ed. I was lost.
"I too have been touched by the devilish one. Ahh, but when I saw the face of God..." This sleek-Norman Rockwell-wrong way on a one way street-imitation silk-nightmare is a mountain top work of art that leads you dead on into the midst of the footstool of the heavens.
-be sure to watch it in the full blossom of the evening, and you just might experience the beatific vision...FIRE WALK WITH ME.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of TV's best pilots!
If only it were on DVD! This tape contains the classic 2 hour pilot for David Lynch's extraordinary and quirky TV cult favorite, "Twin Peaks". This 2 hour intro is NOT part of the six tape "complete" series collection that has the actual 29 episodes. There is a neat, confusing, untelevised 15 minute ending that was used to "wrap up" the whole murder when this same tape was released in Europe as a made-for-TV movie. Still, it is simply Twin Peaks at its best. ... Read more

For a couple of hours in 1990, David Lynch took over the network airwaves and subtly, subversively transformed American television forever. Amazingly, the TV series that followed this rich and strange feature-length pilot became an international phenomenon as people all over the world became obsessed by one question: Who killed Laura Palmer? Twin Peaks is the apotheosis of all things Lynch, and arguably his single greatest achievement. Set in the dark, damp, woodsy atmosphere of a small mountain town in the Pacific Northwest, Twin Peaks is a murder mystery, detective saga, soap opera, sitcom--the essence of television distilled into one mind-blowing serial. Lynch subverts TV conventions right and left, not the least by concentrating on the grief of Laura's friends and family, and orchestrating their tears into a symphony of mourning. Twin Peaks is about the endlessly seductive idea of "mystery," of the ways human beings find to deal with the unknown. It was never about solutions; after all, answers (which are invariably anticlimactic) only kill the Mystery! So, although it took another year or so before Lynch and his partner Mark Frost were eventually forced (by the network and public opinion) to reveal the identity of Laura Palmer's murderer, the tantalizing clues are the real heart of the enterprise, and they're all right here in the debut. And so are some excerpts from Agent Cooper's surrealistic dream sequence (which appeared in the third episode of the series), featuring the dancing, backward-talking little "Man from Another Place," as part of a special European-release finale (you wouldn't want to use the word "conclusion") for this video version. --Jim Emerson ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it better 12 years ago.
This movie was awesome when I first saw it, but I was 13. I recently bought this movie for my younger brother because he's into the skating thing and there aren't many movies like this being made. As I was watching I noticed the acting to be very mediocre but the plot was pretty solid.

The best thing about this movie is the skateboarding celebrities doing a little acting. Tony Hawk being one of them. There's a lot of "old school" skate tricks going on and just looking at the huge boards they used shows how much stuff has evolved.

Overall I think this will appeal to the younger teen audience. If you're interested in that genre though, this is a must have classic.

this movie is a must for any old school and new school skater its one of the best movies to add to your collection of movies it features the talents of natas kaupus, tony hawk, rodney mullen the best skater in the world, mike vallely, and more.its got some of the greatest freestyle stunts by rodney mullen, plus christain slater does a good job convicing you he's a true skater besides the flaws of christain pushing off and the plot its pure genious a priceless classic for all to view and (enjoi)enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairie Tale Theater rocks, especially Cinderella!
I love Fairy tales. The first time I saw this movie (and thisone Cinderella especially) I was enchanted and I loved it from thenon. Jean Stapleton gives this movie humor, Jennifer Beals gives it enchantment, and Matthew Broderick gives it a taste of what is still a celebrity in the late 90's! This movie ROCKS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: Cinderella
One of the most romantic episodes in the excellent Faerie Tale Theatre series, this one is the classic rags-to-riches story of Cinderella. Jennifer Beals beautifully portrays the role of Cinderella, and Matthew Broderick makes a delightfully witty Prince Henry. The appearances of Jean Stapleton as the fairy godmother and Eve Arden as the wicked stepmother are superb. The costumes, sets and music are truly divine in this wonderful faerie tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happily Ever After start HERE!
What happens when you have Jennifer Beals playing Cinderella and Jean Stapleton as the fairy godmother? MAGIC!!! This is a wonderful film in the Faerie Tale Theatre series. Each actor/actress gives very memorable performances from Matthew Broderick playing the prince who is looking for love to Eve Arden who plays the unfair dictating stepmother. A perfect family film. A movie that no family or fan of fantasy should be without!

4-0 out of 5 stars Buried somewhere in here...
Buried somewhere in PAST TENSE is a rather sharp and brilliant movie. Half MULHOLLAND DRIVE, halfy kitschy detective story, PAST TENSE has potential underground hit written all over it. The standout here is the always talented Lara Flynn Boyle (who is underrated and underused in an industry that could use a lot more talented actresses.) Here her acting skills lead an impressive ambiguity to the character "Tory Bass" (a mixture of the innocent and the earthy in typical film noir nature.)

Unlike MULHOLLAND DRIVE, PAST TENSE has a fairly universal plot to follow once things unravel: boy meets girl, boy loses girl to murder, boy gets girl back (or does he?). What makes PAST TENSE confusing (or brilliant, depending on how you approach the film) is the constant replaying or reimagining of one or two scenes (interspersed with new events or images and the rest of the "plot.")

You'll see, for instance, "Tori" slice a lemon while her cop neighbor (played by Scott Glenn) attempts to make a move on her;then a few frames later, the same scene. The neat factor comes in how "Tori" is dressed differently or how she behaves in the scenes that are repeated. One version of her first meeting with the cop neighbor has her sultry and seductive, another has her innocent and scared. (To explain why this occurs would be to give away a major spoiler...which I won't do...)

What is real and what isn't? Why do people vanish and reappear or take on new names? The MULHOLLANDesque elements of PAST TENSE are what make this film a keeper and a "repeat viewing" video. At least two elements (the discovery of a photo of "Tory" using a different name plus camera shots of a dead or slumbering woman in bed) of PAST TENSE are eerily similar to David Lynch's 2001 film.

The actual screenplay and the horribly annoying "writing" Scott Glenn's character types on his computer monitor (in his attempts to quit his day job and be a hack novelist)are all that hold this eerie and unforgettable movie back. Otherwise, you would get a beautifully shot (if somewhat stilted and naive) love story.

(Of course in the end, nothing offers the twists and turns that makes up the wonderful trip MULHOLLAND DRIVE.)

5-0 out of 5 stars The troubled life of Frances Farmer. Bravo to Jessica Lange
This is the story of Frances Farmer told from age 16 to 44. She became an actress but had such a troubled life and a troubled mind. Perhaps it began with her mother's insistance, or an undercover reporter, and the loss of her job from a touring play company. But what ever it was that was the constant pecking, it finally made her snap. You know the phrase, "the last straw that broke the camel's back". She ended up unwillingly in a mental institution. But still that's not all to this story. This film is raw, mature, shocking and brilliantly and masterfully dramatized by Jessica Lange who plays Frances Farmer. This film, at times, is disturbing to watch. But it was real and it did happen. I think, in my opinion, Frances Farmer's problem was not Hollywood, but her mother and being in the institution three times made Frances 200% worse. Some people can be so cruel towards another human. And never back off or make a block and totally destory the destiny of that one's life. What could have been is shattered because of that one evil person. The natural timeline has been cut. Farmer's last film was Son Of Fury (1942) until 1958. Frances Farmer had a labotomy and after a 16-year absence, returned in 1958 to do one more film, The Party Crashers (1958) which would be her last film. This DVD version has a chapter selection. No extras, no bonuses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jessica Lange gives a harrowing performance
This 1982 biographical film about the life of tragic 30's movie star Frances Farmer showcases brilliant Oscar nominated performances by Jessica Lange and Kim Stanley. It details Farmer's rise to stardom and her destruction by the one person on earth who is supposed to love and nurture, her mother. Uneven script is overshadowed by truly great acting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinaria película

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Character Portrayal
Jessica Lange does not capture the personality of Frances Farmer well at all: when not hysterical, Lange portrays Farmer as somewhat simpering, rather than the bold, brassy figure that Farmer actually was; but I don't entirely blame Lange for this huge character portrayal gaffe: When viewing the extra material on the DVD, it soon become QUITE clear that the makers of this movie were more interested in themselves than their actual subject matter: The extra material included is nothing but a bunch of mutual back-slapping among a few Hollywood yuppies, and the references to Farmer are very much extraneous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jessica Lange simply brilliant as Frances
I originally saw this as a teenager and even then, thought that Jessica Lange was brilliant. Just the other night I had the pleasure of seeing this film again, and once again felt that Jessica Lange was marvellous in her role as Frances Farmer. The film is also very well paced and engaging.

If you think back to 1982, it was a huge year for Hollywood. So many powerful films came out and it was definitely a year for the actresses. Jessica Lange was up against Meryl Streep in "Sophie's Choice". The Academy gave the best actress to Meryl Streep, but you cannot argue that Jessical Lange was equally as good in "Frances". She won the best supporting actress that year instead for her role in Tootsie.

Frances is a film quite unknown to many, and that surprises me, because it is a gem of a film. I realise that there has been many debates over the facts, but it does say at the beginning of the film "based on a true story".

Jessica Lange is one of the greatest actresses of our time. Other Jessica films I recommend are: The Music Box, Cape Fear, Tootsie and Blue Sky. ... Read more

The Shivers is the greatest Faerie tale in the whole theatre.I grew up on these videos. I have been searching for a few years now to purchase these videos.I can't wait for them to become available. I would love to own the whole collection. These classic tales should be available for all children to see and enjoy.I must say The Faerie Tale theatre collection is the greatest among faerie tale production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utterly Enjoyable!
The Fairy Tale Theatre Series is wonderful. I watched them as a child, and still enjoy watching them. This one especially. It makes you laugh and at the same time has enough scare to it to make a child feel that they just watched their first horror movie. In actuality there there is nothing horrible about it. A perfect family entertainment movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a classic!
Faery Tale Theatre movies are masterpieces! They follow the tales they tell fairly faithfully as they were originally written. I only hope they will soon be re-released as my children are now asking for copies, and I don't want to give mine up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Faerie Tale Theatre Ever!
I would have to agree with the previous review that this is the best episode of Faerie Tale Theatre. In adapting faerie tales for film or television, the biggest difficulty seems to be in capturing that sense of awe and wonder that the original stories invoke. Without picture illustrations and a child's imagination to fill in the blanks, the original stories often appear static and lifeless on the screen. At worst, the sublime becomes downright ridiculous. Faerie Tale Theatre is a great and entertaining show, but rarely has it captured that sense of magic. This episode is one time that is has, and the results are truly something to behold. Eric Idle is the only "name" here, but the rest of the cast is equally perfect in their roles. Nicholas Meyer creates an entire other world, utilizing medieval tones in setting and costumes, as well as an eerie score of pipes from composer James Horner. The effect is mesmerizing, and if the use of rhyme as dialogue takes some getting used to, it only adds to the haunting impact in the end. This episode may be too disturbing for the youngest children, but all lovers of faerie tales owe it to themselves to see this. It doesn't have the budget of big-screen fantasies, but I rank this right up there with the NeverEnding Story and the Dark Crystal. If you love those films, then you understand what I mean about the sublime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and surreal...as fairy tales should be.
In the early to mid eighties, Shelly Duvall produced a cable show for the then flagship HBO network called Faerie Tale Theatre. The intent was to bring classic childhood stories to an audience of young and old alike through big name stars, directors, and hip, irreverent writing. Without this series, there would not have been a "Princess Bride". Although many of these were excellent examples of the best television could offer, the finest hour (for me) was director Nicholas Meyer's interpretation of Robert Browning's "Pied Piper of Hamelin". Both faithful to the original poem and liberal in its creative embellishments, Meyer perfectly captured the eerieness of the story. The show starred Eric Idle and he makes a perfect Piper. Tall, pale, with piercing eyes and a hawklike nose, Idle looke every bit the character: part mystic, part mercenary. And his final march out of Hamelin with the children is truly the stuff of innocent nightmares. Without sentimentality, without any concession to cuteness, this episode proved that within all great children's stories lurked something magical and sinister...Just like adulthood. ... Read more

This image of the Red Room, this world of Twin peaks is horrifying!! I must admit I cried for hours after the ending of this show. I was extremely depressed, I still get depressed about and the first time I watched it was in January 2000. I really love this tape. I love TWIN PEAKS. It needs more to it. I want Lynch to direct another TWIN PEAKS movie!! I want MORE!!! PEAKS IN MY MIND HASN'T DIED. FRANKLY, I see Peaks still around, in a spooky world!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not finished...
These final episodes are perfectly showcase all that made Twin Peaks an excellent show. They have every bit of the symbolism, surrealism, and humor that gave it it's fan base.

Unfortunatly it's very obvious that the last episode was intended to be a cliff-hanger and that they expected to make more. Be warned that while it is very interesting, many questions are left un-ansered(and never will be), many new questions are asked, and the audience never knows what the fate of several of the characters is.

Of course, if you are reading this I assume you have seen the other episodes already and you're probably going to see these regardless of what I say. Enjoy...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Finish to the Series
These are the final five episodes of the "Twin Peaks" series; they are somewhat of a redemption after some weak episodes immediately preceeding these. The plots are much stronger, especially those focusing on Agent Cooper. His attraction to Annie Blackburn is nicely played (with a strong romantic piece by Angelo Badalamenti). The Windom Earle plot becomes intriguing as it becomes bigger than Earle (who is overplayed by Kenneth Welsh) and delves into the supernatural (and, as mentioned in another review, becomes an inspiration for the X-Files).

The other plotlines are also strong. Especially intriguing is the Andrew Packard character, as he (along with Catherine and Pete) deals with the mysterious black box. Dan O'Herlihy has a great stage presence as Packard; I wish he could have been featured more in the series.

The build up to Episode 29 is nicely done -- Lynch's direction of the final episode has that first season feel to it (though a little darker). It would have been a great season-ending cliffhanger (I would have been interested to see if Major Briggs went to the rescue at the Black Lodge), but remains an odd end to the series.

For these espisodes, the only major complaint is that they deserve to be on DVD. For the future, I would love to see some sort of continuation of the story nearly ten years later. It would be fun to have a Lynch/Frost/Chris Carter collaboration on a movie combining "Twin Peaks" with the "X-Files." It probably won't happen, but this series deserves more.

5-0 out of 5 stars AH, THE SUBTLE WONDERS OF THE RED ROOM....
WOULDN'T IT BE WEIRD IF THIS WAS REALLY THE WAY IT ALL ENDED? WITH NO SENSE OF CLOSURE, OR POSSIBILITY OF REDEMPTION. JUST CONFUSING, TWISTED, DISHEARTENING, AND ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! COMMENTS WELCOME AT nick82e@hotmail.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you like the X-files, watch these last episodes
When they first aired Twin Peaks I; like many other people, didn't really understand and was very confused by the last section of episodes, but since then we've been treated to shows like the X-files and Dark Skies, and it's now alot easier to understand references to "Project Bluebook" and other UFO and paranormal-related stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best series on television ever!
This is definitely the series that started it all...American Gothic, X Files. They have nothing on David Lynch. These last few episodes are amazing, but you must see them all. Talk about bizarre. They had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode. I watched them all in a week!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Twin Peaks, but video quality is ATROCIOUS
I'm a big twin peaks fan, but the quality of these videos is absolutely horrible....episode 24 was totally unwatchable, it was mostly static, and the other tapes are also of similar quality. Unfortunately it seems that these poor quality videos are the only release of TP currently available, which is really too bad.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Big Dip in Quality
I hadn't seen "Twin Peaks" since the episodes first aired. While I enjoyed the earlier second season episodes much more the second time around, these particular episodes (especially 21-23) are still as bad as the first time I saw them.

One subplot, with James Hurley helping a hot blond woman fix her car, plays like a overwrought fifth season "Twilight Zone." Another embarrasing plot deals with Ben Horne and the Civil War. And Kenneth Welsh goes over the top playing Cooper's former partner, Windom Earle.

There are good parts even in these five episodes, including a wonderful performance by David Duchovny in episode 20 and continued strong acting from Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean and many others.

Episode 24 is vastly improved over the previous three and the plots become stronger as the season (and series) wound down, but I suspect the poor quality turned many viewers off. The writers didn't seem to be ready to fill the gap once Laura Palmer's murder was solved, and that probably doomed the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOWN....DOWN.....DOWN....
ENTER THE DEEP DARK WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH! DO NOT WATCH THE EPISODES BY THEMSELVES OR OUT OF SEQUENCE AS THIS CAN LEAD TO SEVERE CONFUSION AND HAND-WRINGING. WATCH THE PILOT FIRST (PREFERABLY THE NON-EUROPEAN ONE WITHOUT EXTRA CONFUSING SCENES), THEN EPS. 1-29, THEN THE FILM TWIN PEAKS:FIRE WALK WITH ME. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. 3-0 out of 5 stars pure curiosity kept this series alive
Twin Peaks was already losing steam long before the 20thepisode [but]I couldn't help but watch to see where Lynch would go with it. Lynch's murder mystery started off with a terrific bang that created so much interest you couldn't help but continue watching. The last episodes tend to be a bit over the top, but it is worth watching atleast once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my personal fairy tale theatre movie
If your looking for a fairy tale for kids that can make even you laugh this is the one. Robin Williams will lighten the mood every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad for Children
This film contains language and sexual content. Robin Williams uses profanity and parental discretion is advised. It is a funny telling of the story for adults but not younger viewers... Parents should watch the movie first to decide if it is appropiate for their children, and trust me, it isn't!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Undoubtably one of the best Faerie Tale Theatre videos.
This episode of The Tale of the Frog Prince, starring the hilarious Robin Williams and wonderful Teri Garr, is not only a very well told classic children's tale, but a comedy. It has plenty of bits an adult would find entertaining, none being underhand or crude, while still amusing to a younger audience. I grew up watching this series; I loved it then, and I still love it now ... A very good movie to see, and a deal if you can buy it anywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, but for adults
This is a hilariously funny version of a children`s fairy tale. Both Robin Williams and Teri Garr do a superb job in their portrayals of the frog-prince and the princess, but you will, most likely, be surprised at how well Rene Aberjonois (Clayton, fron the t.v. series Benson) does comedy. The only caveat is that because of the language and some the situations I would not recommend this video for pre-teens, but anyone else will definitely be amused! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The videos are not what they seem
Remember those homemade tapes you had of the series when it aired originally? Unless your cable went on the fritz or you forgot to hit the record button after the commercial break, the copies were good enough to satisfy your cravings for cherry pie, a cup of joe and the whole wacky Twin Peaks gang. Hopefully you never lost them but if you did...Hurray! Because someone found your copies and dubbed them and over dubbed them and packaged them into this really poor quality set from some company called "Worldvision" A company who likes to re-sell garbage from your curb back to you. If you're desperate like me, don't have a DVD player, and are wary of e-bay, this unfortunately is your only alternative.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - Garbage Alert - Peakers Beware
Geez, $$$ for 5 episodes sounds like a bargain huh? Don't fall for it. I love Twin Peaks, but I was shocked to see how [bad] the quality is. I was dumb enough to buy the entire series in this 6 hour format, so it took a little while before I got to watch enough to see how horrible the quality is. I am surprised to see that they are still selling this. I am hopeful that the series will be available on DVD in the future and if it is I hope they do a decent job of digital remastering.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE FASCINATING WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH....
THE SERIES LOSES A LITTLE BIT AS IT TRIES TO FIND A NEW DIRECTION POST-LAURA PALMER. BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF GREAT MOMENTS AND DAVID DUCHOVNY (EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT AN X-FILES FAN) STEALS PRETTY MUCH EVERY SCENE HE IS IN. ALSO, THE SERIES TAKES ON AN INTERESTING QUALITY RIGHT ABOUT HERE -- MORE HUMOR AND LIGHT-HEARTED MOMENTS. BUT I COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THE FLIRTATION WITH SPACEMEN. 5-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: The Three Little Pigs
Hilarious episode from the Faerie Tale Theatre series with an all-star cast. Billy Crystal as well as his on-screen brother actors are excellent as the three pigs, and Jeff Goldblum is show-stealing as the Big Bad Wolf. Valerie Perrine is a knock-out and makes a surprisingly sexy pig in this faerie tale. A great comedic hit for the entire family to enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this series!
My brother, sisters and I grew up watching the Faerie Tale Theatre collection, and loving them all. By the way, they're not just for kids! My mother loved them so much she went out of her way to find them for my little niece to enjoy. I highly recommend them to anyone with (or even without) children to view them!

4-0 out of 5 stars cute and appealing
Billy Crystal, Valerie Perrine, Doris Roberts and Jeff Goldblum star in the new telling of the tale from FAERIE TALE THEATRE.

One of the more light-hearted entries in the series, its a delightfully comic piece, played out by master comedians Crystal and Roberts, with the beautiful Perrine cutting a mean figure as a porker indeed.

The series was a huge success, boasting a huge multi award-winning cast (Tonys, Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes, etc), and creator/producer Shelly Duvall has earned laurels for one of the finest family series in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Fairie Tale Theatres
I must have rented this video 40-50 times for my then pre-school age son and daughter. We all had the lines memorized. Billy Crystal is terrific as one of the pigs (Peter, Paul and Larry) and Jeff Goldblum is a howl as the wolf. The whole cast is great. This is truly a film that everyone in the family will love. The best.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Unforgettable as Nat
This was a household staple rented over and over from our local video store, played over and over for all ages whenever our guests seemed willing.

Other Jessica films I recommend are: The Music Box, Cape Fear, Tootsie and Blue Sky. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Enough of Washington Irving's Magic Resonates
RIP VAN WINKLE is the kind of pseudo-fairy tale that can mean nearly anything that the reader wants. In the hands of director Francis Ford Coppola, RVW is a surprisingly entertaining version of the Washington Irving novel that was resurrected by the Fairie Tale Theater. A previous reviewer castigated Coppola for what he termed the cheapness of the sets. Yet, as I watched the film for myself (no children involved), I was carried along by what I saw as a deliberately surreal style that successfully mimicked the much more somber tone of the text. Rip (Harry Dean Stanton)is presented as a henpecked husband of wife Vilma (Talia Shire), a woman whose cacophanous shrewishness more clearly suggests Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West than the shrill yelping of say Hillary Clinton. In such a non-threatening world, Vilma's harsh voice and equally harsh hairdo do little more than serve as plot devices to propel Rip into the haunted mountains of the Catskills, where the tale's true power resides. Rip leaves the outer level surreal world of his village to enter the inner level surreality of the Magic Mountain of Commander Heinrich. There he sees the magical ghosts whose own deaths 150 years ago prefigure his own looming sleep death of twenty years. Rip's return is a balancing of his own confusion of his long sleep with an equally confusing long sleep of the burgeoning united colonies. The silliness of the mayor (Tim Conway) suggests the subtext that the changes in Rip's village--astounding as they must seem to the bewildered Rip--are only the precursor to further changes that involve granting rights to women and people of color. When Rip finally accepts the reality of his new life, so does the viewer accept the notion that even the seeming reality of momentous changes must be viewed against future and even more momentous ones. RIP VAN WINKLE succeeds in resonating this message as well as far more "serious" films.

4-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: Rip Van Winkle
Atmospheric and delightful version of the Washington Irving classic from Faerie Tale Theatre. Francis Ford Coppola creates a spellbinding film with Harry Dean Stanton turning in a great performance as the man who liked to sleep alot! Talia Shire is wickedly funny as Rip's wife, Wilma. Alot of people probably think the same thing as I do, that the sets are a little too fake such as the sheet used for water when the goblins talk about their misfortunate shipwreck. Overall however, it's another excellent episode.

2-0 out of 5 stars Francis Ford Coppola seems to be directing in his sleep....
First of all, let me state that Faerie Tale Theatre is one of the best children's series ever made. It walks the fine line of being entertaining for both children and adults without pandering to either. However, this is by far the weakest entry in the series and should be avoided by all but completists. The dark aspects of Washington Irving's book have been toned down in service of a bland script and oddly tacked-on environmental message. There are glimpses of the sort of magic and wonder the story invokes, but mostly this is a lifeless and static adaptation. Francis Ford Coppola is the most acclaimed director to work on the show, but he's directing on autopilot here. The script by Mark Curtiss and Rod Ash (who have notably written the most as well as the lamest scripts in the series) wanders aimlessly in the first half before crashing to a halt in the second. Harry Dean Stanton as Rip is one of the few good things here, but Talia Shire is woefully miscast (although I think that was the point) as Rip's overbearing wife. The series always runs on a shoestring, but here it really shows. During Hudson's flashback of the storm at sea, even young children will be rolling their eyes at the toy boat tossing around on a blanket. Some of the set pieces do deliver (most memorably the encounter with the ghosts) and Carmine Coppola's music is pretty enough, but I can find little else to recommend here. Maybe if you need help falling asleep.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Australia.
This is the story of two men William O'Hara Burke(Irish) and John William Wills (English) it follows them as they cross the continent of Australia.

These two men went down in Australian history as being the first two to cross the continent. There is also a tragic element to the story as the two men died on the way back to Melbourne. This film makes excellent use of Australia both its landscapes and actors. Jack Thompson puts in an excellent performance as Burke and English actor Nigel Havers is good as Wills. Greta Scacchi is also in the film and is very good.

With stunning cinematography excellent acting and attention to historical detail this film is surely one of the best Australia has ever produced. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definite kid-pleaser
My three-year-old daughter fell in love with this the first time we borrowed it from the library. I enjoyed it myself; my only gripe is Conchata Ferrell's performance. This usually very talented actress seems bored to tears and injects absolutely no feeling into her role as Thumbelina's mother. It's as if she was directed to perform as stoically as possible. I don't get it at all. I am also not impressed with Carrie Fisher's singing here. I know she is capable of singing quite beautifully, I just don't think the folkish songs in this tale are well suited to her instrument. It's hard to pull off such dirges unless the singer has that ethereal, almost mediaeval quality to her voice (think Loreena McKennitt, Mediaveal Baebes). But those minor complaints are of no consequence whatsoever to the intended audience. Children will certainly be enchanted! It's witty script and a fun production.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Thumb with a Big Heart
"Thumbelina" is a fantastic retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, "Little Thumb".

Produced in 1983 (and released the following year), as part of Shelley Duvall's charming live-action "Faerie Tale Theatre", the narrative is told with good humour, imagination, and a great sense of fun. The magnificent cast adds much colour and warmth to the proceedings. In particular, Carrie Fisher, in the title role, delivers a captivating performance. She makes an extremely attractive heroine, not to mention one who's "more than just another pretty face". She's an absolute delight, adding her unique qualities to the role. Not only is she pint-sized in real life (although not quite as tiny as a thumb!), she has a lovely, deep voice that is quite at odds with her diminutive stature. When she sings, it is a beautiful and rewarding experience. Indeed, she sings with "an angel's voice". (This is also a highlight for any Carrie Fisher fan, as she began her career as a singer, and yet she only sings briefly in "Hannah and Her Sisters", 1986, and in the Walt Disney live-action comedy, "Sunday Drive", also released in 1986.)

Carrie Fisher is supported by equally delightful character actors. The late Burgess Meredith is in top form as Mr Mole, the second would-be husband of Thumbelina. Likewise, William Katt makes a very positive impression as the Prince of the Flower Angels.

This wonderful fairy tale is further enhanced by excellent production values, including great music, atmospheric sets, and good costumes and creatures like Mother Toad, her hapless son, Herman, the Fieldmouse, and the Swallow.

The script faithfully follows the original story, although the gender of the Fieldmouse has been changed, making for a more convincing friendship with Mr Mole to exist, as well as creating a heartfelt guardianship of Thumbelina along strictly platonic lines.

This well-written and perceptive tale ("I'm always the bride, but never the bridesmaid") makes for enchanting family entertainment. "Thumbelina" delivers a great message, too, but above all, it's storytelling at it's most memorable.

I applaud executive producer Shelley Duvall, and all involved, for giving such a wonderful gift. It's up there with Jim Henson's equally engaging "Storyteller" anthology series, produced in the late 1980s, and the "The Doll", an Emmy Award winning episode of "Amazing Stories" (of the same era).

For me, it's an extra special treat because Carrie Fisher became much more than just Princess Leia with this performance. Besides, she continues to melt me every time she smiles as the Ultimate Flower Angel! Let's hope that this "Faerie Tale Theatre" production, along with my other favourites like "Beauty and the Beast", are re-released soon. Preservation on DVD for future generations is highly recommended. ... Read more
