4-0 out of 5 stars Is your best friend like her?
This is a well-written, simple but disturbing film about friendship. The movie offers nothing new on the basis of the plot of most "tv-movies" of the week but acting wise, this is an excellent piece. Jaclyn Smith, is as always, beautiful and refined as the "best friend." One of the appeal of the film and sustains your interest in watching it, is seeing angelic Smith playing the villain. She's so sweet, so beautiful, but so bad..she's really bad! But she's actually good in playing bad. If there's any actress who should play the role of Gene Tierney in a re-make of the classic "Leave Her To Heaven," Smith would be wonderful. For Jaclyn Smith fanatics, there's a nice first shots of her old Vogue cover shoots and some old photos. Go and rent it! You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it espically Jaclyn Smith

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Coming of Age Film
Based upon a short story by Joyce Carol Oates (Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?), Smooth Talk stars a lovely Laura Dern in her first 'big' role. Dern plays a young woman, Connie, who is at the difficult time in her life when she is making the transition between girl and woman. She meets a attractive yet slightly scary older man played by Treat Williams.

I suppose the plot could have been handled in a lurid, trite manner, but the direction by Joyce Chopra, as well as the fine acting by Ms. Dern and Williams, make this film rise above what could have been a fairly pedestrian effort in lesser hands.

We've all been in Connie's world, the world that suddenly presents itself when the tie to one's parents begins to loosen. We watch, and cringe, at some of the choices Connie and her friends face, waiting and hoping that all turns out well when she makes some poor decisions. Williams plays Arnold Friend ("A Friend") to unctuous perfection. In the story, he's 30 but tries to acts 18; Williams fits right in.

I'm not going to give away the ending, but let's just say that Connie's parents have real reason to be concerned about their daughter and the choices she makes. The film does end differently than the short story.

James Taylor was the film's music director, and some of his classic music is prominently displayed here.

BTW, this film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1986. It's a shame that a excellent film such as this just seems to slip through the cracks. A DVD is really in order.

Highly Recommended. ... Read more

Gene Wilder cowrote and stars as Cash Carter, a former Broadway theatrical director since retired from the Great White Way and now running a community theater in picturesque Stamford, Connecticut, in this engaging period mystery. The year is 1938, and the sleepy little burg is woken by the murder of the abrasive, racist, almost universally disliked millionaire Sidney Lassiter (Millennium's Terry O'Quinn). Lt. Tony Rossini (amiable Mike Starr, best known for his portrayals of thick mob goons) turns to Cash for his insight into human nature and psychology, but this brief consultation soon turns into full-fledged detective work as the killings continue and the suspects keep stacking up. Wilder and director Joyce Chopra don't take the TV mystery into any new territory, but the meandering drama combines nostalgic charm with playful bits of theatrical fun revolving around Cash's play in progress and his penchant for play acting. It's Wilder's best role in ages, a small-town Sherlock Holmes with the confidence of a urban sophisticate, the warmth of a loving father, and the maturity of a man who has gone through his own emotional hell and come out alive. If the film ends up short on suspense, it more than makes up for it in rich, winning characters and Chopra's light, unassuming direction more reminiscent of British mysteries than American shows. --Sean Axmaker ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Mystery
The perfect movie for a rainy afternoon-- A beautifully photographed period mystery: great use of light, perfect costumes, props, sets, locations and perfectly cast. Gene Wilder is deft and intelligent as Carter, a highly successful Broadway director, who has left New York with his daughter after he and his wife were attacked, and his wife murdered. "Cash" now directs a small theatre company in Stamford, Connecticut (charming, as it used to be!). Luckily for us, he's pals with the local police lieutenant (well-played by Mike Starr), who taps Wilder to be his sounding board as he unravels murder(s)[see "Lady in Question"]. Very nice characterizations, nice bit of romance, nice period situations--- Just a great way to spend a couple of hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Murder Mystery
Murder in a Small Town, starring Gene Wilder, is about a murder of someone Gene Wilder knows. The suspects are also people he knows and he is forced to accuse one of them. His friend who is a cop helps him unravel amost all the secrets except one small detail. Who did it? Will he find out who did it, or will someones life be at stake? Watch this exciting, thrilling, and suspenseful movie and find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery That Everyone Would Enjoy!!!
When I first saw this film on A&E, I fell in love with it. Gene Wilder and the rest of the cast gave a splendid performance. This movie was not all about the mystery case. It had some few side stories as well. A little bit of romance, a little bit of this and that. That is why I gave this movie five stars because the movie was not all about a Murder-Case. Although, the main story was good enough and I give this movie credit for that. This movie was not at all suspenseful or scary, but very unexpected and enjoyable. Two thumbs up! - Jennie Sablan

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Slow, But Entertaining
_Murder in a Small Town_ is a film that mystery lovers and Gene Wilder fans will all enjoy. The plot starts out slow but gains momentum as it draws in its audience. Wilder is a treat in this film and makes up for any small inadequacies or predictabilities in plot. Overall, this show is good, clean, murderous fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Movie
Yes, this is classified as a 'chick flick.' But it is wonderful! Diane Keaton, Carol Kane, and Kathryn Grody do a wonderful job as the 'Lemon Sisters', three best friends who may fight every now and then, but are always there for one another. This movie combines comedy and drama together, thus making it wonderful. Hearing Diane Keaton sing was another high point of the movie! If you have two best friends, watch this movie. It is simply wonderful. Even if you don't, watch the movie anyway. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endearing and Touching Movie
One of the main reasons that I bought "The Lemon Sisters" was because Diane Keaton was one of the stars. She happens to be my favorite actress, so I decided to get the movie. I'm very glad I did! It is so sweet and touching. Diane Keaton, Carol Kane, and Kathryn Grody all give wonderful performances as three women who have been friends since they were little. One thing I really loved about this movie were the flashbacks and how they were in black and white, so it was easy to tell when they would be going into a flashback.

The movie also has quite a few comedic points, like when Franki (Kane) attempts to start a singing career away from Eloise (Keaton) and Nola (Grody). But the three just aren't the same when they are apart. I thought that the way they came up with the name of their group was very interesting and cute. And no matter what happened, they remained friends, through thick and thin. Why this movie was not as acclaimed as it should have been, I do not know. But what I do know is that it is wonderful and a movie for friends to watch together.

A tangy, funny story set against the dreamscape of Atlantic City, THE LEMON SISTERS follows the fortunes and mishaps of three best friends, trying to make it big.

The problems and heartache always fall away each Monday night, as they gather at their favourite club, and sing as "The Lemon Sisters". Among the many delights to be savoured here is Carol Kane's hilarious rendition of "Rawhide", and the quirky supporting cast which includes Elliott Gould, Estelle Parsons, Ruben Blades and Aidan Quinn.

A really delightful, feel-good film with a goofy charm that is too hard to resist.

3-0 out of 5 stars MFTV Highs and Lows
A typical MFTV movie with a few interesting strenths, but tends to sag and go flat here and there, especially as it skips back and forth between the story and the trial. I bought the film mainly because it has a heavy metal theme. I'm a metal fan and longhair guy and I liked this aspect of the film, and I like seeing Helen Hunt as a headbanger chick. Some of you metalheads might enjoy a few of the cool '80's hair metal parts which are sprinkled throughout the film. The one thing that irritates me about this film besides it being dull here and there is that it indirectly portrays the typical, tired stereotype of the long haired metalheads as "bad" and "evil", something hollywood wrongly and unfairly always seemed to do with us. If heavy metal isn't your thing you probably won't like this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extra special Marilyn documentary
Marilyn Monroe: The Woman Behind the Myth offers a truly special look at the life of a woman who will always be loved as long as there are motion pictures to show and viewers to watch them. This particular documentary stands out from the crowd in a number of ways. For one thing, it was made just months after Marilyn's untimely death. While much of the footage shown in this 52-minute black and white video is not of the finest quality, the content of that footage is nothing short of amazing. Among those interviewed on camera are Marilyn's first foster parents, former teachers, friends, and fellow actors. One sees Marilyn's mother walking the grounds of the sanatorium where she then resided, childhood photos of a young Norma Jeane, glamour shots from Marilyn's early modeling career, clips from early films and an unforgettable television commercial Marilyn made before she became a star. There are interviews with her first husband Jim Dougherty, acting mentor Lee Strasberg of The Actors Studio, psychiatrist and friend Milton Greene, as well as many others. The narration is provided by the legendary John Huston, the man who directed Marilyn in her first major film (The Asphalt Jungle) as well as her last (The Misfits). Finally, sound bytes from Marilyn herself make this a truly intimate look at the woman behind the legend.

While the video covers a number of the personal tragedies that haunted Marilyn throughout her life, it is clearly a very sympathetic and understanding treatment of this beloved yet still misunderstood star. It does a particularly impressive job of communicating the emotionally difficult nature of Marilyn's unsettled childhood. A lot of people love Marilyn Monroe but never come to know Norma Jeane. Some don't even see the Norma Jeane soul that fueled the persona of Marilyn Monroe; Marilyn herself never truly came to know the wonderful person who lived inside her. Jim Dougherty, who married 16-year-old Norma Jeane when he was 21, makes the statement that he never knew Marilyn; he only knew Norma Jeane. That statement is the most memorable moment of this entire presentation for me. Marilyn Monroe: The Woman Behind the Myth provides touching glimpses of Norma Jeane while offering an impressive overview of Marilyn's career. What more could a Marilyn fan ask for? ... Read more
