4-0 out of 5 stars your dreams will never be the same
Director Roger Christian's film is more supernatural than horror, with Zeljko Ivanek as an amnesiac attempted suicide who is brought to a Georgian state mental asylm and assigned Kathyn Harrold as his doctor. That Harrold's name is Farmer and resists the standard procedure of giving shock treatment to suicidal patients so as to destroy memory, may be writer Thomas Baum's tribute to Frances Farmer. Baum's screenplay features witticisms. A nurse calls Ivanek "fish" referring to his drowning attempt, Harrold tells Ivanel him thinking he is the messiah will be a problem because they already have one in the "elopement ward", and when Ivanek meets him the messiah spits on the ground in front of Ivanek and says "Walk on that". Soon however Harrold begins having visions of Ivanek, which allows for the contextually funny remark "He's driving you crazy", and we learn that he is a "sender" ie one who communcates via telepathy, using the skill it is said infants under 7 months have to mentally communicate with their mother. Ivanek experiences his telepathy as nightmares and these are seen as reality by whoever he sends to. At first it is only Harrold but soon others at the asylum get it too. The nadir of this is when Ivanek is given shock treatment where the attending professionals are shocked as well, and when Harrold rings to report that Ivanek is having a "nightmare", the answering nurse scores a laugh with "Tell me about it" and we see the staff trying to cope with anguished patients. Christian's skill with pace and atmosphere redeems the excesses of the nightmare visions - rats, blood, broken glass, cockroaches, fire - though occasionally the division between what is real and what is only imagined is unclear, and sometimes the music score by Trevor Jones is too much. However it's great to see Harrold in a rare leading role, I liked the staging of Ivanek's opening suicide attempt, the way a policeman places a necklace in her hand after her claim that it was taken from her is proven to be false, Shirley Knight as Ivanek's mother makes several enigmatic appearances, and Christian supplies a suitably spooky and unresolved ending. ... Ok, I realize there could be a lot to rag on for this movie, but in the end, the acting is good, the plot line is interesting and continuous, and the ending is awesome. Vincent Kartheiser plays a kind of person which no longer exists, though it was only the early 90's...a skater/hacker. Come on, that's cool in itself.

And really...who could miss Patrick Stewart doing a little dance?
Ok, I have to go, but I love this movie. See it, I don't know why it was so unpopular. Ollie is awesome too.

Rock on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Michel de Nostradame, "ladies man"..........
Gee, it seems all reviews up to this date I write have COMPLETELY MISSED the "obvious", and that being~

Tcheky Karyo's "Michel" is not only a "hipster-saint" mystic of those dreadful Dark Ages( but are not we are currently in a NEW DARK AGES ,"imo"...), but the ladies just can not seem to get their hands OFF our bearded stalwart "Nosti", no he is ONE HOT ITEM !
(And WHAT a cast of ladies, Julie Armond, Assumpta Serna, Maja Morgenstern, gee , even Amanda Plummer as "the Queenie" is as interesting as the other 3 mentioned are lovely). They all "dig" our boy , they were the original "groupies".

My mind was continually distracted from a quite enjoyable "historical fiction" account of the life of this legendary and enigmatic "prognosticator"~~he was NOT a "procrastinator" when it came to a bit of "back to the castle bedroom for some bouncy-bouncy". Would this "Movie Nosti" turn down a trip to the sack??(is there an alligator that would refuse the corpse???) Grrrr,"have at it", Michel !!

Our beloved (and overly medicated)"Don Juan" de Nostradame even had second thoughts when he gets a proposal from one of his aging female patients *whilst*(isnt that how they said that word then, hehe!)his hand was checking in vicinity of her mammalian apparatus for swollen lymph nodes from PLAGUE!

Excellent performances by all, great "period-piece " costumes, "medieval" soundtrack and empassioned performances, even if a bit OVER THE TOP.

A thouroughly delightful movie not meant to reveal any "truths", but should spur interest to discover the "historical" Nostradamus and just sit back and enjoy this emminently watchable film....

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows a very human man with great prophetic powers
This is one of the best movies I have seen on him. It was highly enjoyable and I recommend it to anyone wanting to add to their Nostradamus collection. This is one not to pass up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth watching, slightly sensational.
Not a bad movie , especially for those who find the history channel too dry. It weaves the base truth of his life and loves into a palatable mix of history and dramatization.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nostradamus: Honest Attempt at Interest Falls Flat
The prophecies of the 16th century seer Nostradamus have tantalized his supporters for centuries. Those who believe in him tout his accurate predictions. Those who doubt him point to the vagueness of those predictions that can be interpreted in more than one way. Director Roger Christian is unclear whether he wanted to present a documentary of the life of Nostradamus or a traditional film with plot, theme, and characterization. What the viewer gets in NOSTRADAMUS is some unsatisfactory hybrid that bounces from scene to scene with little to tie them together. Tcheky Karyo plays the lead as one who is only too well aware of the mystical nature of a prophet who sees visions of far flung events. Every five minutes or so, Nostradamus looks into a small pot of water that mysteriously bubbles and forms visions that look suspiciously like film clips of nuclear blasts, the Kennedy assassination, Nazis marching, and a wickedly smiling Saddam Hussein. Now I have no problem with the film's premise that one man could have preternatural powers of divination, but if I see a vision that I know is historical fact, then I expect the director to do more with that vision than merely use it to drum up charges by the Holy Inquisition about heresy. Unfortunately, with each passing vision, there is no accompanying reverberation and the film stops dead in its tracks. After three or four visions, I wanted to grab Nostradamus and shout: 'Do something with this vision!' F. Murray Abraham at least adds some emotional pop with his warnings to Nostradamus not to publicize his visions. The other supporting characters have little to do but react predictably to these visions. By the end, all I could take away was the limited knowledge that some guy in history saw weird things but did not use this weirdness in any meaningful way. A movie is supposed to do more than that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Egregious
Who produced this movie, a Wiccan? The ugliest anti-Christian (particularly anti-Catholic) diatribe ever brought to the screen, "Nostradamus" succeeds in being equally offensive in every other aspect, as well. The physician Nostradamus is portrayed as a trendy earth-friendly herbalist; the mystic Nostradamus is depicted as a Timothy Leary of yesterday, whose visions are "enhanced" by the taking of the 16th century's equivalent of LSD. The completely gratuitous sex scenes are to laugh, as they are always accompanied by a golden glow and Gregorian chants, or some unreasonable facsimile thereof. And the pretentious, obscure ending -- one either sits there jaw agape or one bursts into loud guffaws.

Oh, avoid at all costs. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary kicks ass
I saw this movie at my friend Joel's house, and the first time I saw it I didn't get it but I got it the 2nd time. I was half asleep the first time, anywho, It's just about Leary and he kills all these guys who tried to kill his dad and he's especially looking around for a man named Richard Essex( Joe Mantegna), now Mantegna is Frank and Leary is Johnny Crown or Johnny Alt, the 2 have a bunch of nicknames. Larry Bishop is Ned Lynch( Bishop also wrote the screenplay) and later he kills LEary's father and then there's all this mobsterinbetween stuff. Leary takes Mantegna to see Anabella Sciorra for therapy, becuase the two had been in love and by this movie they still are( Mantegna is a lady's man, let's say that). Leary has an insider who kills off his "hit list" and Mantegna and Leary go around doing Leary's " things to do list". Leary knows Mantegna's Essex but he doesnt want to tell him. They go to The Underworld where Leary, Mantegna are up against Bishop and Jimmie F. Skaggs( Leary's insider, but who turns on him). This movie is very violent and very bloody. I don't know how manguys get killed in the beginning but Leary just plows um over like sushi. lot's of twists and turns and the story keeps itself up there. Abe Vigoda( who plays Mantegna's father) is never cooler.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extreme silliness, but worth a rental
I originally saw the tail end of this film on cable television, many years after it was released, but upon re-viewing, found it to be a great exercise in satire--namely, the mob movie scene. It borrows large doses of Tarantino, but remains strictly a Denis Leary feature.

Whether or not that's a bonus is up to you, but he's on the money in this film. There are a few exchanges that had me gut laughing in their inanity, and even if the film's a bit too long, I still think it belongs in the guilty pleasure box.

4-0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary, Actor, Who Knew?!
This is a good crime thriller with an engaging central character and some decent action sequences. One question (you guessed it!)why isn't this on DVD?!

4-0 out of 5 stars For the price, how can you go wrong
I think this movie is pretty damn good for what it is. Its a pulp crime story about a guy who gets out of jail and starts talking care of old business. Things aren't ever that easy, and with a sub plot in tow, violence breaks out around every turn. If you liked Leary in suicide kings then you should like this. I'm waiting for the DVD, but for the low price how can you go wrong.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tick, Tick, Booooom!
Technically this is a great movie. Two massive explosions are brilliantly filmed and the suspense that goes with them sets the standard for the rest of the film. Unfortunately the film doesn't really keep you hooked as much as it could do, and the dialogue contains way to much dumb swearing. A bit more thought into the script and the characters would have made this a top film. As it is, it's not bad and is worth seeing for the photography alone. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How could they do that?
How can they make movie from a book without, obviously, ever reading it? Even recieved as a gift, you paid too much for this video.

Other then a few people and place names, the movie was all wrong. Even if you over look the problems of bringing a realistic 12' tall alien to life without CGI this was a turkey.

3-0 out of 5 stars I didn't think it was that bad....
Some of the writers here are more critical of Scientology and are making up facts; the truth is that the book Battlefield Earth is quite entertaining. The movie was not the greatest mainly due to its not sticking with the novel. Read the Mission Earth series instead. Wouldn't a cartoon series of Battlefield Earth communicate better?

My Dog could make a better movie!
I don't know what this movie is about, I stopped watching it with 15 minutes! Two hours of my life are too important to spend whith this garbage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great.....just ignore the bad reviews
Everyone who gave this movie a less than stellar review hasn't a CLUE what they're talking about. This movie is great fun. If you're a sci-fi/fantasy fan, you can't go wrong with Battlefield Earth. Great soundtrack, awesome special effects, amusing characters, and a more than decent storyline all amount to Roger Ebert being a moron. :)

A must-see.

4-0 out of 5 stars New classic!
This abomination is what Ed Wood would have created if someone gave him 70 million dollars and a lot of booze.

At first my tortured mind recoiled in horror and I could actually see myself watching a clumsy looking John Travolta stomp around in platform boots terrorizing petty humans. Battlefield Earth is SO bad had to watch it four times in a row just to get my confused brain to accept what it was being forced to watch. After the shock wore off, Battlefield Earth gust got funnier and funnier. Like, how did the ape-like humans learn to fly complex jump jets in one short lesson? Why would such an advanced civilization need gold so badly? Why did the aliens have beaded dreadlocks? If the aliens were so smart, why didn't they find Fort Knox on their own? Was Travolta's character supposed to be the new Darth Vader? Did at least one studio executive loose their job for giving this a green light?

I don't know if it was intentional, but there is actually an Ed Wood line in the film. An amused alien played by Travolta calls the inhabitants of earth "stupid humans". Too funny. ... Read more
