4-0 out of 5 stars Funny as hell in bits and pieces
This is a great movie if you're just in the mood to laugh and don't feel like watching a movie with a deep plot. Much better than "Up In Smoke" in my opinion. The movie is filled with lots of funny skits but, there is one BIG reason to either rent it or buy it: The welfare office segment. The old drunk man laughing at the nodding junkie has to be one of the funniest scenes ever filmed. I watched this movie with a friend and we watched that scene over and over again. It didn't even seem like it was scripted. While the old man is cracking up at the junkie, Michael Winslow (from Police Academy), is doing submarine and baby crying sound effects. While this is going on, Chong is just looking around and laughing at what's going on around him. It's about 5 minutes of insanity that is the highlight of the film and the one I remembered most from when I first saw it in 1980. When this movie came out, many people complained about it's pro-drug attitude but, any character who's doing drugs is just a burn-out and a loser. Cheech and Chong once said in an interview that they were like a walking billboard sign against drugs because their characters were such a mess. I went to high school in the 70s and I hung out with people like this. Maybe that's another reason why I think this movie is so funny. Who knows?

5-0 out of 5 stars best cheech and chong movie
Finally on DVD!!! I love universal for bringing this one on DVD finally. this is the best cheech and chong movie in my opinion. Better than up in smoke, even though up in smoke is great. This movie is excellent and i highly recommend it to cheech and chong lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ain't That A PEACH?
The scene with Cheech & Chong riding in their van with Chong's (...) specimen (actually, he got his sister to fill the jar) and a bag of white powder is the funniest thing I've ever seen in a movie. It alone is worth the price of the DVD. But there's more!

The guitar shop, the bath house, Chicken Charlie, "Ain't that a peach", "I think they're Iranians!", and "I'm gonna turn this glass into a ..." are funny enough to leave anyone in stitches.

I'm not a pothead, but I love this movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie..."but"....
Great movie...but...would be a better DVD if it had both versions. The version (not included) in questions is the heavy censor TV version. Instead of "weed" they are carrying "diamonds". That version has a better soundtrack as well. Also, cartoons, and more UFO scenes. Usually censorship makes for a bad movie, but in this case it makes for a totally stupid, great, awesome movie. It just proves how far censors would go in the 1980's. Universal should release a disc with both "classic" versions. Oh, and Edie McClurg is great in this one! Welcome cone to "The Next Movie" yall cmon in...rockin soundtrack!

Cheech & Chong's first cannabis comedy is also their best, a souvenir from the more carefree days before "Just Say No," when people did not feel so defensive about inhaling. In 1978, the prevailing spirit was more like "Just Say Blow." Even New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael liked it (the movie, that is), adding that it was "an exploitation slapstick comedy, rather than a family picture, such as Blazing Saddles or High Anxiety--which means that it's dirtier, wilder, and sillier." The story has to do with bumbling potheads Cheech & Chong searching for primo bud, while being tailed by a team of inept law-enforcement officers, led by Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach). Sample dialogue: When a cop pulls them over to ask if they are any illegal substances in his vehicle, Cheech replies: "Not any more, man." Up in Smoke is an irresistibly silly and charming movie that--despite, or perhaps because of, the national furor over drug use--plays today like a relic from a bygone era, a sweeter, more open, more innocent period in our history. --Jim Emerson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A tokin' cult classic
For those of you who grew up in the 70's, Cheech & Chong where the Laurel & Hardy or Abbott & Costello of those times. Seeing this film in DVD is a joy, since I must have seen it on tape more than a 100 times, till it was unwatchable. Now, for the first time we can see the film in it's original panoramic (widescreen) format, and for those who saw it before on tape, you'll see all you've missed before. The copy is pristine clear, and it includes a load of deleted scenes, some actually funnier than what we saw on the original run of the film. Included on those missing scenes, is the infamous one featuring Harry Dean Stanton, who doesn't remember ever appearing in a Cheech & Chong film. Plus there is an audio commentary by Cheech himself and Lou Adler, the director, who prior to this, had never directed a film before. You'll be astonished to learn how much this film influenced other people, guys like Quentin Tarantino, for example, not to mention the numerous rock groups who grew up watching this guys and re-recorded their music. All in all, a real pleasure to discover this seminal gem from the 70's, given it's full use or advantage on DVD. If you saw this guys' films way back then, do yourself a favor, and get hold of this DVD. For those too young to remember them, but who heard of them from an older brother or "stoner" uncle, get hold of it and discover what kept us laughing during those daze, er, uh, days. Filmakers of today, take notice that films can be made without a million cuts per second and only with long continous shots.

2-0 out of 5 stars Plot-Free Pot-Fest -- Big Whoop about Very Little!
Definitely DATED, this film has 70s "High Times" written all over it. These guys have not much more than "pot" on their brain. All jokes lead to the same subject...dope, man!

Cheech and Chong, already celebrated novelty song artists with several best-selling albums to their credit just had to take their "message" to the next level. "Up In Smoke" gave them plenty of exposure and secured a solid fandom. 25 years later, though, the laughs drop drastically on the dime-bag-scale.

When I was still in high school (and I didn't give in to the smoking of anything, then or now), I may have enjoyed this sort of nonsense more. As a middle aged intellectual, I can offer only a few tired smirks. Give me Laurel & Hardy instead!**

5-0 out of 5 stars best stoner movie ever!
hello cheech and chong fans i may only be a teenager but i have been a fan for like 4 years now and this is the funniest movie i have ever seen might be the best comedy ever!.and if ypur going to order a cheech and chong movie get this one but if i were you and you had some money to spend buy all of them and all of there cd's.and im so glad chong is finaly out of prison and to all of you die hard c and c fans the new cheech and chong movie is going to start production in september chong and cheech were both on jay leno on july 9th so there back together for awhile. anyways dont get to high later.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A PARODY, DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT?
This film does not advocate drug use, this film, and Cheech and Chong's act are parodies of people who do drugs. If anything it takes every stereo type of all kinds of drug users and makes fun of them. If you watch this movie again and think about what I have said you will actually think this film is even funnier than you did before. I have known most of these types of people and think this movie is halarious, one of the funniest films ever made and I do not do drugs.

2-0 out of 5 stars ALL Pot and NO Plot makes this ONE DULL MOVIE!
Campy trip back to the smoky 70s. Definitely DATED, this film has "High Times" written all over it. These guys have not much more than "pot" on their brain. All jokes lead to the same subject...dope, man!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Funniest Movies Ever
(...)This film is not as cohesive between scene to scene as their other films, but there are much more laughs yielded per scene without expectations. Some of the brilliant scenes that reviewers have neglected to mention: the wrestling scene where Cheech and Chong fight an imaginary wrestler shows their brilliant ability for physical comedy, Tommy Chong's great impersonation of an old blues man (couldn't understand what he was saying for awhile), their impersonation of two gay performers bickering before their show, and many more. Throughout all the scenes, they travel through many facets of comedy and even drama. (...)I highly recommend this film to open-minded comedy fans not looking for a traditional narrative comedy.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's so stupid...
...but not funny. I don't even know how Cheech and Chong fans could like this movie, because this movie is really different from "Up in Smoke" or their other movies. In "Up in Smoke" there was at least some direction to the movie, but in this movie most of it is composed of lame comedy gimmicks that were entirely not funny unless you are high off your ass or have an I.Q. less than 20. They don't even smoke in this movie! The closest thing they do to drugs is eat some marijuana leaves... how stupid do they think we are? Stay away from this one!

1-0 out of 5 stars Smoke-Less Ashtray Provides More Laughs
Cheech & Chong are scraping the bottom of the barrel in this brain-dead dragged-in-by-the-hair story of unknown "Hollywood Stars" crashing an Amsterdam Film Festival, repeatedly being mistaken for "Mr. Burt Reynolds and Miss Dolly Parton". This is non-stop unamusing non-sense. The side-plot of E.T. (which was at the time the #1 film in the world), the "extra testical" couldn't have been less funny.

Fans of the classic comedy duo know the REAL reson these two would want to spend time in Amsterdam of all places on the globe (duh!). To have sexy blonde Hotel maids (and bell hops) go goo-goo-gaa-gaa over these two aging dope glorifiers is not credible at all.

The bite and spontaneous humor we remember from their original cult classic "Up In Smoke" is completely missing from this stupid follow-up. The 70s comedy albums are still "the s*it" today, with laughs every 10 seconds. "Still Smokin'" is about as dumb as a film gets. Why not revive the Three Stooges to save the day? Put out your butt and forget this DOA stinker!*

3-0 out of 5 stars Still Smokin After 20 years.
This was a good performance by Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. This takes place in Amsterdam,Holland. Cheech and Chong try to make money dealing hash legally in Holland but the job turns backwards on them. There are some suggestive scenes like when they police fly over a beach and see some dutch women who take their bikinis off. Good movie of you are over at least 16.

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible!
Still Smokin' is too bad for the first half, then it goes [down the drain].It becomes unfunny and uninteresting. The stand up is horrible. If you want Cheech and Chong doing their comedy routine buy one of their CD's instead of this film.If you're looking for a good Cheech and Chong movie check out "Up in Smoke" or "Nice Dreams". ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cheech & Chong are selling Ice Cream with "Herbs".
The flaw of this DVD is that the set-up screen where you choose Play Movie, Audio, Screen Ratio, etc, is blurry and the letters are red. The red bleeds in so you can not make out the letters or what the words are. The nice feature is the Aspect Ratio Selection where you get to choose full screen or widescreen, however it takes too long to flip back to set-up screen and there is no "play movie" to jump into. This Cheech & Chong film (the third as them in a starring role) is probably the most memorable of all films they have been in together. This time the guys have a new job driving a "Herbs" Ice Creams truck. This film is heavy on the marijuana. You'll even see a Gilla Monster er ah, a lizard that smokes a reefer. That Cheech, will he ever get a chance to make love? Memorable performance by Suzanne Kent as "Sidney, the Agent. No, it is NOT Lucie Arnaz. You're tokin' too much, watch the movie. Funniest Line In The Movie: "My Balls Itch" --Cheech Marin in a straight-jacket.
The next Cheech & Chong film is THINGS ARE TOUGH ALL OVER (1982). They also appeared in YELLOWBEARD (1983).

4-0 out of 5 stars Would you like a Hamburger?
Nice Dreams might be either C & C's second or third best film. They have a movie that might seem weird in the first viewing, but it grows on you after a few viewings, each one getting funnier. And it's not just the funny sequences involving a pot garden, a lizard sergeant or mental patient animals. It's also the little things, like chats by Cheech and Chong about petty stuff that actually might make sense when you go with the flow (like the discussion on Hippie retirement homes).

But that's just an observation on the small things. Overall, Nice Dreams is a very hilarious film that has all the things you could want in a C & C movie, and while it doesn't quite match up to the brilliance of Up in Smoke, it does many cool things; one of which is bringing Pee-Wee Herman in the mix as the uproarious Hamburger dude. Love the save the whales song.

4-0 out of 5 stars More like C&C
Nice Dreams comes in 2nd behind Up In Smoke, in my opinion. The innocent, goofy demeanor of Cheech and Chong are better portrayed in Nice Dreams than in Next Movie. One complaint I have, is they left Sgt. Stedanko out of the main plot. I think it added alot more humor to the story when he was an uptight, though incompetent, police Sargeant in hot pursuit of Cheech and Chong along with his numbskull officers. Though brain-dead things like Chong cashing a check for the Hamburger Dude with NON NEGOTIABLE stamped across the front made it worthwhile.

The red bleeds in so you can not make out the letters or what the words are. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not a classic like Up in Smoke
Overall, this movie wasn't as good as Up in Smoke or Next Movie (my favorite C&C movie) but it's a classic compared to Still Smokin and Corsician Brothers (perhaps C&C's worst).
The first half hour started off good but then it's a see-saw battle of good and boring parts. If you're a C&C fan, then I would recommend this movie for you, and if you're a beginner, start with Up in Smoke or Next Movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CHEECH CHONG
THE CORSICAN BRO'S I THINK IS WORTH SEEING ONCE IT;S ALL GOOD.

1-0 out of 5 stars DONT'T GET IT!
This is the worst of them all, not all that funny and no weed jokes, it's a waste of time and money, get the others and start laughing your ass off.

3-0 out of 5 stars Last Cheech & Chong film with them in a starring role.
Cheech & Chong play "Los Boys" and are told of a strange story, by Rae Dawn Chong (daughter of Thomas Chong), of The Corsican Brothers, played by of course, Cheech & Chong. Richard "Cheech" Marin and Thomas Chong also play some other roles too. Edie McClurg who was in CHEECH & CHONG'S NEXT MOVIE (1980) is also in this film. Did you see Peggy Cass? This is Cheech & Chong's last feature film with them in a starring role. This was followed by the video "Get Out Of My Room" (1985). They split after appearing in the film "After Hours". Tweleve years later, Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong were reunited in a professional way on-screen in 1997 on the CBS tv series "Nash Bridges" in the episode "Wild Card". This DVD offers Widescreen and Standard Screen. Excellent print of film, however some colors are florescent. Filmed in France. After this, Richard "Cheech" Marin and Thomas Chong appeared in: GET OUT OF MY ROOM (1985), AFTER HOURS (1985) and did voice-overs for FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAIN FOREST (1992).

5-0 out of 5 stars Downright hilarious! I LOVED THIS MOVIE!
There is no drug humor in this movie like in the other ones, but this movie is still hilarious. The humor is physical and stupid. You will laugh, you will cry, you will watch it over and overr again. The DVD of this movie is slim in features but its great. There is a trailer(s). The widescreen presentation is great (1.85:1 Aspect Ratio) and the full-screen version is good too. Check this movie out. This movie is more suitable for younger audiences than the other C&C movies. It is rated PG for language (there is some language) and some crude humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Far Out Man-Far Out!
Far Out Man is not a bad movie. I enjoyed it a lot (maybe because I was in it). If you are looking for an in depth plot, or even a "Cheech and Chong" THIS IS NOT THE MOVIE FOR YOU. But if you are just looking for a light laugh, hey man, this is a funny one. If you are a Chong fan (or are Tommy) like me, this movie has most of Chong's family in it. This movie's a "heavy hitter".

Hope this helped.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stupid...
Just another one of those low budget, stupid stoner movies. My buddy let me have it for a day, and I was pretty bored watching it. There were a few funny scenes, but for the most part a very crummy movie. Nothign Nothing like Cheech and Chong. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I agree.....
I agree with the previous reviewer that the previous reviewer before him needs to lighten up. First of all sherlock, there's so many people with the same last name because it's really chongs family. He sort of mixes his real life into a fictional plot. It's not meant to be anything scientific as you may have expected, just a fun movie about hippie culture(which you don't seem to know a lot about, or you'd get the movie more) But there is a lot of clever satire throughout the film, maybe if you paid attention, ya know? open your mind a bit, man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lighten up
I think the previous reviewer needs to light(en) up. This movie sets no haughty tone for itself, it's just fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars This movie is a real embarassment
I just saw this film on WGN. I think Tommy Chong should be totally ashamed of this movie. I enjoyed him in Cheech & Chong, particularly their first two movies, Up in Smoke, and Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, but I really thought they went totally off track with the Corsican Brothers, then after the release of "Born in East L.A." in 1985 (the song, not the movie that came out in 1987), they parted ways. As far as I'm concerned, Far Out Man, from 1990, is little more than a movie that's trying to be disgusting just to be disgusting. Tommy Chong plays this unbathed hippie that seems to have never heard of a shower or soap. He gets hypnotized by a therapist so he can go on the road as a roadie. He dates this blonde who wants her son to not like reading and Beethoven and live more wild (this is teenage rebellion in reverse, because it's usually the parents who want their kids to read and listen to Beethoven, not the other way around). Cheech Marin makes a brief appearence on this film, which is nice to see, but I'd be much happier if they got together on a permanent basis. Also what really ruins the movie is the really bad acting and incoherant plot. All the actors and acting are totally unbelievable. The hairstyle, in that 1980s style, is totally atrocious. But I dug up some info about this movie, and I didn't quite realize how many Chongs are on this film. There is Tommy Chong, of course. There is Rae Dawn Chong, Shelby Chong, and even Paris Chong. I never knew a movie that had so many actors with the same last names as this one. I know there are bad movies that are charmingly bad, like Hell Comes to Frogtown with Roddy Piper, but Far Out Man is just plain bad and gives hippies everywhere a real bad name. I guess I would rate this higher if the acting was better, and the people, particularly Tommy Chong was better groomed. I know the old Cheech & Chong flicks, like Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (1980) were disgusting at times, but nowhere as bad as Far Out, Man. If you want to see a hippie-oriented flick that came out around the same time as Far Out Man, try Flashback. ... Read more

If you want Cheech and Chong doing their comedy routine buy one of their CD's instead of this film.If you're looking for a good Cheech and Chong movie check out "Up in Smoke" or "Nice Dreams". ...

Cheech and Chong had already enjoyed celebrity as novelty song artists with several best-selling albums to their credit. This effort of "Smokin' Dope - The Movie" takes their "message" to the next level. "Up In Smoke" gave them plenty of exposure and secured a solid fandom. 25 years later, though, the laughs drop drastically on the dime-bag-scale.
